- 0:01Jeff Legwaald is our Broncos insider Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five Pro Football the
- 0:07insider I've covered Jeff leg Wall. His appearances are always must listen radio.
- 0:13You learn a lot. Ront five Betsafe Colorado, the exclusive club for passionate
- 0:18gamers and betters across the state. It's Leggy on Altitude Sports Radio ninety two
- 0:23five. Here's Naden Anti driven by Colorado off Road. Final minute of the
- 0:35opening half right now in Buffalo, a two touchdown lead on the Steelers at
- 0:40twenty one to seven. As yes, we have a Monday afternoon MLK Day
- 0:48football game on CBS right now. Thank you snow in Western New York.
- 0:53Let's jump out to the ramos Law hotline car accident. You need ramos Law
- 0:58medical doctor and attorney ramos Law dot comer join right now by our pal,
- 1:00Jeff Langweld of ESPN. Leggy. Let's let's start with the game that is
- 1:08in progress right now, Buffalo and Pittsburgh. I think every football fan on
- 1:15the planet would like to see Buffalo get this victory and get a Chiefs Bills
- 1:21game in Orchard Park next week. But from what you've seen out of this
- 1:23one, so far, are you giving the Steelers a puncher's chance to get
- 1:29back in this thing? I always do, mate. I mean, they
- 1:33have there's almost nothing about them that has a playoff profile in the playoffs other
- 1:38than the Steelers, and they have Mike Tomlin. That's it. Yeah,
- 1:42they get out game, they get out score. I mean, it's just
- 1:45unbelievable. But if they can, they've kept it close enough where they can
- 1:49keep running the ball, and that's really their shot is to just pound away
- 1:55at them and get enough possession to keep it out of Josh Allen hands,
- 2:00because without TJ. Watt, that defense is just not the same. You
- 2:04know, if he's in there today, you know, now you're really talking,
- 2:07but you can see. And then when they take Hayward out, you
- 2:12know, because he can't play every snap. The Bills have been smart enough
- 2:16to either check into the run right away or or already have one going.
- 2:22But I think those two things impact the Steelers. But if they can run
- 2:28the ball in the second half and keep it close enough to do that,
- 2:30they have a shot. And like one bad turnover turns into a bad day
- 2:35for the Bills, and that in that scenario, well, the good news
- 2:38is Josh Allen, sometimes known for a bad turnover. Yeah, well that
- 2:44good news for good news for Pittsburgh certainly. It really is amazing how the
- 2:50Bills have gone from that sort of this well rounded team to oh my god,
- 2:55we're just gonna let Josh do everything and we hope it works out.
- 3:00Ye, Jeff, I don't know if you heard or not. They did
- 3:02alright on the streaming numbers the other night. I'm sure Amazon has really psyched
- 3:07to hear that a playoff game out did anything that they did. Are we
- 3:12looking at the future of the NFL playoffs? For all the griping that went
- 3:16down and Congressman getting upset and all that other stuff that should NFL fans be
- 3:23ready for more paywalls for a playoff game? In your mind? Well,
- 3:27you know, I think this one was sort of a quirky paywall. I
- 3:30mean, I know a lot of people who just sort of have peacock as
- 3:35part of their table package or whatever, so they didn't consider that like a
- 3:40paywall for a playoff game. They already had it. So I mean,
- 3:44I think it depends on how you think about it. I do know that
- 3:47the NFL is such a long and really you know, hard earned relationship with
- 3:55over the air television that more people can see. It would be hard for
- 4:00me to believe they would totally abandon it now, you know, will they
- 4:05split stuff up and all of that. I can see that because they're you
- 4:10know, even the players union wants them to pursue as much revenue as possible
- 4:14and and I don't know, we all gripe about officiating and pace of games
- 4:18and boring and Thursday night games stink and all of these things. And every
- 4:24year, you know, forty nine of the top fifty watch shows or NFL
- 4:29games. So as long as it's in that wheelhouse, I think anything's possible.
