- 0:09Speaker 1: What's happening? Everyone? Welcome in to another episode of The
- 0:12Speaker 1: Checko Daily. Andrew de Checko here, Eagles beat reporter for
- 0:16Speaker 1: insidethebirds dot Com, and the Eagles on Wednesday strike a trade,
- 0:21Speaker 1: acquiring quarterback Andy Dalton from the Carolina Panthers in exchange
- 0:26Speaker 1: for a twenty twenty seven seventh round pick. And on
- 0:30Speaker 1: the surface, it may be a little curious, right because
- 0:34Speaker 1: the Eagles already have Tanner McKee. He is in the
- 0:37Speaker 1: last year of his rookie deal, and one would presume
- 0:41Speaker 1: that they're going to look into drafting a quarterback and
- 0:44Speaker 1: all their problems will be resolved. But this is also
- 0:47Speaker 1: a team, in the Philadelphi Eagles, and this is really
- 0:50Speaker 1: important to note. They will leave no stone unturned at
- 0:56Speaker 1: any point when it comes to strengthening the roster, and
- 0:58Speaker 1: the quarterback position is one in which they prioritize, probably
- 1:02Speaker 1: more than most teams around the NFL. And so you
- 1:05Speaker 1: look at it and you can say, is this a
- 1:07Speaker 1: precursor to something else or I don't view it that way.
- 1:11Speaker 1: And it's my understanding that there's no correlation by bringing
- 1:15Speaker 1: in Andy Dalton that that's going to all of a
- 1:17Speaker 1: sudden relate to Tanner McKee and the team moving him
- 1:23Speaker 1: or anything like that. The Eagles have always made it
- 1:26Speaker 1: a priority to strengthen the quarterback room, and you can
- 1:29Speaker 1: go back a number of different years for examples doing that.
- 1:33Speaker 1: They lost Sam Howe in free agency and adding someone
- 1:37Speaker 1: like Andy Dalton who's thirty eight years old. He started
- 1:39Speaker 1: one hundred and sixty nine games in the NFL. That
- 1:42Speaker 1: makes a lot of sense. You look at what he's making.
- 1:46Speaker 1: He slated to make three point nine million this Year's
- 1:50Speaker 1: that money's pretty standard for a number two quarterback. It's
- 1:54Speaker 1: a steep investment for a number three quarterback. But the
- 1:57Speaker 1: Eagles don't operate like most teams it comes to viewing
- 2:01Speaker 1: the quarterback position and the level of importance in which
- 2:03Speaker 1: they place on it. So you take all that into
- 2:06Speaker 1: consideration and they have all their bases covered. That's something
- 2:09Speaker 1: that they have made an emphasis to ensure that they
- 2:13Speaker 1: were doing. Go back to last season, before the regular season,
- 2:18Speaker 1: they traded for Sam Howe. Now did they need Sam
- 2:21Speaker 1: how Well? Tanner McKee was a little banged up in
- 2:25Speaker 1: training camp and missed the first two or three games,
- 2:30Speaker 1: and you know, Sam Howe fulfilled the role of the
- 2:33Speaker 1: number two quarterback. But I think they probably could have
- 2:37Speaker 1: gotten by with an elevation of Kyle McCord or adding
- 2:41Speaker 1: someone even who was waived at during cutdowns, or signing
- 2:47Speaker 1: a veteran to kind of bridge the gap for two
- 2:49Speaker 1: or three weeks. But they saw the value in making
- 2:52Speaker 1: sure that one through three was covered, and they trade
- 2:56Speaker 1: for Sam Howe, so it made a lot of sense
- 3:00Speaker 1: at the time. They lost Sam Howe and free agency,
- 3:03Speaker 1: he goes to the Dallas Cowboys, so it left the
- 3:05Speaker 1: Eagles with only Jalen Hurts. Tanner McKee, who I mentioned,
- 3:10Speaker 1: is in the final year of his rookie deal, and
- 3:12Speaker 1: who knows. There could be a team that blows the
- 3:15Speaker 1: Eagles away in the offseason at some point for a
- 3:19Speaker 1: trade for Tanner McKee, but the Eagles certainly aren't going
- 3:21Speaker 1: to just unload him. And again, this trade shouldn't be
- 3:25Speaker 1: viewed as a either or a precursor to moving off
- 3:30Speaker 1: of Tanner McKee. That's not the way that this trade
- 3:34Speaker 1: should be viewed. And I think Andy Dalton, he's played
- 3:38Speaker 1: for a number of teams. He was drafted in twenty
- 3:40Speaker 1: eleven in the second round, the thirty fifth overall pick
- 3:44Speaker 1: of the Cincinnati Bengals. I remember watching his career at
- 3:47Speaker 1: TCU where it was Andy Dalton. It was the running
- 3:51Speaker 1: back was Matthew Tucker, I think, who also spent some
- 3:58Speaker 1: time with the Eagles, very briefly. I think their receiver
- 4:01Speaker 1: was Josh Boyce. I remember that team very well, but
- 4:05Speaker 1: I liked him coming out of the draft. He was
- 4:07Speaker 1: an older rookie. He's thirty eight years old right now,
- 4:10Speaker 1: and he spent a number of years with the Bengals.
