2- 2015 [laughs] [upbeat rock music]
• 0:27
Welcome to the super spooky Friday the 13th offering of the Weekly Dose of Fat. Time to carve up black cats with the broken mirrors while standing under a ladder when underneath the campgrounds.
• 0:44
While I get these things organized, let me introduce to you your camp counselors for this week, Sven and Gomez. Hey, welcome to the show, everybody. That's Kuba. [laughs] And I'm Gomez, your Tio Gomez. Hey.

Fat Bike Radio and the Weekly Dose of Fat is sponsored by the courteous individuals at Surly Bikes. Surly designs and produces versatile bikes, frames, and parts for people that ride legions. The heck's a legion?
• 1:28
Uh- They are many [laughs] The- thesaurus.com said it was, uh, a synonym for a lot. Oh, that's true. Many. Yes, many. Mm-hmm. Surly, bikes, parts, and chaos. Chaos, like in Get Smart. Legion more at surlybikes.com.
• 1:47
Hey, we've got a caller this week already. We do. Don't we, don't we give away a prize to the caller? Yeah, we have, we have a contest going for the first caller that can give us the secret word.
• 1:57
Hey, welcome to the radio program. You're caller number one. Do you know the- All right... do you know the secret word? I believe it is Gordon Lightfoot. Whoop, whoop, whoop- Yeah...
• 2:10
whoop, whoop, whoop, whoop, whoop, whoop. You did it. Right on. [laughs] That's, that's correct. Somehow we came up with that- All right... very skillfully last week. Who are we talking to?
• 2:19
[laughs] Uh, my name is Lauren. Hi, Lauren. Lauren, welcome to the show. Um, we're going to- How you guys doing? Oh, we're doing so good. I can't believe it. I am just out of my mind. I'm bl- so blissful.
• 2:33
I see him out of his mind. [laughs] JK and I are just, you know, having a good day. How about you, Sven? I- I'm d- doing as well as can be expected. Or should we call you Kuba? Kuba.
• 2:46
[laughs] So Lauren, you are the first Surly secret question big winner. We, uh, we've got some prizes we're gonna send to you.
• 2:57
Tell us, do you have, do you have any inkling to the answer of the question of the week, which is how, what are you doing to prep your gear for winter?
• 3:07
Well, I just took my fat bike out yesterday and got it super muddy, and so I- [laughs]... uh, learned how to bathe it. There's nothing like a mud bath- Mm. [laughs]... to get you ready for winter.
• 3:20
[laughs] Well- And other than that, just collecting cold weather gear. Nice. And what kind of fat bike do you have? So my husband and I just got Rocky Mountain Blizzards last week. Oh, very cool. I like that.
• 3:34
They'll, are, now, is it this year's model? It still has the- Um, mine is last year's- Uh-huh... and his is this year's. Oh, very cool.
• 3:44
Well, you guys enjoy yourselves, and, uh, you know, don't be a stranger, or don't get any stranger. But we're gonna hang you and move on to, uh... heck, I don't know.
• 3:55
We always get a- We gotta, we gotta tell people what's on the show this week, I think. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. So, uh, thanks for calling in. Yeah. And, uh, bye bye. Yeah. Thank you, guys, very much. Appreciate it.
• 4:07
All right, Lauren, thanks. Bye bye. Bye. All right, JK, please tell our listeners what we've got in store this week. Well, we start from the start, and we start the show with the event of the week, event of the week.
• 4:23
We welcome Mr. Eric Dahn of Peacock Groove to talk about his newest bike venture, something we like to call Cake Cycles. Cake. Cake. Bike.
• 4:37
We award the first caller, which we just did, that tells the secret fabulous prize package winner. [laughs] We're back to the future again, man. [laughs] We take ca- I just read what's in front of me.
• 4:52
[laughs] We take calls from our listeners and maybe, if we're lucky, learn something about winter preparedness.
• 4:58
Hey, we dazzle all 13 of our senses with the pure organic effervescence of the Fatty Farm Field Report, presented to you today by Moots Cycles. Oh, Moots Frosthammer, why are you so delicious?
• 5:14
It's time for the Fat Bike Event of the Week. JK, the Fat Bike Event of the Week is... The California State Fat Bike Championships on Saturday, December 12th,
• 5:30
cross country and downhill races at [laughs] Rim Nordic Bike Park near Running Springs, California, in the San Bernardino Mountains.
• 5:43
Yeah, they're hoping for snow, but, uh, they're gonna run it snow or dry dirt, snow or on dirt. But, uh, it sounds- Not red and blue? [laughs] It's a totally psychedelic event, and if you- Not red and blue, though...
• 5:58
if you click on the show notes, all of your details will come up on your computer mcthinger You know what time it is? Top of the hill. It's time, it's time to say hello to our friend [metal clangs] Evan Larson. Hello.
• 6:13
I can't believe I'm actually here. [laughs] And you can see what chaos you've brought to the studio, too. It's quite fantastic, guys. [laughs] Well, it's the top of the hill, boys. Cheers. Cheers. Skol. Clank.
• 6:26
[glasses clink] Evan stopped by. He's gonna be the Bike Black Ribbon test pilot that takes this beautiful Heller Bloodhound out for the next four to six weeks to, uh, make it happy and find out what she can do.
• 6:42
It's gonna make me happy. Yeah. How many, how many Gs she can pull. If you're, uh, excited to see a little bit about it before Evan whoops a fit on it, we did a quick video thing of it earlier today. Uh-huh.
• 6:54
It's Fred and Gomez, Fat Bike TV, the premier, uh, episode, so. For real? For real. [laughs] Yeah, that's my for real. Hey, let's take a quick break here before we talk to special guest Eric Norin from Peacock Groove.

• 7:55
[upbeat rock music] You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio. Hey, welcome back to the radio program, folks. We're looking for our friend Eric. Dónde está? Uh, yeah, that's me.
