- 0:05Speaker 1: But we are we have Liberation Day, as you know,
- 0:09Speaker 1: on April second.
- 0:10Speaker 2: President Trump has called Wednesday, April second, liberation Day. He
- 0:15Speaker 2: calls it liberation from foreign goods in the US markets
- 0:20Speaker 2: and making sure that US goods are what's being purchased
- 0:23Speaker 2: by consumers here. But we don't exactly know all the
- 0:27Speaker 2: details of what President Trump has planned. We don't know
- 0:30Speaker 2: which sector is going to hit, which countries, how high
- 0:32Speaker 2: the cost will go. We're we're told that it's still
- 0:36Speaker 2: in flux. Things are still being finalized, but we know
- 0:38Speaker 2: that if he goes through with this, it could have
- 0:40Speaker 2: a severe impact on costs for consumers. It is already
- 0:44Speaker 2: having an impact on the markets. So we are all
- 0:48Speaker 2: waiting to see the details of what exactly the President
- 0:50Speaker 2: Trump has planned. Well, we can look at the auto
- 0:53Speaker 2: tariffs that President Trump said would go into effect actually
- 0:56Speaker 2: on April third. He announced them earlier this month, and
- 0:59Speaker 2: we have independent economic analyzes, actually the one that comes
- 1:02Speaker 2: from the famed economists Art Laugher, he's actually one of
- 1:06Speaker 2: President Trump's favorite economists. In his own private analyzes, mister
- 1:10Speaker 2: Laffer said it could raise the prices of cars by
- 1:13Speaker 2: more than forty seven hundred dollars for consumers. Now, President
- 1:17Speaker 2: Trump says with his tariffs on cars, it could bring
- 1:21Speaker 2: more of the manufacturing back home. It would ultimately lower prices,
- 1:25Speaker 2: but Trump President Trump also says he doesn't care if
- 1:28Speaker 2: the prices go higher for a little bit, because it
- 1:30Speaker 2: means that ultimately people would buy American products, and that's
- 1:33Speaker 2: his goal here. I would watch for reaction from Republican lawmakers,
- 1:37Speaker 2: especially from these farm states. Tariffs, depending on how they
- 1:41Speaker 2: are shaped, tend to hurt farm states the most. And
- 1:44Speaker 2: these are Trump voters. So what are voters in Iowa,
- 1:47Speaker 2: South Dakota, Kansas and what are the representatives from those areas?
- 1:51Speaker 3: What are they going to say?
- 1:52Speaker 2: That's going to be a really interesting storyline to watch
- 1:54Speaker 2: in the next coming days and weeks.
- 2:01Speaker 4: President Trump was joined at the White House by Kid
- 2:04Speaker 4: Rock when Trump signed an executive order targeting ticket scalpers.
- 2:08Speaker 4: And now look who's here on this program now, the
- 2:11Speaker 4: man Kid Rock himself. So we're going to get into
- 2:14Speaker 4: ticket prices in a second. But first I want to
- 2:16Speaker 4: hear about your dinner with the President. What did you
- 2:19Speaker 4: Bill Maher and Dana White and the President talk about.
- 2:24Speaker 5: You know, it went so, it went so well, we
- 2:29Speaker 5: talked about a lot of things that we had in common,
- 2:32Speaker 5: with which Bill Maher is a big, you know, supporter
- 2:34Speaker 5: of Trump's stance on the border of ending wokeism. The
- 2:38Speaker 5: President even asked him about policy, like what he thought
- 2:41Speaker 5: with Iran getting a nuclear weapon and how Israel should react.
- 2:45Speaker 5: Bill's a big supporter of Israel. You know, we broke Bretton,
- 2:49Speaker 5: talked about things we had in common, and it could
- 2:51Speaker 5: not have been more cordial, more nice.
- 2:52Speaker 6: I think everyone was so pleasantly surprised.
- 2:55Speaker 5: I mean, it was so nice to have my friend
- 2:56Speaker 5: Dana White there and Dana goes, you know, he told me,
- 2:58Speaker 5: He goes, Bob, you did the right thing here. This
- 3:00Speaker 5: was a good thing because everyone was a little suspect
- 3:02Speaker 5: about it. Even the President had called me a few
- 3:04Speaker 5: days ago, so he goes, what the hell you got
- 3:05Speaker 5: me doing here? And I'm like, I'm just trying to
- 3:07Speaker 5: break bread with some of our biggest critics and say like, hey,
- 3:10Speaker 5: it's okay to talk to one another. You know, we
- 3:12Speaker 5: can maybe just maybe bring a little bit of civility
- 3:14Speaker 5: back to this country for reasonable people.
