- 0:27Speaker 1: what happens. Now, turn down the lights, get comfortable, and
- 0:33Speaker 1: let's begin tonight's story. If people knew about this habit
- 0:39Speaker 1: of mine, they'd probably deem me obsessive, paranoid, overly dramatic, etc.
- 0:45Speaker 1: You get the point. See, the thing about me is
- 0:50Speaker 1: that I absolutely need to, like I really need to,
- 0:54Speaker 1: make sure everything is pitch perfect right before I fall asleep.
- 0:59Speaker 1: to be truthful I have no idea where this awful
- 1:03Speaker 1: and obnoxious tendency of mine arose but now I live
- 1:07Speaker 1: with it as if it's an itch I can never
- 1:09Speaker 1: alleviate every single goddamn night word to God I drive
- 1:16Speaker 1: myself crazy checking to see if the doors are locked
- 1:19Speaker 1: if everything in the kitchen's turned off if nothing's left
- 1:23Speaker 1: open in the cabinet so that the roaches accommodating my
- 1:26Speaker 1: home won't crawl up on my damn cinnamon toast crunch
- 1:30Speaker 1: Last time, I found an entire farm of the bastards
- 1:34Speaker 1: munching on my cereal. What makes this habit of mine
- 1:38Speaker 1: dreadful is the fact that not only do I reassure
- 1:41Speaker 1: myself of my house's safety once, not even twice, but
- 1:46Speaker 1: sometimes three freaking times. Four if I'm feeling really peevish.
- 1:53Speaker 1: It's not even that I forget or anything like that.
- 1:56Speaker 1: It's just that I think I forget. When I stroll
- 1:59Speaker 1: back to lock my doors again, I know I'll find
- 2:02Speaker 1: the locks just how I left them the first time. Secured,
- 2:06Speaker 1: that is, even before I reach it. But anyway, it's
- 2:12Speaker 1: always the doors I'm mostly concerned about. Home invasion ain't
- 2:17Speaker 1: my biggest fear, but it's certainly up there, next to
- 2:20Speaker 1: clouds and being buried alive. Plus, I remember this one
- 2:25Speaker 1: time when I was 15 or around there. It's hard
- 2:29Speaker 1: to remember when you're too busy being a sloth and
- 2:31Speaker 1: worrying about your pimples. Someone robbed my old house in
- 2:36Speaker 1: the middle of the night. The next day, my family
- 2:40Speaker 1: and I found some of our jewellery missing, and whoever
- 2:43Speaker 1: broke in also took the family's computer in the living room.
- 2:48Speaker 1: I wasn't even all that pissed off that some random
- 2:50Speaker 1: jerk purloined most of our precious possessions. What really struck
- 2:55Speaker 1: my nerve was the single thought that as I slept
- 2:59Speaker 1: defenseless and vulnerable, a person could have watched over my
- 3:04Speaker 1: body and soul and done whatever he or she desired.
- 3:09Speaker 1: I could have died in my sleep without ever knowing
- 3:12Speaker 1: that I was killed in the first place. Phew. That
- 3:17Speaker 1: crap freaks me out. I guess some might qualify this
- 3:21Speaker 1: event as the origin of my curse, but at this
- 3:24Speaker 1: point I stopped questioning it. Screw it, at least I
- 3:29Speaker 1: don't have some other messed up habit. You'd be surprised
- 3:33Speaker 1: at what people are turned on by. All these thoughts
- 3:36Speaker 1: zoom through my head as I stand in front of
- 3:39Speaker 1: my entrance door. My clammy hands enclose around the golden doorknob,
- 3:44Speaker 1: locking it in place. I realise how creepy I must look,
- 3:50Speaker 1: staring outside the window. My eyes glaring at the dozen
- 3:54Speaker 1: houses in the tenebrous night. I shake my head and
- 3:59Speaker 1: go to turn away. I can't wake to freaking sleep
- 4:03Speaker 1: the moment my body lands on the bed. My eyes
- 4:07Speaker 1: feel as if the dark bags under my pupils are
- 4:10Speaker 1: carrying the weight of the earth. I glance around my
- 4:14Speaker 1: living room and kitchen, the fluorescent light near the sink
- 4:17Speaker 1: stinging my strained eyes. Before I go to turn the
- 4:21Speaker 1: irritating thing off, I check one last time to see
- 4:25Speaker 1: if the stove and kitchen is off. I find it
- 4:28Speaker 1: necessary I pull the lever twice, all the way to zero.
- 4:33Speaker 1: I even peer my already exhausted eyes close to the thing,
- 4:37Speaker 1: to make sure the little mark aligns with the number zero.
