- 0:00Speaker 1: I'll tell you. You know, I rewind a few years.
- 0:04Speaker 1: I think, Man, I had this one friend I talked
- 0:06Speaker 1: to all the time, and then he became super famous
- 0:10Speaker 1: and popular. Oh gosh, and he and then if and
- 0:13Speaker 1: then he would go home and hang out with his wife,
- 0:16Speaker 1: and you could tell what they did when they hung out,
- 0:18Speaker 1: because all that happened when kids starts showing up. Uh,
- 0:22Speaker 1: you know, you guys can like go for a walk
- 0:23Speaker 1: to sometimes.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Well I'm out, dude, I am out?
- 0:27Speaker 3: Man?
- 0:27Speaker 2: Is that it?
- 0:30Speaker 1: We talked. He's like, I think she legit wants a
- 0:32Speaker 1: small soccer team.
- 0:34Speaker 2: She did, but she's done.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Too now she's yeah, she's like I don't want any
- 0:38Speaker 3: more kids.
- 0:38Speaker 1: That's it.
- 0:39Speaker 3: So and I was like, hey, I was good with three. Yeah,
- 0:42Speaker 3: like four was a four was a surprise. So uh
- 0:47Speaker 3: but yeah, there they will be. There will be no more,
- 0:52Speaker 3: hopefully no more.
- 0:53Speaker 1: That's yeah, there's steps to take, but we'll talk about
- 0:57Speaker 1: that after. We'll talk after this. Yeah, how was life
- 0:59Speaker 1: going for honestly? Because you you are a guy who
- 1:03Speaker 1: literally you don't stop right because if anyone checks out,
- 1:07Speaker 1: social is such a window to your world. But you're
- 1:10Speaker 1: either on tour or writing, yeah, or you're on or
- 1:13Speaker 1: you're writing, or you're on tour, and then obviously, you
- 1:18Speaker 1: you know, once once the plane lands, you have to
- 1:20Speaker 1: be bad again and find time to be a husband again. Like,
- 1:23Speaker 1: how are things going.
- 1:24Speaker 2: It's it's good, I.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Mean, just because this year we're not as busy road wise,
- 1:31Speaker 3: so not playing as many shows.
- 1:33Speaker 2: And it's been.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Cool because like I'm excited to like ride again, you know,
- 1:40Speaker 3: I feel like it's not that I haven't always been
- 1:43Speaker 3: excited to write, but it's like, you know, I've just
- 1:46Speaker 3: feel like I'm in a good groove now and it
- 1:49Speaker 3: just excited to start making a new project.
- 1:51Speaker 2: But it's it has it's still busy, you know.
- 1:53Speaker 3: I mean I feel like, as you know, as the
- 1:56Speaker 3: kids get older, there's more t ball, more soccer, more
- 1:59Speaker 3: horse riding and all this stuff.
- 2:00Speaker 2: So the personal side has gotten busier.
- 2:04Speaker 3: But you know, fortunately we hit a year where it's
- 2:07Speaker 3: not as busy show wise, so it's been good riding.
- 2:11Speaker 3: I'll do my daughters eat up with it. Man, once
- 2:14Speaker 3: the horse do.
- 2:15Speaker 2: You know, do we have horses? Are we like riding
- 2:17Speaker 2: other people's horse? Now?
- 2:18Speaker 3: Other people realize that's coming though, right well, so luckily
- 2:22Speaker 3: in Nashville you can lease a horse, which I've never
- 2:25Speaker 3: known that this is a thing.
- 2:26Speaker 1: His tax bracket is way different than yours. Pump the brakes, but.
- 2:29Speaker 3: No, like I have never I've never heard of like that.
- 2:35Speaker 3: So like, uh, I have a friend that leases a horse.
- 2:38Speaker 3: So I's all right, this is perfect. I can get
- 2:40Speaker 3: down with leasing a horse. Because my daughter is like, hey,
- 2:44Speaker 3: we should you know, She's like, Dad, I want a horse.
- 2:46Speaker 2: I want a horse.
