- 0:00SPEAKER_00: You, the adventurer! Yes, you.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Do you desire knowledge of immense worlds and arcane power?
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: A codex of untold stories and law, or perhaps simply easy listening for your daily commute, and feature eyes, or more accurately, yes, upon dungeon media.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: It's about to get nerdy in here.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: And I'm Travis Peasley.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: It's insert on the episode! Insert party noises here.
- 0:56SPEAKER_02: Those uh yeah, those are what those are called.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: Don't bring um air horns to a party.
- 1:03SPEAKER_02: That might not be the nicest thing to do.
- 1:05SPEAKER_03: It depends on what kind of party it is and where it's at.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: But maybe not.
- 1:09SPEAKER_02: Maybe not in our like small room that we record.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: That we record what's supposed to be listenable audio in.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:16SPEAKER_02: Maybe not.
- 1:17SPEAKER_03: Probably not.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: Probably not.
- 1:18SPEAKER_03: Um we didn't think ahead of time and enough time to do something special in terms of research, but I mean it is our hundredth research.
- 1:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I did, I did like think about that briefly before I started doing the research for this.
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: I was like, oh, it's our hundredth episode.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: I was like, I should find some way to like integrate that or whatever.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: And I was like, well, my I don't know why this is where my brain went.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: My initial uh thought was to look at um Dragon Magazine issue like 100.
- 1:47SPEAKER_02: I just hope that it had like an interesting ecological something in it.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: Like an interesting ecology article, and then I could be like, for our 100th episode, we were Dragon Magazine 100.
- 1:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: Oh that would have been nice.
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but I I don't think that panned out.
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: And then when I was like 75% done with these notes, I like remembered that this is our 100th episode, and that for like a minute or two there I wanted to do something like special, and I was like, well, like that sucks.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that sucks.
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: Um anyways, right?
- 2:21SPEAKER_02: Oh, anyways, here's what we're doing.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: Here's here's the same shit we've been doing for a hundred episodes.
- 2:29SPEAKER_02: I mean, what more would you expect?
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: Or I guess 99 at this point.
- 2:33SPEAKER_02: This is the 100th.
- 2:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this is the 100th instance of bullshit.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: This shit, yeah.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: So today we're talking about Triton.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: Triton.
- 2:44SPEAKER_02: This is partially inspired by kind of like a twofold.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: Lately I've been kind of feeling like um talking about one of the like well, like one of those um like races of characters that sometimes like that show up as player characters, usually in like supplemental materials like um Yuanti or Tabaxi.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: Um that sort of thing.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: I'm speaking of Tabaxi.
- 3:12SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, they're here.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: One of the one of the cats is trying to claw its way under the door.
- 3:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they're very excited.
- 3:19SPEAKER_04: How dare you leave us out at the 100th episode celebration?
- 3:23SPEAKER_02: So sorry.
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: You'll you'll be fine.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: They'll live.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: Um, but I was kind of wanting to do one of those like tangential um player character races, for lack of a better way to describe it.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: And this is also partially inspired by our last session of DD that is DM'd by our friend and social media manager CJ.
- 3:41SPEAKER_02: Hi, CJ.
- 3:42SPEAKER_03: Hi, CJ.
- 3:43SPEAKER_03: Oh, this is for you.
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this is my way of like coping with that.
- 3:47SPEAKER_02: Um, which to be fair, the Tritons in that episode, like episode uh session didn't really end up coming into play that much, but like they were there.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: But I was like, okay, like sort of secondary player character races, um the ocean, because I was the that that um episode that session made me feel kind of ocean-y in general, right?
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: I was looking for some some maritime fun.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: It was a very oceany session session, and so I was like, oh, tritons.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: And thus I did this instead of trying to find some way to incorporate the number 100 into it.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: But here we are.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: That's fine.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: So Tritons.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: Tritons.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: So a little bit of background.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: As I'm sure a lot of you have probably heard of, uh, Tritons are named for and based on the Greek mythological figure Triton, who was the son of Poseidon and Amphitrite.
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: Um making Hercules and Ariel cousins.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 4:57SPEAKER_02: He was depicted most often as a sort of like traditional-looking merman, you know?
- 5:04SPEAKER_02: Like the top half is a human, and then the bottom half is like that classic like mermaid fishtail tail scales.
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:14SPEAKER_04: Fishy tail scales.
- 5:15SPEAKER_04: Fishy tail scales.
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: Nope.
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: I already know it's not gonna work.
- 5:21SPEAKER_02: Um, and also later the word triton became kind of a disambiguation for mermen in the Greek and Roman eras.
- 5:31SPEAKER_02: So you had like Triton, the god, and then Tritons.
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: Tritons being mer like mer people.
- 5:39SPEAKER_02: Um, well, particularly, I think usually referred to mermen specifically.
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: Um, but you know.
- 5:45SPEAKER_02: Um, and the mythological figure uh ty I'm gonna say Titan like 10 times.
- 5:50SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry.
- 5:51SPEAKER_02: That's a different thing.
- 5:52SPEAKER_02: That's that's something else.
- 5:53SPEAKER_02: That's a whole different thing.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: This is something very different.
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: That they are conveniently often very close to each other in monster manuals.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: Um so the Greek god Triton is often portrayed with a conch shell that he uses like a horn, um, as well as a trident, sometimes.
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: And in a lot of interpretations, acts as kind of like a messenger or herald for his father Poseidon.
- 6:19SPEAKER_02: That tracks.
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:21SPEAKER_02: So that's um, that's kind of the vibe we're we're working with here.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: So Tridents first appeared in the supplement Greyhawk, which was published in 1975, and I'm this is another one of those where like their their little thing was just like like five or six lines.
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: Their little thing was five or six lines.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: Oh their little mermaid thing.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: Little God.
- 6:49SPEAKER_02: Oh disappointingly, we're actually not gonna be talking about their little mermaid things really in this episode because nobody nobody deigned to tell me how Tritons reproduce.
- 7:01SPEAKER_02: So I guess I'll just go fuck myself then.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: That's lame.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: I I wanted to kind of interested to see.
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: I wanted some of those beer-battered fish sticks, you know?
- 7:11SPEAKER_02: Jesus Christ.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: Damn, what the fuck?
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: You were the you, I mean, you guys opened that door by saying they're Yeah, I didn't call them beer-battered fish sticks.
- 7:21SPEAKER_02: Well, I'm just saying, you opened the door.
- 7:23SPEAKER_02: I just walked through it.
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: Um so Tritons were similar to merman in appearance.
- 7:30SPEAKER_02: Yes, they usually existed alongside merman, which was kind of confusing.
- 7:35SPEAKER_02: Um, but are more powerful in all ways.
- 7:39SPEAKER_03: Oh god.
- 7:41SPEAKER_03: I'm better than you in every single conceivable way.
- 7:45SPEAKER_02: It reminds me of like from the Sahuagan episode where it's like, they're like Sahuagan are just factually better than people.
- 7:53SPEAKER_02: They're just also they're just also evil.
- 7:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:57SPEAKER_02: Um, so they range from five to seven hit dice, and they can use spells in a manner that is like commensurate with their hit dice.
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: So basically, like at this level you have this many or at this level of hit dice, you have this many spells, blah blah blah blah blah.
- 8:15SPEAKER_02: Um, they can move uh 15 feet per turn and also like turn around in open water, which is a little bit more difficult to do when you're not a native water creature.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: Um, but they do not venture on land.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: Um when mounted on giant seahorses, their movement speed increases to 24.
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: Well, well, no, this is the um my bad, I said feet.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: Um, I'm pretty sure that it's that thing where they have the inch marker, you know, that I'm pretty sure is meant to be a substitute for like squares.
- 8:53SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 8:53SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's right.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: I think because I feel like you would move more than 24 inches in any given round on a seahorse just from the size of the seahorse.
- 9:05SPEAKER_02: Uh this particular seahorse.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: Well, this particular type of seahorse, yes.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: Um, they have very high magical resistance at 90%, which persists through um like a lot of iterations of them.
- 9:20SPEAKER_02: They're very, very strong against magic.
- 9:23SPEAKER_02: And um, yeah, that was basically it.
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: They were like, yeah, there's these guys, they look like merman, they and they're better than merman, and they live in the ocean and they ride giant sea horses sometimes.
- 9:34SPEAKER_04: They're like them.
- 9:36SPEAKER_04: Uh yeah.
- 9:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:38SPEAKER_02: Also, to clarify what um the appearance of merman that they're referring to is, I realized this later on in one of the books where they actually had art of them, but I forgot to go back and note this in Greyhawk.
- 9:51SPEAKER_02: Um, but it's not like the the, you know, the man, and then at the waist, he has a fishtail.
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: It's a man, and then at the waist, he has two fishtails that look like legs.
- 10:05SPEAKER_03: Oh, so like the Starbucks uh mermaid.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like the Starbucks mermaid.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: Have you not seen the full like the full No, I have.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: I just kind of forgot temporarily that the Starbucks thing was a mermaid.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: So you know, that is kind of weird, actually.
- 10:24SPEAKER_02: Why is that?
- 10:24SPEAKER_02: Seattle.
- 10:26SPEAKER_02: Oh, I guess.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: Because I don't I I mean, I guess, but I don't typically associate mermaids and coffee.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: I mean, maybe I should.
- 10:34SPEAKER_03: Maybe you should.
- 10:35SPEAKER_03: Maybe mermaids are the reason we have coffee.
- 10:38unknown: Huh.
- 10:38SPEAKER_03: Actually, no, I'm pretty sure it's because we saw some animal getting crazy on some coffee beans.
- 10:43SPEAKER_03: So, like, I want to do that.
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: Oh, right.
- 10:45SPEAKER_02: That that that thing that like um some plants developed as like a defense mechanism against being eaten.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: We're like, that's lit.
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: Give me all of that.
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: We saw an animal have a heart attack uh after eating some coffee beans, and we're like, I want to try that.
