- 0:12Welcome to It's My Money.
- 0:14It's My Money is brought to you by Brenthurst Wealth, South Africa's
- 0:17multi-award winning boutique wealth manager.
- 0:19Now, have a listen to this.
- 0:21Most of us have heard of the saying January.
- 0:22If you haven't, it's South African slang for the financial stress people often feel
- 0:27at the start of the year.
- 0:29a portmanteau of course, of January and worry.
- 0:32Here now is South Africa's very own Scrooge himself to talk about what January
- 0:39means and what causes
- 0:41January.
- 0:43It's Mags Haystack from Brenthurst Wealth.
- 0:45Mags, you're not going to rain on Christmas already.
- 0:47It hasn't even started.
- 0:49It's only early December, but I do know what you mean.
- 0:51No, Lindsay, as always, thanks so much.
- 0:51And, you know, it's really more about, you know, it's called the festive period for a
- 0:57reason.
- 0:58And we're all having...
- 0:59you know time with family and friends and and it's it's it's the time it's i think
- 1:06it's the one time of the year where we can all you know let our
- 1:08hair down and really have a good time but it's really more just of a let's say a
- 1:13cautionary
- 1:13tale of you know what happens once the party's finished you know the music's the
- 1:20music's gone you're putting all the
- 1:22empty bottles away and and you actually still you
- 1:23know have to come back to reality and the the article that i is really just about...
- 1:29you know how do you prevent that financial stress you know you know what happens in
- 1:35the weeks after new
- 1:37year's and christmas and you know just you know keeping a little bit of a bit of
- 1:42sense in your spending and
- 1:44and you know just trying to help people just to you know rain in rain in their
- 1:49spending i can remember horribly horribly
- 1:51the memories really haunt me is when you get paid um you get paid early in december
- 1:56normally sometimes you might get a
- 1:58bonus that was the old days.
- 2:00And so you've got all this money sitting there and you think, OK, it's the time of
- 2:02year where I'm going to let my hair down.
- 2:04I had a bit of a year.
- 2:06So let's let's splurge.
- 2:08And it comes to mid-January and you're still two or three weeks away from your
- 2:11paycheck.
- 2:13And everything's gone.
- 2:13And it really is the most depressing time, Max.
- 2:16No, 100 percent.
- 2:17It's the it's the post-holiday blues.
- 2:20You know, for a lot of families, it's the start of the new school year.
- 2:23And that comes with its own.
- 2:25let's say, list of expenses and it's clothing and shoes and books and
- 2:31everything else.
- 2:33And for those who don't have kids, you know, you still have quite a bit of time,
- 2:35you know,
- 2:37before that next paycheck hits your bank account.
- 2:39And like you said, you know, for a lot of people who do actually, you know, have
- 2:44the, let's say,
- 2:46benefit of a 13th check, you know, first and foremost, very, very fortunate.
- 2:49Not everyone is, you know, going to be getting something like that.
- 2:54But it's just a very good time, you know, just, you know,
- 2:57kind of have a checklist before you start your festivities.
- 3:01Yes, indeed.
- 3:02And the first check is on your list anyway.
- 3:05Avoid credit.
- 3:07Why do you say that?
- 3:07Is it because it's so tempting just to whip that credit card out in the shops and
- 3:14away you go and don't think about it without what you might
- 3:16normally do during the year?
- 3:18And that is sort of calculate what you've spent.
- 3:20You just get carried away with the whole situation.
- 3:22What's your point here?
- 3:24Yeah, so, you know, I'm going to...
- 3:26give you a little bit of, you know, insight maybe from friends or family just
- 3:28over the years.
- 3:30And, you know, a comment that, you know, stuck with me is that someone said, oh,
- 3:33you know,
- 3:33I've had to max out my credit card because they had to buy X, Y, and Z.
- 3:37And that always stuck with me because it's such a risky maneuver when you're using
- 3:44credit because the
- 3:46biggest problem with credit is those extremely high interest rates that are,
- 3:51you know, that are going to catch up with you.
- 3:53and very, very quickly.
- 3:53You know, obviously, you know, in my opinion, again, you know,
- 3:59the commentary and whatever we write,
- 4:01it's not aimed at anyone specifically and everyone's circumstances are completely
- 4:06different.
- 4:08But credit is a very, very difficult way of trying to rein in your spending because
- 4:14it's the proverbial
- 4:16kicking the can down the road.
- 4:18You know, if you're using credit for...