- 3:17Speaker 4: How do you make tight of friendship with Bill mah
- 3:20Speaker 4: because you're very different on politics.
- 3:22Speaker 5: I think, yeah, we've you know, thirty years ago when
- 3:28Speaker 5: he had a show Politically and Correct. It was the
- 3:29Speaker 5: first TV show I had really ever done early in
- 3:32Speaker 5: my career. And it's not like we stayed best friends
- 3:35Speaker 5: through that, but you know, he's had me on his
- 3:36Speaker 5: podcast and on his TV show, and I'm like, man,
- 3:39Speaker 5: this is good to go.
- 3:40Speaker 6: You know. It's it's easy for me to go on
- 3:42Speaker 6: Fox News.
- 3:43Speaker 5: Everyone's so friendly and so nice, and we kind of
- 3:45Speaker 5: aligned with our thoughts and ideas.
- 3:46Speaker 6: But I kind of like.
- 3:48Speaker 5: Going into the lions down a little bit and talking
- 3:50Speaker 5: to people who differ than me and seeing, you know,
- 3:52Speaker 5: where we can connect on things and just try to
- 3:54Speaker 5: be a little more civil.
- 3:55Speaker 6: I've been.
- 3:55Speaker 5: I've been one of the most polarizing figures out there.
- 3:57Speaker 5: I know that, but I'm like, hey, maybe we can
- 3:59Speaker 5: just try to be a little nicer to each other.
- 4:02Speaker 4: What the hell you're from Detroit, I believe, home of
- 4:05Speaker 4: the Big three auto make becerus.
- 4:06Speaker 7: I got that.
- 4:07Speaker 4: What do you make of Trump's tariffs on autos and
- 4:10Speaker 4: auto parts coming into the country.
- 4:14Speaker 6: I think it's great.
- 4:14Speaker 5: I think we should be making more of these cars
- 4:16Speaker 5: in Detroit. You know, I know they make the Ford
- 4:18Speaker 5: Raptor there and things, but I know there's other cars
- 4:20Speaker 5: that are you know, we designed them in Detroit, some
- 4:23Speaker 5: of the Big Three, and then the engines and they're
- 4:25Speaker 5: assembled in Canada or Mexico. And I think, I think
- 4:28Speaker 5: it's great for our auto workers, for everybody. For why
- 4:32Speaker 5: wouldn't we want and you know, and now now the
- 4:34Speaker 5: President's talking about, you know, giving people a tax break
- 4:36Speaker 5: if they buy a car that's actually built in America.
- 4:39Speaker 6: This is this is all great news for Detroit in
- 4:41Speaker 6: my opinion.
- 4:41Speaker 4: Did that come up with discussion last night.
- 4:46Speaker 5: No, we talked about that in the Oval Office a
- 4:47Speaker 5: little bit, but no. Dinner was a dinner was awesome.
- 4:51Speaker 5: It was It was weirdly so awesome that just to
- 4:54Speaker 5: see I mean the President, Bill could not have been more.
- 4:57Speaker 6: Engaged and just had such a nice conver station. And
- 5:00Speaker 6: then one point, I will make his bill.
- 5:02Speaker 5: You know, he has obviously been a big supporter of
- 5:04Speaker 5: so many you know, of the left, you know, supporting
- 5:07Speaker 5: you know, Clinton and Kamala and Barack and everyone.
- 5:10Speaker 6: And he had never been to the White House.
- 5:13Speaker 5: And the President took us up to the private residence
- 5:16Speaker 5: and we were showing Bill the Gettysburg address in the
- 5:18Speaker 5: Lincoln bedroom and I was like, you've never been here.
- 5:20Speaker 6: Bill was like no, And I was like, can you
- 5:22Speaker 6: believe you're here with President Trump showing you around?
- 5:25Speaker 5: And he was like, everybody just knew this was It
- 5:27Speaker 5: was a special Hopefully it's a special moment.
- 5:30Speaker 6: It sets it sets an example.
- 5:32Speaker 1: You know.
- 5:32Speaker 5: I never anticipated on trying to set a positive example
- 5:36Speaker 5: in this country for something like this, but you know,
- 5:40Speaker 5: the Lord works in mysterious ways. And Paul Pastor Paul
- 5:43Speaker 5: had prayed over me before I went to the Oval
- 5:45Speaker 5: office and it was just, man, it was.
- 5:46Speaker 6: It was one of the one of the neatest days
- 5:48Speaker 6: of my life.
- 5:48Speaker 4: I will say, I want to just get to one
- 5:50Speaker 4: last one ticket scalping. Want listen to what to mister
- 5:53Speaker 4: Trump had to say about the executive order on it
- 5:55Speaker 4: role type place.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I mean, Bob's a lot of other artists, says the artists.
