- 0:30Speaker 1: I thank you in advance for sending people my way
- 0:33Speaker 1: like the Ethiopian eunuch in today's reading. When others seek
- 0:39Speaker 1: to throw me into a cistern and try to muddy
- 0:42Speaker 1: my character and name, I thank you that through the
- 0:46Speaker 1: clothing of kindness and humility you will provide a way
- 0:50Speaker 1: for me out of that muddy pit. When the hands

- 1:09Speaker 1: No matter what may come my way, I am resting
- 1:14Speaker 1: in the finished work, God. I am at peace because

- 1:46Speaker 2: God protects Jeremiah. In our last story, we learned about
- 1:51Speaker 2: King Zedekiah's stubbornness against the Babylonians. He fought against them
- 1:56Speaker 2: despite Jeremiah's warnings. Jeremiah continued to warn people that fighting
- 2:01Speaker 2: against Babylon was a vain attempt, like grasping at air.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Those warnings got Jeremiah beaten and thrown into prison. Now
- 2:10Speaker 2: Jeremiah remains in the courthouse as a captive and watches
- 2:14Speaker 2: as the Chaldeans and Babylonians pick apart Judah piece by piece.
- 2:19Speaker 2: In this story, we watch the demise of Judah through
- 2:22Speaker 2: the eyes of Jeremiah. The old prophet is beaten, stripped
- 2:26Speaker 2: of wealth, and thrown into mud by his own people.
- 2:30Speaker 2: It would be foreigners and enemies that show him kindness,
- 2:34Speaker 2: inspired by the book of Jeremiah.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:42Speaker 3: Bible in a Year podcast. Thanks for joining us. In
- 2:45Speaker 3: our last episode, we saw a desperate but still prideful king, Zedekiah,
- 2:50Speaker 3: seeking good news from Jeremiah. He was holding out hope
- 2:53Speaker 3: that Judah could hold off the Babylonian onslaught and drive
- 2:57Speaker 3: them out of the land. But Jeremiah was not in
- 3:00Speaker 3: the business of telling people what they wanted to hear.
- 3:03Speaker 3: He was God's man, God's messenger, even if the message
- 3:07Speaker 3: was one of judgment he delivered. This cost Jeremiah, including
- 3:12Speaker 3: scorn and beatings from those who opposed him. Still, devastation
- 3:17Speaker 3: was coming from the Chaldeans. And today, We'll hear of
- 3:20Speaker 3: the things Jeremiah experienced as Judah crumbled. God will call
- 3:24Speaker 3: him to sacrifice his own wealth and freedom for the
- 3:27Speaker 3: sake of others. And through it all, the Lord will
- 3:30Speaker 3: be with him, protecting his prophet and using him to
- 3:33Speaker 3: tell a story of ultimate redemption. So, let's listen today
- 3:37Speaker 3: to God's Word.
- 3:40Speaker 2: The prophet Jeremiah had been shut up in the courthouse
- 3:43Speaker 2: of Zedekiah for a long while. During that time, King
- 3:47Speaker 2: Nebuchadnezzar began his second wind of attacks against Judah. The
- 3:52Speaker 2: Chaldeans broke down the walls and burned the city streets,
- 3:55Speaker 2: and Nebuchadnezzar waltzed in without struggle. The land was large.
- 4:01Speaker 2: It would take the Babylonians weeks to reach Jerusalem. There
- 4:04Speaker 2: was a sense of urgency in King Zedekiah as he
- 4:07Speaker 2: rallied more men to fight. He fought against Nebuchadnezzar and
- 4:11Speaker 2: the Chaldeans despite Jeremiah's warnings. One day, Jeremiah was praying
- 4:17Speaker 2: in a solitary part of the courthouse. God whispered to
- 4:20Speaker 2: him as he once did to Elijah. In that still
- 4:24Speaker 2: and quiet voice, the Lord made his will known to
- 4:27Speaker 2: the prophet. Your uncle Hanamel will visit you in desperation.
- 4:32Speaker 2: He will want to sell you his land in Anathoth.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Jeremiah's eyes widened at the words of the Lord. Anathoth
- 4:39Speaker 2: was already under siege from Babylon. Any land his uncle
- 4:43Speaker 2: would want to sell him would be utterly worthless. It
- 4:46Speaker 2: was the Lord's intention for Jeremiah to use his money
- 4:49Speaker 2: to redeem his uncle and save him in hard times.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Sure enough, the next day Hanamel came to visit his
- 4:56Speaker 2: nephew at the courthouse. He begged Jeremiah to buy the
- 5:00Speaker 2: land off him. He said that he desired for the
- 5:02Speaker 2: land to stay in the family. However, Jeremiah knew it
- 5:06Speaker 2: was because the Babylonians had taken it, and the land
- 5:09Speaker 2: was of no use to anyone now. Buying the land
- 5:12Speaker 2: would be relieving his uncle of a burden. Jeremiah knew
- 5:16Speaker 2: that the Lord had called him to this. So he
- 5:18Speaker 2: bought the land and gave the deed to his friend
- 5:21Speaker 2: Baruch for safekeeping. The deed would be an image of
- 5:25Speaker 2: future redemption. To own that land would mean certain Babylonian slavery.
