- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, guys, welcome to another episode of Eating Wild Broke.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I'm your host, Colleen Wit and today we have a
- 0:06Speaker 1: very special guest. We have Norm Steel from you guys
- 0:09Speaker 1: may know him from Gangster Chronicles on The Black Effect,
- 0:13Speaker 1: On the Black Effect. I met you on a panel
- 0:41Speaker 1: through My Heart and in the Black Effect, and I
- 0:43Speaker 1: was like, Gangster Chronicles. I don't know you know, but
- 0:47Speaker 1: if you guys know anything about Gangster Chronicles, Um, what
- 0:50Speaker 1: makes Gangster Chronicles interesting is your perspective on and your
- 0:55Speaker 1: mission of the show, which is you kind of get
- 0:58Speaker 1: the behind the scenes of what's going on in the streets. Um,
- 1:03Speaker 1: and it's not so much about gangsterism. We have to
- 1:07Speaker 1: redefine what gangster means to me as gangster the Colleen
- 1:11Speaker 1: is all you're doing her She's following her dreams. This
- 1:14Speaker 1: is gangster right here, she's actually producing her own show
- 1:17Speaker 1: in conjunction with Black Effect. There's gangster. So gangster to
- 1:21Speaker 1: me is anyone who has overcame into amountable odds to
- 1:24Speaker 1: make something happen. Yeah. So those are the people we
- 1:27Speaker 1: talk about. Whether it's the guy that got to prison,
- 1:29Speaker 1: may have served twenty years and now he owns a
- 1:31Speaker 1: chain of car wash. There's gangster right there. He's made
- 1:34Speaker 1: a change in his life. Yeah, And I like that
- 1:37Speaker 1: you it's it's also like educational and you showcase the
- 1:41Speaker 1: impacts of like what decisions were made that led to
- 1:44Speaker 1: what certain outcomes without glorifying like a negative lifestyle. And
- 1:48Speaker 1: I think, I think when you hear the term gangster chronicles,
- 1:51Speaker 1: you know, And I'm only addressing it now right now
- 1:54Speaker 1: because I want our listeners to like really understand like
- 1:59Speaker 1: your mission and what the show is about if they
- 2:02Speaker 1: haven't already checked it out. But in the interim, I
- 2:05Speaker 1: would love to know what you are cooking us on
- 2:07Speaker 1: eating while broke. Well, right now, you guys are gonna
- 2:10Speaker 1: get treated to big steel noxios. I like that. This
- 2:15Speaker 1: is something I sort of made up when I was
- 2:17Speaker 1: in college because when you're in college, you don't have
- 2:20Speaker 1: that much money, but you want to eat good. So
- 2:26Speaker 1: I think, um Taco Bill might have impeded on my
- 2:28Speaker 1: trademark on my IP when they start doing the reto
- 2:31Speaker 1: locals tackles and all that stuff, because I like using
- 2:34Speaker 1: the retos. They just gave it the extra flavor, right,
- 2:36Speaker 1: And plus I didn't have the money to go out
- 2:38Speaker 1: and buy a whole bunch of season. So it's almost
- 2:41Speaker 1: like the ritos gave you your flavor, right and then
- 2:43Speaker 1: you know you started adding I started adding stuff on
- 2:46Speaker 1: to the dishes. It's time went along and you know
- 2:49Speaker 1: today we're going to be using some ground turkey versus beef.
- 2:52Speaker 1: You know, you can do this with chicken as well.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Or if you're vegan, you can go out and get that.
- 2:56Speaker 1: What's the type of meat that they have, the false
- 2:58Speaker 1: meat and beyond me, beyond me or whatever it was
- 3:02Speaker 1: like that, you know, health conscious? So ready to kick
- 3:05Speaker 1: it off? Yeah, let's kick it off. Start us off.
- 3:07Speaker 1: What are the ingredients before? Right here? We have some
- 3:12Speaker 1: evaporated milk. Now you can use good old milk out
- 3:15Speaker 1: your refrigerator. I choose to use evaporated milk because it
- 3:19Speaker 1: makes the cheese come out cream here. I mixed that
- 3:21Speaker 1: in with the cheese when i'm you know, know it.
- 3:23Speaker 1: But or you can just go get a bag of
- 3:25Speaker 1: shredded cheese if that's what you want to and it's
- 3:27Speaker 1: gonna milk on his own when you put someone hot
- 3:29Speaker 1: ingredients on there. Again, it's whatever you want. We have jalapenos,
- 3:32Speaker 1: we have sour cream. We have ree fried beans, you know,
- 3:36Speaker 1: the whole monkey. And this right here is velvita right here. Again,
- 3:39Speaker 1: it doesn't have to be velvita. You can go out
- 3:41Speaker 1: and get your use your own alternatives. But first we'll
- 3:44Speaker 1: be going to and then you have the cool ranch chips,
- 3:47Speaker 1: the cool ranch, yeah, cool range, the retos right here.
- 3:51Speaker 1: What are you gonna season to meet with them? It's
- 3:55Speaker 1: right here. Good old salt and get old salt and pepper,
- 3:58Speaker 1: because you remember, usually now you can do your meat
- 4:03Speaker 1: with the tacole sauce to you know, taco season something
- 4:06Speaker 1: like that. You can't do that, but I didn't do
- 4:08Speaker 1: that today for the sake of time. And just you know,
- 4:11Speaker 1: again we are dying while broke. The Every student may
- 4:14Speaker 1: not have that extra you know, guard and get the things.
- 4:17Speaker 1: So first what we're gonna do. We're using this ground
- 4:20Speaker 1: of turkey. We're gonna put that in here first. Already hot,
- 4:25Speaker 1: and it's already hot. You know, you want to get
- 4:28Speaker 1: this together because you want the meat to be really
- 4:32Speaker 1: you don't want to be in clumps, you know what
- 4:33Speaker 1: I mean? You want to spread out. Yeah, get this
- 4:38Speaker 1: right here. Once I shot this is that we get
- 4:41Speaker 1: started on getting our cheese together. You want, let me
- 4:44Speaker 1: go ahead and help you. I'll open the cheese, yes, ma'am. Yeah,
- 4:47Speaker 1: you could beat my assistant. Ye see, I'm using my
- 4:50Speaker 1: daughter as using my assistant. You know. Actually she's gotten
- 4:53Speaker 1: the point where she's doing the whole thing. I usually
- 4:55Speaker 1: just to give her directions and I stand back and
- 4:58Speaker 1: kind of look, and she said, and all day you're
- 5:00Speaker 1: too critical. Oh so this is my first time, for
- 5:04Speaker 1: all your listeners, that I've actually ever used Velvita cheese. Um,
- 5:09Speaker 1: I actually did not know if this was an refrigerated
- 5:12Speaker 1: section or not. And it's actually not in the refrigerated section. No,
- 5:16Speaker 1: you can find that right right on the shelf. So dude,
- 5:20Speaker 1: so I put, I put the Velvita cheese on the choppolo,
- 5:23Speaker 1: and I'm going to cut this up right now right there.
- 5:25Speaker 1: I'm not gonna do that to you. Yeah. So my
- 5:28Speaker 1: envisioning of Elvita cheese was like this melted gooey thing.
- 5:32Speaker 1: But I guess that's the end result of what you're
- 5:34Speaker 1: about to do with the Velvita cheese. Yes, I am.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Can we turn this up somewhere? Yeah, so you're a
- 5:39Speaker 1: burner for this? Is this one? Anyway? We can turn
- 5:42Speaker 1: it up. You want to turn up just a little
- 5:44Speaker 1: bit so we can get some heat on there. We go,
- 5:46Speaker 1: put some salt and pepper on there. You know you
- 5:48Speaker 1: gotta have some season. Yeah, of course. And nothing beats
- 5:51Speaker 1: good old fashioned salt and pepper. Yeah. I've had chefs
- 5:55Speaker 1: on the show, and I used to think salt was
- 5:57Speaker 1: something that seasons things. But he had told that salt
- 6:00Speaker 1: is what brings out the flavor. Yes, salt is what
- 6:02Speaker 1: actually brings out the flavor. Like if you're cooking steak
- 6:05Speaker 1: at home. Gets another side note. I see people going
- 6:08Speaker 1: to all these um different little seasons and stuff. The
- 6:12Speaker 1: best season for steak is good old salt and pepper. Yeah. Yeah,
- 6:16Speaker 1: I'm learning because I'm definitely one of those people that
- 6:19Speaker 1: see the steak the steak seasoning sauce, and I dumped
- 6:21Speaker 1: the steak in it. Massage and go marinate. Baby is cooking.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Chop a par velveta right here, and chop this up
- 6:31Speaker 1: right here. Get this right here. We don't need a
- 6:35Speaker 1: whole bunch of this. We probably half a half a
- 6:37Speaker 1: pack of this leftover. And that's for when you want,
- 6:40Speaker 1: you know, some more big steel naxos or whatever you want.
- 6:42Speaker 1: To call them once you start making them. Whatever your
- 6:45Speaker 1: name meals. There would be your version of nacho's. Like
- 6:47Speaker 1: when you're making you can call them Colleen's Colleen's nacho.
- 6:50Speaker 1: I'm okay, keep the steel nachos. I like it. Now,
- 6:54Speaker 1: Velvita cheese, Is that real cheese? Yes, the deal is
- 6:56Speaker 1: real cheese. Well how come it wasn't in a refrigerated section.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Well that's something you have to call then. Ass crafting
- 7:02Speaker 1: these other companies, I don't know how they do it,
- 7:04Speaker 1: but I just know it's nice and convenient. And you
- 7:07Speaker 1: get like, I'm gonna show you the purpose of the
- 7:10Speaker 1: milk because you get a nice little cream take. You know,
- 7:14Speaker 1: you want to cut this assistant. Oh you are, You're
- 7:17Speaker 1: doing a great job. You want to have to get
- 7:20Speaker 1: our chees together. Okay, So for all your listeners, he's
- 7:23Speaker 1: chopping up the Velvita cheese into like little triangles. Yeah. Yeah,
- 7:28Speaker 1: And that's the way you know you pour your milk
- 7:30Speaker 1: in right, So you pour the milk into the pot.
- 7:33Speaker 1: You're right here, see it's right there, pouring this in there,
- 7:39Speaker 1: and we start adding this in there, right, and you
- 7:41Speaker 1: know with the cheese, you want to stir as it
- 7:46Speaker 1: goes along, right, you want to stir this, keep stirring
- 7:49Speaker 1: because and you want to do this in the prefer
- 7:51Speaker 1: FreeFly a nine stick pot because it could be some
- 7:55Speaker 1: nilvents try to clean up. Yeah, there's the sticks to
- 7:58Speaker 1: the pain, right, um hm, six of the pin. Okay,
- 8:05Speaker 1: so you got the milk. You have the carnation milk
- 8:07Speaker 1: with the velveta cheese, and then you're gonna stir it. Yeah,
- 8:10Speaker 1: I'm gonna stir and add more cheese as I go along.
