- 0:18Speaker 1: Return to Glory Podcast, Sona Sharberniki here to start off
- 0:23Speaker 1: the top of the episode. It's been a couple of weeks,
- 0:26Speaker 1: a few weeks actually, since we've last been on air.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Wife's got up with us here in twenty twenty five.
- 0:32Speaker 1: I'm including here for our last episode. A lot of
- 0:34Speaker 1: Husker basketball. I'm a lot of recruiting news as always,
- 0:39Speaker 1: and in college football playoff NFL playoff reaction coming your way,
- 0:45Speaker 1: Dakota Free tag Austin Rose with the duo episode on
- 0:49Speaker 1: their own. Then you'll hear back from me at the end.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Return to Glory Podcast, Austin Rose, Dakota for Ta Hunter's
- 1:00Speaker 2: Arminiki is probably adding a little bit to the beginning
- 1:03Speaker 2: of this podcast. He, from my understanding for the text mester, Jack,
- 1:07Speaker 2: correct me if I'm wrong, was super upset that he
- 1:09Speaker 2: lost a high school girls basketball game. Is that?
- 1:12Speaker 3: Yeah, that's that's that's what I picked up on. I
- 1:15Speaker 3: don't think.
- 1:16Speaker 2: I don't think he's just like not removed to pod.
- 1:18Speaker 2: I'm so sad that we lost, which you know, when
- 1:21Speaker 2: you're coaching, I get it. Yeah, it's he didn't give
- 1:25Speaker 2: any context outside off we lost a basketball game, and
- 1:27Speaker 2: I was like all right. Cool.
- 1:29Speaker 4: I tried to find the score, couldn't find it, So
- 1:31Speaker 4: I don't know what what happened there.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Oh I haven't even think, not too It must have
- 1:34Speaker 2: been rough. But yeah, so it is just you us
- 1:40Speaker 2: for now. Hunter will add some comment. I've commentary at
- 1:43Speaker 2: the beginning of the end of this, to my understanding.
- 1:46Speaker 2: But it's been a while, Dak, how's it going. You
- 1:48Speaker 2: lost your phone? We were talking about that beforehand. He
- 1:51Speaker 2: got a new number.
- 1:52Speaker 4: Yeah, that's that's one of the main reasons why we
- 1:54Speaker 4: went had a podcast in a while.
- 1:56Speaker 3: There isn't.
- 1:57Speaker 4: I mean, that's one of the reasons. One of the
- 1:59Speaker 4: other one is Nebraska basketball. We just don't want to
- 2:01Speaker 4: talk about them.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Yeah, we just.
- 2:06Speaker 5: Wait.
- 2:07Speaker 3: So our last pod was before the.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Iowa game, right, yes, I believe so.
- 2:12Speaker 6: Okay, so because we because we were supposed to meet,
- 2:16Speaker 6: we were gonna talk about the Purdue game, but then
- 2:18Speaker 6: we got destroyed, like like f it, we're not gonna
- 2:21Speaker 6: talk today.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I didn't have a phone, so I couldn't the
- 2:24Speaker 3: next week.
- 2:25Speaker 2: I think you lost your phone, yep.
- 2:27Speaker 4: So yeah, so Purdue was the last game before that.
- 2:32Speaker 4: You can you're gonna have to get the context on
- 2:34Speaker 4: that one. I all I thought from it because I
- 2:36Speaker 4: didn't even know was on TV, was that Purdue just
- 2:38Speaker 4: shot the lights out basically on in that game.
- 2:41Speaker 2: So okay, So yeah, so it's been a while, let's
- 2:44Speaker 2: go through it. So we lost to Iowan overtime. We
- 2:46Speaker 2: beat UCLA number fifteen, Ucla by ten at home or
- 2:49Speaker 2: eight eight at home, felt pretty good. We go to Iowa,
- 2:55Speaker 2: we go on a nine to oh run to close
- 2:57Speaker 2: the game basically to send it to over two time.
- 3:00Speaker 2: We lose in overtime by ten. Then we roll in
- 3:02Speaker 2: to Purdue and get absolutely thumped, I mean thirty six
- 3:08Speaker 2: point loss, and yeah, it's just pretty shot lights out.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Then we roll into Rutgers. We have a decent lead
- 3:18Speaker 2: early on and then it's pretty much competitive back and forth.
- 3:20Speaker 2: We lose to Rutgers by three at home, rare pinnacle loss.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Then we go to Maryland, we lose to Maryland by three.
- 3:28Speaker 2: We come back home, lose to usc by five, get
- 3:31Speaker 2: thumped by Wisconsin yesterday. So we've lost six in a row.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Fred Hoiberg seats warming up pretty much. If I had
- 3:45Speaker 2: to describe what's happening as we were struggling with the
- 3:51Speaker 2: with just big ten athleticism, and our biggest issue is
- 3:56Speaker 2: we can our defensive scheme is good enough to hold
- 3:59Speaker 2: up against the larger post players, but if the other
- 4:02Speaker 2: team is shooting well, we're terrible at the kicking pop
- 4:05Speaker 2: like the driving kicks, yep. And if they're hitting those shots,
- 4:08Speaker 2: we're just soled like that is that's basically the correct
- 4:12Speaker 2: But I think I saw somewhere that forty four in
- 4:14Speaker 2: our losses, our opponents are shooting forty four percent from three,
- 4:17Speaker 2: and our wins they're shooting twenty seven percent from three
- 4:20Speaker 2: or something like that. So we knew our offense was
- 4:24Speaker 2: gonna be a problem. It's just when your offense is
- 4:29Speaker 2: gonna be a problem, your defense can't have a liability
- 4:31Speaker 2: like three point shooting. And it's been real.
- 4:33Speaker 4: Rough, and it's what we said at the beginning of the year.
- 4:37Speaker 4: What the problem was gonna be was if you don't
- 4:39Speaker 4: have your two stars playing nice out Jawan and Bryce, yep,
- 4:44Speaker 4: they're gonna be a problem with And for a while
- 4:47Speaker 4: there you got other guys stepping up like a siege
- 4:48Speaker 4: in you can tell has just fallen off, has just
- 4:54Speaker 4: fallen off the map, Like it's like none of your
- 4:56Speaker 4: other players. And honestly, Bryce Williams is playing awful too,
- 4:59Speaker 4: that's the thing. Yes, Like he's he's the main one,
- 5:03Speaker 4: which teams are probably teams just locking him up.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Now, I think that's part of it. I think just defensively,
- 5:08Speaker 2: teams are locking in on Bryce Williams.
- 5:10Speaker 4: Yeah, and it's not like he's like an absolute superstar either,
- 5:14Speaker 4: Like I don't.
- 5:18Speaker 1: It.
- 5:18Speaker 4: Basically it's it's boom or bust with those two if
- 5:22Speaker 4: you don't have because Jaman has been playing good, it's
- 5:26Speaker 4: just been Brax Williamson's done anything. So everyone else has
- 5:28Speaker 4: done nothing.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Now, now your other Morgan, you do have, you.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Do have some real players step and that Morgan has
- 5:36Speaker 4: played well in this stretch. He's about the only only
- 5:40Speaker 4: one though the season is still shooting well.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Other than that, those other guys are.
- 5:45Speaker 2: A while bat like they're just everyone's a little bit
- 5:48Speaker 2: too streaky and we're not good enough team talent wise
- 5:51Speaker 2: to be streaky. Yeah, Like we need everyone to be
- 5:54Speaker 2: doing well, and it's just it has not worked out
- 5:57Speaker 2: and we're I I don't know if I agree with
- 6:01Speaker 2: the discourse on we have to fire Fred Hoiberg. He's
- 6:04Speaker 2: a poser. This is Scott Frost Energy, because I mean,
- 6:10Speaker 2: we're right there. You look at four of those games
- 6:13Speaker 2: we one we lost in overtime, the other two we
- 6:15Speaker 2: lost by five or fewer points. Like, it's not like
- 6:17Speaker 2: we're getting killed. I mean, we got killed by Purdue,
- 6:21Speaker 2: but Purdue is also a really good team.
- 6:25Speaker 3: And and honestly, I look at this way, what what
- 6:28Speaker 3: was the expectations.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Coming in the year, Like I think, and you're right,
- 6:33Speaker 2: I mean the expectations were. I think before the season
- 6:35Speaker 2: started most of us had us as a bubble team
- 6:38Speaker 2: at best. I don't know if anyone was like, this
- 6:40Speaker 2: team's gonna make the tourney.
- 6:43Speaker 4: The reason the reason why people are freaking out so
- 6:45Speaker 4: much right now is because of that hot start.
- 6:47Speaker 2: You had, right we started what twelve and two.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Twelve yeah, yeah, twelve and two.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:53Speaker 3: And one of our last field.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Saint Barry, is in the tournament game where we lost
- 6:56Speaker 2: by threes. Like it's just yeah, you.
- 7:02Speaker 4: So so the reason why I went to ask freaking
- 7:04Speaker 4: is because of how hot you started there, and you're like, well,
- 7:06Speaker 4: this team, this team is the tournament team.
- 7:08Speaker 3: And I started okay.
- 7:10Speaker 4: I I never really knew for sure or thought Nebraska
- 7:15Speaker 4: was that good this year. Until that UCLA game, I
- 7:18Speaker 4: was like, holy craft, they might actually be good.
- 7:20Speaker 2: I agree that was I think that's also part of
- 7:22Speaker 2: it is just timing. Is we beat UCLA, we beat Creighton,
- 7:26Speaker 2: and we beat uclup for that twelve win, and then
- 7:28Speaker 2: we roll into Iowa on the road we lose an overtime.