- 5:30Speaker 2: So Jeremiah redeemed his uncle so he could be free.
- 5:34Speaker 2: This is what the Lord would do for his people.
- 5:37Speaker 2: He would pay the price of slavery so that his
- 5:40Speaker 2: loved ones might live free. Jeremiah rejoiced in the Lord,
- 5:44Speaker 2: but continued to feel sorrow in his heart for Judah's fate.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Days passed, and the siege of Babylon continued. Jeremiah went
- 5:53Speaker 2: to the roof of the courthouse. He could see the
- 5:56Speaker 2: horrors of the Chaldeans in the distance. They had destroyed
- 5:59Speaker 2: most of the walls of Jerusalem. Zedekiah and his men
- 6:02Speaker 2: had destroyed a few of the homes to create a
- 6:05Speaker 2: makeshift wall to keep the Chaldeans out. When that didn't work,
- 6:09Speaker 2: they stacked on dead bodies to turn away the enemy.
- 6:12Speaker 2: God saw this and his heart broke. The blighted wind
- 6:17Speaker 2: came in from the north and Jeremiah began to sob.
- 6:20Speaker 2: The Lord spoke to him again saying, I am the
- 6:23Speaker 2: Lord who has made the earth. I will restore this
- 6:26Speaker 2: city once again. I will heal them and reveal my goodness.
- 6:31Speaker 2: The Lord's words touched Jeremiah's heart as he looked upon
- 6:35Speaker 2: the ashy city below. How could God fix this? Jeremiah
- 6:39Speaker 2: must have thought. I will cleanse my people from the
- 6:43Speaker 2: guilt of their sins. I will forgive them and wash
- 6:46Speaker 2: them clean. After this destruction, there shall again be the
- 6:50Speaker 2: sound of wedding bells, the voice of a groom singing
- 6:54Speaker 2: over his bride. All shall be made whole again, God declared.
- 6:59Speaker 2: This was another image of what God would do in
- 7:02Speaker 2: his people. Hundreds of years from then, a new king
- 7:06Speaker 2: would arise and walk the streets of Jerusalem. He would
- 7:09Speaker 2: enter and wash the people white as snow. Jeremiah continued
- 7:14Speaker 2: to do his best to warn the people of Judah
- 7:16Speaker 2: as they passed by the courthouse. He told them they
- 7:19Speaker 2: had a choice, remain in Judah and be made captives,
- 7:23Speaker 2: or flee to the Chaldeans and be spared. Jeremiah's words
- 7:27Speaker 2: were like poison to the men trying to fight. The
- 7:30Speaker 2: princes and commanders marched to the king and said, You
- 7:34Speaker 2: cannot let this man live! His words are quenching the
- 7:37Speaker 2: fire of our soldiers. Every time they hear him speak,
- 7:41Speaker 2: they lose more hope for victory. I agree, King Zedekiah replied.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Do as you wish with him. My hands are clean
- 7:50Speaker 2: of it. The king's answer only partially pleased the princes,
- 7:54Speaker 2: for they desire Jeremiah dead, but did not want his
- 7:57Speaker 2: blood on their hands. Jeremiah was praying to the Lord
- 8:01Speaker 2: in his room when he heard the door creak open.
- 8:04Speaker 2: He turned around and saw the princes and some guards
- 8:07Speaker 2: with clubs and ropes. More beatings. Jeremiah had become accustomed
- 8:12Speaker 2: to them by now. He had come to expect brutality
- 8:16Speaker 2: over kindness. The men beat him and bound him. Jeremiah's
- 8:20Speaker 2: bruised and bloody body was dragged through the courtyard towards
- 8:23Speaker 2: an old cistern. It was deep and no longer flowing
- 8:27Speaker 2: with water. However, it was filled with mud and moss.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Jeremiah was let down into the cistern on ropes. His
- 8:34Speaker 2: feet touched the mud below, and he tried to find
- 8:37Speaker 2: steady footing. He sank. The mud consumed him, and darkness
- 8:42Speaker 2: enveloped him. Ebed the Ethiopian eunuch was strolling around the
- 8:46Speaker 2: courtyard when he heard the snickering of passing walkers. It
- 8:50Speaker 2: came to his attention that Jeremiah was tossed into the
- 8:53Speaker 2: muddy cistern to rot with no food or water. He
- 8:57Speaker 2: immediately went to the king and said, This is truly evil.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Jeremiah is a man of God and was left in
- 9:03Speaker 2: that well to starve. Give me permission to fish him
- 9:06Speaker 2: out before judgment falls on all of us. The king
- 9:10Speaker 2: gave his passive permission, and immediately Ebed gathered thirty men
- 9:14Speaker 2: to tie clothing together to make a rope. Ebed brought
- 9:17Speaker 2: the makeshift rope and his men down to the cistern.
