- 1:14You're like me.
- 1:15What do you know about me, kid?
- 1:16You think this is a choice?
- 1:18Podcasting like, this is a lifestyle?
- 1:20Is that what you think, kid?
- 1:21This is a sentence.
- 1:22Hello, geekologists, and welcome to another episode of Systematic Geekology.
- 1:26I am Andy Walsh.
- 1:28I'm joined by Evan Garcia, and we're here to talk once again about Spider Man.
- 1:32Brand new day.
- 1:33I finally got a chance to see it, and I have some thoughts.
- 1:36And Evan had some more thoughts.
- 1:37So we're gonna have a conversation and we're happy to have you joining us.
- 1:41Howdy, Evan.
- 1:42How are you doing this?
- 1:42Even doing good, man.
- 1:44Just.
- 1:45Just excited to talk.
- 1:48Spider man and a film that I don't really like, but I like a lot.
- 1:53I'm weirdly kind of in that tension, but.
- 1:57But.
- 1:57But I've seen it three times, so it's like.
- 2:00It's weird.
- 2:03Yeah.
- 2:03There, you know, I can see where.
- 2:04Even if.
- 2:05Even if it doesn't go where you want it to go or do what you want to do, there's a lot to unpack in this film and a lot to talk about, and hopefully we'll get to get to some
- 2:12of those things.
- 2:13Cool.
- 2:14But before we do that, what are you geeking out on?
- 2:18We'll do a little lightning quicking out on here.
- 2:22Yeah, I was doing.
- 2:25What was it.
- 2:26What was it that I was.
- 2:28Oh,.
- 2:30The Ninth Jedi came out.
- 2:32The series that is the anime, the Star wars anime.
- 2:39The.
- 2:40The whole series came out.
- 2:41Wonderful series.
- 2:43To me, that's when a Star wars gets very philosophical with the right and the wrong.
- 2:51That's my kind of Star wars.
- 2:53And it did it in spades.
- 2:54It was.
- 2:55It was beautiful.
- 2:57It was great.
- 2:58It covered how I view about nihilism and, And.
- 3:04And existentialism, and it was able to throw in some Jedi and.
- 3:10Oh, man.
- 3:12Pretty good stuff.
- 3:13Pretty good stuff.
- 3:14Awesome.
- 3:14I haven't had a chance to check that out yet, but I've heard nothing but very positive reaction so far.
- 3:20So I'm looking forward to having a chance to sitting down with that one.
- 3:22Nice.
- 3:23I've been, as one might imagine, I've been geeking out on The X Men 97 show, season two.
- 3:29Yeah.
- 3:30Just had the season finale yesterday and we won't get into that too much now.
- 3:35We'll save that.
- 3:36I think we talked about having a separate episode to wrap that up and hopefully in the next 72 hours, we'll get some more X Men news from.
- 3:48That's right.
- 3:49And so hopefully we'll have both of those things to talk about and maybe some More X Men things and who knows what other kind of goodies.
- 3:57Maybe there'll be some other things out of D23.
- 3:58Could be more Star wars stuff or who knows?
- 4:01I don't know.
- 4:02What we don't know.
- 4:03Yeah, we don't exactly.
- 4:04So we're geeking out about the future possibilities that are open to us.
- 4:11Perfect.
- 4:12Excellent.
- 4:12So yeah, thanks everybody again for joining us.
- 4:17We are always happy to have folks listening to us, listening to us go really deep on what we're excited about, like Spider Man.
- 4:25And so if you want to rate and review us, if you want to like this video, whatever you can do to boost us so that other people get to share in these conversations as well.
- 4:37You can also actually share them, right?
- 4:39You can repost them them on social media, tell a friend, send them a link, whatever you need to do to help people know what you're geeking out about with us.
- 4:50And you can also support us financially.
- 4:52You'll find a link to that in the show notes or the description of the video or wherever, however you are watching and or listening to this, you'll find those details.
- 4:59You can follow that link and become a financial supporter like Jeanne Mattingly, who has been a supporter of us for a while and we are very appreciative of her support and thank you for that.
- 5:10And so if you signed up and send a little money our way on a one time basis or a regular basis, you can get your own shout out as well.
- 5:20And you'll get access to the website and there'll be extra content there that as a member you'll have access to.
- 5:28You'll be able to vote in polls about some of the things that we cover.
- 5:32You can go to the Comic Book Channel and ask us to cover a comic book in a future episode of Comic Book Catch up, all kinds of good stuff.
- 5:41So please think about doing that as well.
- 5:43And thank you to everyone who does or will do that.
- 5:47We really appreciate it.
- 5:48It helps to make all this stuff possible in terms of hosting and all that kind of logistical stuff.
- 5:55It helps.
- 5:57Those things aren't all free, the software to record and the hosting and all.
- 6:00So we appreciate that you're helping us to get things out there.
- 6:05So.
- 6:05And there'll be a bonus question for this episode that you can look forward to if you are one of those folks who has access to the bonus content.
- 6:14I haven't preloaded this.
- 6:15This is kind of an off the cuff episode.
- 6:17But I will, I'll give Evan a little bit of time to think about it and give you listeners a tease as to what to expect.
- 6:23The bonus question will be, what other MCU movie would have been improved with the addition of a secret Mutant X Men character?
- 6:31Oh, that is a great question.
