Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Kiss Breakfast.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Hey, there's a brand new show coming out on stand
- 0:04Speaker 2: called Gnomes. It's got a lot of gory sort of horror.
- 0:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Basically, gnomes come alive. Yeah, I know, right? We have
- 0:13Speaker 2: two of the stars, Asa Butterfield and Megan Smart. They
- 0:17Speaker 2: are joining us live.
- 0:18Speaker 4: Hello.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Good morning.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Good morning.
- 0:20Speaker 4: Hello.
- 0:21Speaker 5: Good morning.
- 0:23Speaker 4: This sounds very intriguing. So it's obviously like a horror
- 0:27Speaker 4: slash horror. dark comedy series.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Is that right? Can you tell us a bit about it?
- 0:31Speaker 5: So we, yeah, we were pitched this and I think
- 0:35Speaker 5: this really perfectly encompasses the show. It's Gremlins meets Hot Fuzz.
- 0:40Speaker 5: It's got the kind of 90s, slightly tongue in cheek,
- 0:45Speaker 5: sort of silly horror of Gremlins. And it's got the
- 0:49Speaker 5: humour and pace and energy of Hot Fuzz. And what
- 0:53Speaker 5: we've managed to kind of merge is this really outrageous,
- 0:57Speaker 5: really original, really fun show. And it's really exciting to
- 1:03Speaker 5: finally have everyone see it.
- 1:05Speaker 3: And it's done here in Australia, in Victoria, right?
- 1:07Speaker 2: And Megan, you're an Aussie girl, so that must be
- 1:10Speaker 2: great to film something here.
- 1:11Speaker 5: Yeah, it is.
- 1:12Speaker 4: It's really exciting for Australia to see something so original
- 1:15Speaker 4: come out of Australia.
- 1:16Speaker 1: And, you know, it's set in Melbourne, but it kind
- 1:19Speaker 1: of could be anywhere. It's in this elevated world and
- 1:23Speaker 1: we've got America. I was watching it again last night
- 1:25Speaker 1: and You know, there's so many different accents, and this
- 1:27Speaker 1: is American, a couple of different British ones, and we
- 1:30Speaker 1: have Asa. So it sort of feels like it could
- 1:33Speaker 1: be anywhere as well. Yeah, okay.
- 1:34Speaker 3: And did you show Asa around Australia?
- 1:37Speaker 1: Yeah. He got the full tour, yeah. We gave him
- 1:41Speaker 1: koala to hold.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Oh, what did you think of the koalas, Asa? Because
- 1:45Speaker 3: they kind of stink from memory.
- 1:47Speaker 2: They're not like as cuddly and as lovely as you
- 1:50Speaker 2: think they would be.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Their paws are really sharp.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Yeah. What did you think?
- 1:53Speaker 5: Yeah, they're kind of cool. They're boring, but they're kind
- 1:56Speaker 5: of cool.
- 1:57Speaker 4: Boring, yeah, they are.
- 1:59Speaker 3: They're not turtles.
- 2:00Speaker 1: It's fair to them.
- 2:02Speaker 5: But, you know, I love all animals, so they're great.
- 2:05Speaker 2: I can see, mate, right behind you, you've got a
- 2:08Speaker 2: gorgeous pussy cat there.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Is that your cat?
- 2:11Speaker 5: Yeah, there is my cat. That's Atlas.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Is it a male or female? He's a boy. I'll
- 2:16Speaker 3: pick him up.
- 2:16Speaker 5: He doesn't like being by himself.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Oh, God love him. Can we get him up to
- 2:20Speaker 3: the camera? I'm a cat lover.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Mikey's a big cat guy as well. You've got like
- 2:25Speaker 1: six now, don't you?
- 2:26Speaker 5: He's been waiting for this.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Oh, look at him.
- 2:29Speaker 1: It's his debut. He's such a scene stealer. He loves
- 2:32Speaker 1: his motion.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Oh, he is a big boy.
- 2:35Speaker 5: Hello.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Oh, my God. Isn't he huge?
- 2:37Speaker 5: I can do the rest of the interview with him
- 2:39Speaker 5: in my hand.
- 2:39Speaker 3: This is amazing.
- 2:40Speaker 5: Yeah, do it.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Do it. Asa, how different was it filming Gnomes? compared
- 2:46Speaker 1: to Sex Education?
