Transcript
- 0:00Hey! Hey! Hopefully that worked. Yeah. Do we
- 0:05like the name Dished at Birth? I really like
- 0:07the name Dished at Birth. And then for like the
- 0:09theme music, you should get like the Switched
- 0:11at Birth song, like... Okay, we don't have that
- 0:13kind of budget, so... No, we don't. So we're
- 0:15definitely not doing that. Welcome to Dished
- 0:26at Birth! Welcome to Dished at Birth. Oh my god,
- 0:28we didn't say that. Okay. Yeah. Welcome. What
- 0:31podcast is this? What are we gonna do? We're
- 0:35re -watching Switched at Birth. Every episode.
- 0:38Every episode. God help us. I know. And, oh my
- 0:42god, there's so many episodes. I know the first
- 0:45season has 30 episodes. Yeah, because I... When
- 0:49I went on my initial rewatch before we thought
- 0:52of doing a podcast at all. Right. And I just
- 0:54said, remember Switched at Birth? How funny would
- 0:56it be if I tossed it on? And then I texted you
- 0:59like, oh my God, guess what I'm watching? I only
- 1:02made it to episode 16. Of season one? Yeah, before
- 1:06I gave up. Because one, because we were like,
- 1:09oh, we're going to record this. And I wanted
- 1:10to be fresh. Me too. But two, that's 16 hours
- 1:15of television. It's a lot. How'd you find out
- 1:18about the show? So I was, I think I was already
- 1:24taking sign language lessons, like, with my friends.
- 1:28And the trailer dropped. And I was already, like,
- 1:34an ABC Family, like, drama kid. Who else was
- 1:37on the ABC Family at the time? Pretty Little
- 1:39Liars. Okay, I actually didn't watch Pretty Little
- 1:42Liars. I was a Pretty Little Liars fan. I was
- 1:44really scared of shows where there was murder.
- 1:47involved yeah that's the show yeah that's the
- 1:50whole show anyway it came on and my friends and
- 1:54i were like we have to watch this all together
- 1:57right every whatever night it was on Wednesday
- 2:01after sign late like we started coordinating
- 2:03our lessons so we'd already be at someone's house
- 2:06okay so we could all watch it together afterwards
- 2:08how did it find you same thing trailer in 2011
- 2:15For context, I am deaf slash hard of hearing.
- 2:18We should have started with that. Oh, I'm Kara,
- 2:20by the way. My name is Kara, and my friend here
- 2:23is... I'm Dani, and I'm hearing. Yeah, and I'm
- 2:27Kara, and I am deaf slash hard of hearing, whatever
- 2:29you want. Just don't say hearing impaired. So
- 2:32I saw the trailer in my... In my home in 2011.
- 2:39And I said, holy crap, there's a deaf person
- 2:42and she's signing. For context, I didn't know
- 2:44how to sign yet. I didn't learn sign until much
- 2:46later in life. And I've been fluent slash proficient.
- 2:52Let's say proficient. I'm not fluent. In ASL
- 2:55for about three years now. But it was still so,
- 2:59so cool to see like a young deaf girl on TV.
- 3:03And I was like, oh, well, I will absolutely be
- 3:05watching this. I just. Put it on my TiVo or whatever
- 3:09people did back then. And I watched it every
- 3:12week. And, yeah. I was a big re -watcher. Like,
- 3:16I would watch it with my friends, and then the
- 3:18next day I would, like, go on Hulu. And you would
- 3:20watch it again. And re -watch it. And that's
- 3:22extra work. And that's mental illness. Man, I
- 3:25was such a big fan of the show when it first
- 3:28came out. I talked about it with people at school.
- 3:30I remember that. But I don't know if too many
- 3:34of my friends watched it. I don't think... I
- 3:36had like a group of friends to watch it with
- 3:38like you did. It was definitely something I watched
- 3:41at home alone after school. And then I think
- 3:44I kind of just fell off as I got to like high
- 3:47school age. Okay. You haven't finished the show.
- 3:51No, I never finished the show. Yeah. And I went
- 3:54back. I also, I think, fell off and then went
- 3:57back years later and did a complete rewatch.
- 4:01So I unfortunately know where everyone ends up.
- 4:05Okay, yeah, I think I fell off around season
- 4:07three. I know this, I know season one very well.
- 4:10And then after that, I'm not entirely sure. But
- 4:14it will be really nice to go back to the show
- 4:17and kind of see what they did right and see what
- 4:21they didn't do so well. And then also, I think
- 4:24since I've been learning ASL and connecting with
- 4:26deaf culture and the deaf community in the past
- 4:28few years. It'd be a nice way for me to process
- 4:31the things I've been going through by watching
- 4:33this very silly show. Yeah. So the show was created
- 4:37in 2011 by Lizzy Wise. Yeah, and she is not deaf.
- 4:43I don't think it's part of deaf culture at all.
- 4:46But I watched some YouTube video about, like,
- 4:49why'd you make the show? And she was just like,
- 4:51I just thought the idea was fun. Oh, okay. So
- 4:54not, like, no inspiration from anything in her
- 4:58real life. No, I think she was just like, the
- 5:01idea of children being switched at birth is fascinating.
- 5:03And then she was like, well, what if one of them
- 5:04was deaf? She didn't know about anything about
- 5:07deaf culture while creating the show. And I think
- 5:10they kind of just, she just learned from making
- 5:12it. Did she get, do we think she got deaf people
- 5:16involved? Yeah, absolutely. Like more than, more
- 5:19than what we've seen? Like were there deaf people
- 5:21in the writer's room is what I'm dying to know.