• 8:12
Dónde, dónde está. Eric, Eric's on the phone already, man. You see how I did that? Hey, please welcome to the radio program- No... from Mindy Applesauce, Mr. Eric Norin! Was that loud enough?
• 8:24
And now I'll do my radio announcer voice, too. [laughs] Stay tuned for City of the Love Connection back in two and two. Hey, Woolery. That wasn't as good as mine, sorry. [laughs] He said Woolery, the Woolery.
• 8:37
Oh, he did Chuck Woolery. You know, I'm, I'm calling back as, as somebody else- [laughs]... because I heard that that old dick Woolery or whatever his name is.
• 8:46
I'm gonna talk like that all night and bother [laughs] bother you guys. So are we live, or are you gonna get to edit out beeps and bloops and swears and, and strong concerns, as I like to call them?
• 8:56
Oh, no, we're gonna, we're gonna wing through this thing live. Yeah. But- We, we do this in one take... if it's real egregious, I guess I could make an effort to minimize the impact of the damage of your- [laughs]...
• 9:08
your chatter. [laughs] Yeah, well, you know what? Uh, I was gonna be an English major coming out of high school- Yeah... and people would say, "That's impossible. You swear too much."
• 9:18
And I'm like, "You know, it's like this. As a grammarian, one, you know, obsesses over structure of grammar and correct speaking. You know when people say, 'Can I get that?' 'I don't know. Can you?' Like, try, bro.
• 9:29
Try and get my Tootsie Pop from me, you know? It's the difference between can and may." Yeah, may I have that Tootsie Pop, please? So, I swear a lot. [laughs] Yeah, you- Okay, Eric Norin-... can get the Tootsie Pop...
• 9:39
with- Eric Norin, are you the- Eric, Eric, are you- Are, are you, are you my... The guy I'm looking in the mirror at? [laughs] Eric, Eric Norin, gonna talk grammar on a podcast. I- I was.
• 9:50
I, I, I tell you what- [laughs]... I was, but people say- [laughs]... I swear too much, but it's like this- Oh, dear lord... you're a bike mechanic at a, at a shop.
• 9:58
You know, the b- a lot of the bike mechanics back in the day, this is going back 20 years, they used to have some of the shittiest bikes out there.
• 10:05
You know, the chain stretched beyond, you know, anything, and it's dirty, and the brakes barely work. And people go, "You're a bike mechanic, you should take care of it."
• 10:13
And the general response was, "I work on bikes all day. The last thing I wanna do when I go home is work on my bike." Now, that's not every mechanic, but a lot that I've known.
• 10:22
So I know English, but sometimes swearing just really gets your point across. [laughs] So enjoy. [laughs] But wait, there's more. So English major and also the man behind Peacock Groove, Mr.
• 10:39
Eric Norin here, is, uh, gonna tell us a little bit about some big bike news with his new company, Cake Bikes. Yeah, tell us about the Cake. Everybody likes cake.
• 10:49
Seriously, even 50 Cent said, "I love you like a fat kid love cake." But that's not really, you know- [laughs]... politically correct, but who cares? But anyways, Cake, yeah. Basically, the idea of Cake came about,
• 11:02
um, through a, through a few years of traveling with Andy Tetmeyer from Hed and talking about bikes, and we'd go to NABs, go to the big bike show, and we'd have, you know, two days of traveling to sit in the van and talk about...
• 11:15
He doesn't really like talking about Star Wars, so you know, the first trip down [laughs] for two days, it was like, "Um, so you make wheels, huh?" [laughs] And we just started talking, and,
• 11:26
and we were talking about bike size fit and wheels and different wheel sizes. And, and what I came up with now, and I'll, I'll work it backwards, is Cake is 24-inch wheel fat bikes.
• 11:38
Now, uh, there's a couple other companies out there that are making 24-inch wheel fat bikes, like it's for kids. Well, my fucking bikes ain't for kids.
• 11:46
They're performance-oriented bikes that just happen to be 24-inch wheels. And in this whole game of everybody going bigger and fatter and plusser- Mm-hmm... I was like, "No, dude, shrunk and punk, this is where it's at."
• 11:58
[laughs] And the reason why I did it is 'cause- [laughs] When you see these people, these little, small people, these five-foot-even people on a 26-inch- I won't even say the name, but a big fat-tired bike. Mm-hmm.
• 12:11
It, it just looks ridiculous. You know? It looks like a chipmunk riding a whale, and that's just- [laughs]... not a good visual- Uh-huh... unless you're into chipmunks and whales.
• 12:20
So- I, I just got a- We were talking about it... I just got aroused. [laughs] Well, it's, it's your chub. But go ahead. One of your chubs back there. [laughs] You have an evil robot chubby.
• 12:29
But, so Andy and I would talk about this and be just like, "You know, there's gotta be a way." And then he just, like, it was like magic. We were driving down to, I don't even remember, it was one of the NABS shows.
• 12:40
Like, since I passenger, I don't really have to pay attention, and Andy drives, and then, like, when I drive, he just tells me to drive. It's, it's a great, it's a very, very good relationship.
• 12:49
But anyways, he said, "Dude, let's make a 24." And he said that there was one other company making a 24. So- Mm-hmm...
• 12:55
basically, we were starting- 'Cause I think probably at that time, the only other 24 was maybe that Framed 24. Believe it or not, it was a Specialized. Oh, yeah? Okay. Specialized got in the game quick. All right.
• 13:06
And- Yep, they had the kids bike out there... as far as I'm concerned, Spec- For sure, yeah. Yeah, if Specialized does it, it's gonna be a thing. You know what I mean?
• 13:12
Like, [laughs] you can complain and kick all you want, but it's legit now. So- Yeah, and in part, they- We talked about it...
• 13:19
they made the tires that made this even possible, 'cause nobody was making a halfway decent tire for a 24-inch bike. Correct, and, and that's the, like, the last hurdle that we have.