- 7:32Speaker 2: We were like okay, like we just had a big
- 7:35Speaker 2: victory at home, we losen overtime on the road. Like
- 7:38Speaker 2: we started out against Rutgers were looking good and then
- 7:41Speaker 2: it just the wheels fell off.
- 7:43Speaker 4: Yep, and I and I don't know what you're thinking about.
- 7:47Speaker 4: I think it's completely falling off now, Like I.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Think, oh, I think this season we're not making the tournament. No,
- 7:53Speaker 2: I mean it would require just an absolute tearor of
- 7:56Speaker 2: we beat you know, eighteen milling awis sixteen organ we
- 8:01Speaker 2: basically have I don't want to say we have to
- 8:02Speaker 2: win out, but we see how many games we have
- 8:05Speaker 2: left one, two, three, four, five, six.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Well that's that's the fun part is you got three
- 8:10Speaker 3: straight ranked right here, so.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Right, I think we have twelve more games, eight, nine, ten, eleven.
- 8:21Speaker 2: I mean we have to go eight and three probably
- 8:25Speaker 2: to have a home.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Yeah, get shit.
- 8:27Speaker 2: They're just a team.
- 8:30Speaker 3: I mean.
- 8:30Speaker 4: The main there's one main problem with Toy Work is,
- 8:34Speaker 4: and it's been it's been ever since you got here,
- 8:36Speaker 4: is you cannot win on the road at all, especially
- 8:40Speaker 4: come Big ten play. It's like on the road, it's
- 8:42Speaker 4: just completely different. And it's usually just an ass kicking
- 8:44Speaker 4: on the road too, Like none of these games have
- 8:48Speaker 4: been it's like yesterday, yesterday Wisconsin. What they start down
- 8:52Speaker 4: nineteen to two? Yeah, yeah, you can't. You can't come
- 8:57Speaker 4: out expecting to win a game when you're down with
- 8:59Speaker 4: that much. Again, it's a good team like them.
- 9:03Speaker 2: And we lost by twenty eight, So wasn't.
- 9:07Speaker 5: It.
- 9:08Speaker 4: They didn't battle back though, tied it up. I was like, okay,
- 9:12Speaker 4: you know, maybe maybe I got something. Took any note
- 9:14Speaker 4: that that turn quick.
- 9:16Speaker 2: They just don't have that. They don't have the guy that.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Like I said, they have spurts, but they're just so inconsistent.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Their cold streaks are so cold. Yeah, you can go
- 9:26Speaker 2: seven minutes a game without scoring and it's like, oh,
- 9:29Speaker 2: this is normal.
- 9:31Speaker 4: That's That's another thing about Work is like last year,
- 9:33Speaker 4: even last year, they had these scoring droughts that just
- 9:37Speaker 4: kill you every game. It's like yeah, like I said,
- 9:38Speaker 4: six seven minutes, you go out of basket easy.
- 9:41Speaker 3: It's like, I don't know, and he's not.
- 9:50Speaker 4: His his philosophy's been basically got the team every year
- 9:55Speaker 4: and bringing these transfers, which last year worked. But you
- 9:59Speaker 4: can't you can't keep losing all these players, like these
- 10:03Speaker 4: good players like C. J.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Wilcher. I guess is when he lost last year.
- 10:06Speaker 4: But but then people forget he also lost rank mass
- 10:08Speaker 4: when of your best right, Yeah.
- 10:11Speaker 2: I mean you feel a little better because our offense,
- 10:14Speaker 2: we we were looking for that true point guard and
- 10:16Speaker 2: I don't know if we we still don't have a
- 10:20Speaker 2: point guard.
- 10:23Speaker 3: You're telling me, isn't it us?
- 10:25Speaker 2: Isn't it? I mean Bryce Williams leads the team with
- 10:27Speaker 2: assists with two and a half. Oh no, sorry, Robley
- 10:30Speaker 2: Worster leads the team with three assists, just under three assists.
- 10:36Speaker 4: And I don't know what you think about it. I'm
- 10:38Speaker 4: not big on Wooster beginning of years. Like on this
- 10:40Speaker 4: guy's okay, I think he's not.
- 10:43Speaker 2: I don't think he's that good from the field of
- 10:47Speaker 2: twenty four percent from three like it's like, cool, we
- 10:51Speaker 2: have you out there. You can't shoot a freaking point.
- 10:53Speaker 2: You can only get his three assists in twenty minutes
- 10:54Speaker 2: a game, twenty five minutes a game, Like, what do
- 10:56Speaker 2: you mean if you're not passing the ball, you're not
- 10:58Speaker 2: great on defense and you are great at shooting.
- 11:03Speaker 3: And that's so. So I think Koriberg's finally figuring that out.
- 11:07Speaker 4: He's he's trying to do anything by switch the lineups up,
- 11:10Speaker 4: find anything for the point. I think your point guard
- 11:12Speaker 4: position is the main problem right now. You have nobody
- 11:14Speaker 4: that can lead this team. And Bryce is not Bryce
- 11:18Speaker 4: is not true point guard either. He's he's more out there.
- 11:22Speaker 2: He's a shooting guard.
- 11:23Speaker 4: Yeah, he's a shooting guard. Well, when you don't have
- 11:27Speaker 4: a point guard that can score, that really puts the
- 11:30Speaker 4: burden on him then.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Right, so he has to score and pick up the
- 11:35Speaker 2: defensive assignment and assist.
- 11:39Speaker 4: With with the whole team trying to lock it like
- 11:41Speaker 4: basically go five on one.
- 11:43Speaker 3: At some points, it's like, I don't know, it's it's
- 11:48Speaker 3: which which us was the one?
- 11:51Speaker 4: I thought when they started him, I thought he was
- 11:55Speaker 4: gonna be okay at point guard. And boy, he has
- 11:58Speaker 4: done nothing.
- 11:58Speaker 2: No, I mean he had against Iowa, he had a
- 12:01Speaker 2: real moment. But yeah, I mean he's shooting twenty percent
- 12:04Speaker 2: from three thirty five percent from the field. He's only
- 12:08Speaker 2: playing fourteen minutes a game, less than one assist a game,
- 12:11Speaker 2: less than I mean, he's only a few point six
- 12:12Speaker 2: assist a game.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Like he's almos. He's almost unplayable.
- 12:16Speaker 2: He's almost unplayable because he can't even hit free throws.
- 12:20Speaker 2: It's like you're a freaking point guard. That's the one
- 12:22Speaker 2: thing point guards needed. It's like you have to be
- 12:23Speaker 2: able to pass the ball and hit your free throws.
- 12:28Speaker 3: Yeah, it's.
- 12:30Speaker 2: So outlook on the rest of the season. You look
- 12:33Speaker 2: at the schedule. We've lost six in a row. I
- 12:37Speaker 2: suspect will probably lose another two. So it's probably gonna
- 12:42Speaker 2: be eight in a row, and the Knife's gonna be
- 12:45Speaker 2: in the team. And I think the color cooked.
- 12:47Speaker 3: Yeah, Illinois Illinois to that's tomorrow, right, Yep, it's at
- 12:51Speaker 3: Illinois Illinois. I own tomorrow. That's that's the one for sure.
- 12:57Speaker 3: Season's over there is that?
- 12:58Speaker 4: Like, that's your own only hope when that game at
- 13:02Speaker 4: home somehow and maybe maybe turn something around.
- 13:06Speaker 3: But got.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Do you?
- 13:11Speaker 3: Are you out of Whitburg?
- 13:13Speaker 2: No, I'm not. I think Nebraska has a basketball program
- 13:18Speaker 2: and has so much it has to do. And last
- 13:24Speaker 2: year was real progress and the start to this year
- 13:27Speaker 2: was real progress. And like I said, we've lost four
- 13:30Speaker 2: of the six games there were all were right there. Yeah,
- 13:35Speaker 2: you know, so I don't I don't think I'm out
- 13:39Speaker 2: on them yet. If we end the year sub five hundred,
- 13:44Speaker 2: probably a different tune. But I'll give them the rest
- 13:47Speaker 2: of the year to figure it out.
- 13:50Speaker 3: Yeah. That's the thing is who who you can bring
- 13:52Speaker 3: that's better, Like.
- 13:55Speaker 2: I mean, there's someone out there, there is there are
- 13:57Speaker 2: better coaches out there. It was just you'd have to
- 13:59Speaker 2: take a chance on someone and you're starting for one.
- 14:03Speaker 4: Yeah, it's different than the football team, like you'll get
- 14:06Speaker 4: this got time, but it's it's getting the point where
- 14:08Speaker 4: it's like either you got to figure it out.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Now or of course it's not getting figured out.
- 14:14Speaker 4: No, And that's and you're losing everybody after this season. Two,
- 14:18Speaker 4: You're you're losing Joan and Bryce.
- 14:20Speaker 2: And uh Rank will be back.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Maybe he could jump ship.
- 14:29Speaker 2: But let's see who our seniors are. Rawley is a senior, Bryce,
- 14:35Speaker 2: Aaron Andrew Morgan, braxt and me Rank and Juan So
- 14:44Speaker 2: of players who are actually I mean, beer k and
- 14:51Speaker 2: Connor season are really the only two Sam Oiberg. We
- 14:56Speaker 2: have those three that be contributors right now.
- 15:02Speaker 3: And boy, that's that's no super team right there.
- 15:04Speaker 2: I'll tell you no, that is rough.
- 15:09Speaker 4: But then so then you look at players that leave you,
- 15:12Speaker 4: like C. J. Wilchri would have been like your number
- 15:15Speaker 4: three this year for sure. You look at the A
- 15:17Speaker 4: and M. He's playing like five minutes a game. I
- 15:20Speaker 4: was looking at his stats the other day. He's not
- 15:21Speaker 4: playing at all. It's like, how good are these players
- 15:24Speaker 4: you actually have?