- 6:34So you can look forward to our answers to that and we can look forward to coming up with those answers and then talking about them.
- 6:42So with that, we can go ahead and start talking in more detail about Brand New Day.
- 6:49I suppose perhaps it already feels that way, but definitely from this point forward, there will be some.
- 6:56There will be some spoilers.
- 6:57We'll be talking about everything that goes on in the film thematically and plot wise and so forth.
- 7:01So if you haven't yet seen the film, please feel free to do so.
- 7:04But hopefully by now you've had a chance since lots of people have seen it.
- 7:08And also, if you haven't, I pity you or I sympathize with your need to avoid spoilers and the difficulties in doing so.
- 7:19I don't really know why they kept some of the secrets about this movie that they did, but they did.
- 7:22And now those secrets are pretty widely around.
- 7:26So apologies if you were trying to avoid those and either we or someone else revealed them to you before you saw the film.
- 7:32But anyway, let's talk about it's boiling time.
- 7:35Yes, let's talk about Brand New Day.
- 7:38I've been rambling a little bit, but since I haven't had a chance to talk about this film, I'm gonna go for it.
- 7:42Yeah, my host privilege and ramble a little bit more about how much I enjoyed this film.
- 7:47Just sort of at the high points.
- 7:50First of all, we've got Destin Daniel Cretton's name on there as the director.
- 7:54I absolutely think that Marvel and Sony should do whatever they need to do to stay in the Destin Daniel Cretton business.
- 8:01This was such a cinematic Spider man movie in a way that the and had such a feel for Spider man as the superhero of Manhattan.
- 8:10And what makes that distinctive and the flair of just swinging the city that, you know, I think the previous films perhaps intentionally didn't fully explore.
- 8:24That may have been a deliberate choice rather than just a limitation or, you know, lack of vision or whatever.
- 8:29I think they were trying to kind of really highlight the parochial nature of Spider man and Peter Parker as high school students or as one high school student.
- 8:39But yeah, now Spider man is an adult and a man of the world and the galaxy.
- 8:46Right?
- 8:46He's been to space and so Manhattan is his playground now and not just his neighborhood in Queens.
- 8:52Is that a band.
- 8:56Yeah, so just visually, there was a lot going on that was fabulous.
- 9:01The action, which was blessed on set by the visit of Jackie Chan himself with former or current members.
- 9:09Not exactly sure how it breaks down, but folks from the Jackie Chan stuff team helped coordinate with the action and that, you know, that really shone through.
- 9:17There were some excellent action set pieces.
- 9:19Spider man doing things that only a spider can or only a spider man can.
- 9:24And yeah, so that was, that was just really fun to see.
- 9:26And then, you know, the movie has some real, some real heart and some real, some real ideas in its mind and, you know, is a surprise, but maybe not so much of a surprise.
- 9:38A secret X Men film as well.
- 9:40And snuck it in there.
- 9:42You know, as.
- 9:42As much as I have been kind of wishing and hoping that, okay, let's just, you know, work on the Multiverse saga and the Avengers and then we'll get to the X Men and do the X Men proper and
- 9:53kind of like have them be their, their own thing or kind of get a fresh slate there.
- 9:58You know, the reality is that X Men have kind of been seeping into the MCU for a while now.
- 10:02We had Kamala Khan reveal that she's a mutant with the X Men animated show theme song in the background.
- 10:12That was cool.
- 10:14Which was a nice little nod.
- 10:15We've had Wolverine and Deadpool, or Deadpool and Wolverine as a film with one time a Fox X Men character is coming in and hypothetical X Men character Channing Tatum as Gambit finally making appearance.
- 10:33And, you know, we've had multiverse of madness.
- 10:35Yeah, multiverse of madness brought in, you know, Patrick Stewart.
- 10:40The Marvels took us to.
- 10:43Oh, yeah, possibly the Fox universe or some other universe with a similar history with Kelsey Grammer's Beast.
- 10:51So, you know.
- 10:51Yeah, it's not been a clean break.
- 10:53It's not been a fresh start.
- 10:55It is, you know, we're just kind of working them in here as we can and where we want to.
- 11:00And this was the biggest of that so far with newly cast Jean Grey Sadie Sink serving as the antagonist for much of the film.
- 11:13And I was nervous for, as an X Men fan, I was nervous for about the first hour.
- 11:21I don't know, I wasn't looking at it.
- 11:21Did you know that she was going to be Jean?
- 11:24You know, I knew.
- 11:25The same way that everybody else knew that it was heavily rumored, but that they cast a redhead in a role that they weren't specifying.
- 11:34You don't cast Sadie Sink for a three minute cameo as some character that appeared in three issues or whatever.
- 11:45You cast Sadie Sink because you have big plans for this role in this film and possibly down the road and being reductive, Sadie Sink has red hair, so it must be a red hair character.
- 11:57I didn't necessarily buy into that.
- 11:59But also, you know, it is what it is.
- 12:02But, yeah, if it wasn't, you know, the whole Mary Jane thing, like, that never really made sense to me.
- 12:08I saw that.
- 12:09I remember that.
- 12:10Yeah.
- 12:10Yeah.
- 12:11I think that would be a huge disservice to Zendaya and to the character development that they've been doing that.
- 12:17You know, just because her name technically isn't Mary Jane Watson, it's Michelle Jones.