- 9:20Speaker 2: He peered down to see Jeremiah's motionless body consumed by
- 9:24Speaker 2: the mud and We are going to rescue you, he shouted.
- 9:28Speaker 2: When the rope comes down, tie it under your arms.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Jeremiah was barely conscious. He had gone days without food
- 9:35Speaker 2: or water and was beginning to think he would die
- 9:37Speaker 2: there in that cistern. He was pulled out and given
- 9:41Speaker 2: a little food to eat and water to drink. Not
- 9:44Speaker 2: much could be spared since Judah was still in decline.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Jeremiah remained in the courthouse, recovering from his near-death experience
- 9:51Speaker 2: in the cistern. He was quiet of late and filled
- 9:55Speaker 2: with contemplation. The prophet was about to go to sleep
- 9:59Speaker 2: when his door opened. He had been summoned to meet
- 10:02Speaker 2: King Zedekiah. Jeremiah was escorted out of the courthouse. He
- 10:06Speaker 2: walked next to the guard past the palace. He had
- 10:09Speaker 2: thought he would meet the king in the palace as usual. However,
- 10:13Speaker 2: they were making their way towards the temple. It was late,
- 10:17Speaker 2: and the distant sound of war had subsided for the night.
- 10:20Speaker 2: All that remained was the silent crackling of fire and
- 10:23Speaker 2: the moving breeze. Jeremiah saw King Zedekiah sitting at the
- 10:27Speaker 2: steps of the third gate of the temple. He approached
- 10:31Speaker 2: the king. There was silence for a moment as the
- 10:34Speaker 2: king looked blankly into the distance.
- 10:36Speaker 3: There was a.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Crack in his normally impassive and expressionless face. Zedekiah sighed.
- 10:43Speaker 2: I will ask you this one question. The king said,
- 10:46Speaker 2: still looking blankly into nothing. Hide nothing from me. I
- 10:51Speaker 2: only want the truth. The truth usually gets me beaten
- 10:56Speaker 2: or worse, Jeremiah replied. The king looked at Jeremiah somberly.
- 11:01Speaker 2: I swear you will not be harmed, nor will I
- 11:04Speaker 2: deliver you back into the hands of those who want
- 11:06Speaker 2: you dead. The king paused. He looked like a defeated man,
- 11:11Speaker 2: a weary man. What will come of us? Zedekiah asked.
- 11:17Speaker 2: There were cracks in his voice as he spoke. Jeremiah
- 11:20Speaker 2: sat beside the king, looking into the nothingness next to him.
- 11:24Speaker 2: If you surrender, your life will be spared. The city
- 11:29Speaker 2: won't be burned to the ground. You and your house
- 11:32Speaker 2: shall live, he explained. But if you do not surrender
- 11:36Speaker 2: and you continue fighting, many more will die. This city
- 11:40Speaker 2: will be reduced to ashes. I fear that if I surrender,
- 11:45Speaker 2: I will be given over to the men who deserted
- 11:47Speaker 2: Judah to be with the Chaldeans. They are not happy
- 11:50Speaker 2: with me and will kill me, the king confessed. Jeremiah
- 11:54Speaker 2: shook his head. You won't be given to them. Heed
- 11:58Speaker 2: God's warnings now and the Lord will deal well with you.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Refuse and all your house will be captive to Babylon,
- 12:05Speaker 2: he said with a pleading tone. Zedekiah rose up from
- 12:09Speaker 2: the temple steps and began to walk away. He paused
- 12:12Speaker 2: and turned to Jeremiah, saying, Do not speak of our
- 12:16Speaker 2: conversation tonight, and I will let you live. So Jeremiah
- 12:20Speaker 2: remained in the courthouse as the city was breached. Jeremiah
- 12:25Speaker 2: woke up to the earth shaking beneath him. The Chaldeans
- 12:28Speaker 2: had taken another side of the wall. The rocks fell
- 12:31Speaker 2: to the floor and shook the earth. Zedekiah had not
- 12:34Speaker 2: listened to the words of Jeremiah and raised his sword
- 12:37Speaker 2: against the Chaldeans. However, he was met with a force
- 12:41Speaker 2: too great to comprehend. Jeremiah watched from a distance as
- 12:45Speaker 2: Zedekiah's army retreated to the palace gardens. One by one,
- 12:49Speaker 2: they were picked off. Spears were driven through their hearts
- 12:53Speaker 2: and their heads were put on pikes. Tears streamed down
- 12:56Speaker 2: Jeremiah's face as he watched King Zedekiah beg for mercy.