- 15:26Speaker 2: Right when they go to other teams and they don't
- 15:28Speaker 2: even crack like the second string lineup.
- 15:31Speaker 4: Yeah, and C. J. Walter might have been your best
- 15:34Speaker 4: player on the team this year for for sure.
- 15:37Speaker 5: There So, I don't know, it's it's tough, all right,
- 15:44Speaker 5: enough sad talk, let's talk.
- 15:47Speaker 2: We have not talked since they I don't know if
- 15:49Speaker 2: we talked after the semifinals go to college football playoffs,
- 15:55Speaker 2: which we're both I'm trying to remember how they shook
- 15:58Speaker 2: out o Hi of State killed.
- 16:03Speaker 3: High State beat Texas. Thank god, that's last second, last second.
- 16:07Speaker 2: That's right, that's right. And then Notre Dame got killed
- 16:09Speaker 2: by Dame, Penn State, Penn State.
- 16:16Speaker 3: There we go, which I don't.
- 16:27Speaker 4: I don't know how the house they did. After the
- 16:28Speaker 4: Michigan game, I was completely out of them. But man,
- 16:31Speaker 4: this whole playoffs easily the best team in the nation, like.
- 16:36Speaker 3: Like they proved it. I mean, you gott think the world.
- 16:39Speaker 3: They went down.
- 16:39Speaker 4: Tennessee, so they beat Tennessee, Bearegon killed Orgon. They killed
- 16:46Speaker 4: both of those teams, and I thought I picked them
- 16:48Speaker 4: both both games. I picked them to lose those games.
- 16:53Speaker 4: And then so then they killed Oregon Texas movement X.
- 16:59Speaker 4: I mean they it did come down towards the end
- 17:02Speaker 4: against Texas, but I thought they controlled that.
- 17:03Speaker 3: It felt like they control that whole game.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Yep.
- 17:08Speaker 4: And and then you then you go tale game. Ohio
- 17:10Speaker 4: State freaking kills another Dame basically another game. Another game
- 17:16Speaker 4: came down toward last second whatever, but they control that
- 17:20Speaker 4: whole game there too, So I don't. I don't think
- 17:21Speaker 4: there was any doubt that Hio State was the best
- 17:23Speaker 4: team in the nation.
- 17:24Speaker 2: No, I mean the only doubt you have, I yeah,
- 17:30Speaker 2: I mean the only doubt you really have is like, well,
- 17:32Speaker 2: Oregon beat them, but then they killed Oregon again. Yeah,
- 17:35Speaker 2: you know, in a third matchup, does Oregon win again?
- 17:38Speaker 2: Do they do they win? I feel alright with it.
- 17:43Speaker 2: My big complaint is, honestly, I had moved on from
- 17:48Speaker 2: college football by the time the playoffs. By the championship game,
- 17:50Speaker 2: I honestly forgot it was happening. There was like, I'm
- 17:53Speaker 2: NFL playoffs are on. I don't care, Like.
- 17:59Speaker 3: See that's the that's that's.
- 18:03Speaker 4: That's one thing about these playoffs is they pushed that
- 18:05Speaker 4: title game way too.
- 18:06Speaker 3: Far back and everybody.
- 18:13Speaker 4: It felt like everybody forgot, like there was no hype
- 18:16Speaker 4: going in this game. I didn't hear anything about it. No, honestly,
- 18:18Speaker 4: I'm with you, and that I kind of forgot. I
- 18:20Speaker 4: was on until I turn on TVs.
- 18:23Speaker 2: ESPN was trying their best by having like Ryan Day
- 18:27Speaker 2: and Marcus Freeman on all the time, but I was like,
- 18:31Speaker 2: I don't care, man, I'm not that could be a product.
- 18:35Speaker 2: I I just you know, it's not Nebraska football, and
- 18:37Speaker 2: I just didn't care that much. But the games hadn't
- 18:40Speaker 2: been that compelling up until that point, and I really
- 18:43Speaker 2: didn't think it was gonna be that compelling because do you,
- 18:46Speaker 2: I mean, do you really think Notre Dame was the
- 18:48Speaker 2: second best team in the country.
- 18:50Speaker 3: No, but the playoffs shook out that, like I know,
- 18:53Speaker 3: and that's how and I get it.
- 18:54Speaker 2: That's how it works.
- 18:59Speaker 3: You played Georgia the back quarterback.
- 19:00Speaker 2: It's like, right, I.
- 19:06Speaker 4: So going into these these playoffs, I was pumped about this,
- 19:10Speaker 4: this twelve team playoff the first week, and then it's
- 19:14Speaker 4: slowly died down as it got farther into I feel
- 19:16Speaker 4: like like my height four like.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Right, because you watch the same team's play which it's
- 19:21Speaker 2: how regular playoffs work. But it's like I don't care
- 19:25Speaker 2: to watch Ohio State four times in a row.
- 19:27Speaker 3: I really know, like the.
- 19:30Speaker 2: NFL is probably it's a little bit different because it's
- 19:33Speaker 2: not and that maybe I'm wrong, but I don't really
- 19:38Speaker 2: have a team that root for in the NFL particularly,
- 19:41Speaker 2: I have teams are rooted against, but it's like, oh,
- 19:43Speaker 2: you like, I'll watch and most of the games are
- 19:45Speaker 2: usually good, outside of the Washington Commanders Eagles game, which
- 19:48Speaker 2: we can be later. But it's like I don't want
- 19:53Speaker 2: to watch Ohio State's roster, who they have probably the
- 19:56Speaker 2: most expensive roster in college football. I don't want to
- 19:59Speaker 2: watch from four times in a row. But that's just me.
- 20:03Speaker 3: Yeah, and.
- 20:06Speaker 4: It's uh, I feel like that the championship game too,
- 20:09Speaker 4: Like a lot of people don't like a housing in
- 20:11Speaker 4: their dame.
- 20:12Speaker 2: That's that's true. That's true. They aren't likable fan bases.
- 20:15Speaker 3: No, no one's no one's dying to go watching their
- 20:18Speaker 3: Dame football I.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Field outside of people from Notre Dame.
- 20:22Speaker 3: And they're just they're just not there. Weren't an exciting
- 20:24Speaker 3: team like.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Well because they don't. They didn't play like really any
- 20:29Speaker 2: big games.
- 20:30Speaker 3: No, no, they so so that's that's the only thing.
- 20:33Speaker 4: The playoffs is no Dame, which I don't know if
- 20:35Speaker 4: it'll start changing people's scheduling, is no Dame went this
- 20:39Speaker 4: whole season, didn't really play anybody.
- 20:42Speaker 2: In the playoffs outside but they they won in the playoffs.
- 20:45Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe who who was their second game? I cannot
- 20:53Speaker 3: think who was?
- 20:58Speaker 2: Maybe Indiana Georgia.
- 21:00Speaker 3: Georgia, Yep, that's okay, Georgia with back quarterback, which we
- 21:05Speaker 3: all kind.
- 21:06Speaker 2: Of thought Indiana was maybe a bit above punching above
- 21:10Speaker 2: their weight class this year. But you look at the
- 21:15Speaker 2: regular season, it's like they beat number twenty two Army
- 21:20Speaker 2: lost in Northern Illinois, Boston Northern Illinois.
- 21:27Speaker 5: Now.
- 21:27Speaker 4: Now another way you can look at it is how
- 21:29Speaker 4: the hell did Nebraska hang in with the house. They
- 21:31Speaker 4: should have beat them.
- 21:33Speaker 2: That's National Channel.
- 21:35Speaker 3: That's when I'm looking back on it, You're like, how
- 21:37Speaker 3: what happened? Again?
- 21:39Speaker 2: Ohio State still lost to Michigan, but yeah, two weeks before.
- 21:44Speaker 4: Yeah, you see all these like they have they freaking
- 21:47Speaker 4: Jeremiah smith and Will Howard. Yeah, all out of States
- 21:51Speaker 4: offense was at the end there was just the very
- 21:54Speaker 4: last player this season just chuck up to Jeremy Smithy
- 21:56Speaker 4: somewhere down there, like and don't catch it. It's like
- 21:59Speaker 4: it's like we're was that against Thebraskan against Michigan?
- 22:03Speaker 2: I don't. Yeah, they probably just tried to have an
- 22:05Speaker 2: offense and they're like, we don't need an offense. We
- 22:07Speaker 2: have the best player on the field.
- 22:09Speaker 3: Here you go. No, and and Nebraska should have beat them.
- 22:13Speaker 2: It's like, I know, yeah, well Nebraska is a knack
- 22:18Speaker 2: for f any ways not to beat people.
- 22:20Speaker 3: Yeah they yeah, they and they tried. They tried their
- 22:22Speaker 3: hardest that game. They more, did they? They?
- 22:26Speaker 2: What is your opinion? I guess so you know, one
- 22:30Speaker 2: us to talk about discoursing around playoff format. You know,
- 22:34Speaker 2: the ACC came out and said maybe they won't their
- 22:36Speaker 2: best team, the regular season champion won't play in their
- 22:38Speaker 2: championship game. It will be between their number two and
- 22:41Speaker 2: number three seed. Really, I did not see that that
- 22:45Speaker 2: the commissioners came out and said that they might they're
- 22:47Speaker 2: considering doing that because then they're the regular season champion,
- 22:52Speaker 2: doesn't risk losing, and then their two and three seed
- 22:54Speaker 2: has a chance to buff their resume. If someone was
- 23:00Speaker 2: making the argument that, yeah, what happens when a team
- 23:05Speaker 2: opts out of their championship game. Yeah because Ohio State
- 23:09Speaker 2: didn't play a championship game. Yeah game didn't play a
- 23:12Speaker 2: championship game.