- 2:47Speaker 4: Because I am a huge fan of Sex Education.
- 2:49Speaker 1: I love the series. Obviously, it's quite a different storyline.
- 2:54Speaker 5: I mean, well, yeah, firstly, I was in Australia, so
- 2:57Speaker 5: I was on the total other side of the world.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Other side, yep.
- 3:01Speaker 5: You know, when you're an actor, you do get to
- 3:04Speaker 5: travel a lot and you get to immerse yourself in
- 3:06Speaker 5: these places and kind of escape from home. And what
- 3:09Speaker 5: was so lovely about this show is how, welcome I
- 3:13Speaker 5: felt in Melbourne and how quickly it felt like home.
- 3:17Speaker 5: It felt like somewhere I could spend my time and
- 3:19Speaker 5: be myself and settle into my routine.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Oh, look at him. He's just rolled off screen.
- 3:27Speaker 4: He's like more belly rubs.
- 3:29Speaker 3: You know the show, right? There you go.
- 3:31Speaker 5: He's had enough.
- 3:31Speaker 3: He's had enough, yeah. They only tolerate it for a while.
- 3:35Speaker 5: We were given such license to bring our own comedy
- 3:38Speaker 5: and our own ideas and our own energy into this
- 3:41Speaker 5: into this show as, as we did in sex ed. Um,
- 3:45Speaker 5: but there's some, there was something uniquely, a kind of
- 3:49Speaker 5: wink almost to the camera, which we all knew was
- 3:52Speaker 5: there under, under these lines and under what we were doing,
- 3:55Speaker 5: which was really empowering because you could just, you could
- 3:59Speaker 5: do the thing that you probably couldn't get away with
- 4:02Speaker 5: in another show. And sometimes it didn't work, but sometimes
- 4:05Speaker 5: it did. And it was like, oh my God, that's,
- 4:07Speaker 5: that's gold. And it's those moments which we really, you know,
- 4:13Speaker 5: we're searching for.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Yeah, but we love that.
- 4:15Speaker 4: I think the more unhinged a show is, the more
- 4:18Speaker 4: attention it gets and people kind of lock in.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Hey, and AC, you said recently in an interview, it's
- 4:24Speaker 2: disappointing people don't know how to do magic tricks anymore.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Have you got like a go-to magic trick?
- 4:31Speaker 5: Okay, so I'm going to follow up here. This has
- 4:35Speaker 5: been taken out of context. Yes, I think people should
- 4:37Speaker 5: do magic tricks. But I'm just a magic trick enjoyer.
- 4:41Speaker 5: I just want other people to do more magic tricks.
- 4:44Speaker 5: I can't do any. I just like other people being
- 4:47Speaker 5: able to do them.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:48Speaker 5: Which I think is fair. I think it's, you know.
- 4:50Speaker 1: You just want to be entertained.
- 4:52Speaker 5: I just want to be entertained.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Constant entertainment. Who was that guy that came in here
- 4:56Speaker 1: who could read our mind?
- 4:58Speaker 4: Oh.
- 4:58Speaker 1: We had some guy in here. Ash Magic.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Ash Magic.
- 5:01Speaker 1: He was a freak in the best sense.
- 5:03Speaker 5: Who said that?
- 5:04Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Oh, that's one of our many producers out there. Oh, yeah.
- 5:07Speaker 4: Sorry. Sorry.
- 5:08Speaker 3: That was magic.
- 5:11Speaker 1: That was Ash, yeah.
- 5:12Speaker 5: Yeah, I was like, it was in my head. Like,
- 5:13Speaker 5: who is this guy that reads my mind?
- 5:15Speaker 1: I was going to say, you should hook up with
- 5:16Speaker 1: Ash Magic.
- 5:17Speaker 4: If next time you're in Australia, get him to come
- 5:20Speaker 4: out and he gets inside your brain.
- 5:23Speaker 3: It's magic. It really is.
- 5:25Speaker 2: And talking of magic, we are going to watch all
- 5:28Speaker 2: these gnomes come to life. Gnomes, you can watch it
- 5:31Speaker 2: now only on Stan, Ace of Butterfield, Megan Smart.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Thank you, guys.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Thanks, guys.
- 5:37Speaker 5: Thanks for having us.
