- 0:00You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:02Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:04On our podcast, the goal is not just to share our sermons, but
- 0:08to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're learning and
- 0:10what God is doing in us and in our community.
- 0:13This fall, we're living in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke,
- 0:16and John and learning how to live from our model, Jesus.
- 0:19This conversation was inspired by our series The Gospels.
- 0:23You can find more information about our church at
- 0:25fumccollingswood.org. Thanks for joining us for this
- 0:29conversation. I think yesterday I called you
- 0:34our fearless leader, and you do fear the Lord, so I apologize.
- 0:40I do fear the Lord, that is true.
- 0:42That, and are there any new fears since your knee surgery?
- 0:50No, I'm, I'm doing OK. I think I overdid it a little
- 0:54bit on Saturday, go into one of the boys football games.
- 1:00I I think initially I underestimated the difference
- 1:04between arthroscopic surgery and open incision surgery and.
- 1:13Which one did you get and why did you overestimate?
- 1:16Well, so my shoulder was arthroscopic.
- 1:20Like they just put in the little probes and cameras and did all
- 1:23the things through like 3 little holes in my shoulder on my knee.
- 1:29There's like a three inch incision where they had to like
- 1:32get in there and cut the tendon open and do all kinds of stuff
- 1:37like that. And yeah, that hurts more, the
- 1:41incision itself. So I think that's where my
- 1:45underestimation came. But doing good on less drugs
- 1:50than I was yesterday and you know, each day I wake up and
- 1:55feels a little better than it did the day before.
- 1:59Still make communion bread for Sunday that.
- 2:01Was really good and they did an incredible job.
- 2:04Yeah. And I was like, do we have a new
- 2:07official communion pastor? I was so glad that he was able
- 2:12to do that and then was great with doing the benediction.
- 2:17I was like, oh, I can just receive communion and be done.
- 2:20There you go. Shake hands, kiss babies better
- 2:23than. Kissing hands and shaking
- 2:24babies. Depends on the day, depends on
- 2:28the babies. Yeah.
- 2:30Very not super young. We're not talking like the bad
- 2:34for their health. Shaking baby syndrome.
- 2:36Yeah, yeah, not that kind. But I don't say I preach.
- 2:40You're supposed to be asking me questions, Scott.
- 2:42Yeah, that's true. So go into your sermon from
- 2:49Sunday in which you portrayed Jesus, Allah, Rocky, you know
- 2:58every man in Philly. A good chunk of South
- 3:02Philadelphia, yeah. Specifically, yeah.
- 3:05But kind of like the every man, the like the common man, the you
- 3:10know, and tried to help us see it from a modern lens.
- 3:18But but what was kind of your inspiration for that?
- 3:22You know, we we read stories from Scripture all the time.
- 3:28And I think most of the time pastors try to get people to put
- 3:34themselves into that situation, right?
- 3:38And so they like try to explain what it would have been like and
- 3:41all those kind of things. But but what led you to kind of
- 3:44reverse it? And bring the.
- 3:46Story to us. Yeah, so I've been prefacing
- 3:50with people and also having people pray for me because this
- 3:54sermon was very unique to me in preparation and also in tools at
- 4:03my disposal in the pulpit. I'll, I'll say it that way.
- 4:07I had that out there. People praying afterwards, even
- 4:10one of our youth was like, what was different?
- 4:14So for me it was, it was subtle, but it's almost exactly kind of
- 4:19what you touched on. I'm good at storytelling
- 4:23naturally. Not from the pulpit, I would
- 4:26say. And from the pulpit, I don't
- 4:30think I have a single time shared a fictional story because
- 4:36I feel like I'm not good at constructing them.
- 4:38And also, if I do it too much, I feel like the tension and focus
- 4:45becomes on that story and not it doesn't enhance the scripture
- 4:50we're looking at. It turns us away from the
- 4:53scripture we're looking at. And so for this one, I was doing
- 4:57Lectio Davina from one of my books for school.