• 13:29
But w- when we talked about it, we're like, "Well, what could we do? What, what are, what are our goals? You know, what do we want?"
• 13:34
So we made a couple prototypes, and man, I shit you not, like, I've built bikes for over 20 years. Mm-hmm. I've ridden bikes for, I don't know, like 25,
• 13:44
and I haven't had much in the last few years that's really like, you know, made me excited and go, "Holy shit, this is awesome. We need to make these."
• 13:52
And when we got on the 24, like within two pedal strokes, you know, Andy just said, "Wow." And then I got on it, and I was like, "Oh, it can't be that cool." And I took two pedal strokes and went, "Wow."
• 14:02
[laughs] And like, we both had like the Joey Lawrence, "Whoa," you know- [laughs]... kind of experience. And I said, "Dude, we gotta make more," you know?
• 14:13
And the problem that I was incurring, or the problem that was coming to me is, you know, I make Peacock Grooves. I make one bike every two weeks, maybe three. Mm-hmm. I mean, I go really deep in on 'em. When people...
• 14:23
I, I just, I like making stupid, crazy art bikes or whatever you wanna call 'em, 'cause they can still be ridden.
• 14:29
But, you know, like, there's no structure for Peacock Groove, meaning that, like, there's no stock sizes, you know? We, there's... I mean, we just got a website after 14 years. Hold on, we're catching up.
• 14:37
But I was like, "You know what? I can't make enough Peacock Groove 24s." And I was like, "I'm gonna come up with a production company, a name, and just start making bikes, and if people like 'em, they'll buy 'em.
• 14:49
If they don't, they're just wrong." [laughs] But no, you know what I mean? It's, it's gonna be great for small people, because now that I've had a few small people on it, we built one for Andy Head. Mm-hmm.
• 14:58
She ordered one for her daughter. Andy, um, from Head ordered one for his daughter. And this isn't like, uh, I, I love saying this, it's not a gender specific bike, because I hate the whole shrink it and pink it thing.
• 15:12
Mm-hmm. I just, I can't stand that. It is lazy marketing, it's doing women a disservice, and it's just stupid. Like, seriously, when they're like, "Oh, look at it. It's pink with, you know, violet flowers," burn it.
• 15:23
Just run it over. It, it shouldn't live. It just should be whatever. But Take is gonna serve smaller riders and give them the fat bike experience that they deserve, and I'm telling you, they're fast, they're agile.
• 15:36
It's really a strange feeling, but what it made me remind riding on this and going home and riding just, and just, you know, passing your house and going for a couple more miles, it reminded me of, like, back in '96, riding a single speed and getting out there and not having a care in the world and just going down and roasting hot dogs and drinking beers and riding your bike around and being stupid, and then going, "Well, it's been 12 hours.
• 16:00
I should get home now. I gotta go to work tomorrow." [laughs] You know, but I don't have that problem. But, but you know what I mean?
• 16:06
It was like, it was like, holy cow, you got this feeling riding this thing and, and Andy Head loves it. She's like, "Holy cow." And I mean, Head's down with it. They're making the wheels.
• 16:16
They're gonna be available in, like, a month, and I'll probably let the, the cat out of the bag here, but I talk a lot, so a lot of useless shit comes out of my mouth, but every once in a while, there's a gem.
• 16:28
But they are gonna make carbon fiber version of these rims. So if you look at it like this, and trust me, I hate new standards and models and anything that complicates what I have to do, but this makes sense.
• 16:39
And if Specialized is doing it, Trek is doing it, OnOne now has one, Framed, you know, has one, uh, a couple small builders, Dave Wiseman, I believe, uh, Mr.
• 16:51
Kent Erickson is gonna make a couple, 'cause I hear things through the grapevine. So here's the deal. It's valid.
• 16:57
It's ready, and anyone who makes fun of me, they come to the shop and they're like, "Well, there's your little, little 24 bike," and I'm like, "Shut up. Go ride it." And they come back and they're like, "Holy shit."
• 17:06
I'm like, "Yeah. Yeah, where's your insults and your condescending tone now?" [laughs] So you take two pedal strokes on it, and it's a legitimate thing.
• 17:15
Well, I- And we're releasing it, uh, brand- I think that, that people need to be sensitive to the fact that, you know, being sh- being... I, I even came up with the term un-tall. Uh, you know, that
• 17:28
you're as tall as you, as you are, and you should ride a bike that's, that's proportional to however tall you've grown. It's not a contest to see who can- That's exactly what I've told people...
• 17:38
the, it's not a contest to see who can be the tallest. It's to see who can have the most fun on a bike. Who can be the longest. [laughs] Oh, man, well- But, but the whole-... you're, you guys know...
• 17:49
you've, you've spoken, uh, to a lot of very abstract things about how you love the way the bike rides, but the real, uh, the real numbers, and Andy I know is, is more of a, a left-brainer, more of an engineering type of, of brain.
• 18:06
For sure. Uh, and the fact that these 24-inch by four fat bikes have the same outer diameter as a 26 by- 2.1 mountain bike, you know, the, it just makes sense.
• 18:20
There is, uh, there's more than just the abstract feel of, of, of riding it, and the fact that other people are doing it. In fact, you are actually the only company that is doing it and is making it towards
• 18:38
the un-tall adult, as opposed to the semi-tall child, you know? So- Oh, man. [laughs] Let me tell you, it, you were right. It comes down to proportional sizing and proportional correctness.
• 18:50
And being the tall, five foot five, maybe, guy that I am, seeing people come in and they, you know, like, I said no to people, like, "I want a 29 or I want a 29 plus. I want a Krampus."
• 19:00
I'm like, "Dude, you're five foot three." [laughs] It's just not gonna work. "But I want one- It's just not gonna work... they ride so great."
• 19:07
And I'm like, "Dude, it's like putting in a four banger in a fucking Ram Charger. It's, yeah- [laughs]... it's gonna haul shit, yeah, but you're never gonna get anywhere. You're moving, you know, three tons of steel.
