- 0:16Speaker 1: What's up, guys.
- 0:17Speaker 2: It is Tom Kennedy here from Bare Bones and our
- 0:20Speaker 2: new EP ceremonial Rage is out today.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Check it out.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Fantastic Tom, thanks for joining us today.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Brother Chris, thanks for having me. Man, good to chat again.
- 0:30Speaker 3: For sure, my friend, it's been a while between dreams.
- 0:33Speaker 1: It has, indeed, it has. Indeed.
- 0:36Speaker 4: So as you say, my friend, Barebones drop you latest
- 0:39Speaker 4: EP ceremony Rage two days. So how long have you
- 0:43Speaker 4: been sitting on it before setting it out free into
- 0:45Speaker 4: the world.
- 0:46Speaker 2: So we recorded it probably sort of August September last year,
- 0:53Speaker 2: and then you know, just the regular stuff, getting it mixed,
- 0:56Speaker 2: getting the artwork done, filming a couple of music videos,
- 1:00Speaker 2: and we kind of did a bit of a drip
- 1:03Speaker 2: feed this time. We put out a single every every
- 1:06Speaker 2: month for the last couple of months and then sort of.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Just dropped the full thing today. Man. So it's been
- 1:14Speaker 1: it's been good. Like we've we've had kind of.
- 1:17Speaker 2: A constant stream of music, which is something that we
- 1:19Speaker 2: haven't had for a little while.
- 1:20Speaker 1: So it's exciting.
- 1:23Speaker 4: The press release calls it your heaviest and most aggressive
- 1:26Speaker 4: release yet, would you.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Agree one hundred Yeah, I think so, for sure, Man,
- 1:31Speaker 2: I think it's kind of a natural progression from from
- 1:35Speaker 2: where we've been going.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Our music seems to get heavier each time, Like we put.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Out our first full length album, Bad Habits, and then
- 1:46Speaker 2: when we went and did our second full length, Rival Minds,
- 1:49Speaker 2: people were like, this is this is definitely heavier and darker,
- 1:53Speaker 2: and then it's just kind of been going more and
- 1:56Speaker 2: more that way ever since.
- 1:57Speaker 1: So kind of a natural progression, and this is where
- 2:00Speaker 1: we've ended up.
- 2:02Speaker 4: Is it something like when you sit down to sort
- 2:04Speaker 4: of plan the next cycle. I guess do you speak
- 2:07Speaker 4: about that as a band, like you say we want
- 2:09Speaker 4: to go a little bit heavier or does it just
- 2:11Speaker 4: come out?
- 2:12Speaker 1: You know what?
- 2:12Speaker 2: Man, We've been around for like twelve thirteen years at
- 2:15Speaker 2: this point, and this EP is the.
- 2:18Speaker 1: First time we've ever had that conversation.
- 2:21Speaker 2: It's always kind of been like this unconscious vibe thing
- 2:26Speaker 2: going into too writing. It's just like, well, let's just
- 2:29Speaker 2: do what we always do and get together and come
- 2:32Speaker 2: up with some riffs and stuff. But this time, before
- 2:36Speaker 2: we sort of started, we kind of had that chat
- 2:39Speaker 2: like what direction do we want to take this? And
- 2:42Speaker 2: for us, it's kind of getting back to the stuff
- 2:45Speaker 2: that we grew up on, you know, being in a
- 2:47Speaker 2: band with unique distinct personalities.
- 2:51Speaker 1: You've all got pretty different tastes when it comes to
- 2:55Speaker 1: music and art and all that kind of stuff.
- 2:57Speaker 2: But I guess the one thing that we we've always
- 3:01Speaker 2: loved and agreed on is bands like Slipknot Corn, Limp Biscuit,
- 3:06Speaker 2: and so we just kind of thought, let's lean into that,
- 3:10Speaker 2: let's try and give a modern take on that kind
- 3:12Speaker 2: of thing and and.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Put our spin on it. And and so yeah, that
- 3:17Speaker 1: was kind.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Of the vibe going in, like let's capture that heavy
- 3:21Speaker 2: crew that we grew up on.
- 3:23Speaker 4: Yeah, you mentioned those three bands like Slipping Off Corner,
- 3:27Speaker 4: Limp Biscuit, which you can definitely hear in there, bro,
- 3:29Speaker 4: But I think above all else you can hear a
- 3:31Speaker 4: shipload of seven Dust and they're one of my favorite bands.
