Latest / Foul Territory / Fair Territory: Winter moves fan Q&A, Correa/Altuve out of WBC
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the Thursday edition of Fair Territory. Sorry
- 0:04Speaker 1: for the little bit of a late start. We had
- 0:06Speaker 1: some technical difficulties. I'm Ken Rosenthal. We are here with
- 0:10Speaker 1: Alana Rizzo and Alana, it seems like your attire is
- 0:14Speaker 1: a little bit different today.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Yeah, technical difficulties. I can technical difficulties, wardrobe malfunction. The
- 0:21Speaker 2: only reason Ken, I am wearing this is because I
- 0:24Speaker 2: lost a bet to Jeremy Meyer, our wonderful producer. I
- 0:28Speaker 2: am a Broncos fan. It is the Patriots that are
- 0:31Speaker 2: going to the Super Bowl, so I am a woman
- 0:34Speaker 2: of my word. I am fulfilling my bet. More on
- 0:37Speaker 2: that coming up and Dude and Dork of the week.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Much more entertaining things to talk about though, with you baseball,
- 0:44Speaker 2: let's talk about it. You had a one on one
- 0:46Speaker 2: with Mark de Rosa, manager of Team USA. How do
- 0:49Speaker 2: you see this team, Ken, for the WBC kind of
- 0:54Speaker 2: shaping up under the leadership of Mark de Rosa.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Well was I wrote in a story today, Alana. This
- 1:00Speaker 1: is the strongest WBC team the usas fielded, and this
- 1:05Speaker 1: is the sixth WBC, so we've had something of a
- 1:08Speaker 1: history now and Team USA won in twenty seventeen, but
- 1:12Speaker 1: if you compare the two rosters, they're not even close.
- 1:15Speaker 1: And I go through that and story, and the biggest
- 1:18Speaker 1: thing that has changed over the years is the willingness
- 1:22Speaker 1: of superstar Major leaguers to participate in this tournament. For
- 1:26Speaker 1: a long time, understandably so, there was reluctance, why am
- 1:30Speaker 1: I disrupting my spring training. Teams were of course not
- 1:34Speaker 1: into it. They still aren't into it for the most part.
- 1:37Speaker 1: But the last WBC, the one in twenty twenty three,
- 1:41Speaker 1: was so electric, so much a tribute to the sport
- 1:47Speaker 1: and all the sport, all that the sport can be.
- 1:50Speaker 1: It swayed a lot of people. It swayed a lot
- 1:53Speaker 1: of fans, It swayed a lot of players. It may
- 1:55Speaker 1: have even swayed some teams to say, Okay, we get it.
- 2:00Speaker 1: For those fans out there who are critical of the WBC,
- 2:03Speaker 1: I understand. You don't want your players disrupted. You want
- 2:06Speaker 1: them simply devoted to their teams, your favorite teams. I
- 2:10Speaker 1: will only say this, watch the games, watch this sport
- 2:14Speaker 1: at its highest level. And that's what it is. When
- 2:17Speaker 1: you have all these great players from all these different
- 2:19Speaker 1: countries competing in one tournament. You see elite baseball, and
- 2:25Speaker 1: that is what we saw the last time. Just so happened.
- 2:27Speaker 1: We got a slew of dramatic games as well, So
- 2:30Speaker 1: I'm expecting that the tournament is going to be just
- 2:33Speaker 1: as much fun this year. And again Aaron Judge, cal
- 2:38Speaker 1: Raley on one team, with Bobby Witt, with Corbyn Carroll,
- 2:41Speaker 1: with all these other superstars, Bryce Harper, then you have
- 2:44Speaker 1: Tarrek Schouble and Paul Sken's heading the starting rotation. That's
- 2:49Speaker 1: pretty good.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Really good Ken. And you know there have been some
- 2:53Speaker 2: times where we'll talk about it a little bit too.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Carlos Correa, Jose al Tuove not participating me because of
- 2:58Speaker 2: an insurance issue. But Clayton Kershaw Ken had that same
- 3:01Speaker 2: issue the last time the WBC came around. But he's
- 3:04Speaker 2: retired now and Mark Durossa has Clayton Kershaw on his team.
- 3:09Speaker 2: What more can you tell us about his role his
- 3:11Speaker 2: perceived role?