- 5:24I don't know about the writer's room, but there
- 5:25were definitely deaf people helping with the
- 5:27dialogue. The guy who plays Emmett Bledsoe's
- 5:30dad, he was the ASL coach for the show. Emmett
- 5:34Bledsoe, The Love of My Life? Yeah, Emmett Bledsoe,
- 5:36The Love of My Life. Sean Birdie? Sean Birdie.
- 5:38Shout out to Sean Birdie. Love him so much. He
- 5:40disappeared off the face of the earth, what do
- 5:41you say? I think he's a real estate agent in
- 5:43Florida now. Wow. As is the actor who plays Travis
- 5:48later on, who's not in the show yet. Wow. He's
- 5:51also a real estate agent in Florida? Maybe not
- 5:53in Florida, but somewhere because I was Facebook
- 5:56friends with him. Like he had like one of those
- 5:58Facebook accounts that was like a public figure
- 6:02who you could both follow and friend request.
- 6:05Yeah. But he just accepted every single friend
- 6:08request. But I remember literally being like,
- 6:10oh my God, we're Facebook friends. And Travis
- 6:13from the source of birth. That is so cool. Yeah.
- 6:15He was such a cutie. Sometimes he showed... I
- 6:17think they're both still acting and they sometimes
- 6:19show up in things, but not... Not nearly to the
- 6:22extent. Not nearly as much. And not nearly as
- 6:24much as that one actor who I love who's now involved
- 6:28in Deaf West who was on Dancing with the Stars.
- 6:31Marlee Matlin? No. No, she was a huge get for
- 6:36this show. Yeah. They had Disney money for her.
- 6:40Yeah. Because my mom was like, oh my God, that's
- 6:43Marlee Matlin. had no frame of reference. I was
- 6:4712 years old. I don't know if I knew who she
- 6:49was. I think I must have seen her in other things
- 6:52because she's probably the only deaf representation
- 6:55I ever got growing up. I think I was just like,
- 6:58oh, I have seen her before and she is the one
- 7:01who signs really fast. Yeah. And also probably
- 7:04the best actor. And she's so hot. And she's extremely
- 7:09hot, which I don't think they really let her
- 7:11be. They don't really let any of the mom characters
- 7:14actually be hot. Let them be MILFs. Yeah. Let
- 7:18them be MILFs. They're all MILFs. They are all
- 7:20MILFs. I had such a crush on Catherine. You did?
- 7:24She was so hot with like her little, now that
- 7:27I'm saying this, her glasses and her red bangs
- 7:31looks somewhat suspiciously like my wife. Yeah.
- 7:35Also has like blondish. hair bangs and the glasses
- 7:39yeah i guess i have a type you really do that's
- 7:43crazy that is so silly yeah and she's like a
- 7:46high school movie like she was famous as a teenager
- 7:49back to the future yes thank you but yeah the
- 7:53show was like really revolutionary this was the
- 7:57This is like the first mainstream TV series to
- 8:00feature deaf characters in ASL, but it's not
- 8:02the first TV show at all to feature ASL. And
- 8:05from my very quick Google search, the first show
- 8:09was a children's show from the 70s called Rainbow's
- 8:12End. And then Sesame Street did it in 1971 with
- 8:16Linda Bove, who was a deaf actress. And she was
- 8:18like a regular cast member on Sesame Street,
- 8:22which tracks. I love Sesame Street. And then
- 8:24that kind of was it. the 70s and then nothing
- 8:28wow kind of like how they are like let's teach
- 8:32all the first graders the alphabet and then just
- 8:35stop there and yeah like baby sign yeah but the
- 8:38second they start speaking they're like okay
- 8:40that's enough should we get into the show we
- 8:42should get into this episode which is called
- 8:44this is not a pipe yeah and it aired june 6 2011
- 8:49this is the episode where Two girls from different
- 8:54worlds find out that they were switched at birth.
- 8:56So let's go through it scene by scene. Scene
- 8:59by scene. We're starting off at Buckner Hall.
- 9:01We're starting off at Buckner Hall with a voiceover
- 9:05that feels so relevant today because it's pulled
- 9:09straight from that Sidney Sweeney ad that everyone's
- 9:12pissed off about. The American Eagle one? Yes.
- 9:14The teacher is literally saying... Not literally,
- 9:17but she's basically going, genes are passed down
- 9:19from parent to offspring, like in the lab, explaining
- 9:23blood, like explaining your blood type. She's
- 9:26talking about genes. She's saying like, this
- 9:28is what you're inheriting from your parents.
- 9:31Did you know schools had to stop doing this because
- 9:33too many students were finding out they weren't
- 9:35related to their parents? I was going to ask,
- 9:37did you do this? I did not do a blood test, but
- 9:41I think I... I remember specifically in my ninth
- 9:45grade biology class, I had to see if I could
- 9:49roll my tongue or if I had a widow's peak. And
- 9:52then like, did I get it from my mom? Did I get
- 9:54it from my dad? And I kind of just like checked
- 9:57it off. But it wasn't as invasive as a blood
- 10:00test. Because I think with the blood test, it's
- 10:02like physical proof. Yeah, the pricking of the
- 10:06finger feels sort of intense for a high school
- 10:09science class to me. But they did it all the
- 10:11time, I think. Listeners, let us know if you
- 10:14had to do this in your biology classes. Please
- 10:17let me know if you had a blood test, because
- 10:21I don't know my blood type. I don't know my blood
- 10:23type. The fact that everyone in this family knows
- 10:26their blood type is very impressive. That's wealth
- 10:28for you. Yeah. So that's where it all begins.
- 10:33Yeah. But we meet in that particular scene, we
- 10:36meet John Kanish, who's played by D .W. Moffat,
- 10:39and then Catherine Kanish. who's played by Leah
- 10:41Thompson, a .k .a. Maury McFly's mom from the
- 10:44Back to the Future movies, which I know her from.