- 11:01SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: That looks like fun.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: Can we do that?
- 11:03SPEAKER_03: And then we didn't have a heart attack, we just got really fast.
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:07SPEAKER_02: But then eventually it's a little bit better, really.
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, it's I mean, and it's fine.
- 11:13SPEAKER_03: It truly is like the better outcome.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: Now I'm just imagining like a mermaid swimming in like a tank full of coffee, and that mermaid is me.
- 11:21SPEAKER_03: And that mermaid is me.
- 11:23SPEAKER_02: But yeah, also like, okay, yes, it's funny because it's the Starbucks mermaid, but also like some of the art of them with their weird tail leggies is like Ugh.
- 11:34SPEAKER_02: I don't like it.
- 11:35SPEAKER_02: It's not good.
- 11:36SPEAKER_02: It's not good because it's it at this stage at least, it's not like the it's not like you something to see with like like the Sakwagan or the Malenti um or the Sea Elves or something like that, where it's like they have like like kind of more like webbed feet, you know what I mean?
- 11:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, almost like like scaly, um, kind of like froggy in like shape.
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: It's just literally like two straight-up mermaid tails.
- 12:04SPEAKER_02: So it it looks it looks weird.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: I don't it looks like the Starbucks thing.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: It looks like the Starbucks thing, except it's also like actually swimming about.
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: And okay, well that yeah, I guess I can see how that's and and not trying to sell you a beverage.
- 12:21SPEAKER_03: So are you saying that if these Titans were trying to sell you a beverage, you would feel better about it?
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: Um, maybe.
- 12:30SPEAKER_02: So um they also appear in the supplement Eldritch Wizardry, which is really hard to say, which was published in 1976.
- 12:38SPEAKER_02: Um, and this basically, like this mostly focuses on um psionics for in um like like four tritons basically.
- 12:49SPEAKER_02: So the way they explained it is that one in ten uh titans, fuck, tritons have the potential to develop psionic powers, but in any given group of 100 Tritons, one of them is guaranteed to have psionic abilities.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: So it's like one in ten can, but like one in one hundred is guaranteed to absolutely gonna have psionic powers.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: Which these things with psionic powers is frightening.
- 13:19SPEAKER_02: It's fine, don't worry about it.
- 13:20SPEAKER_02: They're they're good aligned through most of their through their iterations or fine.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: And also they're in the ocean, so you're not gonna go there.
- 13:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so you're fine.
- 13:31SPEAKER_02: You're right.
- 13:32SPEAKER_02: Um, they had powers of the magic user psionicist type, which included some um abilities more or less specific to the magic user type, such as teleportation, molecular agitation, and etherealness.
- 13:46SPEAKER_02: Molecular agitation.
- 13:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 13:48SPEAKER_02: That's fun.
- 13:49SPEAKER_02: Because the way it was organized, I guess, in Eldritch Wizardry, which maybe one of these days I'll do an episode about Psionics when I've decided that I really hate myself.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: Um, I mean, it's very interesting, but there's just a lot.
- 14:02SPEAKER_02: There is.
- 14:03SPEAKER_02: There, like, they were talking about like attack mode and defense mode, and I was like getting Yu-Gi-Oh! flashbacks from reading this book.
- 14:10SPEAKER_02: But they had it basically separated into like you had cleric type psionicists, magic user type psionists, uh, fighter type psionicists, and then there was one more.
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: Anyway, but it was basically like of the kind of like um like ODD type um classes, there were different types of psionicists that had access to some different abilities.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: They had a lot of overlap, but right.
- 14:43SPEAKER_02: So, um, moving into Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, they actually get a lot of expansion, as many creatures do from Greyhawk to Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, in the monster manual, which was published in 1977.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: Um, they are considered median creatures with a neutral, good alignment and an intelligence of high and up.
- 15:02SPEAKER_02: So they're very smart.
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: Um, Tritons have silvery skin, which fades into silvery blue-colored scales on their lower limbs, those freaky two mermaid tails, that kind of look like legs, but also not enough.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: Two mermaid tails.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it it hits that uncanny valley of like it's not quite fishy enough, but also not quite humanoid enough.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:29SPEAKER_02: It's like you took the worst two aspects of both and put them together.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: Like, why would you do this?
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: Why why you do this?
- 15:36SPEAKER_02: Um, their hair is deep blue or blue-green.
- 15:39SPEAKER_02: Trucks.
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: Um, Titans have.
- 15:43SPEAKER_02: I swear to god.
- 15:45SPEAKER_02: Alright, let's just get a Titan counter going.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: Please do not take a shot.
- 15:50SPEAKER_02: Every time I accidentally say Titan, you will die.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: You will you will be drinking like a Triton because they live in the ocean.
- 15:59SPEAKER_02: Uh Tritons have their own language and can also speak the language of sea elves and that of the Lokata.
- 16:06SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 16:07SPEAKER_05: Locatha.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: So Tritons are rumored to be creatures from the elemental plane of water that have been planted on the material plane for some purpose that is currently unknown to uh surface dwellers.
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: Which um, I gotta say, that phrasing, I don't like it.
- 16:25SPEAKER_02: I don't either.
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: And wouldn't you know that they never expand on that idea further?
- 16:31SPEAKER_02: Of course not of them being planted for some unknown reason.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: Of course not, right?
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: Well, that's terrifying.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: They were, let's just go with they were put there to stop the stupid humanoids from destroying the ocean.
- 16:45SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: I I think we need that.
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 16:49SPEAKER_02: Which I mean, like they are they are like good aligns, so that's that's chill.
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: But it's kind of like who you know.
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: Who and why?
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like who and why, and do they have good intentions?
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: Uh um, so uh Tritons typically live in warmer waters, but are able to live at shallow or deeper um depths.
- 17:14SPEAKER_02: They seldom venture upon dry land because they're not exactly great at walking, as I'm sure you can imagine.
- 17:23SPEAKER_02: I would have Well, I say walking.
- 17:25SPEAKER_02: They don't really, depending on the uh addition, they don't really walk, they just like literally drag themselves.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: Which is an interesting visual.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: Oh um, so in Advanced Dungeons of Dragons, Tritons are known to serve the god Triton.
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: Wild.
- 17:42SPEAKER_02: Though little else is known about their purpose on the prime.
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: So from that phrasing, you could assume that maybe Triton put them there.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: But we don't know why.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: But we're still But we're also not sure.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: We still don't know why.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: Or if for sure.
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: So, um, given their good, their goodly nature, um, they frequently find themselves in conflict with the more um evil aligned uh races of the deep, such as the Sakuagan, the Ace of Chittel.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: Uh holy shit, you didn't even stutter with that one.
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: I am so proud of you.
- 18:19SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 18:21SPEAKER_02: But given their more goodly alignment, you can you can kind of imagine.
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: But they are generally well disposed towards humans who do not mean harm to the Triton society.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: So that's pretty cool.
- 18:33SPEAKER_02: You know, if you're on a little party boat for your birthday and you drown, or you're you're starting to drown, like a Triton might save you and take you up to shore and then fall in love with you.
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: And then sacrifice their weird little two fishtails to get actual legs.
- 18:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, to get actual legs.
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: But will they still have their voice?
- 18:52SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, they will because they're um not mermaids.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: So it's like slightly different.
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: And also they know better than to make deals with sea witches.
- 19:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:04SPEAKER_02: They don't ask how they got the legs.
- 19:06SPEAKER_02: Um it is 90% likely that any tritons encountered will be mounted upon hippocampi or giant seahorses.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: Hippocampi?
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: Um, that's those um water horses.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: Well, now I'm just gonna have to go.
- 19:21SPEAKER_02: That are like the front half is like a horse and the back half is a mermaid tail.
- 19:25SPEAKER_02: Um, like kelpies.
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: I think kelpies are kelpies are in hippocampai or at least like similar, I think.
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: Oh those guys, yeah.
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: Something that is basically like a literal seahorse?
- 19:38SPEAKER_02: Seahorse.
- 19:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:40SPEAKER_02: So they have seahorses, and then they have seahorses.
- 19:45SPEAKER_02: And honestly, like if I were a triton and it was like, all right, you're of age now to go like be trity, go do tritony things.
- 19:55SPEAKER_02: Um, you can pick your mount.
- 19:57SPEAKER_02: Do you want a seahorse or a hippocampie?
- 20:00SPEAKER_02: I would be like, I don't know.
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: I would absolutely take the hippocampie.
- 20:05SPEAKER_02: But like giant seahorse.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry, hippocampus, I guess.
- 20:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it would be a hippocampus for a singular.
- 20:11SPEAKER_02: But like, that fucks.
- 20:12SPEAKER_02: That fucks so hard.
- 20:13SPEAKER_02: I want like a giant leafy sea dragon.
- 20:15SPEAKER_02: I love those guys.
- 20:17SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah, that that's that that's chill.
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: That's super chill.
- 20:22SPEAKER_02: But unfortunately for me, I probably wouldn't go off and do tritony things because uh only male Tritons engage in combat as a general rule.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: But I mean, I guess I could go do other things.
- 20:34SPEAKER_02: Like hunt for pearls.
- 20:37SPEAKER_02: Destroy the patriarchy.
- 20:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like destroy the underwater patriarchy.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: Or like, you know, hunt for pearls.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: Or just like go swim around a coral reef and just like look at everything.
- 20:48SPEAKER_02: That'd be pretty dope.
- 20:49SPEAKER_02: Um, Triton leaders bear concha horns, uh, which calm rough waters when blown a special way.
- 20:57SPEAKER_02: That's what she said.
- 20:59SPEAKER_02: Um, they are also typically used as signal devices.
- 21:03SPEAKER_02: Um, these horns can summon um 5 to 20 hippocampai, 5 to 30 giant seahorses, or 1 to 10 sea lions.
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: Jesus.
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: They often have sea, like at I don't think I wrote this down.