- 4:20gifts and travel and holidays and all of that, it's just going to actually put you
- 4:24in an even worse off position, you know,
- 4:26next year.
- 4:28So it's just to say, you know, if you have the ability, try not to dip into that line
- 4:33of credit unnecessarily.
- 4:35I've spoken to colleagues of yours before about credit and credit cards and credit
- 4:40cards can be very,
- 4:42very useful indeed, if managed properly.
- 4:43So don't let...
- 4:44that your discipline of the previous 11 months run away with you in the 12th
- 4:49month.
- 4:50In other words, just stick to your guns on that one.
- 4:52Second point you make is be realistic.
- 4:54And I would add to that, Mags, manage expectations as well,
- 4:58because other people have expectations of you during this period.
- 5:02Yeah.
- 5:03And, you know, again, it's the lead up to Christmas and then it's Christmas and, you
- 5:08know,
- 5:08all the other religious holidays during this time period.
- 5:11and it's a time where...
- 5:13Families are getting together and Those events cost money.
- 5:17It's food.
- 5:18It's, let's say, you know, everything else that comes with it.
- 5:22It's gifts.
- 5:22It's traveling and petrol.
- 5:25All of these things, you know, they can add up very, very, very quickly.
- 5:29And it's just to say, you know, if you've been spending a certain way, don't let
- 5:34your guard down completely.
- 5:36You can still have a good time and, you know, definitely enjoy it.
- 5:38Go out and, you know, have a fantastic time,
- 5:41but just be realistic in the sense of you know how much you have let's say, to work
- 5:47with.
- 5:47You know that there are obviously expenses coming your way.
- 5:51Be realistic in the sense of, you know, don't overspend and then worry about it
- 5:57next year.
- 5:57Don't, you know, start the, let's say, the new year on a bad foot.
- 6:00Quite right.
- 6:01Set a budget.
- 6:02Now, that's very difficult when you're getting nagged by partners, family,
- 6:08children, etc.
- 6:10And you're under emotional pressure.
- 6:11So to sit down and set a budget at this time of year takes a lot of discipline,
- 6:15Max.
- 6:17Yeah.
- 6:19No, I fully agree with you.
- 6:21And I think, you know, we're all guilty of it.
- 6:23And, you know, someone made a comment, you know, I was talking about this podcast
- 6:26earlier.
- 6:28And they said, you know, this is the time when people change their palates.
- 6:30And, you know, they've been ordering, you know, and excuse anyone who doesn't drink,
- 6:34but, you know, they've been ordering.
- 6:36KWV, three-year-old the whole year.
- 6:38Now they decide they're going to go for a 10-year-old.
- 6:40You know, I thought it was quite funny.
- 6:43And it's, you know, that can apply to anything.
- 6:45It can apply to, let's say, your standards of going out and everything else.
- 6:50And setting a budget is just an easy way of saying, okay, I know exactly how much
- 6:56money I'm going to be earning because we obviously,
- 6:58only at the beginning of December now, you know how much you're going to be earning.
- 7:01Just put enough away that, you know, will get you through.
- 7:05the rest of the 300 days of January.
- 7:08You know, the budget is just a good way to understand, am I on the right track?
- 7:13Am I maybe a little bit behind?
- 7:15Maybe I'm doing better than expected.
- 7:17And it would just enable you to just have a more manageable January and not,
- 7:24again, not being in a position where, you know, things are a little bit tighter and
- 7:30we're having to now make those cuts.
- 7:32Everyone can have a good time if you just, again, going back to point number two, be
- 7:37realistic, set a budget, and just, you know,
- 7:39try to keep a rein on exactly what is going on of your bank account.
- 7:41Just give us a tip on how we should set a budget.
- 7:43I mean, it's all very well saying, right, I've got X amount for the month of
- 7:48December.
- 7:50But I think you have to allocate the money to different areas of Christmas and New
- 7:54Year
- 7:55or whatever it is you're celebrating, don't you think?
- 7:57And you have to sort of prioritize certain events and certain expenditure.
- 8:03Yeah, so it's something I've discussed in the past.
- 8:05You know, the most important thing is to put away the money that you need.
- 8:12That is, you know, there's no question about, you know, you have to pay rent or
- 8:18bond and electricity and everything else.
- 8:20That is vital.
- 8:22That is vital money that you need, maybe petrol and all of that.
- 8:24And then understanding, okay, I've got X amount.
- 8:27You know, this is what we can do.
