- 3:09the Miracle Wall Finish. Now for today's mysterious adventure with Nick Carter. As
- 3:22today's story opens, it's near the end of the last racing season in World
- 3:24City. Nick and Patsy are walking back to Nick's office when Nick suddenly seizes
- 3:28Patsy's arm and says, holand Betsy, that woman coming out of the pawn
- 3:32chap looks familiar, but I can't place her. She's a good looking woman.
- 3:37Allow if that blonde hair of hers is natural, I'm a Chinese grandmother.
- 3:40She doesn't seem to be connected with crime in any way yet. And
- 3:44look who's trailing her, Benny Retzel. I know him right enough. He's
- 3:47a private cop for the Mutual Protective Agency, isn't he? Yes? And
- 3:51they're a choice out. But not to get mixed up with the slogan as
- 3:54you'll marry them and we trail them, I'll let them go. What do
- 3:58we care who's getting married? It was? Can just mind our own business.
- 4:01I'm going in the porn shop. I want to ask a few questions,
- 4:03But why what's it to us? Probably nothing, Just curious to know
- 4:08who that woman was. Go ahead and make a fool of yourself. She's
- 4:11probably nobody. Well, mister Cotta here so it's you. Well, yeah,
- 4:16I swear to you though I ain't guilty. Watch this. You're not
- 4:19guilty of whatever you say. I don't. I ain't, and I'll probably
- 4:24have it that. That's not why I'm here. Who is that good looking
- 4:27blond that just went out of here? Or no, but I don't such
- 4:30a one. She is the life of Colonel Pembuth, no less Colonel Pembrith,
- 4:33the big horse race man. Yeah, that's the one. And you
- 4:36know, if I was a betting man, carter, which I ain't,
- 4:40and see if the Colonel had a horse running at the takt this afternoon,
- 4:43I'd put a bet down on him, on the colonel or the horse.
- 4:46Such a christ of the colonel. He could have been a horse race maybe
- 4:48coin w what's the stary. It's just a hunch, that's all. But
- 4:53when a dame asks me to give her three thousand dollars, I'm a sting
- 4:56of oiled work, maybe ten thousand, and swear she'll read the twenty four
- 5:00dollars. And if she's married to us sling of fast horses, well you
- 5:04can make your own guess, and it would still be a guess. Take
- 5:06me to the races, Nick, Why should I I want to win some
- 5:10money by betting on the colonel's horse? You know, the colonel. Oh?
- 5:13Yes, I know I'm slightly but I hardly think. Oh come on,
- 5:15Nick, it'll be fun out there anyway. I love horses, all
- 5:17right, but don't expect me to pay your betting losses. You're strictly on
- 5:21your own out there. Oh, it's always a thrill to me to be
- 5:32in the paddock where you can see the horses close to gosh, there's such
- 5:36beautiful things. You certainly are. Oh, there's the colonel in this party.
- 5:40Let's roll over there. There's a wife too. Yeah, it looks
- 5:44more interested than the young man beside her that she does in the colonel.
- 5:46Maybe she is. He's much better looking, not so old either. Hello,
- 5:49Colonel Pembered, how are you? Oh? Hello Carter? Fine?
- 5:51Thanks? I believe you know my wife I don't, but I'm happy to
- 5:56thank you. Mister Carter. This is miss Bowen. I do know you
- 6:00what a beautiful horse is that yours kennel? Yes, Miss Bowen, that's
- 6:02Speed Queen, the winner of the next race. How do you know that,
- 6:05colonel? Because she's ready, you run the legs off every other horse
- 6:09in the race. Better put something down on it. I'll believe a horse
- 6:12is really going to win when I see her trainer putting up some of his
- 6:14own money. Well, you'd see that right now, except that I never
- 6:16allow my employees to build on any race in which we have an envy.
- 6:19That right, Dison, that's right. It's only that rule of yours.