- 23:16Speaker 3: And it's.
- 23:19Speaker 4: I think it's gonna get to the point where, like
- 23:22Speaker 4: I said, teams are gonna just getting not scheduling very hard,
- 23:25Speaker 4: just sneaking the playoffs, and then from there you don't
- 23:27Speaker 4: know what happened like Dame.
- 23:31Speaker 3: Now, I do think.
- 23:34Speaker 4: I mean, it's the first year ever they're gonna change
- 23:35Speaker 4: it up, like in my aready happen next year?
- 23:37Speaker 3: I do think. I do think that you need to
- 23:42Speaker 3: change up the way it's seeding.
- 23:43Speaker 4: You can't have Boise State as a four seed and
- 23:47Speaker 4: then the three seed Arizona State, which they hung with Texas.
- 23:50Speaker 3: I will give them that, but I feel like you
- 23:53Speaker 3: need to rank it.
- 23:54Speaker 4: Actually going into like the top twelve teams just completely
- 23:57Speaker 4: scraped the scrap the championship format all that just right
- 24:01Speaker 4: right when you get on on twelve you rank them
- 24:04Speaker 4: from there?
- 24:04Speaker 2: Well, I mean I think the reason that they have
- 24:06Speaker 2: that is to incentivize the championship weekend. Yeah, that's why.
- 24:09Speaker 2: It's like you have to care about your championship game.
- 24:11Speaker 2: But now it's like, well, if you give rid.
- 24:12Speaker 4: Of by do I care which which, Like you said,
- 24:16Speaker 4: I think teams will will will opt out?
- 24:18Speaker 2: I do too.
- 24:20Speaker 3: I like that there's no point of and say your
- 24:24Speaker 3: organ playing that game this year?
- 24:25Speaker 2: How long before they just completely stop doing conference championship games.
- 24:31Speaker 4: It's you're you're gonna have a team opt out here
- 24:34Speaker 4: pretty soon, like with the next two years, and then
- 24:37Speaker 4: that's that's can change everything.
- 24:38Speaker 3: It's like it's like why why play this game?
- 24:41Speaker 2: So say you're say you're Ohio State, say your organ,
- 24:45Speaker 2: you know, like why would I play this game? Or
- 24:48Speaker 2: Penn State even.
- 24:49Speaker 3: Like injuries, yeah, injuries and all that.
- 24:52Speaker 2: It's like I'm gonna be in the top twelve. Why
- 24:58Speaker 2: play this game? So like for Ohio State or Oregon
- 25:02Speaker 2: where it's like, well we had to freaking play each
- 25:04Speaker 2: other anyways, it didn't matter.
- 25:07Speaker 4: So back to Notre Dame is they didn't play a
- 25:08Speaker 4: Commers title game, so they were in no matter what.
- 25:12Speaker 4: But then you have a game with Clempton SMU where
- 25:19Speaker 4: basically winner winner goes basically as how it was, but
- 25:24Speaker 4: end up being both teams got in. But I don't know,
- 25:28Speaker 4: I think.
- 25:30Speaker 2: State, you know, if Arizona State didn't win Big twelve,
- 25:33Speaker 2: I don't know, if they make the championship.
- 25:36Speaker 4: Yahay and say there was no title game, then they
- 25:38Speaker 4: would have been no matter what.
- 25:39Speaker 2: It's like great. I don't know. I think I'm fine
- 25:44Speaker 2: with it. Current format. It's never gonna be perfect. We're
- 25:48Speaker 2: always gonna have to watch a lot of extra football,
- 25:50Speaker 2: which I should be complaining about. But like I said,
- 25:52Speaker 2: four weeks of watching Ohio State and Notre Dame was
- 25:54Speaker 2: a lot.
- 25:55Speaker 4: See that's that's going in the playoffs like this just
- 25:58Speaker 4: canna be awesome, a lot a lot more football everything,
- 26:00Speaker 4: And towards the.
- 26:01Speaker 3: End, I was like, Okay, this is too much.
- 26:03Speaker 2: It's that part of this is also because the NFL
- 26:05Speaker 2: was like it's like in their playoffs. They're in their playoffs.
- 26:09Speaker 2: It's like, I don't care about this anymore. This is
- 26:13Speaker 2: more exciting now.
- 26:17Speaker 3: But and it's I think the transfer portal too, is
- 26:24Speaker 3: kind of killing.
- 26:25Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I'm going to see any of those Like.
- 26:30Speaker 3: Liple Howard's done. He's like he has one moment there.
- 26:34Speaker 3: It's like.
- 26:37Speaker 4: Now it's national team, but I don't know. Yeah, none,
- 26:40Speaker 4: none of those players in the house. Like jami As Smith,
- 26:42Speaker 4: he's out. Everybody's gone.
- 26:43Speaker 3: Like uh, I feel like college has to fix it
- 26:48Speaker 3: to where it's harder to know.
- 26:51Speaker 4: Now who's on a team that's playing going into it
- 26:55Speaker 4: unless you're like a diro exual Wall fan, like you
- 26:57Speaker 4: have no idea whos.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Which I do. Think that's why I like watching NFL better,
- 27:01Speaker 2: is like ye, these players, like I know who's playing,
- 27:06Speaker 2: and I know who's catching the ball. I'm not panicking.
- 27:09Speaker 4: Yeah, it's you know, you know what players and they're
- 27:14Speaker 4: gonna be back next year too. In the NFL, like yeah,
- 27:18Speaker 4: you're not worried about your.
- 27:19Speaker 3: Players leaving, Like.
- 27:23Speaker 4: Honestly, back to back to rest for a second, it's
- 27:27Speaker 4: like it was like almost it's almost surprising when a
- 27:30Speaker 4: person like Royali stays, yeah, you you just expect everybody
- 27:35Speaker 4: that had a good year is just gonna dip all
- 27:37Speaker 4: the money.
- 27:39Speaker 2: I'm saying, I'm surprised, like Ja Cory Barney didn't go.
- 27:42Speaker 3: Yeah, it's college is a lot to fix, and I
- 27:51Speaker 3: think Portal's number one.
- 27:52Speaker 4: I think the problem is they're gonna keep expanding the
- 27:55Speaker 4: playoffs because it's how much money it brings in until
- 28:00Speaker 4: which I guess I do like more football. I will
- 28:03Speaker 4: say it's the first round sucked. It was absolutely terrible,
- 28:09Speaker 4: which has to do with the fact that should teams
- 28:13Speaker 4: like if sm you've been in Indiana, like, I don't know,
- 28:20Speaker 4: it's what do.
- 28:21Speaker 2: You do though, when a team like Indiana they lost
- 28:23Speaker 2: two games is Ohio State and noted they only lose
- 28:30Speaker 2: one game all year they off to Ohio State or Ohio.
- 28:32Speaker 4: State, Yeah, didn't have played a conference cut game. See,
- 28:38Speaker 4: that's that's what I'm too. Then easy scheduled. They just
- 28:41Speaker 4: rolled that all the way to the end.
- 28:43Speaker 3: Make the playoffs.
- 28:44Speaker 4: That's that's that's what I think teams are eventually going
- 28:46Speaker 4: to do, which you can't do that with your conference.
- 28:48Speaker 2: I get it, but to an extent you Yeah, I mean,
- 28:52Speaker 2: now the conferences are getting bigger.
- 28:55Speaker 3: It makes you almost to not want to be in
- 28:56Speaker 3: a conference. Basically, go go nor Dane Brown. Just schedule
- 29:00Speaker 3: your own teams skates and make the playoffs.
- 29:05Speaker 2: I guess Indiana did beat Michigan. It did beat Michigan.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Outside of that, their next best win might have been
- 29:15Speaker 2: Nebraska Nebraska.
- 29:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know. It's it'll be interesting to see
- 29:24Speaker 3: if they keep it at YEP twelve. Going from this
- 29:27Speaker 3: point on.
- 29:30Speaker 2: All right, let's talk football briefly before we hang up.
- 29:34Speaker 2: We got five more minutes. Well, I don't know about you,
- 29:40Speaker 2: but I'm not super excited to watch Eagles Chiefs.
- 29:43Speaker 3: I'm not either, not one bit. I cannot stand Eagles fans.
- 29:51Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 29:52Speaker 3: I don't know you're you're not an Eagles fan.
- 29:54Speaker 2: I can't stand either man.
- 29:55Speaker 4: Okay, I don't the Chiefs are Okay, I guess I
- 29:59Speaker 4: don't really have it Eagles fans, though, I just can't.
- 30:04Speaker 2: They were ready to fire Cerea Audio last year after
- 30:07Speaker 2: thirteen and four or something.
- 30:11Speaker 4: It just feels like it's kind of college to like,
- 30:14Speaker 4: what could that's now? Don't be anything pumped up. We
- 30:17Speaker 4: saw this movie before two years ago.
- 30:19Speaker 2: The Eagles are gonna lead and Patrick Mahomes is gonna
- 30:23Speaker 2: play a bad game up until the last drive and
- 30:25Speaker 2: then there's gonna win.
- 30:26Speaker 3: Yep. That's I mean, that's the way it's been.
- 30:30Speaker 4: I was rooting for Bills and then obviously Commanders because
- 30:33Speaker 4: I I just wanted some new bollol on the Super Bowl.
- 30:37Speaker 3: That's all I really wanted.
- 30:38Speaker 2: Josh Allen.
- 30:41Speaker 4: And yeah, we can, we can get into that. I guess,
- 30:48Speaker 4: do you is he ever gonna be able to beat
- 30:51Speaker 4: the Chiefs?
- 30:53Speaker 2: And definitely the Chiefs will have a down year?
- 30:56Speaker 3: You think I do.