- 8:13Speaker 1: I may even need it even cheese. You know, I'm
- 8:15Speaker 1: gonna get something like this. I'm gonna turn this up
- 8:17Speaker 1: a little bit. Where is this at right here? I
- 8:19Speaker 1: think it's this one? This one, right, you want to
- 8:22Speaker 1: turn it up to like five, turn up like a
- 8:24Speaker 1: little bit, like let's put a beat on that. Right?
- 8:30Speaker 1: Are we gonna bring this to a boiler. We're just
- 8:32Speaker 1: trying to see it all meshed together. We're just trying
- 8:35Speaker 1: to see the all make together. Like you know, when
- 8:37Speaker 1: it goes to a little bit, it won't really boil,
- 8:40Speaker 1: it won't really come to a boil like that. But
- 8:44Speaker 1: you want to get it warm enough to wear milks
- 8:45Speaker 1: the cheese, you know, we want to have a nice move.
- 8:48Speaker 1: You want to have a nice smooth You don't want
- 8:50Speaker 1: it with lumps. And you know what, we're gonna see
- 8:52Speaker 1: some Naxos with big lumps in it. You know. Now,
- 8:54Speaker 1: what do you say to those people that believe that
- 8:57Speaker 1: use the notchal cheese that's in the jaw. They can
- 9:01Speaker 1: use that too. It's whatever, whatever it fits you. If
- 9:05Speaker 1: you find some nice not your cheese that you're a
- 9:07Speaker 1: fan of that comes in the jar or whatever, you
- 9:10Speaker 1: can use that too, even better, even quicker, because you
- 9:14Speaker 1: came up with the velveta cheese. Yeah, I came up
- 9:16Speaker 1: with the velvet cheese. I just thought of added a
- 9:18Speaker 1: different level to it, you know what I mean. Like
- 9:21Speaker 1: I even put a little bit of pepper, and mind
- 9:22Speaker 1: I'm putting no salt because she's already has enough sodium
- 9:25Speaker 1: in it to where you don't want to make it
- 9:27Speaker 1: too salty. You know, you don't want to have it
- 9:30Speaker 1: to wear it's too salty or whatever. You want to
- 9:32Speaker 1: do this and have it to wear, it's not start together,
- 9:35Speaker 1: and then another thing we want to start warming up. Two.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Next we start with all this is getting together. We
- 9:43Speaker 1: start getting our refried beans together, because you want thves
- 9:48Speaker 1: to have a nice little texture to them, because you know,
- 9:50Speaker 1: refried beans are normally stiff, right, you want to get
- 9:53Speaker 1: them to where they're kind of like, you know what's smooth.
- 9:56Speaker 1: It's not too stiff, but smooth, you know. So we're
- 10:00Speaker 1: gonna put these in here. You see all these come out. Yeah,
- 10:04Speaker 1: it looks like a yeah, it looks like you can
- 10:06Speaker 1: of care food. But it's not going to look that
- 10:08Speaker 1: way by the time I'm finished. Well, you gotta show
- 10:10Speaker 1: love to your food. Are you laughing behind your mask?
- 10:14Speaker 1: I think I think there's laughing behind the mask because
- 10:18Speaker 1: I refer to it as a can of careful. Well,
- 10:20Speaker 1: this Nigel takets like no carefold when I'm done with it.
- 10:22Speaker 1: So you gotta put a lot of love until you do.
- 10:24Speaker 1: You need this burner turned up to a little bit.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Yeah we can. We can turn it up a little
- 10:30Speaker 1: bit so you don't have to add anything to refight beings.
- 10:33Speaker 1: You just have to heat it. You just gotta heat
- 10:34Speaker 1: him up. I just gotta heat him up. And that's
- 10:37Speaker 1: more sort of get a little bit smooth. Because you
- 10:39Speaker 1: see how it came out the can. Who were going
- 10:40Speaker 1: to eat that at the can? Like that? No definitely, No, not.
- 10:44Speaker 1: It has just enough fluid already where you don't have
- 10:47Speaker 1: to add anything. You know it's gonna get nice, nicest
- 10:52Speaker 1: move I always get I don't know enough about beings.
- 10:57Speaker 1: I always getting nervous cooking with ings because I don't
- 11:02Speaker 1: really know if they're like if it's like kind of
- 11:05Speaker 1: how you're doing it where you can heat it and
- 11:07Speaker 1: it becomes something you can eat. Yeah, it is. And
- 11:11Speaker 1: you're not gonna even beaut to tail. They wasn't. They
- 11:12Speaker 1: was out of the king. Let me get them that
- 11:15Speaker 1: can over here. To keep your work area clean, you
- 11:17Speaker 1: know you don't want to have a lot of stuff
- 11:19Speaker 1: going on. You want to keep your work area cleaning
- 11:21Speaker 1: to be safe. We are not responsible for anybody out
- 11:23Speaker 1: there that burns their fingers what they're doing this. And
- 11:26Speaker 1: you want to make sure whether you're using turkey. I
- 11:29Speaker 1: know me if I'm using turkey and ground beef, I
- 11:32Speaker 1: want this to be nice and brown when I get
- 11:34Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I want to be nice
- 11:35Speaker 1: and brown so I can have that flavor. And we're
- 11:37Speaker 1: using turkey today, ground turkey. For those health conscious people
- 11:41Speaker 1: out there, you know they want to get nice and
- 11:42Speaker 1: swol like me and then ultimate shaped like me and Kyleen.
- 11:46Speaker 1: I'm just joking. I need to lose a good thirty pound.
- 11:50Speaker 1: You know what, It's funny whenever you're in that twenty
- 11:53Speaker 1: thirty pound range, it's like a part of my brain.
- 11:55Speaker 1: When I'm trying to lose anything that's under twenty pounds,
- 11:57Speaker 1: it's like I'll get to it eventually, you know. But
- 12:01Speaker 1: I guess if it was like fifty or a pounds,
- 12:03Speaker 1: I feel like it would be a little bit more
- 12:04Speaker 1: urgency on losing it. Yeah, it is. I got to
- 12:06Speaker 1: give a shout out to my wife. She loses weight
- 12:10Speaker 1: and stays in shape better than anybody else. I know.
- 12:14Speaker 1: She's a pisketarian, which means she only eats fishy. Look,
- 12:18Speaker 1: I'm spilling stuff. So look, this can't get message because yea,
- 12:23Speaker 1: I'm gonna put some more cheese in there. And that's
- 12:25Speaker 1: that's the thing you want to put. You don't want
- 12:27Speaker 1: to start off with too much, but you want to
- 12:29Speaker 1: put just enough so you can add more into it
- 12:31Speaker 1: to your life. And I want this a little bit thicker, right,
- 12:34Speaker 1: So I'm gonna add some more cheese to this. You
- 12:38Speaker 1: cut me some cheese up right there. See, Look Kyleen
- 12:46Speaker 1: is pulling the double due to your day. It's the chef,
- 12:47Speaker 1: the big you know, his assistant to Chef Big. Still
- 12:50Speaker 1: just a little bit more, just so you know, I
- 12:53Speaker 1: actually don't co help. This is my first time. So
- 12:57Speaker 1: I hope you like these, uh col chef services. Is
- 13:00Speaker 1: that you're getting there perfect turn out? That way you
- 13:03Speaker 1: get some credit on the big steel of nachos. Then
- 13:05Speaker 1: you know there we go, tell your daughter to move over.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Watch out. Now you got another assistant on the scene.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Do you need more cheese? Let me get some more.
- 13:17Speaker 1: Your cheese looks cheesy. Yeah, we can turn this down
- 13:20Speaker 1: now now that we got this, is it right here?
- 13:23Speaker 1: Turn it down right here? Put this in there. So
- 13:25Speaker 1: we put you on a timer. So you have like
- 13:27Speaker 1: sixty seconds left. I'm trying to see if you can
- 13:30Speaker 1: make steals nachos in under ten minutes. Sixty seconds left,
- 13:34Speaker 1: sixty seconds. If he was on a cook I would lose.
- 13:39Speaker 1: I wouldn't you know what I wanted to be right, okay, okay,
- 13:42Speaker 1: I wanted to be I wanted to taste good. I
- 13:44Speaker 1: don't want you to look at him and you just
- 13:45Speaker 1: look good and see some of that stuff on these shows.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Look good, but it tastes nasty. You ever seen the
- 13:50Speaker 1: play the food it's played and they've got the nice
- 13:52Speaker 1: look garnishings and everything around it, but you even you're like, man,
- 13:55Speaker 1: what is this? Man? So it's like some stuff. They're
- 13:58Speaker 1: straight from the bottom of the pot of something, you
- 14:00Speaker 1: know when I cook it, when I cook. Actually, we
- 14:03Speaker 1: could turn this off right now. We go stirn this
- 14:05Speaker 1: in because we've got enough heat going on in there
- 14:07Speaker 1: right now. He on which one to meat? Right here?
- 14:11Speaker 1: You want to turn it off? Turn this off right here?
- 14:13Speaker 1: We're good. We just go turned off and stir. Okay,
- 14:16Speaker 1: And then do you want men to stir the beans? Yeah? Please,
- 14:19Speaker 1: you can stir the beans. That will make us even
- 14:21Speaker 1: help you. I don't know if it gets me off camera,
- 14:23Speaker 1: but I'm sure yeat that. Okay, beans looks stir ready.
- 14:31Speaker 1: So we just want to make sure those are nice
- 14:33Speaker 1: and warms. Do you typically add water to the beans
- 14:36Speaker 1: or do you let them be this thick? You know
- 14:38Speaker 1: what I'd like to add a little bit of water.
- 14:39Speaker 1: So what we could do today is I actually have
- 14:42Speaker 1: some water right here, break out of a little bit.
- 14:46Speaker 1: We want to add this a little bit, you know,
- 14:47Speaker 1: like we had a little bit, so want you stir
- 14:49Speaker 1: as our poor trying. Okay, that's good. I think that's cool. Yeah,
- 14:56Speaker 1: that's good. Yeah, okay, okay, I'm learning the bean game
- 14:59Speaker 1: now because it gets them a little bit smooth that
- 15:02Speaker 1: way when you're putting them on the nachos, they're not
- 15:04Speaker 1: all just clumped up in one place. And when to
- 15:06Speaker 1: eat the nacho, be like, man, I got all beans
- 15:07Speaker 1: on your ain't getting no meat early? You want to
- 15:10Speaker 1: make sure your stuff. You see how the cheese and smooth.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Now she's a moving now seeing we are actually now
- 15:18Speaker 1: what we do. We can actually start plating our noxios. Okay, okay,
- 15:23Speaker 1: I get it, I got it. Not can do that
- 15:25Speaker 1: if you want to what we're gonna play that for
- 15:29Speaker 1: a nacho we play that we're using we could use
- 15:31Speaker 1: this well, I didn't know if you're gonna qut and
- 15:35Speaker 1: do the whole nacho thing or if you want to
- 15:37Speaker 1: do like, well, you know what, let's put them on
- 15:39Speaker 1: a plate that way, they're even down. You know what
- 15:41Speaker 1: I mean that even now we could play them. We
- 15:43Speaker 1: could we could do yeah, go ahead, okay, and everybody
- 15:47Speaker 1: can eat over there, okay, and just you gonna do
- 15:52Speaker 1: so you want to do that. That's how we do it.