- 12:21Right.
- 12:22The idea that you could sneak in another mj, I think would just be.
- 12:25Would just have been confusing.
- 12:26So, you know, of the.
- 12:28Of the names that had been floated around as fan theories slash rumors slash whatever, Jean Grey was the one that made the most sense.
- 12:36Even though Jean Grey in a Spider man movie.
- 12:38What.
- 12:38What would that be like?
- 12:40Yeah, so I didn't know going into the film, but it was not a surprise.
- 12:45Right.
- 12:45That was kind of the most likely scenario.
- 14:00But, man, I was just like, why are we introducing Jean Grey as the villain?
- 14:04Is she working with the Scorpion?
- 14:06Is she involved in organized crime in the Marvel universe?
- 14:09Like, what.
- 14:09What's going on here?
- 14:11This is not how I want my X Men to make their debut in the mcu.
- 14:17But as soon as they revealed that everything she was doing was to get her sister back, and as an X Men nerd, as soon as the name Sarah came up, I knew that that was the name of her
- 14:29sister.
- 14:30I wanted to ask you because to me, that was a real deep pull.
- 14:35I was like, okay, I did not know that one.
- 14:38That was cool.
- 14:38Yeah.
- 14:38You could.
- 14:39You could read hundreds of issues of X Men comics and never encounter Sarah Gray as a name or a person on panel.
- 14:47She appeared.
- 14:48You know, I don't have an exact count, but, you know, she appeared in a handful of.
- 14:51Of issues.
- 14:53I think has been name checked more often than actually drawn on panel because she, you know, she disappeared.
- 15:01And so, you know, that.
- 15:02Sure that the trauma of that.
- 15:05The weight of that was something that loomed sometimes over Jean more than her actual presence as a character on the page was really a factor.
- 15:17So, yeah, so it was a deep cut.
- 15:19But she recently made probably her most significant appearance in the Jean Grey ongoing title that was published last year or two years ago.
- 15:34Oh, really?
- 15:34Yeah.
- 15:34There was a Jean Grey comic and a big arc in that was the Return of Sarah Gray.
- 15:40And was it really?
- 15:41Sarah Gray and what's her whole situation?
- 15:44So she was fresh in the minds of current X Men readers.
- 15:51Yeah.
- 15:51So once it became apparent that Jean was looking for her sister who had been kidnapped by damage control, then it all clicked.
- 15:59And.
- 15:59Okay, yeah, you don't come between Jean and her sister, whether it's her biological sister or her X Men sisters.
- 16:05That made total sense.
- 16:07And then the way that it unfolded and that Spider man realizes that there's been an error and works with her so that they were no longer at odds.
- 16:21That's a classic comic book trope.
- 16:22The heroes have a misunderstanding, they're at odds, and then they work together to resolve the issue.
- 16:28So in the end, I was very pleased with how.
- 16:31With how the Jean Grey and X Men of it all was.
- 16:33Was handled.
- 16:34Yeah, the, the guys, Christian and, and, and Kevin and I made some slides of it and some reels for it, but they, but they.
- 16:46I really covered that part.
- 16:47Right.
- 16:47Like, they did a great job in, in not sacrificing the Spider man to bring in the.
- 16:55The X Men.
- 16:56So, yeah, the way that Spider man served the role of the healing force of the Marvel universe, the hug that everybody needs, the shining light of optimism that everybody needs, that's a good role for Peter Parker to play.
- 17:13When they did the recent Marvel DC crossover comics, they paired up Superman and Spider man to kind of compare how they serve similar roles in their respective universes.
- 17:25And that's a big part of it.
- 17:26And I think that's spot on that both of them are kind of the, you know, when you're having a bad day, when all else seems.
- 17:32Seems dark and grim, they'll be the one to provide a smile or a ray of hope.
- 17:38And so I thought it was perfect to have that kind of be the way that Peter influenced Jean Grey in this film.
- 17:48That was one of my hang ups with it because I was expecting the Brand New Day to be what we got after this movie.
- 17:58You know what I mean?
- 17:59Like, I thought that we would already be in the Brand New Day.
- 18:03I realized what the movie was doing.
- 18:05I'm like, oh, we're not quite there yet.
- 18:08So I was so.
- 18:10So I kind of related to the people that had kind of the same argument with the first season of, with the first season of Ahsoka.
- 18:23They.
- 18:24We have already learned all this stuff.
- 18:25Why can't we go to the version of Ahsoka that we want to see?
- 18:30And I said, no, you, you, you.
- 18:33You first kind of need this, this moment to do to, to get to that day.
- 18:40But that being said, what do you think about the cameos and the other characters in it too?
- 18:46Yeah.
- 18:47So you know Florence Pugh, always a delight.
- 18:50You know that Yolanda character.
- 18:52Potatoes.
- 18:53Yeah, Just small potatoes.
- 18:57Perhaps not the best judge of the magnitude of potatoes, but otherwise an entertaining presence.
- 19:04Always happy to see her turn up.
- 19:07To me, that's the secret sauce that I think has been missing from a lot of the Multiverse saga films, is the way that a character that you love from another film can or TV show or whatever can show
- 19:21up for five minutes, three minutes.
- 19:25In the case of Steve Rogers and Thor, the dark world, like 10 seconds, that little Loki turns back into Captain America for 10 seconds.