- 30:58Speaker 2: I think They've gotten relatively lucky on the defensive side
- 31:05Speaker 2: with who they've been able to draft, and at some
- 31:08Speaker 2: point they're gonna lose talent and they're not gonna They're
- 31:12Speaker 2: just not. They're gonna lose enough talent in the organization
- 31:15Speaker 2: that it's gonna be harder to fill back in. And
- 31:17Speaker 2: Andy Reid's old, I mean, he's not gonna be there
- 31:20Speaker 2: ten more years.
- 31:22Speaker 4: Well, that's that's one thing people don't think about Chiefs
- 31:25Speaker 4: is the defense. That's that's what carries that a year.
- 31:28Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, Mahmes has not been like the stellar
- 31:32Speaker 4: quarterback this year.
- 31:33Speaker 3: No.
- 31:33Speaker 2: I mean if you look at his season stats, like
- 31:36Speaker 2: only pull it up like it's.
- 31:37Speaker 4: Not great, it's middle of the road top. I mean,
- 31:40Speaker 4: he's been top ten quarterback. He's obviously somebody you want.
- 31:43Speaker 4: You would take him on your team in a second.
- 31:45Speaker 2: But it's just like, yes, such downs, eleven interceptions and
- 31:50Speaker 2: he had under four thousand yards. Yeah completion.
- 31:54Speaker 3: It's like yesterday, you're your defense. He was that win
- 31:56Speaker 3: for you. Send the blitz, yep, get Josh.
- 31:59Speaker 4: But the thing with Mahomes is he always will make
- 32:01Speaker 4: to play at the end to win you the game,
- 32:03Speaker 4: like that third nine.
- 32:04Speaker 3: Yep, you know it's gonna happen.
- 32:07Speaker 2: We also didn't yeah, I mean there was the the
- 32:15Speaker 2: Texans game. We didn't talk about the Texans game. That
- 32:18Speaker 2: one was rough, go ahead, whatever. It's fine, it's what
- 32:24Speaker 2: the NFL wants. The NFL can have it. Just get
- 32:26Speaker 2: the Bengals back in the playoffs. And the AFC is
- 32:29Speaker 2: just absolutely freaking loaded with Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson,
- 32:33Speaker 2: and Patrick Mahomes, with the occasional you know CJ. Stroud
- 32:40Speaker 2: or Justin Herbert.
- 32:45Speaker 3: Now there's it's it's a big time par right now.
- 32:48Speaker 3: The refs, the rest of the Chiefs, what do you.
- 32:52Speaker 2: I mean the fourth down spot for the Bills yesterday terrible.
- 32:56Speaker 3: That's terrible. That was awful.
- 32:59Speaker 4: I'm not I'm not a hundred pent Sure he got that,
- 33:05Speaker 4: but but for that Reft to come in and be like, yeah,
- 33:07Speaker 4: there's no there's no doubt, like on the spot guy there,
- 33:10Speaker 4: he's he marked him like a half got short of
- 33:13Speaker 4: even where he was like, I don't know.
- 33:17Speaker 3: Come in and be like, yeah, no, that guy's short.
- 33:18Speaker 3: I don't. I don't think.
- 33:22Speaker 4: I don't think it's the refs are as bad as
- 33:24Speaker 4: what people are like saying for the Chiefs like they're not.
- 33:28Speaker 4: It's it's glorified right now because everybody's watching that, every
- 33:31Speaker 4: single car.
- 33:32Speaker 2: I agree with that, but I also enjoy it because
- 33:34Speaker 2: I don't like the Chiefs.
- 33:38Speaker 3: I mean, I hate him too. I'm Vikings fan. God, God,
- 33:41Speaker 3: wish I was just one.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Pull anything else for me to say, there's no here, so.
- 33:52Speaker 4: Not they can think of not knocked out my head
- 33:55Speaker 4: right now. I guess tomorrow Hoscars need to win.
- 34:00Speaker 2: They do. I agree badly. Oh, go for it.
- 34:06Speaker 3: Basically seasoner go home tomorrow.
- 34:08Speaker 2: That's true, I say, quick, lady Lady basketball, shout out
- 34:12Speaker 2: the lady Huskers doing pretty well. The boy lost four games,
- 34:17Speaker 2: five games, and it was to number four, number one,
- 34:20Speaker 2: number twelve, and number seventeen, and we lost by six
- 34:23Speaker 2: yesterday number twelve, half pay. So feeling pretty good. All right,
- 34:29Speaker 2: A couple more weeks we'll be back. But until then,
- 34:33Speaker 2: GBR go big red Wow. I'm just here to make
- 34:37Speaker 2: you do it.
- 34:48Speaker 1: Return to Glory Podcast, Hunter Zarbniki here back. Thanks Da
- 34:52Speaker 1: Coda Austin for your duo episode. A little bit different
- 34:56Speaker 1: here as we've been a few weeks off from updating
- 35:00Speaker 1: you on all the recent Husker news, a lot of
- 35:03Speaker 1: it not necessarily positive when it comes to husk Er basketball,
- 35:08Speaker 1: so I.
- 35:10Speaker 2: Have not listened.
- 35:10Speaker 1: I did not tune in to Dax and Austin's analysis
- 35:15Speaker 1: and breakdown of the three topics that I gave him.
- 35:18Speaker 1: But I'm gonna give my own here and we'll see
- 35:20Speaker 1: and compare how much we matched up. So first topic
- 35:27Speaker 1: is Nebraska basketball that I'll go with and start off
- 35:30Speaker 1: on a little bit of a goal note. We've lost
- 35:34Speaker 1: five or six in a row now and the road
- 35:38Speaker 1: woes continue for Fred Hoiberg and this basketball team. We
- 35:43Speaker 1: drop a home game past two rote home games to
- 35:46Speaker 1: Rutgers and USC and things aren't looking good right now.
- 35:51Speaker 1: Forget the tournament. Let's just see if we can make
- 35:54Speaker 1: the Big Ten Conference tournament. At this point as we
- 35:57Speaker 1: sit second to last in the Big Ten standings, Here's
- 36:02Speaker 1: to me what it comes down to with this team.
- 36:07Speaker 1: How much fight, how much passion, how much care do
- 36:11Speaker 1: they have to get back in the conversation at least
- 36:16Speaker 1: to the middle of the Big Ten. This team did
- 36:20Speaker 1: that last year in really good fashion to end the year,
- 36:26Speaker 1: and it got the an NCAA Tournament birth this year,
- 36:30Speaker 1: when adversity strikes, we have seen this team shut down
- 36:35Speaker 1: a lot, and especially on the road when.
- 36:40Speaker 2: Things aren't going our way.
- 36:41Speaker 1: Early Purdue and then most recently we saw Michigan State
- 36:47Speaker 1: earlier and then on the road at Maryland. We just
- 36:52Speaker 1: don't seem to have much fight in this left and
- 36:56Speaker 1: that's a problem. It doesn't make for fun basketball to watch.
- 37:01Speaker 1: It is not something that you want to tune into.
- 37:05Speaker 1: And that's after the start that we had and we're
- 37:10Speaker 1: pretty much I'm not going to say a lock, but
- 37:11Speaker 1: a lot of people had us in their tournament, fifty
- 37:14Speaker 1: nine of sixty of the brackets out there. If you
- 37:16Speaker 1: would have talked to us on the first of the year,
- 37:19Speaker 1: we were in We're not now. And here's why this
- 37:25Speaker 1: is troublesome for this team. Our defense is based on hustle, effort, grit.
- 37:39Speaker 1: It's very schematic. It's not as much scouting base. Now,
- 37:47Speaker 1: there's obviously scouting components in there, but you got to
- 37:50Speaker 1: play hard with all these rotations and no middle type
- 37:55Speaker 1: of concept. There's not a whole lot of teams do it.
- 37:57Speaker 1: And when it works UCLA game, for example, it looks
- 38:01Speaker 1: pretty damn good, and there's times that it is very
- 38:05Speaker 1: fun to watch. But when you are playing hard, when
- 38:10Speaker 1: there's a little sense of doubt and you're not playing
- 38:12Speaker 1: together as a group as a team, it does not work.
- 38:17Speaker 1: We give up a ton of threes. That's a known fact.
- 38:20Speaker 1: We give up the most threes as a percentage of
- 38:22Speaker 1: the total opposing team's points in the country. It is
- 38:26Speaker 1: not it's not a hidden fact. But that comes to
- 38:29Speaker 1: rotations and making the extra efforts on the defensive side
- 38:33Speaker 1: of the ball, and when other teams are making shots
- 38:37Speaker 1: and you get deflated as a defensive unit, it can
- 38:41Speaker 1: be very frustrating. That's where things are at now.
- 38:44Speaker 3: Now.
- 38:45Speaker 1: The question is on the defensive side of the ball,
- 38:50Speaker 1: and we take a step forward in that extra, second, third,
- 38:55Speaker 1: fourth effort category to keep us in games. And I'm
- 38:58Speaker 1: saying keep us in games right now because as we've
- 39:01Speaker 1: seen on the road, it's been ugly. So that's the
- 39:05Speaker 1: defensive side of the ball. I mean, it's almost a
- 39:08Speaker 1: fact of how much do we really want it? And
- 39:12Speaker 1: under Hoiberg the last couple of years anyways, that hasn't
- 39:16Speaker 1: been the issue. Now go back to two, three, four
- 39:20Speaker 1: years ago under Fred. This is similar effort and motivation
- 39:25Speaker 1: that we've seen of you know what it is, what
- 39:29Speaker 1: it is, we don't care, and the score reflects that.
- 39:34Speaker 1: On the offensive end, we are all over the place
- 39:40Speaker 1: right now. A couple of puzzling things that come to mind.