- 13:01Speaker 2: The king was beaten, bound, and sent off to Babylon.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Jeremiah sat in his room and waited. He knew it
- 13:09Speaker 2: was only a matter of time before the Babylonian commanders
- 13:12Speaker 2: stormed to the courthouse in search of wealth. The captain
- 13:16Speaker 2: of Babylonian guard, Nebuchadnezzar, had his men search the courthouse.
- 13:21Speaker 2: They took captives, gold, silver, and precious documents. They scoured
- 13:26Speaker 2: every room and closet until it was empty. Jeremiah's door
- 13:29Speaker 2: burst open. and he was drug out into the courtyard
- 13:32Speaker 2: before Nebuchadnezzar. Jeremiah leaned in to receive another beating. However,
- 13:38Speaker 2: he was met with a warmness from the captain. King
- 13:41Speaker 2: Nebuchadnezzar had heard of Jeremiah. He heard of his warnings
- 13:45Speaker 2: to the people of Judah and took pity on Jeremiah
- 13:48Speaker 2: for being a messenger of reason. Although Babylon was evil,
- 13:52Speaker 2: there was a glimmer of mercy in their actions towards Jeremiah.
- 13:56Speaker 2: He was given food, water, and a bodyguard to escort
- 13:59Speaker 2: him back to his home. He was also offered a
- 14:02Speaker 2: place beside Nebuchadnezzar. Jeremiah had a privilege no one else
- 14:07Speaker 2: in Judah had. A choice. A choice to remain with
- 14:11Speaker 2: his people or live in the comforts of Babylon. With
- 14:15Speaker 2: that freedom, he chose to dwell among the remaining inhabitants
- 14:18Speaker 2: of Judah. There he cared for them in his old
- 14:21Speaker 2: age and helped them pursue God despite their suffering. As
- 14:25Speaker 2: Jeremiah looked into the distance, he could see a pillar
- 14:28Speaker 2: of flames where the temple was being burned. Everyone watched
- 14:31Speaker 2: in sorrow as the temple crumbled. Jeremiah's heart swelled with sadness.
- 14:36Speaker 2: He did not turn his eyes from the temple. As
- 14:39Speaker 2: he stared out at the distance, he remembered the image
- 14:42Speaker 2: God showed him of the potter and clay. The old
- 14:45Speaker 2: pot was broken so a new one could emerge more beautiful.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Out of death would come new life. This was the
- 14:53Speaker 2: rhythm of creation. This was the way of the Lord.
- 15:00Speaker 3: As we begin today's reading, Jeremiah is confined to Zedekiah's
- 15:04Speaker 3: courthouse while the king and his armies try in vain
- 15:07Speaker 3: to hold off the assault of Nebuchadnezzar's forces. But at last,
- 15:12Speaker 3: the Chaldeans broke through the walls and the Babylonian king
- 15:15Speaker 3: entered the land headed for Jerusalem and King Zedekiah. Judah
- 15:20Speaker 3: was in ruins. Cities set ablaze as the Chaldeans marched through,
- 15:24Speaker 3: taking and doing whatever they pleased. And so in this context,
- 15:28Speaker 3: the Lord spoke one day to Jeremiah. This time, the
- 15:32Speaker 3: message was not for Zedekiah or the people of Judah.
- 15:35Speaker 3: It was for Jeremiah himself. God told him his uncle
- 15:39Speaker 3: Hanamel was going to come to him desperate and try
- 15:42Speaker 3: to sell his land to Jeremiah. His property had no
- 15:46Speaker 3: value as the Babylonians had taken that part of Judah.
- 15:50Speaker 3: This wasn't an investment opportunity for Jeremiah. It was a sacrifice.