- 2:47Speaker 3: And I'm like, you're six, Like you might not want
- 2:49Speaker 3: you you might not care about horses in three years.
- 2:53Speaker 3: But as much as she's into him now, I think
- 2:56Speaker 3: we're I think we're going to be a horse fan,
- 2:58Speaker 3: so which I'm cool with.
- 2:59Speaker 2: But yeah, would rather not buy a horse right now.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Do you have a pool at your house? No? Because
- 3:05Speaker 1: I was gonna say, I feel like kids are either
- 3:06Speaker 1: I want a pool or I want a pony. There's
- 3:08Speaker 1: not both.
- 3:09Speaker 2: We don't have a pool.
- 3:10Speaker 3: So they went, they went pony, they went pony.
- 3:18Speaker 1: How How how tough can it be? Because we've obviously
- 3:22Speaker 1: been close with your wife as well, and she's such
- 3:24Speaker 1: a sweetheart. How tough is it? Because I see on
- 3:27Speaker 1: her social media you miss out on stuff right like
- 3:30Speaker 1: you miss out on trips you miss out on They
- 3:32Speaker 1: were at the beach a while back, right, Uh Is
- 3:35Speaker 1: that tough or is it also like I have to
- 3:38Speaker 1: do it. I have to do for them to enjoy
- 3:40Speaker 1: stuff like that.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Well, you know, it's funny, we were just kind of
- 3:42Speaker 2: talking about that.
- 3:43Speaker 3: There's the uh and I'll probably butcher the saying, but
- 3:46Speaker 3: it's like, you know, striving to give your kid a
- 3:50Speaker 3: better life, uh, and sometimes hinder your kid being a
- 3:54Speaker 3: good person.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Uh. So, like that's been.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Something that I've kind of tried to look into and
- 4:01Speaker 3: and and being like, man, you know, yeah, that's the goal,
- 4:04Speaker 3: is you you want to give all your kids, you know,
- 4:06Speaker 3: more than what you had and and all the opportunities,
- 4:10Speaker 3: but at the same time, your number one goal is
- 4:12Speaker 3: to make sure you're raising good humans.
- 4:14Speaker 2: And and that's.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Been a that's been a thing where I'm kind of like,
- 4:18Speaker 3: all right, you know, and and and a lot of
- 4:20Speaker 3: that just looks like me bringing the kids out. You know,
- 4:24Speaker 3: this year, we're gonna try to have them out on
- 4:26Speaker 3: the road more, you know, so I don't miss out
- 4:29Speaker 3: on those things. And they enjoy being out, you know,
- 4:32Speaker 3: they enjoy going to the shows, and you know, we
- 4:35Speaker 3: are a road family. So my band knows them, like
- 4:38Speaker 3: they're close with all my band and crew guys. Yeah,
- 4:42Speaker 3: so it feels like a mini vacation. But yeah, it's
- 4:46Speaker 3: a it's a that's a fun. That's a balance that
- 4:49Speaker 3: you got to strike when.
- 4:50Speaker 1: I worked in Vegas, and I haven't slowed down a ton,
- 4:53Speaker 1: but when I worked in Vegas, I was a guy
- 4:55Speaker 1: that I respected a ton And as as I think
- 4:58Speaker 1: as a man and as a dad, you get unsolicited
- 5:02Speaker 1: advice all the time. Yeah, rarely sticks for me. I
- 5:05Speaker 1: don't know if you feel the same, but it's like
- 5:06Speaker 1: everybody's got the answer. But he said something that like
- 5:10Speaker 1: really resonated with me, and that is, at some point,
- 5:13Speaker 1: what you sacrifice for is what you're sacrificing, Right, So
- 5:18Speaker 1: if you're like trying to make money, trying to do
- 5:21Speaker 1: at some point it's like you're it's almost the opposite effect.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's a u and.
- 5:26Speaker 3: You know, I mean it's I've talked with artists and
- 5:30Speaker 3: people that I kind of mentor me on that end
- 5:34Speaker 3: of it where it is kind of that.