- 6:00Speaker 1: And they go out with one hundred dollars ticket and
- 6:02Speaker 1: it sales for two thousand dollars the following night. Ticket
- 6:05Speaker 1: sales and scalping and all of the gouging that you
- 6:09Speaker 1: have been reading about. It's gotten worse and worse with
- 6:11Speaker 1: time and I didn't know too much about it, but
- 6:14Speaker 1: I checked it out and it is a big problem.
- 6:16Speaker 1: And I thought, I think you've been trying to get
- 6:18Speaker 1: this done for twenty years or something.
- 6:20Speaker 8: He said.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Trump got it done in two weeks. But we came
- 6:24Speaker 1: up with a very serious io.
- 6:28Speaker 4: I just wonder how you fix this When you've got
- 6:31Speaker 4: enormous demand for a very limited supply of tickets, how
- 6:35Speaker 4: do you decide who gets the tickets?
- 6:39Speaker 5: Well, it should be when you go into the queue
- 6:41Speaker 5: to get tickets. Not everybody to a hugely popular show
- 6:44Speaker 5: is going to get tickets. But as an artist, you know,
- 6:47Speaker 5: we want to get the majority of us want to
- 6:49Speaker 5: get the prices we set into the hands of the
- 6:52Speaker 5: fans at those prices, I've been the first one to say,
- 6:54Speaker 5: and the President hates it when I say, like sir,
- 6:56Speaker 5: I'm a little overpaid. I would rather be more of
- 6:58Speaker 5: a hero to working class people so they can go
- 7:00Speaker 5: to more shows. And this is the first step to really,
- 7:03Speaker 5: you know, try to get the bots and the bad actors,
- 7:05Speaker 5: the sculpers out of the way. Ultimately, and I'm a
- 7:08Speaker 5: capitalist and a deregulation guy, but ultimately what I would
- 7:11Speaker 5: like to see is get some legislation pass that puts
- 7:13Speaker 5: a cap on the resale of concert tickets, like a
- 7:16Speaker 5: ten percent cap, and that that eliminates all the bs
- 7:19Speaker 5: and the bad actors right off the bat. So you
- 7:22Speaker 5: know I can try, because if I sell a ticket
- 7:24Speaker 5: for twenty dollars, somebody's gonna mark that up to two hundred.
- 7:26Speaker 5: I don't see any of the money. The fans don't
- 7:28Speaker 5: get anything out of it. It's just, you know, you're
- 7:30Speaker 5: just paying people to do nothing. So I'm I just
- 7:33Speaker 5: want to make it more affordable. We want to make
- 7:35Speaker 5: America fun again, make America affordable again.
- 7:38Speaker 4: Kid Rock, thank you very much for being on the show.
- 7:40Speaker 3: Real pleasure, don't get true.
- 7:42Speaker 6: I love your show.
- 7:43Speaker 4: Varney, Oh, I died and went to heaven.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Kid Rop, You're all right. Thank you very much on date.
- 7:48Speaker 4: So we appreciate it and we hope to see again soon.
- 7:51Speaker 6: That's a lot.
- 7:51Speaker 3: That's great.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Thank you very much.
- 8:00Speaker 5: You want to say something, Yeah, anybody who's it doesn't
- 8:03Speaker 5: matter your politics.
- 8:04Speaker 6: First off, thank you, mister president, because this has happened
- 8:08Speaker 6: at liking speed.
- 8:09Speaker 5: I know you put. I want to make sure Lena
- 8:11Speaker 5: Habbah Alena Hobba gets her credit to because I know
- 8:13Speaker 5: she worked very hard on this, but thank you for
- 8:15Speaker 5: making this happen so quick. Anyone who's bought a concert
- 8:17Speaker 5: ticket in the last decade, maybe twenty years, no matter
- 8:19Speaker 5: what your politics are, knows that it's a conundrum. You
- 8:22Speaker 5: buy a ticket for one hundred bucks, by the time
- 8:23Speaker 5: you check out, it's one hundred and seventy.
- 8:25Speaker 6: You don't know what you're in charge for.
- 8:26Speaker 5: But more importantly, these bots, you know, they come in
- 8:29Speaker 5: to get all the good tickets to your favorite shows
- 8:32Speaker 5: you want to go to, and then they're relisted immediately
- 8:35Speaker 5: for sometimes a four or five hundred percent markup, and
- 8:38Speaker 5: the artists don't see any of that money.
- 8:40Speaker 6: And you know, ultimately, I think this is a great
- 8:42Speaker 6: first step.