- 3:12Speaker 1: I remember Kershaw was disappointed in twenty three when he
- 3:15Speaker 1: wasn't cleared by insurance, and we'll explain that in a second, Alana,
- 3:18Speaker 1: as you said, but in this particular instance, with him
- 3:22Speaker 1: now retired and not affiliated with any major league franchise.
- 3:26Speaker 1: He is actually going to play potentially an important role
- 3:29Speaker 1: for Team USA because there could be a circumstance that
- 3:34Speaker 1: comes about where they need a long man, where you
- 3:37Speaker 1: need a guy to suck up four or five innings.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Because so many pictures in this tournament for USA and
- 3:43Speaker 1: other countries as well, will be under restrictions imposed by
- 3:47Speaker 1: their teams. In many cases, most cases understandable restrictions because
- 3:52Speaker 1: of course it's the middle of spring training. You don't
- 3:54Speaker 1: want your starting pitchers going seven innings. You don't want
- 3:57Speaker 1: necessarily your relievers going back to back days. And in
- 4:01Speaker 1: the last tournament in twenty twenty three, De Rosa explains
- 4:04Speaker 1: this in the article they Got Caught. They got caught
- 4:09Speaker 1: in a game against Mexico because they basically ran out
- 4:13Speaker 1: of pitching. They had to kind of have Brady Singer
- 4:16Speaker 1: wear it a little bit. And in the next game,
- 4:20Speaker 1: which was against Canada the next day, Team USA was
- 4:23Speaker 1: very fortunate that lance Lynn went sixty five pitches and
- 4:26Speaker 1: five innings because basically they were out of pitching. So
- 4:30Speaker 1: Kershaw will serve that role as basically someone who mops
- 4:35Speaker 1: it up if necessary, whether in a route in the
- 4:39Speaker 1: USA's favor, or in the other team's favor, and that
- 4:43Speaker 1: is actually an important role. He might never pitch, he
- 4:46Speaker 1: might end up pitching four innings in one game. He
- 4:48Speaker 1: might end up pitching one inning. But to have a
- 4:51Speaker 1: guy like that not affiliated with the team is valuable
- 4:55Speaker 1: because if you had a major league pitcher in that
- 4:57Speaker 1: role and you're telling his team, hey, we might not
- 5:01Speaker 1: pitch them, we might we might pitch them a lot,
- 5:04Speaker 1: that major league team is not going to be satisfied
- 5:07Speaker 1: with that answer.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Ken, Is that why the Giants are asking Logan Webb
- 5:12Speaker 2: to take a pass on the WBC.
- 5:15Speaker 1: The Giants are asking him to take a pass on
- 5:17Speaker 1: the WBC for the same reason every team would prefer
- 5:21Speaker 1: their top pitchers and players not to play. It's the
- 5:25Speaker 1: risk of injury. It's all that. And teams just have concerns,
- 5:30Speaker 1: understandably because there's a lot of money invested in these
- 5:33Speaker 1: players and you don't want to see them get hurt.
- 5:36Speaker 1: But a lot of we were talking about this off air,
- 5:38Speaker 1: and I want to hear your thoughts on air about
- 5:41Speaker 1: how the risk in the WBC, while it's there, it's
- 5:44Speaker 1: not necessarily a greater risk than pitching in spring training. Yes,
- 5:48Speaker 1: the stress level is higher, but you could get You
- 5:51Speaker 1: could get hurt in either environment, no.
- 5:55Speaker 2: No question about that. You can get hurt just as
- 5:56Speaker 2: easily in spring training Ken and no one's making a
- 5:59Speaker 2: big deal out of it because obviously you're working out.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Accidents and injuries happen, But you could easily get hurt
- 6:05Speaker 2: in the WBC. And people are blowing that what I
- 6:07Speaker 2: believe they're blowing it out of proportion.
- 6:09Speaker 1: But think about it.
- 6:09Speaker 2: I mean, you could walk outside and get you know,
- 6:12Speaker 2: stumble over a log or slip on ice, or fall
- 6:15Speaker 2: up the stairs or whatever it is. I mean, there's
- 6:17Speaker 2: ways to get hurt that have nothing to do with baseball.
