Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Derek.
- 0:08Speaker 2: All Right, well, if you can believe it, we're at
- 0:11Speaker 2: the end of January. This weekend is like the last
- 0:12Speaker 2: weekend of January, and if you can believe it, it's
- 0:15Speaker 2: Championship Sunday tomorrow and lou Terminello. I am very hyped up.
- 0:21Speaker 2: I want to see the upset in Kansas City. I
- 0:23Speaker 2: want to believe the Commanders being the Eagles wouldn't be
- 0:26Speaker 2: a dramatic upset. Concertain they already had that big win
- 0:30Speaker 2: in Washington. I know this is in Philly, but still
- 0:32Speaker 2: it's gonna be a fun Sunday. It's one of the
- 0:35Speaker 2: more compelling title Sunday's Championship Sundays in a while, Am
- 0:39Speaker 2: I right?
- 0:41Speaker 1: Alex? Thanks for having me back as always, Yes, Sunday
- 0:45Speaker 1: is very compelling. You are correct. I am looking forward
- 0:49Speaker 1: to both of these games, and I think that first
- 0:56Speaker 1: game is going to be pretty interesting. As you see
- 0:58Speaker 1: the great rookie quarterback Jaden Daniels might be able to
- 1:05Speaker 1: pull this off. Let's face it, the Eagles do have
- 1:08Speaker 1: the better roster they you know how how big I
- 1:12Speaker 1: am on having great offensive lines, and the Eagles have
- 1:16Speaker 1: the best offensive line in football, and behind that offensive line,
- 1:20Speaker 1: they have as good a running back as they origin
- 1:22Speaker 1: in the NFL, so they can control the game a
- 1:25Speaker 1: little bit. The thing we all know about the about
- 1:27Speaker 1: the Eagles in this game is is the health of
- 1:30Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts. Yes, he was a full practice participant yesterday
- 1:34Speaker 1: and I'm sure today. But again, that was a pretty
- 1:38Speaker 1: tough fit he took on at me when it got
- 1:41Speaker 1: bent a little bit last week, so we have to
- 1:43Speaker 1: wait and see. I'm really impressed with with what the
- 1:47Speaker 1: Commanders have done, and Terry McLaurin, who's always been underrated,
- 1:52Speaker 1: might finally start to get the recognition that he deserves
- 1:54Speaker 1: as a big time receiver. One of the things I
- 1:57Speaker 1: think that that the command is going to have to
- 2:00Speaker 1: do is they're going to have to make sure that
- 2:03Speaker 1: they don't do what the Rams did last week when
- 2:05Speaker 1: they allowed Barkley to turn that corner. You almost have
- 2:09Speaker 1: to have a spy on him, just like if he
- 2:11Speaker 1: was a running quarterback, which, of course Daniels.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Is, I agree with you. I mean, I thought the
- 2:17Speaker 2: Rams eventually contained Barkley, but it was too late because
- 2:21Speaker 2: he did his magic. And you know what I'm just
- 2:24Speaker 2: gonna say here, Lou I'm still happy for the guy.
- 2:26Speaker 2: I know Giant fans wanted to be miserable. I'm happy
- 2:29Speaker 2: for the guy. He found a place that's a great
- 2:31Speaker 2: offensive line. And if the Giant fans think it's sa
- 2:35Speaker 2: Quan's fault he left, you know, they don't want to
- 2:37Speaker 2: look at the front line that he had, which really
- 2:39Speaker 2: did not protect him like the Eagles. So I like
- 2:42Speaker 2: seeing what he could actually be in even though it's
- 2:44Speaker 2: in the Eagles uniform. I'm happy for him, I really am.
- 2:47Speaker 1: No, And you're right, obviously it's he's not a trader
- 2:50Speaker 1: or anything. The Giants didn't sign him, and he would
- 2:53Speaker 1: not have had the success behind the Giant line or
- 2:57Speaker 1: in the Giant situation. But and you're right, he was
- 3:03Speaker 1: held in check. With the exception of those two long runs.
- 3:06Speaker 1: He had like twenty seven carries twenty six carries for
- 3:08Speaker 1: about seventy five yards, so they did a good job
- 3:11Speaker 1: on him. But you have to make sure he doesn't
- 3:14Speaker 1: have that one home run run and he's and against
- 3:18Speaker 1: the Rams in the two games he had four, So
- 3:22Speaker 1: I'm sure that's a focus of the Commander's defensive scheme
- 3:27Speaker 1: going into a Sunday's game. But it's an interesting game.
- 3:33Speaker 1: I would like to see the Commanders win. I think
- 3:37Speaker 1: it's gonna be a tough task.
- 3:38Speaker 2: I didn't they have momentum going into it. I mean
- 3:41Speaker 2: they really do.
- 3:42Speaker 1: They do have momentum going and it's gonna be hard.
- 3:49Speaker 1: They're gonna be in Philly. They can't turn the ball over,
- 3:53Speaker 1: and we'll see. I mean, I give them more than
- 3:58Speaker 1: a puncher's chance the Commanders on Sunday. But just think
- 4:04Speaker 1: a couple of weeks ago, if Tampa Bay didn't mess
- 4:08Speaker 1: up a couple of handoffs, Washington would have been out
- 4:12Speaker 1: in the first round in all likelihood. So you don't
- 4:14Speaker 1: know in these games. But it's Game one is gonna
- 4:17Speaker 1: be very, very compelling. Of course, Game two is going
- 4:20Speaker 1: to be very compelling again. Kansas City is at home
- 4:24Speaker 1: for a championship game in the Conference against Buffalo. Buffalo
- 4:30Speaker 1: has had a fantastic year again and they're led by
- 4:34Speaker 1: a fantastic player in Josh Allen. But they're going against
- 4:39Speaker 1: the Chiefs. They're going against the great Andy Reid, the
- 4:45Speaker 1: great defensive coordinator, Steve Spagnolo, the great quarterback, the great
- 4:50Speaker 1: tight end in Travis Kelce, the great edge rusher, in
- 4:55Speaker 1: Chris Jones, who is a few Hall of Famer I
- 5:01Speaker 1: mean all all, all four of those five of those guys,
- 5:05Speaker 1: and I don't know if they've never put a coordinator
- 5:07Speaker 1: in the Hall of Fame, but spac Nola's getting close
- 5:09Speaker 1: to that. So, uh, I think it's going to be
- 5:14Speaker 1: really hot for Buffalo to win. I'm rooting for Buffalo,
- 5:18Speaker 1: but well, you.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Know what, there are really only two places that want
- 5:21Speaker 2: the Chiefs and Eagles, and that would be Philadelphia Kansas City.
