- 0:31Welcome to anime class. I'm your host Phoebe and with me
- 0:35is my Co host Chris. But more importantly with me is
- 0:37a very special guest. Please welcome to the arena.
- 0:42Ding Ding it's stop at tinny camp.
- 0:46The crowd goes wild in a kind of tray of aunties to 80s wrestling
- 0:53fashion. Before we dive into what we're
- 0:57doing this week, one thing that we do like to ask all of our
- 1:00guests is what was your like, gateway anime like?
- 1:04Is this like, tell us a bit about like your experience as
- 1:10whether you have or haven't watched a lot of anime, what's
- 1:13the vibe? I haven't really watched a lot
- 1:16of anime. I know about a lot of them, but
- 1:19I've not really sat down and get any of them.
- 1:22I love death, no. OK, no free.
- 1:26That's one of my favourites. I love Alice in Borderlands and
- 1:31I can't wait for Series 3, even though it's like, so are they
- 1:34going to do that? The first, the first one ever
- 1:41watched, I think I was about six of seven and it was Fest of the
- 1:45North Star. Oh my.
- 1:47Way OK yeah, this is something what we've taught that's that's
- 1:51such a good so you you say you haven't watched a lot of anime,
- 1:56but actually you're coming in with some like serious anime
- 1:58credentials if you've got a Fist of the North Star.
- 2:03I've I've seen the animated one, I've seen the live action one,
- 2:07I've read the comic that made all of it, I've seen the other
- 2:09animated one. It wasn't as good as the first
- 2:11one, so I might have seen that actually.
- 2:13Yeah, yeah, that's good. And and if you've got fighting,
- 2:18fighting anime credentials, then actually this was a perfect
- 2:22series to for us to talk about, which is ultimate muscle like
- 2:28immediate, immediate nostalgia. How did you both find it?
- 2:37What was your like? I thought it was insane.
- 2:39I thought it was insane. It was like watching the WWE in
- 2:42the 80s. It's like seeing The Ultimate
- 2:44Warrior run to the run round the ring in the cap out everybody
- 2:48and then probably asked what it was like.
- 2:51Yeah, yeah. And we were saying before I
- 2:53loved, loved how they do all the like, the switches of like you
- 2:57have, like the hit you have. And they make so many puns.
- 3:00You have the heel, you have everyone switching sides, you
- 3:03have the backstage drama and and like the history of like so and
- 3:08so's father. Like it feels very, very of that
- 3:11world. How about you, Chris?
- 3:13What was your immediate, kind of like gut punch reaction to it?
- 3:17It was amazing. I remember covered all from
- 3:19school and catching the odd episode of this and it was just
- 3:23like, you know, it's one of them shows where you watch as a kid,
- 3:27you told me figured exists and then you just it brings it all
- 3:30back. It was one of them.
- 3:33Yeah. But this might be this might be
- 3:37the the most experience I've got with wrestling just based off
- 3:41this. So this is what I base wrestling
- 3:43on. This is the bar that wrestling
- 3:46has to make. Yeah, that and two.
- 3:50Is it Joe Henry? Yep, just check the fuse.
- 3:55Oh, it's spot under him. He should spot under him.
- 4:04Fab So if you were going to like describe this show to someone
- 4:07who'd never seen an anime at all or and then never seen
- 4:11wrestling, how would you, what's your like elevator pitch on it?
- 4:15How would you summarize it? Art jokes galore and cheesy as
- 4:25hell in animated form. What more do you need?
- 4:31So I'm in. It's hard but you seem this for
- 4:37someone who hasn't watched anime before because I would say this
- 4:40is like JoJo with best happiness.
- 4:48I I would argue this is JoJo, but with characters that you
- 4:52really like. Yeah.
- 4:54And that you want to see succeed.
- 4:56Made made this the the weird damn well that stuff as well.
- 5:01There's still a bit of mother stuff, there's still a bit of
- 5:08mother stuff, but it is less weird than this.
- 5:13I've been told that that isn't We have mother stuff in anime.
- 5:15It's not you. Yeah, are you even watching
- 5:19anime? Exactly.
- 5:22It's true. I think it also explains a lot
- 5:26about anime fans to be fair. Yeah, I've been to anime
- 5:33conventions. It does say a lot about.
- 5:39For sure. The yeah, I agree.
- 5:42I think it was crazy as hell. It's very, it's very funny.
- 5:46It's very goofy. Not like nothing is taken
- 5:48serious too seriously. And yet somehow they hook you
- 5:52into the drama of stuff, which again, I feel like he's very is
- 5:56basically wrestling because I had very, very little experience
- 5:59of wrestling. But I've recently been sort of
- 6:01being drawn in to like some of the bigger fights by a friend of
- 6:05mine. And the bit I love is the soap
- 6:07opera element to wrestling. And this has it in spades, like
- 6:11having those kind of like, yeah, the the flashbacks that each
- 6:17character has about like how they've learned their special
- 6:20moves or like the key bit that's like the underpinning, the fight
- 6:24you feel in in the world in that way.
- 6:27And I love that. Basically, like, in rough
- 6:30summary for those of our audience who haven't seen it,
- 6:33it's based on the main character is a guy called Kid Muscle does
- 6:38exactly what he says on the 10. He's just very muscly, and he
- 6:42behaves like a kid and he's wrestling with a mask.
- 6:46He's trying to wrestle to save the world from aliens.
- 6:49And there is that is about the extent of like, any sort of
- 6:52serious plot except for, you know, you've got all these other
- 6:56strange and wonderful characters that are in it.
- 7:01What do you think of, like, the characters and like the
- 7:03animation style? Because it's like very distinct
- 7:07and each character is weird. Yeah, yeah, it was it that
- 7:16looked like it was an animation from the 80s.
- 7:19It looked like it came out in the 80s and I suppose that's
- 7:23because it's based on something that staff these in the 80s.