- 15:53Speaker 1: That's how we do it on our shows. Okay, cool, perfect, okay,
- 15:56Speaker 1: at na, Let's get some more chips on there on
- 16:00Speaker 1: both of them. Might spread them out if you might
- 16:04Speaker 1: have some of the food, may want to eat something,
- 16:07Speaker 1: you know what I mean? All right, So we got
- 16:09Speaker 1: a good looking nacho plate. Good, all right? So now
- 16:12Speaker 1: what do we add next? Alright? So we go turn
- 16:14Speaker 1: these off right now, we're done. We're done with these
- 16:17Speaker 1: right here, all right. The first thing we're going to
- 16:20Speaker 1: add now, right now is our beans. We're gonna add beans,
- 16:25Speaker 1: then we're gonna add our cheese. Then we're gonna add
- 16:27Speaker 1: everything else from top of it, because those are two
- 16:30Speaker 1: hottest things, right but you add meeting Okay, okay, let
- 16:35Speaker 1: me sit back and watch some magic. Alright, So the
- 16:38Speaker 1: taking parts done, everybody, The cooking part is there, and
- 16:42Speaker 1: everything is turned up. I want to make sure but
- 16:44Speaker 1: these are still hot again, everybody at home and it's
- 16:47Speaker 1: still all and be careful. I want to hear about
- 16:49Speaker 1: nobody's fingers getting burnt off. We want to do this.
- 16:54Speaker 1: We want to have it to where it's like uh
- 16:56Speaker 1: a saucy type, a nice and sautage like right, all right,
- 17:01Speaker 1: you want to be kind of right to where you
- 17:03Speaker 1: spread them around a little bit, to where you spread
- 17:06Speaker 1: them around to where it's like because you want to
- 17:08Speaker 1: taste hopefully a little bit of everything and everybody right
- 17:14Speaker 1: and right there to see. What I usually do is
- 17:23Speaker 1: tossing nachos up, So it would be kind of like
- 17:27Speaker 1: to like you do it in a bag or something. Yeah,
- 17:31Speaker 1: you can do it with your hands, however, you because
- 17:32Speaker 1: these don't be your noxial, so you could do however
- 17:35Speaker 1: you want to. But I wouldn't be wanting nobody putting
- 17:37Speaker 1: their hands in my noxial. No, no, pick your one
- 17:40Speaker 1: chip and exit the plate exactly. That's the name of
- 17:44Speaker 1: the game when you share nochals, right, you don't be
- 17:47Speaker 1: all around your plate. I do that this squak on that,
- 17:50Speaker 1: or I'll reach Oldren, you know, and we could ask.
- 17:52Speaker 1: You could definitely ask some so I get it, yeah,
- 17:56Speaker 1: because everybody may not beautiful that, you know, wacamole is
- 17:59Speaker 1: sometimes I'm to be expensive depending on the seasons. Then,
- 18:03Speaker 1: So we got enough of that right now. Perfect. The
- 18:06Speaker 1: next thing the cheese. The next thing we're doing is
- 18:08Speaker 1: the cheese right here right then, before the meat, don't
- 18:13Speaker 1: after that. Put the meat on right there. See your
- 18:17Speaker 1: smooth that he is right there. See your smooth that
- 18:19Speaker 1: he is right there. That looks great. You pour it
- 18:22Speaker 1: on there, and you know you want to have a
- 18:25Speaker 1: little bit everywhere, nice and cheese, and you know nice
- 18:29Speaker 1: and cheese. You wonna put this on there. Season Staline
- 18:36Speaker 1: is the whole. I'm gonna make hook it up and
- 18:37Speaker 1: make sure she got cheese and every sector and every crevice. Well,
- 18:42Speaker 1: you know what, I don't be a host up asking
- 18:45Speaker 1: you a lot of questions and a little bit soft,
- 18:49Speaker 1: too cold. Then we start off with me started at
- 18:55Speaker 1: the meeting there. We want this to be nice and green,
- 19:00Speaker 1: know to where you don't have two big, bigger clumps.
- 19:04Speaker 1: This looks really good. It's conuld be the bond. I'm
- 19:07Speaker 1: one of those people that I go to a Taco Bell. Well,
- 19:10Speaker 1: I used to go to Taco bell a lot and
- 19:11Speaker 1: my order was always the Naturals Bell grand Day. I
- 19:14Speaker 1: was like my go to these killing the next bill
- 19:17Speaker 1: grand Day. It's kind of like, uh, you can make
- 19:20Speaker 1: these and mikes you want to. You can put the
- 19:21Speaker 1: guacamole on it, you can put the side with cream
- 19:24Speaker 1: and see now what we're doing right now. We got
- 19:29Speaker 1: some of these right there, We got some sauce. We
- 19:31Speaker 1: always want to make sure. I opened it a little
- 19:33Speaker 1: bit so it's cool. I mean it's going to spill
- 19:36Speaker 1: that when you shake it. It's what I got my
- 19:39Speaker 1: hand over the top. Problem problem. Oh yeah, we're not
- 19:58Speaker 1: playing those games in here to day. So how often
- 20:01Speaker 1: would you eat this? You know what? The last time
- 20:04Speaker 1: I had these was maybe probably a month and a
- 20:07Speaker 1: half ago. It's not something not eat every day because
- 20:10Speaker 1: this can it's good, but it's something that they can
- 20:16Speaker 1: kind of get you one bigger. Oh yeah, you can
- 20:19Speaker 1: get gain weight eating if you definitely go gain some weight,
- 20:21Speaker 1: you eat notchos. Everything especially not was like this. I
- 20:24Speaker 1: mean this thing was beautiful with the red. Okay, so
- 20:26Speaker 1: we added the salsa. The lapenos are optional, Yeah, the
- 20:29Speaker 1: healepinios optional. I'm going to skip the jalepenos. See she's
- 20:34Speaker 1: gonna skip the helopineos. I'm gonna put a couple of
- 20:36Speaker 1: them on there, and we gotta fork right here. I
- 20:38Speaker 1: don't want to hold a bunch of them. I don't
- 20:42Speaker 1: want to hold a bunch of them. Hold on. I
- 20:43Speaker 1: forgot almost kind about this right here to trust the
- 20:46Speaker 1: sour cream. Sour cream is stick and just for show purposes,
- 20:56Speaker 1: We'll put you some clumps around there. You can always do.
- 21:00Speaker 1: We'll put you some cloth. This smells and looks way
- 21:03Speaker 1: better than my Natural's bell grande on this show, I
- 21:06Speaker 1: have so many guys to be like. I want you
- 21:08Speaker 1: to try you first, like no, no, no no, we
- 21:10Speaker 1: tried to get it. I found me a perfect one
- 21:12Speaker 1: with a nice combination of salta cheese and everything else.
- 21:17Speaker 1: It's too good, outstanding. First of all, I gotta get
- 21:30Speaker 1: it with the cheese on it. This is outstanding. You
- 21:36Speaker 1: want me too, I can always chase Hell yeah, hell yeah.
- 21:41Speaker 1: So let me just tell you listeners about this cheese.
- 21:46Speaker 1: I've had the natural cheese in a can, definitely nasty,
- 21:51Speaker 1: compared to this cheese. I've never had velveted cheese. I've
- 21:55Speaker 1: never even thought to mix it with carnation milk. But
- 21:57Speaker 1: this cheese is amazing. That's the key doing Nation new.
- 22:01Speaker 1: The flavor is absolutely nuts. I wish I could take
- 22:06Speaker 1: this home without it, like getting the chip soggy. Well,
- 22:09Speaker 1: you know, we're usually what we would do is I
- 22:15Speaker 1: would get a big like kind of flatter tree, spread
- 22:18Speaker 1: the noxios across there, and I would put the beans
- 22:21Speaker 1: on there, and I would I wear plastic lives and cooking.
- 22:24Speaker 1: I would kind of just you don't want to tear
- 22:25Speaker 1: the nachos up, but she would kind of just to wear.
- 22:28Speaker 1: So everybody that you give is like, um, an experience
- 22:33Speaker 1: and experience. You've got all these different flavors of explosion
- 22:35Speaker 1: and flavors in here and seeing. The thing is, I
- 22:39Speaker 1: can't stress how amazing these nachos are. Like, Jared, I
- 22:43Speaker 1: wish you'd come over and eat some of the drill Katie, huh,
- 22:49Speaker 1: we have plenty of them at the words, you have
- 22:53Speaker 1: plenty for them. After words, UM, this is amazing, all right?
- 22:57Speaker 1: My last bit? And then I can they're addictive and
- 23:02Speaker 1: that's why you don't eat these every day because you
- 23:04Speaker 1: have missed round. It's kind of like almost made my
- 23:08Speaker 1: fried deviled eggs. What. So let me just tell you
- 23:12Speaker 1: a little backstory. So Norm and I have been trying
- 23:14Speaker 1: to tape with each other for months. Norm, come on,
- 23:18Speaker 1: we're trying to work our schedules together. Then I was like, Norm,
- 23:22Speaker 1: what do you want to make? His first option for me?
- 23:24Speaker 1: Everybody was meat loaf, and I was like, he was like,
- 23:27Speaker 1: have you ever had meat loaf? I'm like, uh, if
- 23:29Speaker 1: I did, I don't think I ever remember the experience.
- 23:31Speaker 1: But I didn't want meat loaf. And I was like,
- 23:34Speaker 1: I'm sure, norm you have something else. He was like, oh,
- 23:36Speaker 1: what about these nachos? And I was like, that's a
- 23:38Speaker 1: great idea. But now while we're here, you offer me
- 23:43Speaker 1: deviled eggs. Deviled eggs. I've never had that. It's like,
- 23:50Speaker 1: those are pretty much like the traditional deviled eggs, except
- 23:54Speaker 1: you got a twist on him. You couldn't egg whites,
- 23:57Speaker 1: and half couldn't and they have you put your arm,
- 24:00Speaker 1: You're you're yoking the boat right when it's done, when
- 24:03Speaker 1: it's cooked right, You take those halves, You're dip them
- 24:06Speaker 1: in a little bit of flour. Then you dip them
- 24:08Speaker 1: in some egg white. Then you put them in the
- 24:10Speaker 1: bread crumbs read crimebs. You put them in the skill
- 24:13Speaker 1: of deep friar hope it with a little um, one
- 24:16Speaker 1: of the little scoops. Put them in there, maybe ten seconds,
- 24:20Speaker 1: take them out, but I'm driving. You know, paper towels, napkins,
- 24:23Speaker 1: you know the absorb the oil. Then you know like
- 24:28Speaker 1: traditional devil the eggs. You put the eggs in the basket,
- 24:31Speaker 1: whip them up, put some miracle whip in there, some
- 24:33Speaker 1: sweet relish, nice sweeting tank. You relish a little bit
- 24:36Speaker 1: of a little bit of you know, kayenne, just a
- 24:38Speaker 1: little taste of cayenne pepper, just so it has that
- 24:40Speaker 1: little bite to him. Then you want to get the bacon,
- 24:44Speaker 1: but you want a specific kind of bacon. You want
- 24:46Speaker 1: the bacon that has um, like the sweet bacon, like
- 24:50Speaker 1: the hickory with the hickory tasting, or you can put
- 24:52Speaker 1: a cheat them, even put a little bit of syrup
- 24:54Speaker 1: on when you're cooking the bacon. Right, that's a whole
- 24:57Speaker 1: another story though, I was gonna say, um, when you
- 25:01Speaker 1: come back, fire devil eggs will be the option. I
- 25:04Speaker 1: definitely well hooked at up those take long. You can't
- 25:06Speaker 1: be putting me under those stipulations with that college. These
- 25:09Speaker 1: naturs are amazing. But I really want to know your
- 25:12Speaker 1: backstory on how you got to gangster chronicles and where
- 25:16Speaker 1: you're at today. Now, you said you were in college
- 25:18Speaker 1: when you were eating these, So tell me like a
- 25:22Speaker 1: little bit about your background, Like what were you doing
- 25:25Speaker 1: in college? Well, I'm originally from Cleveland, Ohio, and I
- 25:28Speaker 1: was a guy like a lot of other athletes, especially
- 25:30Speaker 1: in that area, to where I didn't have the academic
- 25:34Speaker 1: portion together out of high school. So a lot of
- 25:37Speaker 1: opportunities I had coming out of high school I couldn't
- 25:39Speaker 1: take advantage of because I've had a great So I
- 25:42Speaker 1: wound up coming out here to long Be City College.