- 4:35But again, it would be really hard for me to believe, you
- 4:40know, as long as you know, however long I go cover in the
- 4:43league, it'd be hard for me to believe they're off, you know,
- 4:46sort of the over the air as much consumption as possible television in that time.
- 4:53Jeff Lagweldon ninety two five broad to You My Bet, Save Colorado,
- 4:56the exclusive club for passionate gamers and betters across this Leggy. The career of
- 5:01Jared Goff, it has been quite the tail. I mean, here's a
- 5:05guy won a lot of games, including going to a Super Bowl as a
- 5:12member of the Los Angeles Rams, and then ultimately the organization deciding, yeah,
- 5:15well there's a hard ceiling on what you're capable of being able to do,
- 5:19and will make a blockbuster move in order to be able to upgrade.
- 5:23And you can't argue with anything the Rams did. They won a Super Bowl
- 5:26as a result of having done that, or largely in part because they did
- 5:30all of that. But there is Jared Goff, a guy whose confidence was
- 5:34shot and a guy who I still think had a lot of development to do
- 5:38as an NFL quarterback, and Dan Campbell and Ben Johnson ultimately, you know,
- 5:43sort of reconstruct him into being a very good NFL quarterback. Not elite
- 5:49of the elite, but Jared Goff is like a solid second tier NFL quarterback
- 5:55and a guy you can absolutely win games with. As you've talked to people
- 6:00the league, what insights can you give us, How did the Lions do
- 6:02this to get this kind of play out of Jared Goff? Well, I
- 6:06think may like any quarterback, if you give him a physical front, and
- 6:12then the Lions invested in protection, and I don't think enough of that is
- 6:17done in the salary cap free agency NFL. I think I think that's the
- 6:20hardest position group to hold together over the long term. It's the hardest for
- 6:27gms to sort of dig their heels in and invest in when when the lower
- 6:32and the public clamor is for always to go for skill and all of those
- 6:39things. But I in my experience, I have seen more quarterbacks undone by
- 6:46what's in front of them rather than what's in their helmet. And because of
- 6:51the dominos fall then because then your confidence goes, then your footwork goes.
- 6:57You get hit a lot, you're hassled a lot, you can't go through
- 7:01your progressions, and you stunt your growth because of things that are out of
- 7:08your control. And it's one of the smartest things the Chiefs did with Mahomes,
- 7:14It's one of the smartest things the Ravens did with Lamar Jackson. You
- 7:18have to have the whole piece of the puzzle. And I think often quarterbacks
- 7:24either totally flame out or even mini flame out because the teams aren't ready for
- 7:30them to play when they do. And I think that happened to Golf a
- 7:32little bit. I think there was one thing when he came out I believe,
- 7:38and you know, again this is my memory, so good luck.
- 7:40But I think he was sacked like eighty three times in college, and I
- 7:44know that was a concern of mine when I broke him down that year,
- 7:47is he took so many hits and he took them clean and they weren't they
- 7:54weren't brush offs or spinouts. I mean, he took them clean. And
- 7:58I thought that might be a cern in his early development, and I think
- 8:01it was a little bit. But he is. He has done the work
- 8:05too to be where he is and they have helped him be that. And
- 8:11again you're talking about enough talent to be one of the top two players on
- 8:15the board for a lot of teams that year. What's so wild about it,
- 8:18Jeff, is that that thing that you talk about right there, and
- 8:20you may have seen this breakdown according to next Gen stats when he was not
- 8:24pressured yesterday for me, clean pocket golf twenty one of twenty one, two
- 8:30sixty six and a touchdown when he was under pressure. I believe one of
- 8:35six for eleven yards was what he did in that game yesterday. It's wild.
- 8:39Again, the talent level. You got to remember, the talent level
- 8:41is top two player on the board. Yeah, at least twenty teams.