- 7:27So let's just continue it the way it is because of that, as
- 7:31all of this is, it was very scratchily drawn.
- 7:35But it's like, this is great because not really much care of
- 7:41the animation because the let's just get the story out and the
- 7:46story's insane. So that let's just match that
- 7:49with the animation. Yeah, everybody is insane and
- 7:53there's dramatic bets that are there.
- 7:56You get pulled in by that. Like you said, it's like it's
- 7:59like a softball pride. You just get filled and you want
- 8:01to know what's happening next. Yeah, Yeah.
- 8:05And it's it needs to be watched, I think more for you to watch
- 8:08it. I think it, I think it does need
- 8:11to be revisited for sure. Chris, what about you?
- 8:13How'd you find the? Can you, can you remember those
- 8:16memes where to say spot the main anime character in the room?
- 8:20We are obviously I'm like a school room and there's one
- 8:23well, like massive purple spiky hair or something.
- 8:26Like every one of these characters.
- 8:28I mean, there's a dear man. Everyone's a stereotype as well.
- 8:32You get. What is it?
- 8:34Ramen man, who's just a Chinese, just a guy.
- 8:39Yeah, you get. Sumo guy you get there's Lords
- 8:46and it's there's a walrus. There's a guy, there's a walrus
- 8:49guy, there's a guy who's just like a giant shoe.
- 8:52That's his superpower is that he is shaped like is shape.
- 8:56Because I got like really drawn into this by accident.
- 8:58Like I was watching it, was going to watch 3 episodes, ended
- 9:02up hit like episode 19 without even blinking.
- 9:06It was just very easy to watch. Did you take it all in as well?
- 9:11Yeah, no, I was totally engaged the whole time.
- 9:17In fact, I think I was trying to do other stuff and then I kept
- 9:19just getting drawn back into how weird and wonderful it was.
- 9:23It's a giant shoe. Well looking for pickers for
- 9:25this. I did find a guy shaped like a
- 9:29urinal who flushed into the wrestler in mid fight.
- 9:34I think I'm a speedy special move.
- 9:37I loved it. The other the other characters
- 9:39that I really, really appreciated were the
- 9:41commentators because that made it feel very much like a proper
- 9:45wrestling show. For sure.
- 9:49Not just the vote. The voice acting for the
- 9:51commentators is amazing, really good.
- 9:53But they also have these like weird, like little, they have
- 9:56these weird banter moments as they're narrating what's
- 9:59happening. And it was just so delightfully
- 10:02weird. I lost it.
- 10:07Honey, watch watch ahead. No, because I wouldn't.
- 10:09Well I watched 4 episodes and or did you watch all them Kev or
- 10:16watch had more than three? I was gone.
- 10:18He just sat and watched the three so that I could say I'll
- 10:21definitely watch more or no, we'll watch more.
- 10:24I ended up watching about 7:00 or 8:00 because I was I need to
- 10:27know what arms watched the three.
- 10:30That's no, I need to see the fight.
- 10:31He's dad yeah can't believe that so I watched that and then it's
- 10:35like Oh no, no, they're going so I need to go and see Wes where
- 10:38he's going aside and that episode.
- 10:40I think I want one more. I've got stuff to do.
- 10:43And then I watched two more after that.
- 10:45But. But that is also The thing is
- 10:49that like some anime has a slow start and you need to give it 3
- 10:53episodes before you're into the story.
- 10:56With this, you come straight in, there's like no explanation to
- 10:59anything. You're just immediately in
- 11:00action with him as being like thrown to earth, to Earth.
- 11:06He wakes up on Earth immediately.
- 11:08There's fight camp and it's like, and I think that is also
- 11:13why it's so engaging because you just it, yeah, you don't mess
- 11:17around with like loads of law or anything.
- 11:19They're just like they're here, have some, have some great
- 11:21fights straight away. But, well, you know, it's
- 11:24ridiculous straight away because you see his house and there's a
- 11:27giant statue of him, legs of Kimball, with the door in
- 11:30between his legs. And you're like, this is how
- 11:32this is going to carry on. And he's going to.
- 11:36Well, yeah. Hercules Academy or something,
- 11:39it's called Yeah. Yeah, let's get down to
- 11:43business. Yeah, defeat the Huddens.
- 11:52Yeah, absolutely. But and the jokes are so good
- 11:56because they're they're so bad. Like every joke is a dad joke.
- 12:00Every every pun they can possibly like reach for, they
- 12:04reach for and. Overtly racist names of people.
- 12:10And yes, it's like, wow, like. Those are the those are the
- 12:15moments where I'm like, is this OK to watch?
- 12:17But it's kind of it. They kind of just gloss straight
- 12:20over it as well. So there's there is also part of
- 12:22me that's like, again, this feels very this feels very
- 12:26wrestling, especially wrestling in the 80s did have those like
- 12:30really young, like you're like, oh, I don't know if I don't know
- 12:33if that's the character that's going to fly nowadays.
- 12:36Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 12:39I mean, it does have some kind of, it was made in 2002.
- 12:43Like I remember one of the there's a guy in the background
- 12:46talking about, oh, if that was my son, I would beat them and do
- 12:49all this. And that's probably why I don't
- 12:51have custody of them anymore. Yeah.
- 12:54All right. The jokes are kind of knowing.
- 12:58I think they know that they're toeing a line.
- 13:01Yeah. Yeah, and I would say it's no
- 13:05better or worse. In fact, I would say it's no
- 13:07worse than a South Park at its like most uncomfortably racist.
- 13:13Yeah, yeah, like I would do you know what I mean?
- 13:15Like it's, yeah, it's, it's got a bite to it, but it's not like
- 13:21none of it's done in earnest. There's more hate behind that.