- 5:01So we have which? Give me a 32nd.
- 5:03And one, that's a great question I was going to ask you because
- 5:08from what I understand, Lectio Davina is very similar to our
- 5:12prayer session format in which you are like.
- 5:17And it's, it's been a practical way of engaging scripture that's
- 5:23been taught for over 1000 years. I'm going to nerd out for a
- 5:27second because I'm in school. So when they, like, started
- 5:30making, like, colleges and schools and people were learning
- 5:34theology, theology originally was the practice of, like, being
- 5:40a Christian. It wasn't necessarily all the
- 5:42theoretical beliefs of God, but like, this is how you learn to
- 5:47walk with God. And Lecchio Davina was one of
- 5:51those things in which they continue to teach even, Yeah,
- 5:55hundreds of years after its origin.
- 5:57So it's kind of like silencing yourself before God, praying
- 6:03before you get into the Scripture, reading the
- 6:06scripture. And then at least in the way
- 6:10this book formats it, it gives a little more context to it.
- 6:14It then asks you to like, imagine yourself in the story if
- 6:19it's that kind of scripture. And then it also gives you some
- 6:24poignant questions to reflect on as you're reflecting on the
- 6:27Scripture and then praying for Lord, how does this change me
- 6:34and my walk and how I follow you?
- 6:36And that's kind of the way the book's formatted.
- 6:38And so I really, really enjoyed the book.
- 6:42I've already given it to youth, and there's a young adult that's
- 6:45interested in it. Because sometimes just having
- 6:48that, this is what you do now, this is the next step that like
- 6:52helps provoke instead of feeling like you're going blind into a
- 6:56part of Scripture. Yeah.
- 6:57And kind of a more simpler version of Lectio Divina
- 7:02version. That's what it means.
- 7:04It's not like some fancy name. It's just what they called it
- 7:08and when they developed it, Yeah.
- 7:11It's a dead language and we're still using it.
- 7:12It's pretty fancy, yeah. But reading the scripture,
- 7:15reading through a passage of scripture generally out loud,
- 7:19even if you're alone, because there's, there's a process that
- 7:23happens when we see the word and speak the word and hear the word
- 7:27that opens us up to what God is saying.
- 7:30And, and you just come to asking, you know, God, what do
- 7:34you want to say? Are there things you want to
- 7:35highlight? And then you might do that a
- 7:39couple times. And then if you're doing
- 7:42something guided, there might be questions for reflection.
- 7:44Or if you're just kind of doing on your own, you might just kind
- 7:47of see what God is leading you to, where he's highlighting
- 7:51things, what He is speaking to you out of those things.
- 7:56If you wanted to try it and you've never tried it, there's
- 8:00an app you can download called Lectio 365.
- 8:06It comes from the 24/7 prayer movement.
- 8:10And then they do three times a day.
- 8:12They've got a Lectio on there that you can kind of work your
- 8:16way through. Which does not mean that if you
- 8:19download the app, you have to commit to three times a day, no.
- 8:23You you could just try it once and then delete delete the app
- 8:26if you wanted to, but it's worth trying.
- 8:28Yeah, absolutely. So I, I was going through that
- 8:32section of scripture and it said to like, imagine yourself and,
- 8:36or like, imagine it happening and kind of this whole picture
- 8:42started coming together, which I shared on Sunday.
- 8:46And then as I'm like rounding out the picture in my head and
- 8:52trying to explain it, I get to a point where I'm like, OK, I feel
- 8:57like this is God providing something for Sunday, but I'm
- 9:01not seeing how what the ultimate points are to get from the story
- 9:08and how this helps us get there. So praying, rereading, all that
- 9:14kind of stuff and kind of landing at these three parts of
- 9:22hoping, going and praying. And I pretty much like, and I
- 9:27felt like I was so prepared and extremely underprepared
- 9:31simultaneously. Like I had almost the whole
- 9:33thing by like Wednesday. And then I was like, I don't
- 9:37know, it's just this, this weird balance of, OK, I have the
- 9:40points. I know this is going to get us
- 9:42there. And the past year, maybe a
- 9:45little plus I've been doing like primarily manuscript ish notes.