- 8:46I talked to you before. Now, I never I often don't put the
- 8:48quarterbacks that high myself, but teams had him in the top two. That's
- 8:54a lot of talent your working. That's not like a surprise arrival, you
- 8:58know, for it's just but it just shows you, especially in today's NFL
- 9:03with you know, simulated pressure has become the rage on defense, and uh,
- 9:09the more you can keep your quarterback clean, the more availability's going to
- 9:13have down the field because those simulated pressures come at a cost defensively, and
- 9:18you do leave holes and you give you keep your guy clean. They're going
- 9:22to find him, all right, Jeff, we expecting Caleb Williams to let
- 9:26us know he's coming on into the draft. What's your way too early evaluation
- 9:31before the combine on him? Oh? Just you know, gifted, a
- 9:35gifted player, but you know he he will have the transition A lot of
- 9:39guys do who have been the best athlete on the field for as long as
- 9:43they can remember. You know, how long can I hold the ball?
- 9:48When to say when on a play? You know in college, you if
- 9:52you're athletically better than most of the other guys, you can basically run around
- 9:56as long as you want until something good happens that goes away. Even for
- 10:03the best of the best in the NFL, they closed the windows on you
- 10:07faster, they dissect you quicker. You get like three weeks before they start
- 10:13really taking you apart. And that's the transition for even a guy that's gifted
- 10:18as Caleb I personally. And again, you know, you may get a
- 10:22lot of argument from folks. I don't see the level of progression and accuracy
- 10:28I saw on c J. Stroud when I looked at Stroud last January.
- 10:33But as we are seeing now, that's an awfully high bar. And it
- 10:39doesn't mean Caleb Williams is not an awesome player, but we're seeing how good
- 10:45c J. Stroud it really is as well. Yeah, along those lines,
- 10:48Jeff, I mean, for what Stroud has done is rookie year.
- 10:52This was not a Texans team. Even if you like the fact that they
- 10:56could add CJ. Stroud and will Anderson in a single draft, would you
- 11:00should have? That's phenomenal, But to not only win your division in year
- 11:03number one, but then to go in and blow out a team in the
- 11:07playoffs, the way that they did in Stroud showing the kind of touch on
- 11:11the football, the kind of accuracy that he has, the way that he
- 11:16has elevated those skilled position guys lost his best receiver in the Denver game,
- 11:20Like what CJ. Stroud is doing? Kind of to your point, you're
- 11:24not supposed to be this good, this fast, No, but he's I
- 11:31thought he was special. And I look, my top one hundred is my
- 11:33top one hundred. It's out there. But I argue plenty with a lot
- 11:37of people. Last year, I just saw deep ball accuracy I had not
- 11:41seen in a very long time. And look, I think most Pro Days
- 11:46and combine throwing sessions, I call him prom night. You know you're gonna
- 11:50look good. It's just the way it is. And but his throwing,
- 11:54the fact he threw a at the combine, the fact he did it was
- 12:01cool. And the session I've done that every combine in Indy. I haven't
- 12:07been in all the workouts every year, but in all the years I've been
- 12:09in the workout, that's the best throwing session I've ever seen an Indy with
- 12:15unfamiliar receivers. He was on the numbers every time. And that was receivers
- 12:22who weren't consistent with their depths and the routes and all those things. But
- 12:26that session was I looked at Lewis Riddick and I said, this guy is
- 12:31so QB one and Lou looked right back at me and he said, it's
- 12:33unbelievable. And it was a great session. And again that's a small,
- 12:39tiny, tiny piece in draft evaluation, but it showed you his composure in
- 12:45a big moment. And he's done nothing but show that. You know,
- 12:48since you I was saying this to Nate earlier, you always tell us that
- 12:52when the Mike Shanahana offense is run properly, it was most difficult to defend
- 12:58indefensible. When gone right, it's indefensible. Did Lafloor give us the best
- 13:03example of that yesterday? Those first seven drives? That's that's classic, Mike.
- 13:09I mean, that's I felt like, you know, it's two thousand
- 13:11and five and I'm watching I'm watching them do their thing, Jake watching Plumber
- 13:16and everybody do their thing, or you know, it's it's ninety eight and
- 13:22John and those guys are doing their thing, and that is that offense under
- 13:26center play action. Linebackers have no idea false steps everywhere at the snap.