- 3:33Speaker 1: So that he is a compliment, Thank you, bro.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I love seven Dust a lot, so that's that's
- 3:39Speaker 2: a huge compliment. But yeah, man, like all the stuff
- 3:43Speaker 2: from that time, you know, that was our formative years
- 3:46Speaker 2: as musicians when all of those bands were kind of
- 3:49Speaker 2: kicking ass. So we take a lot of inspiration from that,
- 3:53Speaker 2: and I think it well, I hope that it comes through.
- 3:56Speaker 1: It was quite authentic because we all really do love
- 3:59Speaker 1: that stuff.
- 4:01Speaker 4: A lot of those lines bra if you're it's a
- 4:03Speaker 4: good point, they're like, that is all that's your inspiration
- 4:05Speaker 4: and you drew up on that, But now you're older
- 4:07Speaker 4: and you're making your own music.
- 4:09Speaker 3: That's naturally going to be drawn on. But it still
- 4:12Speaker 3: does sound like it's yours.
- 4:13Speaker 4: So as a band, like, how fine of a line
- 4:16Speaker 4: is there between imitation and inspiration and where do you
- 4:19Speaker 4: draw that line from?
- 4:19Speaker 3: Make it your own?
- 4:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I think like we never I guess we never
- 4:25Speaker 2: set out to make something that sounds like those bands.
- 4:28Speaker 2: You know, it's not so much of like, well, let's
- 4:32Speaker 2: write a seven Off song or a lymp Biscuits song.
- 4:35Speaker 2: It's more taking the elements from those things and then
- 4:39Speaker 2: putting it through the filter that is bare bones. Like
- 4:42Speaker 2: we've been making music together for so long now that
- 4:45Speaker 2: we sort of have our own flavor that just sort
- 4:50Speaker 2: of naturally gets injected into everything. Like I think if
- 4:53Speaker 2: we wanted to try and rip someone off, you would
- 4:57Speaker 2: still hear.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Bare bones in it.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Like it's sort of sewing grained in what we do
- 5:01Speaker 2: now that I don't think even if we wanted to
- 5:03Speaker 2: we could avoid it.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Yeah, answer man, good answer.
- 5:07Speaker 4: Now that there's only five songs on the EP, mate,
- 5:09Speaker 4: so I want to go through on one of the
- 5:10Speaker 4: time and tell me a bit more about it musically
- 5:12Speaker 4: and a bit about the the making of it, I guess.
- 5:15Speaker 1: So for sure, I'm not sure if these are in the.
- 5:17Speaker 3: Right order, and but we'll start with Cobra Clutch.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:21Speaker 2: So Cobra Clutch sort of is one of those songs
- 5:25Speaker 2: that if you heard the initial demo and then you
- 5:28Speaker 2: heard what it ended up you you'd think, how.
- 5:31Speaker 1: The hell is this the same song? But that one was.
- 5:35Speaker 2: It was kind of like written and originally as sort
- 5:38Speaker 2: of this like almost static x industrial metal track, and
- 5:44Speaker 2: then we added that that really heavy intro onto the
- 5:47Speaker 2: start of it, and it sort of went in this
- 5:50Speaker 2: other direction.
- 5:52Speaker 1: But it's sort of it's a song where we got to.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Play with dynamics a lot, which is something that we
- 5:59Speaker 2: haven't done all that much in the past. Like if
- 6:01Speaker 2: you look at the waveform for a Bare Bones song,
- 6:05Speaker 2: usually it's just like as loud as possible the entire
- 6:10Speaker 2: way through. And so we kind of wanted to again
- 6:14Speaker 2: like getting back to that corn influence like, I really
- 6:18Speaker 2: love how the verses in their songs sort of everything
- 6:22Speaker 2: kind of dips down and it gets a little.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Bit kind of eerie and and you.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Can sort of just focus on what Jonathan's saying and
- 6:29Speaker 2: the music's just sort of like setting a bit of
- 6:31Speaker 2: atmosphere around that.
- 6:33Speaker 1: So that was kind of the vibe. We wanted to
- 6:36Speaker 1: have this really.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Kind of chaotic, heavy intro, a really heavy chorus, and
- 6:41Speaker 2: then put this kind of eerie verse in there, and
- 6:44Speaker 2: I'm really happy where how it came out. Man, And
- 6:47Speaker 2: you know, vocally, this this new EP is something different
- 6:52Speaker 2: for me, Like I'm essentially rapping on a lot of
- 6:55Speaker 2: these songs and you kind of hear that on Covid
- 6:58Speaker 2: Clutch and it's sort of intro juices that idea to
- 7:01Speaker 2: the listener. So I think it's a good way to start.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Nice. And then we got Verte Breaker.
