Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Yes, here he is, ladies and gentlemen, the always alert
- 0:03Speaker 1: and always active autocrat of the Wine Academy of Utah, WineAcademyofUtah.com,
- 0:07Speaker 1: Jimmy Santangelo.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Hey, good morning.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Happy Thursday.
- 0:11Speaker 3: Hey. We got wine in a plastic cup. It's delicious.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Nothing but the best for you, Bill. Thank you.
- 0:32Speaker 2: This is called Tree Fort, and it's out of Paso Robles.
- 0:35Speaker 2: This is their Cabernet Sauvignon. It says, it should just
- 0:39Speaker 2: say Bill Allred on here, but they misspelled it.
- 0:41Speaker 1: They said rich and bold.
- 0:43Speaker 3: It is, too.
- 0:46Speaker 2: One thing I love about this wine is it's from
- 0:49Speaker 2: one of my favorite wine-growing regions, Paso Robles. For those
- 0:52Speaker 2: that don't know where this is, this is Central Coast, California.
- 0:54Speaker 2: So Central Coast, kind of a bigger area. So if
- 0:57Speaker 2: you're thinking of California, this is south of San Francisco,
- 1:00Speaker 2: north of Los Angeles, even further south of Monterey, north
- 1:05Speaker 2: of Santa Barbara. And that's where you have your Paso Robles.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Love this area. Still farmers out there. Still wearing the
- 1:13Speaker 2: pistol arrows at the gas station.
- 1:16Speaker 1: This is where all the cowboys in my family live.
- 1:19Speaker 1: No kidding. Oh, yeah. When I go to California, this
- 1:23Speaker 1: is where I go. This is great. I really like
- 1:26Speaker 1: this one growing region.
- 1:27Speaker 2: It's more of a Mediterranean climate, so a lot of
- 1:30Speaker 2: olives grown there. They have the Rhone-style reds. They used
- 1:35Speaker 2: to be the Rhone Rangers. They used to have a
- 1:37Speaker 2: festival all the time. We kind of backed away from that.
- 1:40Speaker 2: A lot of Cabernets, Zinfandels, amongst other styles of wine. This,
- 1:44Speaker 2: of course, Tree Fort Cabernet Sauvignon, 13.8%.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Alcohol by volume.
- 1:50Speaker 2: It is a blend. They change each year their blends.
- 1:54Speaker 2: And I was going off of the 2020, but this
- 1:56Speaker 2: is the 2021. So I looked up the blend, this
- 1:59Speaker 2: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon. So right there at the edge of
- 2:01Speaker 2: how much. So that's where they can put the. Name
- 2:04Speaker 2: on the bottle, the Cabernet, the varietal. Petit, Syrah, Merlot,
- 2:07Speaker 2: and Malbec, 5% each as a blend. And the year
- 2:11Speaker 2: before that, it was 95% Cabernet, like 5% Malbec. So
- 2:16Speaker 2: they're really playing around, making sure the vintage, the wine
- 2:18Speaker 2: expresses the best each year.
- 2:21Speaker 1: It's delicious. I like it. Do you like this one?
- 2:23Speaker 3: Now, again, I'm not a Cabernet Sauvignon person. It's usually
- 2:28Speaker 3: too tannic for me, and I admit, this is slightly tannic,
- 2:33Speaker 3: which is okay. But it's really, it's got a big
- 2:38Speaker 3: fruit forward flavor.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Yeah, very. It's much fruitier for 13.8%.
- 2:42Speaker 2: I would expect this with the full body.
- 2:45Speaker 1: It's like a boysenberry. Loganberry. It's like a concentrated fruit component.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Black cherry. A really concentrated fruit that's not too dry
- 2:55Speaker 2: and tannic. Good acidity, well-balanced wine. Drinks much richer and
- 2:59Speaker 2: bolder than what one might suspect. Because we've all been
- 3:06Speaker 2: pinching pennies. We were talking about that, hey, what type
- 3:09Speaker 2: of wine do you mean?
- 3:10Speaker 1: It was so funny.
- 3:12Speaker 2: After we had that conversation last week, three people over
- 3:15Speaker 2: my events since then have said.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Hey, I'm kind of the $ 25 bottles that I've usually
- 3:20Speaker 1: been getting. Got any recommendations?
- 3:22Speaker 2: And the $ 15 guys are like, hey, got anything less expensive?
- 3:29Speaker 3: I've been spending $ 9 on a bottle of Barefoot. So
- 3:32Speaker 3: what am I doing?
- 3:33Speaker 2: Well, I got you covered. This is what you have here.
- 3:37Speaker 2: National retail price for this bottle is $ 16.
- 3:41Speaker 1: 99.
- 3:42Speaker 2: However, Utah carries it at $ 8.
- 3:45Speaker 1: You're kidding.
- 3:48Speaker 2: $ 7.
- 3:48Speaker 3: 99.
- 3:48Speaker 1: And it's delicious. It's a discontinued item. Oh, that's okay.
- 3:52Speaker 1: So it's discontinued.