- 8:44Speaker 5: I would love down the road if there would be
- 8:45Speaker 5: some legislation we could actually put a cap on the
- 8:47Speaker 5: resale of tickets. And I'm a capitalist and a deregulation guy,
- 8:51Speaker 5: but they've tried this in some places in Europe and
- 8:54Speaker 5: it seems to be the only thing that's us as
- 8:56Speaker 5: artists to be able to get the tickets in the
- 8:58Speaker 5: hands of the fans at the prices we see that.
- 9:00Speaker 5: I'll be the first one to say, and I know
- 9:02Speaker 5: the president doesn't like want to say this, but I'm
- 9:04Speaker 5: a little overpaid right now.
- 9:06Speaker 6: It's kind of ridiculous.
- 9:07Speaker 5: I would rather be, you know, a heroes of working
- 9:10Speaker 5: class people and have them be able to come attend
- 9:12Speaker 5: my shows and give them a fair ticket price. I
- 9:14Speaker 5: can't control that right now, so hopefully this is a
- 9:16Speaker 5: step to really be able to make that happen. You know,
- 9:19Speaker 5: a lot of artists and a lot of fans who
- 9:21Speaker 5: love conference and music are gonna be very appreciative.
- 9:24Speaker 1: And I think Bob is more interested in the fans
- 9:27Speaker 1: and the people that are having to pay crazy prices
- 9:31Speaker 1: than he is the artist. Maybe the artist a little bit,
- 9:34Speaker 1: but the fans a lot. I've spoken to him over
- 9:35Speaker 1: the years about it, and it's been it bothers him,
- 9:39Speaker 1: It bothers a lot of other artists too. See the
- 9:42Speaker 1: artists and they go out with one hundred dollars ticket
- 9:44Speaker 1: and it sales for two thousand dollars the following night.
- 9:48Speaker 1: And they seem to be able to sweep up the
- 9:50Speaker 1: best locations too, which is pretty amazing.
- 9:52Speaker 5: So they've only enforced that box act one time, I
- 9:55Speaker 5: believe a couple of years ago in New York. Say
- 9:57Speaker 5: I think. So we've got a couple million dollar fine.
- 9:59Speaker 6: And that's why I talk. I'm able to force that act.
- 10:01Speaker 1: And who is the primary culprit who sells these tickets?
- 10:04Speaker 5: It's the scalpers. It's that these bots go in and
- 10:07Speaker 5: they're automated. Well, there's reselling markets.
- 10:10Speaker 6: Yeah, Peter, that's all right.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Don't get them it about maybe maybe they're more innocent
- 10:17Speaker 1: than we think.
- 10:18Speaker 5: Well, if you think of it, like if if Ticketmaster
- 10:21Speaker 5: sells a ticket, if you buy a ticket, go to
- 10:23Speaker 5: a show, you're in a lot of ways.
- 10:25Speaker 9: They're worst customer.
- 10:26Speaker 5: They make another seventeen whatever percentage every time that ticket resells.
- 10:30Speaker 5: So they don't want to enforce the bots Act necessarily
- 10:32Speaker 5: because they're making more money off it. Not the artists
- 10:34Speaker 5: don't see any of that money. But that's not what
- 10:36Speaker 5: I'm advocating for is for me to make more money.
- 10:38Speaker 5: I want the fans to have a fair ticket prices.
- 10:40Speaker 6: Be able to go and enjoy more shows.
- 10:42Speaker 5: I know people that can only they decide on a
- 10:44Speaker 5: family vacation. They're going to their favorite concert once a year,
- 10:46Speaker 5: rather than you know, my parents used to go see
- 10:48Speaker 5: multiple shows when you can afford them. Back in their day,
- 10:51Speaker 5: and I'd like to take my ticket prices lower. But
- 10:52Speaker 5: if I set my ticket prices low, these bots immediately
- 10:55Speaker 5: eat them up and they resell for one hundreds of
- 10:57Speaker 5: dollars more. And I'm just making these bad actors rich.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Well, I think this is a big step to getting
- 11:03Speaker 1: it stepped. Do you have own thing right?
- 11:06Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 11:06Speaker 9: I do.
- 11:06Speaker 10: Actually, I actually feel that the consumer is going to
- 11:11Speaker 10: take the money that they saved. And actually by merch
- 11:14Speaker 10: which you guys have a big percentage of, or do
- 11:16Speaker 10: concessions which you guys split with the venue on that
- 11:19Speaker 10: as well.
- 11:20Speaker 11: So I think there's.
- 11:21Speaker 5: Money sharing concessions a lot, but no those are We
- 11:24Speaker 5: try to but they don't want to.