- 25:44Speaker 1: There was the choice between either me coming here to
- 25:47Speaker 1: a tend school or going to coffee Ville in Kansas.
- 25:50Speaker 1: And they actually had scholarships and coffee Field, Kansas dorms
- 25:53Speaker 1: and everything. But anybody that knows about Coffeeville, Kansas knows
- 25:57Speaker 1: it's not exactly the sexiest destination and the planet. So
- 26:01Speaker 1: I chose to come out here to California. Came out
- 26:03Speaker 1: here when I was seventeen years old. Um, thanks to
- 26:08Speaker 1: coach weal Shaw good mentor mind steal the manness in
- 26:11Speaker 1: my life that day. Me and his son are best friends.
- 26:13Speaker 1: So I played football at Longbe City College, who there
- 26:15Speaker 1: got a scholarship to New Mexico State University. UM. I
- 26:19Speaker 1: met my wife when I was at Longbe City College.
- 26:21Speaker 1: So I wound up twin around playing professional football in
- 26:24Speaker 1: the CFL and Arena Football League for a few years.
- 26:27Speaker 1: That really wasn't my thing. So I came back. You know,
- 26:31Speaker 1: I had a son already, so I wanted to be
- 26:33Speaker 1: in my son's life. And it's not like I was
- 26:34Speaker 1: making millions of dollars playing arena football, so I had
- 26:37Speaker 1: to make a choice. I came home and started kind
- 26:39Speaker 1: of integrating into the real world. Always had a love
- 26:43Speaker 1: for music. You know, my family food musicians, right, So
- 26:47Speaker 1: I was always had this love for music. So I
- 26:50Speaker 1: wound up somehow through one of my friends, Mario, he
- 26:53Speaker 1: could add them. I wound up getting involved in the
- 26:55Speaker 1: music business distribution. At first, UM we were going out
- 26:59Speaker 1: to some conventions, you know, conventions that they had back then,
- 27:02Speaker 1: sex as Jack the Rapper and all this different stuff.
- 27:05Speaker 1: And then we wound up going out to a convention
- 27:07Speaker 1: called mid Him that's where all the distributors meet up worldwide.
- 27:10Speaker 1: From there, I met one of my um like the
- 27:13Speaker 1: guy that would become a mentor to me and the
- 27:15Speaker 1: music industry, Dim run Pillow from the UK. Wound up
- 27:19Speaker 1: doing a lot of business with them. So I started
- 27:21Speaker 1: distributing a lot of records here from United States overseas.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Our company did two million dollars our first year. And
- 27:28Speaker 1: you when you say our company like your own, your
- 27:31Speaker 1: own company. We had our own distributors, We had our
- 27:33Speaker 1: own distributors. We were distributing the albums. We were distributing
- 27:35Speaker 1: the dog Pounds albums through my boy big A. Shoutut
- 27:38Speaker 1: to my partner, big A. We were doing Dad's Dear
- 27:41Speaker 1: Luxury Corrupt all those guys overseas and I haven't heard
- 27:45Speaker 1: so long. But then what happened was we had this
- 27:48Speaker 1: strange little thing to where the record company started kind
- 27:52Speaker 1: of tripping on people selling. Look, it's called mixtapes. That's
- 27:55Speaker 1: when you had the whole thing that went down with
- 27:57Speaker 1: DJ's drama. And even though we were selling legal you know,
- 28:01Speaker 1: we were selling legal content. We wouldn't bootleg enough. And
- 28:03Speaker 1: these release artists albums. The record companies was like, man,
- 28:05Speaker 1: we're not getting our cut off that ship. So they
- 28:07Speaker 1: started shifting everything down. So wait, how are you able
- 28:10Speaker 1: to get the record without the label? You were selling
- 28:13Speaker 1: legal records, but but you were getting the material from
- 28:17Speaker 1: the artist without from the artists, but without the labels involvement,
- 28:20Speaker 1: without the labels involving, you know, the average artists only
- 28:23Speaker 1: is getting the CD. So they got to try to
- 28:26Speaker 1: find ways outside of touring and make money. So we
- 28:29Speaker 1: were doing this stuff, and I was doing some other
- 28:31Speaker 1: people that were independent to those weren't the problem that
- 28:33Speaker 1: one the stuff that was selling a bunch of records
- 28:35Speaker 1: was the stuff that came from the record companies. So
- 28:38Speaker 1: I kind of started writing on the wall with that.
- 28:40Speaker 1: But through me starting to release more material that was
- 28:45Speaker 1: kind of proprietary to me. I was clearing the sample
- 28:48Speaker 1: one day and I called this company Mind of Music, Hey,
- 28:50Speaker 1: we want to get this sample clear. You know we're
- 28:52Speaker 1: gonna pay to get the sample clear. They started asking
- 28:55Speaker 1: a bunch of questions like well, who is the artist?
- 28:58Speaker 1: Who is this? Who wrote this? Who wrote that? And
- 29:00Speaker 1: I was like, well I did this and I did that.
- 29:03Speaker 1: So they wound up needing when me in l A
- 29:05Speaker 1: and we wound up doing a publishing deal. I was
- 29:08Speaker 1: a writer and that was your first publishing. Yeah, so
- 29:11Speaker 1: I did want to doing the publishing with them. On
- 29:13Speaker 1: top of that, they told me some goals that they
- 29:16Speaker 1: had as far as expanding into a United States because
- 29:18Speaker 1: this company had a huge catalog. They had like the
- 29:21Speaker 1: regional rights to like the fall some of the Beatles
- 29:24Speaker 1: catalog so they had, you know, the Gap band. They
- 29:27Speaker 1: had a lot of catalog, right, So we wound up
- 29:30Speaker 1: happing deals from near They said, hey, norm, we want
- 29:33Speaker 1: to open up office here in the States. Would you
- 29:36Speaker 1: run that office? But but you're at this point you're
- 29:39Speaker 1: assigned to them as almost like an artist right as
- 29:42Speaker 1: a as a writer. So and then to backtrack just
- 29:47Speaker 1: a little bit, can you break down what a publishing
- 29:49Speaker 1: deal looks like to just the average listener? Well, the
- 29:52Speaker 1: publishing deal is someone they come to you. It could
- 29:55Speaker 1: be you. You can come to someone and say, hey,
- 29:59Speaker 1: I want to partend is paid in your publishing rights.
- 30:02Speaker 1: I'm going to advance you a certain amount of money
- 30:04Speaker 1: based on what I think it was your worth. They
- 30:06Speaker 1: may say, okay, i'm gonna give you two and fifty
- 30:09Speaker 1: dollars and we're going to share in. We're gonna do
- 30:12Speaker 1: a co pub deal, which means mean you're going straight
- 30:14Speaker 1: down the middle. You get twenty five percent and I
- 30:16Speaker 1: get you get fifty percent. And in turn, they're usually
- 30:22Speaker 1: people that are able to take your music to different
- 30:24Speaker 1: places to work those assets. So I wounded up working
- 30:29Speaker 1: with them maybe six years. Um I wanted up coming
- 30:32Speaker 1: the head of Urban music Um. The first record that
- 30:37Speaker 1: we actually got placed wind up going platinum. It was
- 30:39Speaker 1: ice cream paying job. Shout out to my little partner
- 30:42Speaker 1: two months. That was the first producer I ever signed.
- 30:45Speaker 1: He wind up going platinum at the gate Um. But
- 30:48Speaker 1: I started having issues with the publishing company because I
- 30:52Speaker 1: brought some artists in there that I feelt could have
- 30:54Speaker 1: been a really revolutionized music. I brought Kendrick Lamar and
- 30:57Speaker 1: when he was just going by, they see no. I thought,
- 31:01Speaker 1: actually all the TV in there, they told me no.
- 31:04Speaker 1: So I kind of was feeling some kind of way
- 31:05Speaker 1: about that because I said, well, you know, you give
- 31:07Speaker 1: me this job, you're not giving me the support to it.
- 31:13Speaker 1: I pretty much had a pin with no ink. They
- 31:16Speaker 1: let me do too much because that deal was cheap
- 31:20Speaker 1: in comparison, and TD wasn't asking for a whole lot
- 31:22Speaker 1: of money at that time, not comparing it what you
- 31:24Speaker 1: would have got. Yeah, you know that we did that deal,
- 31:26Speaker 1: we would all probably be sitting on top of the
- 31:28Speaker 1: hills somewhere. So they so you ended up walking. I
- 31:33Speaker 1: ended up walking, and I was young back then, the
- 31:35Speaker 1: kind of arrogant. If I had to do all over again,
- 31:37Speaker 1: I would handled it a little differently. But yea, I
- 31:39Speaker 1: wound up walking away. Now when you say arrogant, was
- 31:42Speaker 1: do you feel like you probably took over? And you
- 31:44Speaker 1: were like, I can I come make money on my own?
- 31:47Speaker 1: So I'm good. It was one of those things. And
- 31:50Speaker 1: I had a lot of people at that time offered
- 31:52Speaker 1: me jobs in other houses like I had. Cobalt offered
- 31:54Speaker 1: me a job. I had, Bug Music offered me a job.
- 31:58Speaker 1: I had different like you know, from publishing companies off
- 32:01Speaker 1: from me a job because everybody wants the black guy
- 32:04Speaker 1: that's connected to the streets, you know, they want the
- 32:06Speaker 1: black guy that can go to anybody's studio session and
- 32:09Speaker 1: just kind of pop up. And they were willing to support.
- 32:12Speaker 1: But what I didn't know was you're only good for
- 32:15Speaker 1: one of those other jobs when you're working at the job.