- 5:36Speaker 2: It's just it's the balance.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Is the hardest thing because man, we are like we're
- 5:42Speaker 3: living a dream right now, Like we work in music,
- 5:44Speaker 3: it's like the thing that everybody wants to come and do,
- 5:46Speaker 3: and then when you finally land it, you're kind of like, well, dude,
- 5:50Speaker 3: why would I not give everything I have to do this?
- 5:53Speaker 3: This is a dream job. So you kind of got
- 5:56Speaker 3: a snap out of that and be like, okay, yeah,
- 5:59Speaker 3: dreams job, but like here's my here's number one that
- 6:04Speaker 3: I needed to take care of. And but I'm getting
- 6:07Speaker 3: better at that. I am getting better at it.
- 6:08Speaker 1: You were talking about things are slower than normal right
- 6:12Speaker 1: now for you? Do you need that to reset? And
- 6:15Speaker 1: I'm gonna say that because regardless of what job you have,
- 6:19Speaker 1: and this is this can be such a tricky thing
- 6:21Speaker 1: for you to say because you have so many fans
- 6:23Speaker 1: and they're like, oh, how lucky is he? How like
- 6:26Speaker 1: everybody's job at some point feels like a job and
- 6:29Speaker 1: you feel burnt out and you lose motivation. I feel
- 6:32Speaker 1: that way. Tas that way almost every day, and so
- 6:36Speaker 1: we She's like, I love how that.
- 6:39Speaker 3: It was met with silence like okay, yeah, go ahead,
- 6:43Speaker 3: go ahead.
- 6:44Speaker 1: But but but it's the same for you. At some
- 6:46Speaker 1: point we're on the damn bus again. Okay, we got
- 6:48Speaker 1: five more sos this week? How do you keep it
- 6:52Speaker 1: so you can when you do hit the stage, when
- 6:55Speaker 1: you do get in the studio, it's not like God,
- 6:58Speaker 1: I just got to get this over with.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Well, I mean, I think the good thing now is
- 7:02Speaker 3: like I have never felt that going into a show now.
- 7:06Speaker 3: The other twenty two and a half hours, you know,
- 7:10Speaker 3: twenty three and a half hours that you're waiting for
- 7:13Speaker 3: that to happen, those can get grindy where you're kind
- 7:18Speaker 3: of like, all right, I'm missing out on this stuff,
- 7:19Speaker 3: and then you're like, all right, hey, we're five minutes out.
- 7:22Speaker 3: That will always be to me the mecha of touring,
- 7:27Speaker 3: and I will never not have fun going out there
- 7:31Speaker 3: and performing and playing the show, because the second I
- 7:33Speaker 3: stop having fun, then what am I doing. I still
- 7:37Speaker 3: feel the same way in the writing room. It still
- 7:39Speaker 3: fires me up to wake up every morning and go
- 7:41Speaker 3: try to create something and try to write the best
- 7:45Speaker 3: song you've ever written. But in order to do that,
- 7:48Speaker 3: I do have to carve out the time to be
- 7:51Speaker 3: creative and think and you know, come up with ideas
- 7:55Speaker 3: for songs. You know, just be alone and and think
- 8:01Speaker 3: about what this next project might be, or what this
- 8:05Speaker 3: next song might be.
- 8:06Speaker 2: About h So that is where.
- 8:11Speaker 3: I wish I had a little bit more time of
- 8:12Speaker 3: that to kind of sneak away and and luckily, you know,
- 8:15Speaker 3: we you know, can I can get away and go
- 8:20Speaker 3: out in the woods and hang out for a little
- 8:22Speaker 3: bit by myself and and kind of feed that creative vein.
- 8:25Speaker 3: But yeah, it's just a it's just a battle of
- 8:29Speaker 3: finding that time between family and work.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Uh, something that I I don't. I don't throw hold
- 8:38Speaker 1: things over people's head very often.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Oh gosh, I'm getting beat up today.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Don't. And I knew she'd make a face of spy.
- 8:46Speaker 1: You sat down here just over Oh no, probably a
- 8:49Speaker 1: little under a year ago, and you're like, l S
- 8:51Speaker 1: you win the whole damn thing.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Oh A, boy, was I wrong.