- 9:49Or at least I do a manuscript and then strip it down.
- 9:53But every time I do a manuscript for my sermon, I feel like I'm
- 9:58hitting certain beats and it restricts my freedom of speech
- 10:02and connecting to the people that are listening.
- 10:06And that it becomes, the more I rehearse it over and over and
- 10:11over and over again, the more that's how I end up at my like
- 10:17monotone ish somber thing. Yeah, on Sunday mornings, it
- 10:22kind of loses the passion and intensity that I start out with
- 10:28or that God gives me for certain parts or topics or themes.
- 10:34And it's like, OK, I just need to make sure that I get that
- 10:36information out there, this really important information out
- 10:38there. And so I was like, OK, I don't
- 10:42want to like hyper fixate on certain phrases or sentences.
- 10:48Like I know the story, I know the image, I know the pieces.
- 10:52So then I had a much more bare boned notes on the pulpit.
- 10:56I had maybe like 2 1/2 pages instead of eight.
- 11:00And then even as we got like to Saturday and I was like, OK, let
- 11:05me just make sure look over. That's when he provided the
- 11:10Romans 1513 and the story of Peter being prayed for.
- 11:15I was like, yeah, it's easy to say like hope and pray.
- 11:20I don't know. It just seems like, yeah, we
- 11:22know we're supposed to do that. And and it's like, OK, but it's
- 11:26really important that we do that.
- 11:28We need to see like scripturally that like this is what we need,
- 11:33like what we're called to and and but also that we're not
- 11:36alone and maybe are disappointment or disbelief in
- 11:42what God can do since we've been kind of rehearsed into this
- 11:49convince someone to go to church and if they keep going,
- 11:52eventually they will believe. I feel like that can be the
- 11:55evangelism, a lot of a lot of churches and that's I was like,
- 11:59OK, how do I tell them like, yes, we still do that, but that
- 12:04isn't the only or end goal of evangelism.
- 12:08Or it's like, OK, attending a Sunday morning is the only way
- 12:13to hear the gospel versus like, go and tell them the gospel.
- 12:16Sure. Yeah.
- 12:18Yeah, hot take. The goal of evangelism is not to
- 12:23get people to come to. Church agreed, but I didn't know
- 12:31how to say that. Yeah, in the church service,
- 12:34yeah, but I'm getting into all the complexities, right?
- 12:36It's not because while we absolutely affirm, not just
- 12:41because it gives us homes and pays our bills, that it is
- 12:45important for people to come and be part of a worshipping
- 12:48community where they are built up in the faith.
- 12:53But the goal of evangelism isn't to get people to come to church,
- 12:56It's to get people to know Jesus so that they can they can be
- 13:03changed and transformed by his grace, which in part comes to us
- 13:09through the church. But But the goal isn't to get
- 13:12good churchgoers. And I think people who may even
- 13:17desire that think that the church is the best way for them
- 13:21to receive that. Yeah.
- 13:24And then the fruit of that would be they stop doing whatever bad
- 13:28thing that the person trying to tell them about God perceives.
- 13:33And then they attend church regularly.
- 13:35If we succeed at no longer, I don't know, keying people's cars
- 13:40and then we start attending two or three times a month, then
- 13:44like we've succeeded in the changed life.
- 13:48And, and it's not a this church perspective.
- 13:51This isn't just 2025 perspective.
- 13:55I think it's it it grew and grew in the expectations of the
- 13:58American church decades and decades ago.
- 14:02And so a lot of us have grown up with that just being the norm.