- 11:26Speaker 6: They don't want to share it in the beer prices
- 11:28Speaker 6: and parking or any of that stuff.
- 11:29Speaker 5: But the bottom line is just money for everyone to
- 11:32Speaker 5: be made.
- 11:32Speaker 6: There's there's plenty of money to go around. You know,
- 11:34Speaker 6: no one's gonna really lose here.
- 11:36Speaker 5: You know, take a master if if we can get
- 11:37Speaker 5: a cap, they're gonna lose some money.
- 11:39Speaker 6: But I've already talked.
- 11:39Speaker 5: To CEO Michael and he's giving me his word he's
- 11:41Speaker 5: on board for it.
- 11:42Speaker 11: I was talking to Jacoby with Papa Roach earlier.
- 11:45Speaker 10: And by the way, he's a big fan of what
- 11:46Speaker 10: you're doing, President Trump.
- 11:47Speaker 11: Digging into this whole scalping in the box. A lot
- 11:52Speaker 11: of musicians you can say that they're they're with kid rock, Sir,
- 11:57Speaker 11: without a doubt, a lot of people are.
- 12:00Speaker 10: Would you ever wear a jacket like that?
- 12:02Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 12:02Speaker 1: I was thinking about doing it for tomorrow. We have
- 12:05Speaker 1: a big event coming up, and I was thinking about
- 12:07Speaker 1: doing it.
- 12:08Speaker 12: Sure, we heard from President Trump make comments at two
- 12:17Speaker 12: times in the last couple days about we're potentially running
- 12:19Speaker 12: for a third term.
- 12:20Speaker 7: Is that something that you would support him doing.
- 12:22Speaker 3: I don't think that's gonna happen. I think, honestly, man,
- 12:24Speaker 3: this is where you guys get caught around the axle.
- 12:27Speaker 7: He brought it up.
- 12:28Speaker 3: He's just having fun with it, you know, it's he's
- 12:30Speaker 3: just having fun with it. I wouldn't they get seriously
- 12:32Speaker 3: at all.
- 12:33Speaker 8: First of all, he joked, and so I think we
- 12:35Speaker 8: need to take that as a joke, not being literal.
- 12:37Speaker 7: What do you think that was tongue in cheek?
- 12:39Speaker 13: Of course?
- 12:40Speaker 7: Would you like to see President Trump run for a
- 12:42Speaker 7: third term? Okay, did you go to college?
- 12:45Speaker 12: I did you did you would you consider yourself to
- 12:48Speaker 12: have his sense of humor?
- 12:49Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 12:50Speaker 7: Okay, did you see what he said? Yeah he did.
- 12:52Speaker 3: Okay, do you think he was joking?
- 12:54Speaker 7: I'm honestly no, I'm sure.
- 12:56Speaker 3: Okay.
- 12:57Speaker 12: Then then whatever college you went to give him refund
- 13:00Speaker 12: Arizona State, definitely give them a refund.
- 13:03Speaker 7: Yeah, that's that's President Trump is joking.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Yes, that's just a dumb question. Okay.
- 13:11Speaker 13: They can't even help themselves because for the past several months,
- 13:15Speaker 13: Republicans insisted that Donald Trump was just kidding when he
- 13:19Speaker 13: made comments about running for a third term in office,
- 13:22Speaker 13: even though it's prohibited by the twenty second Amendment of
- 13:25Speaker 13: the Constitution. Well over the weekend, President made it clear
- 13:31Speaker 13: that he is very much, in fact serious about running
- 13:35Speaker 13: for a third term. In an exclusive interview with NBC News,
- 13:39Speaker 13: Trump said he's not joking about a third term, claiming
- 13:44Speaker 13: there are methods for doing so, adding, of course, quote
- 13:49Speaker 13: a lot of people want me to do it, but
- 13:51Speaker 13: I basically tell them we have a long way to
- 13:54Speaker 13: go back with me or George Conway and Sam Stein.
- 13:58Speaker 13: So I don't know which one of you two want
- 14:01Speaker 13: to bite at this apple, but I'm going to start
- 14:04Speaker 13: with you, George on this lucky lucky you, because I
- 14:07Speaker 13: want to play what happened in the oval with the
- 14:11Speaker 13: President on this very question just moments ago.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Let's take a listen.
- 14:16Speaker 13: If you are allowed, for some reason to run for
- 14:19Speaker 13: a third term, is there a thought that the Democrats
- 14:22Speaker 13: could try to run Barack Obama against you.
- 14:25Speaker 1: I'd love that.
- 14:27Speaker 6: I'd love that.
- 14:28Speaker 3: That would be a good one. I'd like that.