- 13:25It's just these are the stereotypes that people usually
- 13:28think of these cultures or just using them as an example so that
- 13:32everybody that watches this well know that these people are from,
- 13:36they are, even though they're not racist, but they say they're
- 13:38not racist, but they might be. Yeah, it might be a little bit
- 13:43and there is also and but there and this is kind of of the time
- 13:46as well that this anime was being made because if you look
- 13:48at like the Dragon Ball episodes around that time, it has some of
- 13:52the same kind of like, oh, I don't know.
- 13:55Yeah. I mean, isn't that?
- 13:58OK. But we'll just accept it because
- 14:00they're going to be a bit part and we'll brush right over them.
- 14:04There was a, there was an English guy on it.
- 14:06I couldn't tell from his accent, but one of his special moves was
- 14:10Big Big Ben Balm or something like that.
- 14:12And I was oh, he must be from England.
- 14:16My people, yeah. Yeah, I love it.
- 14:22If you guys would. Change for a Scottish guy?
- 14:24Yeah, yeah, Let's see how terrible the accent is, because
- 14:28everything that there's a Scott and they do, the ridiculous
- 14:31Highland accent that nobody. Actually.
- 14:35Thanks. Thank Simpsons for perpetrating
- 14:38a terrible Scottish accent. But we love it.
- 14:43Since have weirdly made like an unusual accent somehow, like
- 14:49define a nation. They've like gone real niche
- 14:52with it. Yeah, yeah.
- 14:57Oh, for sure. And if and if the Scottish guy,
- 15:00if the Scottish wrestler came in, it would be to bagpipes and
- 15:03haggis. Like, there would be no, there's
- 15:07no staffing city in this at all at any point.
- 15:11And sometimes that's really this is like pure escapism.
- 15:15I think it's nice to just like, I know this isn't going to ask
- 15:19me to think the series and that's probably why it's very
- 15:23watchable. Yeah, yeah.
- 15:26People that get upset by things like that, it's like, don't take
- 15:30yourself too seriously. They're not.
- 15:33They're absolutely not. At any minute now, they're going
- 15:35to fart and prove that they're not.
- 15:40Yeah, yeah. And I think he does like Because
- 15:42the American guy as well, but it texts or whatever he's called
- 15:46Terry the kid. Terry the Kid.
- 15:48Terry, the kid who's like, grown up on, like a cattle ranch and
- 15:52it's like pure, yeah, I just had the random cave branded on his
- 15:59forehead. I don't think they ever really
- 16:01like, are they out here branding each other like on this weird
- 16:05cattle ranch? No one ever explains it, but
- 16:07it's fine. Is another president, Yeah.
- 16:13Yeah. Normal, I mean, yeah, but at
- 16:16least saying about what's happening, a lot of the news
- 16:19probably best. So Brandon people with random
- 16:22keys. I mean, I love to do.
- 16:25That's what they want to do. I hadn't even put that together,
- 16:28but yeah, that is the thing. Oh, in the sink.
- 16:33Oh, I hope he's. I hope he's not a triplets.
- 16:37And I think there's also, I think this is one of the things
- 16:40about with the racial stereotypes is that everyone is
- 16:43like up for grabs in terms of race like that.
- 16:46It's just, it's just universally across the board, it's
- 16:49everyone's there. So there's no, it's not, it
- 16:52doesn't feel targeted in any way either.
- 16:54And I think that's another thing that shows there's no, like,
- 16:57genuine hate behind it, if that makes sense.
- 17:00Yeah. So, yeah, but I've, I've got
- 17:03the, I've actually got, as you can see, I've got the characters
- 17:06in front of us. And I've just seen Comrade
- 17:08Tubinski on the way. He's from.
- 17:19Yeah, yeah. So good.
- 17:23I'm so silly. If you were good.
- 17:24OK, so here's because this is the other question.
- 17:26And often when I'm watching anime, I'm like, if I was in
- 17:29this world, what would I do? So if you were going to be an
- 17:34ultimate muscle wrestler, what's your ultimate muscle wrestling
- 17:37persona? I mean, there's, there's so many
- 17:44aptitudes that it would have to have, I guess that it or I'll
- 17:50walk this either way it would have to have wanted to because
- 17:54it's the only things that people know about Scotland.
- 17:57I like the idea of the Loch Ness Monster.
- 17:59Maybe. And who eats haggis?
- 18:02The special attack is something to do with the haggis, The
- 18:05haggis hammer. Loch Ness Haggis.
- 18:10Loch Ness Haggis delicious and mysterious.
- 18:16Exactly. Yeah, yeah, I'm into it.
- 18:21And let's let's talk special attacks for the Loch Ness
- 18:24Haggis. What's your like fighting style?
- 18:27What what we being begin to in here?
- 18:30Well a haggis has one leg well also I just run by people I like
- 18:35it and then drop and then once once up desi and tired to drop
- 18:38back. Sorted.
- 18:40Yeah, well known. Haggis back.
- 18:44Yep, Yep. Into it.
- 18:47Chris, what about you? What's your?
- 18:48What's your? That's all.
- 18:51It's a stereotype and I'm from the Northeast, so there's what
- 18:55studies and coal mining. So I'll be the, I don't know,
- 18:59the miner Stoppie. That with Miner in the name, I
- 19:05feel like you're in the lightweight category of
- 19:08wrestling, yeah. It might might be.
- 19:11A little coal mining, A little coal mining child.
- 19:15Yeah, I love it. And let's talk.
- 19:21Let's talk special attacks. If you've got to have like, do
- 19:24you know, like pocket sand but with coal dust.
- 19:36Yeah, I love that. I think I would go for giant
- 19:38woman would be mine because I am as well.
- 19:42I'm a giant woman. You are a.
- 19:45Tool they would. I am a tool.
- 19:48Last week I was 7 foot tall. It just keeps getting bigger
- 19:51every week. That's what she said.