- 8:54Speaker 1: So so I'm hoping that we catch up, you know,
- 8:58Speaker 1: before the end of summer. But in case we don't,
- 9:01Speaker 1: how you know, you you're an elite college football mind.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Or maybe I shouldn't say.
- 9:05Speaker 3: That after that, you know, you know it's not My
- 9:07Speaker 3: answer is not.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Going to change. LSU win the whole damn thing.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Undefeated SEC champions national championship. That's how like, why would
- 9:15Speaker 3: I say anything different?
- 9:16Speaker 1: That's as a fan. Listen, I'm a Timberwolves fan. We're
- 9:19Speaker 1: gonna beat We're gonna beat the Spurs in six.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Games and go on and win it all.
- 9:24Speaker 1: We're going to sweep Okay, see and then it's us
- 9:26Speaker 1: first the Knicks. Don't look at me like that. I'll
- 9:28Speaker 1: save your beer. Dude, don't play me, don't play me.
- 9:33Speaker 1: What do you ever have to sip like a little
- 9:37Speaker 1: realism as a sports fan, because that's hard. It's so hard.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Last year was all right.
- 9:43Speaker 3: So the first game we went to LSU Clemson. You know,
- 9:47Speaker 3: I'm watching the game. We we win on the road
- 9:50Speaker 3: at Clemson, and I was like, oh my god, dude,
- 9:53Speaker 3: we beat club Nick, we beat this Clemson team dabbo
- 9:56Speaker 3: at Clemson at night and I'm just like, dude, this
- 9:59Speaker 3: is We're the best team in the country. This might
- 10:02Speaker 3: be the best college football team that ever existed. You
- 10:05Speaker 3: didn't say this on Pat McAfee show, did you, Because
- 10:07Speaker 3: you did mcafeel.
- 10:08Speaker 2: I probably did.
- 10:09Speaker 3: I probably did, And I was like, I was like, dude,
- 10:12Speaker 3: there's no doubt. Like we went to Clemson, took care
- 10:14Speaker 3: of business, and then you see Clemson the next week,
- 10:16Speaker 3: You're like, oh, that's not a great team. And then
- 10:19Speaker 3: you see us a couple of weeks later, you're like,
- 10:21Speaker 3: that's not a great team. Not that it's not a
- 10:24Speaker 3: great team, but like you know, nuts was hurt, like
- 10:26Speaker 3: we had some injuries. But like this year, you know
- 10:29Speaker 3: there's new blood, Kiffin's there. We're gonna score points. We
- 10:32Speaker 3: got a lot of guys out of the portal.
- 10:36Speaker 2: You know, our.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Quarterback is supposed to be the real deal, and you
- 10:40Speaker 3: know we're gonna have athletes on defense. So there's no
- 10:44Speaker 3: reason for me to not be like, yeah, undefeated national champions.
- 10:46Speaker 3: Let's go until I'm proven wrong. Just like the te Wolves,
- 10:50Speaker 3: You're gonna sweep the thunder and whinever, So we go
- 10:52Speaker 3: running the damn table.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Let's go for where you're at again. I've known you
- 10:56Speaker 1: for a long time and it's been so cool to
- 10:58Speaker 1: watch you and obviously, like any newer artists to now,
- 11:03Speaker 1: you've taken lumps along the way. What has been the
- 11:05Speaker 1: most important lesson that came from a failure? And I
- 11:10Speaker 1: don't mean failure in the definition of like true failing,
- 11:13Speaker 1: but like there are things that you have fallen short
- 11:15Speaker 1: of as an artist that you had goals? Yeah, that's
- 11:18Speaker 1: a lump. What's been the biggest lump that you're like, Damn,
- 11:21Speaker 1: that wasn't that bad And it actually taught me something?
- 11:23Speaker 2: Yeah, you know.
- 11:26Speaker 3: I mean I think there's always, you know, shows that
- 11:29Speaker 3: you look back on being like, you know, you wish
- 11:31Speaker 3: wish this show would have gone a little bit better.