- 10:47Still a MILF. And then we also meet Toby Canish,
- 10:50played by Lucas Garbillo, a .k .a. Ryan Evans
- 10:53from High School Musical. God, I love him so
- 10:57much. I was such an excited Vine as a kid. I
- 11:00was like, oh my God, Ryan from High School Musical.
- 11:02It was truly thrilling to see him on screen.
- 11:05I was like, I'm just so glad he's like continuing
- 11:07his acting career. Aside from High School Musical.
- 11:10It made me feel safe in this new and unfamiliar
- 11:13world. I was like, oh my god, Ryan's here. So
- 11:16it can't be that scary. Yeah. And then also,
- 11:19I think we noticed, oh my god, their house is
- 11:22huge. Yeah, their house is ginormous. The kitchen's
- 11:26the size of my apartment. My full apartment.
- 11:29Yeah. That's going to be a big feature is how
- 11:32rich the Kenishes are. They're so rich. It's
- 11:35unbelievable. Which there's never really like
- 11:38parameters drawn. I don't know. Do we want to
- 11:41do spoilers? I think it's okay to do spoilers
- 11:43because the show has been on for years. I am.
- 11:45Yeah. I am like, if you're listening to this,
- 11:47I would hope that you're either our dear, dear
- 11:49friends who are supporting us or you're going
- 11:51to watch the show or have. watched the show recently
- 11:55enough that we can spoil stuff but like john
- 11:58kennis does go on to run for senate yeah state
- 12:02senate yeah which feels like something that only
- 12:05someone with access to a lot of money can do
- 12:08and republican yeah oh god we're gonna get into
- 12:12that it was a different time kind of not really
- 12:16but also Maybe I'm ignorant about how much you
- 12:20make in baseball. Yeah, for context, they have
- 12:22so much money because he used to play for the
- 12:24Kansas City Royals. Yes, the Kansas City Royals.
- 12:30He was the third baseman for the Kansas City
- 12:31Royals. I guess you make millions of dollars
- 12:34that way. And then he also owns a car wash company.
- 12:38Yeah, a series of car washes. Yes. Which I guess
- 12:42they live in such a rich neighborhood that people
- 12:44are all the time just, like, taking their cars
- 12:46to the car wash. I guess also for Kansas City,
- 12:49this is a lot. I get. I honestly, I don't have
- 12:53the cultural touchstones. Me neither. But they're
- 12:55rich. They're really rich. They're rich enough
- 12:57that, like, I don't think money is ever a problem
- 12:59for them. For anything. They can get out of almost
- 13:01anything. They have all the resources in the
- 13:04world. And the kids go to Buckner Hall, which
- 13:07is a fancy private school. No fancy private school
- 13:09uniforms. Anyways, yeah, the next scene, Bae's
- 13:13in the car with her mom, and she, on the street,
- 13:17she spots a picture, a street art of a girl holding
- 13:21an axe. I wonder if we're gonna see that again.
- 13:24This is such a teen thing to do. Like, you can
- 13:28see her baiting her mom. She knows her mom isn't
- 13:31gonna like it. And she's like, look at that.
- 13:34Like she wants so badly. I feel so bad for her.
- 13:38But also I was like, bae, come on, know your
- 13:40audience. That's true. You're from a rich white
- 13:44family. Why are they like graffiti, quote unquote,
- 13:48street art? Yeah. But she brings up, she uses
- 13:52that moment to be like, hey, I have a crazy question.
- 13:56And I cannot believe they said yes, knowing what
- 13:59I know about them now. To go to a genetic counselor.
- 14:03And then, yeah, six weeks later, they find out
- 14:06their bae is not their bio daughter. But who
- 14:08is? We don't know. And then that, of course,
- 14:12the hospital mixed up and they might have switched
- 14:15the bracelets or whatnot. Which they say so casually.
- 14:18Oh, it happens. Anyway. Yeah. Also, we've already
- 14:22contacted the mother who has your daughter, your
- 14:26biological daughter. Like current Regina and
- 14:28Daphne show up. pretty much immediately i do
- 14:31love the establishing shot we get of regina's
- 14:35house before they've revealed like the mic drop
- 14:38reveal that daphne is deaf i do think it's cool
- 14:41like you see the house first of all is much more
- 14:44working class much smaller and we meet two women
- 14:47and the teen have his red hair and you're like
- 14:50oh obviously this is katherine right it's his
- 14:52daughter and then also Daphne does not respond
- 14:56to when the car whistles and then the landline
- 14:59phone flashes instead of rings. Regina answers
- 15:03the phone and goes, hello? Yes, this is she.
- 15:06And then Daphne turns her head and goes. I love.
- 15:10And then. A touchstone of this show is like a
- 15:13long shot on Daphne reacting to something. That's
- 15:17true. With like confusion and concern. Katie
- 15:21LeClaire's got this really specific way she moves
- 15:23her eyebrows. She's got great facial expressions.
- 15:26She does have great facial expressions. And that's
- 15:29deaf culture. Should we talk about how we feel
- 15:32about Katie LeClaire a little? Yeah, we need
- 15:33to talk. Okay, yeah. Daphne is played by Katie
- 15:36LeClaire, who is hard of hearing in real life
- 15:40because she has Meniere's disease. But she, that
- 15:43deaf accent, that's not real. No. She is faking
- 15:47that deaf accent. She had to get a voice coach
- 15:49for it. I... I did read an interview with her
- 15:53in the San Diego Entertainer magazine from 2011.
