- 0:09visit oceanac dot com. Andrew de Chicko is in the
- 0:12house today as we continue along on the offseason. The
- 0:18offseason will take a quick look at the NFC North,
- 0:22one of the most powerful divisions in football. But we'll
- 0:26get a couple of quick takes from Andrew on the
- 0:28final day of Eagles training camp today. And Andrew, I
- 0:32know you're a big training camp guy. The final day
- 0:34of training camp, but the final day of training camp
- 0:37brought some bad news. Johnny Wilson lost for the season.
- 0:41Kind of impact you think. I know it sounds minimal,
- 0:44but I think people thought he might have a little
- 0:46bit bigger role this year.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Hey, Mike, Yeah, it is a little bit more substantial
- 0:51than some may be led to believe. I mean, Johnny
- 0:54Wilson was going to be the four or five on
- 0:57this roster in terms of the wide receiver depth, and
- 1:00he provided more than blocking at least what he's shown
- 1:03this training camp. What I've seen from him is the
- 1:05natural growth and progression in a second year wide receiver,
- 1:09didn't get off to the best started training camp, wasn't
- 1:12playing to his size, But what I noticed within the
- 1:14second half, he was building confidence and really starting to
- 1:18become more comfortable using his size high pointing the football
- 1:21and coming up with contested catches and developing a rapport
- 1:24with the different quarterbacks. So I was really looking forward
- 1:27to seeing what he was able to do. And it's
- 1:29really a shame that this happened. And I watched that
- 1:31happen right in front of me the other day, and
- 1:33it was evident that he was in a lot of pain.
- 1:36So a really tough break for Johnny Wilson.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and obviously they made the trade for Metchi. I'd
- 1:41like to get your thoughts on him, but also Darius Cooper,
- 1:43a guy that you wrote about and everybody seems to
- 1:45be talking about. Does this open the door for and
- 1:48Cooper both did not only make the team but possibly
- 1:51have little roles on the team.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Well, it's interesting because Mechi certainly isn't a lock, but
- 1:56they Eagles didn't trade for acquire somebody this late in
- 2:00the game to really just let him practice for a week,
- 2:03and you're not really able to get an assessment This
- 2:06is an opportunity for Howie Roseman to add another asset,
- 2:09and he will do that in any position of need
- 2:12if he sees fit, if he's going to better the roster,
- 2:15and John Metchi gives Eagles some depth there and obviously
- 2:18that's now needed. But yeah, Darius Cooper's had a really
- 2:21good summer. He shows up every day, makes a play
- 2:23every day. They're not all splash plays and they don't
- 2:26have to be, but that's what got him onto the
- 2:28radar of Nick Sirianni and then from there it was
- 2:31just being consistent every day. He's proven that he belongs.
- 2:34And I've seen a lot of training camp wide receivers
- 2:37have really impactful summers and they're making highlight reel catches
- 2:41and all that, but they don't always manifest into regular
- 2:46season success or able to parlay that into long term success.
- 2:49But Darius Cooper's different. He can absolutely play and he's
- 2:52done everything that he can to earn a spot on
- 2:55the roster.
- 2:55Speaker 1: All right, before we take a look at these NFC
- 2:57North teams, because that's a really good division. Anything that
- 3:01you will be zoned in on, I know the last
- 3:04preseason game was painful for you. Anything you will be
- 3:08zoned in on in this last preseason game.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean the Eagles have a lot of players
- 3:13who have a ton of talent. They put in a
- 3:17significant amount of work, just like everybody else in the camp,
- 3:20and if they don't make it with the Eagles, they'll
- 3:22make it somewhere else. So I'm keeping an eye on
- 3:24running back Montreal Johnson Junior, and he's had a nice summer.
- 3:28Patient runner, good contact balance. I liked them coming out
- 3:31of Florida, physical runner. I would also say tight end
- 3:35Aj Jenkins, He's had some nice moments in camp, big
- 3:39bodied pass catcher, the eagles second best blocker at the
- 3:42tight end position in my opinion. I would also say
- 3:46keep an eye on those backup offensive linemen because they
- 3:48didn't fare particularly well in the preseason in the second
- 3:52game against the Browns. So that's across the board. That's
- 3:55Kendall Lamb who was signed to be the swing tackle.