- 19:35Just those little things that remind you that these are connected stories and also that keep these characters fresh in your mind and give the audience opportunities to fall in love with these characters more or again or for the
- 19:51first time.
- 19:52Right.
- 19:53And I think that's what people have been missing from these MCU movies.
- 19:58And why, even as good as this film was the Avengers, Doomsday of It all is a bit like, well, are we excited for this movie or not?
- 20:06Because there are so many characters that are going to appear in that film that we haven't spent that much time with recently or at all.
- 20:12It just hit me that it's kind of ironic that we had a whole saga, a whole phase dedicated to, to the possibilities of the multiverse, yet we still haven't seen characters for like five, six years.
- 20:33It's like, how did that go?
- 20:35Like, who said who?
- 20:38Like, I want to.
- 20:40I.
- 20:41I want someone.
- 20:44I want to know who is the person that said that they can put Shangshi in something.
- 20:49It's like, that's insane.
- 20:51Right?
- 20:51Exactly.
- 20:53That's exactly the kind of thing, you know, your Shang cheese, your she Hulks, your she Hulk.
- 20:58You know, Ms.
- 20:59Marvel, she would have been great, you know, should be popping up.
- 21:01Hulk, son.
- 21:02Hulk.
- 21:03Yeah, you know, Rip, you know, Scar.
- 21:07Hercules.
- 21:08Clear Hercules.
- 21:10Yes.
- 21:11All of, all of these characters that.
- 21:13Appeared, only Russell Crowe as Zeus, even like, yeah, you have freaking Russell Crow.
- 21:18Yeah, yeah.
- 21:19All these, all these characters that, that, you know, were promised, teased in post credit scenes that so far haven't.
- 21:26Haven't materialized and who knows if, if they ever will.
- 21:28I.
- 21:29What was his name?
- 21:30Star Fox.
- 21:31Yep.
- 21:32Harry Styles is Star Fox.
- 21:33Yeah, the troll.
- 21:36Oh, that's right.
- 21:38Yeah.
- 21:38Pip the troll.
- 21:40So they just announced that they're doing a Marvel Star wars crossover.
- 21:46Yes.
- 21:47And I proposed a joke online and I took Patton Oswald's character or characters from agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
- 22:01The, the twins.
- 22:03Yeah.
- 22:04Yeah.
- 22:05And I.
- 22:05And I named one of them Philly and the other one Buster for filibuster.
- 22:12Okay, so.
- 22:14But do you get that reference?
- 22:15Yeah.
- 22:16From Parks and Rec.
- 22:16Yeah.
- 22:17Yes.
- 22:18Yes.
- 22:18I was like, come on, this is a perfect opportunity.
- 22:22Yes.
- 22:24That's a clever poll because.
- 22:25Yeah.
- 22:25That's all about the Star Wars Marvel crossover.
- 22:29Yeah.
- 22:29So all those, all those characters, you know, and some of that is, you know, plans changing and whatever.
- 22:35Some of that.
- 22:36I would.
- 22:37Would not be surprised if some of that was still the.
- 22:40The COVID of it all that, you know, you needed to limit your casts and limit things because people had to isolate and, you know, I don't.
- 22:47I don't know all that went into those protocols, but it seemed like it, you know, especially in those first couple years, 2021, 2022, you know, filming had to.
- 22:57Had to look very differently.
- 22:58And so maybe bringing in an actor for, you know, three minutes of screen time just didn't make a whole lot of sense because of.
- 23:05They were all the behind the scenes logistics.
- 23:08Yeah.
- 23:09But that being said, what did you like of the ones that we did get?
- 23:12But yeah, so I.
- 23:13Right.
- 23:15Yelena was a lot of fun.
- 23:17Hulk was.
- 23:19You know, I think it was a little bit less of an opportunity for.
- 23:21For the Hulk to shine.
- 23:24And.
- 23:25Or maybe I just, I.
- 23:26I really enjoyed Professor Hulk, the smart Hulk from Endgame.
- 23:31I wasn't mad about him.
- 23:32Yeah, he was cool.
- 23:33I'm a little disappointed that we haven't seen more of that version of the Hulk that we've kind of gone in she Hulk.
- 23:41We saw a lot of Banner, which Mark Ruffalo is charming as Banner, but I did appreciate the smart Hulk, the Professor Hulk of it all.
- 23:53And then here we're kind of back to Hulk and Banner are at odds with each other and all.
- 23:59And maybe some of that.
- 24:01That is Jean Grey messing with his mind as he kind of says.
- 24:07So it makes sense story wise.
- 24:10But I still.
- 24:12We didn't really get to see, I think that character shine in the same way that Yelena really gets to shine.
- 24:20And then the Punisher, I guess also partly it's the Hawkeye thing from Avengers.
- 24:25He spends a lot of his time on screen, not.
- 24:28That's right.
- 24:28Not really himself.
- 24:30Right.
- 24:31True, true.
- 24:32Yeah.
- 24:32And then the Punisher, you know, that was, I think, my favorite incarnation of Jon Bernthal's Punisher that we've seen.
- 24:40Because I'm not a huge fan of the Punisher and I'm not a huge fan of the Grimdark.
- 24:46Have to murder everybody.
- 24:48Kind of vibe with the Punisher.