- 5:24Speaker 2: I feel like everybody else wants. I want to see
- 5:26Speaker 2: Commander's bills.
- 5:28Speaker 1: I actually agree, I agree with.
- 5:30Speaker 2: You, which I didn't think was a possibility. When I
- 5:32Speaker 2: first heard that scenario floated out there, I said, well,
- 5:37Speaker 2: Commanders are are good, but I didn't think they were
- 5:41Speaker 2: Super Bowl ready yet. I thought the Lions were going
- 5:43Speaker 2: to be there, right and then sure enough, here they
- 5:47Speaker 2: are a step away. And then on the other side,
- 5:49Speaker 2: of course, bills. You that's a that's a hope, that's
- 5:52Speaker 2: a prayer that they can beat kans City. And uh,
- 5:55Speaker 2: you know, once again, Mahome's going to show up and
- 5:59Speaker 2: maybe I'm gonna have to eat crow on Monday. When
- 6:01Speaker 2: I kept saying, well, they're not sturdy enough. They haven't
- 6:04Speaker 2: enough sturdy wins. Well, they've really sharpened their tools over
- 6:08Speaker 2: the last few weeks to get here, haven't they.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Well. Yes, and as you noticed, as the season has
- 6:16Speaker 1: gone on, the famed Mahomes to Kelsey connection has become
- 6:23Speaker 1: more and more effective. And that's not by a coincidence.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I mean, these are two Hall of Fame players that
- 6:34Speaker 1: have Hall of Fame chemistry between each other. I'm not
- 6:39Speaker 1: going against the champs again until they lose. I just can't.
- 6:44Speaker 1: I mean, Andy Reid is a better coach than McDermott.
- 6:49Speaker 1: The one thing about looking at last week's game against Baltimore,
- 6:53Speaker 1: they had a twenty one at ten lead at home
- 6:54Speaker 1: in the second half. And I'm not saying that this
- 6:57Speaker 1: is wrong strategy, but they McDermott played not to lose.
- 7:04Speaker 1: He really rained in this amazing quarterback that he has,
- 7:10Speaker 1: from taking any chances, from really throwing the ball in
- 7:14Speaker 1: any type of a high pressure situation. They were all
- 7:19Speaker 1: swings and short passes.
- 7:21Speaker 2: And Lamar almost took advantage of it. I mean, they
- 7:23Speaker 2: were just a two point conversion away from tying that game.
- 7:26Speaker 2: And by the way, Lamar Jackson is going to be
- 7:29Speaker 2: in the title game. You know, he will be vying
- 7:32Speaker 2: for Super Bowl one day. I really think so. I
- 7:35Speaker 2: do believe that. But the Bills did. I don't want
- 7:38Speaker 2: to say just enough because I just said. They got
- 7:40Speaker 2: to a twenty one to ten lead. And I love
- 7:42Speaker 2: watching him, him being Allen run to the end zone.
- 7:45Speaker 2: It's just amazing to watch him, the way he just
- 7:47Speaker 2: finds a way to the end zone almost every time
- 7:49Speaker 2: down there. They really lean on him a lot for that,
- 7:53Speaker 2: don't they.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Well, look a look at him, Look how big he is,
- 7:57Speaker 1: and look how strong he is, and look how fast
- 7:59Speaker 1: he is. And the point he still.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Does it with some kind of finesse. I can't explain it.
- 8:04Speaker 2: He does it with a finesse that it is so
- 8:06Speaker 2: remarkable to watch, you know, in the game.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Again. I would like to see Buffalo win, I really would.
- 8:15Speaker 1: I'm rooting for them, But if, as the old saying goes,
- 8:21Speaker 1: life on the line, I can't go against Mahomes with
- 8:25Speaker 1: my heart. I'm rooting for Buffalo with my head, I'm
- 8:29Speaker 1: saying Kansas City until they lose.
- 8:31Speaker 2: You know, the other thing I was going to say
- 8:32Speaker 2: about that is, remember last year they had the change
- 8:35Speaker 2: at home buffaloed the change at home and couldn't do it.
- 8:38Speaker 2: And I've often equated this matchup to the Yankees and
- 8:41Speaker 2: Astros in the ALCS, because the Astros have the Yanks
- 8:44Speaker 2: number every time. Of course, this was a year was different.
- 8:47Speaker 2: But the point being is, like the Yankees need to
- 8:53Speaker 2: get over the hump of the Astros in the ALCS,
- 8:57Speaker 2: the Bills need to get over this hump to truly
- 9:01Speaker 2: be moving forward. I mean, obviously they'll continue their greatness,
- 9:04Speaker 2: but I just don't want to see I would like
- 9:08Speaker 2: to see the Bills.
- 9:11Speaker 1: I would like to see the Bills. I'm chiefed out
- 9:14Speaker 1: as like, like you said, as everybody except Chief fans
- 9:18Speaker 1: or people in Kansas City are you know.
- 9:23Speaker 2: The other thing about this is we're talking about prime
- 9:25Speaker 2: right now, and Mahomes has made the best of his prime.