- 14:08And not seeing that in Scripture should make us question if the
- 14:14norm is right. Yeah, as I study the Reformation
- 14:19and they started questioning all the norms and and it's I, I
- 14:25thought Reformation was like 1 and done.
- 14:27I was thinking it was like Martin Lutheran did the paper.
- 14:30Right 95. Theses yeah, this stuff is
- 14:32actually kind of messed up. And then a bunch of people split
- 14:37and we're done. And then we had some big voices
- 14:40that helped shape that new split, but it was like 4 or
- 14:44five, like, oh sure, big reformations and changes of
- 14:49thought that happened. So you had like the Lutheran
- 14:51Reformation that took place in Germany and all that, but then
- 14:54you also had the. Swigley.
- 14:58Swingley in Switzerland and then John Calvin and his group, and
- 15:04then he had the Anabaptist who kind of split off in what they
- 15:08call the radical Reformation. But then even something that
- 15:13people aren't as familiar with is like, there was also an
- 15:16English Reformation, right, that gave rise to the Anglican
- 15:20Church. And you know, cynics will say,
- 15:24oh, it's just about Henry wanting to divorce his wife and
- 15:27not being able to. And I'm not saying that didn't
- 15:29play a role, but but there were so many other undercurrents that
- 15:34were all flowing and coming together.
- 15:37And if you're ever interested, got a great book.
- 15:41Yeah. It's like a 800 page history of
- 15:44the English Reformation. It's called Heretics and
- 15:46Believers. I read that in my fun time
- 15:50reading last year. You're sick.
- 15:55You're. Sick and and so that that idea
- 15:57of the Reformation and and things changing, right, it's
- 16:01because over time, other things keep trying to get into what God
- 16:07has actually called us to be as the church, right?
- 16:11And and so in a sense, the Reformation is the positive side
- 16:16of what's been called in recent years like deconstruction,
- 16:21right. There have been a lot of people
- 16:22talking about deconstruction. Unfortunately, it's led to a lot
- 16:26of people walking away from the church because they never get to
- 16:30the other side right there. There's a point where we need to
- 16:34kind of strip away some of those cultural and philosophical
- 16:39things that end up working their way into the church.
- 16:42But then where do we go, right? Where do we go with that?
- 16:48And where, where do you think we go with that?
- 16:52No. Pressure.
- 16:54No, but specifically, specifically in relation to this
- 17:00idea of how evangelism happens or how people come to know.
- 17:06Jesus, I I think that like we talked about what the
- 17:09Reformation is, a big thing that changed in those times was
- 17:14higher literacy rate and the Bible being available in native
- 17:18languages. And so instead of just receiving
- 17:24the word from pulpit only, I think a great part about this
- 17:28series is encouraging people to be in the word themselves and
- 17:31being in the Gospels themselves and reading it for themselves so
- 17:35that you have scripture to contrast against what anyone
- 17:40says about it. So I would say that for sure
- 17:44Step 1 and I think as you've read Scripture and it hopefully
- 17:50encourages you, I hope it encourages you and is D
- 17:54couraging a thing. Discourage, discourage,
- 17:57encourages and discourages you encourages you that all is
- 18:02possible with God and that he's able to do incredible things
- 18:08through anyone no matter what we've done, discourages all of
- 18:12your hopes you've put in the world that may not be satisfied
- 18:16as you follow Christ, which is it's it's a tough balance and
- 18:24sometimes pill to swallow of this thing isn't going to be
- 18:27guaranteed in this lifetime. And yet God provides something
- 18:31so much greater as as we were studying in Sunday school with
- 18:36our kids, the prodigal son and I love one of our students was
- 18:42like I'm with the older brother. I think it's the older brother
- 18:46that stayed around was like, why can't I get a goat?
- 18:50Yeah. And I if you quick refresh of
- 18:54the story, prodigal son inherit, takes inheritance, spoils it on
- 19:01on wild living. Wild living returns home, father
- 19:05happily receives him, throws a party.