- 6:19Speaker 2: So allow your team to play for the WBC. I
- 6:23Speaker 2: understand why teams are hesitant.
- 6:25Speaker 1: I get it.
- 6:25Speaker 2: You know, these are highly paid players, and you know
- 6:28Speaker 2: it's a commodity for the team. But it's an honor
- 6:31Speaker 2: not to put on this jersey, this Patriots jersey, but
- 6:34Speaker 2: it is an honor to put on a WBC team
- 6:37Speaker 2: USA jersey. That being said, can it doesn't look like
- 6:41Speaker 2: the Astros are going to allow Jose Altuve and Carlos
- 6:45Speaker 2: care at a player. Maybe it's more of an insurance
- 6:47Speaker 2: issue for those two players because the Astros have had
- 6:50Speaker 2: some injury prone years as of late. What more can
- 6:53Speaker 2: you tell us?
- 6:55Speaker 1: Well, what the astros are saying and what the players
- 6:57Speaker 1: are saying is that it is an insurance issue. Now,
- 7:00Speaker 1: let me explain how this works. So each player in
- 7:04Speaker 1: the WBC has to be insured, and MLB and the
- 7:08Speaker 1: Union pick and insurer, and that insurer basically evaluates every
- 7:13Speaker 1: player and when it denies insurance because perhaps of past
- 7:17Speaker 1: injuries in Korea's case or without Tuove, he had an
- 7:20Speaker 1: offseason surgery, albeit a minor one, but he had one,
- 7:24Speaker 1: then the team can go ahead and have the player
- 7:28Speaker 1: play if they guarantee a salary. But if they don't,
- 7:31Speaker 1: and most teams are not going to guarantee a player's
- 7:33Speaker 1: salary if he's not insured. If they don't do that,
- 7:36Speaker 1: then the player is risking losing his salary if he
- 7:40Speaker 1: gets hurt during the WBC. So when a player like
- 7:44Speaker 1: Kara is told you're not getting insured, he's not going
- 7:48Speaker 1: to play and risk his entire salary because if he
- 7:50Speaker 1: gets hurt in some freak way, he won't get paid.
- 7:53Speaker 1: And that is obviously a huge risk. And you see
- 7:57Speaker 1: this surface from time to time with different players. We
- 8:00Speaker 1: talked about Kershaw in twenty three. Now the Dodgers were
- 8:04Speaker 1: not willing to guarantee his salary, so he didn't play.
- 8:07Speaker 1: The Tigers, on the other hand, did make that exception
- 8:10Speaker 1: for Miguel Cabrera. I'm not sure why. I don't remember
- 8:13Speaker 1: the exact circumstances, but that's rare. You don't see a
- 8:17Speaker 1: team say go to the dB, go to the WBC.
- 8:20Speaker 1: If you get hurt, we'll pay you. That doesn't generally happen, No.
- 8:25Speaker 2: It does not.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Now.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Channler Rome, who does a great job covering the Houston
- 8:28Speaker 2: Astros you can also see him on Crush City Territory,
- 8:31Speaker 2: had an article about what Carlos Korea was saying. Ken
- 8:35Speaker 2: about the injuries with the Astros quote, we had way
- 8:38Speaker 2: too many injuries last year, and I feel like when
- 8:40Speaker 2: I got here, people did not have the routine they
- 8:43Speaker 2: needed to have in order for them to be able
- 8:45Speaker 2: to withstand the whole season. That's coming from Carlos Carea.
- 8:49Speaker 2: You can see it here more on Chandler Rome's story
- 8:51Speaker 2: in the Athletic. I mean, is that kind of something
- 8:55Speaker 2: that the leadership in terms of the players are feeling
- 8:58Speaker 2: with Houston? Ken I don't want you to for Carlos Korea,
- 9:02Speaker 2: but injuries were an issue for that club last year.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Injuries have been an issue for this team for several years.
- 9:08Speaker 1: If you go back to twenty four, Kyle Tucker had
- 9:11Speaker 1: that stress fracture. I believe in his shit that was misdiagnosed,
- 9:15Speaker 1: and there have been a number of different things with
- 9:18Speaker 1: the Astros over the years. I don't know what their
- 9:21Speaker 1: protocols are. I don't know what the problem is. But Correa,
- 9:24Speaker 1: who is generally one of the most honest players in
- 9:27Speaker 1: the game, is speaking to conditioning it sounds like and
- 9:31Speaker 1: routines as much as he is medical treatment. So what
- 9:35Speaker 1: he's saying is that the players have to get their
- 9:38Speaker 1: acts together, that the organization has to get its act together.