- 14:30Speaker 1: And no, people are asking me to run, and there's
- 14:33Speaker 1: a whole story about running for a third term.
- 14:35Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 14:35Speaker 1: I never looked into it. And they do say there's
- 14:39Speaker 1: a way you can do it, but I don't know
- 14:40Speaker 1: about that. But I have not looked into it.
- 14:43Speaker 13: Okay, there is no way you can do it because
- 14:45Speaker 13: it's a little thing called the Constitution of the United States.
- 14:47Speaker 3: And I'm going to have to stop you. There is
- 14:49Speaker 3: there a way you can do it. Yeah, okay, so
- 14:51Speaker 3: we'll talk about that, all right.
- 14:52Speaker 13: And number two, this idea that he's never looked in it. Look,
- 14:57Speaker 13: my initial thinking is if that question is put in
- 15:00Speaker 13: in front of me, given that the Constitution is there
- 15:02Speaker 13: to says twenty second member says you can't. You got
- 15:05Speaker 13: two terms that you would say no, the constitution doesn't
- 15:08Speaker 13: allow it and will move on.
- 15:10Speaker 3: But that was his answer. So what say you, sir,
- 15:13Speaker 3: so tell us how it can be done.
- 15:14Speaker 8: It can be done because the text of the constitution
- 15:17Speaker 8: textas the twenty second Amendment, would allow him not.
- 15:19Speaker 3: To be elected president.
- 15:21Speaker 8: It says no person shall be elected more than twice
- 15:24Speaker 8: to the office president, and no person shall be elected
- 15:26Speaker 8: more than once if he served more than he or
- 15:29Speaker 8: she'd served more than two years of someone else's term.
- 15:32Speaker 8: But it doesn't say you can't serve a third term.
- 15:35Speaker 8: So what could happen is he could be elected vice president.
- 15:39Speaker 8: And what could happen is that whoever was at the
- 15:41Speaker 8: top of the ticket could then disclaim the office, in
- 15:44Speaker 8: which case Trump would not have been elected, he would
- 15:48Speaker 8: have been elected vice president but acceded to the office,
- 15:51Speaker 8: or that press person who is elected president could resign
- 15:54Speaker 8: on twelve oh one on January twentieth.
- 15:57Speaker 9: And there is literally nothing in the content. So you
- 16:00Speaker 9: need to prevent that.
- 16:01Speaker 8: And this has been written about by law professors in
- 16:04Speaker 8: the past, before the Trump year, And the fact of
- 16:06Speaker 8: the matter is I read that one of those articles
- 16:09Speaker 8: today and the text is pretty clear, and actually the
- 16:13Speaker 8: legislative history is even worse because the legislative history of
- 16:17Speaker 8: the twenty second Amendment shows that the original drafts actually
- 16:23Speaker 8: prohibited holding and serving a third term, and they for
- 16:27Speaker 8: some reason, we have nothing to do with this current situation,
- 16:32Speaker 8: which I don't think they were thinking about. They changed
- 16:34Speaker 8: it to elected and so a literal meeting of the Constitution,
- 16:39Speaker 8: which I believe in, and I've discussed it with one
- 16:41Speaker 8: of the more I.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Mean, Larry Tribe, agrees with this.
- 16:44Speaker 8: Right he could they could pull this stunt and in
- 16:47Speaker 8: which case the whole hypothetical about.
- 16:49Speaker 9: Barack Obama could be made true too.
- 16:51Speaker 8: I could run as president and Barack Obama could run
- 16:54Speaker 8: as my vice president.
- 16:55Speaker 9: I'm not to guess. I'd have to Reritistero as a Democrat.
- 16:57Speaker 8: And then I could say, oh, I don't want to say,
- 17:00Speaker 8: and President Obama conservative. So you could theoretically have it.
- 17:05Speaker 8: It's completely insane, but it's legally possible.
- 17:08Speaker 13: So I need to put something a little extra in
- 17:10Speaker 13: my cup next time I talk to you about this issue,
- 17:12Speaker 13: because that just really took my brain to a whole
- 17:14Speaker 13: other level.
- 17:15Speaker 9: Yeah no, but it's not good.
- 17:17Speaker 13: But the reality of it is we are Sam we're
- 17:19Speaker 13: talking about Donald Trump here, right, So the idea that
- 17:23Speaker 13: Donald Trump is going to run as somebody's vice president
- 17:27Speaker 13: just so he can be president, it's a little bit
- 17:29Speaker 13: rich for me, But I mean, I get what George
- 17:32Speaker 13: is saying, and there those are those technical aspects of it.
- 17:37Speaker 3: But I think something closer to the truth is, what
- 17:41Speaker 3: does it say that this is actually in.