• 19:17
So you've gotta have it sized right, and sizing is a huge deal for me. And Andy was right. And he actually beat it in my head for about six months, maybe eight months before I was like, "Ugh-
• 19:28
All right, let's build one, Andy... okay, I'll make you one." And, and like, as I designed it, I was like, "I'm such an idiot. We should've been doing this a year ago," you know?
• 19:36
[laughs] And, and that's the thing is, like, there are enough bikes for tall people out there. You know, like, don't go all Leonard Zinn on me and be like, "Well, not for me." Well, yeah, you're seven foot four.
• 19:44
You're out of the, you're even out of the fucking tall spectrum, guy. [laughs] You know? Like, you're way out there. But for people who are- I'm five seven. I don't know how the hell [laughs]...
• 19:52
and, you know, women that are more petite- [laughs] I'm, I'm five ten and three quarters. Yeah, how tall are you guys over there, huh? He's bigger, he's bigger than my wheelhouse.
• 20:00
[laughs] I, I like to say I'm five eleven, but I'm five ten and three quarters. Oh, I'm sorry, five six- Yeah, yeah... and three quarters. Oh, boy. Not five seven. I might claim five nine on a good day.
• 20:09
[laughs] I was gonna say. So we're all just, just- Rounding up doesn't really help you, 'cause I- Yeah... I round it up at five five, so I'm massive.
• 20:16
But you know, when you see these people that, they want a fat bike, you know, and they wanna do this, and then they're, they're on a big old five-inch, you know, and they can't even stay up on it.
• 20:26
But it just, it makes so much sense. The short people here that have ridden it just love it.
• 20:32
And, and honestly, after being in the industry in various places for as long as I have been, I really believe that short people and women are underserved. And I just, I'm not saying I made a company to change that,
• 20:45
but it's gonna affect it, and you wait another year, maybe two, 'cause the industry's so fast to respond- Yeah, they-... they're gonna be like, "Dude, this is so smart. We'll do it. Oh, and KHS is doing it."
• 20:56
I met, um, one of the higher up guys- So you're gonna be the Walt Works of fricking 24-inch fat bikes, yo, something like that. KHS is gonna, I think it's gonna take off, and we're doing the brand, the brand launch.
• 21:10
Don't I sound so great? You know, I, I should be yelling and working the department store, but- Yeah, this is, this is what I wanted you to get to. So way to go. Way to be your own MC. Yeah, tell us about your opening.
• 21:19
December 5th, man, and it's World Fat Bike Day, Global Fat Bike Day, whatever you wanna call it. It's Fat Bike Day around this crust of sand floating around through the universe, and people are gonna ride bikes.
• 21:31
And I hear that you guys are coming up to de Minnesota's to check out, I believe it's the, um, Winter Bike Expo at Freewheel. So- Maybe. I thought, I thought your opening was next weekend, dude.
• 21:45
Yeah, it was supposed to be, but see how we haven't really released it yet? That's because we weren't sure, and my powder coater actually moved up, uh, the delivery date that he needed 'em by a week. Ah.
• 21:55
And I was like, "Dude, nobody ever moves forward a week." [laughs] You, I, you know, like, I can't get it done. I hear ya. It's not possible. So your opening is gonna be on Global Fat Bike Day. That is just...
• 22:06
Like, if I, if, if you don't mind the expression, wow, that's tits, as- It, it really is. [laughs] And it, it just makes sense, and I've learned, like,
• 22:16
you know, I'm not perfect on delivery, and to be honest, I'm, I'm not apologizing for it, but I do run my own company. I do everything. I'm still here, you know? I'm still at the shop.
• 22:26
I'm gonna hang up with you guys later, and I'm gonna go back to work till about, oh, I don't know, 11:00 or midnight, until I go, "I've got enough done. I can go home." Oh, shit, I gotta hang up.
• 22:33
You're preaching to the choir here. I gotta hang up. We're all on triple overtime. [laughs] Yeah, triple overtime. Triple overtime. So, uh, Eric- Oh, I'm on, I'm on quad... Eric, you add three Floyds.
• 22:44
[laughs] I just wanted to touch on the fact that, you know, peacock, Peacock Groove's been around for a long time, and, and, and you had said that those are all one-off, uh, you know, very labor-intensive bikes, where I think, uh, maybe people didn't quite catch the drift that Cake is gonna be a little bit more of a production-oriented company- Cool...
• 23:01
to, to make these 24-inch fat bikes. Is that kinda how you see it? Yeah. That's where it... 'Cause what I thought was like, I love making Peacock Grooves. I do.
• 23:11
I mean, I just got an '80s Haro Freestyle bike that the guy wants me to make a 26-inch fat bike that looks like that, and I'm like, "Oh, man."
• 23:18
It's, it's so awesome to be creative, not just with the frame, but with parts, and I love doing that. But honestly, at the end of the day, it's, it's very hard to make a living. It is very hard.
• 23:30
I mean, my rent is, quote, unquote, "X amount" every month, whether I sell a bike or not. And if I don't, you know, shit, it might as well be a million dollars 'cause I can't get it.
• 23:40
So there's all this trouble in building Peacock Groove and doing what I do, and I don't have anything subsidizing me, and I was like, "Holy shit, Cake." You know?
• 23:50
And it, it hit me, and I was like, "We'll just do production bikes," and, and that's it. And our first batch is gonna be 30, and we're gonna be about half deep December 5th.
• 24:01
And at our party, you can come and actually ride them. The sizes that we have are 11-inch, 13, 15, 17, and 19. And that should fit pretty much everybody, except for the Leonard Zinns of the world that are super tall.
• 24:14
But I mean, it's a little 11-inch bike, and the thing is- You should really come up with some names like, uh, Starbucks use. Like, call 'em, like, a venti and a- That's super petite and, uh- Yeah, that's really-...