- 9:42Speaker 1: And obviously, when you're a team the caliber of Houston,
- 9:45Speaker 1: you don't want injuries, unnecessary injuries, perhaps compromising your season.
- 9:50Speaker 1: And Korea is while an injury prone player in many ways,
- 9:54Speaker 1: he's had a lot of stuff. He takes great care
- 9:57Speaker 1: of himself, and he's a guy that is tune to
- 10:01Speaker 1: all of the physical aspects of.
- 10:02Speaker 2: The game, and he tell you what he is one
- 10:04Speaker 2: of the guys that is most intelligent and well educated
- 10:09Speaker 2: on the saber metrics of the game. You talked to
- 10:11Speaker 2: Carlos Korea. He's completely into all of the analytics stuff.
- 10:14Speaker 2: But it is safe to say that the astros and
- 10:16Speaker 2: injuries a touchy subject, can to say the least. For
- 10:20Speaker 2: more on the astros, subscribe to Crush City Territory. Rome
- 10:23Speaker 2: and Tyler Stafford have more takeaways from FanFest in their
- 10:27Speaker 2: latest episode. Subscribe on YouTube and share with the friend
- 10:29Speaker 2: the Foul Territory Network Baseball the way it should be covered.
- 10:33Speaker 2: We'll be back with Grohan Ken right after this. All right,
- 10:42Speaker 2: welcome back to Fair Territory with Ken Rosenthalis. Time now
- 10:45Speaker 2: to ask Ken some questions. The first one is in
- 10:48Speaker 2: regards to the Braves. Ken Tyler Max Switt Smith wants
- 10:51Speaker 2: to know should the Braves add a right handed bat
- 10:53Speaker 2: to pair with Yaz in left field as a DH,
- 10:55Speaker 2: especially with Kim and Murphy out to start the year.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Could in ozoona return makes sense.
- 11:03Speaker 1: I hadn't actually thought about this, but with the injuries
- 11:06Speaker 1: that they're dealing with with Kim and Murphy at the
- 11:08Speaker 1: start the year, it is something that perhaps they would consider.
- 11:13Speaker 1: I don't know that it would be a guy like
- 11:16Speaker 1: a Zuna that they'd have to pay a good amount
- 11:18Speaker 1: of money too. Maybe it's a lesser player or even
- 11:22Speaker 1: a non roster player. There's still a lot of free
- 11:24Speaker 1: agents out there and some are going to have to
- 11:26Speaker 1: take non roster deals. Their biggest focus, of course, remains
- 11:30Speaker 1: a starting pitcher. That is something they want to do,
- 11:33Speaker 1: but it's something they haven't done yet, so that will
- 11:36Speaker 1: be an interesting thing to keep an eye on. Good
- 11:38Speaker 1: question there.
- 11:39Speaker 2: All right, what starting pitcher? Are you surprised Ken is
- 11:43Speaker 2: still on the free agent market? Perhaps maybe from Bervaldez
- 11:47Speaker 2: and Zach Gallan This is from armand is amazing, and
- 11:50Speaker 2: maybe the question is are you surprised that both of
- 11:52Speaker 2: them are still available?
- 11:55Speaker 1: Yes, I am surprised both are still out there. We
- 11:58Speaker 1: do see every year players linger and not get their
- 12:02Speaker 1: values early in free agency and wait to see if
- 12:05Speaker 1: they can get it later. Now from for Valdez and
- 12:08Speaker 1: Galen are two entirely different types. Even though they're both
- 12:12Speaker 1: qualifying offer free agents, both rejected qualifying offers and therefore
- 12:17Speaker 1: are subject to drafted compensation. Valdez, it seems to me
- 12:22Speaker 1: it's his age thirty two. Perhaps what he is seeking
- 12:26Speaker 1: that he is not getting. Perhaps that's part of it,
- 12:29Speaker 1: that he's aiming too high, and certainly this cross up
- 12:33Speaker 1: with Sesar Zalazar, the rookie catcher last year, did not
- 12:36Speaker 1: help his reputation within the game, and it seems to
- 12:39Speaker 1: me from the outside, I don't know this for a fact,
- 12:42Speaker 1: that that could be could be affecting his market. Gallen,
- 12:47Speaker 1: I've discussed this in other places. I've written about it.
