Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:08media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:11Every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:15the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:20Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:22OK, reminder that the next two days there will be Mini Scroll.
- 0:26I'm actually doing mini tech scrolls more for you guys
- 0:28instead of Annabelle because I am going to be podcasting live
- 0:32from Sunrise Festival, which is a big startup festival here in
- 0:36Sydney. So you guys will still get
- 0:38regular mini scroll like mini tech tomorrow, mini scroll
- 0:41Thursday and then you'll get like little female founder
- 0:44interviews at the end, which I'm really excited to bring you
- 0:48guys. So I hope you guys like the next
- 0:50couple of days of episodes and then I'm going to have a mini
- 0:53scroll episode on Friday for you.
- 0:55So the first word that I have for you guys is that TikTok
- 0:57creator Kelly Haier has been accused of stealing the Apple
- 1:01Dance from a smaller creator. So we recently reported that
- 1:05Kelly, who is credited as the creator of the Charli XCX Apple
- 1:08Dance, is suing Roblox for using her dance in an emote.
- 1:12Now, another creator with the handle Studio .54 posted a video
- 1:16claiming that Kelly copied her dance.
- 1:19I don't know Studio 54's name. I couldn't find it anywhere and
- 1:23I didn't want to go digging too much and then like reveal her
- 1:27name and her feel like she was doxed or something.
- 1:30Not that I think she'd come across mini scroll, but like
- 1:32just in case. So I don't know what her name
- 1:34is, but this is what the video said.
- 1:36How it feels to watch a certain fruit dance clearly inspired by
- 1:39the choreography and a viral tick tock you posted three days
- 1:42earlier turn into a brand PR deals and even a lawsuit over
- 1:46quote use of choreography without permission.
- 1:49So yes, it's very clear that studio 54 decided to bring this
- 1:53to the Internet to call Kelly out on this because she is suing
- 1:57Roblox. The apple dance started in June
- 2:002024. So it's been quite a while.
- 2:02It's been almost a year and Kelly has had so much success
- 2:06off the back of this like genuinely so much virality, so
- 2:09many brand deals. She was with Charli XCX during
- 2:12her tour when she came to like her specific stop like she's had
- 2:16a lot off the back of this. So it seems like the creator,
- 2:19Studio 54, decided to call this out specifically because of the
- 2:22lawsuit. When you watch Studio 54's
- 2:25dance, it's not a full dance. She's like lip syncing to the
- 2:29song and she's like kind of doing little hand gestures and
- 2:33like arm gestures like some dancing.
- 2:35But it's basically from like her chest up.
- 2:36It's a very close up video. It's not like a full dance.
- 2:39But the moves, a lot of them are very similar.
- 2:41And the one that gets me, that makes me think, OK, I think that
- 2:45this is true is the Apple heart breaking?
- 2:48It's just the part where you put your hands above your head into
- 2:51a heart and then you kind of break it apart, like the apple
- 2:53breaking. So that is exactly the same.
- 2:56Like this girl did that exact movement with her hands, and
- 2:59then she does the drive thing and, like, drive.
- 3:01Sure. OK.
- 3:01Yeah. Like, we can all, like, gesture
- 3:03like that for driving. But the apple, the apple, I feel
- 3:06like that's the most. That's like the signature part
- 3:08of the dance and it's also, in my opinion, like the most unique
- 3:13move of that whole dance. So I feel like that's really
- 3:15SUS. So then she shared some receipts
- 3:17because people were like, how do we know you're telling the
- 3:18truth? So she showed that Kelly's dance
- 3:21was posted on June 14th and Studio 54 is it was posted on
- 3:25June 11th. I would say it's quite divided.
- 3:27I'm actually surprised more people are not like against
- 3:30Kelly in this because she is not well liked on the Internet.
- 3:33They find her really annoying. They don't love like the family
- 3:36background she comes from. A lot of people call her like a
- 3:39colonizer because of some of the business that her family does in
- 3:42Hawaii. People also call her like a
- 3:44neppo baby. Like I don't really know the
- 3:46full back story on Kelly Hare, but I know that she is not well
- 3:49liked. So yeah, I'm actually more I'm
- 3:51surprised more people are not on Studio 54's side.
- 3:54But I think because some of the moves are quite generic.
- 3:57I don't know, the fact that she did that Apple move at the exact
- 4:01part that Kelly does the Apple move, I don't know.
- 4:04I think it's sauce. I think it's sauce.
- 4:06I do think there was some heavy inspiration taken there.