- 6:23It's keeping me from picking up a fortune on this race. I still say
- 6:26I'll believe it when I see it. The end of the race is the
- 6:29time to tell how good Speed Queen really is. Shall we go, Patsy
- 6:31m hmm, right to the bedding window. I want to put two dollars
- 6:35down on Speed Queen. She's too beautiful to lose a race. Sonny Boy
- 6:48filling the lead with nim Rod and Golden Spurs behind. Funny Boy pulling away
- 6:54from Nimrod looks like a strong winner. But you can't tell you a horse
- 6:57tim Rod is getting a good lead on Golden spur well, Petsy, come
- 7:00run, Speed, Queen. There's pretty far back on the bunch. If
- 7:02I can see this straight from here, doesn't mean a thing, you know
- 7:05it, nothing except that you're probably way out two dollars. I am not
- 7:09going to win. She's starting to come out, say she is at that,
- 7:14But now things need to be changing. Speed Queen, who's been hanging
- 7:16in the back of the bunch so far, it's beginning to pull out,
- 7:19passing the other horses. And if they were standing still, sunny boys don't
- 7:23leave with men right flows behind now Speed Queen at third and still growing from
- 7:28almost incredible the way he's running a beat Queen off the ground man when her
- 7:32dogey's mom a wife to get around the leaders are too bad. He's coming
- 7:36out and making neck with Funny Boy and coming down the bread together. There
- 7:40now be Queen pulling ahead. She's got looks very possible. Now, Betsy,
- 7:48he's certainly showing her heels to the rest of them. If you can
- 7:50pass sunny Boy now she may make it. That was awful, Nick.
- 8:07What do you suppose happened to speed Queen's jockey? We may never know,
- 8:09Patsy, he wasn't dead when he fell off his horse. The horse is
- 8:13coming up behind him trampled him to death. Do you suppose he had heart?
- 8:16Maybe and maybe not. When a horse that isn't a favorite suddenly comes
- 8:20up from behind to take the lead away from the favorite, and then something
- 8:22happens that that's the favorite win after all, I'm just naturally a little suspicious
- 8:26high neck. Oh hi, at Tien, do you have anything on this
- 8:30race? Patsy had two dollars on Speed Queen, but he saw what happened,
- 8:33as she must have gotten the same tip I did. The Speed Queen
- 8:37was all set to win, but the big money didn't know it. I
- 8:39was so sure the tip was good that I put one hundred bucks in her
- 8:41nose. Oh here's one ticket I'll never cash you. Wait a minute,
- 8:46Wait a minute. Huh, don't tear up that ticket. You don't want
- 8:48it, Give it to me, will you? Oh you want a superna,
- 8:50Sure you're welcome to it and anything it can collect on it. Thanks.
- 8:54You know, Speed Queen had one that'll be worth fifteen hundred bucks.
- 8:58Now it's just waste paper. Perhaps you're right, Jim, but I have
- 9:01a hunch. Come on, Patsy, let's stroll down to the payoff windows.
- 9:16Well, look who's at one hundred dollars window. Pinky Demes never had
- 9:20over five dollars on a race in his life, Nick, Would you look
- 9:24at the handful of tickets he has. Those are all winners. It must
- 9:26be five or six thousand dollars there easily that much, no question about it,
- 9:31Patsy. Somebody knew something was going to happen to make sunny by the
- 9:35winner, and for the sake of the poor dead jockey and speed Queen.
- 9:37I'm going to find out what it was. It did happen. Wait a
- 9:39minute, I'll be right back, Okay, Pinky, Pinky Demes, huh
- 9:45oh, you got it, and you give a guy that jumps grabbing at
- 9:48him. Don't wait. I didn't think you touts ever believed in your own
- 9:50tip, Spinky, not enough to bet all that money on him. You
- 9:52got me ruined. Connor, I didn't have noth none of this race.
- 9:56It was just hanging around. I only got bust fear back to town.
- 10:01I hold one hundred dollars ticket on speed Queen. I hate to be a
- 10:05sucker. Sucker, Oh yeah, yeah. Jill was tough about the jack
- 10:09falling dead just when he was winning like that. Yeah, lucky for those
- 10:11betting on sunny Boy. Yeah yeah, look, Carter, I gotta go
- 10:16see it. Thirteen to one. The ticket I have is worth thirteen hundred
- 10:18dollars. I'm keeping that ticket. Might be a smart idea for somebody to
- 10:24buy it from me. Huh. I'll be in my office until four o'clock.