- 12:50Speaker 1: He was perhaps the least accomplished of the players who
- 12:54Speaker 1: rejected qualifying offers, and it seems that that kind of
- 12:57Speaker 1: player every year kind of gets squeaked and Gallon, it's
- 13:01Speaker 1: a really good pitcher. He had a bad first four
- 13:04Speaker 1: months and a pretty good last two months, a very
- 13:07Speaker 1: good last two months. To me, he is worth three
- 13:11Speaker 1: or four years whatever it might take to get him.
- 13:13Speaker 1: But it seems right now he's not getting it. And
- 13:16Speaker 1: what I foresee for him is following the path that
- 13:19Speaker 1: other Scott Boars clients have followed in use years, short
- 13:22Speaker 1: term deal opt outs, try again next year without.
- 13:25Speaker 2: The qualifying offer. Yeah, kind of like the Cody Bellinger
- 13:28Speaker 2: before he just signed the one sixty five with the
- 13:31Speaker 2: New York Yankees. You mentioned the qualifying offer Ken, how
- 13:33Speaker 2: much do you think that being tied to a free
- 13:35Speaker 2: agent player is a factor.
- 13:38Speaker 1: It definitely is now, it's not for the Juan Soto's
- 13:42Speaker 1: of the world, the Kyle Tuckers of the world. And
- 13:45Speaker 1: when Diaz teams factor it into the equation. We're losing
- 13:49Speaker 1: two draft picks. That is additional cost to what the
- 13:52Speaker 1: salary's going to be. But when the player is good enough,
- 13:56Speaker 1: you're not going to be restricted by that. When you
- 13:58Speaker 1: have a player who is good but not maybe elite,
- 14:03Speaker 1: then you're like, maybe we don't want to do this.
- 14:05Speaker 1: And also depends on a team's draft position. At times,
- 14:09Speaker 1: you can't lose your first round or anymore, but you
- 14:11Speaker 1: lose your second and fifth picks if you're a big
- 14:13Speaker 1: market team signing one of these guys, and that is
- 14:16Speaker 1: prohibitive or at least a deterrent for some clubs.
- 14:21Speaker 2: This is a good question. I've often wondered this myself.
- 14:24Speaker 2: This one comes from Ryan s seven to four to
- 14:26Speaker 2: one four. What's the biggest misconception readers have about anonymous
- 14:31Speaker 2: sourcing and how do you internally vet credibility before publishing?
- 14:35Speaker 2: How do you become the insider that you.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Are well the biggest misconception readers have about sourcing is
- 14:45Speaker 1: when they try to figure out where stuff is coming from.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Now sometimes, yes, it is the obvious person you might think,
- 14:53Speaker 1: or an obvious group of people you might think, But
- 14:55Speaker 1: oftentimes stuff comes out of nowhere. Oftentimes there is not
- 15:00Speaker 1: an agenda. People are always trying to read agendas and
- 15:05Speaker 1: it just kind of works in a variety of ways.
- 15:07Speaker 1: And the other part of this is would you ask
- 15:10Speaker 1: about vetting. That's a good question because when you're in
- 15:14Speaker 1: this position as a reporter, you have to understand that
- 15:19Speaker 1: certain people in the industry, certain sources might be trying
- 15:24Speaker 1: to use you, and you have to read that. Have
- 15:27Speaker 1: I been one hundred good at that or perfect at
- 15:31Speaker 1: that in my career, No, there have been times where
- 15:33Speaker 1: I've missed because I misread somebody or was used frankly
- 15:38Speaker 1: by that person. But you do your best, and for
- 15:42Speaker 1: the majority of us who do this, our track records
- 15:44Speaker 1: are very good. We don't miss very often. But there
- 15:49Speaker 1: are times where, yeah, you have to be very understanding
- 15:55Speaker 1: of where a person is coming from. And that was
- 15:57Speaker 1: something that was taught to me early in my career.