- 21:17SPEAKER_02: But they often like at any given stronghold or like city of Tritons have like sea lions as pets.
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: Which is like also dope.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: And it makes sense.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: Just god damn sea lions, man.
- 21:31SPEAKER_02: Fucking sea lions.
- 21:32SPEAKER_02: I love those guys.
- 21:33SPEAKER_02: Fucking dog mermaids.
- 21:35SPEAKER_02: Um, so these constable horns also cause marine creatures with animal intelligence or less to flee in panic.
- 21:42SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, which would include, I would imagine, sharks.
- 21:46SPEAKER_02: Um, that sort of thing.
- 21:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: Because sharks are not very smart.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: No, no, they are not.
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: So that's the kind of bulk of them in Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, but there are some fun.
- 22:01SPEAKER_02: Um bits of flavor and things about them from the module The War Wraths of Kron, which was published in 1984.
- 22:10SPEAKER_02: So as we discussed, Tritons resemble um Marrow, which is the like merherson way of saying like mermaid.
- 22:20SPEAKER_02: But can be distinguished by cultural differences such as the way they braid their hair.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: Um also uh Triton were sharks, whose animal forms resemble Mako sharks exist.
- 22:35SPEAKER_04: So that's pretty cool.
- 22:37SPEAKER_04: Uh yeah, I would say that might actually be the coolest.
- 22:41SPEAKER_04: Wear sharks.
- 22:43SPEAKER_04: Wear sharks.
- 22:44SPEAKER_04: Wear sharks.
- 22:47SPEAKER_04: Scary sharks.
- 22:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, not to be confused with were dolphins.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: Remember those?
- 22:53SPEAKER_02: Oh god.
- 22:54SPEAKER_02: Callback.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: Oh god.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: No, I had forgotten.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: You're welcome.
- 22:59SPEAKER_02: Um, a description is also given for a prominent, important Triton city that kind of illuminates um some interesting things about like their culture.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: So the city is called Sethus, and Sethis is like Sus.
- 23:16SPEAKER_02: Sussis.
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: Um but it is a city made entirely from dead coral that is cut from distant coral reefs.
- 23:26SPEAKER_02: Um it's this is I I enjoy this note, which is not expanded on much further in most other um iterations, but I like it.
- 23:36SPEAKER_02: Uh it says, prompted by their love of beauty and music, the Tritons uh made the entire city a natural musical instrument.
- 23:44SPEAKER_02: As water currents flow through the coral foundation of the city, they create a complex rhythm that can be heard up to 12 miles away.
- 23:54SPEAKER_01: Okay, I want I want this.
- 23:56SPEAKER_03: Okay, also I know it's like a foundation of coral, but all my brain is like the coral foundation.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: The coral foundation.
- 24:05SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 24:05SPEAKER_03: It's just the musical instrument.
- 24:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: I want it so bad.
- 24:13SPEAKER_02: Um, a huge building made of different types and colors of coral covers one side of the city.
- 24:19SPEAKER_02: And out of each of the six corners uh rises a tower.
- 24:24SPEAKER_02: And atop these towers are bright lights which illuminate the entire city.
- 24:28SPEAKER_02: And these bright lights are glow worms, giant glow worms.
- 24:33SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 24:34SPEAKER_02: What the f and it says their glow can be seen up to five miles from the city.
- 24:38SPEAKER_02: So the Tritons use this kind of combination of light and sound generated by the city itself to like navigate.
- 24:46SPEAKER_04: That's amazing.
- 24:47SPEAKER_04: Isn't that isn't that so cool?
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: That is.
- 24:51SPEAKER_01: These Tritons are fucking ridiculous.
- 24:53SPEAKER_01: They are like next level.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: They're like extra.
- 24:55SPEAKER_02: Like I love them.
- 24:56SPEAKER_02: Like, hey, yeah, you know, like, yeah, New York City's pretty cool or whatever, but like we got glow worms.
- 25:03SPEAKER_02: We got glow worms and a musical city, and and buildings that sing.
- 25:07SPEAKER_02: Fuck you.
- 25:09SPEAKER_02: So um, Tritons were adapted as a player character option in the supplement The Sea People, which was published in 1990.
- 25:18SPEAKER_02: Which we're not a seeble.
- 25:20SPEAKER_02: See, king of the sea monkeys.
- 25:25SPEAKER_02: Um, which I gotta say, this this book has a lot of very cool stuff.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: And also, additionally, the cover for this book is probably one of my favorite pieces of art from Dungeons and Dragons that I have ever seen.
- 25:40SPEAKER_02: God damn.
- 25:41SPEAKER_02: Um, like literally, it's so cool.
- 25:43SPEAKER_02: And I it's it's really neat because it focuses on play in a mostly underwater setting.
- 25:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 25:51SPEAKER_02: So like it has all the rules about like movement underwater, um movement underwater and other things I can't think of.
- 26:00SPEAKER_02: Movement underwater.
- 26:01SPEAKER_02: Well, that was probably like three chapters worth of information because it's complicated.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: And also probably just like general like fighting underwater because there's a whole lot of life underwater.
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:13SPEAKER_02: But like which is very, very interesting.
- 26:17SPEAKER_01: Um see, I didn't realize that them being adopted and adopted, them being adapted as player characters happened like so early on.
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: I thought that was more of a recent thing.
- 26:30SPEAKER_02: Nope.
- 26:30SPEAKER_02: I that's kind of what I thought too.
- 26:32SPEAKER_02: And I was thinking maybe like it would have happened perhaps in third edition.
- 26:37SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, like 3 or 3.5, but not like Advanced Engines of Dragons.
- 26:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's really early.
- 26:43SPEAKER_02: So unfortunately, I I found their actual like their bit, I guess, um, like their race descriptions as for like your player character choices to be somewhat lacking.
- 26:59SPEAKER_02: There wasn't really anything that I found particularly interesting there.
- 27:04SPEAKER_02: Um, but there was uh some other sections of the book where Triton Society is discussed at large um from the perspective of an in-game source.
- 27:17SPEAKER_02: So it's another one of those like I love that.
- 27:20SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: So um of all of the um different uh groups of like underwater uh people, uh the Tritons are unusual because they maintain a standing army.
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: Um and this kind of comes from their more like settled lifestyle as opposed to um a lot of the other wandering civilizations in this particular setting were more like nomadic.
- 27:52SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 27:53SPEAKER_02: And also in addition to this, a lot of Tritons are involved full-time in things like administration, farming, crafting, yada yada.
- 28:03SPEAKER_02: Um, so it's funny because um the this person said that Tritons uh have a very relaxed attitude about work.
- 28:14SPEAKER_02: So they're just like yeah, like whatever.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, we do this like all day, but it's whatever.
- 28:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like they're they're still kind of like like it it's it's interesting, I think, that that is presented as a contrast for them, that they have like a standing army and this more like settled, um, very regimented lifestyle, but they're also like kind of chill.
- 28:41SPEAKER_02: It kind of to me like almost embodies that like stereotypical like water personality, you know?
- 28:48SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, like they're kind of just like chill, go with the flow, whatever.
- 28:53SPEAKER_01: It's fine.
- 28:55SPEAKER_02: Um it says on the whole, they're a peaceful folk who delight in life.
- 28:59SPEAKER_02: Um, they grow their own food, they herd uh fish for food.
- 29:06SPEAKER_02: Um, and this is so cool.
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: Um, they cultivate like huge forests of kelp.
- 29:13SPEAKER_02: And um that's like a big like part of their like like food source.
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: Like I would imagine that's like that's like rice for them, probably.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: Hope forest.
- 29:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:27SPEAKER_02: So like between that, um, other like small Do you think they make sushi?
- 29:32SPEAKER_02: Probably absolutely.
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: Man, I hope so.
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: They probably have them.
- 29:36SPEAKER_02: They just make a sushi.
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: They just probably have the freshest sushi for sure.
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: They make they just make sushi, but like holds a rice.
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: It's just all seaweed and fish.
- 29:44SPEAKER_04: I mean, there are some sushi rolls that are close, close to that.
- 29:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:49SPEAKER_02: Um, but between that, fish, um, other small crustaceans and things like that, it says they make wonderful food.
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: I fucking bet.
- 29:58SPEAKER_02: Which I would imagine.
- 30:00SPEAKER_04: I I would go to a Triton restaurant for sure.
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: Fucking same.
- 30:03SPEAKER_04: Even if it was underwater?
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: Oh god.
- 30:07SPEAKER_02: It's like that one, that one restaurant in Neopets.
- 30:11SPEAKER_02: Oh, I was the one real?
- 30:14SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 30:15SPEAKER_04: Oh, but yes, the one in Neopets.
- 30:17SPEAKER_02: That's like ludicrously expensive.
- 30:19SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 30:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:20SPEAKER_02: It's like that.
- 30:21SPEAKER_02: You found a paintbrush on the floor that one time.
- 30:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 30:25SPEAKER_02: It's in what what's the what's that zone called?
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: Moraca?
- 30:29SPEAKER_02: Moracua.
- 30:30SPEAKER_02: I think.
- 30:31SPEAKER_03: Only real ones now.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I remember Neo Petra.
- 30:33SPEAKER_01: I have no clue what's the one.
- 30:35SPEAKER_03: Travis's Moraca, yeah.
- 30:37SPEAKER_03: The underwater kingdom.
- 30:39SPEAKER_02: Travis's eyes just like glazed over.
- 30:42SPEAKER_02: Um, so the the fish that they kind of like herd and more or less like breed for food kind of like freely swim around their societies.
- 30:54SPEAKER_02: But trained dogfish, which are a type of shark, are used to prevent them from wandering too far.
- 31:00SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 31:00SPEAKER_02: So like they're like herding animals.
- 31:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:03SPEAKER_02: Basically.
- 31:04SPEAKER_02: But also like you just like go outside and there's like a bunch of like, I don't know, sh uh, sheep, I guess, just like running around.