- 10:28After four will be too late. I don't know what you're talking about.
- 10:33Just pass the word along. That's all all right, Patty, that's
- 10:37enough racing for one day. Let's get back to the office. I really
- 10:50think you're going to hear from somebody before four o'clock. Is that? Now
- 10:56we have pollers, I'll get it. Yeah, okay, thanks very much.
- 11:03Not a caller. Neaked package package, I tell you, well,
- 11:11what is it? Look? Somebody's e oh, Nick, how horrible.
- 11:18There's a note says Pinky listen too hard. You won't hear you the next
- 11:24time you talk too much if you do so. I was right. It
- 11:28was murder. You mean speed Queen's jockey exactly. Give me the phone,
- 11:35Nick, I don't know you will. Hello, there you go, put
- 11:41Tim Rock on. What are you going to do? Oh? Tim This
- 11:46is Nick Carter works on your mind. Got a hot special for your final
- 11:50edition. Quote me this way. The death of speed Queen's jockey in the
- 11:56third race this afternoon was not accidental. It was murder. An run to
- 12:01just that way and quote me. Then you'll be in the clear. Yes
- 12:05you can. I've never given you a bump stair yet have I? Thanks
- 12:09to him so long i'd understand something. Maybe somebody will try to buy one
- 12:15hundred dollars ticket for me yet, Nick, you can't mean you're trying to
- 12:18blackmail somebody and they paying you fifteen hundred dollars for not investigating. Oh,
- 12:22you know me better than that. I hope somebody will try to pay me
- 12:24the money so I can get a lead on where to look for the jockey's
- 12:26murderer, because it was murder and no mistake. Well, we've never known
- 12:37Nick to be wrong when he finally makes up his mind, But this looks
- 12:39like pretty slim evidence on which to make a charge of murder. Is Nick
- 12:43on the right track or is he sticking his neck out looking for trouble?
- 12:46Can he prove the charge that he's just made, and how will he go
- 12:50about it? We'll see in just a moment. If you're a homemaker,
- 12:54you have every reason to take pride in a home that fairly gleams with the
- 12:58evidence of careful attention, and every wood and linoleum surface in your home wheel
- 13:03gleam when you use Linex Clear Gloss Varnish because Linux Clear Gloss lends a lustrous
- 13:07finish that keeps its beauty a long long time. It lessens your housework amazingly
- 13:13too, for it's so easy to keep clean. Dirt stays on the surface
- 13:16where you can wipe it away in a jiffy, and Linux Clear Gloss is
- 13:20so simple to apply. You just brush it on and it dries without brush
- 13:24marks to an elastic, transparent finish that wears and wears, a finish which
- 13:28protects every surface to which it's applied. Yes, it's a fact. Linux
- 13:33Clear Gloss protects all the wood and linoleum surfaces in your home against damage by
- 13:39boiling water, hot grease, fruit acids, perfume, even alcohol. In
- 13:43every way, it's truly the super varnish. Ask for it by name at
- 13:48your dealers Linux ln X Linx Clear Gloss Varnish you will find all three great
- 13:56Linax Home Brighteners and Kemtne the miracle wall finish at hardware, paint and department
- 14:01stores everywhere. Now back to our story. Nick is convinced that the death
- 14:13of the jockey on Speed Queen was not an accident. In fact, he
- 14:16believes it was deliberate murder. But it's going to be a long, hard
- 14:18road proving it. It's late the same day as we look in on Lieutenant
- 14:22Riley's office at headquarters, just as Nick drops in, how are you,
- 14:26Nick? I haven't seen you around here in dodgy Age. Riley? How
- 14:28many murders does it take to interest you murders? I haven't heard about any
- 14:33murders, but if you tell me where you hit the bodies, I'll be
- 14:35glad you look into it for you. One of the bodies was the jockey
- 14:39in the third race this afternoon. How's your report on him? Unavoidable in
- 14:43the doc says it was a heart attack and the other horses was bunched so
- 14:46close they couldn't get out of his way when he fell off. Better change
- 14:50that to lead poisoning, rally lead poison. You're nuts? Can you prove
- 14:54it? No? Not yet. The docs didn't mention any bullet warns,
- 14:58that's why not? How could he with a jock his head all smashed up?
