- 0:003rd John, let's pray. Lord Jesus, we thank you for
- 0:06today. We thank you for another
- 0:08opportunity to come and to sit at your feet and to dine with
- 0:11you, to Sup with you. God, we thank you for giving us
- 0:14life and life eternal. We thank you for all the words
- 0:17God breathed onto this book. Lord, thank you for giving us
- 0:22access to it. Thank You that we can come and
- 0:25we can reason, Lord, and we can sit and learn.
- 0:29Father, meditate upon your words, God, and munch upon them
- 0:33and eat them. God, we eat the scroll today
- 0:37that goes down bitter but tastes sweet.
- 0:39Father, we thank you God, for all of the things that you have
- 0:43taught us throughout our lives and throughout this walk with
- 0:46you. God, continue to speak boldly
- 0:49and mightily to us. God, continue to move us into
- 0:54the arenas that You would have us to go into.
- 0:56Father, help us to be the difference makers and the peace
- 1:00makers. Help us to be light and salt to
- 1:02this world. Help us, Lord, to hear Your
- 1:05voice and to know that you're near and to know that You are
- 1:08moving mightily in our midst. Father, come in touchdown like a
- 1:13fighter jet. God knocked the pictures off the
- 1:16wall. Come rushing in like a mighty
- 1:19rushing wind. Father, fresh fire, fresh wind.
- 1:23Today, God, give us the Shekinah glory where we cannot even
- 1:27minister unto you. Lord, I pray in the name, name
- 1:30of Jesus, that today will be the day of salvation for many.
- 1:34I pray in the name of Jesus that somebody somewhere will give
- 1:37their life over to you. Lord, hide me and hide my words
- 1:41and hide my thoughts. Holy Spirit, fill us.
- 1:44Fill us up today, overflowing. Lord, it's all about Jesus
- 1:48Christ. It's always been about Jesus
- 1:51Christ and it'll always be about Jesus Christ.
- 1:54To Him be the glory and the honor forever and ever and ever.
- 1:58And it's in his holy and awesome, in awe inspiring name
- 2:02that we pray today. Amen.
- 2:07Well, let's start in verse one, the elder unto the well beloved
- 2:14Gaius, whom I love in the truth. So there it is again.
- 2:20He wants us to drill down into this truth and he's balancing
- 2:25this third epistle with the love that he wrote in the first
- 2:32epistle, all about love. And here we are.
- 2:34We had second John that was dialing in truth, and then he
- 2:38just, he's going to dial it in even further and he's writing to
- 2:41Gaius here. We can surmise which Gaius this
- 2:46is in the Bible, but we don't actually know.
- 2:49Verse 2. Beloved, I wish above all things
- 2:53that you may prosper and be in health even as your soul
- 2:57prospers. So here, this is a very warm,
- 3:02familiar greeting of this time. And he's saying to be in good
- 3:06health and to be prosperous. And God desires for us to take
- 3:11care of our temple. He desires for us to be wise
- 3:15with what we have and to steward it well.
- 3:18But this is not some prosperity gospel, health and wealth gospel
- 3:22friends, that a lot of people try to attach this to.
- 3:25This is just a very, very simple greeting that he is saying and
- 3:30God is saying that He desires for us to be in good health and
- 3:35to be prosperous. And everything that we do,
- 3:38friends, and if we will take the Holy Spirit with us, everywhere
- 3:41that we go will be holy ground. And whenever you are eating your
- 3:47crusty bread with your glass of water, you can look and say, I
- 3:51have all this and Jesus and you are blessed.
- 3:55And anything that we have with Jesus Christ and in Jesus Christ
- 4:01is blessed. Friends, you can be in a prison
- 4:04cell and be blessed. You can be on the beach and be
- 4:09blessed in the mountains and be blessed.
- 4:10You can have much or little and be content and be blessed.
- 4:14Friends, This is the life with God.
- 4:16He and he calls us into the abundant life.
- 4:20And it's not about the external, it's not about the material,
- 4:24friends. It's all about being housed with
- 4:26the Holy Ghost and being able to see this world in the way that
- 4:30he does and to know that he's moving everything along
- 4:34according to His plan and that you are in that plan and you're
- 4:38in the sweet spot of life and you're exactly where you need to
- 4:41be. And you don't need to be washed
- 4:44up and tossed to and fro by every wind and wave that comes
- 4:48your way. You can be settled, friends, and
- 4:50that is what it looks like. To be prosperous and in in good
- 4:54health is to actually know that the Holy Spirit is in you and
- 4:59that you have confirmed your calling and election.
- 5:02Friends, as we have learned about verse three, I 4I rejoiced
- 5:07greatly when the brothers came and testified of the truth that
- 5:11is in you. Even as you walk in the truth.
- 5:14There it is truth and truth and truth.
- 5:17Friends, he's dialing it in and he's saying he's had a good
- 5:20report of Gaius, and it made him so incredibly happy to hear that
- 5:25Gaius is walking in the truth. For I have no greater joy than
- 5:31to hear that my children walk in the truth.
- 5:35So here the elder John writing to Gaius and he likens him to a
- 5:41child. He likens him to his children.
- 5:43But this is for us today to underline it, highlight it, put
- 5:48it as a screensaver on your phone.
- 5:50This is the greatest joy that a parent could ever have is to
- 5:54know that their children are authentically following after
- 5:58God Almighty. That is not just their parents
- 6:01faith anymore. It's not just them dragging them
- 6:04to church anymore. But the children have a vibrant,
- 6:08healthy relationship with God Almighty through His Son Jesus
- 6:12Christ. There is no greater pleasure.
- 6:15There is no greater honor, there is no greater joy that a parent
- 6:19can have than that. Five beloved, you do faithfully
- 6:26whatsoever you do to the brothers and to strangers.