- 7:06Speaker 1: I like that nice planned words, Yeah, thank you. So
- 7:10Speaker 1: something that you may not have picked up on.
- 7:11Speaker 2: I guess a lot of people wouldn't unless you're a
- 7:13Speaker 2: total fucking nerd like we are. But every song on
- 7:17Speaker 2: the EP is named after a pro wrestling maneuver. So
- 7:25Speaker 2: the Vertere Breaker is one of my favorite wrestling moves,
- 7:28Speaker 2: and I just thought it sounded like a cool song title,
- 7:31Speaker 2: So that's where that came from.
- 7:34Speaker 1: And yeah, vertere Breaker again.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Man, like you can hear the DJ scratching when the
- 7:39Speaker 2: guitars kick in, and again it's just kind of a
- 7:43Speaker 2: bit of an ode to that new metal groove, metal
- 7:47Speaker 2: kind of bouncy a thing going on. And then you know,
- 7:51Speaker 2: I'm a big fan of a seven dos, like you said,
- 7:55Speaker 2: in bands like kill Switch Engage that have those really
- 7:58Speaker 2: soaring choruses, so I kind of wanted to write something
- 8:03Speaker 2: that was really anthemic and catchy for the chorus.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Uh. And then you know, we.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Kind of got to halfway through the song and we
- 8:14Speaker 2: were pretty much happy with how it was done, and
- 8:16Speaker 2: then we just sort of said, like, no, we need
- 8:19Speaker 2: to put the most filthy breakdown possible at the end
- 8:22Speaker 2: of this song. So yeah, that's that breakdown at the
- 8:26Speaker 2: end of vere Break is definitely one of our heaviest moments,
- 8:28Speaker 2: and I'm stoked on how it came out. It's injecting
- 8:32Speaker 2: a bit of our old school hardcore into that, which
- 8:35Speaker 2: we're all about as well.
- 8:37Speaker 4: No, I think it's important to jump in here and
- 8:39Speaker 4: say too, like any longtime fans of the man, like
- 8:41Speaker 4: you mentioned the fact that you've got the rappiest sort
- 8:43Speaker 4: of vocals you just mentioned with that song is a
- 8:44Speaker 4: bit of a DJ scratch in there, but don't worry,
- 8:47Speaker 4: the guys have not gone wrap on you like it
- 8:49Speaker 4: is in there, but it's still metal as fuck. So
- 8:51Speaker 4: I just thought that jumping in a case someone's listening
- 8:54Speaker 4: absolutely mananged.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, think think more.
- 8:59Speaker 2: I think more along lines of Zachadella Rocker then you
- 9:02Speaker 2: know jay.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Z for sure.
- 9:07Speaker 3: I've never got Tiger Driver.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Yeah, so Tiger Driver was a cooler man.
- 9:13Speaker 2: This song came about in like we start to finish
- 9:16Speaker 2: it literally took maybe two hours, Like we've never written
- 9:20Speaker 2: a song this quickly. Again drawing on a bit of
- 9:24Speaker 2: a hip hop influence. I had this vocal sample from
- 9:29Speaker 2: a Mob Deep song, and I had this idea that
- 9:34Speaker 2: we should sort of chop it up and use it
- 9:36Speaker 2: as kind of like a building block for a song.
- 9:39Speaker 2: So you'll hear this vocal sample when the song kicks in,
- 9:44Speaker 2: and that's actually a Mob Deep song from like a
- 9:47Speaker 2: nineties New York rap song that we chopped up and
- 9:50Speaker 2: then sort of built a riff around that and then
- 9:54Speaker 2: it kind of just went went from there. So that's
- 9:57Speaker 2: definitely I would say probably like the most limp Biscuit
- 10:01Speaker 2: influenced on the EP.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Something very different for us, but it's to me when I.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Hear it, I think like this would have gone off
- 10:12Speaker 2: Woodstock ninety.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Nine or something, you know, like, yeah, all right, then.
- 10:18Speaker 3: You got Burning Hammer. Now, I fucking love that title.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Thank you man, thank you. Yeah. So Berning Hammer is
- 10:25Speaker 1: probably kind of.
- 10:25Speaker 2: The most straightforward, heavy hardcore based kind of track. We
- 10:33Speaker 2: took a lot of influence from again, Rage against the
- 10:35Speaker 2: Machine on that one, and then there's a bit of
- 10:40Speaker 2: like some weird kind of master it on guitar things
- 10:43Speaker 2: going on in there.