- 8:28And yeah, split it over.
- 8:30In this case, it would be five weeks.
- 8:32because I think most companies are paying their staff earlier in December.
- 8:36So it's not now the usual four weeks.
- 8:39It's now five weeks.
- 8:41And again, keeping track on that.
- 8:44I mean, also in my article, you know, I did go a little bit technical, you know,
- 8:48talking about marginal propensity to consume, you know, which was an economic
- 8:53theory by
- 8:55John Keynes.
- 8:57And long story short, it basically says that when people earn more, they tend to
- 9:01spend more.
- 9:01And that could be, you know, vitally important in December.
- 9:05Again, going back to that 13th check,
- 9:08you might have some people who now have a lot more money than they used to getting
- 9:14on a monthly basis.
- 9:16And from a psychological point of view, they tend to spend more because the
- 9:20perception is that they have more.
- 9:22So that's going again into very technical details to say don't get caught in that
- 9:24trap.
- 9:24Don't think just because you have more, you should be spending more.
- 9:28Like you said, you know, the scrooge in me is to say it's all about making sure that,
- 9:33you know,
- 9:35you're just having a good time and that stress is, you know, hopefully next to
- 9:40next to null, you know,
- 9:42when 2026 comes around.
- 9:42NPC may be a Keynesian theory, but on the other hand, it's to me, it's just simply
- 9:48human nature.
- 9:50It's what we are.
- 9:52We're fragile creatures.
- 9:54OK, the final point you make is save now, benefit later.
- 9:56Put something in the back pocket, put something metaphorically under the
- 9:57mattress.
- 9:58if you would, so that when everyone else is struggling a bit, you can sail through
- 10:03that January.
- 10:05Yeah.
- 10:07And again, it's each person is different.
- 10:08And, you know, it's, you know, if you look at our society, yes, I'm fully aware, you
- 10:14know,
- 10:15there are a lot of people who are, let's say, in different financial positions.
- 10:18And it's not about pointing out certain tips that let's say, apply to,
- 10:26you know, person A, but maybe not person B, because they're in different, let's
- 10:31say, income brackets.
- 10:33I think everyone has the ability to manage their finances on their own.
- 10:36Not to sound too direct, but, you know,
- 10:39people should just take a bit of time to plan their finances better.
- 10:44I mean, we're all planning our year-end functions and Christmas parties and New
- 10:48Year's parties.
- 10:50Take a bit of time and actually plan your finances.
- 10:51I mean, that's really the...
- 10:53in my honest opinion, the way that people should be doing that.
- 10:56And, you know, to summarize, it's just going to take a lot of the stress and
- 11:02headaches and all of that.
- 11:04And we've all been there.
- 11:06I think it's quite obvious.
- 11:08But it's just going to make sure that, let's say, that transition into
- 11:10January and eventually February is just going to be a lot smoother.
- 11:14And also back to whatever you're celebrating at this time of year, it's not
- 11:19all about money either.
- 11:21You can be creative even if you don't have a fat pile of...
- 11:22of cash sitting there to splurge on what would seem to be, anyway, a traditional
- 11:29way of celebrating.
- 11:31You can be creative with your holidays.
- 11:31And it's about a lot more than money, I think, Max.
- 11:35Yes, it's definitely a lot more about money, in my opinion.
- 11:37It's about spending time with family, loved ones, friends, and all of that.
- 11:41But the financial aspect has a tendency of creating a lot of issues, in my opinion.
- 11:47It is a very, very large source of stress.
- 11:52I think for most of us, let's not even lie.
- 11:55And really, it's all good intentions with the comments.
- 11:59It's nothing sinister or, you know, what's the word I'm looking for.
- 12:03We're not trying to be, you know, making anyone feel guilty.
- 12:06No, not cynical necessarily, but I'm not trying to make anyone feel guilty.
- 12:11It's not a guilt trip.
- 12:12It's just to say, here's a few tips.
- 12:14Keep this in mind.
- 12:15And at the end of the day, enjoy the festive season.
- 12:18And yeah, let's see what happens.
- 12:21Let's hope that we all do.
- 12:22And Mags, thank you very much for that great advice.
- 12:25I hope you have a good Christmas and New Year.
- 12:27And thanks very much for your contributions throughout 2025.
- 12:31That was Mags Haystack.
- 12:32And that was It's My Money.
- 12:34It's My Money was brought to you by Brenthurst Wealth, an award-winning