- 15:57They just did whatever interviews they could
- 16:00at the time. But apparently they were like, oh,
- 16:03why did you learn sign? She was like, oh, I just
- 16:05need a foreign language to graduate high school.
- 16:07This was before she got Meniere's disease. Yeah.
- 16:10But it runs in the family. Her sister and her
- 16:11father have it. And her sister was an ASL teacher
- 16:15at the school. So she was like, it was fun because
- 16:18I was 17 and my sister was my teacher. And she
- 16:21took it for one year. And then that kind of was
- 16:25it. And then three years later, when she's 20,
- 16:28she gets diagnosed with Meniere's disease. But
- 16:31it's not very clear if she started learning ASL
- 16:33more after she was diagnosed. But it seems that
- 16:36she only started learning ASL because of the
- 16:39show. And don't get me wrong, her ASL is pretty
- 16:42good. It's not fluent, but it's very good. And
- 16:46they have an ASL coach there helping her out.
- 16:50Yeah, it was an interesting choice for the show.
- 16:54Definitely an interesting choice. I still don't
- 16:58know how I feel about it. I know. It's a tough
- 17:02choice. I think she did the role with a lot of
- 17:08respect. Yeah. I think now they probably wouldn't
- 17:12have made that choice for casting. Definitely
- 17:15not. Or I would hope not. I would hope not. I
- 17:19think... No, her song is nice. She also looks
- 17:23just like Katherine Kanish. So I think they really
- 17:26cast it correctly for a lookalike. But yeah,
- 17:29I think they really could have gotten any other
- 17:32deaf redhead. Capital D deaf redhead. I don't
- 17:36know. But also, then who am I to say that she's
- 17:39not actually deaf? I don't know. I'm hesitant
- 17:41to say she's capital D deaf and more that she's
- 17:44hard of hearing. Yeah. Because I also don't know
- 17:47if she continues to sign after the show. It doesn't
- 17:50seem the case with her social media. Oh, also,
- 17:53she was 24 when they started filming. Cool. Then
- 17:55I don't feel weird at all about saying Daphne's
- 17:57so hot. She's so hot. She's so hot. Like, wish
- 18:02they had cast maybe someone else for many reasons,
- 18:06but she's so hot. Obviously, she looks like she
- 18:10belongs in that family. So Daphne, as we learn.
- 18:14we'll go back to the scene now where they reveal
- 18:16that she's she's deaf which oh yeah it's kind
- 18:21of crazy that they it was an interesting choice
- 18:24that they were like have her walk into the frame
- 18:26yeah two weeks later at the genetic counselor's
- 18:28office yeah you can see like her hearing aids
- 18:32are visible but then also when she sees everybody
- 18:36she's like it's nice to meet you, but she also
- 18:39signs, it's nice to meet you. Yeah, she simcams
- 18:42it. Which I thought, there's definitely a producer
- 18:46in the background saying, we need to have her
- 18:49sign so that they know she's deaf. And then everyone
- 18:51goes, and she's deaf, done. Yeah, it's a big
- 18:55twist. Which I get, it's a shock. The Kennishes
- 18:59have never met a single person that's different
- 19:01from them, literally ever, it seems. But also,
- 19:04most hearing parents, The first deaf person they
- 19:08meet is their child. I just find it interesting
- 19:11that she SimComs that, but then Daphne does not
- 19:14really SimCom with the Kennishes at all until
- 19:17they start signing. That is true. That's a good
- 19:20point. I think maybe she was like, well, let
- 19:22me just, I mean, maybe they don't see my clear
- 19:26hearing aids. Maybe I'll just go, um, nice to
- 19:28meet you. And that's the only sign I'll do until
- 19:31they learn. Yeah. And then, yeah, of course,
- 19:33Catherine looks like she's about to have a heart
- 19:35attack. She literally looks like she's going
- 19:37to faint. Like, it bothers me so much. It's realistic,
- 19:41I know. But it bothers me so much how much they
- 19:44exaggerate John and Catherine being like, she's
- 19:47not OK. Something's wrong with her. And that
- 19:50is absolutely what a lot of human parents do.
- 19:53So they bring Regina and Daphne to their house.
- 19:56And then there's some exposition where Daphne.
- 19:59is telling Regina, oh, John used to be the third
- 20:02baseman for the Kansas City Royals. Now he owns
- 20:04a car wash. Hence why their house is like 20
- 20:08houses piled on top of each other. Yeah, there's
- 20:10so many structures on their property. Yeah. And
- 20:13then Catherine answers the door and goes, we're
- 20:17so excited to meet you, to see you. God, these
- 20:21scenes are rough. Like, yell talks and every
- 20:23dead person and maybe you also, like, cringing
- 20:27in pain. Also, again, she wouldn't have Googled
- 20:32some stuff. She was just like, okay, let's just
- 20:38go into this. I'm just going to talk really loud.
- 20:41Yeah, I don't know. She wouldn't have texted
- 20:42Regina to be like, I have some follow -up questions.
- 20:45I don't know. That is a great point. She could
- 20:47have just been like, I'm so excited to have you
- 20:49over for lunch. Is there anything I need to know
- 20:52beforehand? Yeah, she also doesn't ask, does
- 20:54anybody have any... I guess maybe that's like
- 20:56a new thing. I feel like in 2011. Oh, as about
- 21:00dietary restrictions? Yeah, because Daphne's
- 21:01also a vegetarian. Right. Like you. And so I
- 21:06feel like people ask. That's a normal thing to
- 21:09ask. People almost always ask. In 2011, yes.