• 24:27
I like girls that are-... working out so well right now. [laughs] Merry Christmas? Is that what I should call them? Yeah.
• 24:34
We can, we can, we could have a, we could have a focus group- Figure we'd go with a different example... about it. Oh, well, I'd start, I'd use Starbucks. [laughs] Starbucks.
• 24:42
They're, they're in trouble for something now, right? You know, the funny thing is, is because I don't have model names for Peacock Grooves. They're just bikes, 'cause, you know, they're bikes.
• 24:51
Right, 'cause they're one-off custom bikes, but yeah And I've thought long and hard about it. It's, it's a custom bike, you know, what are you gonna call it? You know, road bike. Oh, no, it's a gravel bike, dude.
• 24:58
It can handle bigger, bigger than dirt roads. I don't know, Moonlander just num- gives them numbers, like #M001. Moonmen, not Moonlander. Moonmen, not Moonlander. Moonmen.
• 25:08
I have the Moonlander man job all, full time- Yeah. Yeah, you do... all the time. I do Moonlander on my mind. Yeah. So, Eric- Oh...
• 25:15
um, w- when you talked about the sizing of the frames, your, your, uh, your largest frame is a 19-inch. What, where do you see the 24-inch benefiting?
• 25:23
I mean, we, we know the shorter stature people, that's an obvious end, but what about on the, the more, uh, you know, the upper end of the, of the frame sizing?
• 25:34
Well, I tell people that so far my theory and hypothesis that if you're, like, 5'7" and under, they're gonna be great bikes. If you're 5'7" and over, they're pretty good bikes.
• 25:46
So you're gonna win either way, but it is just, like, hearkening back to the days of, like, performance-oriented, rigid, single-speed, 26-inch wheel bikes.
• 25:55
You know, it's the same overall diameter, but the wheel feel is completely different.
• 25:59
It's, it's really crazy and, and I don't always have all the words or the science engineering terms, uh, you know, like, spit it out and make it sound interesting. Oh, he's doing Ricky from Trailer Park Boys.
• 26:08
Yeah, he's only riding- He's talking about the wordy words. [laughs] I'm not- The wordy words... I'm not good with the wordy words, but, uh- These are my, my dictionary.
• 26:16
[laughs] And so, I mean, it'll be good, but it's just that's what we're doing for the focus group is to have that- Gomez says, "Go to fuck me off land." [laughs] [laughs] He's gonna have a stroke over there.
• 26:29
Out there right now. Don't have a, don't have a stroke online. I'll be upset, like, back down to baby.
• 26:33
So dude, it looks, it looks like, it looks like I'm gonna have to come to Minneapolis and go to your gala opening, and I fucking want a polar bear on a big gold chain, and a red carpet- We can do that...
• 26:47
and maybe, I don't know. If you can do that shit, I am your Huckleberry. I will be there. Well, we'll, we'll roll out the polar bear carpet for you if you come by the shop. [laughs] And it would be great. The Wampa.
• 26:57
I need a Wampa carpet. Wampa. Oh, dude, you have no idea what's coming for NABS, trust me. Yeah. But, uh- You, you said the, you said the, you said the Star Wars shit. Uh, the Wampa. There it is.
• 27:09
Well, you know, I was gonna do it last year, but it came down to we couldn't get it all done, do the painter and painted in time, 'cause it's in... it, it, it was very involved.
• 27:18
So now it's, they're just gonna be there at NABS this year, and I'm trying to br- you know, get Cake in there, and it's- Out in Sacramento... it's like, it's, they're- Cake, the wine?... they're gonna be in the booth.
• 27:27
Yeah. You know, but I don't know if we'll have our own, Cake will have its own booth. But like- Yeah... and I just wanted to let everyone know here now that Cake is always only gonna be 24-inch wheeled fat bikes.
• 27:40
We're not gonna come out next year with a cross bike, or a gravel road bike, or a dirt road bike, or a road road bike, or a crit bike. It's just 24-inch wheel fat bikes. And coaster brake bikes.
• 27:50
We're gonna specialize in it. [laughs] No, just kidding, only 24-inch bikes. And pretty much, you know, it, it's all about the inches, you know?
• 27:57
So I'm, I mean, I'm really psyched about it, and psyched to talk to you guys about it. I'm psyched to, like, we're gonna debut this on December 5th, Global Fat Bike Day. Like, what?
• 28:07
And, and the beauty of it is we had, I don't wanna say a competitor, and I know people say you shouldn't talk shit, 'cause it'll come back to haunt you. Uh-oh, here it comes. Well- [laughs] Here it comes. Beep, beep...
• 28:16
someone from a, a rival company- Yeah... came in here, and I don't really like certain people in the shop, because they get a lot of ideas. Yeah. 'Cause they have no imagination themselves, themselves.
• 28:27
And they're like, "What is this? I want need to know more about it." And I go, "No, you don't." And they're like, "I need to know." Uh, 'cause, you know, we couldn't... And I go, "Well, I'll tell you what.
• 28:35
You're at least two years behind me, so fuck off." And that may have stressed my relationship, but here's the deal, man. I don't have a big company subsidizing me.
• 28:45
I don't have a rich wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, aunt, uncle, parents. Me neither. I get by. [laughs] So, well, "Hey, Billy, would you like to be adopted?" "No, thank you." I mean, I'm not rich, but we could pretend.
• 28:56
But you know, like, I, I am a real frame builder. What I do pays my bills. I mean, I did two repairs a day. I straightened out a fork that UPS, I swear to God, they threw the, the apocalypse anvil at it.
• 29:09
I don't know what they did, but I, uh, helped out a couple guys at Shimano, so that was cool. And I mean, what I do, I'm a frame builder, and I repair frames and work on frames, and that's how I make my money.
• 29:21
So I took everything that I thought I had, I even sold a couple bikes, or a bike, pardon me, to get all the stuff I needed to have five complete bikes ready for people to try. Mm, cool. Boom.