- 39:45Speaker 1: I mean, Connor season is our spark. As far as
- 39:49Speaker 1: shooting threes, he's still not in the starting lineup. I
- 39:55Speaker 1: understand that maybe there's some physicality or why ability issues
- 40:01Speaker 1: on the defensive side of the ball, but let's be real,
- 40:05Speaker 1: he is the guy that can knock down shots for
- 40:08Speaker 1: this team. Bryce Williams has been Mia the past few games.
- 40:14Speaker 1: He had his breakout was top two or three in
- 40:16Speaker 1: the Big Ten in scoring, and that has fallen off.
- 40:19Speaker 1: Teams have started to key in and take away his
- 40:21Speaker 1: mid range jumper, which was a very big strength of
- 40:25Speaker 1: his game. And right now I don't know what we
- 40:29Speaker 1: have for an inside presence. I mean, Andrew Morgan has
- 40:32Speaker 1: now been scouted very heavily and people know what he
- 40:36Speaker 1: can do. Braxton Mia has never really been an offensive threat,
- 40:39Speaker 1: and Bark has yet to turn the tables as far
- 40:43Speaker 1: as the offensive side of the ball. We're not getting
- 40:47Speaker 1: much production out of our point guards. In fact, last
- 40:50Speaker 1: game we didn't even start Aaron Nullis or Raley Wooster.
- 40:55Speaker 1: We just are seeming to lack an identity once again
- 41:00Speaker 1: under a Fred Hoiberg team. And you want to talk
- 41:05Speaker 1: about what leaves the losses in the Big Ten, and
- 41:08Speaker 1: some of them have been close, but a lot of
- 41:09Speaker 1: them not. When you go on scoring droughts, this is
- 41:14Speaker 1: what happens. We're mixing starting lineups up right now, trying
- 41:21Speaker 1: something different. Okay, great, Like I don't read into that
- 41:24Speaker 1: stuff too much. You got to find the five guys
- 41:27Speaker 1: that are going to give your best option to win
- 41:30Speaker 1: and that combines both offensive and defensively. What you think,
- 41:35Speaker 1: and yeah, we're deep, but we still lack the playmaker,
- 41:40Speaker 1: the score, the go to guy. It was Bryce very clearly.
- 41:46Speaker 1: It's still I think needs to be Bryce, but we
- 41:48Speaker 1: have to find ways to get him to be a
- 41:51Speaker 1: part of this offense in an efficient way without playing
- 41:56Speaker 1: like we used to with Cam Mack, with Alonzo Verge,
- 41:59Speaker 1: with Teddy. It can't be that kind of basketball because
- 42:02Speaker 1: that clearly didn't work and that really destroys the locker room.
- 42:06Speaker 1: We have to find some adjustments here to get Bryce
- 42:11Speaker 1: Williams back going with his talent. So where do things
- 42:16Speaker 1: go from here for Husker basketball? Great question. We've said
- 42:22Speaker 1: get to five hundred and the big ten that'll get
- 42:25Speaker 1: you in the tournament. That's still a true statement. I think,
- 42:28Speaker 1: I really do. But the schedule's toughening up here. We
- 42:32Speaker 1: just played Wisconsin on Sunday, another road game that we
- 42:37Speaker 1: talked about that wasn't pretty. Two more ranked opponents coming up,
- 42:42Speaker 1: beginning with Illinois on Thursday at home. That'd be a
- 42:45Speaker 1: big one, but there's nothing to believe that we're going
- 42:48Speaker 1: to win that game right now, given our last few
- 42:50Speaker 1: home games. It used to be the PBA the vault,
- 42:55Speaker 1: no one could come in and win. Well guess what
- 42:58Speaker 1: now it's happened twice. Does this team have fight left
- 43:04Speaker 1: in them? Under Fred Hoiberg, under this coaching staff, to
- 43:08Speaker 1: get back to the conversation of middle of the Big
- 43:14Speaker 1: ten pack, that's where we're at right now. I don't
- 43:17Speaker 1: want to say I don't believe it, but it's been
- 43:21Speaker 1: scary the last few games, and it's almost been as
- 43:25Speaker 1: fun as it was to watch with this team a
- 43:28Speaker 1: month ago. It's almost been equally as tough to watch
- 43:31Speaker 1: from the last few weeks. So five hundred and the
- 43:37Speaker 1: Big Ten, I think that's the goal. But right now,
- 43:40Speaker 1: don't even think about that. Let's just think about winning
- 43:42Speaker 1: a couple of games. We talked about how you lose
- 43:46Speaker 1: a game on the road, you know, you make up
- 43:48Speaker 1: for it for winning it at home, or vice versa.
- 43:50Speaker 1: Lose a game at home, then you got to steal
- 43:51Speaker 1: one on the road or right now, we're not winning
- 43:53Speaker 1: at all, so throw that out the window as well.
- 43:56Speaker 1: We have to find a way to win games. The
- 43:59Speaker 1: Big Ten conference is not very very top heavy. As
- 44:04Speaker 1: we've mentioned before, everybody is in a very similar vote.
- 44:08Speaker 1: There's a lot of winnable games left on the schedule,
- 44:12Speaker 1: There's going to be a lot of close ones. But
- 44:15Speaker 1: does his team have the fight in the momentum to
- 44:18Speaker 1: push through that? That's the question. That's what's yet to
- 44:21Speaker 1: be seen. And if they don't, could this be the
- 44:25Speaker 1: end of Fred Hoiberg at Nebraska. What does it look
- 44:29Speaker 1: like for him if we can't get even a Big
- 44:37Speaker 1: ten tournament birth of being left out of there. I
- 44:42Speaker 1: don't know, I don't think. I don't know what the
- 44:45Speaker 1: administration is going to think of that, given how the
- 44:49Speaker 1: year started, given how we finished the year last year,
- 44:51Speaker 1: and then given where we're going. Now, that's my two
- 44:56Speaker 1: cents here on Nebraska basketball. Let's move on to the
- 45:01Speaker 1: second topic here is Nebraska football, And without going detailed
- 45:07Speaker 1: into the recruiting like we have in the past, there's
- 45:10Speaker 1: still a lot of rumors news out there of now
- 45:15Speaker 1: some of the guys on the teams that played in
- 45:18Speaker 1: the semi finals and the National Championship, of potential transfers there,
- 45:22Speaker 1: the portals still crazy. We know that, we know there's
- 45:26Speaker 1: gonna be a lot of moving parts from now until
- 45:29Speaker 1: the spring season kicks. Off here in a couple of months.
- 45:36Speaker 1: What I am thinking about as a Husker football fan
- 45:39Speaker 1: right now and rule in the direction this program is going,
- 45:43Speaker 1: is you have to build a program and a roster
- 45:47Speaker 1: and you have the ability to do it now in
- 45:48Speaker 1: the portal that you think gives us the best chance
- 45:51Speaker 1: to win in Nebraska given what we have coming back
- 45:54Speaker 1: and what we're able to retain from last year's team,
- 45:59Speaker 1: whether that be for the NFL Draft or for people
- 46:03Speaker 1: leaving in the portal or just graduating. Here's the pieces
- 46:06Speaker 1: we have coming back. What pieces do we need to
- 46:09Speaker 1: add from the portal from the recruiting classes to get
- 46:13Speaker 1: what you think gives us the best chance to win?
- 46:15Speaker 1: That is ultimately your job as the head coach, as
- 46:18Speaker 1: a coaching staff of a Division one football program. Dylan
- 46:23Speaker 1: Royola still lacks to run the ball as a quarterback.
- 46:27Speaker 1: And that's the third piece is developing your current players
- 46:30Speaker 1: into what you believe. We have heard that that is
- 46:34Speaker 1: what we think needs to be. One potential solution for
- 46:38Speaker 1: next year is Dylan Royola running the ball more. Maybe
- 46:41Speaker 1: not completely designed. We're not saying Lamar Jackson type stats
- 46:46Speaker 1: in play design, but being serviceable. Look at all these
- 46:50Speaker 1: guys in the college football playoff. Look at him, Look
- 46:53Speaker 1: at Will Howard. Look what Riley Leonard does. Look at
- 46:57Speaker 1: Quinn Ewers. What he can do with his legs. Look
- 47:00Speaker 1: what even he can do. He's not a running quarterback,
- 47:03Speaker 1: but all four quarterbacks and the college football semi finals
- 47:07Speaker 1: have the ability to be elusive in the pocket, scramble
- 47:11Speaker 1: when need to, and yeah when we need a when
- 47:13Speaker 1: you need a first down, call a design quarterback carry
- 47:16Speaker 1: up the middle. Look at the NFL teams that are left,
- 47:19Speaker 1: Look at the Eagles, look at the cheeks. That is
- 47:23Speaker 1: what college football and football needs. That's what you need
- 47:26Speaker 1: as a quarterback. So that is one big item to
- 47:30Speaker 1: improve on. Heading in as you think of an identity,
- 47:34Speaker 1: I think that's what that's that's what a coaching staff
- 47:36Speaker 1: should believe in. No matter where you're at, what level
- 47:39Speaker 1: you're playing at, that should be a part of your identity.
- 47:45Speaker 1: But this leaves the conversation into positions and what are
- 47:49Speaker 1: you recruiting? What type of people do you want to get?
- 47:52Speaker 1: What's most important when you're building a team, when you
- 47:56Speaker 1: if you want to relate it to basketball, you know
- 47:58Speaker 1: what kind of players are you going at? After you
- 48:00Speaker 1: going after the three level scorer wing? Are you going
- 48:06Speaker 1: after a strong center? First? Is that how you want
- 48:08Speaker 1: to build your team around? Do you want a point
- 48:10Speaker 1: guard that just manages the game? What are you building?