- 9:28Speaker 2: He's had the great coaching during his prime. He's had
- 9:31Speaker 2: a great defense because of court of coordinator Spagnolo, who
- 9:34Speaker 2: truly is a defensive coordinator hall of famer. He is
- 9:38Speaker 2: a Hall of Famer, no doubt. But I'm looking at
- 9:42Speaker 2: the league and I just feel kind of is it weirds?
- 9:46Speaker 2: I feel bad that the primes of Trevor Lawrence and
- 9:49Speaker 2: Burrow and Allen are sort of not being moved to
- 9:52Speaker 2: the next level. I don't know what it is. I
- 9:55Speaker 2: don't know why, And of course I'm really I mean,
- 9:58Speaker 2: the Jaguars found their new head coach, but here's a guy,
- 10:01Speaker 2: Tremor Lawrence who really isn't his prime and they're wasting
- 10:04Speaker 2: it in Jacksonville. And I feel like they're wasting the
- 10:07Speaker 2: Vincinci because just they haven't you know, they got in
- 10:12Speaker 2: the Zuper Bowl with him, but they haven't gotten that
- 10:14Speaker 2: next level. How do we get these guys in their
- 10:16Speaker 2: prime in the next level to mahomes stature if.
- 10:18Speaker 1: You will, well again, you said it with Spagnolo and
- 10:23Speaker 1: the defensive players that they have on that team. That's
- 10:27Speaker 1: if Mahomes had the Chiefs defense, Excuse me, if Mahomes
- 10:32Speaker 1: had the Bengals defense, he will have been winning an
- 10:35Speaker 1: these Super Bowls. But Burrow is so good and I'm
- 10:39Speaker 1: not saying that Barrow is a bad than Mahomes. I
- 10:41Speaker 1: am not. Burrow covers up the other deficiencies on the
- 10:48Speaker 1: Cincinnati Bengals's and that's why he's so great. Allen has
- 10:53Speaker 1: done that also because the Buffalo defense is nowhere near
- 10:59Speaker 1: as good personnel wise as the chief defense. So again,
- 11:05Speaker 1: as great as you are, you still need to help
- 11:08Speaker 1: around you, and Mahomes has since he's been there, has
- 11:12Speaker 1: had the help around him. Again, this is not to
- 11:15Speaker 1: knock Mahomes. He's fantastic. He's the best player in the league.
- 11:21Speaker 1: But you guys have the guys around you, you really do.
- 11:24Speaker 1: He has. He has Harrison Bucker, I mean, a fantastic kicker,
- 11:30Speaker 1: you know.
- 11:31Speaker 2: He He's got also leadership at the top that assures
- 11:35Speaker 2: he has all of these tools and weapons. I mean,
- 11:38Speaker 2: is it possible that the leadership at these other teams
- 11:42Speaker 2: are not have not equipped their guys in the.
- 11:48Speaker 1: You are you are correct? You are correct? I mean, Zach, we're.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Going to be banned from Cincinnati and Buffalo for calling
- 11:56Speaker 2: out their ownership right now. That's great, but we may
- 11:58Speaker 2: not be able to go to a game now because
- 11:59Speaker 2: we're calling them.
- 12:00Speaker 1: I'm not calling out their ownership because it's more it's
- 12:02Speaker 1: not you know, it's easy to blame it's easy to
- 12:04Speaker 1: blame owners. It seems that owners of football teams get
- 12:08Speaker 1: get pegged when they're when teams aren't successful, more than
- 12:12Speaker 1: any other sport. Obviously, uh I can't. I can't put
- 12:20Speaker 1: the blame on Buffalo ownership with the Poulas, They've done
- 12:24Speaker 1: everything they've can to make sure that that that the
- 12:27Speaker 1: team stays a contender. Yes, the Brown family, I know,
- 12:31Speaker 1: Mike Brown, son of Paul Brown, the great Paul Brown.
- 12:34Speaker 1: They say it's a little frugal to say the least
- 12:37Speaker 1: on spending, but again he gave a Borough a fantastically
- 12:41Speaker 1: huge contract. And again, Zach Taylor is not is not
- 12:46Speaker 1: Andy Reid and uh Spagnolo has so much more to
- 12:51Speaker 1: work with in Kansas City than than the guys in
- 12:56Speaker 1: cincinnatioin Cincinnati, and Cincinnati fired their defensive courinator at the
- 13:00Speaker 1: end of the year. So sometimes it all just it's
- 13:04Speaker 1: a perfect storm positively as much as negatively. And for
- 13:10Speaker 1: the Chiefs, the perfect storm just clicked.
- 13:12Speaker 2: In speaking a perfect storm, I want to talk about coaching,
- 13:15Speaker 2: and I think this is a because we got to
- 13:18Speaker 2: go about the Lions. You know, coordinators leaving left and
- 13:22Speaker 2: right for coaching jobs elsewhere. That's a sign that Dan
- 13:25Speaker 2: Campbell could be one day a Super Bowl coach, you know, again,
- 13:31Speaker 2: with the right team around him. I mean, it seems
- 13:33Speaker 2: like he's mentored all these people to the point where
- 13:35Speaker 2: they feel like they can go out on their own.
- 13:37Speaker 1: And what do you think, Well, that's true, and that's
- 13:41Speaker 1: going to hurt Detroit next year. Losing coordinators that were
- 13:45Speaker 1: as highly regarded as Ben Jonson and Aaron Glenn.
- 13:51Speaker 2: It's like when you watched as a Jet. I'm sure
- 13:53Speaker 2: you watched him interception, you know all those plays he
- 13:56Speaker 2: had a cornerback.