- 19:55That's never what she said, Chris, that stop lying, man.
- 19:58Stop lying on the Internet. Wow.
- 20:05Yeah, exactly. Yeah, So now giant woman, and I
- 20:12think I'm just going to be like Phoebe Smash.
- 20:15Like it's like there's no, there's no cleverness to it.
- 20:22Just smash. Smash like big giant woman.
- 20:26Do you ever use a washed ahead? Is there a woman wrestler in
- 20:29this? No, next and you're not going to
- 20:32find one the women in the women in the as as they were in the
- 20:3780s are here purely for like to drive the men to fight harder.
- 20:43Literally the purpose of the women in this either because
- 20:47they're like defending their honour or they want attention
- 20:50from women who that's the role of the woman in.
- 20:54In ultimate muscle, much like JoJo.
- 20:59Much like JoJo, except that no one's calling their mother a
- 21:02bitch for zero reason. True, true.
- 21:08Yeah, but no, it's, they're literally, I think there's one,
- 21:12there's one recurring female character who I think there'll
- 21:17be some sort of love interest vibe, but at the moment they're
- 21:21not even, they're like more like fans than they are actual
- 21:25gracious. So.
- 21:28And that's, do you know what? Normally that would annoy me,
- 21:30unless it doesn't even annoy me. It's too silly for me to get
- 21:35annoyed about it because I'm like, yeah, women.
- 21:37It would be silly for women to be involved in this.
- 21:43This is this. The boys could have ultimate
- 21:45muscle. Thanks.
- 21:49Yeah, yeah, you're welcome. Did you have like a favorite
- 21:52wrestler character? So far my favorite is meat
- 22:01because it just it's like 1/2 naked baby running around
- 22:08telling people what to do what? What do you need?
- 22:14This as we described this more and more, it feels like a fever
- 22:17to name so the best character is the half naked baby who sounds
- 22:22like a whiskey drinking smoker in his 50s.
- 22:26Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, I was a big fan of
- 22:30me too. He and he makes it.
- 22:31He feels like Phil from Hercules.
- 22:35He's got. Way offs.
- 22:40Even the voice, I didn't look up the voice actor, and I feel like
- 22:43I should have for the English dub because his voice is so
- 22:46familiar, but it's that kind of like Grady kind of New Yorkie,
- 22:50kind of. A.
- 22:53Kid Muzzle. I'm wrestling here.
- 22:57Yeah. Get back to work.
- 23:04Yeah, meets great. I know it doesn't ever explain
- 23:08like what meets meat vibe is like why is why is he enslaved
- 23:13as a kind of manager character to the muscle dynasty?
- 23:20I didn't. It doesn't explain why he's tiny
- 23:22as well, does it? He doesn't explain why he's
- 23:24tiny. I think he's that corn that went
- 23:27wrong. Oh.
- 23:29Oh. Yeah, because he was fighting in
- 23:32the chamber thing, wasn't he? Yes, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 23:38Maybe that's in the original series.
- 23:41Maybe they talk about meat. Meat's origin story.
- 23:45What is the origin of meat? Yeah, what about you, Chris?
- 23:53Oh right, so because I've only watched 1st 4 episodes picking
- 23:58this guy only because of his name, it's got to be Dick, Dick
- 24:03von Dick. Yeah, also sometimes known as
- 24:07Gazelle Man. Oh no he's not.
- 24:13Whatever, whatever version. There must be two versions, like
- 24:18a Fox Kids version and then the world.
- 24:20We watched for the English dub because I hadn't, because he was
- 24:25called that in In the vision we watched.
- 24:28Dick. Dick von Dick.
- 24:29Yeah, yeah. Yeah, because he collects
- 24:31people. But with Dick.
- 24:36Dick von Dick, yes, again, Sounds like he could be German.
- 24:41And yet he's a gazelle. Well.
- 24:48Dick Dick Dick's an actual shook in them gazelle type animal so.
- 24:56Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah. But von Dick, Dick, von Dick.
- 25:00So he's got a lineage. Don't wonder about that.
- 25:05Let him have a lineage fee, babe.
- 25:06Why are you? Yeah, why are you trying to pick
- 25:10a bar? Ultimate mouth.
- 25:14Yeah. But yeah, yeah, he's also like,
- 25:19he feels like a Piccolo character, you know, like the
- 25:21characters who were like, intense and very serious and
- 25:27there to do a job and a duty. Dick.
- 25:30Dick Von Dick has integrity, I feel, as a wrestler.
- 25:36Yeah, Yeah. Nice.
- 25:40I like the walrus guy. I like that he immediately goes
- 25:46out. Don't see she spend the rest of
- 25:49the whole of the first series just in hospital watching on the
- 25:5310th. Oh, does he?
- 25:55I didn't even know that. Oh sorry, sorry, spoilers.
- 26:01But he does it in a very exciting way, which I don't
- 26:03think I won't ruin. I don't think you can actually
- 26:07spoil this because even if you say Oh yeah, the kid Muscle wins
- 26:12the tournament or something, but she probably will, It's just
- 26:16like you're watching for how he wins it and what happens, so.
- 26:20Yeah, exactly. Yeah, yeah, possible.
- 26:23So this is, I don't think it's ever going to get more complex
- 26:26as good guys versus bad guys. Good guys will win, but
- 26:31ultimately I think the good guys are going to come together and
- 26:35win. That's and, yeah.
- 26:38What the bad guys called again is like an organization.
- 26:41It's 3 letters. CMP DMP Yes, Which sounds like a
- 26:47problematic, problematic football game style.
- 26:54Yeah. Bring on the DMP.
- 27:02Yeah, no, it's great. But I also love, I love the
- 27:05other thing that I really like about this series and they do it
- 27:08a lot with the DMPS. But the DMP have really cool
- 27:11merch and like merch sales become like a whole thing in the
- 27:17story. I saw like after this I was
- 27:22going to look for the DNP shirts.