- 3:58That's Darren Kinnard who has had a nice summer, and
- 4:01the Eagles really like Matt Pryor, who the Eagles are
- 4:03going to be looking at is probably their sixth or
- 4:05seventh at worst offensive lineman. So yeah, that's something that
- 4:09I would look at and then of course the cornerback
- 4:11battle that that's going to play out the rest of
- 4:14that game, and the Eagles have a decision to make there,
- 4:16and then safety. I would be surprised if Drew mccooba
- 4:20and Sydney Brown played in this game. So you could
- 4:23see a lot of Tristan McCollum and Andre Sam as
- 4:26well as Max and Hook the undrafted rookie out of Toledo,
- 4:29And really Tristan McCollum and Andre Sam could be battling
- 4:32for the same position as that fourth safety and Corps
- 4:35special teamer, So that's something to keep an eye on
- 4:37as well.
- 4:38Speaker 1: All right, of course, that game tomorrow right right here
- 4:40on ninety seven to three ESPN's the final preseason game,
- 4:44which means we're down to our two final divisions. This
- 4:46one's the NFC North. This is a good one. This
- 4:49is the Lions. Let's start with them real quick. There's
- 4:52a Lions team, new coordinator on both sides of the ball,
- 4:55new center. Does this change the outlook for you at
- 4:59all of the line with all those changes.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's fair to say. You always have
- 5:05to be mindful of that when you're looking at the
- 5:07season and it's totality, they're probably going to get off
- 5:10to a slower start. They have enough playmakers there to
- 5:13put up a ton of points, but you have to
- 5:15account for that acclamation process. The Eagles also had a
- 5:17lot of weapons last season and a new offensive coordinator
- 5:20in Kellen Moore, and that it's not as simple as
- 5:22going out there and lining up and simply being better.
- 5:25That you have to account for those initial growing pains.
- 5:27So yeah, and the edge rushers for the Lions, I'm
- 5:30not quite amount one hundred percent so on. There are
- 5:33some deficiencies that they may have there on the defensive
- 5:36side there. I don't expect them to be the dominant
- 5:38force that they were last season.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Yeah, you got Gibbs awesome. I know you like Gibbs
- 5:41a lot coming out of the Giraffe last year. You
- 5:44got Iman Ross, Saint Brown, Jamison Williams now for the
- 5:47full season, Laporta at tight end. Still a very explosive
- 5:51offense there. For the Lions, We'll just see how losing
- 5:54their offensive coordinator factors in. And then they had so
- 5:56many injuries on defense last year. Could they overcome those
- 6:00defense Terry on Arnold was their first round pick a
- 6:02year ago. We'll see how that secondary, because they had
- 6:06big problems in the secondary last year. That was one
- 6:08of their issues.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Yeah, so they're gonna have to make sure that that's
- 6:12short up. Obviously, Terry and Arnold's a player that I
- 6:14also like coming out out of Alabama, not more than
- 6:17Quinna Mitchell. Quinnyall was my top raded corner. But yeah,
- 6:21I mean they have some issues desensively that I think
- 6:24you're not quite able to mask it this year as
- 6:27compared to last season.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Green Bay we saw them in the playoffs. Obviously, it's
- 6:31Love Jacobs who they signed last year. They drafted Matthew
- 6:35Golden out of Texas. They got that wide receiving core
- 6:38that everybody always talks about, like they don't have that
- 6:40stud guy the last couple of years, but they just
- 6:42had a bunch of guys. Is this Packers team finally
- 6:46ready to take that next step?
- 6:49Speaker 2: I think they can. That's the team I certainly wouldn't
- 6:52sleep on. I'm you know, say what you will about
- 6:54Jordan Love, but now he has He had a lot
- 6:57of young wide receivers who I liked, including Jayden Reid
- 6:59who was it's a top fifty pick and you know
- 7:02Romeo Dobbs and all that. But now they've added Matthew Golden,
- 7:05who I think is a player that can win over
- 7:08the top and just threatened defense is a little bit
- 7:11more uniquely than the players that they currently had. That
- 7:14should help elevate Jordan Love's game, as should Josh Jacobs
- 7:18as long as he can stay healthy. That's been the
- 7:19big thing with him.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Yeah, in their defense, obviously, we saw them twice last year.
- 7:24Philadelphia saw them twice in the playoff game. You know,
- 7:28the game in Brazil a lot different than the playoff
- 7:30game that opening season to where they ended up. But
- 7:33you know, this is a team on defense that really
- 7:35doesn't have that standout guy. But you wonder is the
- 7:38defense what kind of holds them back?