- 13:57Speaker 1: If I'm not mistaken, Yes, I I saw him play
- 14:00Speaker 1: every Jet game of his career and he was a
- 14:04Speaker 1: terrific player. He was undersized at five foot nine, but
- 14:07Speaker 1: he always battled. And But before we talk about Glenn's
- 14:13Speaker 1: effect on the Jets, I think, like I said, it's
- 14:16Speaker 1: gonna affect Losing these coaches is going is going to
- 14:19Speaker 1: affect the Lions. They're gonna have a new offensive coordinator,
- 14:24Speaker 1: They're gonna have a new defensive coordinator. If Ben Johnson
- 14:27Speaker 1: taking any of the arrest of the Lion's staff with him,
- 14:31Speaker 1: is Aaron Glenn taking any other coaches with him to
- 14:34Speaker 1: the Jets? I guess we might find out on Monday
- 14:37Speaker 1: when Aaron Glenn has his first press conference with the Jets.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Aaron Glenn got the biggest endorsement for me as being
- 14:50Speaker 1: coach of Jets when Bill Parcells raved a ball him.
- 14:54Speaker 1: If if Parcells didn't believe that he's ready, Aaron glenn
- 14:59Speaker 1: is ready, he wouldn't have said it because Parcells doesn't
- 15:02Speaker 1: mess around. He's old school.
- 15:04Speaker 2: He also hasn't weighed in on a coaching change like
- 15:06Speaker 2: that in my light. You know, in my recollection, I
- 15:09Speaker 2: remember him commenting like that, especially when Sala was hired.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Maybe do with Rex Ryan, but I don't remember him
- 15:15Speaker 2: weighing in like he did with Aaron Glennen.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Well, I wouldn't be surprised because I know that even
- 15:21Speaker 1: though Parcels hasn't been a member of the Jets organization
- 15:24Speaker 1: for twenty years, I wouldn't be surprised if they called
- 15:30Speaker 1: him to ask him, what do you think. I still
- 15:36Speaker 1: think there's a connection there between the Jets and Parcels
- 15:40Speaker 1: on a lot of things. So that wouldn't surprise me.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Nobody's told me that, but just looking at past timelines,
- 15:49Speaker 1: I wouldn't. I wouldn't be surprised. We'll see they saves
- 15:53Speaker 1: a great leader of men, and somebody has to get
- 15:54Speaker 1: in there, into that locker room and just say, hey,
- 15:59Speaker 1: this is the way we're doing it. You got to
- 16:01Speaker 1: run through the wall for the logo and remember the look.
- 16:04Speaker 2: As get off social media a lot of.
- 16:07Speaker 1: These Jets on the front is more important than the name.
- 16:10Speaker 2: On the back, and get off social media. A lot
- 16:13Speaker 2: of these Jet players are a few of them and
- 16:14Speaker 2: made a lot of controversy on social media, which I
- 16:17Speaker 2: don't you know, you're a player in the NFL. Why
- 16:19Speaker 2: are you making dumb comments even going after fans? It
- 16:25Speaker 2: just it doesn't make sense. They need to be limited. Yeah,
- 16:30Speaker 2: there's a freedom of speech, but you're an NFL are
- 16:32Speaker 2: going after a fan? I don't, I don't, I don't know.
- 16:34Speaker 1: It just well you see you see that throughout sports,
- 16:37Speaker 1: and you're right, what what good is that going to do? You?
- 16:41Speaker 1: So he's gonna take over the locker room? The only
- 16:44Speaker 1: thing in here here is the Jet defense the last
- 16:48Speaker 1: three years up until the time that they fired sala
- 16:52Speaker 1: after after Game five. The last three years is way
- 16:56Speaker 1: better statistically than Aaron Glenn's Detroit Lion defense, not even close.
- 17:03Speaker 1: But that doesn't mean anything. I think that Jets hired
- 17:06Speaker 1: Allen as he said, I'm not going to be a
- 17:08Speaker 1: defensive coach. I'm going to be a coach, and that's
- 17:11Speaker 1: why I think they hired They hired Aaron Glenn. So
- 17:17Speaker 1: we'll see, I mean, we'll see coordinators that you're going
- 17:20Speaker 1: to bring in are important. I hope he's not calling
- 17:24Speaker 1: the defensive plays. If he's a coach, he has to
- 17:27Speaker 1: coach the whole team. So we'll see who he brings
- 17:30Speaker 1: in as defensive coordinator. We'll see who he brings in
- 17:32Speaker 1: as offensive coordinator, and the other there's a lot of
- 17:35Speaker 1: positions now, I mean the Oakland as believe on I
- 17:38Speaker 1: had thirty three assistant coaches Alex when I started watching
- 17:41Speaker 1: football in the sixties, teams had six or seven. And
- 17:48Speaker 1: the other position for the Jets that I think is
- 17:50Speaker 1: very important as far as a coach goes offensive line
- 17:54Speaker 1: coach very important.
- 17:57Speaker 2: So because you have you have, you have a guy
- 17:59Speaker 2: in Hall that is so talented. Just give him a
- 18:02Speaker 2: little space and we see what he can do with it.
- 18:04Speaker 2: He can run forty fifty sixty yards to the house.
- 18:07Speaker 1: I mean, that's no question. You got to get him
- 18:10Speaker 1: in space.
- 18:11Speaker 2: All right?
- 18:11Speaker 1: Correct?
- 18:12Speaker 2: Now, one last thing on NFL, because there is one
- 18:15Speaker 2: thing I want to ask you before we you know,
- 18:18Speaker 2: before we wrap up today, but before we get to that.
- 18:23Speaker 2: I think announcers are tired of the Mahomes narrative. They're
- 18:27Speaker 2: chief out too, because apparently Aikman and buck went after
- 18:31Speaker 2: Mahomes trying to fall for a flag, and I think
- 18:35Speaker 2: that was very interesting they were speaking out about it.
- 18:36Speaker 2: But it's true. He now thinks he can get every
- 18:39Speaker 2: flag possible. That's bad. That is just not good for
- 18:43Speaker 2: the sport of your league. Guy things he can get
- 18:45Speaker 2: calls his way every time, right.