- 31:13SPEAKER_02: And then, you know, you're like, Well, I was gonna say, oh, I want that one, and you just like pluck it and eat it right there.
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: Probably not with sheep, but I I wouldn't do that with sheep, no.
- 31:24SPEAKER_02: They probably do that with fish, though.
- 31:25SPEAKER_02: Like they just see like a nice one, like nice, plump, juicy looking one swimming around, and they're like, yoink, yoink.
- 31:33SPEAKER_02: Let's go.
- 31:34SPEAKER_02: Uh so tritons tend to live in the more scenic and warmer parts of the sea and avoid the deeper and cooler waters, which I think is a good move.
- 31:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't blame them there.
- 31:43SPEAKER_02: For one in general, but also because it is obviously darker down there.
- 31:48SPEAKER_02: But they have the cool glow worms, and their eyes are not suited to seeing in the like very, very deep parts of the sea.
- 31:56SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: And also the glow worms like live in the towers, so I highly doubt they could just they can like cultivate them.
- 32:03SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 32:04SPEAKER_03: Well, no, I'm I'm saying that they were cultivated to live in the towers.
- 32:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and you know, I was gonna say, like, do you want to take some glow worms and go explore the abysses into the ocean?
- 32:14SPEAKER_02: Because I do.
- 32:16SPEAKER_02: Um, reportedly, Triton can live to be at least 250 years old.
- 32:21SPEAKER_02: Damn.
- 32:21SPEAKER_02: So that's pretty cool.
- 32:23SPEAKER_02: And also, their naming conventions favor Roman-style names, which I really like.
- 32:28SPEAKER_02: That's always the jam.
- 32:30SPEAKER_02: And also, I feel like it's fun because some details um in these like earlier sort of supplements, I think really tie them back well to uh the mythological figure Triton and the use of the word tritons as a disambiguation for mermen, like their names being like Roman style.
- 32:50SPEAKER_02: I I like it.
- 32:53SPEAKER_01: Roman-style fish people names.
- 32:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:57SPEAKER_02: I mean, I mean sounds good to me.
- 32:59SPEAKER_02: You know, the the thing is, like, you said that, and my brain was like, not even just because I like know about Tritons, but I was just like, yeah, that makes sense to me.
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:08SPEAKER_02: That's that's racks, yeah.
- 33:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean Advanced Sudges of Dragons second edition.
- 33:13SPEAKER_02: Tritons are in the Monsters Compendium Volume 2, which was published in 1989.
- 33:18SPEAKER_02: So they weren't there right from the get, but they were like, yeah, we need these fish guys back.
- 33:25SPEAKER_02: Um, and most of the information that's in here, um, a lot of it is the same from Advanced Dungeons and Dragons.
- 33:34SPEAKER_02: Like, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
- 33:36SPEAKER_02: But there are a lot of additional details mostly centering around their behavior towards outsiders.
- 33:42SPEAKER_02: Um, also, their non-fishy features are described as quote, handsomely human.
- 33:47SPEAKER_02: So I feel like that's worth noting.
- 33:49SPEAKER_02: Handsomely human.
- 33:51SPEAKER_02: Is that these fish people are sexy?
- 33:54SPEAKER_02: Naturally.
- 33:55SPEAKER_01: I mean, I had kind of like assumed and like had imagined that already, but I'm glad that they made the that they made it clear that they're handsomely human.
- 34:05SPEAKER_02: Do not forget they are handsome.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: They are handsomely human, except for the lower half.
- 34:10SPEAKER_02: From the yeah, from the waist up.
- 34:13SPEAKER_02: Uh, so a lot of things in DD are like that.
- 34:17SPEAKER_02: Handsomely human from the waist up.
- 34:20SPEAKER_02: Both.
- 34:21SPEAKER_02: Driders in general.
- 34:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:25SPEAKER_02: And then from the waist down, it's like, oh.
- 34:28SPEAKER_02: That's a spider.
- 34:29SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 34:30SPEAKER_01: Ooh.
- 34:30SPEAKER_02: Oh my.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: I changed my mind.
- 34:34SPEAKER_02: So Triton are reclusive and non-violent, and they normally only attack uh interlopers to capture.
- 34:42SPEAKER_02: An exception to this is if a Triton is killed in battle, in which case the fight turns into one of retribution.
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: Um, so just immediate retribution.
- 34:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and if if it doesn't look like that particular conflict is going to go well, uh, the Tritons will withdraw to either gather reinforcements or make some other kind of preparation to uh make retribution, you know, for one of their own kind being killed, you know.
- 35:12SPEAKER_02: So while Tritons maintain their leaning towards a good alignment, um, they are very suspicious of outsiders and have no love for land dwellers in general.
- 35:23SPEAKER_02: Um like I said, they rarely kill unless they're provoked, like I said, in a type of situation where maybe someone kills one of their own or something.
- 35:32SPEAKER_02: Um, but they typically will apprehend people who intrude upon their territory.
- 35:38SPEAKER_02: Um, so trespassers who are found guilty of intentionally entering Triton waters or uh treasure seeking are left, quote, to the fate of the seas.
- 35:47SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 35:48SPEAKER_02: Which is to say they are stripped of all their belongings and set adrift at least 10 miles from any shoreline.
- 35:54SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 35:55SPEAKER_01: So you did.
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so you're gonna drown or get eaten.
- 36:02SPEAKER_02: Honestly, like I would imagine, like, I mean, I'm sure that they have countermeasures, but I would imagine some persons just like they just get dragged to like Triton port and their like water breathing spell like wears off and they just like die halfway through the street.
- 36:18SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 36:19SPEAKER_02: Just drown, and it's like, well, um doesn't matter now, I guess.
- 36:25SPEAKER_02: Um, shark bait.
- 36:28SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 36:30SPEAKER_02: So it says that um trespassers ruled innocent, which I guess they wouldn't really be trespassers at that point.
- 36:35SPEAKER_02: Alleged trespassers ruled uh innocent by the Triton court, awaken the next day on some distant shore.
- 36:43SPEAKER_01: So you still get drugged.
- 36:46SPEAKER_01: But you at least don't get killed.
- 36:48SPEAKER_02: Right, yeah.
- 36:50SPEAKER_02: Which, I mean, also it's this like distant shore.
- 36:53SPEAKER_02: And my interpretation of that is not necessarily like I don't know, the nearest shore to where they found this person.
- 37:00SPEAKER_02: So it's not like you could just be like, huh, that was weird, and just like wander up and get eaten by a fucking bear.
- 37:09SPEAKER_02: So it's like the same result.
- 37:11SPEAKER_02: Well, I mean, I guess that in that case you still have like all your belongings and stuff.
- 37:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like they're not stripping you of all your equipment and whatnot.
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: Right, yeah.
- 37:20SPEAKER_02: But still, like that just that just feels like like a I don't this is just the kind of brain I have and the kind of thoughts that I have.
- 37:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:28SPEAKER_02: And yeah, the kind of thoughts that I have, the things that I think about.
- 37:31SPEAKER_02: That I'm just like imagining like someone waking up on on shore after that.
- 37:36SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't know, they're they're in the ocean looking for some like magical artifact to save their dying mom or something.
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: And they like lock eyes with this handsomely human triton across the courtroom, and like, yeah, anyway.
- 37:50SPEAKER_02: And they like wake up on a distant shore with like massive FOMO, and they're like, and then they meet again later, and it's yeah, yeah.
- 37:57SPEAKER_02: A lot of Triton love stories happening today.
- 38:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no shit.
- 38:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it's just um listen, they're handsome.
- 38:03SPEAKER_02: I can't help it.
- 38:05SPEAKER_02: Fair enough.
- 38:06SPEAKER_02: But anyway, those are the kinds of things I think about.
- 38:08SPEAKER_02: Um, also, despite their goodly nature, Tritons do not aid land dwellers unless their own interests are directly involved in the matter.
- 38:15SPEAKER_02: So they're just kind of like, leave us alone.
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: Please and thank you.
- 38:19SPEAKER_03: Fair enough.
- 38:19SPEAKER_02: Which I mean, like honestly, fair enough.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: Like, who doesn't want to fuck off to the bottom of the well, they don't live on the bottom of the ocean, but who doesn't want to fuck off to the ocean and say leave me alone?
- 38:27SPEAKER_02: Because I know I do.
- 38:29SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's that's fair.
- 38:32SPEAKER_02: So Tritons have no natural enemies except for the giant squid, which is immune to the effects of their conch shells.
- 38:40SPEAKER_02: Which I didn't actually I didn't actually look up if this is because um giant squids have too high of an intelligence to be affected by the um panic effect um caused by their conch shells.
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: Because like I would make the assumption that a squid would have animal intelligence, but I know that like real-world squids are actually pretty smart as far as like animal intelligence goes.
- 39:08SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 39:09SPEAKER_02: Or if it just happens to be incidental, because they're like, we gotta give these guys some kind of natural predator that isn't like the Sawagan.
- 39:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 39:21SPEAKER_02: But anyway, um, that's their only natural enemy, which like fair giant squids are fucking terrifying, but also kind of cool.
- 39:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, their intelligence level is genius plus.
- 39:32SPEAKER_02: What?
- 39:34SPEAKER_01: That's intelligence level, genius plus.
- 39:38SPEAKER_02: That's spoopy.
- 39:39SPEAKER_01: 19 to 20 plus.
- 39:41SPEAKER_02: So they're more so they're more intelligent than tritons, even.
- 39:45SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 39:46SPEAKER_01: That's why they're not affected.
- 39:48SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 39:48SPEAKER_02: Um noted.
- 39:50SPEAKER_02: So their intelligence is definitely higher than animal.
- 39:53SPEAKER_02: Got it.
- 39:54SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 39:56SPEAKER_02: So um, as of this supplement, uh not supplement, rather.