- 4:13Speaker 1: There was four seasons in which he threw for more
- 4:18Speaker 1: than twenty five touchdown passes, two seasons in which he
- 4:21Speaker 1: threw for more than four thousand yards. Then he goes
- 4:25Speaker 1: to the Dallas Cowboys. Then he goes to the Chicago
- 4:31Speaker 1: Bears and the New Orleans Saints. Then he spends three
- 4:33Speaker 1: years with the Carolina Panthers, and he overlapped there in
- 4:38Speaker 1: the twenty twenty three season with Parks Fraser, who is
- 4:42Speaker 1: the Eagles quarterbacks coach right now, but he was the
- 4:44Speaker 1: pass game coordinator when Andy Dalton was in Carolina with
- 4:48Speaker 1: Parks Fraser in twenty twenty three, so there's some familiarity
- 4:52Speaker 1: and a little bit of an overlap there. Andy Dalton
- 4:55Speaker 1: has an eighty four, eighty three and two record as
- 4:59Speaker 1: a starter. He's appeared in one hundred and seventy nine games,
- 5:02Speaker 1: as I mentioned, starting one hundred and sixty nine. So
- 5:06Speaker 1: that kind of experience isn't often found in the NFL
- 5:09Speaker 1: from a backup quarterback position. You don't see someone who's
- 5:13Speaker 1: played the game for fifteen seasons who is going to
- 5:18Speaker 1: be able to stick around for another year for one,
- 5:21Speaker 1: but be able to provide a wealth of knowledge and
- 5:25Speaker 1: experience to a quarterback room that doesn't have a ton
- 5:30Speaker 1: outside of Jayalen Hurts in terms of in game experience.
- 5:33Speaker 1: And so Andy Dalton could maybe help Jayalen Hurts because
- 5:37Speaker 1: Jayalen's learned from a number of quarterbacks throughout his career
- 5:40Speaker 1: and he's had quarterbacks where he can bounce ideas from.
- 5:43Speaker 1: So it's whether it's Gardner Minshew or Sam Howell or
- 5:49Speaker 1: Will Greer, who I think Will Greer is going to
- 5:52Speaker 1: be a coach, a future coach in the NFL. He's
- 5:54Speaker 1: with the Dallas Cowboys right now as a backup quarterback,
- 5:57Speaker 1: but they've always had someone that can be sort of
- 6:00Speaker 1: a sounding board, and in this case, you have someone
- 6:03Speaker 1: like an Andy Dalton who played at a high level
- 6:06Speaker 1: with the Bengals. There is one year where he threw
- 6:08Speaker 1: for thirty three touchdowns in twenty thirteen twenty interceptions, I believe.
- 6:12Speaker 1: But he's played with different types of receivers, he's played
- 6:18Speaker 1: in different offenses. He can be another set of eyes
- 6:21Speaker 1: on the sideline and be able to convey what he's
- 6:23Speaker 1: seeing on the field to Jalen and it may help.
- 6:26Speaker 1: I often think that a lot of those quarterbacks, once
- 6:29Speaker 1: you get to a certain age, you're more or less
- 6:32Speaker 1: an extension of the coaching staff. And so that's kind
- 6:34Speaker 1: of how I'm viewing this right now. Very modest compensation
- 6:38Speaker 1: to get them, and for a team like the Eagles,
- 6:41Speaker 1: it's kind of business as usual. That's how they operate,
- 6:44Speaker 1: that's how they view the quarterback position. So it's not
- 6:47Speaker 1: out of the ordinary in the sense of how the
- 6:49Speaker 1: Eagles operate. But it may be looked at it a
- 6:52Speaker 1: little bit differently if it was another team with another
- 6:55Speaker 1: type of situation.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Hey, if you're like me, you're desensitized to the dozens

- 9:14Speaker 2: one and up.