- 18:48Speaker 1: I agree, And I have to give Troy Aikman a
- 18:53Speaker 1: lot of credit for speaking out on that broadcast last weekend.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Joe Buckan and Troy Aikman and I think we used
- 19:01Speaker 1: to talk about this before. Off absolutely the finest uh
- 19:06Speaker 1: number one in the playoffs.
- 19:07Speaker 2: It feels like yesteryear because they were there every Sunday,
- 19:11Speaker 2: every Sunday of the playoff. Now, even though they're on
- 19:13Speaker 2: the ESPN, they're still involved, and that gives me a
- 19:16Speaker 2: little bit of a throwback feel, you know.
- 19:19Speaker 1: Yeah, And I mean, uh, he was right. That was
- 19:22Speaker 1: a terrible call against against the Texans when he went
- 19:27Speaker 1: into his slide. I mean, the two Texan defenders hit
- 19:31Speaker 1: each other and he barely barely hit my Homes, the
- 19:34Speaker 1: one in the first the one in the first quarter
- 19:36Speaker 1: which led to a chief field goal. I don't I
- 19:38Speaker 1: don't think that was roughing the passer. I think on
- 19:42Speaker 1: the golf got hit the same way in the game
- 19:45Speaker 1: that night, and nothing was called. Golf got hitting the
- 19:48Speaker 1: head on that interception return for a touchdown, which should
- 19:52Speaker 1: have been penalty against the Lions, against the Commanders, excuse me.
- 19:58Speaker 1: And that instead of being a pick six, that should
- 20:00Speaker 1: have been moved back to the twenty five or twenty
- 20:02Speaker 1: eight yard line. And maybe they don't score, maybe they
- 20:05Speaker 1: just score a field goal, or maybe they turn it over.
- 20:08Speaker 1: So and that and that flopping's gotta go. That's that's
- 20:14Speaker 1: that's European soccer, that's South American soccer. When these guys
- 20:19Speaker 1: go flopping left and right. I really believe they only
- 20:25Speaker 1: use video assists on one or two things. It's not
- 20:27Speaker 1: on every play. I think video assists has to be
- 20:30Speaker 1: used on every play. I think video assists should have
- 20:33Speaker 1: called down and said, hey, Mahomes didn't get hit that
- 20:37Speaker 1: pick up the flag so that I really they gotta
- 20:42Speaker 1: use video assists in my opinion, because it's quick. It's
- 20:46Speaker 1: quicker than a conventional replay review. I think they gotta
- 20:52Speaker 1: expand video assist to just about anything they see on
- 20:55Speaker 1: a field. Because the Texans got that hurt. The Texans
- 20:59Speaker 1: who are in that game, they were in that game,
- 21:01Speaker 1: alex So.
- 21:03Speaker 2: So they really were. They got a bit hosed, And
- 21:06Speaker 2: I agree with you there. Now. The other grid Iron
- 21:11Speaker 2: activity that happened this week was obviously the Natty. And
- 21:15Speaker 2: you know, I wasn't able to watch the game, believe
- 21:18Speaker 2: or not in the first half because I was commuting.
- 21:20Speaker 2: But I kept seeing the score and I said, you know,
- 21:23Speaker 2: twenty eight se how is how is Notre Dame allowing
- 21:28Speaker 2: Ohio State to run through them like slice bread? But
- 21:30Speaker 2: then I remember in the first half of Penn State
- 21:33Speaker 2: they let them nitny Lyons do the same thing. I mean,
- 21:36Speaker 2: they were not defensively sharp in that first half. I
- 21:40Speaker 2: guess Ohio they was able to capitalize on it just
- 21:42Speaker 2: a little bit more than Penn State. But it was
- 21:45Speaker 2: a fun game and I like seeing them come back.
- 21:47Speaker 2: I thought that or was gonna happen. You don't understand, Lou.
- 21:50Speaker 2: I'm sitting there saying, all right, Lou, make that or
- 21:53Speaker 2: work missed that field goal opportunity with twenty six seconds left.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Please please edit to you know they knock it through
- 22:00Speaker 2: Will Howard, what do you think? Is he a nfler? Now?
- 22:04Speaker 2: Is he going to be looked at as well?
- 22:06Speaker 1: He'll be looked at Alex to be sure. And he
- 22:10Speaker 1: won't be a first day a first round pick. He
- 22:13Speaker 1: might not even be a second day pick. But he'll
- 22:16Speaker 1: he'll be drafted and who knows. All I know is
- 22:20Speaker 1: he had a very spotty regular season, very spotty, but
- 22:24Speaker 1: he had four magnificent playoff games. And we talked about
- 22:29Speaker 1: this last week. No Dam had to win the time
- 22:31Speaker 1: of possession by seven or eight minutes to win the game. Well,
- 22:34Speaker 1: they get the ball first, and they control the ball
- 22:36Speaker 1: for nine minutes and forty five seconds and they end
- 22:39Speaker 1: up scoring a touchdown. I said, okay, that's great, and
- 22:43Speaker 1: I hey, truth be told. I want to see Notre
- 22:46Speaker 1: Dame win. And but then after that, they had like
- 22:50Speaker 1: four or five three an ounce in a row, and
- 22:51Speaker 1: before they were able to muster anything offensively, they were
- 22:55Speaker 1: down thirty one to seven. A couple of things that
- 22:59Speaker 1: I will have done. I would not have done that
- 23:02Speaker 1: fake that fake punt. Everybody knew it was a fake punt.
- 23:05Speaker 1: I did watching it because another Dame has done that.
- 23:08Speaker 1: If you're going to go for it that deepens in
- 23:10Speaker 1: your territory, you should have just might have gone for
- 23:13Speaker 1: it the conventional way. So, I mean, that was just
- 23:17Speaker 1: one thing that I wouldn't have done. And so No.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Dame had a spectacular year. They're not going anywhere. They're
- 23:24Speaker 1: going to be a contender for the championship agin next year.
