- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday, it's the 5th of
- 0:16March and it's great to have your company as we continue,
- 0:19boy, in this hard hitting, high stakes set of readings this week
- 0:25as we are in our second. Last week of reading the stories
- 0:28about the kings of Israel and Judah.
- 0:31And yesterday ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, right?
- 0:34You've got this overwhelming army on your doorstep
- 0:38threatening to destroy you and saying don't believe in that
- 0:42ridiculous promise of deliverance from God.
- 0:45Believe in me, the emperor, the king of Assyria, and I will give
- 0:50you a good life somewhere else. And you know, I've got to say, I
- 0:54think I've been converted today. Previously, if you had asked me
- 0:58what chapter in kings I thought showed the greatest attributes
- 1:03of the the Kingdom of Israel, I would have said, oh, it's that
- 1:06glorious chapter where Solomon is kind of at his heart of his
- 1:10power and everyone just agrees that he is the greatest king who
- 1:14has ever lived and that Israel is the greatest nation.
- 1:17But I think actually this chapter today, this chapter of
- 1:22the King, of God's people relying entirely in overwhelming
- 1:27odds in God's provision, and then God's prophet speaking in
- 1:34support of the king and his decision, and then seeing the
- 1:37way that this plays out to the threat on their doorstep.
- 1:40This is this is God working with his king and with his people in
- 1:45the most glorious way. So let us enjoy this chapter as
- 1:50we see how King Hezekiah responds to King Sennacherib on
- 1:54his doorstep, shaking his first and making all sorts of threats
- 1:59as we read together Second Kings chapter 19.
- 2:13When King Hezekiah heard their report, he tore his clothes and
- 2:18put on burlap and went into the temple of the Lord.
- 2:22And he sent Aliakim, the palace administrator, Shebner, the
- 2:25court secretary, and the leading priests, all dressed in burlap,
- 2:29to the prophet Isaiah son of Amos.
- 2:32They told him this is what King Hezekiah says.
- 2:37Today is a day of trouble, insults and disgrace.
- 2:41It is like when a child is ready to be born, but the mother has
- 2:44no strength to deliver the baby. But perhaps the Lord your God
- 2:48has heard the Assyrian chief of staff sent by the king to defy
- 2:52the living God and will punish him for his words.
- 2:56I'll pray for those of us who were left after King Hezekiah's
- 3:01officials delivered the King's message to Isaiah.
- 3:04The prophet replied, Say to your master, this is what the Lord
- 3:09says. Do not be disturbed by this
- 3:12blasphemous speech against me from the Assyrian King's
- 3:15messages. Listen, I myself will move
- 3:19against him, and the king will receive a message that he is
- 3:23needed at home, so he will return to his land, where I will
- 3:27have him killed with a sword. Meanwhile, the Assyrian chief of
- 3:32staff left Jerusalem and went to consult the king of Syria, who
- 3:36had left Lakish and was attacking Libna.
- 3:40Soon afterward, King Sennacherib received word that King Tahaka
- 3:45of Ethiopia was leading an army to fight against him.
- 3:49Before leaving to meet the attack, he sent messengers back
- 3:52to Hezekiah and Jerusalem with this message.
- 3:56This message is for King Hezekiah of Judah.
- 3:59Don't let your God, in whom you trust, deceive you with promises
- 4:04that Jerusalem will not be captured by the king of Assyria.
- 4:08You know perfectly well what the kings of Assyria have done.
- 4:11Wherever they have gone, they have completely destroyed
- 4:15everyone who stood in their way. Why should you be any different?
- 4:20Have the gods of other nations rescued them?
- 4:23Such nations have Gozan, Haran, Rezef, and the people of Eden
- 4:28who were in Telesa. My predecessors destroyed them
- 4:33all. What happened to the king of
- 4:35Hamath and the king of Arpad? What happened to the kings of
- 4:39Ceravaim, Heina, and IVA? After Hezekiah received the
- 4:45letter from the messengers and read it, he went up to the
- 4:48Lord's temple and spread it out before the Lord.
- 4:52And Hezekiah prayed this prayer before the Lord.
- 4:55O Lord God of Israel, you are enthroned between the mighty
- 5:00cherubim. You alone are God of all the
- 5:04kingdoms of the earth. You alone created the heavens
- 5:08and the earth. Bend down, O Lord, and listen.
- 5:13Open your eyes, O Lord, and see. Listen to Sennacherib's words of
- 5:19defiance against the living God. It is true, Lord, that the kings
- 5:24of Assyria have destroyed all these nations, and they have
- 5:28thrown the gods of these nations into the fire and burned them.
- 5:33But of course the Assyrians could destroy them.
- 5:37They were not gods at all, only idols of wood and stone shaped
- 5:40by human hands. Now, O Lord our God, rescue us
- 5:46from his power. Then all the kingdoms of the
- 5:49earth will know that you alone, O Lord our God.