- 40:01SPEAKER_02: So as of this uh entry in Advanced Sudges of the Dragon 2nd edition, uh, normal Triton live for approximately 300 years, whereas their leaders and spellcasters have life expectancies of 500 years or more.
- 40:15SPEAKER_02: Um, something I didn't mention earlier that like it's okay, it's it's relevant because it ties into that, like their leaders and spellcasters having longer life expectancies.
- 40:26SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 40:26SPEAKER_02: Is it's basically one of those situations where it's like every one in 100 Tritons that's born is exceptional and has this many hit dice, and then every one in this many is born, and da-da-da.
- 40:39SPEAKER_02: And it kind of goes up the yeah, like goes up the ladder.
- 40:43SPEAKER_01: As was typical.
- 40:45SPEAKER_02: As yeah, as it likes to do.
- 40:47SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, the one out of every however many Sahuaga and a born with forearms, blah blah blah.
- 40:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, kind of thing.
- 40:53SPEAKER_02: So that's really all, but that's kind of all that is.
- 40:56SPEAKER_02: And then it's really just that these exceptional tritons are more likely to like live longer, rise higher in society, blah, blah, blah.
- 41:04SPEAKER_02: But it's not like a a strict, like you're suddenly a different type of triton.
- 41:10SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 41:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 41:11SPEAKER_02: So that's why it's I mean, it's relevant, but it's also not the most interesting thing in the world.
- 41:15SPEAKER_02: Because I don't want to sit here listing numbers for 5,000 hours and making everybody's heads hurt.
- 41:22SPEAKER_02: Numbers are just Modrins?
- 41:25SPEAKER_04: Um, so you don't want to do the Modrins episode?
- 41:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I don't want to do the Modrins, but under the sea.
- 41:31SPEAKER_02: So Tritons are again presented more detailed in this this time, in my opinion, as a player character race in the Forgotten Realms supplement Sea of Fallen Stars, which was published in 1999.
- 41:43SPEAKER_01: Sea of Fallen Stars.
- 41:45SPEAKER_02: So this focuses on a setting called Saros, which I am like it's not, it's not that it's not pertinent, because I think it's it's pertinent to the module, but it's not necessarily super pertinent to everything I'm going to be talking about here.
- 42:00SPEAKER_02: I just wanted to clarify that that's the name of the setting.
- 42:03SPEAKER_02: Um, because I'm gonna be saying it a few times.
- 42:05SPEAKER_01: Right, and it's better for us to know what the fuck Saros is.
- 42:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but it's also not like, okay, so this is this part of Saros, and this is this part, you know?
- 42:15SPEAKER_02: So the uh Tritons are the most mysterious and distant people of Saros.
- 42:20SPEAKER_02: Uh they are deep-dwelling folk who rarely interact with other races until very recently in campaign time.
- 42:28SPEAKER_02: Which this is already presenting a little bit of a contrast to the whole like Tritons live in shallow water thing.
- 42:35SPEAKER_02: So they are considered among the eldest of the aquatic races in the inner sea, but they are not native to the prime, as was discussed earlier.
- 42:43SPEAKER_02: Um so the Tritons were once the only magic wielding race to stand against the Morkov, who are kind of like the the back, they're the bad guys of the supplement.
- 42:53SPEAKER_02: Um, and they helped many of the other sea people resist the evil races and also learn um magic and fighting uh abilities.
- 43:06SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 43:07SPEAKER_02: So it says, quote, now with the other races becoming their equals in culture, magic, and might, the Tritons' long isolation may soon come to a close, provided, of course, that they can consider their new allies as equals rather than children or pets.
- 43:22SPEAKER_02: End quote.
- 43:22SPEAKER_02: Which is like Okay.
- 43:24SPEAKER_02: That's that's that's given you an attitude, or uh.
- 43:28SPEAKER_02: That's given you an idea of kind of the um attitude we're working with going forward.
- 43:34SPEAKER_01: Beautiful.
- 43:35SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah, that's good.
- 43:36SPEAKER_02: Um the in this uh module they're also referred to by the epithets aloof ones, blues, long manes, and the elders.
- 43:45SPEAKER_02: Which I thought were fun.
- 43:46SPEAKER_02: The elders.
- 43:47SPEAKER_02: Which I thought were fun.
- 43:48SPEAKER_01: I do like the elders.
- 43:50SPEAKER_02: So they're um well they're I think they're I think actually their coloration had kind of shifted a little bit in Advanced Dungeons and Dragons in the Monster Manual that I.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: forgot to mention um but as of this uh most tritons appear with deep blue skin but sometimes very young with skin color uh with a skin color closer to a light green or like a pearl which I think is fun good ocean colors very good 10 out of 10 ocean wood ocean um all other characteristics are uh I don't know where that came from um however the um albino or mutant triton is socially outcast so what also there was like no expansion on what that means because albino obviously I mean obviously yeah albino but what is a mutant triton I don't know I mean albino and it also doesn't expand on what they mean by socially outcast like do they throw them out to the sharks or do people just look at you funny like what's going on right like is it the outcast of people just don't really talk to you or do they just kick you out or do they literally physically kick you out like you're your little triton baby you think you have a little pearly and then they open their eyes and they're bright red and you're like oh gotta go feed them to the sharks like the Sahu I can do.
- 45:17SPEAKER_02: Oof oof but anyway so anyway I mean that's still not great on a lighter note they kind of are they are starting to look more kind of well I say more humanoid.
- 45:36SPEAKER_02: Their feet are more normal.
- 45:37SPEAKER_02: Their feet are more normal um so they their hands are their hands are webbed and they have kind of like we're starting to abandon that fishtail thing a little bit and they're start they're starting to look a little bit more like kind of humanoid in structure legs you know um so they have like webbed feet and their calves are bisected by these little dorsal fins that run from the mid-calf and taper off at the ankles.
- 46:07SPEAKER_02: So they've got little fins on the back of their legs.
- 46:10SPEAKER_02: And they're starting to look more normal.
- 46:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah so instead of having the weird ass two fishtails two fishtail fucking noodle they have situation humanoid legs but they're still built for swimming swimming.
- 46:23SPEAKER_02: Which I guess makes a it it makes me more comfortable.
- 46:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah it makes me a little bit more comfortable but I don't know still yeah so tritons wear their hair which is usually a dark blue or dark green color in long manes.
- 46:38SPEAKER_02: It says that uh men commonly cut their hair about five inches past shoulder length which is still pretty long for a lot of a lot of dudes.
- 46:46SPEAKER_02: I want to say that's longer than my hair anyway or about as long and braid it to keep the hair out of their faces.
- 46:54SPEAKER_02: Triton women often wear their hair as long and free as they desire though they too might braid back some or all of their hair when expedient also the growth pattern of their hair makes it look like they like shave a portion of it but in reality they just don't grow hair about like two inches back from their ears which are pointed.
- 47:18SPEAKER_02: So they kind of have that like okay um I'm trying to I'm trying to think of a word like not not like receding hairline.
- 47:29SPEAKER_01: I'm trying to think of like a specific so the only thing that I can picture in my head are the uh female monks from Avatar the Last Airbender.
- 47:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah yeah yeah yeah how they go I I know exactly what you're talking about front portion with like no hair like shaved to show tattoos so you can yeah so you can see it's kind of like that except that's how their hair naturally grows like that.
- 47:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 47:53SPEAKER_02: Ooh yeah weird they also um weave in pieces of metal or coral in their braids to use as bludgeoning weapons in emergencies.
- 48:05SPEAKER_02: Oh my so do you ever just like or like I'm imagining like like those hair pins that have like knives hidden in them they just pull out this fucking like conch shell just to beat you to start beating a bitch with me me um also um if seen anywhere closer than uh oh so depending on the depth and the lighting that they are at um uh like so in a brighter um part of the ocean a Triton's eyes look normal and their irises are usually uh green and blue hues as I'm sure you can imagine.
- 48:48SPEAKER_02: Um however if they are in dim lighting such as in the depths of the ocean which at a certain point isn't really dim, it's just dark, but you know um the peoples of Triton eyes expand tremendously to help them see and uh often turns literally their entire eye black.
- 49:06SPEAKER_02: Oh whoa yeah um they also have a nissitating membrane that protects the eye from sudden flashes of light uh and this reflex allows normal vision at depths of up to 1000 feet below the surface of the ocean so they've got like normal looking eyes up to a certain point but then when they get down deep enough they just have like these solid black their eyes just that's crazy dilate to to like massive yeah to like massive extremes which again this also presents a contrast from them typically it which you know I just I say like contrast is in like I think that it was like a perfect a purposeful change as opposed to like an error but this provides a contrast to them staying in like warmer shallower parts of the ocean so this is when they start kind of migrating downwards if you will right they start to become more yeah um deep sea yeah as opposed to creatures yeah um interestingly the average Titan falls between four foot eight and five foot four so Travis and I are too tall to be tritons but Taylor you're perfect you're you're honestly pretty tall for a Triton you're the perfect triton size can I be a Titan so that a Titan well I mean I would be really short for a Titan.
- 50:32SPEAKER_04: Right but you would be tall for a Triton say that four times fast so I will um I will pick the Triton and I will try conversion right now.
- 50:42SPEAKER_02: For once in your life shut the fuck up damn I'm sorry damn um oh fucking brutal brutal is what it is so in this setting um being that Tritons are kind of the elder race of the Allied sea peoples um tritons have many biases and preconceptions about those around them.
- 51:07SPEAKER_02: They have come to expect that all races that are not their enemies should treat them with some awe or at least respect.
- 51:15SPEAKER_02: If they do not get that respect their immediate response is either complete indifference or anger so um however the problem with their uh some of their recent successes being due only to alliances with other races many no longer see them with the same eyes and this is galling too many a Triton.
- 51:35SPEAKER_02: So it's kind of like that like early Mass Effect era where they're kind of like having to contend with the fact that they might like the council races are having to contend with the fact that they might actually have to start respecting humans a little bit.