- 15:59Speaker 1: And again, I'm not perfect. No one's perfect. But over
- 16:03Speaker 1: the years I've tried to be as diligent about that
- 16:06Speaker 1: as possible.
- 16:07Speaker 2: How much does trust play into your sources can and
- 16:12Speaker 2: the relationship building and knowing who you can legitimately trust.
- 16:18Speaker 1: A lot of that's everything, and that goes both ways.
- 16:20Speaker 4: By the way, it's not just me trusting the sources,
- 16:23Speaker 4: it's the sources trusting me to handle a particular story
- 16:27Speaker 4: or transaction, whatever the case might be, in the proper
- 16:32Speaker 4: professional way.
- 16:33Speaker 1: And it takes a long time to build that up.
- 16:36Speaker 1: I often have, In fact, I had just yesterday a
- 16:39Speaker 1: young person say Hey, how do I get to be
- 16:40Speaker 1: an insider? Doesn't happen overnight. It takes time to build
- 16:45Speaker 1: your own credibility. It takes time for you to amass
- 16:50Speaker 1: a group of sources or people in the game that
- 16:53Speaker 1: will talk to you. And these things do not happen overnight.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Like anything. It's relationship building and trust and you are
- 16:59Speaker 2: one of the best at that. Coming up here on
- 17:02Speaker 2: Fair Territory with Ken Rosenthal, we're talking about our dude

- 18:28Speaker 1: My dude of the week are the Washington Post sports
- 18:30Speaker 1: writers and all of the Washington Post sports writers that
- 18:34Speaker 1: I've read and admired over the years. If you don't
- 18:37Speaker 1: know what is happening at the Washington Post, Basically there's
- 18:40Speaker 1: talk of mass layoffs, the elimination potentially of the sports
- 18:45Speaker 1: department and the international reporting department, which is one of
- 18:48Speaker 1: the best in the world, and so many people at
- 18:52Speaker 1: the Washington Post have been inspirations to me. I'm not
- 18:54Speaker 1: going to name them all right here, but it's one
- 18:56Speaker 1: of the best sports sections in the country. It has
- 18:59Speaker 1: been one of the best sports sections in the country.
- 19:02Speaker 1: I tweeted my thoughts the other day about the way
- 19:04Speaker 1: it's been handled and all of that. But this is
- 19:06Speaker 1: simply to express my admiration and also my concern for
- 19:12Speaker 1: what is going on there, to all my friends who
- 19:14Speaker 1: work there and all my friends who have worked there
- 19:17Speaker 1: in the past. So Washington Post sports writers due.
- 19:19Speaker 2: To the weeks, absolutely such talented, hardworking people, certainly hoping
- 19:24Speaker 2: for the best that that situation resolves itself in a
- 19:26Speaker 2: positive way. My due to the week is the Colorado Rockies,
- 19:29Speaker 2: and the reason I say it, and I don't often
- 19:31Speaker 2: give them praise. I think they're headed in the right
- 19:34Speaker 2: direction though, and I like that with Paul Di Pavesto
- 19:37Speaker 2: and obviously Walker mon for taking over. But I am
- 19:41Speaker 2: giving them the due to the week because they're doing this.
- 19:43Speaker 2: They are doing a statue unveiling of two Hall of famers,
- 19:46Speaker 2: of course Larry Walker on August twenty third, Todd Helton,
- 19:49Speaker 2: who I got the privilege of covering for a lot
- 19:52Speaker 2: of his career in Colorado on September nineteenth, obviously both
- 19:56Speaker 2: in cooper'stown. And I like that they're doing it separately
- 19:59Speaker 2: so each man has his proper due. Congratulations, rockies, you
- 20:03Speaker 2: are my dudes of the week.
- 20:06Speaker 1: All right.
- 20:06Speaker 2: Time now for our dork of the week. All right, Ken,
- 20:19Speaker 2: you're going off the beaten path again this week?