- 13:33You know, when I look at draft guys, I freeze the snap.
- 13:37I freeze the video at the snap to see who takes the wrong step.
- 13:41And yesterday, if you froze the that game at the snap, you would
- 13:46have seen false steps by probably all three linebackers, especially in the first half
- 13:52when they were playing for real. All three linebackers probably at false steps on
- 13:56all of those play action plays. Talking to Jeff Legweld here on a Monday
- 14:01afternoon, Jeff Legwald brought to you by Betsy of Colorado, the exclusive club
- 14:05for passionate gamers and betters across the state. Leggy we saw reports today,
- 14:09including one from your colleague Adam Schefter, that the Chargers have completed today's head
- 14:15coaching interview with Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh. The combination of Jim Harbaugh, weirdest
- 14:22man in America, and Dean Spanos can the Chargers land the big target on
- 14:31this one? I think this isn't a franchise that fired a guy after a
- 14:35fourteen and two seasons, so you never know what they're going to be up
- 14:39to, right. I think this is a part where you don't know yet.
- 14:43But the next part is where you wonder about harbwall He has gone this
- 14:46far with many teams before is even told a couple teams, including my understanding
- 14:52is the Broncos that yeah, he thought he would like that job and has
- 14:58not. So you know, we'll see if it goes anymore. But I
- 15:05think he will have to convince the Spano says that you're you're not going to
- 15:11rein in the quarterback as it were. I think that's the challenge if you're
- 15:16hardball, you got to you got to present that whole thing. You know,
- 15:20are you going to be a four tight end offense and do all of
- 15:22those things that I think some of that would be very good for Justin Herbert
- 15:28frankly, but I think he will have to tell the Chargers or any other
- 15:31team. Uh you know what, we see a little of the Miami Dolphins
- 15:35or the forty nine ers in your offense too. I think that's part of
- 15:39it. All. Right, When do you think the next part of the
- 15:43cycle heats up with Johnson extending out as everybody who's the guy everyone's waiting on?
- 15:48How about I put it that way? Is there a candidate now?
- 15:52Well? I think now the Dallas thing is really going to be the the
- 15:56Mondo Domino, you know, is is if because you know, Jerry Jones
- 16:03told people, you know, after the game down there, that he would
- 16:07take a couple of days, not that Jason Garrett offered a pretty astute observation
- 16:14on the postgame show yesterday was that he, in his experience, Jerry was
- 16:19always really good talking about the coaching and the players one or two days after
- 16:26the game, and then the emotion would kick in and the big move would
- 16:32get made somehow. So I think that's I think most people in the league
- 16:36are kind of waiting that forty eight hours to see what happens there. But
- 16:40he I think everyone and I know in the league has said McCarthy would be
- 16:45judged on the last game the Cowboys played, And if that's going to be
- 16:49the judge, I don't think all those twelve and five seasons will be enough
- 16:55to save him. And if Bill Belichick is really in play there, the
- 16:59internet will explode, Yeah, sure will. A situation where Bill would go
- 17:03working for Jerry would be pretty entertaining. And yet you know Bill Parcells took
- 17:07that gig once upon a time, So there is a world where maybe Bill
- 17:11wants to do it. Legy. Last thing, anything that you have seen
- 17:15in the postseason thus far that has altered who you think will ultimately be picking
- 17:21up the Lombardi Trophy. I mean, we haven't seen that the two brute
- 17:26force teams play at Baltimore San Francisco, but look, you know it's played
- 17:32out the way we've talked about with you guys. I mean, physicality is
- 17:37playoff football. And if you're not physical and Cleveland, you know, for
- 17:41example, was not physical. That was not the Cleveland defense anybody saw all
- 17:47season except the physical. This time of year, you're getting shoved around,
- 17:51like Miami should have run the ball forty seven times yesterday, and they tried
- 17:56to be who they were, and it's just metality is everything this time of
- 18:00year. Always keep your eye on that. Jeff Lagwell, good stuff is
- 18:04always, buddy, Thank you, nice fellas. We'll see it.