- 24:50I think he works best in this kind of mode as a foil for other characters, as a contrast to other heroes in the Marvel universe, to remind us what makes them heroic, to remind us of the sacrifices and
- 25:03the challenges of taking the path that Spider man and Daredevil and some of these other guys choose to take.
- 25:12He's a living, breathing cautionary tale, basically.
- 25:15Yes.
- 25:16Yes.
- 25:16And so I thought that worked very well.
- 25:19And because he's a charismatic actor, he was charming and a lot of fun.
- 25:23Let me tell you something.
- 25:24In this.
- 25:25In this film, I felt bad.
- 25:26My daughter afterwards, she's like, no, I need to go and watch that Punisher special and all.
- 25:31Like, I really like the Punisher.
- 25:32Like, that's fine.
- 25:33And you can watch those things.
- 25:34But let me warn you that that is not exactly the same.
- 25:38It's the same character, but it's not the same vibes.
- 25:40Right.
- 25:40He's.
- 25:40He's not.
- 25:42Right.
- 25:42Not quite as charming, especially in.
- 25:45In the One Last Kill episode.
- 25:48Yeah.
- 25:48But, yeah, so I thought.
- 25:49I'm trying to think.
- 25:51I get.
- 25:51I guess Metzger from Damage Control also counts as a.
- 25:56As a cameo, as a named entity.
- 25:59But, yes.
- 25:59Not one I'm super familiar with.
- 26:02So the, The Damage control, they are kind of their own kind of cameo, because I didn't realize that they went far back as the first Tom Holland, Spider Man.
- 26:16Right.
- 26:17And probably before that, I was like, oh, wow, I completely forgot about that.
- 26:21Yeah.
- 26:21You know, pine D in the first film represents damage control.
- 26:25And I think at one point there was a notion of doing like, a damage control sitcom or something really cool.
- 26:31But that.
- 26:31That never materialized.
- 26:32But it is.
- 26:33It is interesting that none of them have.
- 26:36You know, we've had three or three different damage control representatives.
- 26:40I don't.
- 26:40I don't think damage control really shows up in Far From Home.
- 26:43But we've got.
- 26:44We had that one guy in no Way Home.
- 26:45I forget the actor's name or the character's name.
- 26:47He's from home.
- 26:48He's from the war.
- 26:49He's from the show with a William Stryker in it where he's the businessman.
- 26:55Right.
- 26:55Succession.
- 26:56Succession.
- 26:57There you go.
- 26:57Yeah, there you go.
- 26:58Yes.
- 26:58Yeah.
- 26:58So he was in no Way Home, and then we had Tramell in this film.
- 27:03So that, you know, I, I.
- 27:05That's maybe a little bit of a missed opportunity from.
- 27:07From.
- 27:08He's.
- 27:09Severance.
- 27:10Severance.
- 27:11Yeah.
- 27:11Yeah.
- 27:12From all those memes.
- 27:13Yes.
- 27:14Femme dancing.
- 27:15Yes.
- 27:16Yeah.
- 27:17So that, you know, that does hurt the continuity a little bit of remembering that you know, this, that they've been kind of a constant thorn and Spider man side.
- 27:23Yeah, yeah.
- 27:24But you know, it's still, still cool that there is that element that kind of connects all these films.
- 27:29Oh, and DeWolf.
- 27:31Detective DeWolf is also a character from the, from the comics.
- 27:36Yes, that's what I heard.
- 27:38Yeah.
- 27:39Yeah.
- 27:40Creation of a fun presence.
- 27:42Yeah, yeah.
- 27:43She added a lot to the film.
- 27:44Creation of Pete, of Peter David, one of my favorite comic writers who, who passed away.
- 27:49Thank you.
- 27:50Not that long ago.
- 27:51So it was nice to see him.
- 27:53I see him, you know, in that list of special thanks at the end.
- 27:57Thank you.
- 27:58And nice to see one of his, his creations on screen.
- 28:02I don't know how you know, a similar character.
- 28:04You know, she appeared in a very different story.
- 28:06So it's, you know.
- 28:07Yeah, not exactly a Christian was saying that.
- 28:09Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 28:09Not exactly a one to one mapping.
- 28:12You know, if you got to have a detective character.
- 28:14Right.
- 28:15Use one that exists on the page rather than inventing something new so that the comic book creators get their moment of recognition.
- 28:24She was very, she felt very A Commissioner Gordon or like a Detective Gordon.
- 28:33Yes, yeah.
- 28:34And the Spider man Sony PlayStation games have a different police character.
- 28:42And I'm blanking on the name, but who plays a very similar role in Spider Man's life in that game of kind of calling him with tips and asking for his help and so forth.
- 28:52So it was that kind of dynamic, but a different name to the character.
- 28:56What did you think of the surveillance aspect of it and how she comments, hey, that sounds illegal.
- 29:07And Peter Parker just kind of goes, yeah, probably.
- 29:10I'm like, bro, what?
- 29:12Yeah, that that might be the part of the film that sat.
- 29:16Because that was weird.
- 29:17The worst with me.
- 29:18And part of why, you know, especially was nervous going like, well, if we, if we're ruining Jean Grey and we're ruining Spider man by making him this, you know, master of a surveillance system or whatever.
- 29:29Like, I'm not sure where I like where this is going.
- 29:31Where are we going with this?
- 29:33Yeah.