- 15:01But another thing, a small time tout by the name of Pinky Dems
- 15:03won't be doing any more touting from now on. Why not? He's dead
- 15:07murdered. If you don't believe me, put out a pickup order on him
- 15:09and see if any of your boys can find him. Do you know anything,
- 15:13Nicker? Is this all guess work? Two murders in the last couple
- 15:16of hours, rally, and I may be the third. Yeah, come
- 15:18in, I get it rightly. I'm mad and I want hello Colonel Pemburg
- 15:22or something bothering you? Oh it's you. Yes, you're bothering me.
- 15:26Why do you have to shoot off your big boss of the papers where you
- 15:28Did you approve of murder? Colonel? No? I don't. I don't
- 15:31approve of rumors of murder either. I demand that you retract your accusations or
- 15:35produce some concrete proof to back them up. I didn't accuse you of anything,
- 15:37Colonel. I didn't say you did. It's a reflection on my stable,
- 15:41on the glorious sport of her bread racing. It's really all your fault,
- 15:43you know. My fault. Yes, you recommended Speed Queen so highly
- 15:48that I watched the race much more closely than you you wal and what I
- 15:50saw led me to make the statement you see there in the paper. You
- 15:52will say the death of my jockey was murdered. I do. I say
- 15:56you're a fool. Maybe, but I'm gonna keep on saying it's murder until
- 16:00someone does something about it. But Nick, you you must have something to
- 16:02pack up this claim of yours. I have, but none of it's evidence
- 16:04yet. For one thing, don't forget with Speed Queen out of the way,
- 16:08Sonny Boy won that race at very attractive odds. John Gailey, Sonny
- 16:11Boy's owner, made a sweet out of money on the deal. John gainley'
- 16:15is a crafty old bird, but he wouldn't murder my jockey, A Colonel
- 16:18Pember. Before I go any further with this, I'd like to talk to
- 16:21your trainer, Dyerson. Is it Deerson is no longer my trainer. I
- 16:23fired him a couple of hours ago, fired him. Why you saw the
- 16:26race. You saw the way Speed Queen's jockey pulled white on the turn,
- 16:30failed to take the fence. Probably just missus cue. That's all My trainers
- 16:33are responsible for all such things. I will not tolerate such blood. That's
- 16:37a little thin, Colonel, are you sure you didn't use that as an
- 16:41excuse to get rid of this? You'll see here color. I don't have
- 16:42to, Carmian Caban. I demand that you. Hello, Pembert, are
- 16:49you responsible for this? This stuff in the paper? I am not What
- 16:52makes you think I'd do a thing like that. It sounds like one of
- 16:55your trees entirelym my idea, mister Ganley. Oh what you have two butts
- 17:00on speed Queen's nude? My gripe, mister Gailey, is that a jockey
- 17:04who was supporting his mother and a little sister was killed so somebody could make
- 17:07money. And I don't like things like that. Oh so I have one
- 17:11hundred dollars ticket on speed Queen's Nose That isn't worth anything now, Oh blackmail?
- 17:17I get it just because my horse was a better horse than pember It's
- 17:21you kick when you win. Your horse was beaten to a stamp still when
- 17:23a rifle bullet gave him a chance to win. You think you're staring,
- 17:26mister Ganley. I'm only trying to do one thing. I want to know
- 17:30who kills speed Queen's jockey and why I was there this afternoon. I saw
- 17:34nothing to indicate murder. You men have ever seen a rifle bullet actually at
- 17:38work? But the medical report cost steel jacket. A bullet won't need much
- 17:41evidence of its passage in the skull it smashed a few seconds later by a
- 17:45dozen iron shot hoops. Oh, rally, you gotta have to start on.
- 17:49I don't see where to begin. There's no evidence. Okay, don't
- 17:53blame me if the commissioner gets on the phone and starts asking questions, was
- 17:56Nick Kak come in? Colonel Pembert just a minute? I want to talk
- 18:00lu Cann't rack you come on, Carnor. I want to talk to you
- 18:03anyway privately. Why of course, mister Gailey, I'll be seeing you rally.