- 19:08Older son stays back that whole time as a good son.
- 19:12And he's like, hey, he gets this big party.
- 19:14He was the bad kid. I've been around here the whole
- 19:17time. Where's my party and where's my
- 19:19I don't even get a goat. He gets the fattened calf and
- 19:22it's like, where's, where's my goat?
- 19:25And it's like, OK, let's take this to where we are now in our
- 19:29situations. What's the thing of this world
- 19:34that you think God should give you for being a faithful
- 19:38Christian? Yeah.
- 19:41And so one of the kids even even mentioned like grieving a loved
- 19:44one recently, like, Lord, I've been so good and faithful.
- 19:48I've prayed. Why couldn't I keep them around
- 19:51longer in this lifetime? Yeah.
- 19:54And we can do it with. Why can't I have an easier
- 19:57financial situation? Or this job that I wanted.
- 20:01Or there's a job that I want to get.
- 20:02Why can't you give me this raise or whatever it may be?
- 20:07And do you remember the father's response?
- 20:09All that I have is yours. You've been with me this whole
- 20:12time and everything that I have is yours or all that I have,
- 20:15right? Depending on translation, all
- 20:16that I have is yours. Because he meant that literally.
- 20:19Like yeah, he gave the other son the inheritance, so by default
- 20:23everything else belonged to this older son.
- 20:26And at the same time, the you've been here this whole time, that
- 20:31son has received work housing this entire time.
- 20:36So it's all the blessings and yet we look at the blessings of
- 20:39someone else or like, wait, but that one, that's the one I want.
- 20:44And so it's the acknowledging the blessings and also all that
- 20:47God has and offers to us that we may not even desire or seek
- 20:53after, but it's so much greater than anything we could imagine.
- 20:58So that balance of discourage and courage.
- 21:03And then as we transition that into how we view others, the
- 21:08hope we have for others because it's so easy, just like in that
- 21:12story, to get distracted by the earthly temptations and things
- 21:15that we see and not focus on what God can do, what God can
- 21:21provide in a situation is insurmountable.
- 21:24It's insurmountable. And then as we go, it's looking
- 21:28for those opportunities, looking for the people that need it.
- 21:32I don't think you're going to be like, well, I can't really think
- 21:35of anyone that could use the gospel.
- 21:39Because if you're having that problem, either you've isolated
- 21:43yourself into a bubble and you aren't really being in the
- 21:47world, not a part of the world, or I think your heart might be
- 21:52really separated from the Lords. And I don't think that anyone's
- 21:57going to find themselves that listens to this podcast in that
- 21:59situation. And so if we're in that latter
- 22:02half where we can think of those people, and you may may even be
- 22:08questioning like, how can I reach out to them?
- 22:10They're so hostile. They're so against Christianity.
- 22:13They're so all of these things. Pray not just for them, but also
- 22:18asking God on how you can be Jesus in their life.
- 22:23And also as we look at the examples of Jesus through this
- 22:26gospel series, what are ways in which I can love, in which I can
- 22:33demonstrate holy living and righteousness in ways that I can
- 22:37be holy, that they see the difference in me from the world
- 22:41and not from my glory, but to be able to point them to God and
- 22:45where it all is rooted from. So I think those are important
- 22:49aspects in addition to the praying for them.
- 22:51If they just say I never want to hear or see you again, or
- 22:56they're just on social media and they block you or whatever it
- 22:58might be, I don't know. But yeah, these are all really
- 23:01important things that again, as I ended my sermon with simple,
- 23:06not easy. Yeah, well, that's our
- 23:09conversation for today, but that doesn't mean the conversation is
- 23:13over. We'd love to hear your thoughts
- 23:14on these topics as well. To ask a question about anything
- 23:18we've discussed in this episode or to join the conversation, you
- 23:21can head over to fumccollingswood.org/podcast.
- 23:26Thanks for being part of this conversation.