- 7:42Speaker 2: Well, I mean they have Xavier McKinney, Edrin Cooper, Devonte
- 7:45Wyatt kwy Walker. They have some players there that that
- 7:48can make an impact, but they have a sore spot
- 7:51at corner at one of their corners. I really like
- 7:53Keyshawn Nixon, one of the best kick returners in the NFL.
- 7:56It's not the best kick returner in the NFL. Pretty
- 7:59good ball skills too. He's somebody that started out as
- 8:02a special teamer and has climbed. But yeah, I mean
- 8:05that they have some some areas that are going to
- 8:07be a little bit leaky, but so do most teams.
- 8:10I think offensively is where they're really going to make
- 8:12this leap in twenty twenty five.
- 8:14Speaker 1: We'll see if the defense for the Packers can step
- 8:17up this year for them, obviously they lost both games
- 8:20to Philadelphia last year, and we'll see if they can
- 8:24overtake the Lions. We'll see if Andrew likes them in
- 8:26the NFC North. Good to Minnesota as a team last
- 8:29year that surprised a lot of people because of Sam
- 8:31Donald's play. But let's start with JJ McCarthy. How do
- 8:35you think he will replace Donald in that offense? How
- 8:38will they be different with McCarthy over Donald.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Well, it's it's really an unknown entity. I wasn't super
- 8:46high on JJ McCarthy coming out, and that could ultimately
- 8:49be what holds the Vikings back because you don't know
- 8:53how fast of the start he's going to be able
- 8:55to get out to and in that division, which is
- 8:58figures to be pretty closely contented, I don't know if
- 9:01they can afford to do that And I know that
- 9:03there are some who are pretty bullish on McCarthy, but
- 9:05until you see what he's able to do in the
- 9:07regular season, when the bullets are live, so to speak,
- 9:10it's hard to really forecast the direction that they're going
- 9:13to be able to go. Obviously, justin Jefferson, Jalen Nowhere,
- 9:16they drafted Ty Felton out of Maryland, who I was
- 9:19at his pro day, I'm I'm a big fan of
- 9:21and TJ. Hockkinson's there, Aaron Jones, So yeah, I mean
- 9:26they have enough pieces there offensively, I just have questions
- 9:28about the quarterback, which obviously makes everything go.
- 9:31Speaker 1: I will say their offensive line is, you know, one
- 9:33of the problems with the Vikings over the previous couple
- 9:36of years. Their offensive line has been a disaster. Their
- 9:38line is starting to get a little bit better and
- 9:40that should help them out. But I'm with you. I'm
- 9:42not a big JJ McCarthy guy. But defensively, our buddy
- 9:45Isaiah Rodgers went over there, Andrew Van Ginkle made a
- 9:48big appearance there last year. Byron Murphy juniors out there,
- 9:52They've got some players just a pretty good defense.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I like Jonathan Grenard who's over there too. They
- 9:59have some dudes there that I think can really effect
- 10:02a passer Isaiah Rodgers Byron Murphy on the back end.
- 10:07This is going to be an interesting defense to watch.
- 10:09I think that will be their calling card this season.
- 10:13I do believe that they've done enough in the offseason
- 10:16to really four to five that side of the ball.
- 10:18But offensively, until you see what you get out of McCarthy,
- 10:21I think that can ultimately be what gets them off
- 10:23to a slow start that they may not be able
- 10:25to overcome.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Tell you what the Eagles might have been wishing they
- 10:28kept Isaiah Rodgers at that second corner spot. Right now,
- 10:32we'll get your thoughts on that second corner before we
- 10:34get out of here. Let's go to the Bears. They
- 10:37buzzed last year. They made a lot of moves, but
- 10:39it was a disaster of a season for them. They
- 10:41get the new coach, Ben Johnson's in there now, Caleb
- 10:44Williams year two. They have a bunch of weapons they
- 10:47added to the offensive line. Is this Bears offense going
- 10:51to be a surprise this year?
- 10:54Speaker 2: I think Caleb Williams is going to be able to
- 10:56take a step forward in his progression. I think the
- 10:59addition of Lovelin the tight end out of Michigan should
- 11:02really help him out. He may be an early candidate
- 11:06for having a I don't want being a candidate among
- 11:09those for offensive Rookie of the Year, But yeah, wide
- 11:14receiver Roma Dunza. They have alamodez a Kias. Former Eagles
- 11:19wide receiver DJ Moore is there. Yeah, who should be
- 11:22able to take a step forward. But I'm not quite
- 11:26sure if they have enough there to really make some
- 11:28noise when you look at the Lions and you look
- 11:30at the Green Bay Packers. But on the offensive side, Oh,
- 11:34I can't forget DeAndre Swift as well. He's a really
- 11:37good of the backfield and has some juice.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Well, could the difference maker for them be their defense?
