- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Good morning, I'm Zach Power. The official opposition says that
- 0:08Speaker 2: government has released a graph detailing how the price of
- 0:11Speaker 2: Gull Island Power will decrease over time. But they were
- 0:15Speaker 2: not afforded the appropriate time to ask questions of experts.
- 0:18Speaker 2: The graph shows a price of 17 cents per kilowatt
- 0:22Speaker 2: hour in 2041, and that price gradually decreases over the
- 0:25Speaker 2: next 46 years to 9 cents per kilowatt hour in 2087.
- 0:30Speaker 2: During question period last night, Liberal leader John Hogan stated
- 0:32Speaker 2: that the graph was released late Tuesday night, leaving them
- 0:36Speaker 2: with no time to question J.P. Morgan or power advisory
- 0:39Speaker 2: on it. It shows exactly what we knew.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Quebec is getting more than Newfoundland and Labrador.
- 0:44Speaker 2: So why is the premier hiding this from the public
- 0:46Speaker 2: and not allowing us to ask important questions for Newfoundlanders
- 0:49Speaker 2: and Labradors?
- 0:49Speaker 4: The Honourable Premier. We heard today from J.P. Morgan and
- 0:53Speaker 4: others about the 2% escalation clause. and the fact that
- 0:58Speaker 4: it was not recommended by them to the former government
- 1:03Speaker 4: in the 2024 MOU, that recommendation, the fact that they
- 1:07Speaker 4: included a 2% escalation clause, which would have resulted in
- 1:11Speaker 4: $ 30 billion in balloon payment at the end of the contract. Order, please.
- 1:16Speaker 4: That's been eliminated, Speaker.
- 1:19Speaker 2: NL Health Services says that repairs are underway to address
- 1:22Speaker 2: ongoing problems with the heating system at the Dr. A.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Leonard Miller Center. NLHS says that the Rehabilitation Technology Department,
- 1:30Speaker 2: located on the main floor of the building, is one
- 1:33Speaker 2: of a few areas supplied by what is known as
- 1:35Speaker 2: a closed-loop hydronic system. The health authority says that while
- 1:39Speaker 2: the system is currently working, repairs are ongoing to address
- 1:43Speaker 2: damage caused by a series of leaks in the piping.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Affected areas include seating assessment storage rooms, prosthetic fitting rooms,
- 1:50Speaker 2: and prosthetic casting rooms at an office. NLHS says an
- 1:54Speaker 2: engineering firm has been contracted to review the system. The
- 1:59Speaker 2: price of gasoline is up by just under a cent
- 2:03Speaker 2: per liter. Diesel prices are at about 1.3 cents per
- 2:07Speaker 2: liter on the island, and in parts of Labrador, it's
- 2:11Speaker 2: just under a cent. Meanwhile, furnace oil is up by 1.1
- 2:15Speaker 2: cents on the island, while stove oil in parts of
- 2:17Speaker 2: Labrador is up by less than a cent. The PUB
- 2:20Speaker 2: says that changes are based on the most recent market activity,
- 2:24Speaker 2: and this all comes as a fuel expert says that
- 2:27Speaker 2: the prices of fuel could jump by more than double
- 2:30Speaker 2: of what they were come this time last year.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Diesel's $ 2.
- 2:35Speaker 1: 74, St. John's Furnace Oil $ 2. 17. Look for both of
- 2:41Speaker 1: those to jump between now and the cold days of
- 2:45Speaker 1: winter by about 30 cents a litre. It could be
- 2:48Speaker 1: even higher than that, but I don't know at this point.
- 2:50Speaker 1: But we're dealing with a shock, a supply shock. We
- 2:53Speaker 1: don't have enough to go around. We don't make enough
- 2:55Speaker 1: to go around. And Canada can only produce enough for itself.
- 3:00Speaker 1: And most of what it does is ships out to
- 3:01Speaker 1: the border.
- 3:03Speaker 2: A 32-year-old man has been charged after a frightening incident
- 3:06Speaker 2: in Cornerbrook on Monday afternoon where a business person was
- 3:10Speaker 2: attacked and stabbed near the Valley Mall. VOCM's Linda Swain
- 3:13Speaker 2: has more.
- 3:14Speaker 3: RNC were called around 5.30 and the victim, a 37-year-old man,
- 3:18Speaker 3: was rushed to hospital with serious stab wounds. The suspect
- 3:21Speaker 3: fled on foot before police arrived, but Greg Busacanda was
- 3:24Speaker 3: tracked down and arrested in the Valley Road area around
- 3:27Speaker 3: 7 Monday night. Musakanda appeared in court yesterday on charges
- 3:31Speaker 3: of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm,
- 3:35Speaker 3: possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, disguise with intent,
- 3:39Speaker 3: and break and enter. Victim Doug Payne says he suffered
- 3:41Speaker 3: a number of wounds, including one to his neck, his shoulder,
- 3:44Speaker 3: and his side, but he's recovering. RNC have released an
- 3:48Speaker 3: image of a man who was seen dressed all in
- 3:50Speaker 3: black with his face obscured in hopes of establishing a
- 3:53Speaker 3: timeline of events leading up to the attack. Police are
- 3:56Speaker 3: appealing for any information or video footage of the man
- 3:59Speaker 3: captured in the image. Linda Swain, VOCM, Local News Now.
- 4:03Speaker 2: In international news, a helicopter hovering over the scene of
- 4:07Speaker 2: a fatal bus crash near San Fernando Valley fell from
- 4:11Speaker 2: the sky and burst into flames Tuesday evening. It happened
- 4:14Speaker 2: in the Los Angeles suburb of Chatsworth, where one person
- 4:17Speaker 2: on the ground was killed. First responders arrived to the
- 4:19Speaker 2: helicopter fully engulfed in flames. Additionally, at least two people
- 4:23Speaker 2: were killed in the bus crash. ATC dispatch operators were
- 4:27Speaker 2: coordinating emergency services when the second accident occurred.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Just add that there's a helicopter down over there. I'm sorry,
- 4:34Speaker 3: say that again? There's a helicopter down just outside the airspace.
- 4:41Speaker 2: And finally, more U.S. tariffs are set to take effect
- 4:43Speaker 2: at the end of September as Washington presses its trade
- 4:46Speaker 2: war against Canada. Donald Trump ordered bans on imports of
- 4:49Speaker 2: Canadian-made liquor and a handful of dairy products. That will
- 4:52Speaker 2: take an effect September 29th. On Tuesday, a small number
- 4:56Speaker 2: of Canadian goods were impacted by 50% American tariffs, including
- 5:00Speaker 2: outboard motors and metal and paper products. While the White
- 5:03Speaker 2: House announced 50% tariffs on other goods like cement, sugar,
- 5:06Speaker 2: toilet paper, and fishing rods, they've all since been removed.
- 5:11Speaker 2: And that's your news. I'm Zach Power.