- 27:26I would wear that. Yeah, well, so would a lot of
- 27:30other people. And that's.
- 27:32And so they gained a lot of popularity.
- 27:34And it's like, what was that? What was that wrestling group
- 27:37who kind of like, they were like almost like bad boys are
- 27:40wrestling. They wore a lot of black and
- 27:41leather in the 80s and they kind of demolition, demolition.
- 27:48That's who is the the DMV. Remind me of.
- 27:51Yeah, yeah, yeah. Remind me very much of
- 27:53Demolition because they have that kind of like high glamour
- 27:58villain villain energy. Yeah, but I don't blame you.
- 28:05I would also wear the T-shirt if you would instead of anchors.
- 28:09Yeah, next, next Arabic on I'll I'll wear it, see if everyone
- 28:13that's. Going to be a deep cut.
- 28:21Be very surprised. Yeah, for sure.
- 28:26So, favorite characters, Worst characters?
- 28:30Did they? Were there any characters?
- 28:31You were like, I can't wait to see them get beaten up.
- 28:36I don't think that was even the bad guys.
- 28:39It's like, you know, I want these guys to get beat, but I
- 28:44want them to win for a. Yeah.
- 28:47Because that characters are amazing, yeah.
- 28:53Yeah, the struggle is good and the fights are good as well,
- 28:57because I think you like, you're like, actually we're here for
- 29:00the show and whoever wins is kind of almost irrelevant at
- 29:04this point. I know the reason.
- 29:06Bigger plot. Yeah, yeah.
- 29:09What about you, Chris? Any.
- 29:10The same I kind of love to hate them so that that means that
- 29:14they're good villains, but not no.
- 29:18I don't know if that makes them a good villain because I liked
- 29:21to like, not like them, but if they were they, I think the
- 29:25series would be shit. Yeah, wouldn't be as good.
- 29:30It definitely makes them a good heel for in terms of the whole,
- 29:34yeah, yeah. Even the with when the other
- 29:38Hercules Academy, the the snake guy, even even I was like that's
- 29:43amazing. Just constricting him and the
- 29:48tech. Terry the kid Chuck some peanuts
- 29:50at him. Yeah, I do love, I do like how
- 29:59they problem solve the fights as well in this because it's like
- 30:01it'll always be something that they've learned in training from
- 30:04their mental character, which is sometimes their father.
- 30:06It's sometimes it's like someone who has been a father like
- 30:10figure. There's a lot of dad stuff in
- 30:12this as well as there being some mum stuff.
- 30:15Yeah, yeah. And I kind of love I kind of
- 30:19love waiting for the turning point each time And Terry, the
- 30:25kids one I really love because he's like, no, I want to wrestle
- 30:28like other people who are much cooler.
- 30:30And then you see him like settle into his own.
- 30:34He's a White Star. I loved I loved that kind of I
- 30:37think he was my favorite character, even though I do
- 30:39think it's like his whole like his whole family where they're
- 30:42from is ridiculous. They're just out here wrestling
- 30:47cows just for I can see no like farming no like farming reason
- 30:56why they would need to like wrestle cows with their bare
- 30:59hands, but they. Are it's not something stupid
- 31:02like that they make the ground beef for bustling it, but no,
- 31:07maybe like beaten down today. Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 31:20What suplex under depth? I want to know the end the
- 31:27Walruskman's back story as well because after I've genuinely
- 31:30watched 44 episodes I can't remember.
- 31:34Is it good? I don't think they go into it
- 31:38that much. He's he.
- 31:39They cut like a. Tiny Bat, but from what I
- 31:44remember Tiny Bat as well, the money went that what Hopefully,
- 31:48yeah, because there's went a lot of other people's.
- 31:54I mean, there's three seasons, so.
- 31:56There are three seasons. I have a feeling Walrus Man will
- 31:59get his redemption and then that's where we'll see like the
- 32:02real meaningful stuff. But yeah, you don't see a, you
- 32:05don't see a lot from him, but you do see him chilling in the
- 32:09hospital and having like a really good energy.
- 32:13Like he seems like a very good loser.
- 32:15He's just like out here trying to support his mates, building
- 32:20everyone up. I think just, you know.
- 32:23After he saw me big fish in the backroom down the minute, that's
- 32:28all I've seen. And he is also part walrus.
- 32:33Yeah. Because that's the other thing I
- 32:36don't understand are, are these, are these people mutants?
- 32:39Are they, is he, is he half walrus, half man?
- 32:43Is he a man in a walrus costume? Is Dick Dick 1 Dick half half a
- 32:49half a Dick? I think she's all bets.
- 32:56I think he's all bet. Tagline ultimate muscle.
- 33:03It's all deck. Yeah, yeah, that's that.
- 33:13I secretly also hope that we get like commentator back story.
- 33:17You do hear them talking about their wives and stuff, which
- 33:20feels very real. Like they they talk about their
- 33:24lives, but you don't get the flashback, but you do with the
- 33:26wrestlers. I don't.
- 33:28Think that was in the script. I think they just share their
- 33:31own stories, like here's a script, talk about yourselves,
- 33:35There's that I. Think it's a lot.
- 33:39You could occasionally if you could talk about these moves,
- 33:41that's great, but just have a chat, yeah.
- 33:47I'm sure that some of like a lot of this must have been ad libbed
- 33:51as well. This script, yeah.
- 33:55And it it feels it. Yeah, it feels like the voices.
- 34:00We're just having a laugh all. Right.
- 34:02So let's say any advisory, you know.
- 34:04Yeah, yeah, yeah, I think so. I think he's got that energy.
- 34:09And I think that's part of why the jokes land so well, because
- 34:12the jokes aren't, they're not amazing.
- 34:14They are like dad jokes and they're super cheesy, but
- 34:18because they feel off the cuff you're like, that's quite funny.