- 32:18Speaker 1: Once you're gone, they don't know if you got fired,
- 32:21Speaker 1: they don't know what it is. They're not trying to
- 32:22Speaker 1: investigate why. So all those same people that was blowing
- 32:25Speaker 1: up my phone, you know, five six months earlier, they
- 32:28Speaker 1: wasn't around no more. So I had to figure out
- 32:30Speaker 1: some stuff. So what I started doing is my friend
- 32:35Speaker 1: at that time, Glasses my loan. He was hot as
- 32:39Speaker 1: fish recent the streets like he was hot, he was
- 32:42Speaker 1: m He was in Games camp at the time. He
- 32:44Speaker 1: was running around the Black Wall Street camp. So and
- 32:47Speaker 1: me and him were always friends. I started helping him
- 32:49Speaker 1: more and more because he was knew he was an
- 32:52Speaker 1: incredible rapper, but he didn't know the song writing. So
- 32:57Speaker 1: Glasses had this situation. He was running around with Black
- 33:00Speaker 1: Off Street with Game and them, and he became the
- 33:02Speaker 1: hottest guy in the streets. Like he had a song
- 33:05Speaker 1: called three hundred that went crazy on the ready and
- 33:07Speaker 1: at that time his brother who was managing them and
- 33:10Speaker 1: um he was signed to Sony. He has signed a
- 33:12Speaker 1: million dollar deal with Sony Music and m Sony One.
- 33:18Speaker 1: They decided that they were getting rid of their urban department.
- 33:20Speaker 1: He had an album that was already completely done finished.
- 33:24Speaker 1: You know, White left Gene a whole bunch of different
- 33:27Speaker 1: people on their many fresh on the production DJ to
- 33:30Speaker 1: you know, we had a real album. So in the
- 33:33Speaker 1: process of the label decided he was getting rid of
- 33:35Speaker 1: the Urban music department. He became a free agent. They
- 33:37Speaker 1: let him walk away with the money in the album.
- 33:40Speaker 1: So there was a lot of people calling and so
- 33:44Speaker 1: mat Ten from Cat from on who banging records. He
- 33:48Speaker 1: wanted to sign Glasses, but he wanted to do it
- 33:50Speaker 1: with cash money records, and we thought, you know what,
- 33:53Speaker 1: we got somebody from the west still kind of the
- 33:56Speaker 1: picture versus let's just dealing directly with cash money. So
- 33:59Speaker 1: we did that deal and it turned out good. Burdman
- 34:01Speaker 1: paid everything that Birdman and Mac took care of us.
- 34:04Speaker 1: It wasn't. None of the descripancies that we hear about
- 34:07Speaker 1: what the other artists or whatever? Did you own most
- 34:11Speaker 1: of your publishing or did you have glass is always
- 34:14Speaker 1: on this punty public and we didn't. I made sure
- 34:16Speaker 1: that we didn't do those deals unless they was coming
- 34:18Speaker 1: with a bunch of money. So the cool part of
- 34:21Speaker 1: Batty was we winds up signing the cash money. Now,
- 34:24Speaker 1: remember I told you earlier about Glasses and this record
- 34:27Speaker 1: making ability. One of the greatest rappers in the world
- 34:30Speaker 1: at that time. But song structural wist. He has dope songs,
- 34:35Speaker 1: but you know you're trying to, you know, hit on
- 34:37Speaker 1: some trakes ship. You didn't trying to come out and
- 34:39Speaker 1: just have some ship that's right here. You want to
- 34:41Speaker 1: go right here. So he got a lot better at
- 34:44Speaker 1: what it was he was doing in a situation with
- 34:47Speaker 1: cash Money didn't quite work out because they were talking
- 34:50Speaker 1: about pushing the album back, and at that time the
- 34:53Speaker 1: Glasses didn't don't know better, none of us knew any better.
- 34:57Speaker 1: We probably should have just deal with their asses to
- 34:58Speaker 1: him push the record back. Glasses like, no, I want
- 35:02Speaker 1: to I want my record to come out. I want
- 35:04Speaker 1: to release. So we wound up getting to release from
- 35:06Speaker 1: cash Money and wanted up release an album to somebody else.
- 35:09Speaker 1: Even though it was technically steal through cash Money, it
- 35:12Speaker 1: wasn't through the universe anymore through somebody else, So that
- 35:14Speaker 1: album did would have did I think we might have
- 35:16Speaker 1: wound up doing fifty thousand units, which is not that much,
- 35:20Speaker 1: you know for the caliper of artist he was. But
- 35:23Speaker 1: that kind of took us through, like this soul searching
- 35:26Speaker 1: period to where we really start locking in the studio.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Like Glasses want to learn how to play the bass guitar.
- 35:32Speaker 1: He learned how to play the guitar. He really got
- 35:34Speaker 1: in his music, started playing drums. Would you say at
- 35:37Speaker 1: that point you guys hit Do you think you hit
- 35:39Speaker 1: like a kind of rock bottom when or was it
- 35:42Speaker 1: like a reality check? Because you're it sounds like you
- 35:45Speaker 1: guys were like so confident, and then the record, you know,
- 35:49Speaker 1: you you went against you went against cash Money's decision,
- 35:52Speaker 1: and then the reality was the record didn't do as
- 35:55Speaker 1: well as the record didn't do as well when if
- 35:57Speaker 1: we were listening to Baby Team, we'd have been find
- 36:00Speaker 1: And you think, do you think at that point it
- 36:03Speaker 1: was a timing thing or do you think it was
- 36:05Speaker 1: like the record just wasn't there, or maybe he went
- 36:08Speaker 1: with the wrong single. What the thing was, we didn't
- 36:11Speaker 1: have no records there. We was trying to guess. It's
- 36:13Speaker 1: like we had dope records. Don't get me wrong. These
- 36:15Speaker 1: records were incredible, but they weren't records that fitting Glasses Lane.
- 36:20Speaker 1: Like last I was still trying to figure out who
- 36:22Speaker 1: he was as an artist. Like so, you know, when
- 36:24Speaker 1: you're looking at everybody else this popum, when you look
- 36:26Speaker 1: at Tune, which is Wayne, what works for Wayne ain't
- 36:30Speaker 1: necessarily work for Lashes and Wayne had a people look
- 36:35Speaker 1: at Wayne now, but Wayne has been around for such
- 36:36Speaker 1: a long time, it was and he went through an
- 36:39Speaker 1: evolution process as an artist himself exactly. And Wayne was
- 36:42Speaker 1: going stupid at that time. It's like, I remember we
- 36:44Speaker 1: went to Vegas to for the Lollipop video, and I
- 36:49Speaker 1: remember Birdman just standing on the side of the bus saying, yeah,
- 36:52Speaker 1: Wayne sold a million copies this week, and I was
- 36:54Speaker 1: just like, God, damn, this dude is actually the baddest
- 36:57Speaker 1: motherfucker on the planet right now. And Wayne is just
- 37:00Speaker 1: such a cool motherfucker. He's not m how are we
- 37:03Speaker 1: in here talking about? Now? That's how win niels. He's
- 37:05Speaker 1: gonna come by and introduced himself to you and shake
- 37:08Speaker 1: your hand, shake your hand, or douce himself. He's gonna
- 37:10Speaker 1: shake everybody in your hand, and he's gonna treat everybody
- 37:13Speaker 1: from the janitor to the manager to place the same way.
- 37:16Speaker 1: I So I used to have a magazine and I
- 37:19Speaker 1: had the opportunity to a little way, and I think
- 37:22Speaker 1: dropped the Lollipop record around that time, And I remember
- 37:26Speaker 1: I worked a lot with Universal Records, but I do
- 37:28Speaker 1: remember it being like, if you wanted to interview Wayne,
- 37:32Speaker 1: it was completely up to Wayne, like they had no
- 37:35Speaker 1: control over anything that that camp did. It was just
- 37:39Speaker 1: kind of like they were so thankful to even be
- 37:41Speaker 1: able to distribute. They just didn't mess with the process.
- 37:44Speaker 1: But I could not get Wayne unless I had a
- 37:47Speaker 1: Wayne direct contact. At the time, it was like you
- 37:50Speaker 1: couldn't go through a label. The book an interview with
- 37:53Speaker 1: Tune is doing what Tune want to do? Is the man?
- 37:57Speaker 1: Yeah he was. It was yeah. It wasn't even option
- 37:59Speaker 1: they did even they were just like, yeah, we don't.
- 38:01Speaker 1: We don't have because it's not like he needs to
- 38:03Speaker 1: cover your magazine. It's not like he needs you to
- 38:05Speaker 1: play a song on the radio. If you look at
- 38:07Speaker 1: if you look at Wayne's influence today on the music industry,
- 38:12Speaker 1: you have what's the kid's name, the kid from Philly's name. Well, no,
- 38:19Speaker 1: you don't even talk about younger rappers now. First of all,
- 38:23Speaker 1: I don't. I don't even listen to the Mumble rappers
- 38:27Speaker 1: star I do not you the guy that had that song,
- 38:34Speaker 1: short guy, he has a big record. Anyway, if you
- 38:37Speaker 1: look at everybody, the kids from Philly, I think, if
- 38:41Speaker 1: you look at everybody from young Thug to the other
- 38:45Speaker 1: rappers day, everybody has Wayne's influence written all over. But Wayne,
- 38:50Speaker 1: I would say that, But Wayne is I don't. I
- 38:53Speaker 1: don't even consider him a rapper. He is a full string.
- 38:57Speaker 1: He's he's almost on the level of her right now.
- 38:59Speaker 1: Or he really is all encompassing art music. Yeah, he
- 39:06Speaker 1: different instruments, like he's he's his own body of art. Yeah.
- 39:09Speaker 1: The only guy I know they can even compare to
- 39:12Speaker 1: him kind of like as a level on the level
- 39:14Speaker 1: of artistry he's on, it's probably Kendrick. And Kendrick is
- 39:18Speaker 1: a guy I've known since he was sixteen years old,
- 39:20Speaker 1: and I saw him go through his evolution, but he
- 39:22Speaker 1: just figured it out hell of early. Like I remember
- 39:25Speaker 1: one day he was in the studio when he made
- 39:26Speaker 1: that transition. He was over a top Dog studio in Carson.
- 39:29Speaker 1: They had a studio behind the house that was just
- 39:31Speaker 1: in the back, and I remember him saying one day, like,
- 39:34Speaker 1: because he went through a period where he was sounding
- 39:36Speaker 1: just like Wayne for it, man, he was releasing mixtapes
- 39:38Speaker 1: and he sounds just like Wayne. And he said one
- 39:40Speaker 1: day like, you know what, I'm just gonna be Kentried,
- 39:44Speaker 1: Like I'm gonna be who I am, and his music
- 39:46Speaker 1: just kind of exchanged. And he was always incredible, but
- 39:48Speaker 1: then you saw him just kind of just go It's
- 39:51Speaker 1: just like it's some special people. So being around these
- 39:54Speaker 1: special people, Glasses said, Man, I want to be one
- 39:56Speaker 1: of these special people. So he really just evolved like
- 40:01Speaker 1: on this level, and he has a level of truth
- 40:03Speaker 1: and honesty to his records that may piss some people off,
- 40:06Speaker 1: Like when we did the two part Much Die record.
