- 0:00Welcome to "the Hoover Daily Report". Ideas Advancing
- 0:03Freedom. It's Monday, April 6th, twenty twenty six.
- 0:05Today, Condoleezza Rice tells students at Auburn University that they are key to
- 0:11revitalizing America’s democracy. Peter Robinson discusses the future of the
- 0:16conservative movement with none other than Ben Shapiro. And Matt Turpin
- 0:20discusses the difference between conducting a lethal and an effective
- 0:25military campaign, and the political and social implications of warfare.
- 0:29Condoleezza Rice Challenges Auburn Students to Strengthen Their Democracy.
- 0:33American democracy survives only when citizens take part in it, and not merely
- 0:38watch from the sidelines, Hoover Institution Director Condoleezza Rice
- 0:42said during a USA 250 Speaker Series event at Auburn University on March 30.
- 0:47Drawing on experiences from the collapse of Communism in Eastern Europe and the
- 0:52aftermath of 9/11, Rice told host and Hoover Institution overseer Margaret
- 0:56Hoover that democratic systems endure because they provide institutions that
- 1:01let societies manage conflict peacefully and adapt over time. Without those
- 1:05institutions, she warned, rights can collide and disputes can turn violent.
- 1:09Rice argued democracy is more than elections, courts, and constitutions; it
- 1:14also depends on civic habits such as service, volunteerism, and community
- 1:18engagement that knit people together.
- 1:21Ben Shapiro and the Battle for the Soul of Conservatism.
- 1:24The latest episode of Uncommon Knowledge with Peter Robinson asks: Is conservatism
- 1:29losing its way? Ben Shapiro, founding editor of the Daily Wire, says yes—and
- 1:34explains why. In this candid interview, Shapiro takes aim at conspiracy culture,
- 1:40fractures inside the right, and the growing distrust of institutions that is
- 1:45reshaping American politics. From college campuses to foreign policy to and future
- 1:50of media, this is a blunt assessment of where the movement stands—and where it
- 1:55could be headed next.
- 1:57Waging Limited Wars.
- 1:58On his Substack, Visting Fellow Matthew Turpin contrasts the concept of
- 2:02conducting a successful military campaign, as the US is so clearly doing
- 2:06in Iran, with the wider requirement of conducting a successful war, which moves
- 2:11from operational military competence to the political realm of designing a
- 2:15strategy and articulating a war’s aims and goals to the public. “If the war
- 2:19itself is poorly designed, inadequately explained, and improperly resourced, it
- 2:23is difficult for even brilliantly executed military campaigns to achieve
- 2:27the aims of the war or to retain public support when there are setbacks,” Turpin
- 2:32writes. Beyond that, Turpin says leaders should reach out to domestic political
- 2:36rivals and foreign allies before launching a military campaign to build
- 2:40consensus for a strike domestically and create a coalition of foreign allies to
- 2:44assist. Unfortunately, Turpin writes, Trump did neither.
- 2:47Minimum Wage Policy and Poverty.
- 2:49Visiting Fellow David Neumark spoke to Hoover Institution Summer Policy Boot
- 2:55Camp attendees in August 2025 about how the common understanding of minimum-wage
- 3:00laws and their ability to reduce poverty is misunderstood and often wrong. Neumark
- 3:06said the reason minimum-wage increases do little to reduce poverty is because the
- 3:12link between earning the minimum wage and happening to be part of a poor household
- 3:17is extremely tenuous. Furthermore, those in the bottom fifth of the income
- 3:23distribution now work fewer hours in a year than they did in the 1960s. Neumark
- 3:28said poorer Americans worked only 17 weeks of the year on average in 2018,
- 3:33down from 37 weeks per year in 1967. He said a better remedy for poverty in the
- 3:39US than raising the minimum wage would be to adjust the tax code and make measures
- 3:45such as the earned income tax credit more generous.
- 3:48Maintenance: The Hidden Force Behind Success and Collapse.
- 3:51What does a lone sailor circling the globe have to do with the fall of
- 3:55empires, the Model T, and the rise of AI? Everything—because maintenance, the quiet
- 4:00act of keeping things going, turns out to be the hidden force behind success and
- 4:05failure in nearly every domain of human endeavor. EconTalk's Russ Roberts speaks
- 4:10with Stewart Brand—creator of the Whole Earth Catalog, founder of the Long Now
- 4:15Foundation, and one of the great connective thinkers of the last
- 4:18half-century—to explore why some people and civilizations thrive while others
- 4:23collapse. From the 1968 Golden Globe Race, where three sailors' radically
- 4:27different attitudes toward maintenance determined their fates, to the M-16's
- 4:32deadly design flaws in Vietnam, and the cultural reasons Israel excels at crisis
- 4:37response but struggles with prevention, Brand’s thoughts range across history,
- 4:41warfare, technology, and philosophy. Along the way, host and guest discuss
- 4:46John Deere's war against its own farmers, the Model T as democratic revolution, and
- 4:51what AI might mean for human vigilance and connection.

- 4:56Li Ruie Papers.
- 4:58Li Ruie, a Chinese Communist Party government official and
- 5:02historian—secretary to Mao Zedong—who subsequently became a government critic,
- 5:07died in 2019 at the age of 101. His illuminating writings will remain
- 5:12publicly accessible at the Hoover Institution for generations to come after
- 5:18the resolution of a years-long legal challenge in March 2026.
- 5:22That’s your Hoover Daily Report for Monday, April 6th, twenty twenty six.