- 29:33And I still, I'm not thrilled that that was more kind of a joke and didn't really deal with the consequences of that or the implications of that.
- 29:43You know, especially thinking about, you know, it was 16 years ago, we had the Dark Knight pull that.
- 29:49Yeah, pull that bit.
- 29:52And that's true.
- 29:53You know, at least acknowledge.
- 29:54Right.
- 29:54That this is probably not a good idea.
- 29:56This is too much power.
- 29:57We did not learn one person to have and so burned it down at the end.
- 30:02And so I'm not sure that justified Batman's usage of it in that film, but at least acknowledged that there, there are issues here, there are problems that don't you know that this is not just an unalloyed good.
- 30:13And so, yeah, to have Peter do that and not really.
- 30:18Not really second guess, it may, you know, maybe they'll develop that further in future films.
- 30:25One thing I do want to see that them.
- 30:27I do want to see them developed is the fact that he is building the technology that's going to control the X Men that the ODC has now.
- 30:39He's like, I want to see a Christopher Nolan Oppenheimer Spider man film now.
- 30:49Yeah, I mean, you definitely, definitely could do that.
- 30:52Or they could, you know, they could drop that and it'll never get mentioned again.
- 30:55Right.
- 30:56That there was just that one prototype and it got smashed and now it no longer exists.
- 31:00But yeah, I mean, that's certainly a big, A big theme that recurs in the X Men comics is Sentinels even.
- 31:08Yeah.
- 31:08Can you control mutant powers?
- 31:10Can you suppress mutant powers?
- 31:12Can you get rid of mutant powers?
- 31:14We obviously saw that in the Last Stand and possibly I don't think any of the other films have a cure storyline or anything like that.
- 31:23But there's other notions of inhibiting powers and the Sentinels and all that.
- 31:28So yeah, they could be planting some seeds there that will be picked up in the X Men film.
- 31:32That could be.
- 31:34That could easily be the plot of the X Men movie.
- 31:36Whenever we get that with Jake Schreier or like I said, it could never get mentioned again.
- 31:42And I'm okay either way.
- 31:44I don't love that it's something that Peter Parker made, but he clearly comes to realize that maybe it wasn't such a good idea either for himself or for other people.
- 31:54And so that kind of fits in the comic books.
- 31:58That role goes to Forge.
- 32:01Forge makes a gun in the 80s that if you zap somebody with the gun, it takes away their mutant powers.
- 32:09Nice.
- 32:10Okay.
- 32:11And he kind of has to live with, you know, realizing that he made this thing and what it, what it could be used for and kind of has an Oppenheimer, you know, storyline of I did it because I
- 32:21wanted to see if I could do it and didn't necessarily, you know, it's not my department to decide how it gets used, but oh, well, maybe it should have been.
- 32:30So I kind of want to see a.
- 32:33I want to see Forge, Mr.
- 32:35Fantastic and a Dr.
- 32:37Doom kind of blue sky something, you know, like I want them to team up almost.
- 32:44That will be Something that I think, yeah, there's something there.
- 32:48Yeah, yeah, I like it.
- 32:50I'm not mad at that idea.
- 32:51Well, yeah.
- 33:52Cool, cool, cool.
- 33:53So you wanted to talk about the process theology of this film or your thoughts about how process theology relates to this film.
- 34:04So I'm very curious to hear what you have to say about that.
- 34:07Sure.
- 34:12It's my understanding of process philosophy, which is still pretty basic, but it was pretty weird because confirmation bias works in this in a very mysterious way sometimes because just a few days before watching the movie, I'm listening to
- 34:33a podcast with a friend of the show, Josh Patterson, and they.
- 34:40So.
- 34:42Jeez.
- 34:44The.
- 34:44So.
- 34:45So a process theology is if, if you know, you can kind of correct me on this, but it is based kind of on the idea that everything is in relation to something else.
- 35:03We cannot live in, in complete isolation.
- 35:09Like, like, like the sky is only blue because of the particles in the air that are refracting with the light and stuff like that.
- 35:21And like things are relational and that, and that aspect of, of process philosophy blends into the theology side of it.
- 35:37And that's what hooked me in when it's.
- 35:42It was kind of the linchpin where I decided, oh, I can still be a Christian and still have these non objective kind of thoughts.
- 35:57And because of what?
- 35:59Because what?
- 36:00Because what?
- 36:03Because on the podcast that I was listening to with Josh, I remember him describing a feeling that I had growing up.
- 36:20I had the feeling that I could never read my Bible properly and the shame mechanism that came from that because I could never just go by myself and kind enough read something and process it for me, quote unquote.
- 36:40So I've always had that kind of lingering.
- 36:45And through my, through my deconstruction, I found out that I probably have some HDHD tendencies.
- 36:56And so that kind of explained the physical side of why I might feel that.
- 37:05But what process helped was I could not.
- 37:11I made me feel okay with the fact that I can be that I don't see things, that I rely on the relationship of others to see my worldview and seeing.
- 37:30And seeing a spider man kind of through some certain ways, learn that lesson that you can't just do things by yourself.
- 37:40You have to.
- 37:42You, you have to have your community and that and that.
- 37:49And have that attention of the other person.
- 37:54So I just found that connection to it of the relativity side of things and that it just was.
- 38:03It's just a sense of validation that, that I was like, huh, I was not expecting that from a spider man film.