- 10:44Speaker 1: So again it's something new for us.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Man, and we're really happy with how that one came out,
- 10:49Speaker 2: and lyrically.
- 10:51Speaker 1: That one is pretty important.
- 10:54Speaker 2: It's about in a nutshell, it's essentially about you know,
- 10:58Speaker 2: there's there's all these kind of messed up things happening
- 11:02Speaker 2: around the world, and you know, you'll see in the
- 11:06Speaker 2: news cycle you'll hear about a couple of you know,
- 11:10Speaker 2: wars or atrocities against people going on in the news,
- 11:15Speaker 2: but there's so many things going on out there that
- 11:18Speaker 2: people just turn a blind eye to And you know,
- 11:22Speaker 2: I watched the documentary. I was watching a lot of
- 11:25Speaker 2: documentaries around the time that this, that we were writing
- 11:29Speaker 2: this EP, and I just remember watching this documentary and thinking, like,
- 11:35Speaker 2: how are people just turning a blind eye to this
- 11:37Speaker 2: stuff going on in the world and the media doesn't
- 11:40Speaker 2: cover it? And yeah, so it's kind of it's a
- 11:43Speaker 2: bit of a heavy track thematically as well, but I
- 11:47Speaker 2: just kind of wanted to put that out there and
- 11:50Speaker 2: I think you can hear that it's a bit of
- 11:51Speaker 2: an angry song and a bit of a heavy song,
- 11:53Speaker 2: and yeah, it's it's the one song that we didn't
- 11:58Speaker 2: sort of package as a single or anything, so it's
- 12:01Speaker 2: just a heavy, angry one to throw on the EP.
- 12:06Speaker 3: And Black Mass is the last one.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Yeah, so black Mass is again to me, it's kind
- 12:13Speaker 2: of maybe the most unique to our previous discography, Like
- 12:20Speaker 2: it is really quite heavy and sort of doomy and groovy,
- 12:25Speaker 2: but then it.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Has this sort of almost like.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Radio rock chorus, and I just think it's kind of
- 12:34Speaker 2: this weird fusion of really heavy but then a bit
- 12:39Speaker 2: of like a i don't know, like popa roach almost
- 12:43Speaker 2: in some of the choruses and stuff. So yeah, man,
- 12:47Speaker 2: again it's something new for us. But really happy with
- 12:50Speaker 2: how that track came out too.
- 12:52Speaker 4: So you've got to the end of this EP, Broan,
- 12:54Speaker 4: Like we've said a few times that it is heavier
- 12:56Speaker 4: and more aggressive than anything you've ever done. You get
- 12:59Speaker 4: to the end of this, listen back now and go radios.
- 13:02Speaker 4: That's around where you want to stay for a little while.
- 13:04Speaker 4: So we'll keep doing this or do you think I
- 13:05Speaker 4: want to go heavy again or I want to go
- 13:07Speaker 4: somewhere else again?
- 13:08Speaker 3: What's the thought process?
- 13:10Speaker 2: I think I think that we kind of we tend
- 13:14Speaker 2: to do this every release. We'll kind of once you're
- 13:17Speaker 2: a bit sort of removed from the making of it
- 13:20Speaker 2: and you can kind of listen to it, we'll pick
- 13:23Speaker 2: out parts that we think like, oh man, that really
- 13:26Speaker 2: works for us.
- 13:27Speaker 1: We should you know, We've got to keep doing that.
- 13:30Speaker 2: But in saying that, man, when it comes time to
- 13:32Speaker 2: sitting down and writing, I'm sure we'll have a brand
- 13:35Speaker 2: new idea again, and it'll probably sound totally different. But
- 13:40Speaker 2: I think in terms of a lot of it, we've.
- 13:43Speaker 1: Kind of nailed where we want to be.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Like at this point, like I said, we've been doing
- 13:47Speaker 2: this a really long time, and we really still do
- 13:51Speaker 2: it just because we love it so much. And I
- 13:53Speaker 2: think we've kind of rediscovered that love a lot through
- 13:57Speaker 2: this EP, so I don't think we'll strained too far
- 14:00Speaker 2: from it, but it's definitely reinvigorated us.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Man. So who knows what will happen from here?
- 14:06Speaker 4: Nice and to celebrate you have a special law show
- 14:09Speaker 4: tonight March twentieth that the newly opened Chuck Trailers in Sydney.