- 20:21Speaker 1: What is it? I am? And I'm very happy to
- 20:24Speaker 1: go off the beaten path for this particular group, the
- 20:28Speaker 1: dork of the week. The dorks of the week, in
- 20:30Speaker 1: my opinion, are the NFL Hall of Fame voters. Now,
- 20:35Speaker 1: I understand that Bill Belichick didn't get put in on
- 20:39Speaker 1: the first try because of some process questions with the
- 20:44Speaker 1: voting It's been a different process than in the past,
- 20:47Speaker 1: and voters found it difficult to kind of sort through it.
- 20:50Speaker 1: I get that. All all I'm saying is this one
- 20:54Speaker 1: can't be blamed on the BBWAA. We had nothing to
- 20:57Speaker 1: do with it. We're all your complain about our own votes,
- 21:01Speaker 1: and perhaps some justifiable complaints about our votes, but this one,
- 21:05Speaker 1: this has nothing to do with us. So I'm living large.
- 21:08Speaker 1: I'm sitting pretty in the NFL Hall of Fame. Writers
- 21:11Speaker 1: there the dorks of the week.
- 21:13Speaker 2: That's all right, It's about time. I don't like the Patriots.
- 21:16Speaker 2: I can't stand the Patriots despite having to wear this
- 21:19Speaker 2: stupid jersey. But Bill Belichick is a first ballot Hall
- 21:23Speaker 2: of Famer, and anybody I think there's been fifty nine
- 21:25Speaker 2: Super Bowls and he's won eight of them.
- 21:27Speaker 1: So stop it.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Okay, he's a first ballot Hall of Famer, all right.
- 21:30Speaker 2: My dude to the or dork of the week is
- 21:32Speaker 2: myself because I made a bet with our wonderful producer,
- 21:35Speaker 2: Jeremy Meyer, and also Andy Ottovic, who does a great
- 21:38Speaker 2: job with the medical team for the Los Angeles Dodgers,
- 21:40Speaker 2: who is a Patriots fan, that the Broncos were going
- 21:44Speaker 2: to beat the Patriots of the AFC Championship. And also
- 21:48Speaker 2: dork of the week is Sean Payton for not kicking
- 21:50Speaker 2: the simple points, the easy points early in the game
- 21:53Speaker 2: and deciding to go forward on fourth and one so
- 21:56Speaker 2: I have to wear this stupid jersey. I am my
- 21:59Speaker 2: own dork of the week. I am not going to
- 22:03Speaker 2: be enjoying the Super Bowl. And there you have it. Yeah,
- 22:08Speaker 2: that's it. I'm the dork of the week and Sean Payton,
- 22:11Speaker 2: you too are the dork of the week. And by
- 22:13Speaker 2: the way, why did we fire our offensive coordinator when
- 22:15Speaker 2: Sean Payton is the one calling all of the offensive calls? Hey,
- 22:18Speaker 2: you know whatever, it's fine. We do have one more question.
- 22:23Speaker 1: That was a rant worthy of your old partner the
- 22:25Speaker 1: mad Dog.
- 22:26Speaker 2: Yes, yes, seriously, but I'm doing it at a lower
- 22:29Speaker 2: octave than Chris Russo would do it. One more question
- 22:32Speaker 2: for you, Ken before we get to break here, Jim
- 22:36Speaker 2: Jim Wood that wants to know can someone please wake
- 22:39Speaker 2: up the Mariners?
- 22:40Speaker 3: Ken?
- 22:40Speaker 2: What are the Ends doing.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Good? Question? And Josh Naylor was their big acquisition early,
- 22:47Speaker 1: but we've all anticipated that in addition to getting the
- 22:50Speaker 1: bullpen piece that they did with Jose Ferrera, which was
- 22:53Speaker 1: good from the Nationals. We all thought they were going
- 22:56Speaker 1: to get one more infielder. They still might get one more.
- 23:00Speaker 1: They've been linked to Brendan Donovan. Brendan Donovan has not
- 23:03Speaker 1: been traded yet. There are other infielders that still might
- 23:06Speaker 1: be available. So I would not judge the Mariners anymore
- 23:10Speaker 1: than I would have judged the Mets two weeks ago
- 23:12Speaker 1: when it seems their off season is not complete. Still
- 23:16Speaker 1: a long way to go before opening day, and heck,
- 23:18Speaker 1: there's a week to go before spring training camps open,
- 23:21Speaker 1: and that's not really a deadline of any sort. So
- 23:24Speaker 1: given Mariners a little bit more time before condemning them,
- 23:27Speaker 1: that's what I would say.