- 18:07It's a long. It's a long, colonel. Now, if you're
- 18:21stepping my car with me for a minute, we can talk quietly, all
- 18:25right, But I don't see what you and I have to talk about.
- 18:27It won't take with a minute now, all right, Carter, what's your
- 18:33game? I told you that upstairs. I don't believe you. You're sore
- 18:37because you failed to when you're better on speed, Queen, you don't really
- 18:41care for the jockey who was killed. You're welcome to think anything you'll like,
- 18:45mister Gailey, you think if you talk long enough and loudly enough,
- 18:48somebody's going to pay you to shut up. Go on. Unfortunately for me,
- 18:53your accusation points directly at me, as the owner of the winning horse.
- 18:57I profited by the he's dead, but I certainly didn't murder him.
- 19:03No one has accused you of murder yet, but they will. There'll be
- 19:07fingers pointed at me. There'll be investigations by the racing Commission. How much
- 19:12was the ticket you have on that rage? One hundred dollars? A thirteen
- 19:17two hundred share, thirteen hundred dollars? They are I trust. We understand
- 19:23each other. Now. I understand that you've just given me thirteen hundred dollars,
- 19:30and I also understand that a jockey was killed in cold blood. But
- 19:33Carl, he said we had nothing to talk about, mister Gailey, and
- 19:34I was right. So long. Oh there you are, Nick, Missus
- 19:49pemble its been waiting over an hour to see you. Hello, Missus Pemblett.
- 19:52What's on your mind? Could I speak to you alone. Whatever you
- 19:56can tell me, you can tell Patsy we work together. Well, all
- 20:00right, mister Carter, I know everything. My husband told me this afternoon
- 20:04that you've been spying on me. Yes, Colonel Pembert was in a dreadful
- 20:07temper. He fired Dick, mister Deson, and then told me about having
- 20:11you follow me. So that's why he fired Deerson. Yes, I don't
- 20:17know what came over me. I really loved the colonel, but mister Dearson
- 20:19swept me off my feet. I guess I'm just weak. Why have you
- 20:23come here now? I must know, mister Carter. Have you told the
- 20:27colonel that I pawned my necklace this morning? Why is that important? If
- 20:32the colonel knew that I pawned my pearls and gave the money to Dick to
- 20:34bed on speed Queen, then he must be the one behind the jockey's murder.
- 20:37He wanted to be sure that Dick would lose, because it is one
- 20:41I was planning to run away with him on the winning as we'd make.
- 20:45Are you saying that your husband killed the jockey so you and Deerson couldn't run
- 20:48away together? What must be there? Must love me very much. I
- 20:52thought he didn't care. Did the Colonel tell you I'd been following you,
- 20:56spying on you? We said he'd hired a private detective to report everything I
- 20:59did. Missus Pember, I'm a private detective, but I wouldn't touch one
- 21:03of those divorce investigations if I starved at death. When these things I've told
- 21:10you, you didn't know them, not positively? You give me some valuable
- 21:15information. Thank you. I'd guessed that most of it, but had no
- 21:18confirmation. Nicholas Carter's all this, mister Carter busy? Just now? May
- 21:26I take a message for him? Very well? I'll helen. That was
- 21:32short and sweet? What was it? It was Colonel Pember? Colonel Pember.
- 21:36Yes, he said to tell you, Nick that he was sending you
- 21:37thirteen hundred dollars by messenger. He said you'd know what he meant. So
- 21:41the Colonel's decided that he can't ignore my charges and he wants me to drop
- 21:45them. Doesn't that prove what I just said, Mister Carter, I don't
- 21:49know, does it? He must be behind it? Oh, the poor
- 21:52man. I must go him at once. Better not tell him you were
- 21:56here when his message came. Oh I won't Betsy had been a mutual protective
- 22:04agency. Joe Brown. Okay, maybe it's not blackmail, mate, but
- 22:08it's certainly producing results. Originally I let it be known that I'd lost one
- 22:14hundred dollars on speed Queen, just to see what reaction that stirred up.
