Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Good news for woolkaing Or has made a u turn
- 0:02Speaker 1: on the carpets. If you remember, last year, Housing New
- 0:05Speaker 1: Zealand asked for tenders from synthetic carpet suppliers for more
- 0:09Speaker 1: than five thousand of its homes, which caused an uproar
- 0:12Speaker 1: from the wall sector. Now it will reopen tenders, allowing
- 0:15Speaker 1: bids from suppliers of wool carpets. So the Campaign for
- 0:18Speaker 1: Wall general manager Kara Biggs joins me. Now in Kara,
- 0:21Speaker 1: you must be extatic.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for having us Andrew. We are really ecstatic.
- 0:26Speaker 2: It's very good news. And you know, hats off to
- 0:29Speaker 2: Kying Order because they listened. You know, there was a
- 0:32Speaker 2: huge collective cry across New Zealand of you know, come
- 0:35Speaker 2: on guys, this isn't right. You know what we need
- 0:38Speaker 2: some answers. They knew it wasn't going away, and they
- 0:41Speaker 2: reopen the tender. So it's very good news.
- 0:43Speaker 1: They're allowing bids from wool suppliers, but they can still
- 0:46Speaker 1: decide to go with synthetic. Does that disappoint.
- 0:50Speaker 2: You No, No, Look all that we were asking for
- 0:55Speaker 2: from Kying Order was a chance to be able to
- 0:59Speaker 2: show them not just the price of wool and how
- 1:03Speaker 2: we can compete on price, but how we can compete
- 1:05Speaker 2: on value and significantly outperform synthetic carpets as well. And
- 1:11Speaker 2: you know, I have full confidence in our wall carpet
- 1:13Speaker 2: companies that they can show coying or order that there's
- 1:16Speaker 2: a huge amount of value that maybe needs to be
- 1:19Speaker 2: accounted for by coying order and have a slightly higher weighting.
- 1:23Speaker 2: You know, the value of wool is you know, it's natural,
- 1:26Speaker 2: it's flame resistant, it's warmer, it's more absorbent, all these
- 1:29Speaker 2: things that actually mean that it's a better and healthier
- 1:32Speaker 2: alternative for the people that they're putting into their community housing.
- 1:35Speaker 1: That's I did talk bick about this when the issue
- 1:38Speaker 1: first came up, and everyone said, you just said, will
- 1:41Speaker 1: it's more absorbent and the problem with people in kying
- 1:43Speaker 1: or houses, they're constantly spilling stuff on carpets one hundred percent.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Yeah, And you know, wool carpets are more durable as well.
- 1:52Speaker 2: They actually, if they're looked after, they can actually be
- 1:56Speaker 2: a lot more durable, last a lot longer. So there's
- 1:59Speaker 2: a wee bit of an education that needs to happen
- 2:01Speaker 2: around there as well. But this is all stuff that
- 2:02Speaker 2: we can we can do. You know that this can happen.
- 2:05Speaker 1: So is it an even playing field? But between synthetic
- 2:08Speaker 1: and wall.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Now, I think being able to be a being able
- 2:15Speaker 2: to put a proposal in makes it an even playing
- 2:18Speaker 2: field in this instance. And saying that, I do think
- 2:23Speaker 2: that the waiting around environmental care and you know the
- 2:27Speaker 2: value of wall versus just having a cost conversation is
- 2:31Speaker 2: going to be really important going forward and that's where
- 2:34Speaker 2: we need our government agencies to be thinking not just
- 2:37Speaker 2: about cost but about value for the New Zealand people.
- 2:41Speaker 1: All Right, Kara, I think I congratulate you and I
- 2:43Speaker 1: thank you for your time today. That's Kara Biggs, the