- 11:35Speaker 3: I wish you would have sold a few more tickets,
- 11:38Speaker 3: wish this single would have done a little better than
- 11:41Speaker 3: what it did. And I mean, I think the thing
- 11:45Speaker 3: I've learned is to not base your success on any
- 11:48Speaker 3: of that stuff. So it's like, man, I'm gonna make
- 11:52Speaker 3: the best record I can put the best song out,
- 11:55Speaker 3: and it doesn't matter if there's a thousand people or
- 11:57Speaker 3: ten thousand people out there getting everything I got for
- 12:01Speaker 3: an hour and a half. And I think for a
- 12:04Speaker 3: while I was kind of like, man, you know, rough show,
- 12:08Speaker 3: and maybe not as many people out there as I
- 12:09Speaker 3: want it to be. I would let that kind of
- 12:12Speaker 3: get in my head and do that's just not fair
- 12:14Speaker 3: to the fans that are there. And I've really like
- 12:18Speaker 3: kind of learned, and that's through talking through other artists,
- 12:20Speaker 3: because you know, and then then you're thinking, like, dude,
- 12:22Speaker 3: am I the only person that thinks this way, like
- 12:24Speaker 3: is there only am I the only artist that goes
- 12:26Speaker 3: out there? And you know, wishes we could have sold
- 12:29Speaker 3: a couple more and call to sell out, But then
- 12:32Speaker 3: you're like, wait a second, there's still a lot of
- 12:33Speaker 3: people here that want to hear this music. Uh, And
- 12:36Speaker 3: you realize that, like everybody's kind of like that, and
- 12:40Speaker 3: and that's been something that it's humbling and and it's
- 12:44Speaker 3: taken a lot of pressure off me to just be like, dude,
- 12:47Speaker 3: it doesn't matter who's out there, man, give them, give
- 12:48Speaker 3: them all you got, present the best show you can.
- 12:52Speaker 1: We talked to Thomas right now that long ago, and
- 12:55Speaker 1: he had the nicest things to say about you and
- 12:57Speaker 1: and and your friendship away from even just amuse, what
- 13:00Speaker 1: is that friendship meant to you professionally and personally?
- 13:03Speaker 2: Well, I mean a.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Lot of everything I just said came from you know, Thomas,
- 13:07Speaker 3: and uh, you know it's just a guy that not
- 13:11Speaker 3: only like have I used him a lot in just
- 13:13Speaker 3: the music side of it to be like, hey man,
- 13:15Speaker 3: how did you do this? Like how do you approach this?
- 13:18Speaker 3: And you know, how do you approach making records? How
- 13:21Speaker 3: do you do all that? And he helps a ton
- 13:23Speaker 3: on that. But man, seriously, from the from a personal side,
- 13:26Speaker 3: to just be able to have somebody to bounce bounce
- 13:31Speaker 3: stuff off, to be like, hey, man, am I being
- 13:33Speaker 3: crazy here? Like is this like something like how do
- 13:36Speaker 3: you know? Should I think this way? And he knows
- 13:39Speaker 3: my wife and and there can be some personal things
- 13:42Speaker 3: where he can be like and I love the dude
- 13:45Speaker 3: to death enough for him to be like, yeah, dude,
- 13:46Speaker 3: you're wrong there, Like you're you're approaching that wrong. You
- 13:50Speaker 3: shouldn't have done that, like uh. And to have somebody
- 13:53Speaker 3: that you look up to, like I look up to
- 13:55Speaker 3: Thomas that there will kind of call me out when
- 13:58Speaker 3: I'm kind of getting in my own way, man, it
- 14:01Speaker 3: means a lot.
- 14:01Speaker 1: That's so cool, man, you're on the verge of doing
- 14:04Speaker 1: it again. Number one songs, where do they?
- 14:07Speaker 2: Day one?
- 14:08Speaker 1: When we met you, a number one song would have
- 14:09Speaker 1: been your whole world. That's all where you sit now
- 14:13Speaker 1: knowing that they're nice, right, but they don't fulfill you.
- 14:18Speaker 1: They don't validate the fact that you are supposed to you.