- 15:56Speaker 3: Buying the land from Hanamel would take an enormous burden
- 15:59Speaker 3: off the shoulders of his uncle and rescue him from
- 16:02Speaker 3: certain slavery. Jeremiah was faithful to the Lord's will and
- 16:06Speaker 3: bought the land. It was a redemptive act that gave
- 16:10Speaker 3: Hanamel a freedom he had done nothing to earn and
- 16:13Speaker 3: had no hope to attain on his own. Through Jeremiah's sacrifice,
- 16:18Speaker 3: God was showing his people what he would do for
- 16:21Speaker 3: them and for us, paying the price for our freedom.
- 16:26Speaker 3: It is an act of pure grace. The battle continued
- 16:30Speaker 3: with Zedekiah and his forces fighting in futility against Babylon.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Jeremiah watched in horror and grief as his homeland was destroyed,
- 16:38Speaker 3: the dead bodies piling up left and right. And he
- 16:42Speaker 3: wept for Judah. God spoke to him again with words
- 16:46Speaker 3: of hope. Listen to God's promise found in Jeremiah 33,
- 16:50Speaker 3: verses 6 through 8. Behold, I will bring it to
- 16:54Speaker 3: health and healing. and I will heal them and reveal
- 16:57Speaker 3: to them abundance of prosperity and security. I will restore
- 17:01Speaker 3: the fortunes of Judah and the fortunes of Israel and
- 17:04Speaker 3: rebuild them as they were at first. I will cleanse
- 17:07Speaker 3: them from all the guilt of their sin against me,
- 17:10Speaker 3: and I will forgive all the guilt of their sin
- 17:13Speaker 3: and rebellion against me. This is a tremendous promise from
- 17:18Speaker 3: God's Word to all of us. When we confess our sins,
- 17:22Speaker 3: turn our hearts to Him, Even in the most challenging moments,
- 17:27Speaker 3: his faithfulness, his goodness, all his promises are there to
- 17:30Speaker 3: strengthen and help us and to encourage us and yes,
- 17:34Speaker 3: forgive us when we need forgiveness. God reminds Jeremiah and
- 17:39Speaker 3: all of us that when we face adverse circumstances, God
- 17:43Speaker 3: can use these things to cleanse us of our sin
- 17:46Speaker 3: and our rebellion against him. So Jeremiah continued to do
- 17:51Speaker 3: what God called him to do. And today we heard
- 17:53Speaker 3: how yet again those who didn't want to hear of
- 17:56Speaker 3: condemnation and judgment sought to take Jeremiah's life. He was
- 18:00Speaker 3: seized and thrown into a cistern. But at the last moment,
- 18:05Speaker 3: God sent a man to rescue him. We then hear
- 18:09Speaker 3: an earnest conversation between Jeremiah and a weary king, Zedekiah.
- 18:14Speaker 3: The arrogance and anger of the king seemed broken, replaced
- 18:18Speaker 3: by fear of what would happen to him. Jeremiah came
- 18:21Speaker 3: to him as a caring shepherd and a wise counselor,
- 18:24Speaker 3: urging this man to surrender as much to God's will
- 18:28Speaker 3: as to the Babylonians. But Zedekiah doesn't listen to the
- 18:32Speaker 3: last warning and continues to flee and fight until one
- 18:35Speaker 3: by one his men are killed, along with his sons,
- 18:38Speaker 3: slaughtered right before his eyes. Zedekiah's eyes are gouged out
- 18:43Speaker 3: and he is taken away in captivity to Babylon. Such
- 18:46Speaker 3: a tragic, sad ending that could have been avoided if
- 18:50Speaker 3: only Zedekiah had listened to God's warnings. As for Jeremiah,
- 18:56Speaker 3: he obeyed and found mercy in the sight of the Lord,
- 18:59Speaker 3: even kindness by the Babylonian commander. He is given a
- 19:03Speaker 3: choice to go to Babylon, to live in comfort, or
- 19:06Speaker 3: to stay with his people. Jeremiah chooses to remain in
- 19:09Speaker 3: Judah to serve his people, even as Jerusalem and God's
- 19:13Speaker 3: temple crumble to the ground. But this man of God
- 19:18Speaker 3: knows that the Lord one day will make all things
- 19:21Speaker 3: new because our God is always faithful to his word
- 19:25Speaker 3: and his goodness and mercy is eternal. Let's pray. Lord God,
- 19:31Speaker 3: may we always listen and obey you. May we always
- 19:36Speaker 3: do your will and trust you. And when we disobey,
- 19:39Speaker 3: may we find forgiveness as we confess our sins. Lord,
- 19:43Speaker 3: we thank you for the story of Jeremiah and this
- 19:47Speaker 3: man of God. who was faithful to you all the
- 19:50Speaker 3: days of his life. May we also live in commitment
- 19:54Speaker 3: and consecration to you. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you