- 38:11So.
- 38:13But that was about it, that and yeah, yeah, cool.
- 38:20Yeah, that, that, that makes a lot of sense.
- 38:22I was, I was sure I had no idea where you were gonna go with this, so.
- 38:25Sure.
- 38:25But I was excited and that makes a lot of sense, the idea.
- 38:28Yeah.
- 38:29So, you know, spelling it out a little bit more.
- 38:31Right.
- 38:32In the follow up, in the aftermath of Spider man, no way home, where Dr.
- 38:36Strange has to use magic to make everybody forget.
- 38:40Everybody forget that Peter Parker existed.
- 38:41I'm a little bit fuzzy on actually what, what was erased from the world, but certainly the fact that Peter Parker and Spider man were the same person.
- 38:49You know, everybody who knew that forgot that and in the process seemed to have forgotten their history with, with Peter Parker.
- 38:55And so, yeah, as this film opens, he is very much just trying to do everything on his own, avoiding all kinds of interactions with anybody that he had previously had a relationship with, I think.
- 39:12To try to keep them safe, which is.
- 39:16That's a honorable thing to do, but that can get kind of messy too.
- 39:20Yes.
- 39:21And so, yeah, so as the film unfolds and, you know, Jean Grey, as he learns that Jean Grey is dealing with her own, you know, issues of isolation and abandonment and so forth, they kind of both help each
- 39:32other to figure out that it's okay to need people in your life and that part of what defines us, like you said, is our relationship to everything else around us and everyone else around us.
- 39:44So.
- 39:44Yeah, that's a really good observation.
- 39:48You know, I think there's also an element, you know, of, you know, my experience with process theology kind of comes indirectly through learning some things about open and relational theology.
- 40:01Right.
- 40:02Same with, you know, other friend of the podcast, Thomas J.
- 40:06Ord, who was on an episode about the film Minority Report, talking about these, these topics.
- 40:14Great episode.
- 40:16I think there's also some element there of the idea that Spider man is not a finished product.
- 40:24There is not some essential essence to Spider man, that once he got bit by that spider, now he's become that thing and he will just always be that essential Spider man thing, but that there's an unfolding to, to
- 40:39his Spider man ness as well.
- 40:40And you know, this film, you know, by kind of relating it to the, the developmental stages of, of spiders and other arachnids.
- 40:49And, you know, they molt and they go through, through transformations in their life.
- 40:53Right.
- 40:53That we, we become different, different people over time.
- 40:58And that becoming is in some ways just as, as essential or not more essential than our, than our properties or features.
- 41:07Sometimes I kind of think of it in terms what is all this process and relational and openness kind of boil down to.
- 41:14And I think it's an emphasis that verbs are just as important as nouns.
- 41:19At least becoming is really what things are about as much as being something.
- 41:29Yeah.
- 41:30So that's what the al hyphen is in.
- 41:33In Spider man, right?
- 41:35Yes.
- 41:37It leaves a little space for growth, for change.
- 41:41That's a fun thought about that.
- 41:45And hopefully it'll help us to remember that there is a hyphen in Spider Man.
- 41:49Yes.
- 41:50Yes, that is.
- 41:53One of my favorite things to do on social media is I don't even post something.
- 41:59I just go to make a post and I do the hashtags and you know how they.
- 42:07They try to autocorrect for you and sometimes I like to misspell it and see who else has also misspelled it.
- 42:17For me.
- 42:19It's so much fun to see all the weird spellings people put for.
- 42:24For.
- 42:24For, like.
- 42:26For Star wars and for Spider man and stuff.
- 42:29Yeah.
- 42:29But yeah.
- 42:30Yeah, that's the process part that I felt like I could add to it.
- 42:37Very good.
- 42:38Were there other thoughts about the film that you wanted to talk about or anything else that we think we need to get into?
- 42:43The.
- 42:44I saw some video at.
- 42:46At a con that Rosario Dawson had a deleted scene where she was the one that kept his secret safe at the hospital of Peter park.
- 42:58And she was the one that was with the suit and stuff like that.
- 43:01I was like, oh, that's all right.
- 43:03That would have been clever.
- 43:05Yeah.
- 43:05That would have made a lot of sense and would have been a nice nod to the reintegration of the Netflix side of the world.
- 43:13But there was a lot going on in this movie.
- 43:16I can see where that.
- 43:17Maybe I can see why somebody might have decided that that was one too many characters and elements to add two.
- 43:22I think.
- 43:23What, like two hours and like, 20.
- 43:25Minutes this movie was, I think, yeah.
- 43:27If not more than that.
- 43:29And a lot of, you know, a lot of characters, a lot of faces to keep track of and.
- 43:35But that's the thing with everything that I've talked about this film so much with people online and stuff, but I still can.
- 43:44I still can't get over the fact that it's just so boring, this movie.
- 43:49I could feel the two hours, man.
- 43:51Like, I just can't.
- 43:56The film commits the.
- 43:57The one sin that I can't get over, apparently.
- 44:02Wow.
- 44:02Okay.
- 44:03Yeah.
- 44:03It's just so boring.
- 44:05It's just like I know what's happening and that's okay because I like Spider man and I love all the characters and it's just like grinding fingernails on.
- 44:18On Mount Vesuvius.
- 44:19Like, what is happening on my.