- 17:44Speaker 13: The making or people are having the conversations in this
- 17:48Speaker 13: vein because.
- 17:51Speaker 3: On this face there's a constitutional bar.
- 17:54Speaker 13: What George said notwithstanding, but the reality of it is
- 17:58Speaker 13: there are efforts to solidify this presidency beyond it's it's
- 18:04Speaker 13: it's you know, sell by date or used by date.
- 18:09Speaker 14: How close is George to you? Because I don't want
- 18:11Speaker 14: to blow your brain too far that.
- 18:12Speaker 3: It hits him.
- 18:16Speaker 14: Step away, hold him down, No, don't hold him down.
- 18:19Speaker 14: But I will note that not only did the scenario
- 18:24Speaker 14: that George outlined is in fact what Trump himself brought
- 18:27Speaker 14: up yesterday, He has clearly researched the idea that he
- 18:31Speaker 14: would run as JD Vance's VP in twenty twenty eight
- 18:36Speaker 14: and then usurp the power in some form to become
- 18:39Speaker 14: present for a third term. Now that doesn't mean he's
- 18:41Speaker 14: going to do it all. All we know is that
- 18:44Speaker 14: someone at some point presented this idea to him, and
- 18:47Speaker 14: he's put it in his head that it's a possibility.
- 18:50Speaker 14: I happen to think still that this is a ruse
- 18:54Speaker 14: of some sort that as soon as he says he's
- 18:56Speaker 14: not running for a third term, he becomes a lame
- 18:59Speaker 14: done and then therefore the party moves on for him
- 19:02Speaker 14: and they don't feel like they, oh, may think he
- 19:03Speaker 14: was some sort of power over them. I believe journalistically
- 19:07Speaker 14: it's more important to cover what Trump does than what
- 19:11Speaker 14: he says. That being said, he keeps saying this stuff,
- 19:15Speaker 14: and we've talked to people in focus groups here at
- 19:19Speaker 14: the Bulwark, and his supporters are tentatively okay with it,
- 19:25Speaker 14: which to me means that if he were to go
- 19:27Speaker 14: ahead with it, there would be a basis support that
- 19:31Speaker 14: would be fine with it. And all these elected Republicans
- 19:34Speaker 14: who are now dismissive of it as merely a joke,
- 19:36Speaker 14: we know the history of that.
- 19:38Speaker 10: It's a joke.
- 19:39Speaker 14: It's a joke, it's a joke until it's actually not
- 19:41Speaker 14: a joke, and then they get in line.
- 19:49Speaker 15: Well, the clock is ticking towards what President Trump has
- 19:52Speaker 15: called America's Liberation Day.
- 19:54Speaker 3: He says he will.
- 19:54Speaker 15: Unveil a massive slate of import taxes on all countries
- 19:58Speaker 15: on Wednesday, though he's also promised to be kind. Tariffs
- 20:02Speaker 15: are taxes paid by US importers on foreign purchase goods.
- 20:05Speaker 15: Details are still limited on the range of the tariffs,
- 20:09Speaker 15: but there is growing on ease about what this tariff
- 20:11Speaker 15: war will mean for the global economy. UK government has
- 20:14Speaker 15: been trying to negotiate a last minute trade deal to
- 20:16Speaker 15: the exempt British goods, but confirmed yesterday it does expect
- 20:20Speaker 15: the UK will be hit when the import taxes are introduced.
- 20:24Speaker 15: President Trump has been speaking to the media in the
- 20:26Speaker 15: Oval Office, where he said he expects his tariffs to
- 20:28Speaker 15: give the US economy a major boost.
- 20:32Speaker 1: I think that we're going to be at five trillion
- 20:34Speaker 1: dollars of investment. I think you're going to have investments
- 20:38Speaker 1: very shortly. We're already three and af and we have commitments,
- 20:43Speaker 1: verbal commitments for a lot more, and numbers like that
- 20:46Speaker 1: have never been done in this country. And it's going
- 20:48Speaker 1: to get horrid. And this isn't two months. It's really
- 20:51Speaker 1: less than two months. Because since we've really gone.
- 20:53Speaker 3: Out with it.
- 20:54Speaker 15: They speak now to Maria Demercy's chief economist at the
- 20:57Speaker 15: Conference Board of Europe. Maria, good to have you with us.
- 21:00Speaker 15: Just listening to President Trump there, I wonder if you
- 21:03Speaker 15: agree if we could just look at the US first.
- 21:06Speaker 15: Do you think it's going to be a major boost
- 21:07Speaker 15: to the US economy these tariffs.
