- 0:00Speaker 1: What if I told you that your brand could be
- 0:02loved by millions of people just with one product launch? Well,
- 0:07it can, thanks to licensing. Licensing has been one of
- 0:10the key reasons for the Udi's success, doing over $ 100
- 0:14million in famous licenses such as Disney, Warner Brothers, Nickelodeon,
- 0:20even Pokemon. In this video, I'm going to go through
- 0:23exactly what to do and what not to do so
- 0:26that you can launch licensing for your brand. Doesn't matter
- 0:30if you're a tiny brand and you're just getting started,
- 0:32these tactics can work. But it's really, really important that
- 0:36you understand all of the risks with licensing as well,
- 0:39so that you don't actually lose money rather than make it.
- 0:43At the end of 2020, I was really trying to
- 0:45figure out where I could take the hoodie. At that point,
- 0:48I'd created all the prints myself using meme culture. Every
- 0:52time I would see memes pop up, such as avocado
- 0:55on toast, there was a famous politician that said, Australians
- 0:58should stop eating avocado on toast that they could save
- 1:01on a home loan. I would launch that hoodie and
- 1:03it would connect with those people. Same with the sloth
- 1:06reading the book. People could just understand who that hoodie
- 1:09was meant for. But I was running out of ideas
- 1:12and I didn't know where to take it. Then we
- 1:14decided to start working with Warner Brothers, one of the
- 1:17biggest licensors in the world. Growing up, I was a
- 1:20huge Friends fan. I used to just watch Friends nonstop.
- 1:24And I thought it had the perfect affinity with the
- 1:26Udi because people just love watching TV in their Udi.
- 1:29Warner Brothers also had Harry Potter, which I was also
- 1:31a big fan of. So naive to what was going
- 1:34to come next, we decided to just grab these assets,
- 1:37put them on the Udi and do our first license launch.
- 1:40Still living with my parents at the time, I remember
- 1:42launching it and we did over $ 500, 000 in just a
- 1:45few weeks. Completely selling out. If I actually knew how
- 1:50to do inventory management back then, it could have been
- 1:52a lot, lot bigger. You see, licensing is the process
- 1:56of borrowing another company's IP and aligning it with yours.
- 2:00Let's say, for example, you have a T-shirt brand. You
- 2:02could contact anyone from Coca-Cola to Disney, even a celebrity,
- 2:07and ask if you can use their assets or their
- 2:09likeness to support your marketing or your product development. You
- 2:13can either sell it on your website or sell it
- 2:15in other places, and then you just need to pay
- 2:17them what's called a royalty. There are also so many
- 2:20different types of licensing that you can do. For example,
- 2:23you might've seen the word Gore-Tex on a lot of
- 2:25outdoor equipment. This is actually a company that creates a
- 2:28material that is really, really trusted. Even Nike is putting
- 2:32Gore-Tex on their sneakers because people love the material so much.
- 2:36And it helps align a reputable brand like Nike known
- 2:39for its quality to another reputable brand known for its quality.
- 2:43There's also other forms of licensing, like music licensing. For
- 2:46those that are old enough to remember, you might remember
- 2:49the Cadbury ad, where there's the gorilla playing the drums
- 2:52to In The Air Tonight. And finally, those that are
- 2:54Alex Hamosi fans, he talks about licensing his actual marketing
- 2:58framework to gyms all the time, taking his business to
- 3:01a small business, allowing it to scale up to lots
- 3:04and lots of gyms. For the Udi, we did this
- 3:06really creative Nutella campaign where we would get people to
- 3:10buy jars and they can win one of 500 Nutella Udis.
- 3:14People would be going through the shopping aisles and seeing
- 3:16the Udis printed on these Nutella labels, aligning our brand
- 3:20with their really lovable, delicious brand. People would then go
- 3:23to the website, sign up, and would be able to
- 3:26capture email marketing leads as well. There is really no
- 3:29limit on licensing and it depends on how creative you
- 3:32want to get. But it's really important that we understand
- 3:36why branding works. Sure, there's the emotional connection part. These
- 3:39brands have built so much emotional connection over the years
- 3:43that you can now leverage on your product. After all,
- 3:45branding is earned in drips and lost in buckets. And
- 3:48these people have just been collecting drips for so long.
- 3:52But there's actually a technical element, something that a lot
- 3:54of people are underestimating in the e-commerce community. The best
- 3:58analogy for licensing is phishing. Let's say every ad you create,
- 4:02let's say it's a Facebook ad. You're casting that ad
- 4:05out there and you're attracting one type of customer. Licensing
- 4:08is pretty much changing that bait so you can attract
- 4:10two types of fish. You've got your initial customer audience
- 4:14that might like your product anyway, but then you've got
- 4:17this whole nother audience that is really attracted to your
- 4:20product as well. So you're basically merging the customer audiences.
- 4:24This is why licensing is so important on digital ads
- 4:27because Facebook is able to find these new pockets of
- 4:30audiences that it can target your product to, bringing them
- 4:33over into your corner. But the problem is not many
- 4:36people know how to do licensing. I certainly had no
- 4:39idea how to get it started. But before I teach
- 4:42you that, let me firstly do a shameless plug about
- 4:45our new mentorship program. No, this isn't a course. No,
- 4:48this isn't applicable for people doing under a million dollars revenue.
- 4:52I've got a free discord for that. You can get
- 4:54all of your information free. I'll leave a link for
- 4:56the description for the discord. But my new mentorship is
- 4:59called Daily Mentor, where we're going to be going over
- 5:02this stuff. Product development, inventory management, cash flow forecast, all
- 5:06of those kind of things. What are the best licensing
- 5:08partners to reach out to for your brand? We're currently
- 5:11waitlisted at the moment, especially for our Australia-based groups. Definitely
- 5:15send me an email, click on the link below, and
- 5:17we'll get you on the waitlist. Alrighty, back to it.