- 48:13Speaker 1: How are you building your team? When it comes to
- 48:16Speaker 1: Nebraska football and this staff in the program in general,
- 48:23Speaker 1: it starts and I really like this thought because I
- 48:28Speaker 1: heard this from somewhere else, but it's true. It starts
- 48:30Speaker 1: with the people that are closest to the football on
- 48:34Speaker 1: the snap. That starts with your offensive line, specifically your
- 48:38Speaker 1: center and guards, and then defensively, your interior defensive lineman.
- 48:44Speaker 1: Those are your meaty, mighty boys up front that are
- 48:47Speaker 1: going to do so much for you. If you're strong
- 48:50Speaker 1: at that position, that, to me, you just want to
- 48:55Speaker 1: start somewhere.
- 48:56Speaker 2: You start there. I get it.
- 48:58Speaker 1: Quarterbacks very important, I get it. There's other positions that
- 49:01Speaker 1: are very important. But if you don't have anything up front,
- 49:04Speaker 1: we saw that with Adrian Martinez. Adrian Martinez was the
- 49:08Speaker 1: CFL or xfl UFL whatever it's called, player of the
- 49:12Speaker 1: Year this last year. You see it. That program is
- 49:17Speaker 1: similar to us, like k State. You see it how
- 49:20Speaker 1: Iowa has trash quarterbacks a year after year but continue
- 49:25Speaker 1: to outplay Nebraska because it starts upfront. If we don't
- 49:34Speaker 1: get that established from a recruiting standpoint, from a transfer
- 49:37Speaker 1: portal standpoint, and it's limited. It is limited in the
- 49:42Speaker 1: portal with the offensive lineman. But if you can't start
- 49:45Speaker 1: there and get those pieces figured out, it doesn't matter
- 49:51Speaker 1: anywhere else what you have.
- 49:52Speaker 2: It doesn't.
- 49:55Speaker 1: I don't know. I can't say for certain that this
- 49:57Speaker 1: coaching staff believes in that. I don't know. We are
- 50:00Speaker 1: trying to get lineman in your crew, and they talk
- 50:02Speaker 1: about it, but that doesn't mean crap when you go
- 50:05Speaker 1: out in the field and our line continues to struggle
- 50:08Speaker 1: against average teams. They weren't atrocious this year like they
- 50:13Speaker 1: have in the past couple. But our strength of our
- 50:15Speaker 1: team is not our offensive line. Hell, I don't know
- 50:17Speaker 1: what our strength of our team is. We better be
- 50:19Speaker 1: figuring that out. So I would start there and guess what.
- 50:23Speaker 1: Speaking to that same point, Number two is your quarterback.
- 50:28Speaker 1: It's very important, but it's the quarterback that fits into
- 50:32Speaker 1: what you want to do in your identity. What does
- 50:36Speaker 1: Matt Rule want out of his quarterback? What does Dana
- 50:41Speaker 1: Holgerson now Marcus Saderfield before what do they want out
- 50:47Speaker 1: of their quarterback? What is their ideal prototype to start
- 50:51Speaker 1: the year, to start the tenure. We grab Jeff Simms,
- 50:55Speaker 1: whop flop. Okay, we go out and get Dylan Rayola. Great,
- 51:02Speaker 1: but is that the kind of quarterback that you're wanting
- 51:05Speaker 1: for your system or because you've got Dylan now you're
- 51:09Speaker 1: having to redesign your entire system to fit the type
- 51:12Speaker 1: of quarterback that he is. Dylan had negative rushing yards
- 51:16Speaker 1: negative in high school. That's fine. He's very talented. We've
- 51:20Speaker 1: seen the talent of his arm. We know what he
- 51:23Speaker 1: can do mentally on that side of the ball. But
- 51:28Speaker 1: he's got no legs, and that's fine. If you want
- 51:30Speaker 1: to put your eggs in that basket, you have better
- 51:33Speaker 1: either develop him into where he can be mobile, because
- 51:37Speaker 1: every other great college football NFL team right now that's
- 51:40Speaker 1: what their quarterbacks can do. Or you better be damn
- 51:45Speaker 1: good at figuring out a way to use him in
- 51:47Speaker 1: the passing game. And goes back to the offensive line.
- 51:51Speaker 1: Better have a damn good offensive line to not let
- 51:54Speaker 1: him get sacked and hit back there in the pocket.
- 51:56Speaker 1: That wasn't the cases here, Dylan adds some miss of
- 52:00Speaker 1: his own he's still a freshman. I get it, But
- 52:02Speaker 1: don't make that an excuse.
- 52:03Speaker 3: People.
- 52:04Speaker 1: Okay, if we want to hold him to a standard
- 52:06Speaker 1: of being a five star quarterback and one of the
- 52:10Speaker 1: top in his class and Patrick Mahomes comparisons and this
- 52:14Speaker 1: guy having Heiden come if we want to, if we
- 52:16Speaker 1: want to hold him to that, don't be making the excuse. Ah,
- 52:18Speaker 1: he's just a freshman. He's got a long ways to learn. Well,
- 52:22Speaker 1: that's the truth. I agree with that. It's up to
- 52:26Speaker 1: the staff develop him into what they want to get
- 52:29Speaker 1: out of Dylan Royola at the quarterback position, the Dylan specifically,
- 52:36Speaker 1: but the quarterback position I think is second most important.
- 52:39Speaker 1: After you talk about your interior offensive line, and I'll
- 52:43Speaker 1: just throw this in there too, the rest of your
- 52:45Speaker 1: line is probably next important to me. You know, your tackles,
- 52:49Speaker 1: your dns, your pass rushers, the guys that are blocking
- 52:53Speaker 1: the past rushers are protecting your quarterback. I think that's
- 52:56Speaker 1: the next most important. Yes, above running backs and receivers
- 53:01Speaker 1: and your secondary. I think that's very important. I'm gonna
- 53:07Speaker 1: throw a fourth one here, and this maybe is a
- 53:10Speaker 1: little bit of a recency bias, but I think this
- 53:12Speaker 1: is more important than these next next positions as far
- 53:15Speaker 1: as winning close games, and I'm gonna group them into one,
- 53:19Speaker 1: but it is your specials and special teams players. And
- 53:22Speaker 1: I'm not talking about we need the best punter in
- 53:25Speaker 1: the country. I'm not saying that that'd be nice, but
- 53:29Speaker 1: it's important from a standpoint of winning football games. I
- 53:33Speaker 1: don't know that it's a third of the game. Some
- 53:36Speaker 1: coaches like to call special teams a third of the game.
- 53:39Speaker 1: I wouldn't go that far, but I would say special
- 53:46Speaker 1: teams wins and loses you a lot of games. Ask
- 53:48Speaker 1: Iowa and then ask Nebraska for different reasons. I think
- 53:54Speaker 1: it's more important than having an elite running back. I
- 53:58Speaker 1: do from what we've seen in the past, special teams,
- 54:01Speaker 1: kicking the ball, hell snapping the ball, holding the ball,
- 54:06Speaker 1: punting the ball, covering, kickoff, all of that combined is
- 54:13Speaker 1: way more important to me than any other position outside
- 54:17Speaker 1: of the offensive line, defensive line, quarterback. Next up, I'm
- 54:26Speaker 1: going linebackers. I think linebackers are your guys that have
- 54:33Speaker 1: to fly around the field. They're making a lot of
- 54:35Speaker 1: calls at your quarterback. On defense, They're the ones that
- 54:38Speaker 1: are being able to see a lot of the adjustments.
- 54:42Speaker 1: So you know, some teams play with two, three, four,
- 54:44Speaker 1: depending on the formation. I think your linebackers are more
- 54:48Speaker 1: important than and guess what, they're next closer to the
- 54:52Speaker 1: ball as we work our way out after them. Shortly after,
- 55:02Speaker 1: I'd say your running backs. I think the ability to
- 55:08Speaker 1: stop the run, which goes to the defensive groups, and
- 55:11Speaker 1: then the ability to run the ball efficiently and effectively matters.
- 55:17Speaker 1: And I really just hit home. Running backs, I think
- 55:21Speaker 1: is seeing their value in importance more so this year
- 55:24Speaker 1: after watching some of these guys, Cam Scattabo from Arizona State,
- 55:28Speaker 1: ash and Genty from Boise State. Those were not great
- 55:31Speaker 1: football teams all around, but single handedly those running backs
- 55:35Speaker 1: are damn good. And you put those guys on a
- 55:39Speaker 1: team like Nebraska, I think it significantly improves your chances
- 55:43Speaker 1: of winning a lot of games. But I would also
- 55:47Speaker 1: say those teams have an equally, if not better offensive
- 55:50Speaker 1: line than Nebraska, and people might disagree with that, and yes,
- 55:53Speaker 1: their quality of opponents are different, but our schedule was
- 55:59Speaker 1: pretty cake glass year. It's gonna be pretty cake next year.
- 56:04Speaker 1: So having a running back and I think Emma Johnson
- 56:11Speaker 1: showed signs of that later in the year. As far
- 56:13Speaker 1: as what he could be as far as being more
- 56:16Speaker 1: of a feature back, I don't think he's put the
- 56:21Speaker 1: level of those other two that I just mentioned, but
- 56:23Speaker 1: he's pretty dang good. I think it's smart to use
- 56:28Speaker 1: a guy like that and give him more carries if
- 56:32Speaker 1: that's your only option. Now, Dante Daldell out in the portal.
- 56:36Speaker 1: We'll have some new guys in. We'll see if we
- 56:38Speaker 1: can rotate some backs. I don't think it's as important
- 56:42Speaker 1: as far as usage, depending on the guys that you've got,
- 56:45Speaker 1: but they have to be able to make a guy
- 56:47Speaker 1: miss in the second level. They have to be able
- 56:49Speaker 1: to get an extra two or three yards after contact
- 56:52Speaker 1: here and there. Not every time, but here and there.