- 40:09Speaker 1: For those that really didn't listen to the record, there
- 40:11Speaker 1: was a lot of people pissed off about the records.
- 40:13Speaker 1: They were just off a long. But when Glasses realized
- 40:17Speaker 1: that that it has to be more than just a
- 40:19Speaker 1: song and the story or nobody is gonna look at it,
- 40:21Speaker 1: listen to it, nobody's gonna pay attention to the video,
- 40:24Speaker 1: nobody's gonna look at it. So even if you look
- 40:27Speaker 1: at his last single, Kanye shouldn't have married that bitch
- 40:31Speaker 1: the language, but he knew that would catch people's attention
- 40:36Speaker 1: even though it wasn't. Then they're really degrading offer Kim
- 40:39Speaker 1: or whatever. It was just a song about the scandals
- 40:40Speaker 1: as girl and he tiled Kane, so he figured out
- 40:44Speaker 1: the whole thing. Like, if Glasses wasn't a rapper, I
- 40:47Speaker 1: think in another life he would probably be one of
- 40:49Speaker 1: the biggest marketing guys in the company Sound Problem. So
- 41:08Speaker 1: at this point you're managing Glasses, all right, So then
- 41:12Speaker 1: how do we get all the way I'm trying to
- 41:14Speaker 1: get to where you're This is all the story, so
- 41:19Speaker 1: me managing Glasses and figuring out who he was as
- 41:21Speaker 1: a man. He's an opinion they to do and he's
- 41:24Speaker 1: a contrarian as well. Anything you have to say, he's
- 41:27Speaker 1: gonna have an argument against it or maybe for but
- 41:30Speaker 1: he's gonna really and he's gonna debate. You want an
- 41:32Speaker 1: intellectual capacity, he's We don't deal with emotion. We're just
- 41:36Speaker 1: gonna take the truth straight out. This is what it is. Right.
- 41:39Speaker 1: So with that being said, I started really getting big
- 41:42Speaker 1: in the talk radio. I was listening to a lot
- 41:44Speaker 1: of talk radio, you know, just because when you work
- 41:47Speaker 1: in the music and it for you don't want to
- 41:48Speaker 1: hear music, or you love music, but you just want
- 41:51Speaker 1: to get away from that ship. So I started listening
- 41:53Speaker 1: to a lot of different people and I said, Glasses,
- 41:56Speaker 1: I heard this thing people are doing called the podcast.
- 41:59Speaker 1: And at this time they were probably only like thirty
- 42:01Speaker 1: or forty people doing podcasts. You figured this is maybe
- 42:05Speaker 1: this is maybe two thousand and eighteen, and we're like, man,
- 42:09Speaker 1: So we wanted to talk to your boy Ski over
- 42:11Speaker 1: at m J Ski because Ski had com Steve has
- 42:18Speaker 1: a company called um, he has this little app that
- 42:21Speaker 1: he has. Right, So we were up their recording Glasses podcast.
- 42:25Speaker 1: Of course, Glasses didn't do it consistently. We would do
- 42:28Speaker 1: one or two episodes. Then I come show up to
- 42:30Speaker 1: this law to do it and he wouldn't be there.
- 42:33Speaker 1: Just wait for me, Bro, I'll beat him thirty minutes,
- 42:35Speaker 1: thirty minutes termed to two hours. You know how you
- 42:37Speaker 1: we use Glasses, but with Right now, I'm hoping we
- 42:41Speaker 1: can la. These will come in trust me. So we
- 42:46Speaker 1: go through this thing where we're doing these podcasts, right
- 42:49Speaker 1: and Glasses podcasts. Actually it was called The Unpopular Opinion,
- 42:54Speaker 1: and it actually started catching people. But then we went
- 42:56Speaker 1: on this hiatus with it. Then that's when I see it.
- 42:58Speaker 1: You know what fun this? I went full on the
- 43:01Speaker 1: podcast and I decided to start Digital Soapbox Media. At
- 43:06Speaker 1: that time, I didn't really want to do a podcast.
- 43:08Speaker 1: I had plans on doing one, but I wanted to
- 43:11Speaker 1: get this off the ground. I was like, I figured
- 43:13Speaker 1: out the business model of it, right. So I had
- 43:16Speaker 1: a friend who worked at CBS. He said, send me
- 43:19Speaker 1: an air check tape. So I sent him Glass and Show.
- 43:22Speaker 1: He loved it. So now we got this deal with
- 43:25Speaker 1: CBS the time, which is probably a worth deal and
- 43:27Speaker 1: hit real podcast, and it was like, I think we
- 43:30Speaker 1: was getting something like thirty They was paying for the
- 43:33Speaker 1: studio time on certain shows, right, but on other shows
- 43:36Speaker 1: they didn't pick up. I had to cover that studio time, right.
- 43:38Speaker 1: So I had these shows, and I had an idea
- 43:41Speaker 1: of a year earlier by the show called gainst the Chronicles.
- 43:44Speaker 1: I said, dude, I want to do a show about people.
- 43:48Speaker 1: I didn't. I wanted to be a crime show, but
- 43:51Speaker 1: I wanted to show the opposite effect of it. I
- 43:53Speaker 1: just didn't want to be out there like everybody else,
- 43:55Speaker 1: kind of like glorifying some ship because it looks cool.
- 43:58Speaker 1: I wanted to tell the truth, you know, and show
- 44:00Speaker 1: that it is light at the end of the tunnel.
- 44:02Speaker 1: So we started The Gangster Chronicles. I said, we need
- 44:04Speaker 1: to get a real street dude. If we could find
- 44:07Speaker 1: a guy that worked in law enforcement, and we gotta
- 44:09Speaker 1: have a square. I played the Square for the first
- 44:14Speaker 1: five episodes, but at that time I was looking at
- 44:17Speaker 1: moving to Atlanta, because you know, I'm in the music industry,
- 44:19Speaker 1: and I was like, man, this is really cracking and
- 44:21Speaker 1: a t L. I want to go down there and
- 44:23Speaker 1: plus your money districts from me and my wife had
- 44:25Speaker 1: actually went down there and actually was in the process
- 44:28Speaker 1: of booting to a house and I was gonna rint
- 44:29Speaker 1: my house out to a friend out here. So that
- 44:32Speaker 1: didn't happened. I wound up staying. So in the course
- 44:35Speaker 1: of that, I wound up hiring somebody to replace me
- 44:38Speaker 1: as the square the Squares gets the moderator on Gangster Chronicles.
- 44:42Speaker 1: He's not really the start. He's like the guy that
- 44:44Speaker 1: kind of keeps the conversation flowing because you've got two guys.
- 44:48Speaker 1: Is that the reason why you're calling the squares Because
- 44:50Speaker 1: you didn't have like a gangster background. Yeah, because you
- 44:52Speaker 1: don't have no gang affiliation. There had to be somebody
- 44:56Speaker 1: to be neutral, Like, we didn't want nobody in there
- 44:58Speaker 1: that was, like, you know, may have the crip or
- 45:00Speaker 1: blood or whatever, because they couldn't come from a really
- 45:04Speaker 1: they couldn't come from a subjective place. You feel what
- 45:06Speaker 1: I'm saying. They would always be about theyhood or whatever.
- 45:10Speaker 1: So we brought this other guy in. Um, the whole
- 45:13Speaker 1: thing leaves with that show. We knew that one of
- 45:16Speaker 1: the hosts, Reggie Wright, was gonna be a head to
- 45:18Speaker 1: turn himself in. He got caught up in some stuff
- 45:21Speaker 1: with his Mari wanted dispensery or whatever, and he he
- 45:24Speaker 1: didn't know what kind of time he was gonna get.
- 45:25Speaker 1: He didn't know what he was whether he was gonna
- 45:27Speaker 1: get a year or twenty years. We didn't know what
- 45:29Speaker 1: them people were talking about. Right, So luckily he wounded
- 45:32Speaker 1: up getting a year. So we had him going to jail.
- 45:35Speaker 1: So I said, you know what, I didn't bring up
- 45:39Speaker 1: the part about you know, everybody knowing podcasting is going
- 45:43Speaker 1: through this thing and where when someone makes it big,
- 45:45Speaker 1: it's always somebody discriminal and their crew that comes out
- 45:47Speaker 1: talking ship like, oh he dogged me out. So this
- 45:50Speaker 1: is what happened with me. This is my first lesson
- 45:53Speaker 1: and stuff. Right, we got the show going and they're
- 45:56Speaker 1: starting to pop because and I'm not gonna say it's
- 45:58Speaker 1: because of my genius, and that's sail, but lad has
- 46:02Speaker 1: starts speaking on the show a whole lot. And at
- 46:04Speaker 1: that time, the guy James was this a thing second
- 46:07Speaker 1: highest still maybe the second most watched interview ever on
- 46:11Speaker 1: his podcast. He was like at like something like fifteen
- 46:14Speaker 1: million views or something like that, Right, James James McDonald's
- 46:18Speaker 1: on one of the coasts the chronicles. Then you had Reggio,
- 46:22Speaker 1: when that Reggio was a real, real controversial guy. Reggie
- 46:25Speaker 1: ain't got no filter. He kind of just says whatever
- 46:27Speaker 1: comes to the Reggie's mind and he's gonna say it, right.
- 46:30Speaker 1: So you already had that like kind of like um
- 46:34Speaker 1: that car crash effect to where people have turned around
- 46:36Speaker 1: you don't know what they gonna say next. And so
- 46:39Speaker 1: we got this other guy whose name I won't mention
- 46:42Speaker 1: this on that right the very the second month he
- 46:45Speaker 1: was there, he tried to convince James and the other
- 46:49Speaker 1: co hosts to come with him and his other guy
- 46:52Speaker 1: across the street somewhere. So they told me about it again.
- 46:57Speaker 1: I don't deal in emotion, not deal in business. I
- 47:00Speaker 1: need no one new Ray. She was about to go
- 47:03Speaker 1: to jail and mean knowing that there's no way James
- 47:06Speaker 1: could do this by myself. Now, I don't have the
- 47:07Speaker 1: time to do this show. I couldn't just check this
- 47:10Speaker 1: dude off the show. So I told him, hey, man,
- 47:11Speaker 1: I'm getting to what you got going on. Don't be
- 47:14Speaker 1: trying to impede on my show, you know what I mean?
- 47:16Speaker 1: And I just took a totally professional approach to it.
- 47:19Speaker 1: I said, you know, I was gonna get attorneys evolved
- 47:21Speaker 1: and everything else. But them dudes when leaving, right, So
- 47:24Speaker 1: he stayed there and he just kind of just became
- 47:27Speaker 1: more and more of a headache. It was always things
- 47:30Speaker 1: like and at that time, the first fifteen twenty episodes
- 47:34Speaker 1: Against the Chronicles ain't on film because it was the
- 47:37Speaker 1: strictly audio thing. But we had a fan base of
- 47:40Speaker 1: people start saying, you guys just started recording the show,
- 47:42Speaker 1: and I was thinking, like, what the hell do I
- 47:44Speaker 1: find up and a person that I just that wasn't
- 47:47Speaker 1: my world and I didn't get into it for that.