- 9:17Speaker 1: They also introduced today cornerback Jonathan Jones, who is a veteran.
- 9:22Speaker 1: He was an undrafted free agent in twenty sixteen, played
- 9:25Speaker 1: nine seasons with the New England Patriots. Spent last season
- 9:29Speaker 1: with the Commanders, where he played in twelve games. I
- 9:32Speaker 1: believe he started seven. He's really a nickel player, but
- 9:36Speaker 1: as he said during his first media availability, he can
- 9:40Speaker 1: play safety as well, and he talked about how tough
- 9:45Speaker 1: it was being on the other sideline when well, I
- 9:49Speaker 1: guess he said he started at safety in I forget
- 9:53Speaker 1: what Super Bowl it was, but he talked about the
- 9:56Speaker 1: green confetti coming down and hitting them that had have
- 10:00Speaker 1: been in twenty seventeen when the Eagles beat the Patriots
- 10:03Speaker 1: when he played there, and how he was on a
- 10:05Speaker 1: scooter and he was trying to scooter across the field
- 10:08Speaker 1: and the green confetti was just coming down. But he
- 10:11Speaker 1: says something that was really interesting. And he's really into
- 10:15Speaker 1: aviation and it's a passion of his that he's really
- 10:21Speaker 1: embraced and it's grown over time. He actually flew himself,
- 10:25Speaker 1: as he shared today from Charlotte, North Carolina to Philadelphia
- 10:31Speaker 1: for the Zoom interview that he had, so maybe a
- 10:36Speaker 1: first in terms of stories that I've heard. As it
- 10:38Speaker 1: goes with Eagles free agents, but I thought it was
- 10:41Speaker 1: really fascinating. He came across like a veteran who's seen
- 10:45Speaker 1: it all. He's played with a lot of different players,
- 10:49Speaker 1: He's played with a lot of different coaches. There's the
- 10:51Speaker 1: overlap there with Mike Pellegrino, who's the Eagles secondary coach,
- 10:55Speaker 1: said he's very energetic when asked about him. But I
- 10:59Speaker 1: just get this sense that he's someone that's going to
- 11:01Speaker 1: come in and help the players around him, those younger
- 11:04Speaker 1: players bring them along. And he might be thirty two
- 11:07Speaker 1: years old, but the sense that I get from Jonathan
- 11:10Speaker 1: Jones just from hearing him talk. We haven't seen him obviously,
- 11:13Speaker 1: and we won't see him unto OTAs, but this is
- 11:17Speaker 1: someone that I think can step in and help you
- 11:19Speaker 1: from multiple positions. So can Michael Carter and I talked
- 11:22Speaker 1: about him yesterday. But having pieces like that that are
- 11:25Speaker 1: veterans that know how to play and they're smart, that
- 11:30Speaker 1: could help give Vic Fangio a lot more optionality and
- 11:33Speaker 1: flexibility in the secondary. And I think Jonathan Jones can
- 11:36Speaker 1: still play. I watched this tape from last season where
- 11:39Speaker 1: there are areas of opportunity. Of course, no one's perfect
- 11:42Speaker 1: and there were some blemishes there, but he showed no
- 11:46Speaker 1: signs of a player who had a significant drop off.
- 11:50Speaker 1: And I'm really curious to see how he's able to
- 11:54Speaker 1: acclimate to this defense and maximize this new opportunity here
- 11:59Speaker 1: in Philadelphia. There's so much more to break down. We'll
- 12:03Speaker 1: see what happens in the rest of the week, and
- 12:06Speaker 1: of course, as free agency continues to roll along, there's
- 12:10Speaker 1: pro days, there's thirty visits that are now starting to
- 12:14Speaker 1: come out, and we'll have all that covered. We'll break
- 12:16Speaker 1: all that down for you on Inside the Birds, and
- 12:19Speaker 1: of course right here on The Checko Daily. That's gonna
- 12:22Speaker 1: do it for this episode of The Checko Daily, I'm
- 12:25Speaker 1: Andrew de Checko. We'll catch you on the next one.