• 29:33
You can just come in, give me your license and a credit card, 'cause I sure as hell ain't letting you ride off into the sunset with shame, you know, and a damn bike that I- [laughs]... worked my ass off for, you know?
• 29:42
So December 5th- So-... people can go to your shop, and, uh, we'll put a link in the show notes of will it be listed on the Peacock Groove site, or how do people find out more information about this? Oh, maybe.
• 29:55
If, if I can get around to it. I mean, Cake has a, a Facebook page, and so does Peacock Groove. Peacock Groove finally has- Okay... after 14 years- All right. So you can-... we have our own website.
• 30:04
And it's not all that great, but- We'll, we'll just, we'll just hope- Well, but it is-... that people can, can search and, and find, find where they need to go. But we actually have- Yeah.
• 30:13
Hopefully- We have a ton of other stuff to get to in the show. You have been a fabulous guest. Okay. You have been, uh- Oh, thank you... you have been verbose times, I don't know, t- to the power of grace, Cole.
• 30:24
Wouldn't you all agree, boys? It's the power of Grayskull... Grayskull. Oh my God. Eric Norin, you- Power of Grayskull, man.
• 30:31
I'm gonna go pick up She-Ra and we're gonna go punch Orco and we are getting the hell out of here. That's- [laughs] There you are. There you are.
• 30:37
So I'm actually- So I'll see you on December 5th or a reasonable facsimile thereof. Perfect. Gentlemen, thank you for the opportunity, and have a hell of a night. All right, Eric. All right. We'll see you, Eric.
• 30:47
Thanks very much. Take care. Have a good one. All right. See you. See you. Hey, that was Eric Norin from Peacock Groove and Cake Bicycles. Indeed. Let's take a quick break, maybe get some sponsors to pay some bills.
• 31:03
Yeah. And, uh, we'll be back right after this. Yeah. [upbeat music] What do Heather Best, Kevin Brightonbach, and Jeff Whoately have in common?
• 31:12
Well, they're all world record holders and champions of the Iditarod Trail Invitational, and they all chose Becker Frame Bags and Hydration Packs for their championship run.
• 31:23
Becker Gear's custom designed and purpose-built to fit your bike. Fat, skinny, and everything in between, Becker Gear is the bag maker of champions. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio.
• 31:42
Hey, everybody. We're back, and we're taking calls right away. We, we, we got a whole bunch of stuff to do, but we got callers, so we, why don't we talk to these folks. How's it going? Hey, this is Gordon Lightfoot.
• 31:57
[laughs] You guys are using my name and you owe me royalties. [laughs] You don't sound Canadian and Navajo-ish. Is that right? [laughs] We all know it's Travis. Yes, it is Travis, man. How you guys doing?
• 32:13
[laughs] Dude, the, the, the last line from that contest was, "Fatbike.com, Fatbike.commies, uh, bike park urban test pilots, and fatbassadors cannot win." Fatbassadors.
• 32:29
So- Yeah, yeah, we already had a winner, like- Yeah... I think she was on the phone at 8:00 sharp. Lauren. Yeah, it was amazing. Lauren from Colorado. I called in early and I got snaked by a first-time caller.
• 32:42
Long-time listener. [laughs] First-time caller, long-time listener. How you guys doing? [laughs] Hey, welcome to radio program, everybody. Yeah. Well, it's been- So, Travis-... having all night long. It's been a hoot...
• 32:52
you guys got snow, didn't you? Yeah. We're in the white stuff. It's absolutely awesome, man. Had a great night ride last night, snowing lightly, about four or five inches down, nice and packed out. Yeah, we are on snow.
• 33:09
Sweet. Well, it's nighttime there, pretty much, uh, after what? About 4:00 or 2:00? [laughs] When does the- Yeah, the headlines go on- I don't know. I just-... uh, at like 4:30... oh, okay. Well, that's not bad.
• 33:22
It's not that much different than here. I just watched the movie Insomnia and I, frightens me. [laughs] We're gonna make you go. Well, no, it's, uh, Al Pacino and Robin Williams going fucking crazy each other.
• 33:37
'Cause of the darkness. Oh. Or is it the light? The lightness. Oh, the lightness. Yeah. [laughs] Oh, right. Right. It's light for too long for those guys. So what's new, Travis?
• 33:46
Oh, yeah, by the- What are you doing to, uh, what are you doing to get your gear ready for winter, since it's already winter where you're at? Yeah, I, uh, pretty much just put the Dillinger studded fives on. Yeah.
• 34:02
So- And that was, uh, a- after, you know, making the mistake of going out with my ground controls on the first snow and almost pile driving my face into a tree. So, uh, that's, that's about it.
• 34:14
You know, I guess, yeah, you said threw the pogies on, frame bag, and, uh, started layering up. So did that, uh, did that Bluto give you a bunch of confidence, or have you switched over to a rigid fork for winter?
• 34:26
You know, I'm still checking it out, and at this point, you know, we're just starting to get the snow, so there's still some pretty rough spots, uh, in the trail. Mm-hmm. Rooty kind of stuff.
• 34:38
And, uh, so yeah, Bluto's working great. I was kinda wo- questioning whether or not I'd wanna keep it on throughout the winter. Figured I'd give it a try, and I can, yeah, for early winter stuff, it's great.
• 34:49
So how much travel are you running on your Bluto? Uh, 100. Nice. 100. Right in the middle there. 100. So you were hanging out for most of the call with Mr. Eric Norin from Peacock Groove.
• 35:01
What do you, what do you think of the 24-inch, uh, fat bike [laughs] for un-tall people? I think it's awesome. Yeah. You can have your cake and eat it, too. Oh, Lordy. Hey, I think he has a new tagline. [laughs] I know.