- 23:28Speaker 1: And Marcus Fema has done a tremendous job of getting
- 23:32Speaker 1: that team to a championship level, changing changing the perception
- 23:37Speaker 1: that No. Dame can't really be a big time contender anymore.
- 23:41Speaker 1: And Ryan Day got his championship. They had the best
- 23:45Speaker 1: roster they had. They have NFL wide receivers, they have
- 23:49Speaker 1: NFL running backs, their defense is terrific, and they won
- 23:55Speaker 1: the championship. Alex, there's a chance, though, if this wasn't
- 23:58Speaker 1: a twelve team playoff this show year and was like
- 24:01Speaker 1: last year, four, Ohio State probably wouldn't have been in
- 24:04Speaker 1: one of those four. Look at it that way they were,
- 24:09Speaker 1: they probably wouldn't have made it.
- 24:12Speaker 2: They did not have the strongest year. I mean, let's let's.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Well, I mean they lost to Oregon. They lost to
- 24:17Speaker 1: Oregon by a couple right at the end, and they
- 24:20Speaker 1: lost to Michigan up you know, nineteen poet favorites to
- 24:25Speaker 1: a Michigan team that they should have buried, and they didn't.
- 24:28Speaker 1: But they wouldn't. I don't think they would have been
- 24:30Speaker 1: one of the four if it was only fourteen playoffs.
- 24:34Speaker 1: So they benefited from the twelve team playoff and real
- 24:37Speaker 1: quickly I would say it was a success that expanded playoff.
- 24:41Speaker 1: I still think it should be eight teams instead of
- 24:45Speaker 1: twelve if it expanded in all likelihood in twenty twenty
- 24:47Speaker 1: six to fourteen or maybe even sixteen. I don't really
- 24:51Speaker 1: like that. But was this a success? Did it keep
- 24:54Speaker 1: our interests? It did? So I think that it was
- 24:58Speaker 1: a success.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Riley Leonard's faith, man, I love that he preaches in Ohio.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Say too, But I love when they preach about the
- 25:07Speaker 2: Good Lord. That means that is a such a fabric
- 25:09Speaker 2: of football that people don't appreciate enough. I appreciate it
- 25:13Speaker 2: because just you know what I mean, It just means
- 25:16Speaker 2: they they they believe, And I love that on either
- 25:19Speaker 2: side of the football.
- 25:20Speaker 1: No, I mean I I agree, I agree with you.
- 25:22Speaker 1: So it was a good football season. I think that
- 25:26Speaker 1: that everybody has to be happy with the college football season.
- 25:29Speaker 2: And uh, look, even Irish fans, even though I was
- 25:32Speaker 2: disappointed mon Tuesday, I said, they're going to be back here.
- 25:35Speaker 2: It could be a rematch, you know, in the title
- 25:38Speaker 2: game between these two. It's that competitive and.
- 25:41Speaker 1: That no it is and you know, we'll see what happens. Ironically,
- 25:48Speaker 1: Ohio State, who beat Texas. They open up against each
- 25:53Speaker 1: other either Labor Day weekend or whatever that I don't
- 25:57Speaker 1: know how to count the falls, but that on that
- 26:00Speaker 1: every day weekend, that that opening uh that opening week,
- 26:03Speaker 1: I think I think they play. I don't think they
- 26:05Speaker 1: play on neutral side. I think they playing in Columbus.
- 26:08Speaker 1: But they opened up with the season against each other
- 26:11Speaker 1: next year, so so we'll.
- 26:14Speaker 2: Say it'd be fun, all right. I gotta get to this.
- 26:18Speaker 2: You know a lot of people in media and in
- 26:20Speaker 2: the journalism world and in the you know, sports world.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Do you know the one writer who didn't write Eachio
- 26:25Speaker 2: in Did you track him down for us a little?
- 26:27Speaker 2: Or you haven't gotten there. You haven't found that out yet,
- 26:30Speaker 2: have you.
- 26:30Speaker 1: I haven't found that out yet. I don't understand. Again,
- 26:35Speaker 1: I don't understand over the history of major League Baseball's
- 26:41Speaker 1: Hall of Fame. And I know the rules in the
- 26:45Speaker 1: voting system might have been a little bit different, but
- 26:47Speaker 1: just think Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth didn't get one hundred
- 26:52Speaker 1: percent of the vote. We can go right down the lawn.
- 26:56Speaker 2: And wasn't Mariano the first? Or am I wrong?
- 26:58Speaker 1: No? Mariano was the first and he should have gotten
- 27:01Speaker 1: alle hundred percent. But Alex, there's about one hundred players
- 27:04Speaker 1: who should have gotten all one hundred percent. So yeah,
- 27:08Speaker 1: but the guy who didn't vote for intro, what's his deal?
- 27:12Speaker 1: The guy or the female reporter, whoever it might be,
- 27:15Speaker 1: we don't know who it was. Uh, you know, I would.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Show up to dinner because I know each year extended
- 27:22Speaker 2: the invitation to dinner.
- 27:24Speaker 1: I love that he did. I would like to be
- 27:26Speaker 1: on that conversation if he talks to that person who voted, because.
- 27:32Speaker 2: We don't talked to his guy. I remember Jeter confronted
- 27:35Speaker 2: the guy who did not vote for him, if I'm
- 27:36Speaker 2: not mistaken, So yeah, it has happened. And I know
- 27:40Speaker 2: people in New York were up in arms when Jeter
- 27:43Speaker 2: was not unanimous and that, but he's in.
- 27:45Speaker 1: He's in, so it doesn't matter. To three people in
- 27:48Speaker 1: vote for Tom sever Tom sever should have been unanimous.
- 27:51Speaker 1: Like I said, it's about one hundred and twenty five
- 27:54Speaker 1: people who should have gotten one hundred percent of the vote.