- 21:11Yeah. Allergies? Right. Yeah. Well, she made
- 21:16chicken enchiladas. And she had to take the chicken
- 21:19out of the chicken enchiladas. And you can't
- 21:21take the chicken out of chicken enchiladas. Okay,
- 21:23real talk. Do we think those chicken enchiladas
- 21:25were good? no i think they're so bland yeah i'm
- 21:29so sorry to kathryn yeah i was shocked that that
- 21:32was the choice she made do we think that's maybe
- 21:34a suggestion because regina is latina do okay
- 21:38do we think that's why because then in the next
- 21:41scene she point blank asks regina are you mexican
- 21:44which is so crazy crazy just the way she does
- 21:49it if she'd just been like Hey, where are you?
- 21:53Like, where's your family from? Where's your
- 21:54family from? Because we want to know where Bay
- 21:55is from. Exactly. Our lovely daughter that we've
- 21:58been raising. And Bay also wants to know where
- 22:00she's from. Instead of going, are you Mexican?
- 22:03That is. That was a crazy thing to say. And of
- 22:05course, Regina, who we also, I forgot to mention,
- 22:08is played by Constance Marie, who I know so well
- 22:11from the George Lopez show. Love her. Hate Regina
- 22:14so much. Yeah, Regina as a character is a tough
- 22:17one. Yeah, she's tough, but also hot. Another
- 22:21MILF. Another MILF. But yeah, she does play Mama
- 22:25Bear in this case. Well, first of all, she's
- 22:27like, no, I am half Puerto Rican. Yeah. Which
- 22:30means Bay is a quarter Puerto Rican. So Adriana,
- 22:34Regina's mother, is Puerto Rican. Yes. Who is
- 22:38not there at the meeting, by the way. I found
- 22:41it very fun how later in the episode, Adriana
- 22:44keeps popping up and everyone's like, who is
- 22:46this? And I'm like, you wins. introduce her that
- 22:49is bae's grandmother right she lives with them
- 22:52yeah i don't know maybe adriana the other has
- 22:54something something to do that day she was employed
- 22:57she was at work probably yeah but i just later
- 22:59on when bae like runs into her so casually and
- 23:02daphne's like oh i guess this is your grandma
- 23:04i'm like why are people bae is really getting
- 23:07the short end of the stick daphne gets a house
- 23:09tour daphne gets to meet everyone and bae has
- 23:12to like break into daphne's house later on i
- 23:15know just to learn but anyways i'm getting ahead
- 23:17of myself i know yeah anyways when katherine
- 23:21yell talks at Daphne Regina does play mama bear
- 23:24and says yelling doesn't help just look at her
- 23:26and speak normally which i think is a nice this
- 23:29show is clearly made for hearing audiences so
- 23:33i think a lot of the lines they drop i'm like
- 23:36this is for a hearing person to understand like
- 23:38oh maybe if i run to a deaf person at Starbucks
- 23:42i won't yell talk at them i'm gonna do what Regina
- 23:45says and look at them and speak normally not
- 23:48too fast not too slow like she says and then
- 23:50bae I know Bay is going through it, but she is
- 23:53talking about Daphne in front of her. And I do
- 23:57understand her pain. You know, everyone is paying
- 24:00attention to Daphne. They are showering her with
- 24:03love. Yeah. I mean, it sucks. They literally
- 24:07light Daphne in the show in a way where she's
- 24:09like glowing in the room at all times. I know.
- 24:12And then also interesting to see that Bay is
- 24:16seeing the signing and she's curious about it.
- 24:19But she's also feeling a little insecure. But
- 24:21she's curious and she's like, I want to know
- 24:24what they're saying. Yeah, she's the first one
- 24:26that seems genuinely curious about it and like
- 24:29open to it. Which tracks for her character because
- 24:32she does go eventually to learn and actually
- 24:34sign very quickly. Yeah, I mean. Not for bonding
- 24:39and supporting her new kind of sister, though.
- 24:41Definitely not. No. Bae's motivations aren't
- 24:45always coming from the right place. She does
- 24:48say, when Daphne is just, like, speaking normally,
- 24:51Bae goes, I can't understand her. Yeah, that's
- 24:54what... Which is so crazy, because everyone is
- 24:58listening to her and can understand her fine.
- 25:00I think she was just moody. Everyone is giving
- 25:03her attention. She's insecure. And also, like...
- 25:07Regina's not being super friendly and is also
- 25:10not really trying to get to know Bae in this
- 25:12situation. Okay, thank you. I felt crazy watching
- 25:16because she really is just like ignoring her.
- 25:20Yeah, and I think Regina's being so defensive.
- 25:23She's so right to be defensive. Because then
- 25:25John and... It's not in a place of learning about
- 25:28one another. At least John and Catherine are
- 25:31trying. They are. In a very strange way, but
- 25:35I think Regina's kind of like... closing in yes
- 25:39but cara they are in the kitchen trying to be
- 25:43like can we take daphne back that is so true
- 25:45and then they go but of course regina can't have
- 25:48bay that's the conversation they have i think
- 25:52i'm thinking about later on but that is the first
- 25:55few episodes they are like we want custody Because
- 25:58Regina is an unfit mother, which is absolutely
- 26:01insane. It is insane. She is so on the defensive
- 26:04so fast in a way that makes me be like, yeah,
- 26:08I'd be stressed too. Like she's so mean to Catherine
- 26:11right away. I know. It's upsetting. And Regina
- 26:16doesn't know anything about bae because she hasn't
- 26:18made any effort. She hasn't asked a single question.
- 26:20She doesn't ask her a single question. And then
- 26:22the parents are talking downstairs. Bae literally
- 26:24goes upstairs and is blasting music in her room.
- 26:28She's not even there anymore. Right. And no one
- 26:31goes to check on her. No. Regina doesn't think,
- 26:35let me go upstairs and meet my daughter. Maybe
- 26:37say, hey. Maybe say, hey. Sup, girl? Do you like
- 26:41the drawer? Yeah. No, none of that. None of that.