- 6:30So he's talking about hospitality and back in this
- 6:34time the travelling ministers would come and they would
- 6:38understand who in that place was a believer, a brother in Christ,
- 6:43and they would expect to be put up and to have hospitality
- 6:47extended towards them. And here the elder John is
- 6:52writing to Gaius and he's saying you have done very well.
- 6:55You've made a name for yourself. And people are saying that you
- 6:59show hospitality. And he's going to let us know in
- 7:02the next verse or so that whenever we show hospitality to
- 7:07those that are doing the Lord's work, it is as if we are doing
- 7:12it ourselves. Some go and some send.
- 7:15And the ones that send and the ones that pray for those that
- 7:19are in the harvest are equal in their inheritance with those
- 7:25that are actually on the front lines.
- 7:28What an amazing thought that we can be partakers with those that
- 7:31are actually doing the work that are actually boots on the
- 7:35ground. Friends 6 which have borne
- 7:42witness of your charity before the Church, whom if you bring
- 7:47forward on their journey after a godly sort, you shall do well.
- 7:52So these travelling ministers have said in the churches that
- 7:56Gaius is putting them up and he's showing and extending
- 8:00hospitality to them. And the elder John wants to put
- 8:04a spotlight on Gaius and say well done, good and faithful
- 8:09servant, good job on supporting them and you were going to do
- 8:13well. Seven, because that for his
- 8:17namesake, they went forth taking nothing of the gentiles.
- 8:21So he's saying they don't need to go to the secular world and
- 8:25ask for handouts and ask for a meal or a place to stay, that
- 8:29the church is well able to be able to fulfill all the needs of
- 8:37those that are doing the Lord's work.
- 8:39And there is no lack in the Father's house, friends.
- 8:43The storehouse is packed and plentiful because God is the one
- 8:48who's orchestrating it all. There's no lack in His house,
- 8:52and you need to know that He has the most abundant resources in
- 8:57the entire world. But He gives them out in ways
- 9:00that increases our faith. God sometimes plays spiritual
- 9:04chicken with us as we don't know where the finances are going to
- 9:09come from, but we're stepping out in faith and God comes
- 9:12through in the very last minute. What an amazing God we serve.
- 9:15There's no lack in his house. He has the cattle on 1000 hills.
- 9:18He put the oar in the ground that we value our currency off
- 9:22of friends. He is our all sufficient
- 9:27supplier and provider of all of our needs.
- 9:29And he says be content with clothing and with food.
- 9:36Eight, We therefore ought to receive such that we might be
- 9:41fellow helpers to the truth. So he's saying we can be the
- 9:45fellow helpers. We can be those who even though
- 9:49we're not actually going out, but we're giving the
- 9:51hospitality, we're supporting them while they're on the front
- 9:55lines and it is as if we are the ones that are actually doing it.
- 9:59What an amazing God we serve. 9 I wrote unto the church, but
- 10:05Diotrophes, who loves to have the preeminence among them,
- 10:10received us. Not so here.
- 10:14John the Elder has written to the church, but this Diotrophes
- 10:20he is Rd. blocking John's letters and we're going to see
- 10:25what John has to say then. Wherefore if I come, I will
- 10:32remember his deeds, which he does, praying against us with
- 10:37malicious words and not content therewith.
- 10:40Neither does he himself receive the brothers and forbids them
- 10:45that would and cast them out of the church.
- 10:50This diopternes he is not a very nice guy.
- 10:55He is filled with the spirit of the Antichrist.
- 10:59He's Rd. blocking any of the good news to come into the
- 11:03church because he loves preeminence which is the
- 11:06original sin. It's the pride friends that got
- 11:10Lucifer cast out of his heavenly abode with 1/3 of the angels
- 11:16friends and you can see that this diopternes he is guilty of
- 11:21the same sin. 11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that
- 11:29which is good. He that does good is of God, but
- 11:33he that does evil has not seen God.
- 11:36So this is a perpetual lifestyle of evil.
- 11:39This is not the one off failures and moral failures and slips
- 11:44into sin, which the Holy Spirit reminds us is not of God and he
- 11:50convicts us of those sins and we repent, we confess, we return.
- 11:54It's it's not talking to those people.
- 11:57It's talking to those that are stuck in the perpetual lifestyle
- 12:02of sin and they see nothing wrong with it.
- 12:04They have not seen God. 12 Demetrius has good rapport of
- 12:11all men and of the truth itself. Yeah, and we also bear record,
- 12:16and you know that our record is true.
- 12:18So this godly Demetrius is in juxtaposition of the domineering
- 12:26Diotronese and his evil deeds. And you can see that John wanted
- 12:32Gaius to follow and listen to Demetrius and not to the
- 12:39Diotronese. 13 I had many things to write, but I will not with
- 12:45ink and pen write unto you, 14 But I trust I shall shortly see
- 12:51you, and we shall speak face to face.
- 12:54Peace be to you. Our friends salute you greet the
- 12:57friends by name. Perhaps John is being somewhat
- 13:04secretive in his writing so that he doesn't get anybody in
- 13:08trouble just in case the letter gets intercepted.
- 13:11We don't actually know, but you can surmise that this was
- 13:15written during a time of great persecution and John was very
- 13:20tactful not to get anyone into trouble.
- 13:25What an amazing book that we get to study and spend a lifetime
- 13:31reading and meditating upon. And you can see that Scripture
- 13:35interprets scripture and it's amazing.
- 13:37It's alive and active. I hope you've been blessed by
- 13:40this book. I know I sure have.
- 13:43I'm praying for you. I love you.
- 13:48We'll see you back here tomorrow.
- 13:49God bless you.