- 4:09And that is kind of the reality of TikTok.
- 4:10And that's kind of like the point of TikTok.
- 4:12It's literally a platform that was built off of the concept of
- 4:15like, sharing creative ideas and dances and songs and like
- 4:19remixing it yourself and like making it your own with like,
- 4:22stitches and duets. Like if you think about the
- 4:23features that first launched TikTok, that is kind of like the
- 4:27nature of the platform. But yeah, very interesting.
- 4:30Let me know what you guys think. OK, the next story that I have
- 4:33for you guys is that Wellness influencer Janelle Rohner admits
- 4:36to failing to disclose that she was using GLP One medication
- 4:41while selling lifestyle programs to her followers.
- 4:44So Janelle is a fitness and Wellness influencer with over 5
- 4:47million followers. She got really popular from her
- 4:50What I Eat in A Day videos and videos where she tracks and meal
- 4:53preps for her macros. Last week, Janelle shocked her
- 4:57followers when she revealed on YouTube that she's been using
- 4:59GLP One medication to help with her weight loss journey for the
- 5:03past year. In the video, she insisted it's
- 5:06not magic that she still had to show up and eat well and work
- 5:09out to achieve these weight loss goals.
- 5:12However, for this duration, Janelle was also selling a $200
- 5:17weight loss course to her followers without disclosing
- 5:20that she was also using this medication to help in her
- 5:23personal weight loss, 1 commenter wrote.
- 5:25It's that she's selling a $200 course to people to help them
- 5:28lose weight when counting macros wasn't even enough for her to
- 5:31lose all of the weight she wanted to.
- 5:33Another wrote You're taking people's money, misleading them,
- 5:35and not being honest with yourself either.
- 5:37So the criticism is not that she was taking a GLP one, it's that
- 5:41she fully didn't disclose it despite selling these very
- 5:44expensive courses to her followers.
- 5:46It is deceptive and I think it completely validates the
- 5:50negative feelings that people have towards influencers with
- 5:53them, like being grifters and liars and kind of all of these
- 5:56perceptions that we have of them.
- 5:58Like This is why people have these perceptions.
- 6:01So a lot of her followers are calling this fraud.
- 6:04I don't really know what constitutes as like legally
- 6:08fraud or not, but in my opinion, this is absolutely deceptive
- 6:12marketing practices. This reminds me on a very
- 6:15different scale, but it reminds me of Lashgate with Michaela
- 6:18Noguera when she seemingly put on like false lashes to promote
- 6:21a L'Oreal mascara without disclosing that she was wearing
- 6:24false lashes. And the discussion there was
- 6:26like, yeah, sometimes in mascara commercials, you will have a
- 6:29model or the actor, whoever's in the commercial, like wearing
- 6:32false lashes, but they'll always have a disclaimer at the bottom.
- 6:35It's very small and you're probably not going to read it,
- 6:37but there's always a disclaimer there that says like, these
- 6:39lashes have been enhanced either in post or maybe like with false
- 6:42lashes or like, whatever. But with influencers, there's
- 6:45not those same, like, regulations when it comes to
- 6:48things like this. I mean, there's like they're
- 6:49trying to implement things like that, but you know, it's not
- 6:52like standard standardized across the board quite yet.
- 6:55The difference, however, is that 1A L'Oreal mascara is like
- 6:58$7.00, not $200.00. And two, selling any type of
- 7:03lifestyle related program when you're promising to help people
- 7:07like change their lives and you're impacting what they're
- 7:10putting in their body, that is so much more serious than just
- 7:14selling a product that, you know, washes off at the end of
- 7:17the day. There needs to be a lot more
- 7:19regulation around who can sell these programs and these plans.
- 7:23And in like the Wellness space, the fitness space, it is so
- 7:27filled with grifs. And yeah, this just must be so
- 7:31disappointing to her followers. I can't even imagine if I was
- 7:35bought in and I was following her advice.
- 7:38And I know, I know the flip side to these arguments whenever we
- 7:41talk about an influencer deceiving their followers is
- 7:43like, well, you shouldn't go to influencers for these things,
- 7:46like unless they are qualified in this area, which I
- 7:49understand. But we talked about how these
- 7:51like Wellness, lifestyle fitness influencers do make these things
- 7:55a lot more accessible. Like prior to social media, if
- 7:58you wanted to like learn how to work out, there was really no
- 8:02way to do it unless somebody taught you or you got like a
- 8:04personal trainer or you went to the gym and just like watched
- 8:07people, maybe you did a class or something.