- 51:50SPEAKER_02: That's like that's the Tritons right now and they're like they're like literally clutching their pearls.
- 51:55SPEAKER_02: They are just so appalled they're appalled uh they still have their typical um creature allies in sea lions and hippocampi which again um but they are nervous around the prankish and happy dolphins of the shallow sea and they resent the fact that dolphins quote interrupt their currents which is the undersea expression for getting in their personal space with impunity hey bro hey bro I'm gonna need you to stop interrupting my currents please back please back up six feet thank you you just like look out and you see a train arguing with a dolphin yeah and this is the the dolphins like they kind of try to like mess with them and like kind of break through their stoic exterior but will often leave the interaction after not too long if they sense like no no intention of the train to like play with them.
- 52:52SPEAKER_02: Like they're like eh I'm bored I'm gonna go talk to somebody else I'm gonna I'm gonna go over here you're you kind of suck.
- 52:59SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 53:00SPEAKER_02: Wow so uh Tritons operate under a patriarchal patriarchal feudal that's how also I feel about that in general uh feudal system of nobles uh inherited titles all that kind of fancy smancy shit yeah um it says there's little evidence of the inner workings or titles within the nobility or military as Tritons do not regularly share such information with outsiders and it kind of then immediately went into the inner workings of that um but basically more or less um like Triton society is organized basically like it it expands out from a central point into different communities called protectorates and basically protectorates are ruled by a priest and a military or governmental leader who share equal power in decision making right and in this instance um Tritons worshipped the god Persona who was one that I had never heard of before Persona and similarly to the aches of the chitol the Titans were Tritons were more or less a theocratic society because again I mentioned how um the priests share political power with a military leader.
- 54:26SPEAKER_02: And so basically this means that pretty much anything high up in Triton society is going to have ties to the Church of Persana.
- 54:34SPEAKER_02: All most non-Tritons can glean about Persana's faith is the devotion to construction and guardianship and this is because the Tritons had built many great undersea cities and structures in obeisance to their god which this in it it wasn't explicitly stated that this was such but I would assume this is at least in part due to the fact that Persana is the god of architecture as well as the god of the Tritons in general and they believe that Persona created them um from water that was in like a particular special spring in the elemental plane of water.
- 55:12SPEAKER_02: So they hail him both as a god and their creator um huh yeah I've never heard of Persona before either yeah he he's not he's not much besides I don't think he kind of appears anywhere past this it seems um and as far as their stats go Tritons have a plus one to strength and constitution and a minus one to dexterity and charisma which I will say it does not necessarily make the most sense to me that they would have a nerf to their dexterity in an underwater setting an overwater setting sure but yeah but yeah I mean they're built to be underwater why do they have a they got a nerf them somewhere there I guess and they didn't want to give them the the issue of having a negative two to charisma so they're like just give them a negative one to each of them.
- 56:06SPEAKER_02: Tritons' player characters can be fighters rangers mages clerics and priests with a level 15 limit for the mage class and a level 12 limit for all the others.
- 56:17SPEAKER_02: However they also have access to the um special class Dukar for which they have no level cap.
- 56:24SPEAKER_02: So real quickly I'm gonna talk about Dukars.
- 56:26SPEAKER_02: Dukars are a unique type of Sarosian wizard organized around four philosophical schools of thought and one unifying principle which is promote peace and harmony among all the races of Saros and Saros will prosper.
- 56:42SPEAKER_02: The primary difference between other types of specialist wizards and Dukars are the coral skeleton implants through which I'm sorry though what the coral skeleton implants what the fuck is what why what because it did it lets you do cool magic it lets you do cool underwater magic the coral skeleton implant though yeah it's fine don't worry about it it's implanted during a special Dukar ritual don't worry about it I'm also a little worried but so two and part of the reason I had to mention the Dukars uh well for one they the organization is named for the Triton who founded it his name was Dukar and it's not a Triton specific um class like I think seals some other people can be trit or Dukars excuse me um but part of the reason I had to mention it is because two types of Dukars exist each with their own role within the organization you have peacekeepers who strive to maintain peace in Seros and gather knowledge by further exploring the deep and then you have lore keepers who maintain the history and knowledge of the past and present.
- 57:56SPEAKER_02: So um we're we are ducars I guess um okay I'm thinking of getting my um coral magical implant on my butt I don't know I don't know about you guys like it does does it have to be visible?
- 58:13SPEAKER_02: Well I mean I I don't know that it necessarily has to but like there was one uh like illustration in the book of a Triton who had it like it was like this lump of coral growing on her forearm basically okay so you want your butt to be encased by skeleton coral basically no I just really wanted to say butt okay I mean look you put it wherever you want but like best I would not put it there fair enough well think carefully we can ponder our coral skeleton implants more while we take a break.
- 58:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah that that's for the best yeah because that's I gotta really think this over that's a big decision.
- 59:01SPEAKER_01: Hey everybody thank you so much for listening to this episode on Tritons.

- 1:02:01SPEAKER_01: So thank you again.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_01: And with that let's go ahead get you right back into the Tritons episode and uh hope you enjoy.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_02: So on second thought I've decided I'm not going to put the symbiotic coral on my butt.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_02: Um it's probably for the best really yeah yeah I feel like sitting would be a major pain in the ass.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_02: So that wasn't even intentional.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_02: So anyway uh Tritons appear in the third edition monster manual which was published in the year 2000 and their entry in the 3.5 Monster Manual was like completely reprinted as it often happens.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_02: Tritons are thought to originate from the elemental plane of water but have migrated to the material plane for some unknown purpose.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_02: So slightly different wording and honestly in my opinion less ominous less ominous but still just as mysterious right yeah because migrated is like okay yeah they found like a portal to the prime material plane and they were like okay this is pretty cool whatever we'll just settle here but planted is like someone's someone's doing something someone's doing something I don't like it.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_02: Um so Tritons have silvery skin that fades into silvery blue scales on the lower half of their body um tight tight tight tight tight yeah tight tritons form communities either in great undersea castles made of rock coral and other natural materials or in finely sculpted caverns um they are a hunter-gatherer people and they take from the sea's vast bounty only as much as they need to survive what are you doing taking from the sea's vast bounty so you can survive and also trying to tear away the cardboard um they are naturally suspicious of surface dwellers and prefer not to deal with them if possible same joke guys yeah insane uh however uh Tritons deal harshly with those who intentionally invade their communities same my community is my house um capturing intruders and setting them adrift without any possessions at least 10 miles from any shoreline aka the classic leaving them to the mercy of the sea naturally as they did before um tritons are which I believe I mentioned this in the Sahouagan episode Tritons are the natural enemy of the evil Sahouagan and absolutely cannot coexist peacefully with them.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_02: Right makes sense they're they are basically constantly at war with the Sahogagan which like I said it makes sense because they're good and the Sahogagan are evil evil yeah um dicks yeah fucking dicks I love those guys um so all tritons can as a spell like racial ability can use summon nature's ally three as a level five sorcerer once per day and they usually choose to summon a water elemental which makes sense makes sense yep yeah um they are usually neutral good and speak common and aquan so this is at that point kind of where a lot of the um those languages kind of collapsed into one elemental language yeah those like otter bizarre yeah languages are like just very racially specific kind of collapse into an elemental language yeah um tridons appear as player characters and they supplement Savage Species which was published in 2003 um this is a little bit like this is kind of a I don't know how it to explain like to convey this properly um basically they don't just appear strictly as like a race it's also like they're a race and a class so for example they have like Class features, but their class features are like, for example, the racial feature of their ability to use Summon Nature's Ally.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_02: So it's like, and then it suggests other classes to multi-class into.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_02: So it's like when you're selecting to play a Triton, you're selecting to play both that race and like Triton as like a job class.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_02: That was very strange.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was kind of weird.
- 1:06:32SPEAKER_02: And I had to like it literally took me a little bit to like parse it and figure out exactly what it what it all meant, but anyway.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_02: Um, and so there's a little like quote here.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_02: It says, quote, Tritons are good choices for players who want a water-adapted character, particularly for a sea-based campaign, but something with magic and more humanity than a Lokatha, Merfolk, or Sahuagan.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_02: So um, so they gain their ability to summon nature's ally at level four.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_02: Um, they have a plus two bonus to their strength and constitution.
- 1:07:09SPEAKER_02: They have a swim speed of 40 feet, but cannot walk on land, and instead drag themselves by their hands at a land speed of five feet.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_02: Um that's that's so bad.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_02: That's such a that's just such a bad thing to imagine.
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_02: I don't like it.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_01: I don't really like it either.
- 1:07:29SPEAKER_02: Um, so since they have a water setotype, they can breathe water or air equally well.
- 1:07:34SPEAKER_02: They have dark vision, and they speak common and aquin automatically.
- 1:07:40SPEAKER_02: And as I mentioned earlier, um it's so funny because it was like Triton.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_02: Favorite class, Triton.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_02: Perfect.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_02: And this is the best multi-classing choices for a Triton are cleric, druid, fighter, and wizard.
- 1:07:55SPEAKER_02: So there you go.
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_02: Uh hey, I want to multi-class into Triton.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_02: Let me just go slip on my two mermaid tails.
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_02: Oof, oof, oof.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_02: Um, they are proficient with all simple and martial weapons, but no shields or armor, which makes sense because they don't really wear armor.
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_02: But they are good with a variety of weapons.
- 1:08:16SPEAKER_02: So, um finally we're gonna go to fifth edition.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_02: Yes, that's right.
- 1:08:22SPEAKER_02: No fourth edition.
- 1:08:24SPEAKER_02: Because I scoured like every every one of the books that I could think of, and they were not in any of them.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_02: And I gave it a cursory Google search, and I found a couple of people um chit-chatting in forums about it that was basically like they were asking the same question I was, which is hey, am I crazy or does fourth edition not have tritons or myrrh people?