- 27:56Speaker 2: But let's let's go to this see and I believe
- 27:58Speaker 2: he turo is. I think see see you know the time.
- 28:02Speaker 2: I mean I, if you asked me in two thousand nine,
- 28:06Speaker 2: was in Hall of Famer. I don't know either way.
- 28:09Speaker 2: After he won the World Series, I think that since
- 28:11Speaker 2: she's Hall of Famer credentials for sure. But I feel
- 28:17Speaker 2: like a lot of these classes are overcompensating for the
- 28:21Speaker 2: fact they don't want to vote in the a Rods
- 28:23Speaker 2: and the Maguires. That's what I'm feeling like as we
- 28:26Speaker 2: go the year, year after year with this.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Now, well you make it. That's a very good point.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Now getting to CC Sabbathia, I never thought of him
- 28:35Speaker 1: as a Hall of Famer. I never did. I didn't
- 28:37Speaker 1: think of Billy Wagner as a Hall of Famer. But
- 28:42Speaker 1: they were voted in, and that's the way it is.
- 28:47Speaker 1: I didn't think Scott Rohlan was a Hall of Famer.
- 28:50Speaker 1: I didn't think Harold Bangs was a Hall of Famer,
- 28:52Speaker 1: and he definitely is not. So I don't understand some
- 28:55Speaker 1: of these guys who get in. Some of these guys
- 28:57Speaker 1: who don't get it. Apparently Carlos Beltran, who is me
- 29:04Speaker 1: a borderline Hall of Famer, looks like he's going to
- 29:07Speaker 1: get in next year. He missed by nineteen votes, and
- 29:10Speaker 1: he was a great player. But there's great and there's
- 29:13Speaker 1: Hall of Fame great. So I think there's a lot
- 29:17Speaker 1: of guys. And again, I'm a tough voter, so I
- 29:19Speaker 1: would I'm I'm really you know, so I might be
- 29:24Speaker 1: a real tough voter compared to to some other people.
- 29:28Speaker 1: So you know, we'll see. Unfortunately, I don't have a vote.
- 29:31Speaker 1: I would love to, but I don't have a vote.
- 29:33Speaker 2: But just as oh look, I'm happy that then CC's
- 29:37Speaker 2: repping the Yankees in the Hall of Fame. It's another
- 29:39Speaker 2: Yankee Hall of Famer.
- 29:40Speaker 1: And yeah, but you know what, Alex, that that that
- 29:42Speaker 1: cap nonsense? Who's who's uh emblem? You're gonna pay the cap?
- 29:47Speaker 1: That is horse crack. There should be nothing on that cap.
- 29:51Speaker 1: That's just my opinion. I mean he did great for
- 29:54Speaker 1: the in that in that short time with the Brewers,
- 29:57Speaker 1: he single handedly got them into the playoffs.
- 29:59Speaker 2: He also Cleveland back on the map single and he
- 30:03Speaker 2: wanted to.
- 30:03Speaker 1: Sign on award with Cleveland. So again, even like with
- 30:08Speaker 1: all these guys, it's so that is one of those
- 30:12Speaker 1: dumb things that irks me. If a going to have
- 30:15Speaker 1: a Dodger a cap on or a metcap, he took
- 30:19Speaker 1: a medcap.
- 30:20Speaker 2: How about a Marlin cap because he was on the
- 30:21Speaker 2: Marlins peramente too, was.
- 30:23Speaker 1: For eight days.
- 30:27Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I get your point. And I guess he
- 30:32Speaker 2: put on the Yankee cap because he just he won
- 30:34Speaker 2: the World Series here and all that.
- 30:36Speaker 1: But really he's living in New York.
- 30:38Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's living in New York too, So there's
- 30:41Speaker 2: so much to it. Now. The other thing that's happening
- 30:45Speaker 2: this week, in all the craziness of the Natty and
- 30:47Speaker 2: the AFC title NFC title games, is we have a
- 30:52Speaker 2: team back on the rebound here. Friend, the Rangers after
- 30:56Speaker 2: the New Year just said all right, it is a
- 30:58Speaker 2: new year, let's act differently. And then seven and one
- 31:02Speaker 2: since the New year started. I mean, wow, what a change.
- 31:06Speaker 2: It's like a light bulb switch or something.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Well, as we spoke about when they were going through
- 31:11Speaker 1: that stretch where they were winning four and losing fifteen,
- 31:15Speaker 1: which is almost unfathomable for a team of that caliber
- 31:20Speaker 1: to go through a stretch like that. And we said
- 31:26Speaker 1: they're too good to continue this way, and if they
- 31:29Speaker 1: did continue this way, there was gonna be major changes
- 31:32Speaker 1: on the ice and behind the bench. Obviously they've gone,
- 31:37Speaker 1: They've gotten points in ten straight games. They are much
- 31:42Speaker 1: more detailed in their play. There's still high level shots,
- 31:48Speaker 1: but not as many as there were. And when you
- 31:52Speaker 1: have the best player on a team and as good
- 31:55Speaker 1: a goalie, if not the best goalie in the league
- 31:58Speaker 1: in Igor sturk In, you got a shot.
- 32:02Speaker 2: And it's possible Igor is happier now that his situation
- 32:05Speaker 2: with the Rangers figured out, the baby is born. We
- 32:08Speaker 2: don't know. Maybe during that stretch of really mediocrity, there
- 32:13Speaker 2: was that issue laying hanging over the locker room, the
- 32:15Speaker 2: trouber thing, the fact that Igor was about to have
- 32:18Speaker 2: a kid and the country. I mean, there's a lot
- 32:19Speaker 2: of emotional stuff in there.