- 26:44Yeah, I feel so bad for Bae in this situation.
- 26:48But meanwhile, while Bay is being moody, Toby
- 26:50is giving Daphne a tour of the house. And we
- 26:53find out that there are tennis courts, plural.
- 26:56Yeah. There's a gazebo. There's a swimming pool.
- 27:00A guest house. We'll come back to that later.
- 27:02There's a guest house. Most of these things,
- 27:04which we never see, by the way. We do see the
- 27:07swimming pool. And he says a basketball court,
- 27:10but I think it's just a hoop on the driveway.
- 27:12Yeah, I think it's just the hoop, which we never
- 27:16see them play tennis. If I was designing this
- 27:19house, if I was designing the Kennish house,
- 27:21I would maybe swap out. It seems like they use
- 27:23that basketball court in their driveway a whole
- 27:26lot more than they use the tennis court. That's
- 27:29all I'm saying. That's true. And then they have
- 27:31several garages, I assume, for those multiple
- 27:35cars. And then Toby also has one for his music
- 27:37and then Bae for art. So, yeah, it's a whole
- 27:40new world for Daphne. Yeah, Daphne picks up a
- 27:43basketball and plays 1v1. b -ball with toby and
- 27:47we learned she's got the athletic genes from
- 27:49john that's a big one really establishes right
- 27:52away she's a kennish she's a kennish through
- 27:54and through and toby i guess is a little athletic
- 27:57but he's a music boy yeah i think later on there's
- 28:01some talk about how he like quit baseball he
- 28:03did quit baseball because his dad he wanted his
- 28:07dad to be off his back or whatever yeah but he
- 28:09was like very good apparently famously ryan is
- 28:13a really good baseball player in high school
- 28:15musical too so and then while toby and daphne
- 28:19are outside the canisters are talking to regina
- 28:21and they were like so the deaf thing why crazy
- 28:27and basically yeah regina is like so daphne went
- 28:31deaf at age three from meningitis meningitis
- 28:34for context is a bacterial infection and it can
- 28:37damage hair cells in the cochlea And she can
- 28:40hear some ambient noise with the hearing aids.
- 28:43That must have been extremely traumatizing for
- 28:46the two of them. Like, bacterial meningitis can
- 28:48straight up kill you. Yeah, it's really deadly.
- 28:51Yeah, so glad that Daphne just lost her hearing,
- 28:56honestly. Yeah, it's like, glad that everything
- 28:58seems fine. Yeah. Seems like it worked out as
- 29:02well as it could have. Like, she's a perfectly...
- 29:06like happy human being and that's yeah she seems
- 29:09fine but then john kind of implies that it's
- 29:12regina's fault that daphne got sick because he's
- 29:14like where were you yeah and like how did she
- 29:18get it and she goes well it's a bacteria she
- 29:21caught it i didn't like give it to her and cough
- 29:25on her or leave her out on the street yeah it's
- 29:29a rough scene to watch it's tough it's really
- 29:32tough because you Yeah, it's a tough scene. Yeah,
- 29:35the Kenishes are definitely going on attack.
- 29:37And Regina is not doing herself any favors in
- 29:41the way she sort of responds. No, she's not.
- 29:44She's doing, like, very one -word answers. Like,
- 29:46well, she's deaf. Or, like, she's fine. Yeah.
- 29:48And I'm maybe understanding that John and Catherine
- 29:54are so new to this. And that they both need to
- 29:59give each other some grace. Yeah, everyone, which
- 30:03is kind of what Regina tries to say is like,
- 30:05let's take some time to process. Yeah. And then,
- 30:09yeah, John and Catherine, again, are very new
- 30:13to this. Daphne is likely the first deaf person
- 30:16they probably ever met. For context, I am deaf,
- 30:19but I'm pretty sure I'm also, my whole family's
- 30:22hearing. I'm pretty sure I'm also my family's
- 30:25first deaf person they have ever met. Like, for
- 30:28most human parents of deaf children, the first
- 30:30deaf person they will ever meet is a child. And
- 30:32I get it. They are trying to learn. Yeah. But
- 30:37the way they're coming across is insane. And
- 30:40it is only going to get worse in this episode.
- 30:42And they're so eager just to snatch her. Yeah,
- 30:46they really want to take her away right away.
- 30:48Yeah. And that's why I think it's so wild that
- 30:51Regina then just leaves. She just leaves Daphne
- 30:54at the house. Oh, yeah. She's like, I gotta go.
- 30:58Did she make other plans for this day where they're,
- 31:01like, hanging out with her? No, I think she was
- 31:03like, I'm sick of this. And Daphne seems to be
- 31:06having fun. I'm gonna leave her. Also, hasn't
- 31:08spent any time with Bae. No. Bae's in the room
- 31:11having a menjiebee. Yeah, and she said, all right,
- 31:14I think I'm gonna bounce. That's another thing
- 31:16Regina and Bae have in common. They both love
- 31:17to dip out of a situation that they don't want
- 31:20to be in. That's true. That's a good point. Yeah.
- 31:23Liam is like... What's going on? You're not telling
- 31:27me what's wrong. But Bae's being very defensive.
- 31:31I forget. I glossed over Liam's presence in this
- 31:34episode completely. Now he's in this. I know.
