- 0:00Hi, everybody. Welcome back to another episode
- 0:02of the Elon Musk podcast. I'm your host, William Walden.
- 0:04And in today's episode, we're going to cover two major
- 0:08developments in the realm of Elon Musk's ventures.
- 0:10First, we're going to talk about Tesla's upcoming giga factory in
- 0:15Mexico and what that means for infrastructure both locally and
- 0:18potentially globally. And we'll switch gears and talk
- 0:22about Tesla's recruiting and the use of the X platform for that,
- 0:27and also the challenges that Tesla faces when it comes to
- 0:30growth and advertising. Tesla is in an early planning
- 0:34stage for a new Gigafactory located in the state of Nuevo
- 0:38Leon, Mexico, and the company is collaborating with a local
- 0:41government to determine the necessary investments in
- 0:44infrastructure to make this factory as successful as
- 0:48possible. And according to Reuters, this
- 0:51factory will produce Tesla's $25,000 car, as is expected to
- 0:57significantly stimulate economic growth in that region.
- 1:01For the factory to run smoothly, Tesla has requested several key
- 1:04pieces of infrastructure in Mexico, including road and rail
- 1:09networks and electric energy substations.
- 1:13A Tesla's new factory will certainly be a monumental
- 1:15addition to Mexico's industrial sector, not just as an asset for
- 1:19producing cars. It's seen as a catalyst for
- 1:22regional growth and development, and the government of Nuevo Lyon
- 1:26has acknowledged the importance of building necessary
- 1:29infrastructure like roads, schools, and health centers to
- 1:32support this new venture. However, there's still much to
- 1:36be done. For smooth operations, Tesla
- 1:38needs an electric energy substation and electric lines to
- 1:42be built where the plant will be constructed.
- 1:45Additionally, a railway yard is requested to help in
- 1:49transporting materials to the factory.
- 1:51These needs present both challenges and opportunities for
- 1:54local governments and companies in the area.
- 1:57Now, just last month, tests to secure the environmental permits
- 2:00necessary for beginning the initial construction phases.
- 2:03This is a significant step, providing the company 26 months
- 2:06to prepare the site and carry out construction activities.
- 2:10The aim is to complete the plant by the end of 2025, a highly
- 2:14anticipated milestone for Tesla in Mexico.
- 2:17This isn't an isolated initiative for Tesla though.
- 2:22The company has been exploring several locations worldwide,
- 2:25including India and Thailand for additional factories.
- 2:29But the Mexican factory is the most recent to receive official
- 2:31confirmation and the stakes are very high.
- 2:34With permits in hand and a deadline insight, the clock is
- 2:37ticking to get everything in place.
- 2:39The project has drawn considerable attention not only
- 2:42for its economic prospects, but also for its ambitious timeline.
- 2:46Securing the environmental impact permits was a significant
- 2:49leap forward, but now comes the complex task of getting the
- 2:53infrastructure bill a task that Tesla can't be done alone.
- 2:57Now collaboration with the government and possibly other
- 3:01private entities will be crucial and necessary for Tesla to move
- 3:05forward with this. Now, this undertaking showcases
- 3:08Tesla strategic focus on global expansion.
- 3:10It also highlights the complexities involved in
- 3:13developing the infrastructure required for such a large scale
- 3:15project and the need for electric substations.
- 3:18Electric lines and railway yards are not just logistical
- 3:22requirements, but vital components for Tesla's long term
- 3:25success in the region. Now switching gears a little
- 3:27bit, let's talk about Tesla Recruiting's recent update on
- 3:32the X platform. The company announced the job
- 3:34roles can now be viewed through people's X's profile.
- 3:39This development paves the way for companies to use similar
- 3:42features to inform people about job openings they're looking to
- 3:45fill. This new feature brings another
- 3:47dimension to the X platform, which is increasingly becoming a
- 3:50multi faceted social media site. Now users have favorably
- 3:55compared this feature to LinkedIn.
- 3:57Although the X platform aims to be a little bit above and beyond
- 4:01being a mere employment focus, Platform feature updates aimed
- 4:05to make it a comprehensive social media destination,
- 4:08encompassing features like live streams and long form written
- 4:12work. Now the potential of X as an
- 4:14Everything app is massive, the Elon Musk even projecting that
- 4:18the All in one social media platform could reach a market
- 4:21cap of $1 trillion. And the evolution of X from what
- 4:25we've seen so far shows a trend toward increasing user
- 4:28engagement and providing a wide array of features that can make
- 4:31it an indispensable part of people's digital lives.
- 4:35One more item on the agenda today is Tesla's growth
- 4:38strategy, or more specifically, the debate about whether Tesla
- 4:42should spend on major media companies.
- 4:45Gary Black, a fund manager and Tesla supporter, argues that
- 4:48Tesla should reconsider its emphasis on price cuts as a
- 4:51growth strategy. Online polls and social media
- 4:54discussions indicate that many Tesla fans and investors share
- 4:58this sentiment. The issue of Tesla's
- 5:00advertising, or the lack thereof, was raised during the
- 5:04last annual shareholder meeting. Elon Musk showed openness to the
- 5:07idea, but so far Tesla's advertising spending has
- 5:10remained minimal. Instead, price cuts have been
- 5:13the primary strategy to boost sales and interest, much to the
- 5:16frustration of shareholders like Gary Black who think it's not
- 5:19working efficiently. Now Gary Black's point price
- 5:23cuts are effectively a marketing expense brings a new perspective
- 5:27to the discussion. With Tesla's U.S. market share
- 5:29among EVs slipping and a significant reduction in gross
- 5:33margins. Black and others argue that a
- 5:36focused ad campaign might be a better use of resources.
- 5:40And the absence of advertising has put Tesla in an interesting
- 5:43contrast with competitors like Ford and General Motors who are
- 5:46experienced marketers. The challenge for Tesla then,
- 5:50lies on whether it will adjust its strategy to include
- 5:52advertising, which could help the brand resonate with a
- 5:55broader audience now. All right folks, that's it for
- 5:58today's episode. We've covered a lot of ground,
- 6:00from Tesla's Mexican Gigafactory and its infrastructure
- 6:03requirements to the ever growing X platform in the ongoing debate
- 6:06around Tesla's advertising strategy.
- 6:09These topics illustrate the multifaceted challenges and
- 6:11opportunities that lie ahead for Elon Musk and his ventures.