- 44:24On my third viewing, it took everything in me to not pull out my phone to do the slides for the recording that I was going to do the next day.
- 44:33I was just like, ah, man.
- 44:37Well, it kind of sucks.
- 44:39But, yeah, I'm sorry that.
- 44:40That was your experience.
- 44:40I was.
- 44:41I was dialed in.
- 44:42I was really hooked on.
- 44:44Right on.
- 44:44And, you know, part of that may have been just like the anxiety over Jean Grey.
- 44:49And then once.
- 44:50Once I was bought into what they were doing, just like the excitement of, oh, okay, here we go now.
- 44:54Like, it's.
- 44:55Sure, sure.
- 44:56You know, but, yeah, I can see if you.
- 44:58If you were bored by the film, then.
- 44:59Yeah, it was a lot of film to be bored by.
- 45:02It was a lot.
- 45:04And seen it three times.
- 45:05Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 45:06Which is.
- 45:07Yeah, sure.
- 45:08One more thing that I wanted to flag thinking about the, you know, the element of Spider man being on his own and then connecting with folks.
- 45:16Michael Giacchino, who did the score for this film and all the previous Tom Holland Spider man films.
- 45:20Right, right.
- 45:22You know, it's maybe a little bit obvious once you hear it described, but it's also, you know, lots of things are.
- 45:28And.
- 45:28But you're coming up with them and executing them well.
- 45:31Still is the challenge.
- 45:33So he took the theme that he had created for Spider man for the earlier films and he removed notes from it.
- 45:40So when the theme is first revisited at the beginning of the film, it's down to, like, basically four notes.
- 45:47And you can still recognize it as the Spider man theme.
- 45:51And, you know, if you're not looking for.
- 45:53Not paying attention, register.
- 45:55But yeah, they're just.
- 45:56There are fewer notes in the Spider man theme.
- 45:58And because he's not really Spider man.
- 46:00And it stays that way, missing a part until the very end when there's a shot where he's kind of monologuing about, you know, that he's not going to do it anymore.
- 46:10He's talking.
- 46:11I think he's talking to Aunt May in his mind about how he's not going to try to go it alone anymore.
- 46:17And we see a shot of MJ and we hear the theme with some more of the notes at the back.
- 46:22And then they go and have the handshake moment with Ned in the corner store.
- 46:28And again we hear the theme with all of the notes restored.
- 46:30And I just thought that was a nice little musical flourish that.
- 46:34Oh, man.
- 46:35That's added.
- 46:36That's beautiful.
- 46:37That's beautiful.
- 46:38On so many levels.
- 46:39Because I remember, I remember having anxiety that he was doing the music for A Rogue One because I was like, how dare he?
- 46:50Oh yeah.
- 46:50And.
- 46:51And that's not John Williams.
- 46:53And.
- 46:53And he pulled it off, man.
- 46:55Like it was so good.
- 46:56And here I love to hear that that kind of heartfelt technicality is brought into it as well because it's just as part of the filmmaking as the.
- 47:12As the gaffer or whatnot.
- 47:15Yeah, but that's cool.
- 47:17All right.
- 47:17And with that we will.
- 47:21We will wrap things up.
- 47:23Reminder again that we will have an extra question for this episode that will be about adding which previous MCU film could be improved by the addition of a secret X Men character.
- 47:35Do we have anything to recommend to the good folks as a result of this episode?
- 47:43I've been saying it the past few times and the listeners are probably going to be bored, but the friendly Neighborhood Spider man is just a fun show and I milk joking that show as much as I can because
- 47:54it's fun.
- 47:55Awesome.
- 47:56And we.
- 47:56The Tombstone from that show gets a three second cameo.
- 48:00That's right.
- 48:01The same actor.
- 48:02That's right.
- 48:03And.
- 48:04And the actor that played Tombstone and Brand New Day played him in one of the Spider Verse films.
- 48:12I don't know which one.
- 48:12Yeah, I think it's the first Spider Verse film.
- 48:14The first one.
- 48:15Okay.
- 48:15And.
- 48:16And the friendly Neighborhood Spider man cartoon.
- 48:18That is so much fun.
- 48:21And I will say that if you're looking for some more Jean Grey material, X Men Red would be the like 12 issue series by Tom Taylor.
- 48:31And I apologize, the artist is not coming to mind right now.
- 48:34But yeah, a 12 issue series about a team led by Jean Grey.
- 48:39I think one of my favorite Jean Grey focus stories, you know, that isn't the Dark Phoenix.
- 48:44If you're looking for something with a little bit more lightness to it, that's a good one.
- 48:49So check those things out, please.
- 48:51Again, remember to rate review the show wherever that's possible.
- 48:54And thank you again to Jeanne Mattingly and everyone who supports us and makes it possible to do the show.
- 49:00You can become a member yourself.
- 49:03Find the link in the show notes, the show description, the video description.
- 49:05Somewhere you'll find a link to the site where you can go and sign up and get access to our bonus question, all of our other bonus material and lots of other goodies as well.
- 49:14And hopefully we'll come back with.
- 49:17We'll be back next time with something else to talk about other than Brand New Day.
- 49:21Although I'm sure that there's things still left unsaid.
- 49:25But, yeah, until that time, remember, if you're going to geek, do it systematically,.
- 49:34Sam.