- 34:23Throw in the occasional fart and I'm a happy gal.
- 34:30I got the. Form they definitely throw in
- 34:31all that farts. Also, I love it that what other
- 34:37anime do you know that in its theme tune it has the word
- 34:40flatulence? Yeah, highbrow.
- 34:50Oh yeah. I mean, not that even Rain in
- 34:52FEMPE spoke about that and their theme song and that's
- 34:56essentially just a fart shot for the entire one of that fart
- 35:01joke. Joke and they couldn't even
- 35:06figure out how to put flatulence in the.
- 35:09But I really love that it's flatulence.
- 35:11It's not fart. It's not far as flatulence.
- 35:14It's flatulence. Or making a fart joke that we're
- 35:17classy about. It exactly we're going to find
- 35:21something to rhyme with this we're going to make sure that we
- 35:23really think this through yeah for.
- 35:28Sure, that's what we insensor thing it's got to be, isn't it?
- 35:32Oh. Yeah.
- 35:34Do you think? I just think it was art
- 35:37operates. But it could be, it could be a
- 35:43weird sense of thing. And then what?
- 35:45And this does feel like this is from the air.
- 35:47Like the fact that they've got different names makes me think
- 35:49there are different versions for different censorship laws
- 35:55because Gazelle man, as opposed to Dick Dick, that feels like a
- 36:00sensitive censorship choice. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 36:07I didn't realize that meat was called Alexandria meat.
- 36:11Yeah. Yeah, please refer to him by his
- 36:14full name because should I get in the respect he deserves?
- 36:20Yeah, Alexandria meat, which also and calling someone by
- 36:24their surname, Pillsbury Public School.
- 36:29Either he's got either he's been to boarding school or there is
- 36:32some sort of army energy in it. Probably the latter, I'm going
- 36:39to guess. Probably.
- 36:40Yeah, yeah, yeah. And what were some of the, like,
- 36:45the high moments for you so far up to what you've watched?
- 36:50What, like, where were you like? Yes.
- 36:53It was it was the far off these Dad.
- 36:58Yeah. I mean that that's all that
- 37:00formulas are. Definitely.
- 37:03Didn't you watch more? Yeah.
- 37:06The fastest, the highest moment in the Porter.
- 37:08I don't care. I've seen that.
- 37:10I want to know where it goes. Stay.
- 37:12I'm in. There's a lot of father son
- 37:14stuff here that I can relate to. Let's go.
- 37:20Yeah. No.
- 37:21Oh, man. That was the bit that made me
- 37:22think Chris should watch this with his son because I was like,
- 37:26see, both of them are going to love me.
- 37:29And there was a bit before that where his dad was like this
- 37:33absolutely massive blow. And then he starts tickling them
- 37:37and he says, I've just arranged my fat so it looks like X and
- 37:40muscles. Watch out, he turns in this
- 37:44decrepit old man. Yes.
- 37:47And I love that he seems to be like really serious, but
- 37:50actually he's just like holding his breath, like when you suck
- 37:52in your stomach. So it's not that he's like
- 37:56really angry at everyone. You just can't like can't speak
- 37:59unless it ruins his old look. Yes.
- 38:05It it was the way because he had an unbreakable move where he
- 38:11tangles them up in the ropes at the side of the ring and he used
- 38:14to say, oh, every move is unbreakable.
- 38:16Think back to like what I've taught you.
- 38:18And he teaches them pulling his finger and farting.
- 38:20And he said, oh, can you just can you just check me?
- 38:23Check me underpants. I think the writing up that he
- 38:25farted experience. That's.
- 38:31That's what I realised. Yeah, this is funny.
- 38:34This is good. I also think in that flashback
- 38:38there's something that makes me really feel for Molly because I
- 38:41know that you and Finney sometimes corner her and fart on
- 38:44her. Yeah, Yeah, we're doing.
- 38:48And the energy of that flashback was very bad.
- 38:55The bum following through was like a frying pan to the face or
- 38:58something. And I mean that that was too
- 39:03fair. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 39:05I have no one saying that she does not deserve to beat the
- 39:09hell out of them after that. Yeah, yeah.
- 39:15Good, beautiful thing. Yeah.
- 39:20I think for that was a highlight for me as well.
- 39:22I was just giggling like a like, like a fairy.
- 39:26Very lowbrow. Very not lowbrow.
- 39:30No, I'm going to say that it's to put the art in fart so I'll
- 39:40skip. I think we've all done this but
- 39:41we always ask towards the end of the episode, would you watch
- 39:44past episode 3? And the answer is.
- 39:48I think, I think, I think I've watched about 7:00 or 8:00
- 39:52there. So yeah, I've gone.
- 39:56In bed while I can't sleep tonight.
- 39:58Is that I think that's the perfect place.
- 40:00It's like when you just need to veg out somewhere.
- 40:03This is going to be a good anime to put on.
- 40:06Yeah, yeah, yeah. For me, this is like that.
- 40:08I've had a fun Saturday night and I'm regretting Sunday
- 40:11mornings kind of anime. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 40:18What about you, Chris? Def I'm I'm going to get Sydney
- 40:21in on this, yeah. Yeah, it is time I have to make
- 40:28him an anime fan. He do love it.
- 40:30I didn't try to make him well, not make him.
- 40:34I did today try to introduce a one piece but then I realized
- 40:37that they say bastard and stuff in it and I was like oh I kind
- 40:40of teach a 5 year old but. Ah, you can't.
- 40:45Well, not when I get the coward. If he gets it picked up from
- 40:49school I'm not bothered. You've just got to wait.
- 40:53You're just going to wait a few, like a few months and he'll have
- 40:56picked up and then you couldn't do it.
- 40:57One piece. I yeah, I think this would be
- 41:02more fun than one piece for him anyway, because it's just a bit
- 41:06more bit more goofy when you're you're a little one.