- 4:41Speaker 1: They do. Alright, now that's done. I flick the switch off.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Darkness suddenly blankets my entire setting. The only remaining light
- 4:54Speaker 1: consists of the luminous moon, blaring through the number of
- 4:57Speaker 1: windows surrounding me. Either way, I can practically crawl to
- 5:03Speaker 1: my room with my eyes closed. I drag my feet
- 5:07Speaker 1: out of my kitchen. My bones feel dense and sore,
- 5:12Speaker 1: and my aching muscles only add to my struggle. I
- 5:16Speaker 1: was so close to falling asleep in my bed, but
- 5:19Speaker 1: last second, I reminded myself that I never checked if
- 5:22Speaker 1: the doors were locked. As much as I restrained myself
- 5:26Speaker 1: from kicking my feet off the bed and making the
- 5:29Speaker 1: arduous trip to my living room, I caved into my habit,
- 5:33Speaker 1: as always. Oh well. Did I forget something? No. I
- 5:40Speaker 1: checked the doors, searched through the shelves, did the kitchen stuff. No,
- 5:44Speaker 1: I'm fine. And for once, I seemed close to stop
- 5:48Speaker 1: caring entirely. But then, I hear a knock on the
- 5:54Speaker 1: closet door. It sounded quick, but loud. I hauled to
- 6:00Speaker 1: a stop, my feet almost tripping on themselves. At first,
- 6:05Speaker 1: I'm too tired to make anything out of it. Then
- 6:09Speaker 1: I hear someone or something shift the door again, wood
- 6:14Speaker 1: grinding against wood. My heart does all the racing now
- 6:19Speaker 1: instead of my mind, which remains as blank as a
- 6:22Speaker 1: clean sheet of paper. Suddenly, the darkness becomes thicker and
- 6:28Speaker 1: the pounds sagging my eyes down disappear. I feel alert.
- 6:35Speaker 1: I stand as still as a statue, a part of
- 6:38Speaker 1: me thinking that if I remain frozen, whoever infiltrated my
- 6:42Speaker 1: house won't be able to see me. I'll be invisible
- 6:47Speaker 1: and I won't get gutted or murdered. What the hell
- 6:52Speaker 1: am I doing? I say to myself. I turn around
- 6:56Speaker 1: and stomp back towards my living room. It'll be nothing,
- 7:00Speaker 1: as always. If anything, the worst I'll find are some
- 7:04Speaker 1: damn rats digging through all the mess inside my closet.
- 7:08Speaker 1: My neighbours have been warning me of them bastards entering
- 7:10Speaker 1: houses and screwing up the damn heating vents. As irritated
- 7:15Speaker 1: as I feel at the moment, I wouldn't mind whacking
- 7:18Speaker 1: one of them rodents with a broom. Hell, the way
- 7:22Speaker 1: I'm in debt, I might save you for dinner, I
- 7:24Speaker 1: say to myself. I'm only joking, of course. I turn
- 7:30Speaker 1: on the dining room lights instead of the kitchen ones,
- 7:33Speaker 1: and I raise my hand over my eyes. Yellow light
- 7:37Speaker 1: spreads all over my dining table and some areas of
- 7:40Speaker 1: the living room. I shuffle my feet towards the closet
- 7:44Speaker 1: across from the entrance door. I wrap my hands around
- 7:47Speaker 1: the doorknob, but feel a subtle hint of dismay at
- 7:51Speaker 1: the core of my stomach. It tries to spread all
- 7:56Speaker 1: over my body in veins, but I prevent it from
- 7:58Speaker 1: doing so. I'm just wasting time, I whisper, as I
- 8:04Speaker 1: turn the knob and swing the door wide open. A
- 8:09Speaker 1: rush of cold air traps my body for a quick second.
- 8:13Speaker 1: I slightly shiver and tiptoe in order to reach the
- 8:17Speaker 1: round bulb above. A while back, my friend David broke
- 8:21Speaker 1: the string that operated as the light switched. so now
- 8:25Speaker 1: I'm required to turn the bulb slightly towards the left
- 8:28Speaker 1: in order to illuminate my closet. The bulb radiates a
- 8:33Speaker 1: tenuous orange light, a pathetic excuse for a bulb in
- 8:36Speaker 1: my opinion. I rummage around all the junk inside my closet,
- 8:42Speaker 1: which consists of just a bunch of sporting bags and
- 8:44Speaker 1: old coats that I never wear anymore. I always try
- 8:48Speaker 1: to remind myself I'll go to the Salvation Army to
- 8:50Speaker 1: donate them, but I seem to forget every time. Nothing
- 8:55Speaker 1: as expected. Just in case, however, I emerge deeper inside
- 9:00Speaker 1: my closet and throw stuff everywhere to accomplish a more
- 9:05Speaker 1: thorough search. But, as always, freaking nothing. Waste of time,
- 9:12Speaker 1: that is. God damn, I say to myself. I ain't
- 9:16Speaker 1: got no time for this, man. At this point, sleep
- 9:21Speaker 1: seems more like a damn gift instead of a necessity.