- 32:22Speaker 1: We forget that these are human beings and we think
- 32:24Speaker 1: they're robots and they're not. Uh, And you know, there
- 32:28Speaker 1: was a lot though there was a trouper thing, the
- 32:31Speaker 1: Cocko trade, the healthy scratch of Chris Crider h criter
- 32:37Speaker 1: on the block. All that definitely weighs in on your
- 32:43Speaker 1: mind as a player. But the Jet the Rangers have
- 32:48Speaker 1: limited the high level chances against him in his zone.
- 32:54Speaker 1: KeAndre Miller played a terrific game against Philadelphia. He has
- 32:57Speaker 1: had a bad year. If he has a good year
- 33:00Speaker 1: the rest of the way, that's terrific for them. Man.
- 33:05Speaker 1: We said, let's take a look at the Rangers where
- 33:07Speaker 1: they are at the Four Nations break, which is coming up.
- 33:11Speaker 1: I guess it's February ninth is and that then the
- 33:14Speaker 1: break is a two weeks and see where they are. Well, Alex,
- 33:17Speaker 1: you don't have to wait anymore. They're back. They're back
- 33:20Speaker 1: in the playoff phrase. And uh, I'm sure they're going
- 33:25Speaker 1: to make a trade somewhere that you know, Drury's going
- 33:29Speaker 1: to see something that the things might help him. Uh.
- 33:32Speaker 1: So I think that they're in pretty good shape. Are
- 33:35Speaker 1: you going to continue to have to be on this
- 33:37Speaker 1: hot street? No, just like I knew they were on
- 33:40Speaker 1: a four and fifteen team over that over that stretch.
- 33:45Speaker 1: So and uh, and maybe your boy Matt renpy has
- 33:52Speaker 1: has has learned his lesson and he's playing and he's
- 33:55Speaker 1: playing well on the fourth line, and he's a big guy.
- 33:58Speaker 2: He scored the other night and.
- 33:59Speaker 1: He's border tip in a tip in the other night.
- 34:02Speaker 1: So maybe, uh, he's learned that. You know, I'm not
- 34:07Speaker 1: going to go flying through the air and killing people
- 34:09Speaker 1: and get six or seven game suspension.
- 34:11Speaker 2: Paul Newman was alive, he would have said, kid, that
- 34:14Speaker 2: was only in hotshots. Don't do that crap on the eye.
- 34:18Speaker 1: Well, Alex, did you ever hear what they called the
- 34:22Speaker 1: Gordy how Hat trick?
- 34:25Speaker 2: Yes, I've heard of that.
- 34:27Speaker 1: The Gordie how Hat trick is a goal and assists
- 34:32Speaker 1: and a fight in the game. Now, Gordie how only
- 34:36Speaker 1: had two Gordi how Hat tricks and he played from
- 34:39Speaker 1: nineteen forty six until nineteen eighty one, and he had
- 34:48Speaker 1: a gordiall hat trick in fifty two and in fifty three.
- 34:51Speaker 1: But so but you would think when they talk about
- 34:53Speaker 1: that that he had one hundred. But you know that's
- 34:57Speaker 1: a golden system a fight. So maybe Ramkey's going to
- 35:00Speaker 1: I had a goal assistant to fight down the road.
- 35:02Speaker 1: But the all time leader in Gordy hal Hat tricks.
- 35:06Speaker 1: Something you may not know, and this is everybody listening
- 35:09Speaker 1: the Vancouver coach Rick Hockett had eighteen Gordy Haw hatters,
- 35:14Speaker 1: so just a little a little bit of a little
- 35:17Speaker 1: bit of knowledge.
- 35:18Speaker 2: I really liked watching him play as a flyer by
- 35:20Speaker 2: Rick Tockett. I remember him as a flyer. It was
- 35:23Speaker 2: he was quite a player, all right. Well, on that note, Lou,
- 35:27Speaker 2: one more thing to talk about. And I don't know
- 35:29Speaker 2: what else you have a take on, but Novak Djokovic
- 35:32Speaker 2: is out of the Australian Open and that's kind of,
- 35:35Speaker 2: you know, tough to watch because you and I are
- 35:37Speaker 2: novac enthusiasts. Yes, but is this a sign the sport's
- 35:41Speaker 2: changing a little bit? You know when these older guys
- 35:43Speaker 2: get banged up, you're like, uh oh, or is he
- 35:45Speaker 2: gonna come back, get stronger in the in the this
- 35:47Speaker 2: year or what?
- 35:49Speaker 1: Well, a couple of things. He's as good a compeller
- 35:54Speaker 1: as I've seen in any sport. He's up there with Jordan's,
- 35:57Speaker 1: he's up there with Brady for him to retire because
- 36:04Speaker 1: of injury. And I actually just saw the I just
- 36:07Speaker 1: saw the first second a little while ago. Uh. He
- 36:11Speaker 1: must have really been hurting because he wants to he
- 36:13Speaker 1: wanted to win that twenty twenty fifth Grand Slam, and
- 36:17Speaker 1: I think he probably was doing it to make sure
- 36:19Speaker 1: that he can play in the upcoming French Wimbledon and
- 36:26Speaker 1: US Open. He's thirty seven, He's had he has had injuries,
- 36:31Speaker 1: He's come back. He came back from injury last year
- 36:34Speaker 1: when he had the knee tear at the French Open,
- 36:38Speaker 1: and though you know, he won the gold medal, and
- 36:42Speaker 1: he's he's a fantastic, a fantastic player. I don't think
- 36:45Speaker 1: he's done. I don't think I want I would like
- 36:47Speaker 1: to see him win a couple more Grand Slams before
- 36:49Speaker 1: he goes. And the fact that the crowd in Melbourne
- 36:53Speaker 1: was doing the great Djokovic was a little a little disappointing.
- 36:58Speaker 1: I mean, you're talking about now a great player, one
- 37:01Speaker 1: of the great retrievers of all time, with his great
- 37:05Speaker 1: lateral movement side to side. Uh, he just didn't deserve,
