- 0:21Jess: Welcome back to The Pixie Garden Hair Podcast. I'm Jess with Delena Markland. Delena, I have friends with pixie cuts and friends with fine hair, and they say the same thing. It looks great for twenty minutes and then it lies flat on their head.
- 0:36Delena: Every one of those people gets the Magic Texture Comb from me, and it is seven dollars and fifty cents, so I do not feel bad about it. Here is the problem in one sentence: volume you build with your fingers has nothing underneath holding it up. You lift it, it looks great, gravity wins by the time you get to the car. The comb builds a base at the root that actually stays.
- 0:57Jess: What is it, physically? Is it just a teasing comb?
- 1:00Delena: It is a small comb with three rows of teeth, so when you push it toward the scalp it creates a cushion of hair at the root in one pass instead of the twenty passes you would do with a rat tail comb. And because the teeth are short and there are three rows, it is not shredding the hair the way old-fashioned backcombing does. That is why I put it in the hands of fine-haired clients, who cannot afford breakage.
- 1:25Jess: Walk me through the actual sequence, because I feel like this is where people get it wrong.
- 1:30Delena: They do, and the order matters more than the product. Step one, dry the hair completely. Not damp, not warm. Dry. Step two, dust a texture powder on top of the hair, on the surface, where you want the lift. Step three, and this is the one everyone skips, work the powder in with your hand. Rub it into the roots with your fingertips. Step four, now you take the comb to the roots and push toward the scalp in two or three short strokes per section. Then lay the top layer back over it and you are done.
- 2:05Jess: Why the hand before the comb? I would have gone straight to the comb.
- 2:09Delena: Because the powder is what gives the hair grip, and the comb is what shapes it. If you comb first, you are teasing slippery hair and it falls out in an hour. If you powder and go straight to the comb without working it in, you get a clump of powder at the top and nothing at the root. Hand first spreads the grip down to where the comb is going to work. Powder, hand, comb. I have had clients tell me that order alone fixed it.
- 2:35Jess: Where on the head?
- 2:37Delena: On a pixie, the crown and right behind the front section, where the hair is going to sit up. On longer fine hair, the crown and either side of the part. Two or three sections, that is all. This is not a whole-head tease. If you tease the whole head you look like it is prom night in the eighties, and I did those, so I know.
- 2:59Jess: How does it not look messy? Teased hair usually looks teased.
- 3:03Delena: The top layer covers it. You are building a little scaffold underneath and laying the smooth hair back over the top. From the outside nobody sees a tease. They see hair that stands up on its own. And then the last thirty seconds is the Hair Finishing Stick along the edges, the hairline, the sideburn area on a pixie, anywhere a short piece is sticking out sideways instead of up. It is a water-based gel in a wand, no alcohol in it, so it smooths the edge without drying it out or making it stiff. The comb makes the lift, the stick cleans up the border.
- 3:38Jess: A lot of your clients have asked about rollers for volume. Is this instead of rollers?
- 3:44Delena: It is what I use when the hair is too short for rollers. A roller needs enough length to wrap. A pixie does not have it, and a lot of fine, chin-length hair barely does. So the comb is the answer for the people rollers cannot help. They are different solutions for different lengths.
- 4:01Jess: And what about people who want this permanently? A perm?
- 4:05Delena: This is the no-perm version, and that is exactly why I picked it. I have fine-haired clients who came to me asking for a body perm because they were tired of the flatness, and I would rather send them home with a seven-dollar comb and a two-minute routine than put chemicals on hair that is already delicate. If you do this every morning it takes less time than making coffee.
- 4:27Jess: Does it hold through the day?
- 4:29Delena: With the powder worked in, yes. Without the powder, no, and that is usually the difference when someone tells me it did not work. The other thing is do not touch it. Every time you run your fingers through it during the day you are pulling the scaffold apart. Build it in the morning and leave it alone.
- 4:47Jess: Where do people get the comb?
- 4:49Delena: thepixiegarden.com. The Magic Texture Comb and the Hair Finishing Stick are both there. Those two and a texture powder are the whole routine.
- 4:58Jess: All linked on this episode's page with the full written guide. See you Thursday.