- 56:54Speaker 1: That has to be part of your run game. Is
- 56:58Speaker 1: your running backs have to be solid. Next, I would
- 57:03Speaker 1: go second to the bottom. Here is a secondary. I
- 57:08Speaker 1: think secondary is important. There's a lot of teams that
- 57:11Speaker 1: like to throw the ball. I think we've got exploited
- 57:13Speaker 1: in there in that area before. I just don't see
- 57:18Speaker 1: them as important because they're furthest away from the ball.
- 57:21Speaker 1: They're still important. All these positions are important to an extent,
- 57:24Speaker 1: But I just think it's the second to least important,
- 57:27Speaker 1: because my least important is wide receivers, and that's who
- 57:30Speaker 1: ultimately is defending them. Another thing over the last couple
- 57:34Speaker 1: of years that I have, just amongst talking to people
- 57:40Speaker 1: and thinking about these teams and how they're formed at
- 57:43Speaker 1: all levels in football having success. How many of these
- 57:49Speaker 1: stud teams have just elite wide receivers. I mean, there's
- 57:53Speaker 1: a there's a few, there's exceptions, right, you know, look
- 57:58Speaker 1: at some of the teams this year in Collegeville. I
- 58:00Speaker 1: would say, Ohio State had some pretty elite wide receivers
- 58:03Speaker 1: and they won the national title. Great. They also had
- 58:05Speaker 1: elite running backs. They also had an elite offensive line,
- 58:09Speaker 1: quarterback position, Will Howard was serviceable. Penn State, you're telling
- 58:15Speaker 1: me they had elite wide receivers. No, Notre Dame. Absolutely not.
- 58:22Speaker 2: Texas.
- 58:24Speaker 1: Yeah, they had a couple of pieces, but I wouldn't
- 58:26Speaker 1: say necessarily elite. Look at the other teams that made
- 58:30Speaker 1: the playoffs, Boise State, Arizona State, Okay, we talked about
- 58:33Speaker 1: them already. Their strengths running the ball, SMU. They like
- 58:38Speaker 1: to run the ball receivers at the college level, and
- 58:43Speaker 1: now look at the pro level. The Kansas City Chiefs.
- 58:46Speaker 1: Tell me how many elite wide receivers they have had
- 58:49Speaker 1: in their six or seven year AFC Championship appearance in
- 58:53Speaker 1: a row. Run Tyreek Hill for a little bit, you
- 58:57Speaker 1: could call him elite Kelsey tight end. Tight ends in
- 59:03Speaker 1: a unique position. Now that I'm bringing that up. Where
- 59:06Speaker 1: do you throw tight end at offensive line and receiver?
- 59:12Speaker 1: So I guess you want to balance it out first
- 59:14Speaker 1: and last. They're right in the middle as far as
- 59:16Speaker 1: importance goes. But the Chiefs, it's a committee of wide receivers.
- 59:22Speaker 1: They just plug in, replace because they have all the
- 59:26Speaker 1: other pieces. Look at the Eagles. Look what they did
- 59:30Speaker 1: last year, in the year before DeVonta Smith, AJ Brown. Okay, yeah,
- 59:38Speaker 1: they're good receivers and maybe elite, but look what they
- 59:42Speaker 1: added this year and look where their identity is shifted
- 59:44Speaker 1: to in twenty twenty four and twenty five offensive line,
- 59:49Speaker 1: run the football. Saquon Barkley by far the best turning
- 59:53Speaker 1: back in the NFL this year. Look at the Lions.
- 59:57Speaker 1: The Lions score point at will this year. A'mn ross
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: Saint Brown?
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: Great?
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: Can anybody tell me who their number two receiver is?
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: That's not a fancy football guru. My points is wide receivers,
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: They're not very important. If you have the other pieces
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: and things, your identity, and you establish the run game,
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: your receivers are going to get open and make plays.
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: And I get it.
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: We've had guys and we've blamed our receivers. Our receivers
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: don't get open. I get it. But man, every year,
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: all we hear about is how good these transfers are
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: and how much improved our receivers that. I'm not disagreeing
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: with that, But let's focus on the offensive line first.
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: Let's focus on getting the established exactly what we want upfront,
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: the players closest to the ball, and work our way out.
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: The wide receiver position I don't think is very important
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: out of every position on the team that you want
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: to categorize, I think it's the absolute bottom. I don't
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: even think it's close. Does it help have elite playmakers?
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: It does, In fact, I would say it more so
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: helps to baill you out Samurai there. You know a
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: guy like that, Wandale, a guy like that. You know
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: guys that can just flat out run. I think that helps,
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: But man, I don't think it's the difference maker on
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: a football team. Is having a good wide receiving group.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: So anyways, I thought that was a good place to
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: a good discussion to have here as we're building our
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: roster for the next year, as we start to talk
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: about our spring roster heading into the twenty twenty five season,
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: what is important? What is this coaching staff believes important
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: because we're not gonna know, we're gonna hear that every
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: position is important and how everything's going well because that's
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: what we do in Nebraska and that's what we're gonna hear,
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: and how great everything is. What it's truly gonna get
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: valued is going to show on the field when we
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: play Cincinnati and Arrowhead Stadium starting in twenty twenty five.
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: That's gonna tell us the direction we're going. Will Dylan
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: have lost any weight and look a little more mobile?
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: We've heard that he's going to and it's important. Let's
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: see it. Let's see it. Okay, last topic conversation here.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: College football playoff wraps up Ohio State. Nebraska loses to
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: them by four, and you know, right around then, the
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: Michigan loss just seemed to spark Ohio State and the
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: best team won the College Football Playoff this year. I
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: don't think that's a question. I don't think you can
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: debate it. They went through Tennessee, Oregon, Texas and Notre
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: Dame in four games and won the national title. Name
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: any other team in college football that could take that
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: four game stretch.
- 1:03:01Speaker 5: And do that.
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: There's not one out there. By the way any team
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: was playing at the end of the year. In fact,
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: did we get the two best teams in the championship?
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: I think we might have.
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: What other format do you people think would have produced
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: different teams the way that everybody was playing at that
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: point in the year, Texas with Texas Georgia. We saw
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: what happened to Georgia throughout the year. It wasn't the
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: normal Georgia we knew in the past few years. Oregon, great,
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: you're undefeated, but we saw their flaws. They were the
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: undefeated team, rightfully, so they were the number one seed.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: That's great, but Ohio State almost should have won the
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: first time they played, and then they just absolutely obliterated
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: them in the quarterfinals. So there's all this time and
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: media and conversation about restructuring, reformatting, redoing the seeding. Can
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: we just relax and let it play out for a
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: couple of years, I get it. Boise State, Arizona State,
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: the three and four seeds. This year, I get it.
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: That was.
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: Unique. Did they earn their way? Yeah, they did as
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: far as what they could do, Like, I get it.
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: But did it impact the final result of what you
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: want out of a college football playoff, ultimately crowning the
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: best team in college football?
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: No it didn't.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: And yeah, all four teams that played in the first
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: four one in Week two, people are gonna play the
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: excuse card. Well, you know the vibe that these teams
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: had to buy and these teams shouldn't have to buy. Okay,
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: that's fine, but guess what if all the teams of
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: the buye would have won, it would have been Well,
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: it's unfair to the team that didn't play in Week
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: one because or it's unfair to the team that did
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: play because they're banged up and they had to play
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: an extra game. There's always gonna be reasons and justifications
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: and excuses. I totally understand that that's what the media
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: and all the talk are unculturable. That's what they want.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: They just want constant conversation. But I think we got
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: what we wanted this year, and I don't see any
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: problem with the way that it was formatted. It's not
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: gonna stay because there'll be too many people that complain
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: about it. I'm guessing we'll see fourteen or sixteen teams soon.
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: There may be a restructuring of the rankings. YadA, YadA, YadA.
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: That's it's whatever. There's more football going on now, which
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: is what I care about. And the best team still
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: won by playing a tournament, no matter what style you
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: do of anything, I think more than eight teams, you're
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: probably gonna get the best team to win it. That's ultimately,
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: whoever wins the chip's the best team. We say it
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: in college basketball every year they've had a sixty fourteen
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: tournament for sixty eight team for who knows how long.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: If anybody wants to argue that the best team doesn't
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: win it, how can you that they're the ones that
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: won six straight. That that is just the reality. The
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: best team wins the tournament. Now, you play a series
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: like the NBA, like baseball, you know, where there's maybe
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: a little bit more volatility. Yeah, but when it comes
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: to football and lining two teams up, if you can't
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: find a way to win in sixty minutes of football,
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: then I don't you're not the better team of the two,
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: saying that for years about Nebraska O the best three
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: and nine team. Ever, No, we weren't. We won three games.
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: You have sixty minutes to prove you can win a game.
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: My take on the playoff, I wish we would just
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: leave it, let it play out. I get at the
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: conference realignment and stuff is going to continue. The PAC
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: twelve's already got new teams in it. Next year it's
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: gonna look different, so we're gonna have to adjust it
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: for stuff like that. But let's not go all on
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: cahoots about the format and how if this, if that,
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: if then it's never gonna be perfect. Nobody's ever gonna
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: be completely satisfied with the way. Let's leave it for
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: a few years, see what happens. Obviously, restructuring, restructure as needed,
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: but we'll just let it be.
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: That'll do it for myself again, unique episode this week.
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: We'll be back next Sunday. Release on Monday. Hopefully Nebraska
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: basketball can find a way to get back on the
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: winning side of things.
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: Go Bigger read that