- 47:50Speaker 1: So I had this guy did it kept in boxing
- 47:53Speaker 1: me and I didn't know he was in boxing me
- 47:54Speaker 1: on Instagram, different hitting boxes and here. Because if you
- 48:00Speaker 1: somebody not following you, you can have somebody trying to
- 48:03Speaker 1: give you a million dollars and they didn't get to you.
- 48:05Speaker 1: So I finally looked at it and I said, you
- 48:07Speaker 1: know what, this guy has some pretty good stuff. I
- 48:09Speaker 1: called him. I wanted to make sure he wasn't weird,
- 48:12Speaker 1: because you know, dealing with the internet, you don't know
- 48:14Speaker 1: you invite somebody in your studio. They might comep in,
- 48:16Speaker 1: try to murder you, ask something you know. So I
- 48:19Speaker 1: met him. He wounded up being a cool dude, So
- 48:21Speaker 1: he wounded up being our guy. Actually wanted up becoming
- 48:23Speaker 1: an employee of Digital Soapbox. So it kind of pissed
- 48:27Speaker 1: me off when this other guy would be calling him
- 48:29Speaker 1: and telling him, Hey, I want you to edit this
- 48:31Speaker 1: like this, And I had to tell him, like, dude,
- 48:34Speaker 1: don't contradict my stuff with my employe. This guy works
- 48:38Speaker 1: with me. He's not your employe. You are just to
- 48:42Speaker 1: work for hire yourself. So I don't even know why
- 48:44Speaker 1: you're going through all that. You're not to produce for
- 48:45Speaker 1: this show. So again, and I kept a professional. This
- 48:50Speaker 1: dude just kept a bunch of stuff when he started
- 48:52Speaker 1: being late all the time. This is when Raised went
- 48:54Speaker 1: to jail and starting to piss James off too. Right,
- 48:57Speaker 1: So Covid comes up. Clovid comes around. The whole world
- 49:05Speaker 1: is in a panic. I'm pretty sure you all remember that.
- 49:07Speaker 1: I remember really fast. Yes, I'm scared to death because
- 49:13Speaker 1: I gotta ask mom and I don't know, man, some
- 49:15Speaker 1: ship in the air. We might fun around and go
- 49:16Speaker 1: outside and pass out. We don't know what's going on.
- 49:18Speaker 1: Remember I dropped something on the ground at the grocery
- 49:20Speaker 1: store and I wouldn't even pick it up because I said, man,
- 49:23Speaker 1: it's contaminated. Right, So do you remember that? It was
- 49:28Speaker 1: like two years of straight man. It was bullshit and
- 49:32Speaker 1: just it's almost like you in house the rest. You
- 49:34Speaker 1: don't want to go, no where. You're scared to death,
- 49:37Speaker 1: and your kids don't give a funk. That's what makes
- 49:39Speaker 1: it even more scary because they're trying out, they refusing
- 49:41Speaker 1: to weard mask and all that ship. Well, it's not
- 49:43Speaker 1: gonna matter, you know. And I'm looking at my daughter like,
- 49:46Speaker 1: if you don't put that damn mask on, you have
- 49:47Speaker 1: to sleep in the garage. So we get all scared, right,
- 49:53Speaker 1: So I'm sorry. That is the funniest thing I heard
- 49:56Speaker 1: a week. So at that point we got an interview
- 49:58Speaker 1: of Warringe. He coming up Warreng she is my guy.
- 50:02Speaker 1: So I text him, I say, hey, this is the
- 50:05Speaker 1: zoom Wing. We have interview with Warrangey. He just don't
- 50:09Speaker 1: respond back. You know me, I can give a fine,
- 50:13Speaker 1: like I'm just tired of just do what I'm moving.
- 50:14Speaker 1: You don't respond back. But James is kind of panicking
- 50:18Speaker 1: because he's like, I can't do the show by myself.
- 50:20Speaker 1: Well en up, and I'm like, dude, shut up, I
- 50:23Speaker 1: got you. He calls to dude like a hundred times. Dude,
- 50:26Speaker 1: don't respond. I'm like, dude, stop calling him. If he
- 50:29Speaker 1: want to be here, he'd be here if he don't.
- 50:30Speaker 1: Let him go in about his business. So that warrangey
- 50:34Speaker 1: episode winds up turning the two episodes three episodes. We
- 50:38Speaker 1: wound up doing all of episodes just me and him
- 50:42Speaker 1: after that, right, and I never addressed the elephant in
- 50:45Speaker 1: the room with him being done, I'm thinking, Bregg, you
- 50:47Speaker 1: could be back home in a year. As soon as
- 50:49Speaker 1: they come back. It's cracking. And by this time, James
- 50:52Speaker 1: is getting a lot more season than what he's doing.
- 50:54Speaker 1: He actually ran a few episodes by itself and they
- 50:57Speaker 1: turned out really well. So at this point we just
- 51:00Speaker 1: keep on moving. Right then people start calling us. I
- 51:05Speaker 1: started getting all kinds of different costs of people's research department,
- 51:09Speaker 1: like Spotify hit us up and say, hey, what's going
- 51:11Speaker 1: on with this show? Won't you won't can you confirm
- 51:14Speaker 1: your analytics? Because contrary to what people know, these companies
- 51:18Speaker 1: have ways to find out what your numbers are. It's
- 51:21Speaker 1: just the best case, though they don't know for sure that.
- 51:24Speaker 1: So they asked you to see your analytics and sport
- 51:26Speaker 1: making you sitting us your analytics. Sure, so they offered
- 51:30Speaker 1: us something, but it wasn't really hitting on what I
- 51:32Speaker 1: was interested in because I knew for always want to
- 51:35Speaker 1: own my own content. Unless you've give me a bag
- 51:38Speaker 1: of money. No, this is still mine, and you know
- 51:42Speaker 1: what you got is yours, and it's just still mind.
- 51:43Speaker 1: But unless you're giving me a couple of million dollars,
- 51:46Speaker 1: why would I just give you my intellectual property? So
- 51:50Speaker 1: we get these people calls and they got a company
- 51:52Speaker 1: Benchtown that hits us. Again. It was another deal that
- 51:55Speaker 1: was cool. All these companies are cool, but it was
- 51:57Speaker 1: just not nothing to my liking. And but I got
- 52:00Speaker 1: to explain the Exames because he wondered why why we
- 52:02Speaker 1: aren't taking this money from these people, And I'm like, dude,
- 52:04Speaker 1: it's not a good deal. You can want to be
- 52:06Speaker 1: mad at me in a year or so if we
- 52:07Speaker 1: do take this deal. Right, So then one day I'm
- 52:12Speaker 1: going in the Kaiser, right, and you know this is
- 52:15Speaker 1: steel a pandemic. We massed up, we outside. My phone
- 52:19Speaker 1: rings a couple of times from this weird number, and
- 52:22Speaker 1: I ignored the first time because you know, like your
- 52:24Speaker 1: phone said scam on there and started doing a little
- 52:27Speaker 1: scam thing and knowing the call. Then I finally answered
- 52:30Speaker 1: like like like kind of mad, like hello Peace King.
- 52:34Speaker 1: I'm like, who is this is? Charlotte Mane? I hang
- 52:37Speaker 1: up like like you know, like how to hell you
- 52:39Speaker 1: get the Charlotte Maine calling me? You know what I mean?
- 52:41Speaker 1: So I didn't play some mind at him. And Glasses
- 52:44Speaker 1: was friends like Glasses and known Charlotte Mayne since he
- 52:47Speaker 1: was just coming to business going on a little small
- 52:50Speaker 1: promo tourists. He knew Charlotte Mayne before Charlotte Mayne was yeah,
- 52:56Speaker 1: I didn't think it was him. So I finally answered.
- 52:58Speaker 1: He was like, hey, man, you know I'm starting this network.
- 53:00Speaker 1: If I got your I'm from Glasses and I really
- 53:02Speaker 1: like YO show. And so I was like, damn, this
- 53:05Speaker 1: is dope. That's Charlotte Magne calling the motherfucker. You know
- 53:08Speaker 1: what I'm like, I'm kind of feeling myself. I'm like, man,
- 53:11Speaker 1: the people calling me, I'm answering, I gotta call you back.
- 53:14Speaker 1: I'm on the phone with Charlotte Magne just let him know,
- 53:16Speaker 1: you know what I mean. So we're kicking it right,
- 53:21Speaker 1: we have to figure out what we go do not
- 53:22Speaker 1: tell I don't even tell James Jackson. I don't tell
- 53:25Speaker 1: him nothing unless it's going down, because then you've got
- 53:27Speaker 1: somebody bugging the hell out of you know, what's going on? This?
- 53:31Speaker 1: What's going on? Right? So we get that. Then we
- 53:36Speaker 1: set up a series of calls. Right then, me and
- 53:38Speaker 1: Charlotte Maine talking one day and he asked me how
- 53:40Speaker 1: much money y'all want. I'm like, damn, let me get
- 53:43Speaker 1: back to you, bro. Then let me figure you know,
- 53:45Speaker 1: let me figure out. So then we get a call
- 53:50Speaker 1: on the phone. I just liked the vibe everybody up there,
- 53:52Speaker 1: see Dolly, and then wasn't there yet. Dolly hadn't came
- 53:56Speaker 1: on board yet. She wasn't there yet. And then I
- 53:58Speaker 1: called the wonder Woman, Wonder the wonder women, you know,
- 54:06Speaker 1: Dolly high Cool and all of them, Chanel. They weren't
- 54:10Speaker 1: there yet. But I just felt like the genuineness of
- 54:15Speaker 1: the whole network. It wasn't even something much about the money.
- 54:17Speaker 1: It was about somebody that's gonna stand up on the
- 54:19Speaker 1: table for you when somebody possibly talking about releasing you
- 54:23Speaker 1: or something like that. They're the type people that's gonna
- 54:25Speaker 1: stand from the table for you, you know. So I
- 54:27Speaker 1: felt that was important. So we wound up doing a
- 54:29Speaker 1: deal with them, and we had to be real quiet
- 54:31Speaker 1: about it. And the hardest thing for me was keeping
- 54:34Speaker 1: James kind of like because he don't know how corporations work.
- 54:38Speaker 1: When he did the deal with me, I was able
- 54:39Speaker 1: to get the paperwork to them even with us now
- 54:42Speaker 1: as slow as hell because we got attorneys and everything involved. Now,
- 54:45Speaker 1: so I hit my attorney and I want to get
- 54:47Speaker 1: a deal. Sometimes I have that like, dude, I want
- 54:49Speaker 1: to ask you for the because it ain't a boiler plate.
- 54:51Speaker 1: It's not just like a template on the deal. You
- 54:52Speaker 1: gotta ask you throw that up from word one, right.
- 54:55Speaker 1: So we're waiting on the paper and James like, man,
- 54:58Speaker 1: it's these people bullshit. Man, I've been two week. US said, dude,
- 55:02Speaker 1: you gotta chill, man like, you gotta really chill, like
- 55:06Speaker 1: I ain't gonna do this ship. You gotta relax. Like.