- 9:25Speaker 1: I slither out of my closet, trying not to think
- 9:28Speaker 1: of how cranky I am right now. I know after
- 9:32Speaker 1: doing all of this crap, I won't be able to
- 9:34Speaker 1: feel tired again until... Bang. Downstairs. My damn basement. You
- 9:41Speaker 1: have to be kidding me. I'm more cantankerous than anything, right?
- 9:46Speaker 1: Two more bangs. I jump out of fright and fall
- 9:51Speaker 1: on top of the piles of jackets. My heart seems
- 9:55Speaker 1: as if it wants to launch out of my damn chest.
- 9:59Speaker 1: Blood rushes into my body. my head, my face tingling.
- 10:03Speaker 1: All of the air in my lungs depletes, and for
- 10:06Speaker 1: a second I think I might need my inhaler. That
- 10:10Speaker 1: second bang caught me by surprise. What the hell caused it?
- 10:14Speaker 1: This time, I hear the sound of something sharp. scratching
- 10:19Speaker 1: the surface of the basement door. If I felt fully
- 10:23Speaker 1: awake before, then now I feel as if I just
- 10:26Speaker 1: drank three Red Bulls under the span of two minutes.
- 10:30Speaker 1: I pick myself up and analyse everything through, despite the
- 10:34Speaker 1: fact that I feel like a nervous wreck. I breathe
- 10:38Speaker 1: in and out in order to calm myself down. Alright,
- 10:42Speaker 1: I got this. I have no other choice but to
- 10:46Speaker 1: go downstairs. and make sure everything's okay. Even as I
- 10:51Speaker 1: repeat those words in my head, however, I can't help
- 10:54Speaker 1: but to feel trepidation at whatever danger may or may
- 10:58Speaker 1: not await me below. I skip up and down like
- 11:02Speaker 1: a goddamn fool, because for some reason this helps me
- 11:05Speaker 1: relax my tense body. Okay, I need to stop being
- 11:10Speaker 1: a little bitch. The best tip I can ever offer
- 11:13Speaker 1: a person is when you feel like doing something daring,
- 11:17Speaker 1: just don't think about it. I follow my own outrageous advice,
- 11:22Speaker 1: and nearly jog all across my dining room and hallway
- 11:25Speaker 1: in order to reach the door that leads to the
- 11:27Speaker 1: basement downstairs. I even ignore all of the lights turned on,
- 11:33Speaker 1: even though I feel slightly annoyed doing so. Let's go, baby.
- 11:37Speaker 1: I ain't scared. I don't even allow my mind to
- 11:41Speaker 1: ponder about anything as I slam the door open and
- 11:44Speaker 1: march my way downstairs. The light's always on where the
- 11:49Speaker 1: laundry equipment is so I don't concern myself with the darkness.
- 11:54Speaker 1: I stop on my tracks right on the last step.
- 11:59Speaker 1: That ugly and unwanted horror takes hostage of my body
- 12:03Speaker 1: and mind and makes me doubt my motives. Each breath
- 12:08Speaker 1: I take only worsens my condition. It's the unknown that
- 12:13Speaker 1: finally gets to me and the fact that I stand
- 12:17Speaker 1: alone Both factors tag-team me in order to cause my
- 12:22Speaker 1: knees to shake. I slowly meander closer to my basement door.
- 12:28Speaker 1: I see the poster of a golden heart shining amongst
- 12:31Speaker 1: dozens of clouds in what appears to be a representation
- 12:35Speaker 1: of heaven. My mother suggested I put it there on
- 12:38Speaker 1: the door. That way, a more sanctified vibe fills the house,
- 12:44Speaker 1: even when negativity attempts to sneak inside my home. Boy,
- 12:49Speaker 1: I sure hope that poster protects me this time around.
- 12:53Speaker 1: I don't allow for the enervating anticipation to kill me,
- 12:57Speaker 1: so I just barge inside my basement in a single shot.
- 13:01Speaker 1: I already wasted too much goddamn time, and sleep seems
- 13:05Speaker 1: just like a dream at this point. Heh, get it?
- 13:09Speaker 1: Light from the laundry room pours inside, but it's not
- 13:12Speaker 1: enough to investigate around. I feel around the walls until
- 13:17Speaker 1: I find the damn switch. and pull the lever upwards.