- 3:53Speaker 2: They have 380 bottles in the warehouse, roughly, and 480
- 3:59Speaker 2: distributed out there.
- 4:00Speaker 1: So what the state probably did, complete speculation.
- 4:03Speaker 2: bought a pallet, held on to a bunch, dropped it,
- 4:07Speaker 2: distributed it to the floor of the different wine stores,
- 4:10Speaker 2: see which ones are going to sell it quickest, and
- 4:13Speaker 2: then supply it back.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Up again, something like that. $ 7. 99.
- 4:18Speaker 2: It also has a Pinot, but there's only nine bottles
- 4:20Speaker 2: of the Pinot left in the state, and it's in
- 4:22Speaker 2: Tooele and Price.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Oh, wow. I'm going through Price later on tomorrow. Oh,
- 4:29Speaker 1: there you go.
- 4:30Speaker 2: I haven't had the Pinot. I've worked with this product before.
- 4:34Speaker 2: I really like it.
- 4:35Speaker 1: So it's called Tree Fort. Tree Fort. Great label. I
- 4:38Speaker 1: can put it back up on the camera there.
- 4:40Speaker 2: And we always take a photo and put it on
- 4:43Speaker 2: the website for the post show so people can go
- 4:46Speaker 2: to the x96.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Com radio from hell. Go get a case of it, Kerry. Yeah,
- 4:50Speaker 1: it's going to be well under $ 100, the case.
- 4:52Speaker 2: And some of the wines that I've used with the
- 4:54Speaker 2: Tree Fort, have shown sediment, and I believe that was
- 5:01Speaker 2: the 2020, but don't quote me on it, because the 2021,
- 5:06Speaker 2: I was like, oh, wait a minute, have I used this?
- 5:08Speaker 3: So you just want to decant it if there's sediment, right?
- 5:11Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you'd want to decant it. All of them
- 5:13Speaker 1: are screw tops.
- 5:14Speaker 2: So for the 2020 to throw off sediment, screw top,
- 5:17Speaker 2: that's an indicator of how quickly wines will age differently
- 5:20Speaker 2: in a screw top, a little bit more accelerated.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Than, say, with a cork closure.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Meaning if you had this 2020 in the screw top
- 5:28Speaker 2: versus 2020 in a cork, the sediment.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Wouldn't have been thrown off as quickly in the cork.
- 5:34Speaker 2: However, we're not considering finding infiltration of how much the
- 5:39Speaker 2: winemaker did that before the wine went in the bottle.
- 5:41Speaker 1: So there's some factors. I wouldn't mind a little more.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Do you want to revisit this, Bill?
- 5:44Speaker 3: Just a little more. Just a little, yeah.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Just revisit that. There we go. A rich and bold revisit.
- 5:52Speaker 1: I'm still on my first visit. Don't overstay your visit.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Jimmy is here for just this one segment, so if
- 6:00Speaker 3: you have any questions, you can call us, 877-602-9696, or
- 6:02Speaker 3: you can text questions for Jimmy.
- 6:04Speaker 1: 33986. There is one text question here.
- 6:10Speaker 2: It says, I've never been a wine drinker, but I
- 6:12Speaker 2: want to have a little red wine.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Each day for heart health.
- 6:15Speaker 3: What's a good red wine for someone who knows nothing
- 6:18Speaker 3: about red wine?
- 6:19Speaker 2: Well, right here, and I'm going to tell you why.
- 6:21Speaker 2: It's got the good price point. It's medicinal for your
- 6:24Speaker 2: medicinal value. And you know what? Somebody asked me the
- 6:29Speaker 2: other day, it's like, I don't usually pour like a
- 6:32Speaker 2: full glass wine that you get at a restaurant with meal.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Is that okay?
- 6:36Speaker 3: Right.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Thinking that they were doing something wrong like no my
- 6:39Speaker 2: in fact my dad he has in this little glass
- 6:41Speaker 2: just a little bit of red wine it's it's not
- 6:44Speaker 2: a wine glass it's like a juice glass and you
- 6:47Speaker 2: have it with your macaroni or you're just uh and
- 6:51Speaker 2: that's great yeah that's what it's about it's about food
- 6:53Speaker 2: and wine uh whether it's heart health or food and
- 6:55Speaker 2: wine just having a little dish of pasta with a
- 6:58Speaker 2: with a small glass.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Of red wine that's a screw top nothing wrong with
- 7:01Speaker 1: that nice and easy so yeah yeah.
- 7:04Speaker 3: 877-602-9696. Any questions for Jimmy about wine or spirits or
- 7:09Speaker 3: restaurants or anything like that, or you can text questions
- 7:12Speaker 3: at 33986. You have a lot of ticketed events, the
- 7:17Speaker 3: Wine Academy of Utah coming up.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Yeah, we've been very fortunate.
- 7:20Speaker 2: These are ticketed events outside of some of the private
- 7:23Speaker 2: events that we do as well next week. So I'm
- 7:27Speaker 2: just going to list, you can go to WineAcademyofUtah.com, click
- 7:29Speaker 2: on the ticketed event, and it'll show you all the
- 7:32Speaker 2: and then you can click on that for a ticket
- 7:34Speaker 2: and more information.