- 21:10Speaker 16: It's unlikely there would be a boost. I mean, the
- 21:12Speaker 16: first thing will be trade will necessarily reduce and that
- 21:16Speaker 16: will have an impact on the US economy. We've already
- 21:18Speaker 16: seen revisions in growth downwards upward, revisions for inflation, and
- 21:23Speaker 16: of course the stock markets that are extremely volatile. Nothing
- 21:26Speaker 16: of that is good for the US economy. But next
- 21:29Speaker 16: to that, there is other measures that follow the tariffs,
- 21:31Speaker 16: and that is corporate taxes reducing, trying to attract investments
- 21:36Speaker 16: back to the US, either from American economies that operate
- 21:39Speaker 16: elsewhere or from global economies. And actually there is some
- 21:43Speaker 16: evidence of that that some companies might be coming back
- 21:46Speaker 16: to the US that will boost investment. Whether the net
- 21:49Speaker 16: effect is positive, but it means to be seen. But
- 21:51Speaker 16: I am not hopeful.
- 21:52Speaker 15: Higher inflation, greater recession risks. That's what people are saying
- 21:56Speaker 15: for the US and obviously there's going to be a
- 21:58Speaker 15: knock on effect for the global economy as well. Tell
- 22:01Speaker 15: us what your thoughts are on what this could mean
- 22:04Speaker 15: for the rest of the world.
- 22:06Speaker 16: Again, you will have global effects everywhere, especially for jurisdictions
- 22:09Speaker 16: like the U where I live, which is a big
- 22:12Speaker 16: exporting region. We rely a lot on exports and therefore
- 22:15Speaker 16: experts to the US will necessarily suffer. The EU exports
- 22:19Speaker 16: a lot of the US bots and goods and services,
- 22:21Speaker 16: that of course will take a hit. But I think
- 22:23Speaker 16: global trade we take a hit. I think there will
- 22:26Speaker 16: be a reduction in trade that we haven't seen in
- 22:29Speaker 16: a long time except the pandemic era. And on top
- 22:33Speaker 16: of that, of course, we are going to have a
- 22:35Speaker 16: high increase in prices, and the consumer will see greater
- 22:38Speaker 16: inflation on goods and services that they buy on a
- 22:41Speaker 16: daily basis, and of course much less choice, So the
- 22:43Speaker 16: consumer will definitely worse off.
- 22:45Speaker 15: Marie, what about the stock markets around the world. Many
- 22:48Speaker 15: are saying that the hit from the tariffs could still
- 22:51Speaker 15: be coming. We haven't seen the worst of it yet.
- 22:54Speaker 16: No, we haven't until we have some certainty in terms
- 22:57Speaker 16: of what goes on in tariffs. So there will be latility.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Now.
- 23:01Speaker 16: It's interesting to say also that if we do have
- 23:03Speaker 16: some certainty of what tariffs will be, that would be
- 23:06Speaker 16: of course, but for the economy. But at least we
- 23:07Speaker 16: have some certainty of what it is. And you see
- 23:09Speaker 16: that we hear it from businesses that they want some
- 23:11Speaker 16: certainty so that they can prepare so some news, even
- 23:14Speaker 16: if they are bad news, it's important to reduce a
- 23:17Speaker 16: volatility and tell us a bit.
- 23:18Speaker 15: More about those US businesses that are starting to reshare
- 23:23Speaker 15: in response to the threats of tariffs. We don't know
- 23:26Speaker 15: yet what impact that will have. But how long does
- 23:28Speaker 15: it normally take for a business to do that.
- 23:31Speaker 9: It depends.
- 23:32Speaker 16: Big manufacturer, of course, find it difficult to relocate unless
- 23:35Speaker 16: they have already installations in the US. But we have
- 23:39Speaker 16: heard from Nvidia, the big semiconductor company, that they will reshure,
- 23:43Speaker 16: They will bring some of their operations in China back
- 23:46Speaker 16: into the US with huge investments for the next four
- 23:49Speaker 16: years in the US, which is effectively what President Trump wants.
- 23:52Speaker 16: He wants manufacturing back in the US. And we've also
- 23:55Speaker 16: heard Apple relocating back, bringing some of the Asian production
- 24:00Speaker 16: to the US in fear of tariffs hitting their Chinese operations,
- 24:04Speaker 16: so there is some movement which has also been helped
- 24:08Speaker 16: by corporate taxation reducing, which is one of the big
- 24:11Speaker 16: campaign points that praise the drum use. So it's not
- 24:14Speaker 16: just about tariffs, it's also about creating a much more
- 24:17Speaker 16: friendly environment conducing the businesses in the US.
- 24:20Speaker 15: It's so interesting to get as Marie. Thank you very much.