- 14:21Speaker 1: You are where you're supposed to be. So now that
- 14:23Speaker 1: you look at that from a little bit different of
- 14:25Speaker 1: a lens than five plus years ago, what does number
- 14:28Speaker 1: one mean to you?
- 14:29Speaker 3: I mean it still means, you know, for me, I
- 14:32Speaker 3: think you know number ones as from a songwriter, man,
- 14:38Speaker 3: their world changing, so like I don't think of that
- 14:40Speaker 3: just from myself anymore. And I think one of the
- 14:43Speaker 3: coolest things that changed that was my last two number
- 14:48Speaker 3: ones that were both outside songs. I had nothing to
- 14:50Speaker 3: do in the writing process of them, and both of
- 14:53Speaker 3: those songs were one of the writer's first number ones.
- 14:57Speaker 3: And to be able to make that phone call to
- 15:00Speaker 3: kind of relive that first that singles you up. For me, man,
- 15:07Speaker 3: that has just been one of the coolest things I've
- 15:11Speaker 3: been able to do. And you know, music's tough, man,
- 15:14Speaker 3: And I still like, they still do mean a lot
- 15:16Speaker 3: to me. And I think it's because when I first
- 15:20Speaker 3: moved to town, I was a songwriter and I knew
- 15:22Speaker 3: that's that's all I wanted, and I just wanted one
- 15:25Speaker 3: because I thought if I had to think anything past that,
- 15:27Speaker 3: I'm just kind of being a jerk. So they really
- 15:31Speaker 3: are something that.
- 15:32Speaker 2: I mean.
- 15:32Speaker 3: I'm a country radio kid man, I grew up on it.
- 15:35Speaker 3: My dad loved it, my uncle made a living off
- 15:37Speaker 3: of it. And there's still just as special today as
- 15:42Speaker 3: they were in twenty eighteen whenever we got singles you
- 15:45Speaker 3: up there, So it still doesn't mean a lot to me.
- 15:48Speaker 2: And I'm gonna rap.
- 15:49Speaker 1: I want to ask one more thing though. You brought
- 15:51Speaker 1: up country radio.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Country radio is such a unique.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Space because there's playlists all over the place, there's streaming,
- 15:57Speaker 1: there's watching the videos online and whatnot. But there's something
- 16:01Speaker 1: special about the relationship between an artist and their song
- 16:04Speaker 1: and it getting discovered on country radio. What is that
- 16:07Speaker 1: relationship and how powerful is that for you still to
- 16:09Speaker 1: this day?
- 16:10Speaker 3: Well, I mean, I still think it goes beyond even
- 16:12Speaker 3: the music side of it. And like the first time
- 16:14Speaker 3: we met it was twenty sixteen and here we are
- 16:18Speaker 3: ten years later and we're still a still getting to
- 16:21Speaker 3: be able to say our job is in music. But
- 16:26Speaker 3: for me, that was how I found music. You had
- 16:30Speaker 3: to hear it on the radio. So when it came
- 16:32Speaker 3: on the radio, everybody rushed to it, and it's like, hey,
- 16:34Speaker 3: here's that dude, here's that George Strait song. I don't
- 16:37Speaker 3: think that'll ever I'll never lose that.
- 16:41Speaker 2: But also too, like.
- 16:44Speaker 3: Yourself, my team, so many other people in country radio,
- 16:48Speaker 3: that it wasn't you had to believe in me, Like
- 16:52Speaker 3: you know, some of those early songs were like, man,
- 16:54Speaker 3: there's a lot of great songs out why would we
- 16:56Speaker 3: give this new kid a shot?
- 17:00Speaker 2: You guys did.
- 17:00Speaker 3: And I think that's something that I'll never I never
- 17:03Speaker 3: take that for granted. And and I'm I'm always grateful
- 17:05Speaker 3: for the for guys like you that that gave me
- 17:08Speaker 3: those early chances. And and it still means a lot
- 17:11Speaker 3: to see my name on those on those radio charts.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Dude, massive congrats.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Thanks brother, You're the man. Dude, thank you for loving
- 17:19Speaker 2: the song.