- 22:17Wanted to get a lead on the killer. Now the money comes in by
- 22:19itself, well we'll give it to the Red Cross. There's no better use
- 22:23for any money than that. Hello, lister Joe Brown, Please wish I
- 22:27had more to give him? Just a minute, Nick Carter calling, Thanks,
- 22:33Hello, Joe. Have you finished that job for Colonel Pembert yet?
- 22:37And his wife? His wife and Dick Dison? Oh yeah, just delivers
- 22:42the final report. Why if you finished with it, you won't mind giving
- 22:45me a Dierson's address? Will you you move from his old place? Recently?
- 22:48I find and left no forwarding address. Willow Road? You know the
- 22:55Colonel Bouncer just a little while ago. Yes, I know, forty seven
- 22:57East Willow Road. Thanks Joe much for you someday so long. What makes
- 23:02you think Colonel Timber's train is mixed up in his mid How could he get
- 23:04in on it? He has some information I want. That's all. Oh,
- 23:07well, now, so you better drive me out to forty seven East
- 23:11Willow Road and fast, mister dearson, he's left already, any idea where
- 23:23he's gone, no stuff, and went out. Expressman's coming for his stuff
- 23:29in a few minutes. Now he's meeting him at the station. This is
- 23:32stuff here, yes, and three bags and trump mind if I look at
- 23:36them? Suit yourself. That's a new trunk. Yes, the bags look
- 23:42quite new too. I wonder how many tags. Here's a tag on the
- 23:47trunk. William Stewart, seven to eleven Fourth Street, Evansville, Indiana.
- 23:52Yes, a new trunk. And yes, well what is it? Come
- 24:00on, Betsy, let's meet dearson at the station. See this headline?
- 24:11Dearson, huh what? Oh it's you? I said, Have you seen
- 24:18the headlines? Says speed? Queen's jockey was murdered? Who said, so
- 24:23I do? What do you know about it? Practically everything? How come
- 24:27you know so much? I get around and I keep my eyes and ears
- 24:32open. For instance, I know that there's some connection between you and a
- 24:37certain William Stewart of Evansville, Indiana. What are you talking about? The
- 24:42tag on your trunk, your nice new trunk, the trunk with the bloodstains
- 24:48on it. I don't give your hands in side this. You don't,
- 24:52I'll shoot first. That's better. I suppose we forget about taking the train
- 24:59and Carlin at Riley instead. He thinks I'm nuts. But when you tell
- 25:03him what you know, he'll find out I was right all along. Will
- 25:15you get to the point, Carter, You didn't ask us here just to
- 25:18talk about the weather. Very well, now that mister Gain lives here,
- 25:21let's get on with it. You have each paid me thirteen hundred dollars to
- 25:25hush up the investigation into the death of speed Queen's jockey. You thought I
- 25:27was blackmailing you. If you'd known me better, you'd have known I can't
- 25:32be bribed. I took the money and I'm turning it over to the Red
- 25:34Cross. But I kept on looking around, and now I have the whole
- 25:38story. If you've got the answer to this business, you can turn my
- 25:41money over to the Red Cross and welcome, and I'll put as much more
- 25:45with it. And that goes for me. Carter. Now, now what
- 25:48is the story? Repleas this missus Pembert Ponder necklace and gave the three thousand
- 25:52dollars to Dyson the bet on Speed Queen. He thought Dyson was in love
- 25:56with it, but he wasn't. Just wanted the money. So we bet
- 25:59the money and honey Boy to win, and arranged for having Speed Queen's jockey
- 26:03shot at the turn. If Speed Queen took the lead. Pinky Deemes put
- 26:07the bets down for him and collected his winnings. But I saw Pinky do
- 26:11it, and I spoke to him. I told him I should expect some
- 26:14action by four o'clock. Instead of what I expected, I got Pinky's ear
- 26:18as a warning to lay off. And I suppose that when I paid you
- 26:22that thirteen hundred dollars, you thought I was behind it. No, Gainley,
- 26:26I knew that you paid me to keep the scandal out of the papers
- 26:27if possible. You didn't want racing to get a black eye. Yes,
- 26:30that was it. And you, Colonel Pembert, you paid me thirteen hundred
- 26:34dollars to keep your wife from learning what a fool she'd been, didn't you.