• 35:14
[laughs] So could you make, did you make any sense out of, out of that whole thing? Lord, he went- Uh, yeah. I was fo- I was following it, man. Yeah. He was hilarious.
• 35:25
I was listening like, JK was, like, trying to hi- uh, he, I think he thought I was sleeping or something. Yeah. No, he's just absorbing life. Well, no, you were listening to your shit, man.
• 35:32
I was, like, list- listening intently, waiting for a moment when I could get a word in, but- Oh, yeah... all right... you're always the guy that's gotta be talking all the time. I know. See? Now you got a rival. Please.
• 35:42
Oh. [laughs] Maybe that was it. Maybe that was it. [laughs] I was sitting over here pouting, and then I finally got to talk, and everything's fine now. So now it's your turn to talk. You- [laughs] All right.
• 35:57
There's a beer stop top of the hill. Oh, wait. We're, we're stopping for beers. Okay. JK's getting beer. Hey, Travis, hang on for a little bit. We got another caller. Oh.
• 36:05
We're gonna, we're gonna bring some more chaos to the, uh- Oh, man... to the organization here. Let's go. Welcome to the radio program. Who do we have on the line? This is Dominic, your Fat Bastard from Columbus, Ohio.
• 36:21
Dominic. Hey, Dominic. What's going on, bro? You might be, you might remember me by the steak knives. Oh, nice. Yeah. Third place. I totally, I totally remember. [laughs] Third place. We should just call you Steak Knife.
• 36:35
That would be like- Hey, I will accept that as a nickname... yeah, 'cause you're a knife. That's- Yeah, I will accept that as a nickname... that's way better than being a fucking spoon [laughs]
• 36:44
You can call me- Or a spork Well- I- This is true. Yeah... this is true As, as silverware goes- Bacon knife works for me... steak knife's pretty kickass.
• 36:50
But sporks go through the enchiritas at Taco Bell, but that's, that's just on me. [laughs] I actually, I actually did have Taco Bell for dinner, so I'm- Mm... I'm good to go. Um [laughs] [laughs]
• 37:05
Um- Indeed, no pun intended... I, I was listening to the, uh, show, uh- Mm-hmm... Eric from- Mm-hmm... Peacock and Cake. Yeah. That guy is cool. I like him. Good for the short people. Cool. Right on.
• 37:17
Well, I was a little worried that, you know, he was, uh, you know, my, my vision was going pl- [laughs] in plaid and paisley and it just must have been one of those acid flashbacks that they kept on promising me in middle school.
• 37:29
[laughs] No, it was just a fever dream. Just a fever dream. [laughs] That's right. [laughs] Well, I was, I was checking out his website that he said was just kinda basic and everything, and it is really cool.
• 37:41
Um, there is a bike on there that has a front disc wheel with, like, Evil Dead II on it. Oh, yeah. He, he does- That in itself-... some real trippy disc wheel art and stuff. Yeah. Yeah.
• 37:54
He's, he's an artist as well as a technically a good frame builder, for sure. Yeah. So, uh- Oh, yeah, he, he's the kinda guy that makes me wanna get into welding of course. [laughs] Oh, cool.
• 38:06
So, uh, do you have an answer for our question of the week? Do you have some flavor from Ohio to share? Well, we don't have any snow yet, of course. Uh,
• 38:20
but it was about 34 degrees this morning, so, uh, I had myself, got myself a set of Dillinger 5s this weekend and I threw it on the bike and they don't slow me down as much as I thought they would, which is awesome.
• 38:31
No, they're a great rolling tire. Um- I, I love Dillinger 5s. Oh. Yeah, I got the, uh, Dave's Mud Shovels on there to keep my ass from getting soggy. Nice. And, uh, threw my, uh, bar mitts on this morning too.
• 38:47
Did you go for the studded version or the unstudded? I have the non-studded version because the studded version was a little tiny bit more out of my price range.
• 38:57
Well, what I found, because the tires- I, I'm about [laughs]
• 39:01
I was gonna say, 'cause the, you know, the tire is, is such a large tire that I bought the unstudded ones as well and then got enough studs to do about half of what they put on from the factory, and they work great.
• 39:13
On ice it's almost like being on gravel. All right.
• 39:14
You got enough, you got enough traction to have fun, but you can still break it loose a little bit and, uh, you know, it just sorta slows your, your going down if you're going down. [laughs] Well, yeah. Yeah.
• 39:28
I mean, I've, I've got clipless pedals on that thing, and I've, I've ended up on my ass a couple times- Eh... so it's nothing to care about. Man, that was Dominic, ladies and gentlemen. [laughs] Yeah.
• 39:39
Winter time, winter time the, the platforms should go on, dude, especially when it's icy. Well, yeah, like I said- But you said you don't have snow, so-... it's not snowing yet. Yeah. Right, right. Yeah. Yeah. All right.
• 39:50
All right. So then I was- Yeah. I was, uh- Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah... JK's, JK's nuts. [laughs] I don't know what. Just imagining. [laughs] But you can wind them up, but you can't take them off.
• 40:02
Tell me you, tell me all you want, but I'm used to them. I will be taking them off when it starts snowing, don't worry. [laughs] Um, but I have a question for you. We were worried about your health.
• 40:10
About- I'm just flats all of them. Yeah. Everyone likes it.
• 40:13
[laughs] I, I, I, I, I do clips and- It's just fucking- I do clips sometimes, then I do flats other times, and then there's the other times- Clips doesn't make sense... where I'm- Words, words don't make sense...
• 40:23
yeah, they have a clip, but yet they're clipless. Wait a second. [laughs] I like to call them bike bindings. [laughs] Not clipless. Yeah. Well, it is kind of a bike binding kinda thing. [laughs] Sure. Not less.
• 40:37
Yeah, I- That's more... have come to find out that clipless pedals are kind of like a, uh, involuntary suicide pact. The bike says, "If I'm going down, I'm taking you with me." Pedal more. It's amazing, though.
