- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland. Two people in Newfoundland are facing $ 4, 000
- 0:09Speaker 2: fines for endangering the safety of an airline flight when
- 0:13Speaker 2: they refuse to stay in their seats. A court in
- 0:16Speaker 2: Cornerbrook heard that Corey Panzer and Deborah Bojman were aboard
- 0:20Speaker 2: a Flair Airlines flight headed to Deer Lake on August 28, 2024.
- 0:25Speaker 2: The provincial court judge says Panzer and Bojman were yelling
- 0:28Speaker 2: at passengers and crew while partially undressing and failing to
- 0:32Speaker 2: follow airplane safety instructions. Both pleaded guilty to endangering the
- 0:37Speaker 2: safety of an aircraft in flight and interfering with the
- 0:41Speaker 2: lawful use of property. the long-awaited core staffing review for
- 0:45Speaker 2: Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services has been released. Richard Duggan reports.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Government says the review assesses the minimum levels and skill
- 0:54Speaker 3: mix needed to meet patient care needs. The review includes
- 0:58Speaker 3: a study of staffing models for nurse practitioners, registered nurses,
- 1:01Speaker 3: licensed practical nurses, and personal care attendants across six sites,
- 1:05Speaker 3: as well as a guide to inform the evaluation of
- 1:08Speaker 3: other NLHS sites. The report includes 21 recommendations in four areas,
- 1:13Speaker 3: Those are enabling staff to work to full value, stabilizing
- 1:17Speaker 3: and sustaining core staffing, transitioning from reactive to evidence-based forecasted staffing,
- 1:22Speaker 3: and reducing the structural load on staffing. Health Minister Jody
- 1:26Speaker 3: Wall says government is working through the recommendations now and
- 1:29Speaker 3: speaking with the unions that represent workers. He addresses concerns
- 1:33Speaker 3: raised last week by CUPE President Sherry Hillier, who says
- 1:36Speaker 3: she is deeply concerned about some of the proposed changes.
- 1:38Speaker 4: It was in the media earlier this week with respect
- 1:40Speaker 4: to what was thought was a downloading of extra work
- 1:43Speaker 4: onto certain workers. That is not the case. We want
- 1:45Speaker 4: to make sure that workers are worked to their full potential,
- 1:47Speaker 4: and we also have to make sure that we have
- 1:49Speaker 4: the proper number of workers in each classification.
- 1:51Speaker 3: The review can be read through a link online at vocm.com.
- 1:56Speaker 2: More affordability measures are set to come in the next
- 1:59Speaker 2: few days, but exactly what will be announced is still unknown.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Finance Minister Craig Party has announced about $ 79 million over
- 2:08Speaker 2: the past week with money to help with home heating
- 2:11Speaker 2: and gasoline. Party says the next announcement will be more
- 2:14Speaker 2: targeted and will be at least another $ 20 million.
- 2:18Speaker 5: Well, we know we have two more coming that I
- 2:20Speaker 5: think are substantive. So I think when you add that
- 2:23Speaker 5: on to what the $ 79 million that we're talking about,
- 2:25Speaker 5: we're We're up there in excess of $ 100 million that
- 2:30Speaker 5: will come out in this envelope. And keep in mind,
- 2:35Speaker 5: that is something that is fluid, that next month, the
- 2:38Speaker 5: month after, we get to reevaluate what we got.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Government is currently using an 80-20 model to cover its debts,
- 2:44Speaker 2: but party says that number could drop to as low
- 2:47Speaker 2: as 16% if its windfall continues. Those picking up their
- 2:52Speaker 2: Halloween candy may have noticed they're paying a lot more
- 2:57Speaker 2: for a lot less. Sylvain Charlebois of Dalhousie's Food Analytics
- 3:01Speaker 2: Lab says chocolate is expensive because most of the bars
- 3:04Speaker 2: on the market today were produced when cocoa prices were
- 3:07Speaker 2: very high.
- 3:08Speaker 1: The biggest factor right now affecting the commodity market right
- 3:12Speaker 1: now is the super El Nino cycle. Wheat is up
- 3:16Speaker 1: almost 50 percent. Rice is up 30 percent. Sugar is
- 3:21Speaker 1: also more expensive. That's the real factor impacting prices for
- 3:25Speaker 1: inputs right now.
- 3:27Speaker 2: MHAs were wearing their poppies in the House of Assembly yesterday.
- 3:30Speaker 2: And if you thought that it was a bit earlier
- 3:33Speaker 2: than usual, you'd be right. The Royal Canadian Legion has
- 3:36Speaker 2: begun its annual Poppy Campaign, which from this point onwards
- 3:40Speaker 2: will begin each October 24th. Starting this year, the Legion
- 3:44Speaker 2: chose to set a fixed date for the annual campaign
- 3:46Speaker 2: about a week earlier than usual to help with fundraising.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Funds raised through the Poppy Campaign go to support veterans
- 3:53Speaker 2: and the Legion's veterans programs. Olivia Chow has won a
- 3:58Speaker 2: full four-year term as Toronto's mayor, defeating Brad Bradford and
- 4:02Speaker 2: earning another mandate for her progressive agenda. Chow maintained a
- 4:06Speaker 2: strong lead as results came in, despite late polls suggesting
- 4:10Speaker 2: Bradford made the contest much closer. She campaigned on her
- 4:14Speaker 2: record of renter protections, changes to expressway funding, and shorter
- 4:19Speaker 2: 911 wait times, while promising more affordable housing and lower
- 4:23Speaker 2: transit costs. One of two pilot whales that beached at
- 4:27Speaker 2: Point May on the Burren Peninsula on the weekend succumbed
- 4:30Speaker 2: following the ordeal. Mayor Darren Harris says residents jumped into
- 4:35Speaker 2: action when the two animals, a male and a female,
- 4:37Speaker 2: came ashore and got stranded on the beach on Sunday.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Residents came out to try and help the whales, and
- 4:43Speaker 2: Harris brought out his excavator to cut channels, allowing the
- 4:47Speaker 2: animals to get back in the water. Unfortunately, says Harris,
- 4:51Speaker 2: despite those efforts, the female did not survive. That's your news.
- 4:55Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland.