- 26:37Yes, I knew she'd made a fool of herself over Deerson, and
- 26:41he wanted to protect her. I love her and she loves you, Colonel,
- 26:45I know that. Can you prove any of this car, not much
- 26:48of it unless Deerson confesses, which I feel sure he'll do. So why
- 26:52should he confess naked? You can't prove anything on him, because there's one
- 26:55thing we can hang on him, fairly and squarely. What's that Pinky's death.
- 27:00If you were to look in the trunk which Dison just bought, you'd
- 27:02find Pinky's body minus one, here being shipped to what is undoubtedly a fake
- 27:06address, never mind new traces of blood on the trunk when I examined it.
- 27:10That alone will take care of our mister Dison, who seems to have
- 27:14double crossed ever when he came in contact with except himself next to me,
- 27:18as if Fate had double crossed him. The way it turns out, quite
- 27:21right, Betsy, Fate is away of double crossing those who don't obey the
- 27:25laws of right and wrong. In just a moment, Nick and Patsy will

- 29:00Well, Nick, would you care to give us a peek in the next
- 29:02week's story he'd be delighted to he's been waiting for just that very question.
- 29:06Thanks for the build up, Patsy. That's a story of an actor,
- 29:10an actor who, for some strange reasons, seemed to be followed by a
- 29:12constant procession of almost fatal accidents. He was hurt several times, but always
- 29:17escaped death. What was it all about? The manager of the theater,
- 29:19A friend of mine called me in to find the answer to that same question,
- 29:22which Nick found, of course, and just in the nick of time,
- 29:26Well what do you call it? Nick? Death behind the Scenes or
- 29:29the Mystery of the Persecuted Actor? Complete details next week, So long,
- 29:33So long everybody, and so long you both, Patsy, Nick, be
- 29:37seeing you next week, same as usual, next week, the same time.
- 29:48Listen to another curious experience of Nick Carter Master Detective entitled Death behind the
- 29:55Scene or Nick Carter and the Mystery of the Persecuted Actor. Nick Carter Master
- 30:07Detective is featured in Street and Smith magazines. Lon Clark is starred as Nick,
- 30:11with Helen Chot as Patsy. Original music is played by Lou White,
- 30:15and the programs are written and directed by Jack McGregor. Nick Carter Master Detective
- 30:22is presented at this time and over these same stations each week by the three
- 30:26great Linux Home Brightness, Linux Clear, Gloss Varnish, Linax Cream Polish,
- 30:32and Linax Self Polishing Wax created by ACME America's great producer of Acme Fine Quality
- 30:38Paints. This is Ken Powell speaking for the thousands of Linux dealers all over
- 30:44America and saying, so long until next week. This is mutual welcome back.
- 31:04Well. A great episode and it really illustrates what I like about Nick
- 31:10Carter. This is Nick Carter at his best. You have a pretty clever
- 31:15mystery, and then you just have Nick continuing to be dairying and audacious,
- 31:22and really this episode illustrates a lot of what's really unique about Nick Carter as
- 31:30a character. Because, probably with the exception of Nero Wolf and Sherlock Holmes,
- 31:37of the characters we've heard on the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio,
- 31:41none of them are particularly famous within the context of their own world. Nick
- 31:47Carter is, and kind of see the power of that with his ability to
- 31:52go to the press in a way that character like Sam Spade couldn't or even
- 31:57Sherlock Holmes probably would not. I'm not saying one way is better than another,
- 32:02but certainly this is a unique perspective In next personality, I just as
- 32:07I listened to the show and I hear the things that he does, I'm
- 32:12just like, Wow, that's an interesting approach, taking the one hundred dollars
- 32:17ticket to try to see what sort of bait he got. I also like
- 32:22the way that the marriage plot was dealt with, and that the way it
- 32:27turned out was a little was quite a bit different from what the vast majority
- 32:31of detective shows do in terms of the view particularly of a straying younger woman
- 32:38married to an older man. A truly enjoyable episode, and of course next
- 32:45week we'll be back with even more Nick Carter Tomorrow join us for another episode
- 32:51of That Man with the Action Packed Expense account. Yours truly, Johnny Doller,