- 41:10Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 41:14Nice. What where would you want to see
- 41:17it go? Like what are the So we've
- 41:19already said we want to see more Walrus man back story.
- 41:23Yes. What other kind of stories,
- 41:27themes are you themes like this is?
- 41:29I don't think we're going we're going to.
- 41:31We don't need to expect themes from Ultimate Muscle, but we
- 41:33might good stories. So themes I was like.
- 41:39Where am I? Stop taking yourself so
- 41:40seriously. What other stories are you
- 41:45hoping for? Like any big reveals or things
- 41:48that you're hoping to see from the rest of the series?
- 41:50If you do, watch past. I want to see some evil quorns
- 41:55that beat them, don't just a bet they off so they have to go back
- 42:00and train a bit more to be a wee bit better than themselves.
- 42:05And then all of a sudden the eyes on or somebody just left
- 42:09some drugs. All high.
- 42:10We've been actually fight ourselves.
- 42:12We were just really high. You could see that happening.
- 42:16It'd be fair. And I.
- 42:18I can see that happening. Sounds like I'd eat these
- 42:21restaurants totally because most of them were high at the tech
- 42:25there's. A lot of people coming out
- 42:30wiping their nose. Sure.
- 42:34Yeah, yeah. It's from the sweat though,
- 42:36isn't it? Yeah, yeah.
- 42:38This wipe. Yeah.
- 42:39Yeah. Why us?
- 42:40Oh, they had the sniffles or something.
- 42:42I mean, you know, they're only humid.
- 42:47Yeah. Yeah.
- 42:48What about you, Chris? Any like what you got and say?
- 42:52Every character in this is trapped like a main character at
- 42:55some point. So you got to get all of the
- 42:57back stories, everyone's motivations.
- 43:00And so far I want to see more of the evil ones.
- 43:04Like I want to know what the crack was with a with a snake
- 43:07man or do you know? I don't know who it is.
- 43:10And the three people in the ring, one of them is the English
- 43:14one who does the Big Ben bomb and the two other ones who were
- 43:19like interested in the merch deal of I would know what their
- 43:22backstop it's where'd they go, what they did, who?
- 43:26Are these hustlers? Yeah.
- 43:31Yeah, yeah, for sure. I really, I there's this one
- 43:37character that comes in a bit later.
- 43:38He's like just a big talking telephone guy.
- 43:42Right. Well, like a physical telephone.
- 43:47Like an actually he's like, but like a really blocky 80s mobile
- 43:51phone with arms and like really hench arms and legs.
- 43:56Like he did not skip Friday. And I kind of want to see more
- 44:05objects, more objects, people. It's just like, he's really
- 44:09silly. He's like, what could you like?
- 44:13And also like the way that they try and make different, like
- 44:16there's a shoe villain, there's a telephone villain.
- 44:19And how they try and make these, well, they don't try.
- 44:22I think they succeed quite well. Like how to make these guys
- 44:25scary and how their attacks are so powerful, but at the end of
- 44:31the day is just someone fighting a giant shoe.
- 44:34I want to see more of that. Yeah, yeah.
- 44:39Do they have like, do they have like heartfelt backstories and
- 44:42stuff? I just want to see like a a
- 44:43weird flashback of like a tiny little restless shoe, like
- 44:48getting berated by his dad or something.
- 44:52You're going to have so much fun, Chris.
- 44:54Get in. Definitely need to watch this.
- 44:58Right. And I do think the villains,
- 45:00they, I think they do as good a job with the villains as they do
- 45:03with the heroes of like making, making you want to root for
- 45:07them. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 45:11There is no loser in this because it's like whoever wins,
- 45:13you're like. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 45:18The the creators of this must have just like 2 wheels, one
- 45:21with the couldn't place, it couldn't be of origin and one
- 45:24with object. OK, we're going to have a.
- 45:32Brazilian phone man. It looks like we've got an Irish
- 45:40spade. Yeah, it can be wild.
- 45:48I kind of I just want to see like how how how many wacky
- 45:51options can they keep throwing in?
- 45:53Because so because they're all very different and at some point
- 45:56they're going to they. Yeah, I just would like to see
- 45:59if they can sustain it for three series without ever repeating
- 46:02anything. Most.
- 46:04I mean the manga has been going since the 80s or something isn't
- 46:08it? Yeah, yeah.
- 46:11Yeah, and they're still, they're still releasing it.
- 46:15There's there's ones every now and again.
- 46:17They're not doing them consistently.
- 46:20I think the last one was 2020 I think.
- 46:25OK, but it's still quite recent. Though so.
- 46:27So it's like it's been going a while.
- 46:29Yeah. So that's about 42 years.
- 46:35That's that's kind of, yeah. And they have still run out of
- 46:39ideas. Yeah.
- 46:41And also, for something that's been going so long, I feel like
- 46:44this isn't something that comes up in people's anime rosters
- 46:46very much. It feels like an underrated
- 46:51goofy time. Yeah.
- 46:53I mean, yeah, yeah. Because that's, you know, that's
- 46:56in line with things like One Piece and Naruto and maybe not
- 47:02in terms of volume of anime. And I think that maybe that's
- 47:06also a selling point. Like you can get, you can get in
- 47:09on something that's thinking like been released for a long
- 47:12time has some good, good enough stuff that you can dive into it,
- 47:18but also you're not going to have to devote the next year of
- 47:23your life to catching up. Yeah, absolutely.
- 47:28Which is nice. So, and obviously it is this is
- 47:33I think this is 2002 when Ultimate Muscle was showing on
- 47:37the telly. How do you feel like it holds up
- 47:40into and we've talked a bit about some of the some of the
- 47:46characters that might not get green but nowadays.
- 47:49Yeah. But outside, what do you think?