- 14:13Speaker 4: So first you tell us about the venue it looks
- 14:15Speaker 4: like a cracker, and then tell us about the gig.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Yeah, man, So Chuck Trailers is it's very cool.
- 14:23Speaker 2: It's this sort of dive bar that's known for having
- 14:27Speaker 2: the best chicken wings in Sydney. They've got another venue
- 14:31Speaker 2: over in Bondi that's doing really well, and they came
- 14:35Speaker 2: to us with the idea of what they want to
- 14:37Speaker 2: do for the Sydney one, and they were like, well, look,
- 14:39Speaker 2: the plan is we're going to do, you know, a
- 14:42Speaker 2: dive bar and a chicken joint upstairs, and then in
- 14:45Speaker 2: the basement we're going to build a half pipe which
- 14:48Speaker 2: is going to be the stage and we're just going
- 14:50Speaker 2: to have sick basement shows where everyone goes crazy.
- 14:54Speaker 1: And as you can imagine, we were in from the
- 14:58Speaker 1: get go.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Being in a half pipe is like, I think every
- 15:02Speaker 2: dude who grew up, you know, loving skateboarding and punk
- 15:07Speaker 2: rock and metal and watching old videotapes and DVDs of
- 15:12Speaker 2: dudes shredding, you've always wanted to play a gig and
- 15:14Speaker 2: a half pipe. So that's a bucket list for sure.
- 15:18Speaker 2: And the gig itself, man, it's gonna be it's gonna
- 15:20Speaker 2: be awesome. Chris, you'd probably be familiar with Frankie's Pizza.
- 15:24Speaker 2: That was an institution here in Sydney for live music
- 15:27Speaker 2: and having a rock and metal focused venue. It's free
- 15:32Speaker 2: entry that anyone you know, there's no barrier to entry.
- 15:35Speaker 2: If you're broke, you can still come down and have
- 15:37Speaker 2: a good time. I think it's really important for bands,
- 15:40Speaker 2: and it's really important for the punters too.
- 15:42Speaker 1: So I think with Jordan at the.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Helm, putting together these killer lineups in a cool venue.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Where it's free entry, it's a recipe for success.
- 15:54Speaker 2: And you know when we when we first put the
- 15:57Speaker 2: show together, the idea was just us to play and
- 16:01Speaker 2: it was a one band bill and this week they
- 16:04Speaker 2: kind of said to us, you know what, man like,
- 16:06Speaker 2: let's beef it up, let's make it a party, let's
- 16:08Speaker 2: get a bunch of you mates on. So literally yesterday
- 16:11Speaker 2: we locked in four other bands that are going to
- 16:14Speaker 2: be playing with us, and it's a completely mixed bag
- 16:18Speaker 2: of bands, so there's something for everybody, and we're really excited,
- 16:22Speaker 2: man Like. We came up playing these free shows at
- 16:26Speaker 2: these cool venues where we sort of built it from
- 16:29Speaker 2: the ground up. We were one of the first bands
- 16:32Speaker 2: to play at Frankie's and now we're one of the
- 16:34Speaker 2: first bands to play at Chuck Trailor's. So yeah, I
- 16:37Speaker 2: think anyone who's coming downs in for a treat nice.
- 16:40Speaker 4: And the place has only been open for a week
- 16:42Speaker 4: from what I can gather race and not many people might.
- 16:44Speaker 3: Know where it is.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right, man. It's a great location. It's on
- 16:49Speaker 2: York Street, right in the heart of the city. So
- 16:52Speaker 2: if you're around that Sydney town Hall area, smack bang
- 16:55Speaker 2: in the middle of the city, you're like a three
- 16:57Speaker 2: minute walk away. So thirty six York Street, Sydney, No excuses,
- 17:03Speaker 2: starts right after your finished work, leave the office and
- 17:06Speaker 2: come down and have a motion and have a good
- 17:08Speaker 2: time fantasy.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Right.
- 17:10Speaker 4: If there's one thing I know about fair Bones is
- 17:13Speaker 4: you don't spend much time off the stage, so I'm
- 17:15Speaker 4: sure this is in your only show coming up.
- 17:16Speaker 3: What else you got?
- 17:18Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right man, So we've got this.
- 17:20Speaker 2: In two weeks we're playing with a friend's band called
- 17:24Speaker 2: Father deer Hands over at the burdick In Hotel in Sydney,
- 17:29Speaker 2: so that should be.
- 17:30Speaker 1: A really fun one.
