Martha Lillard, the last known American to live with an iron lung, passed away at 78 after a life of extraordinary resilience—diagnosed with polio at age five and told she wouldn’t live past 20, she defied the odds, married her soulmate after decades of waiting, and lived independently, cooking her own meals, writing poetry, and championing animal rescue—until her final days, when she spent nearly 24 hours a day in her iron lung, her death attributed to long-term COVID-19 effects and post-polio syndrome.