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_02: And everyone was like, Yeah, fourth edition doesn't have tritons, or apparent, which I didn't go back and double check this about the myrrh, but they apparently don't have like myrrh folk.
- 1:08:59SPEAKER_02: And also specifically, I think a few people said that it's like they don't have an analog, even because if they if they had an if they had a discernible analog, then I probably would have talked about it because there are some instances when you're like this is very clearly supposed to be this thing, it's just going by a different name or whatever.
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_01: But yeah, so so fourth edition, they just decided that Merv folk in general just don't exist.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_02: Which, like I said, I couldn't corroborate that because sure I was looking specifically for Tritons, but some people did mention that I guess they don't have like marrow.
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_01: That's a choice.
- 1:09:40SPEAKER_01: That's so weird.
- 1:09:41SPEAKER_01: I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm kind of happy because now we don't have fourth edition like ruining it.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_01: But also, what the fuck?
- 1:09:48SPEAKER_02: But then it's like it kind of ruined it by not right, yeah.
- 1:09:51SPEAKER_02: So it's like they just like put their foot in their mouth, they didn't like deep throat it.
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 1:09:57SPEAKER_02: Like they usually do.
- 1:09:58SPEAKER_02: So, fifth edition.
- 1:10:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:10:00SPEAKER_02: Um, I'm gonna start I'm gonna start you off with a with a quote that was at the head of their um entry in this source book.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_02: Quote Ah, the Tritons.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_02: Imagine if the elves spent a few centuries far beneath the sea where their arrogance and pretension could grow undisturbed.
- 1:10:16SPEAKER_02: At least the Tritons spent that time fighting Sahuaga and worse, so you know you can count on them in a fight.
- 1:10:21SPEAKER_02: And that's from Brago's Stoneheart Sea Captain from Volo's Guide to Monsters, which was published in 2016.
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_01: That's beautiful.
- 1:10:29SPEAKER_02: So that gives you an idea of what we're working with here.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_02: So, centuries prior to campaign time, uh, Tritons entered the world in response to the growing threat of evil elementals.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_02: It goes back very much to the overarching um elemental conflict.
- 1:10:46SPEAKER_02: That's a big theme a lot in 5th edition, like for example, with the Arkokra.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_02: Um, this is kind of a part of the water portion of that.
- 1:10:55SPEAKER_02: So Tritons waged many wars against their enemies on the plane of water, and they drove them into the darkened depths where they escaped into crushing pressure and darkness.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_02: So, in time, the Tritons noticed that their ancient foes had grown quiet, seemingly.
- 1:11:11SPEAKER_02: Um, expeditions to the deep revealed that Kraken, Sakuagen, etc., had fled the plane of water for the material plane.
- 1:11:20SPEAKER_02: So the Tritons, driven by a sense of duty and responsibility, would not allow their foes to escape.
- 1:11:26SPEAKER_02: So they journeyed to the material plane to seek out and destroy their former enemies on the plane of water.
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_02: So over time they did banish many of these uh creatures to the deepest reaches of the sea, and so they kind of settled on the prime material plane, um, at least a contingent of Tritons.
- 1:11:47SPEAKER_02: Like a lot of them do still live on the plane of water.
- 1:11:49SPEAKER_02: But like so, they settled to kind of watch and maintain this sort of stewardship over the over the sea, um, to basically keep watch for the return of any of these evil waterline creatures.
- 1:12:07SPEAKER_02: So, um, as a result of their isolation and limited understanding of the material plane, particularly the surface, uh, Tritons can come across as haughty and arrogant because they see themselves as the caretakers of the sea and expect other creatures to pay them obeisance, basically.
- 1:12:29SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:12:30SPEAKER_02: Um so it says, you know, of the Tritons' victories over dreadful undersea threats, but the Titans Tritons, quote, are delighted to expound upon the great debt others owe them.
- 1:12:45SPEAKER_02: Which is so funny.
- 1:12:47SPEAKER_02: Jesus.
- 1:12:48SPEAKER_02: God damn.
- 1:12:49SPEAKER_02: Jesus.
- 1:12:50SPEAKER_02: So the Triton's limited worldview leaves them ignorant of like all the the governments and wars and other assorted struggles of the surface world, which Tritons often see as minor events.
- 1:13:05SPEAKER_02: Like they they they basically see themselves as like they have like the biggest and greatest purpose to prevent these other things from happening.
- 1:13:15SPEAKER_02: It's like how the the Night's Watch was like, hey, yeah, this whole like White Walker thing, you know, well, like everyone down further south in Westeros was like basically family bickering.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_02: That's how they see it, you know what I mean?
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_02: So gosh.
- 1:13:34SPEAKER_02: So despite their um off-putting attitudes, that's a way to put it, right?
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_02: Tritons are benevolent creatures at heart, convinced that other civilized races deserve their protection.
- 1:13:45SPEAKER_02: Um, their attitude might be grating, but when pirate fleets uh attack or a kraken uh rises from the deep, they are among the first to take up arms to protect others.
- 1:13:58SPEAKER_01: Oh, they're so sweet.
- 1:13:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and they readily sacrifice themselves for the common good.
- 1:14:03SPEAKER_02: Um they will fight and die for humans, merfolk, and other creatures without question.
- 1:14:10SPEAKER_02: So they they kind of they they feel a sense of of like cultural guilt for allowing the evils of the plane of water to cross over to the primaterial plane and threaten the people there.
- 1:14:25SPEAKER_02: So they believe that they owe a debt to the world to like protect it from to protect it from what they see as like a failing on their part.
- 1:14:37SPEAKER_01: A very drastic shift in attitude towards, I mean, land dwellers specifically.
- 1:14:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, towards them just being like, nah, like leave us alone to this kind of like we will protect you, yeah, but also like kind of treat you a little bit like you're a stupid child.
- 1:14:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:14:54SPEAKER_01: Because obviously you can't just tr protect them and not treat them like that.
- 1:14:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:14:58SPEAKER_01: That wouldn't make sense.
- 1:14:59SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_02: So um at time their fervor and ignorance of the world can lead them astray.
- 1:15:06SPEAKER_02: Um for example, they uh often underestimate other creatures, which can leave them vulnerable to deception or surprise attacks, that sort of thing.
- 1:15:17SPEAKER_02: And because of their strong martial tradition, they can oftentimes be too eager to leap into a fight.
- 1:15:27SPEAKER_01: You know, it you take some, you lose some.
- 1:15:30SPEAKER_01: It's fine.
- 1:15:31SPEAKER_02: It's fine.
- 1:15:33SPEAKER_02: Um, so given their isolation, many Tritons have never been to the surface world.
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_02: Um, they find the idea of the various social institutions, kingdoms, different cultures, and stuff absolutely bewildering because their life in a Triton Protectorate is very like regimented, organized, and all sort of revolving around a common cause.
- 1:16:01SPEAKER_02: Also, a cute thing is that they find the changing of the seasons mystifying, which I think is actually adorable.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it does seem pretty damn adorable, though.
- 1:16:11SPEAKER_02: Um, so they're they're kind of just like to to see like all of these like different different kingdoms that are allying and betraying each other and all this kind of stuff as as very strange, and also kind of like, why are you doing that instead of just like unifying and working together?
- 1:16:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:16:33SPEAKER_02: Because they kind of it's so different from how they live.
- 1:16:37SPEAKER_02: Um so uh and okay, I forgot to mention this from the top.
- 1:16:43SPEAKER_02: This is all part of um the adaptation of Tritons as player characters in fifth edition.
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_02: So they don't have like a separate standalone like monster manual entry.
- 1:16:54SPEAKER_02: This is where all of their information comes from.
- 1:16:57SPEAKER_01: Okay, so this comes from an actual like player character.
- 1:17:00SPEAKER_02: Yes, so that was kind of like um explaining their role like in the world, and also like that would be things that would like influence your character's backstory.
- 1:17:13SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:17:14SPEAKER_02: So Tritons have a plus one to strength, constitution, and charisma.
- 1:17:18SPEAKER_02: They average about five feet tall, so they're actually a little shorter than the average human.
- 1:17:22SPEAKER_02: Um, they can breathe both air and water and have a walking and swimming speed of 30 feet.
- 1:17:27SPEAKER_02: They can finally walk now properly.
- 1:17:29SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:17:30SPEAKER_01: You don't have to just crawl yourself a troushy campaign.
- 1:17:33SPEAKER_02: God, that's how it be sometimes, though.
- 1:17:37SPEAKER_02: At least it feels that way.
- 1:17:39SPEAKER_02: Um, Tritons have resistance to cold and suffer no penalties otherwise caused by being at extreme depths, which makes sense.
- 1:17:47SPEAKER_02: Um, and as elemental line creatures, all tritons can cast a fog cloud, gust of wind, and wall of water once per day, and they get those fair those spells at various levels.
- 1:17:58SPEAKER_01: Dude.
- 1:17:58SPEAKER_01: That'd be that'd be cool though.
- 1:18:00SPEAKER_01: Just wall of water just sounds like fun.
- 1:18:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:18:06SPEAKER_02: Tritons can speak common and primordial, and can also convey basic ideas to any creature that breathes water, though they cannot understand them in turn.
- 1:18:17SPEAKER_02: Um, and they tend towards a lawful good alignment, as I'm sure the um like haughty uppity wants to treat other people like a stupid child but still protect them.
- 1:18:29SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:18:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's not very lawful good to me.
- 1:18:32SPEAKER_04: It's uh yeah.
- 1:18:33SPEAKER_02: Also, Aquin's a language in fifth edition, isn't it?
- 1:18:37SPEAKER_01: Isn't it?
- 1:18:40SPEAKER_02: I I feel like it is because I could swear that the Ara Cokra spoke Orin.
- 1:18:48SPEAKER_02: But it would be it would it's weird to me that they speak common and primordial, but not Aquan.