- 55:08Speaker 1: So we wound up getting the deal done, and I
- 55:12Speaker 1: tell you, it's been one of the biggest joys I
- 55:16Speaker 1: had because you very rarely have those situations to where
- 55:20Speaker 1: you like everybody you work like. Dolly is cool to see.
- 55:24Speaker 1: I love Dolly, always call the President. I've known Dolly
- 55:27Speaker 1: for over ten years, I think, and I've seen her blossom.
- 55:32Speaker 1: We both worked with Nick Cannon for a long time,
- 55:35Speaker 1: and so I've seen her blossom and surpassed I think
- 55:40Speaker 1: anything anybody could ever imagine. And even when we talked,
- 55:43Speaker 1: like her level of acumen, just like sometimes I'll be
- 55:45Speaker 1: talking to her and she'll you know, it's like I
- 55:49Speaker 1: felt like for a long time it was the opposite,
- 55:52Speaker 1: like she kind of looked up to me, and now
- 55:53Speaker 1: I switched and it's for me. It's a beautiful thing.
- 55:56Speaker 1: And sometimes she'd be like, you know, I still look
- 55:57Speaker 1: I'm seeing me like, girl, please don't hump ump, don't
- 56:00Speaker 1: trying to make me feel good right now. In the
- 56:02Speaker 1: whole crew over there is the bomb. Yeah, they're they're
- 56:05Speaker 1: really good people. And so I said, as you know, what,
- 56:07Speaker 1: if I'm gonna be in the business relationship with somebody,
- 56:10Speaker 1: I wanted to be that way too, where we all
- 56:12Speaker 1: honest each other. And it's like if they called me
- 56:14Speaker 1: tomorrow and say, hey, we're not messing with y'all show
- 56:17Speaker 1: no more. It wouldn't be no beef. It wouldn't be
- 56:19Speaker 1: right because they just all those people are good people.
- 56:23Speaker 1: They're not going to ever do nothing like underhanded. It's like,
- 56:26Speaker 1: I don't even think that way with them. I don't
- 56:27Speaker 1: even have to worry about it, because first of all,
- 56:30Speaker 1: it's making corporation. You don't get no bigger than our
- 56:32Speaker 1: Heart media. And I like the fact that Black Effect
- 56:36Speaker 1: feels its own separate entity. So when people ask me,
- 56:39Speaker 1: I'll say, yeah, they go through our heart, but I'm
- 56:40Speaker 1: signed the Black Effect. I'm signed. You know, this is
- 56:42Speaker 1: what we say. I will say this thought. Oh when
- 56:44Speaker 1: we were at the Heart, I think I heart had
- 56:47Speaker 1: that that event. I heard people were also pretty oh yeah,
- 56:51Speaker 1: the Black Effect really great. So it's I just think
- 56:57Speaker 1: the thing about the Black Effect, which, by the way,
- 56:59Speaker 1: I remember that transition where like I heard that Charlottagne
- 57:02Speaker 1: wanted eating wall Broke, which I was like, Jesus, you're
- 57:06Speaker 1: you're you know, like, oh my gosh, what a miracle.
- 57:09Speaker 1: But I remember that period where like from Charlottagne saying
- 57:12Speaker 1: he wants eating well Broke too, the period where the
- 57:14Speaker 1: paperwork actually came it was like, like, you know, I
- 57:19Speaker 1: remember that period of like waiting and I was like
- 57:22Speaker 1: waiting on the baby. Because you're like waiting, it's like
- 57:25Speaker 1: and you don't you don't want to be eager either.
- 57:26Speaker 1: You can't call and be like hey, you just gotta
- 57:28Speaker 1: be chilled. You gotta be like Okay. That's how it
- 57:30Speaker 1: was because you gotta remember at the time on him
- 57:33Speaker 1: as other people still calling. So I have the pressure
- 57:36Speaker 1: like even now when you're waiting on those renews. And
- 57:40Speaker 1: that's why they tell like, do you kind of need
- 57:43Speaker 1: to know because this people calling, these people with a
- 57:45Speaker 1: lot of money and they I'm trying to keep them,
- 57:48Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. I'm like, yeah, I need
- 57:50Speaker 1: to know what we do. But you know what I mean.
- 57:52Speaker 1: And she may say, oh, norm we found you know,
- 57:54Speaker 1: I thought we was. You know, I need to know
- 57:55Speaker 1: on paper kind of because it's still it was a
- 57:57Speaker 1: business at the end of the day, and I know
- 58:00Speaker 1: we're about to go through renewal. So I'm like sweat
- 58:04Speaker 1: and bullets and the girls there are so nice, They're
- 58:06Speaker 1: just like holy and I'm like, well, I kind of
- 58:09Speaker 1: need to know to you know, with the next step,
- 58:11Speaker 1: especially when you have interview shows because you have to
- 58:14Speaker 1: take so many in advances to make sure. And that's
- 58:17Speaker 1: the big thing. And we're going down. I can't say
- 58:19Speaker 1: too much about it, but we're going through a massive
- 58:21Speaker 1: transition on the gainst the chronicles to where we are
- 58:25Speaker 1: getting more focused on crime, but not just not just
- 58:30Speaker 1: dealing with the l A stuff. You know, we're going
- 58:34Speaker 1: to dealing more with the vice lords. You know what
- 58:36Speaker 1: the Vice Lords had going on, you know, Larry Hoover's case,
- 58:39Speaker 1: even some of the um like the Black Prison Games,
- 58:43Speaker 1: like the Black Guerrilla Family and the Arian Nation, the
- 58:46Speaker 1: Arian Brotherhood. We're going to go and do a really
- 58:48Speaker 1: journalistic deep dive to these people, these organizations, right, So
- 58:52Speaker 1: it's like we need to know what's going on, and
- 58:56Speaker 1: that's the part of the business, but with digital soapbox.
- 59:00Speaker 1: But wound up happening to me was we have so
- 59:02Speaker 1: many great people from Young Mouth, you know, from the
- 59:05Speaker 1: Bay Area, from the Group to Looney's um, Crazy bone
- 59:08Speaker 1: on walk through our doors. Before you know, math Offer,
- 59:11Speaker 1: he was with us at first, and even though and
- 59:14Speaker 1: I appreciate math Offer, that was one of those situations
- 59:16Speaker 1: and where it never was no beat for nothing like
- 59:18Speaker 1: that he just didn't know what enough about the business
- 59:21Speaker 1: to his conference. He kind of told me, big bro,
- 59:23Speaker 1: let me go and do my thing four minutes so
- 59:25Speaker 1: I can figure this out. And it was cool. I
- 59:27Speaker 1: don't hold people of paperwork. It was just, you know,
- 59:29Speaker 1: it was cool. I didn't have no bunch of money
- 59:31Speaker 1: out there with him, so it was like, you know what, man,
- 59:34Speaker 1: we shook hands and he wanted to buy his business,
- 59:36Speaker 1: and you see he's flourishing. Now. You know, we got
- 59:38Speaker 1: some great people on network. And we went from this
- 59:41Speaker 1: transition sort of like you know, I told you we
- 59:44Speaker 1: had the camera guy coming in that one camera got
- 59:46Speaker 1: turned the two guys that you're done with them. Next thing,
- 59:49Speaker 1: you know, you've got three guys. Then you've got four guys.
- 59:51Speaker 1: Now you got a building that you're dealing with. And
- 59:54Speaker 1: it kind of turned to a media company because we
- 59:56Speaker 1: started putting different stuff together, different types of content together,
- 59:59Speaker 1: to where now we're launching your own TV network, you know,
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: rap television. We're kind of bringing back the old b
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: et basement flavor to where we're playing it just nothing
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: but hip hop music videos. But we're also showing content,
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: urban content, the best urban content, and which we want
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: to bring you know, you know, and that's the thing, um,
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: you know, because streaming has just went like this. It
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: went from just being I remember when I first got Roku,
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: I was invested by one. Then I saw this thick
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: and I got I was just talking about my cable
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: be obviously cable three dollars a month, we playing for
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: some ship. They don't even showing little on this. So
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: I got that Roku stick. Ever since then, I've been
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: off a cable man. So, UM, I just want to
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: say thank you so much for coming to our show. Um,
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: what advice would you give to anybody that's striving to
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: be not just the music business or the publishing business,
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: but the podcast business coming from I was the first
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: thing I would say is to manage your expectations. I
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: think people in general here so much about these deals
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: that are often inflated. And you know that's no problem.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: All these brothers I are making as much money as
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: they can. But a lot of the more over inflated.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: You know, they hear about people getting five, ten million dollars,
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: fifty million dollars like Joe Rogan also had astronomical numbers
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: to back it up. I think this dude was doing
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: something like a million an episode on YouTube. Same with
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: his podcast, so he's deserving that type of money. But
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: Joe has also been doing this since the beginning a podcast.
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: It took a while. I would tell people just to
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: persevere and don't think about the money, just to keep
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: their stuff going consistent, being be consistent what you're doing.
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: It doesn't matter if you ain't making a dyme matter.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: Don't get into it for money, because that's the same
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: thing with music. Any artists that every approached me like
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: I'm trying to get a bag, I'm like, I ain't
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: the one for you. Any One tells me they're passionate
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: about their music and want to get better their craft.
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: I'm with that because if you're the more proficient you're
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: becoming something, money is going to come evetiently. I don't
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: care if you are. If you are, do to just
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: paint pictures of cartoons in your room all day. Eventually
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: them cartoons will be so dope where people gonna be
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: offering your money for them cartoons. Yeah, So focus on
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: being great, don't focus on gett into the bagage y'all.
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: Young people would say, focus on being great with what
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: it is you're doing and enjoying it and enjoying its Yeah,
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: because I don't care how much money you know, Like
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: I said, I think with that publishing company, I was
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: making three hundred thousand dollars a year on the salary
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: man when they have money, but I was miserable. Yeah,
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: I wasn't happy doing it. So I don't care how
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: much money you've got. Money ain't gonna make you happy. No, no,
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: And it's it's the forever ending chase. Like I'll see
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: people and still be a person living on forty thousand
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: and then there's another person living on two hundred thousand.
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: And at the end of the day, it's like the
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: more money you make your the more overhead. It just
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: never stops. So just finding what kind of provides you
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: piece and not being a slave to the system. And
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: then's the thing. Remember this, and this is from my
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: brothers out there, guerrillas only below in the ejumple. They
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: don't belong in the boardroom. You're going to have disagreements.
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: Sometimes you can't take stuff personal. So I would tell
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: people think more with their brain and not with emotions.
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: Everything is not a personal attack. So I see a
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: lot of people play themselves like that like they may
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: be having a problem with the label and think the
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: labels all the time trying to cheat you. Sometimes it's
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: just it's just what it is. You know, you want
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: to get an understanding with them, But everything about cussing
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: people out, you always want to maintain your professionalism. Yeah,
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: I think as a woman, that is probably going to
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: be harder advice to take. Well, y'all go through a
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: lot more too. Yeah, y'all go through a lot more too.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: It's a difference. And you know, I'm the six ft four,
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: big black dudes, so people people, people are going to
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: handle me a certain way versius you. They may feel
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: like they can handle you in a certain way. And