- 13:21Speaker 1: At least my basement isn't as much of a disaster
- 13:23Speaker 1: as my closet. I think I cleaned it with a
- 13:27Speaker 1: bunch of my buddies last week, since we plan on
- 13:29Speaker 1: playing beer pong here later this month. Thank God, too,
- 13:34Speaker 1: because this place used to smell like crap and cigarettes.
- 13:38Speaker 1: I scan around with my eyes, and find nothing worth noting.
- 13:43Speaker 1: Everything seems untouched as well. I still spot some of
- 13:47Speaker 1: my moving boxes clustered all around the carpet floor. I
- 13:52Speaker 1: swerve through them as I make my way towards the
- 13:54Speaker 1: closet all the way on the other side. I slide
- 13:59Speaker 1: the doors open and find nothing but dust and debris.
- 14:04Speaker 1: That stuff gets all over my nose and I feel
- 14:07Speaker 1: the sudden urge to sneeze. Jesus, I gasp as I
- 14:12Speaker 1: prepare myself for all the buggers to spray out of
- 14:15Speaker 1: my But then, three taps. I don't sneeze. What the hell?
- 14:24Speaker 1: I barely hear my own hollow voice. I stare at
- 14:29Speaker 1: the exit door. I swear I heard it there. There's
- 14:34Speaker 1: a peephole towards the top. That's my only option at
- 14:38Speaker 1: this point. See, I say that to myself, yet my
- 14:43Speaker 1: feet remain glued to the floor. Not even that, but
- 14:48Speaker 1: my legs struggle to keep my weight up. Terror sinks
- 14:52Speaker 1: its teeth deep into my nerves, poising my veins and
- 14:56Speaker 1: arteries with venom. Just the single thought of peeking into
- 15:01Speaker 1: that hole and finding some menacing bastard staring back at
- 15:05Speaker 1: me with heartless and morbid eyes makes my mouth grow dry.
- 15:11Speaker 1: Before I know it, I'm only a couple of feet
- 15:14Speaker 1: away from the door. I hold my two fists close
- 15:18Speaker 1: to my chest and take my time pacing closer to
- 15:21Speaker 1: my final destination. I feel the floor want to hold
- 15:25Speaker 1: my feet in place and keep me still forever. I
- 15:30Speaker 1: feel as if thousands of invisible eyes from the walls
- 15:32Speaker 1: around me are studying my every move and violating me
- 15:38Speaker 1: with their mendacious looks. A yell is locked in my throat,
- 15:43Speaker 1: but I don't allow it to escape my lips. Alright,
- 15:47Speaker 1: I'm in front. I made it this far. I reel
- 15:51Speaker 1: my face close to the door and peer one eyeball
- 15:55Speaker 1: inside the lens. For a moment, I think that a
- 16:00Speaker 1: blade is going to shoot through the door and pierce
- 16:02Speaker 1: through my skull. Why not, right? I see nothing but
- 16:08Speaker 1: my neighbour's empty backyard. No, wait, and his annoying dog.
- 16:14Speaker 1: The bastard always wakes me up in the middle of
- 16:16Speaker 1: the night, and barks at God knows what. Jesus, one
- 16:21Speaker 1: day I wish to snap its little neck with my
- 16:23Speaker 1: bare hands. Nothing. Why the hell do I stress myself?
- 16:30Speaker 1: Maybe this is a sign that I should stop being
- 16:32Speaker 1: so overly dramatic with the safety of my house. I mean,
- 16:35Speaker 1: look where it brought me. Now I've lost at least
- 16:39Speaker 1: half an hour worth of blissful sleep, and maybe even
- 16:42Speaker 1: more since my nerves wish to keep me awake a
- 16:44Speaker 1: bit longer. It stops now, I say to myself as
- 16:49Speaker 1: I walk back upstairs. Crap, I left the lights on.
- 16:55Speaker 1: I return to my dining room and turn off the lights.
- 17:00Speaker 1: I then see that I left the closet lights on
- 17:02Speaker 1: as well. Am I ever going to get to sleep?
- 17:07Speaker 1: I go to turn off the last and final light
- 17:10Speaker 1: and close my closet door. Finally. My entrance door taunts me.
- 17:18Speaker 1: It almost appears to whisper, You know you want to
- 17:21Speaker 1: check me, baby. God damn it. I stand still, staring
- 17:28Speaker 1: at it. Hell, I'll stop first thing tomorrow. One last
- 17:33Speaker 1: time just for old time's sake, right? Besides, either way
- 17:37Speaker 1: I'll find it locked. Both switches are unlocked. That terror
- 17:45Speaker 1: in my stomach, tremors and explodes. Thank you for listening
- 17:54Speaker 1: to tonight's story. If you enjoyed it and would like