- 31:39He's very handsome. He seems nice enough. He
- 31:43doesn't seem like he likes Bae at all. No, but
- 31:47there must be something because Bae is kind of
- 31:50like the outcast of the school. Yeah. She seems
- 31:53to have, like, some friends, but, like, she's
- 31:56certainly not popular. She struggles in school
- 31:58academically. And she's kind of like the quirky
- 32:01weird girl. It seems like maybe Liam is, like,
- 32:04dating her to piss off his dad. Is kind of the
- 32:09vibe that I get. Because he's not really interested
- 32:12in anything about her life. I just don't see,
- 32:16like... how the two of them are compatible. Well,
- 32:20they're not, because spoiler alert. It does not
- 32:22work. It does not work out. Well, Faye says,
- 32:23I think we need a break when he is asking her
- 32:26questions. And then John brings Daphne home to
- 32:30East Riverside. That particular scene was interesting.
- 32:33So John drops Daphne off, and then he's like,
- 32:35oh, wait, you forgot your sweater. But then Daphne
- 32:37doesn't hear him, and she goes in the house.
- 32:40Also, in the scene, we meet Adriana for the first
- 32:42time. Just like, hello, goodbye, goodnight. But
- 32:45he realizes, like, oh, wait. She can't hear me.
- 32:48And then, like, noise ensues from, like, the
- 32:52surrounding environment, like the ice cream trucks
- 32:54and the horns honking and the dogs barking, which
- 32:58I think was interesting because he's suddenly
- 33:01thinking, like, oh, she can't hear these things
- 33:04I'm hearing right now. Yeah. I guess it was trying
- 33:08to accomplish two things then because they're
- 33:11also trying to imply that because the neighborhood
- 33:14is loud. He's worried it's unsafe. Yeah, like,
- 33:18I don't know, dogs barking, dogs bark everywhere.
- 33:20Drops her off, sees an ominous ice cream truck.
- 33:24And he goes back to Catherine and he's like,
- 33:25that place was scary, there was bail bonds on
- 33:29every corner. And Catherine's like, we need to
- 33:31get out of there. Anyways, next day, Bay is drinking
- 33:36coffee. God forbid. Bay is literally... meant
- 33:42to be i get it she says i have a nose ring i'm
- 33:46drinking coffee and she whips out a cigarette
- 33:48and then her mom's like what are you doing she
- 33:50goes living the life i was meant to live and
- 33:53she whips out a cigarette which so are you implying
- 33:58i think she's being like racist and shitty towards
- 34:01these people that she just met that's what i
- 34:04think i think she's like this is yeah this is
- 34:06how people in east riverside live like now that
- 34:10i'm a quarter puerto rican i'm gonna like underage
- 34:13smoke it's very weird i need to i need to pierce
- 34:16my nose drink coffee everyone drinks coffee yeah
- 34:18it's so it's a little too on the nose like teen
- 34:21rebelling for me i wouldn't find it if it was
- 34:26just the nose piercing because that seems normal
- 34:30enough but the cigarette really was over the
- 34:32edge bay it was so dramatic Anyways, yeah, the
- 34:38next scene, Sean goes to Regina's house back
- 34:40in East Riverside. And he's like, and he's finally
- 34:43used Google. Hey, I just found out about this
- 34:47really cool new thing. It's called the cochlear
- 34:49implant. And she's like, yes, I have a deaf daughter.
- 34:53I'm well aware of what a cochlear implant is.
- 34:55For context, I have a cochlear implant. So, yeah,
- 34:58I am very well aware. And Regina goes on a little
- 35:03monologue. where everything she says is 100 %
- 35:07right. She's like, the surgery costs about 100
- 35:10grand, not including speech therapy and audiology
- 35:13appointments, which is so true. And then, of
- 35:16course, John is like, well, why wouldn't you
- 35:18want it for her? And she was like, well, if I
- 35:21wanted for her, I would have gotten it. Like,
- 35:23I'm a good mom. Yeah. And I believe, like, Regina
- 35:26totally would have gotten it. She would have
- 35:29made it work. Although we do learn some stuff
- 35:32about... her later that makes me think maybe
- 35:34she wouldn't have made it work but at this moment
- 35:37I believe her I believe her and also Daphne is
- 35:41fine with the CI like she's fine yeah and then
- 35:45Regina rightfully says like it's not a cure I
- 35:48think of course John and Catherine are looking
- 35:49at it through like the miracle lens of disability
- 35:51like oh you have a disability let's fix it yeah
- 35:55and cure it and she was like well it's not a
- 35:57cure it's listening will always require work
- 36:00and She ate with that. And she's so right. But,
- 36:05yeah, I think that was a very interesting contrast
- 36:08of, like, the Kenishes going right into the medical
- 36:12model of disability, which is, like, the belief
- 36:14that disability reduces the quality of life and
- 36:16that we need to correct or diminish the disability
- 36:18with appropriate medical intervention, like cochlear
- 36:21implants. And then Regina's on the side of more,
- 36:24like, the social model, which is seen as, like,
- 36:27deafness is a diverse expression of human life.
- 36:31And she focuses on deaf identity and embracing
- 36:33disabled people for who they are rather than
- 36:36what needs to be fixed. And then, yeah, I think
- 36:40that was perfectly encapsulated in the sentence.
- 36:43Regina says she likes being deaf and John says
- 36:46no one likes being deaf. John, who has never
- 36:50met a deaf person in his life. Yeah. Ouch. Yeah.
- 36:55I do understand why this scene happened because
- 36:57I'm sure many... Hearing people were watching
- 37:01this going, why doesn't she have a cochlear implant?
- 37:04And the writers were like, well, we need to explain
- 37:05why. Yeah, I am glad they got it out of the way
- 37:09so fast. I think we're going to get a little
- 37:11bit more cochlear talk in the next like two episodes.