- 5:20So the first step is identifying your ideal licensing partner.
- 5:24There are so many different ways to achieve this. The
- 5:27one that I think you should do is go to
- 5:29a brand that you look up to that shares a
- 5:31similar audience to you and look at the licensing partners
- 5:35they've collaborated with. That doesn't mean you need to do
- 5:37the exact same licensing partner. Remember the analogy of phishing.
- 5:41You really want to get these new audiences, get something
- 5:44new in front of them and align your brands. But
- 5:47you may want to do something similar. For example, if
- 5:49they've done a Bluie license, one of the biggest licenses
- 5:52in the world right now, you might wanna do a
- 5:54similar kids show as well. The other thing I recommend,
- 5:56if you're gonna try to work with one of the
- 5:58major studios, there are gonna be some limitations on that
- 6:01around your size, which I'll get into in just a minute.
- 6:04But a great way to pick your licenses if you
- 6:06are working with them is just looking at the upcoming
- 6:09movie launches. For example, our Barbie collaboration was one of
- 6:12our best because they did such a great marketing effort
- 6:15and the movie was so good and we just dropped
- 6:17it at the perfect time. Another great way to find
- 6:20awesome licensing is heading over to Vegas, no, not to party,
- 6:24but going to one of the licensing expos over there.
- 6:26There'll be a lot of booths that you can go up,
- 6:29learn more about niche licenses or big licenses, and you
- 6:32can actually get contacts there. One of the main things
- 6:35that will determine whether you actually get a response from
- 6:38a lot of these licensing is size. So Disney and
- 6:41Warner Brothers, they have so much legal paperwork that they
- 6:43need to go through that they're not going to profit
- 6:45if you're a really small brand. This is when you
- 6:48need to niche down. Worst of all, you're probably not
- 6:51going to profit because of what we call a minimum guarantee.
- 6:54This is really standard in the industry. What that means
- 6:58is to protect the collaboration, these major licensors will set
- 7:02a minimum amount that you need to sell. Let's say,
- 7:04for example, your royalty is 10% of your sales. You
- 7:08may go to this licensor and say, I'm going to
- 7:10sell $ 500, 000 worth of product. They might want to go, okay,
- 7:14I'm going to set the minimum guarantee at 40,000 because
- 7:17you're saying you're going to sell 500,000, which would be
- 7:19a $ 50, 000 royalty because you're paying them 10%. But we
- 7:23really need to hedge our bets and we're going to
- 7:25put a minimum guarantee at 40,000. If you failed to
- 7:28launch the product or failed to sell as many as
- 7:31you forecasted, then you are going to be up for
- 7:33that extra 50,000. Imagine if you didn't launch any product
- 7:36because it didn't work out, you would still be up
- 7:38for that money. This is why working with really niche
- 7:41licenses and contacting them in the initial stages is really
- 7:45beneficial because they're probably gonna have really low MGs or
- 7:48maybe no MGs at all and they just really wanna
- 7:50work with you. This is why I encourage you to
- 7:52think outside the box with your licensing collaborations. Casetify, one
- 7:56of the direct-to-consumer e-commerce darlings did an amazing collaboration with DHL.
- 8:01I'm pretty sure Supreme even worked with DHL. If you
- 8:04can align your brand properly, you'll be rewarded for this creativity.
- 8:08So now you've identified your license, you really need to
- 8:11contact them. So if you're at the Vegas trade show,
- 8:13you're going to get a card, which is great. But
- 8:15if you're just reaching out on LinkedIn, you've really got
- 8:17to sell yourself. These people would get so many messages.
- 8:21Sometimes these brands do have portals where you can actually
- 8:24submit it. If not, just contact the founder on Instagram.
- 8:27Just send them a mock-up product that you've created of
- 8:30the overlap of your brands. And make sure you say
- 8:32what you think you can sell. Get them really excited
- 8:35about the collaborations. Another big part of this process is
- 8:38actually creating a forecast, as I mentioned earlier. When I
- 8:41was starting the Oodie, I had no idea how to
- 8:43create this, but it is really important if you're working
- 8:46with some of the bigger licenses, they're going to want
- 8:48spreadsheets of like exact sales that you're going to be
- 8:51able to do. And it can put a lot of
- 8:53stress on a lot of your teams, such as your
- 8:55product team, your operation team and your finance team. So
- 8:58make sure you're ready. And then the final step is
- 9:00the funnest part, which is where you're collaborating. For the
- 9:03more established licenses, you'll get access to what they call
- 9:05a portal, which is just all of their assets. You
- 9:08can scroll for days through these things, and you can
- 9:11talk about them, about adding them to your product. Then
- 9:13you need to put a great marketing strategy together. The
- 9:16marketing is key, and a lot of these licenses will
- 9:19actually need to approve every single email, every single product,
- 9:22every single product image that you're putting their brand on,
- 9:25which makes sense. They're trying to protect it. The execution
- 9:28of all of this process is really important. You need
- 9:30to be professional. The better you execute, more that they
- 9:33will want to work with you. About a year and
- 9:35a half we saw the Australian Football League was selling
- 9:37a very similar product to us. We went to them
- 9:39and said let us do it, let us see if
- 9:41we can do it better. We custom designed every single
- 9:45team mascot and put it on the Udi. We even
- 9:47set up these fun interactive booths outside of the stadium
- 9:51where people could come and win Udis and sales were
- 9:54incredible and now we're just extending with them because it's
- 9:57going so well. Licensing is a whole lot of fun
- 10:00and I hope more e-commerce brands adapt it earlier. Don't
- 10:04forget to like and subscribe.