- 7:35Speaker 1: But if you've ever heard of The Breaks, that pub,
- 7:39Speaker 1: it's really cool. It's really nice.
- 7:40Speaker 2: They've got them all over Saratoga Springs. Love those guys
- 7:45Speaker 2: out there. That's next week. Also, The Coop in Layton.
- 7:48Speaker 2: We're doing a tasting there. The Kilns are.
- 7:51Speaker 1: All this month. You're going to be throwing some pox?
- 7:54Speaker 1: We're going to be making some wine glasses.
- 7:56Speaker 3: Okay.
- 7:57Speaker 2: No, the Kiln is the co-working space. It's a Utah-bred
- 8:01Speaker 2: organization that has expanded. You might have heard of WeWork,
- 8:06Speaker 2: that thing.
- 8:07Speaker 1: This is like that. Here in town called Kiln, it's
- 8:10Speaker 1: at the Gateway. There's also a brand new one in Holiday,
- 8:14Speaker 1: as well as in Lehigh. They're thirsty in Lehigh.
- 8:16Speaker 2: In Lehigh and at the Kiln.
- 8:18Speaker 3: So you can rent a little.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Rent-a-little, you can what's called a hot desk it, where
- 8:22Speaker 2: it's just this communal space, or you can have a
- 8:24Speaker 2: lock-and-keep code pass to then go into a private area.
- 8:28Speaker 2: And now there's two tiers there. You can have your
- 8:31Speaker 2: own desk, but it's kind of like in an office landscape.
- 8:33Speaker 2: So you might be working next to a guy you
- 8:35Speaker 2: don't know or a girl you don't know. And then
- 8:38Speaker 2: the next tier is a locked office. So you can
- 8:41Speaker 2: have an office in a space.
- 8:43Speaker 1: What kiln? Baking ideas together and entrepreneurs together. Do they
- 8:48Speaker 1: do food there too? So there is a few.
- 8:51Speaker 2: They have cafes, cafeteria kind of stuff, or a coffee.
- 8:54Speaker 2: So the Kiln at Gateway, great restaurant in there. And
- 8:59Speaker 2: this is the key. You can go to these events.
- 9:02Speaker 2: You don't have to just be a member. I'm an
- 9:04Speaker 2: added value service for the members of Kiln. But we
- 9:10Speaker 2: sell tickets through Eventbrite. for you also to come, experience
- 9:14Speaker 2: this great space, and have a wine thing with me.
- 9:18Speaker 1: What else do we have? Springville, Springhouse. Oh, Daybreak.
- 9:22Speaker 2: This is the 55-year-and-plus community. Springhouse Village at Daybreak. Oh,
- 9:28Speaker 2: that's residents only. You can't go.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Sorry.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Maybe residents are listening. That's right.
- 9:35Speaker 2: And we also do Daybreak, Daybreak, Daybreak, the larger facility,
- 9:39Speaker 2: I believe this month there. is uh and that's one
- 9:42Speaker 2: of my non-ticketed events that's kind of the privates that
- 9:44Speaker 2: we do and that is what is that uh candy
- 9:47Speaker 2: and wine wine and candy wine and candy pairing that's
- 9:50Speaker 2: gonna be fun neighborhood hive my favorite place in sugar
- 9:53Speaker 2: house uh neighborhood hive if you've not been there 2100
- 9:57Speaker 2: south 2100 east that's a really great space they brought
- 10:00Speaker 2: together not only the coffee shop, but other local, local,
- 10:04Speaker 2: local vendors together under the same roof.
- 10:07Speaker 1: We do our butcher paper tasting out there. That's a
- 10:09Speaker 1: lot of fun. And then my brand new one. We
- 10:11Speaker 1: were out there a few weeks ago at the Baseball Diamond.
- 10:15Speaker 2: This is Nomad at Daybreak.
- 10:18Speaker 1: So Nomad's also over here.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Over by, over where is that? Yeah, over up there.
- 10:24Speaker 1: And I was trying to think of the neighborhood. It's
- 10:27Speaker 1: a restaurant.
- 10:28Speaker 2: It's a restaurant. Great pizzas. Very talented chef. That's going
- 10:32Speaker 2: to be a good one. That's out at their daybreak location.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Beautiful facility. right next to the ballpark, ample parking.
- 10:41Speaker 3: And people can come to that event?
- 10:42Speaker 1: That one, yeah. All of them, but some of them. Yeah, yeah.
- 10:45Speaker 1: All of them except that one.
- 10:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:47Speaker 1: All right.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Wineacademyofutah.com is where you can find all of those listed.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Plenty of other information there. Jimmy Fantangelo.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Splishy, splashy, Jimmy. We're happy to have you here, and
- 11:02Speaker 3: now we'll say goodbye.
- 11:03Speaker 1: All right. Have a great day. Thanks, everybody. Thank you
- 11:06Speaker 1: very much.