- 47:54After I think it will talk like I'll be watching this with
- 47:58Finley and not worried or anything.
- 47:59Like yeah, still funny as well. I mean, farts can never not be
- 48:06funny. Is the fart the universal like?
- 48:12Yeah, it definitely I still. Laugh.
- 48:14I think so. I mean, I think people take
- 48:22things too seriously and then when they watch things from a
- 48:27while ago, they go, oh, that's not right.
- 48:29That wasn't right time, but nobody cared.
- 48:34So why do you Care now? I've I've said to the people,
- 48:38they've spoke about things or they couldn't make that nowadays
- 48:42as the example I use is Greece couldn't make that in the 70s,
- 48:47but they did. It was outdated and the 70s when
- 48:52they made it and it was based in the 50s and it was outdated for
- 48:55the 50s. Nothing has gone in or offend
- 49:00everybody. And if you get offended by
- 49:01selling me things like that, then don't watch anything.
- 49:06Especially, yes, this, this isn't for if you're, if you're
- 49:10feeling very earnest about the state of the world, you might
- 49:14need this. It might not land well with you.
- 49:17But I do think this is needed because I think sometimes, and
- 49:21especially in anime, people get really impassioned.
- 49:23And I think it's lovely that people feel like this real deep
- 49:26connection to anime shows. I don't think anyone's good
- 49:30going to be like, you can't say that about ultimate Muscle,
- 49:33Like, And if you are that, you've missed the point for
- 49:40sure. Like, I think this is, yeah,
- 49:42this is something that isn't going to take itself too
- 49:44seriously. It's just a bit of fun.
- 49:47Yeah, Try not to worry about it. And pull my finger.
- 49:59That's so good. Thank you so much for coming to
- 50:02talk about Ultimate Muscle. Are there any like closing
- 50:04thoughts before we wrap up if? You want to start watching
- 50:12anime? Start with something like this.
- 50:16Don't start with something serious and wrong and dark.
- 50:20You don't want to get into the dark anime straight away.
- 50:23Geez yourself in with something like this and then you can move
- 50:28on. Yeah, so it was something
- 50:31brightly coloured and yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 50:33Yeah, and not and not start with fascism.
- 50:35Not start besides brittle. I was just thinking about
- 50:40because there's so many deaths about in weird ways as well, so
- 50:44many yards exploding and I was sex when I watched that, where
- 50:52you go and ride the school going.
- 50:57Yeah, it was. My cousin got a tea.
- 51:01How old? That's how long ago it was.
- 51:04I take and he's ah, we should watch that.
- 51:06So we watched that. I was like, can I copy that?
- 51:08So I copied that and I gave it to everybody.
- 51:14That's a proper anime origin story.
- 51:17Yeah, that's that, definitely. How did the old become maniacs?
- 51:21We watched Fest of the North Star.
- 51:23We watched sex. There's a thing like, so I got
- 51:28really into comics with a my dad used to like, feed me comics as
- 51:32a kid, but one that he fed me when I was four, way too young
- 51:35and permanently scarred me for life.
- 51:37Is it one called When the Wind Blows by Raymond Briggs, the guy
- 51:41who did this? Yeah, Yeah.
- 51:46But if anyone's ever seen or read When the Wind Didn't Blows.
- 51:51It's nothing like the snowman. Shit, absolutely not Snowman.
- 51:57It's one of the most horrific things I've ever seen.
- 52:01It reads like an Mr. James doll. It's basically just like the
- 52:08slow it's nuclear apocalypse followed by a lovely old couple
- 52:12slowly dying of radiation poisoning in graphic detail.
- 52:18I know what that is now, Stark. Yeah.
- 52:27So I think you need and when you've been fed media like that,
- 52:31sometimes you need a bit of old. Yeah, you just offset it.
- 52:35But thank you so much for coming to talk to us, Kevin.
- 52:40It's I've had Kev. Kevin.
- 52:43Kev, Kevin, I've been called what?
- 52:48I was about to make a really bad joke and I'm just going to do
- 52:50that once we finished recording, but where can people find you if
- 52:55they want to find what you're up to, like what you want?
- 52:58Is there anything you want to promo or shout out?
- 53:02Well, I have match and which is the gentle bar.
- 53:05We are outboard shorts almost every day and I'm going to start
- 53:12getting back at it in long form .8 because then have the
- 53:16computer. But now we've got that.
- 53:18Now we just need to plan. Let me get that.
- 53:20You can also find me on broad as gender and if you search that
- 53:23up, make sure you put in Raw as ginger wrestling because if you
- 53:27don't, you get put in a equal cooking with raw ginger.
- 53:30And so that's not what I do, get my ginger before I get to set.
- 53:38But yeah, Raw's ginger wrestling.
- 53:42Excellent. I'm on I'm on all the social
- 53:46goods YouTube. Hey Harry, for me behalf of them
- 53:50start to come down from the detailers.
- 53:54That's fair, that's completely fair.
- 53:57We do require all our guests are very high on painkillers.
- 54:01That's otherwise we are insufferable when this goes out.
- 54:08Obviously we're recording this ahead of time because this will
- 54:10be one of our lovely December episodes.
- 54:13So we don't really know what's going to be next week at this
- 54:16point. Normally this is where we'd be
- 54:17like, hey, so check out stuff. So instead I'm just going to say
- 54:21hit the subscribe button if you want to find out more and keep
- 54:25up to date with what we're doing.
- 54:26We'll also put in the description a link to all of the
- 54:29gentle dork and raw is ginger stuff so you can find Kevin
- 54:34where he's working. And in the meantime, just thanks
- 54:37everyone. Go have a fun farting time.
- 54:40Yeah. Oh, I'd love it if I could just
- 54:46like, pop one out right now, just on demand.
- 54:51Should have thought about that. Got some side effects.
- 54:54Oh, you're still recording? Great.