- 1:18:53SPEAKER_02: But I don't know if Aquan's a language in 5th edition.
- 1:18:55SPEAKER_02: I don't I honestly don't remember at the top of my head.
- 1:18:57SPEAKER_02: I feel like it is, though.
- 1:18:59SPEAKER_02: I no, I don't think it does.
- 1:19:01SPEAKER_01: I don't believe they have it.
- 1:19:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, I think it just got absorbed into the primordial because elementals all speak primordial.
- 1:19:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:19:13SPEAKER_02: Well, well, there you go.
- 1:19:15SPEAKER_02: I mean, I guess they at least speak to that like an elementally um aligned language.
- 1:19:21SPEAKER_02: So to finish off, one of my favorite things about the um character creation um entries in Folos Guide to Monsters is the Quirks table.
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_02: And these are honestly just all good.
- 1:19:35SPEAKER_02: So I'm literally just gonna read them all off.
- 1:19:37SPEAKER_02: It's one of those like you roll a d6 to get a particular quirk.
- 1:19:43SPEAKER_02: So I like I like those tables.
- 1:19:45SPEAKER_02: I know, I love them.
- 1:19:46SPEAKER_02: So one, you phrase requests as orders that you expect to be obeyed.
- 1:19:52SPEAKER_02: Two, you are quick to boast about the greatness of your civilization.
- 1:19:56SPEAKER_02: Three, you learned an antiquated version of common and drop V and Thou into your speech.
- 1:20:04SPEAKER_02: Four, you assume that people are telling you the truth about local customs and expectations.
- 1:20:09SPEAKER_02: Oh god.
- 1:20:10SPEAKER_02: AKA you have consigned yourself to being razzed by your party every time you go somewhere.
- 1:20:16SPEAKER_01: Like, oh yeah, no, they totally do.
- 1:20:18SPEAKER_01: They just walk up to someone, slap their ass.
- 1:20:19SPEAKER_01: That's how they say hello.
- 1:20:22SPEAKER_02: Weird custom, but I'm sure.
- 1:20:24SPEAKER_02: I used to take part.
- 1:20:26SPEAKER_02: And then the Triton gets arrested.
- 1:20:29SPEAKER_01: And or knock the fuck out.
- 1:20:31SPEAKER_01: Or both.
- 1:20:32SPEAKER_02: Both five.
- 1:20:34SPEAKER_02: The Surface World is a wondrous place, and you catalog all its details in a journal.
- 1:20:39SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 1:20:46SPEAKER_01: Literally just being the wind blew and limbs on a tree moved.
- 1:20:50SPEAKER_02: That's wild.
- 1:20:52SPEAKER_02: And then the next one.
- 1:20:53SPEAKER_02: Snakes?
- 1:20:54SPEAKER_01: Snakes?
- 1:20:55SPEAKER_02: Snakes! Way wrong campaign.
- 1:20:58SPEAKER_02: Um, and six, you mistakenly assume that surface folk know about and are impressed by your people's sister.
- 1:21:05SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 1:21:06SPEAKER_02: So, like, okay, okay.
- 1:21:08SPEAKER_02: They're literally himbos.
- 1:21:11SPEAKER_02: They're all himbos.
- 1:21:12SPEAKER_02: They're all himbos.
- 1:21:13SPEAKER_02: Like they're they're intel, like they're intelligent, but they're himbos.
- 1:21:16SPEAKER_01: They're himbos.
- 1:21:17SPEAKER_02: Because of course they're like handsome.
- 1:21:19SPEAKER_02: They're well naturally, I mean.
- 1:21:21SPEAKER_02: Right, yeah, naturally.
- 1:21:22SPEAKER_02: This is DD.
- 1:21:24SPEAKER_02: Who do you think we are?
- 1:21:24SPEAKER_02: Right, yeah.
- 1:21:25SPEAKER_02: They are horribly handsome and horribly, horribly, like insultingly handsome.
- 1:21:30SPEAKER_02: Also, what's interesting is like it it makes reference to like them having a patriarchal society, but beyond that, that note that is often dropped, and also these specific, I think in advanced ages of dragons, where it's like, as a general rule, only a male Triton engage in combat.
- 1:21:48SPEAKER_02: Like, it's never it's never explicitly detailed how like how like how it's patriarchal.
- 1:21:55SPEAKER_02: And also a lot of the like art depicts like female tritons like with weapons or like you know, clearly engaged in combat situations.
- 1:22:07SPEAKER_02: And like I said, it literally just says like they have a patriarchal society, but then don't it doesn't it doesn't explain how, right?
- 1:22:15SPEAKER_02: So, you know, that one's weird.
- 1:22:18SPEAKER_02: So, you know, like there you go.
- 1:22:21SPEAKER_01: Maybe it's just patriarchal to the point that kids don't do it.
- 1:22:26SPEAKER_01: I don't know, man.
- 1:22:27SPEAKER_02: It they decide not to explain it, so yeah, they literally it was like one line, and then they were like, okay.
- 1:22:33SPEAKER_01: Alright, good enough next.
- 1:22:34SPEAKER_03: Alright, good enough.
- 1:22:35SPEAKER_03: Guess what?
- 1:22:35SPEAKER_03: My Tritons are not a parent patriarchal society.
- 1:22:38SPEAKER_03: Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
- 1:22:40SPEAKER_02: Also, it's funny because a lot of the art, especially before the um like the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons um second edition, had some of that like really funny mermaid censorship.
- 1:22:52SPEAKER_02: Oh where it's like uh the very like thinnish strand of hair covering the nip.
- 1:23:00SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 1:23:01SPEAKER_02: Perfect, perfect.
- 1:23:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:23:03SPEAKER_02: Or there was like one where I think like a dude was literally holding a trident and like the um shaft of it like perfectly covered, and it's like like I understand that like you can't draw that, but like at least give it like a speedo.
- 1:23:21SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, yeah.
- 1:23:22SPEAKER_02: That's just that's too.
- 1:23:23SPEAKER_02: Or just like draw the boob with no nip because it was literally like an ornamental like ribbon kind of hanging off of like the this trident that she was holding, and then like a strand of her hair.
- 1:23:34SPEAKER_01: I'm pretty sure I have seen some art from like the really old like first edition and stuff where there's just no nipples drawn.
- 1:23:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like do like do that instead of this ridiculous, like white perfect change it.
- 1:23:47SPEAKER_02: Like this ridiculous, like, which it's funny, and the art is very nice, but it's just like like I don't know, give them give them swimsuits or something.
- 1:24:00SPEAKER_02: Give them swimsuits or something.
- 1:24:02SPEAKER_02: I don't know, but the the like so intentional, like perfect moment mermaid fucking hair censorship is hysterical to me.
- 1:24:11SPEAKER_02: The best.
- 1:24:12SPEAKER_01: It's great.
- 1:24:13SPEAKER_02: So anyway, that's Tritons! That's Tritons.
- 1:24:16SPEAKER_02: That's the Tritons.
- 1:24:17SPEAKER_02: That's the Tritons.
- 1:24:18SPEAKER_02: I enjoyed it very much.
- 1:24:20SPEAKER_02: The sea the sea people.
- 1:24:22SPEAKER_01: Oh man.
- 1:24:23SPEAKER_02: The one of like a million sea people.
- 1:24:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:24:26SPEAKER_01: I just love that they're bewildered by the changing of the seasons.
- 1:24:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:24:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they're the um, they're the like attractive, somewhat human-eye-looking sea people.
- 1:24:37unknown: Oh wait.
- 1:24:38unknown: That's a lot of them.
- 1:24:41SPEAKER_04: Thank you guys so much for listening to our 100th episode.
- 1:24:44SPEAKER_04: Oh my god.
- 1:24:44SPEAKER_04: It's insane.
- 1:24:45SPEAKER_04: It's wild.
- 1:24:46SPEAKER_01: It it is very insane.
- 1:24:48SPEAKER_01: And thank you, everyone who has stuck around for all 100 episodes.

- 1:25:00SPEAKER_02: Tritons.
- 1:25:01SPEAKER_03: I understand.
- 1:25:02SPEAKER_03: I'm also a big fan of these big, dumb himbos now.
- 1:25:05SPEAKER_02: They're not that big either.
- 1:25:07SPEAKER_02: Remember, they're five feet tall.
- 1:25:08SPEAKER_02: Oh, the average Triton shorter than you.
- 1:25:11unknown: Hmm.
- 1:25:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because I would be tall.
- 1:25:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:25:15SPEAKER_02: Taylor, the tall triton.
- 1:25:17SPEAKER_02: Look, I'm happy.
- 1:25:18SPEAKER_02: Just let me enjoy it.

- 1:25:33SPEAKER_02: Your friends who like tritons.
- 1:25:35SPEAKER_02: Your friends.
- 1:25:36SPEAKER_02: Your friends who are sea lions or giant seahorses or hippocampi.
- 1:25:41SPEAKER_03: Or friends who are hingos, I guess.
- 1:25:44SPEAKER_03: Just be like, this is you if you were an underwater DD character.
- 1:25:50SPEAKER_01: Your pirate friends.
- 1:25:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:25:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:25:53SPEAKER_02: Um, maybe not.
- 1:25:54SPEAKER_02: They don't really jive with Tritons because the whole chaotic pillaging and things.
- 1:26:00SPEAKER_01: They're they're part of the C, so it'll be fine.
- 1:26:02SPEAKER_01: It'll be fine.
- 1:26:03SPEAKER_01: Travis just likes pirates.
- 1:26:04SPEAKER_01: True.

- 1:26:34SPEAKER_01: So they're winter cold.
- 1:26:37SPEAKER_01: Well, not abused.
- 1:26:39SPEAKER_01: So when the winter comes, they're they're probably just surprised about the snow.
- 1:26:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:26:44SPEAKER_01: What would they do with snow?
- 1:26:46SPEAKER_05: They try to snow.