- 11:42And Andrew They've got a pretty good defense last year,
- 11:45our buddy T. J. Edwards is over there. They've got
- 11:48good pass Russ, got a good secondary. Kevin Bayern former
- 11:51Eagles safety, he moved over there, had a pretty good year.
- 11:54Jalen Johnson's pretty strong. I mean, could this defense be
- 11:57the difference for them?
- 11:59Speaker 2: Yeah, Montes Sweat. I think Jalen Johnson you can make
- 12:02an argument for being the top cornerback in the NFL,
- 12:06the TJ. Edwards to Tremaine Edmonds. They have a fortified
- 12:09second level of that defense. That's really what they're going
- 12:11to have to hang their hat on, because offensively, I
- 12:14sort of see them as middling. Now, do I believe
- 12:18that Caleb Williams is going to to to progress here
- 12:21and really start to refine some areas of his game.
- 12:24I do. I think there's enough pieces there for him
- 12:26to do so. But I don't know if they're going
- 12:28to be consistent enough week to week with that formula
- 12:31that they run there in Chicago to move that forward
- 12:35defensively where they're gonna have to make their mark.
- 12:37Speaker 1: All right. The NFC North maybe one of the more
- 12:40competitive divisions in football. The Lions, Packers, Bears, and Vikings.
- 12:44How's it going to finish up?
- 12:47Speaker 2: I'll do Packers, Lions, Vikings, Bears.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Okay, Vikings and third Bears at the bottom. That one's
- 12:56gonna be a lot of fun. We'll see if the
- 12:57Lions take a step back. A lot of people think
- 12:59they might take that step back this year. Let's quickly
- 13:02take a step back before we get out of here.
- 13:03We mentioned Isaiah Rodgers. That second quarterback spot kind of
- 13:07give us your breakdown of that, because that's probably the
- 13:10most unknown of all the battles right now at Eagles camp.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Yeah, two months ago, before training camp even happened, I
- 13:17posed a question of my buddy, which Eagles offseason loss
- 13:21will they be mostly impacted by? And I said, and
- 13:24he said whoever? And I said, Isaiah Rodgers is my
- 13:27pick because he's a plug and play guy. You know,
- 13:30he fits in the system. You now how he fits
- 13:32in the locker room and the culture in Philadelphia, and
- 13:35he has some good ball skills. If you sign him,
- 13:37you don't have to deal with this musical chairs that's
- 13:40taking place this summer. So you have Keeley Ringo, you
- 13:44have Jacoryan Bennett, you have a Dori Jackson, and Mac McWilliams,
- 13:47the rookie fifth round pick out at UCF. He's been
- 13:50cross training, he spent most of camp at Nickel, he's
- 13:52been working outside the last week or so. The Eagles
- 13:55roy like him. I'm not quite sure he's ready for
- 13:57an expanded role, but at Dory Jackson and if Egals
- 14:00had to play a game today, would be their starting cornerback.
- 14:03I don't know how long that would last, but there's
- 14:05something to be said, for a veteran who is steady,
- 14:07if hunts spectacular, probably going to give up some stuff underneath,
- 14:11but you know what he's going to give you. He's
- 14:12not going to be as high variance as some of
- 14:14the other players that are the options. Ultimately, I think
- 14:18Jakorean Bennett is the best of the bunch, and I
- 14:20think it's only a matter of time before he leaps
- 14:22Adori Jackson and fully masters the defense and can go
- 14:26out there, and the Eagles will feel comfortable putting him
- 14:29out there on a full time basis.
- 14:30Speaker 1: I like it Bennett. The trade there for Bennett that
- 14:33happened right before I left. And of course they get
- 14:36Jacoreyan Bennett for Thomas Booker, and Booker looks like he's
- 14:39going to start out there for the Raiders. The Eagles
- 14:41get Bennett. Fair trade for everyone. We'll see if Howie
- 14:44Roseman has another deal up his sleeve. He is Andrew
- 14:47to Checko. This is football at four. You heard it
- 14:49right here on the Sports Bats Live on ninety seven
- 14:51to three ESPN Our Division previews. They end next week
- 14:55with the NFC East. You know what that means. Season's
- 14:58about to start, Andrew, season is about to start and
- 15:01we always appreciate your time.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Pal. Thank you,