- 23:28Speaker 2: Okay, a little bit more time. I'm still surprised that
- 23:31Speaker 2: a U henne O Suarez is still out there on
- 23:33Speaker 2: the free agent market. I think a lot of people
- 23:36Speaker 2: are surprised about that as well. We didn't necessarily want
- 23:39Speaker 2: this to be a WBC preview, but there have been
- 23:43Speaker 2: some additional announcements regarding the World Baseball Classic, particularly with
- 23:48Speaker 2: Team Venezuela, Jackson Curio, Ronald Acunia Junior, will You Abray You?
- 23:52Speaker 2: And MIKEL. Garcia all going to be part of the WBC.
- 23:57Speaker 2: I love this for Team Venezuela, they have always been
- 24:00Speaker 2: a force. Again you said it earlier, but in case
- 24:03Speaker 2: you're just joining us, this is good for the game, Ken,
- 24:06Speaker 2: this is fun. You want these star players representing their countries.
- 24:11Speaker 1: And plus what we've seen over the years in the
- 24:13Speaker 1: WBC and now we're seeing from our team as well
- 24:16Speaker 1: the US team is this sense of national pride and
- 24:21Speaker 1: Akunya and Churio, these guys, the players from the Dominican Republic,
- 24:25Speaker 1: the players from all the different countries, Japan especially, perhaps
- 24:29Speaker 1: they love playing for their countries. They see it as
- 24:32Speaker 1: an obligation to play for their countries. And Paul Skeens
- 24:36Speaker 1: when he talked to Mark de Rose about playing for
- 24:38Speaker 1: Team USA, he said, you don't have to twist my arm,
- 24:41Speaker 1: you don't have to pitch me at all. I want
- 24:44Speaker 1: to play for all the servicemen and service women out there.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Paul Skeins, of course, went to the US Air Force
- 24:50Speaker 1: Academy before LSU. So there is that growing sense of
- 24:55Speaker 1: pride in playing for your country, and that is a
- 24:58Speaker 1: really cool thing to see and it adds a layer
- 25:01Speaker 1: of emotion to this tournament. That you just don't see
- 25:05Speaker 1: in Major League Baseball on a regular basis. You'll maybe
- 25:08Speaker 1: see that kind of emotion in the playoffs, of course,
- 25:10Speaker 1: but in this tournament you see it.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Every night now or Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado
- 25:16Speaker 2: birthplace to yours truly, Colorado Springs, Colorado. Let me ask
- 25:21Speaker 2: you this, Ken, when do you think it was the
- 25:24Speaker 2: shift of players not really caring about the WBC and
- 25:27Speaker 2: all of a sudden clamoring to be called to play.
- 25:31Speaker 1: That shift took place really with US players. There wasn't
- 25:35Speaker 1: a shift necessary with players from other countries before that.
- 25:38Speaker 1: But that twenty twenty three WBC. If you remember Trey
- 25:43Speaker 1: Turner's Grand Slam against Venezuela in the quarterfinals, it was
- 25:47Speaker 1: a go ahead Grand Slam, amazing moment, and of course
- 25:50Speaker 1: the final against Japan, when Otani came in from the
- 25:53Speaker 1: bullpen to face his then Los Angeles Angels teammate Mike
- 25:56Speaker 1: Trout and strike him out to give Japan that victory
- 26:01Speaker 1: in an amazing game, three to two Japan one. All
- 26:04Speaker 1: of that and all of the games that preceded it
- 26:07Speaker 1: that were so dramatic and so emotional and so just
- 26:11Speaker 1: electric that is what caused the shift among the US players.
- 26:15Speaker 1: The one two maybe were reluctant before suddenly they all
- 26:19Speaker 1: want it in.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I love it. I'll never forget when Mike Trout
- 26:22Speaker 2: walked out holding the US flag and show Heytani walked
- 26:25Speaker 2: out wearing team holding Team Japan. That was awesome. All right,
- 26:29Speaker 2: thanks guys for watching and listening. Foul Territory is next.
- 26:32Speaker 2: Fair with Ken is back on Monday. We'll talk to
- 26:35Speaker 2: you then