• 40:48
You launch- I have pedal mores... when you launch over the bars, it, you unclip, dude, 90% of the time. Ah! 90. [laughs] I had cages. I had cages when I went over the damn fucking bars, and that sucked balls.
• 41:01
That sucked. [laughs] JK is en fuego this evening. [laughs] He is. [laughs] That's what I'm here for. [laughs] The sound of a heart attack is in my ears. So I, I just wanna say I, I wanna thank you guys for, uh,
• 41:19
kind of getting me really into the whole fat bike thing. I had thought about it, and then I found your podcast and I went full in. [laughs] Wow. Just don't go over the bars, man.
• 41:31
[laughs] And I really regret not having met you guys when I lived in Milwaukee. Oh, what a- what address are we gonna send the check to again?
• 41:36
[laughs] Well, we, we appreciate that, man, and, you know, it, all we do is just, you know, drink beer and, and ride bikes and talk about it, so, you know. I, pretty much anybody could do this job. It's all we got.
• 41:50
Happy- [laughs] And you know what? Doing- And, and they're trying. I, we had- Doing this show is a hell of a lot of fun. We, we really do have fun here. It's, it's- Look how much fun Evan's having over there.
• 41:59
[laughs] [laughs] Look at him! Look at him having fun. [laughs] So no, you brought up Evan. I'm having fun, right? I was, we're gonna put Evan- Well, just keep laughing...
• 42:08
we're gonna put Evan on the spot- You can snort... and we're gonna ask him what he's doing to get his gear ready for winter. [laughs] Uh, first I gotta find it. [laughs] That's what I was saying. Finding it.
• 42:21
I got a milk crate somewhere with, with all my stuff, and, uh, probably get rid of the single speed, go back to the one by 10. Mm-hmm. Uh, I've still got the Nards I've been running since last year, so
• 42:35
I'm gonna probably just keep them on 'cause they worked good last year. Yeah. Uh- I think we should probably get you some tires, some other tires to try though, just for variety. I'm okay with that.
• 42:48
[laughs] I would, I would, I would appreciate it. All right. Speaking- Speaking, speaking of tires, didn't we send some tires down to Old Bear? Yeah, we did.
• 42:56
I sent him a, uh, Snowshoe XL for the front and a H Billy for the rear. So, and some, couple of T-shirts- That's nice of you... and some stickers, some patches.
• 43:08
Hey, just a shout-out to Old Bear, 'cause he did hang on the line- Old Bear... for about 35 minutes while we were doing our other thing, and- Oh, really? Maybe he'll- Oh...
• 43:15
maybe he'll call back before the end of the show. Well, he'll call back, for sure. He's our buddy. So, uh, who do we all have listening now? We got Travis. Mr. Conductor. And Dominic.
• 43:28
And JK with his bottle on the goddamn table. [laughs] Right there, sir. Jesus. [laughs] Oh, that's a severe scolding. [laughs] As scoldings go here in the radio studio, that was rather severe.
• 43:43
Did you see his eye brow go up? [laughs] I just turned his microphone off. [laughs] Ay caramba. That's, that's the first, that's the first time we've ever had the mic turned off. You, you... Oh, you're back.
• 43:59
Why is this so hard? [laughs] Hey, you know what? Old Cuba. We, uh, we just drifted into the- Oh... Fatty Farm Field Report. Oh, wait- Report, report, report... before we do that- Before we do that...
• 44:13
let's put our pants... [laughs] Hey, wait, hey. Hey, wait. Hey. Uh- What's the next week's call-in question, JK? I don't know. [laughs] I do. Well, no, I'm in a different land here.
• 44:30
[laughs] Do you want me to tell you? I'm in a different land. Oh my God. [laughs] [laughs] All right. Okay, next week's call-in question is- Ah... tell us about your first time on a fatty. On a fatty. A fatty.
• 44:47
Call in next Wednesday. Well, that's more of a, that's more of a statement than a question. What do you remember from your first time on a fatty? Yeah, well, you know- And we're talking bikes here. Yeah. Come on now.
• 44:57
Let's not get too technical. I can tell you- Don't... it's a question of the week whether it's a poem or whether it's a sonnet, you know? If we want you to just make fart noises one day with your, with your armpit,
• 45:10
it's still- [laughs] It's still the question of the week. All right. So, and you know, all you have to do is call in next Wednesday from 8:00 to 9:00 Central Time at 818-918-2453, and then we can talk about it. Yes.
• 45:25
You might even know about the fricking secret word. Should we just jump all over... Uh, w- now we're fucking for sure in the Fatty Farm Field Report, goddammit. Are you sure? [laughs] Are you f- sure?
• 45:41
I'm- You're the stupid-... so sure. You know what? This week's Fatty, Fatty Farm, Fatty Flay, Flay, is brought to you by Moots. Flava- Or presented by Moots. The Flava Flav Report? Yeah.
• 45:52
The Flava Flav Report, presented by Moots. Oh, Frosthammer, why are you so delicious? Well, here's the thing. Uncle Dick blew us off for about the fifth week in a row now- Well, damn...
• 46:02
'cause he's still working on his house. So- We still love you though, Uncle Dick... we, we wanted to go ahead and get somebody else up there, and Moots stepped right up to the plate. Yeah.
• 46:11
Check out the new Frosthammer at Moots dot com. That's all right, Rich. We still think you aight. So, uh, what are we gonna do about secret word this week? It's- I-... gonna be G. Gordon Liddy.
• 46:26
[laughs] No, that was from last week. It was Gordon Lightfoot- That's Gordon Lightfoot... not G. Gordon Liddy. Let's do our porn- Didn't know. Let's- Put that shit in, man, for me...
• 46:33
let, let's do our porn names, and then we'll d- do all three, and then we'll pick one of them- Max Thrust... and then... [laughs] Well, there's Max Thrust. I'm Reno Walter. Mine's Ginger Gillespie.
• 46:49