- 8:08But you know, now it's like before I started weightlifting
- 8:12years ago, you know, that really intimidated me.
- 8:15So I spent weeks and weeks and weeks like knowing I was going
- 8:18to start weightlifting. And so I would spend weeks
- 8:21finding fitness influencers where I I liked their programs,
- 8:24I liked their vibe, I would follow them.
- 8:26And then I would watch like hours of YouTube on how to do
- 8:30like a barbell SWAT, you know, and like I taught myself through
- 8:34YouTube and through Instagram. And so yes, you can absolutely
- 8:38say that like, we as consumers need to be more diligent and we
- 8:42need to have more like literacy around who we're following and
- 8:46what we're following them for and their qualifications and all
- 8:48of that. But one of the best parts about
- 8:49influencer culture is how it has democratized so many experiences
- 8:53for people and so many industries.
- 8:54So Janelle has responded to the backlash.
- 8:57And she says that she's going to be more transparent from now on.
- 9:00And, you know, she sees all the criticism and stuff.
- 9:02But, yeah, I just, I feel really bad for her followers,
- 9:05especially if they spent $200 on her program.
- 9:08OK. The last word that I have for
- 9:09you guys is so random, but Delaney Roe is apparently dating
- 9:15BJ Novak. This is like the wildest
- 9:17crossover ever, but TikTok star Delaney Roe is reportedly dating
- 9:21actor BJ Novak. So Delaney is super famous for
- 9:25her skits where she pretends to be like highly unrealistic
- 9:28female characters in movies like the quote wise beyond her years
- 9:33daughter taking care of her father after her mother dies, or
- 9:36the quote quirky hot mess female lead of a ROM com.
- 9:39You guys know who Delaney is like she was one of the OG skit
- 9:43Tik tokers to like really pop off in that niche.
- 9:45So now several outlets are reporting that she is dating BJ
- 9:49Novak and sources, quote UN quote have confirmed it to
- 9:53People magazine. So I'm going to believe it.
- 9:56As we know BJ Novak is probably questionable, but like probably
- 10:00we think the baby daddy to Mindy Kaling's children.
- 10:03Is that confirmed? Something in my heart of hearts
- 10:07tells me that was recently confirmed in like a book or
- 10:10something. But they were like besties and
- 10:12everyone thought that they were together for a long time and
- 10:14that he was probably the father of her children.
- 10:16But I guess now he's dating Delaney Rowe.
- 10:18So Delaney and BJ were first spotted together back in
- 10:20December and actually d'amois reported on it.
- 10:23But like it didn't really get picked up.
- 10:24And today people are losing their minds.
- 10:26But when I was Googling it, I could find like sparse but like
- 10:29articles and reports from December that they were
- 10:33together. But maybe it was just like
- 10:34speculation. Now it's been like confirmed
- 10:36this is crazy. I don't know like this pairing
- 10:39to me like I don't know it's just so random happy for them I
- 10:42guess anyways guys that's it for mini scroll today.
- 10:45Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
- 10:48Please rate review and subscribe.
- 10:49We're trying to get to 10,000 YouTube subscribers, so please
- 10:52subscribe to us there. I will talk to you tomorrow live
- 10:56from sunrise and I said this before, but like they did
- 11:00promise that we will get a relatively quiet area.
- 11:03So fingers crossed. Also please manifest at the
- 11:05light is OK. We cannot bring all of our
- 11:07lighting. Like we already have to bring
- 11:08all of our camera equipment. And I was like, we just cannot
- 11:12bring our lighting. But yeah, so they said they're
- 11:14going to try and get us a spot that also has good lighting.
- 11:16So like fingers crossed also manifest that like my
- 11:19presentation goes, well tomorrow I'm presenting on the founder
- 11:22stage. I'm like presenting like a 20
- 11:23minute speech on like Centennial World and being the founder of
- 11:26Centennial World, which is insane.
- 11:28And then the next day, I'm doing a panel on the future of media
- 11:31and how, like, AI and the rise of citizen journalism and social
- 11:35media and stuff has changed. You know, what traditional
- 11:37journalism means and like, the future of the industry.
- 11:39And it's just like, gonna be a lot like, I am so looking
- 11:44forward to like, 6:00 PM on Thursday night.
- 11:47But I'm trying not to wish my life away.
- 11:49OK? I love you guys and I will talk
- 11:50to you tomorrow. Bye.