- 5:57Then Isaiah, son of Amos, sent this message to Hezekiah.
- 6:02This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says.
- 6:06I have heard your prayer about King Sennacherib of Assyria, and
- 6:10the Lord has spoken this word against him.
- 6:14The virgin daughter of Zion despises you and laughs at you.
- 6:20The daughter of Jerusalem shakes her head in derision.
- 6:24As you flee. Whom have you been defying and
- 6:28ridiculing? Against whom did you raise your
- 6:31voice? At whom did you look with such
- 6:34haughty eyes? It was the Holy One of Israel.
- 6:39By your messengers you have defied the Lord, you have said.
- 6:44With my Chariots I have conquered the highest mountains,
- 6:47Yes, the remotest peaks of Lebanon.
- 6:50I've cut down its tallest Cedars and its finest Cypress trees.
- 6:56I have reached its farthest corners and explored its deepest
- 7:00forests. I've dug wells in many foreign
- 7:03lands and refreshed myself with their water.
- 7:06With the sole of my foot I stopped up all the rivers of
- 7:11Egypt. But have you not heard?
- 7:15I decided this long ago. Long ago I planned it, and now I
- 7:21am making it happen. I plan for you to crush
- 7:24fortified cities into heaps of rubble.
- 7:27That is why their people have so little power and are so
- 7:30frightened and confused. They are as weak as grass, as
- 7:34easily trampled as tender green shoots.
- 7:38They are like grass sprouting on a housetop, scorched before it
- 7:42can grow, lush and tall. But I know you well, where you
- 7:46stay and when you come and go. I know the way you have raged
- 7:51against me, and because of your raging against me and your
- 7:55arrogance, which I've heard for myself, I will put my hook in
- 8:00your nose and my bit in your mouth.
- 8:04I will make you return by the same Rd on which you came.
- 8:09Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, Here is the proof that what I
- 8:13say is true. This year you will eat only what
- 8:18grows up by itself and next to you.
- 8:21You will eat what springs up from that.
- 8:24In the third year you will plant crops and harvest them.
- 8:28You will tend vineyards and eat their fruit.
- 8:32And you who are left in Judah, who have escaped the ravages of
- 8:35the siege, will put roots down in your own soil and will grow
- 8:40up and flourish. For a remnant of my people will
- 8:44spread out from Jerusalem, a group of survivors from Mount
- 8:49Zion. The passionate commitment of the
- 8:52Lord of Heaven's armies will make this happen.
- 8:56And this is what the Lord says about the King of Assyria.
- 9:00His armies will not enter Jerusalem.
- 9:04They will not even shoot an arrow at it.
- 9:07They will not March outside its gates with their Shields, nor
- 9:11build banks of earth against its walls.
- 9:14The King will return to his own country by the same Rd on which
- 9:18he came. He will not enter this city,
- 9:21says the Lord. For my own honour and for the
- 9:25sake of my servant David, I will defend this city and protect it.
- 9:32That night the Angel of the Lord went out to the Assyrian camp
- 9:37and killed 185,000 Assyrian soldiers.
- 9:43When the surviving Assyrians woke up the next morning, they
- 9:46found corpses everywhere. Then King Sennacherib of Assyria
- 9:52broke camp and returned to his own land.
- 9:55He went home to his capital of Nineveh and stayed there.
- 9:59One day, while he was worshipping in the temple of his
- 10:02God Nisrock, his sons Adramalek and Sharaza killed him with
- 10:07their swords. They then escaped to the land of
- 10:10Ararat and another son, Essa Harden, became the next king of
- 10:15Syria. Lord, thank you for this
- 10:27chapter. Thank you for the faithfulness
- 10:30of Hezekiah and how he comes before you with his needs and
- 10:33prayer. Our Lord, you know we live in a
- 10:37world where action is celebrated.
- 10:40We're doing things and getting results ourselves is the way we
- 10:43go about it. But Lord, you call us to a
- 10:47different way to bring our problems, to bring our joys, and
- 10:51to bring our challenges before you, to share them with you in
- 10:56prayer. For thank you that you always
- 11:00have your ear open to hear our prayers and that you invite us
- 11:05that you will us, that you want us to come to you with
- 11:08everything big and small, glorious, terrible and mundane.
- 11:16So Lord, today as we go about the busyness of our worlds and
- 11:20our lives, I pray that you would bring us to our knees again and
- 11:26again in prayer to you, that we would include you in every part
- 11:30of our day, prompt us, draw us back to you so that through
- 11:35these prayers we can be reminded that you are indeed a part of
- 11:39every moment of our life, our wonderful, engaged, loving God.
- 11:47So we worship you and we praise you, and we thank you for being
- 11:51a part of every moment of our day, and we pray all of this in
- 11:55Jesus name, Amen.