- 37:13We do get some cochlear talk. I can talk the
- 37:16whole series, honestly. But I remember watching
- 37:19that in 2011 with my cochlear. I only have one
- 37:22cochlear implant at the time. I got the first
- 37:25one implanted when I was five and then the second
- 37:27one implanted when I was 16. Oh, I didn't know
- 37:30that. Yeah, right one, five, left one, 16. Is
- 37:34there a reason to do it that way? I think just
- 37:36back then it was more common for insurance or
- 37:41it was just more common to only do one year at
- 37:43a time instead of bilateral. There was a bunch
- 37:46of reasons. One, insurance only covered one year.
- 37:48And my parents were like, well, we can't afford
- 37:50that. Again, it's $100 ,000 per year. That's
- 37:54very insurance of them. Per year? I thought it
- 37:57was total. No, per year. Yeah. And that's in
- 38:022011 money. I bet it's gone up. It was about,
- 38:06it was over 100K for my left year when I was
- 38:1016 because I saw the bill and thank God insurance
- 38:12paid for it after my, God bless my mother who
- 38:15battled insurance for quite a while. I also had
- 38:18some hearing in my left year, some residual hearing,
- 38:20but I ended up losing all of it. It was my own
- 38:25decision when I was 16 to just get the second
- 38:28implant. So I remember that surgery very well.
- 38:31And the audiology appointments and whatnot. But
- 38:33yeah, it's years and years of speech therapy
- 38:36and audiology appointments. I still go to the
- 38:39audiologist about once or twice a year. And speech
- 38:42therapy I did for 13 years. Wow. Yeah. But for
- 38:46like someone like Regina, that is not feasible.
- 38:49No. Not in the slightest. I come from an upper
- 38:52middle class family. from long island like that
- 38:54was definitely something they made work but like
- 38:57i would say most families can't which is why
- 39:01daphne is at the carlton school for the deaf
- 39:03yes i got so happy when we went there it's a
- 39:07way better vibe over there yeah and daphne is
- 39:10signing outside with emmet we love emmet god
- 39:14he's so cute right away yeah played by sean burry
- 39:18who is deaf in real life and you can tell by
- 39:21his signing. He is signing a million miles a
- 39:24minute. He's so good. Yeah, when I was taking
- 39:28sign language, I was like, I have to get better
- 39:31because I have to be really good when I finally
- 39:34meet Sean Birdie because I need to impress him.
- 39:37When I marry Sean Birdie. When I marry him, yeah.
- 39:41Oh, I was so obsessed with him. Yeah. But this
- 39:43is a really cool scene to see just because this
- 39:46is the first time we've seen two deaf people
- 39:48sign. on network TV. I think this is pretty groundbreaking
- 39:52at the time. But then also, this is the beginning
- 39:55of noticing that the English captions are kind
- 39:58of different from the ASL that Daphne and Emmett
- 40:02are signing. So, like, for example, something
- 40:04I wrote down was that Emmett said, in another
- 40:07life, the caption said, in another life, you
- 40:10probably wouldn't have become deaf. But, like,
- 40:14the way he signed it was, in another life, you
- 40:16hearing. So why didn't the caption just say,
- 40:19in another life you would've been hearing? And
- 40:21then another example was, the caption said, one
- 40:26change and everything changes. But then Emmett
- 40:29signed domino effect. Like, why didn't they just
- 40:32say domino effect? And I think it would've been
- 40:34cooler to say. Yeah. That would've been way cooler
- 40:39to say, one thing changes and everything changes.
- 40:42That's so clunky. Like, why didn't you just say?
- 40:46It's like the domino effect. That's poetic, Emmett.
- 40:49Yeah. I do think these are words whipped straight
- 40:53from the writer's grips. I do, yeah. I do wonder
- 40:56about that. I was just at the movies last night.
- 40:59We went to see Splitsville and it was open caption.
- 41:02And even... The captions sometimes were different
- 41:06from what the actors were saying. It drives me
- 41:09crazy. It's like that on Netflix shows too, all
- 41:11the time. I do wonder if they're just running
- 41:13the scripts and then they're not like adjusting
- 41:16for ad libs. I think that's what is happening.
- 41:18I think the writers have a script and then I
- 41:21think they throw the captions on the screen.
- 41:22And then maybe there's a separate ASL coach who
- 41:26is kind of like... saying like you can sign this
- 41:29but it's not perfectly matching with what they're
- 41:32saying yeah i mean if it's also if it's sean
- 41:35birdie looking at the script and then being like
- 41:37okay this is how i'm going to sign it yeah but
- 41:40no one's double checking with him no one is double
- 41:43checking his signing and the words and changing
- 41:46it and this is going to be a reoccurring theme
- 41:48throughout the entire show this is something
- 41:50that does drive me a little crazy but it's okay
- 41:54Which drives me crazy later. The most is the
- 41:56sim comment, which we will get to. Yeah, thank
- 41:59God we didn't have to deal with much of that
- 42:01in this first episode. No, not yet. But yeah,
- 42:05Bae is in these riversides spying on Regina for
- 42:07some reason. I think because Regina hasn't spoken
- 42:10a word to her. Yeah, spying on Regina in the
- 42:14second most ridiculous outfit in this episode.
- 42:17What is she wearing? Like a newsboy cap and these
- 42:20big glasses. it's so in her car like she looks
- 42:25so bmw yeah she looks so sus like and just like
- 42:29sticks out like a sore thumb and a neighborhood
- 42:32boy whose name we don't know yet rightfully says
- 42:35get out yeah what you don't belong here and he
- 42:40says you know you you must be a rich white girl
- 42:43looking for drugs and she goes i'm not a rich
- 42:46white girl and he goes you're in a bmw Her saying,
- 42:49I'm actually not a rich white girl is so crazy
- 42:52because you know that's how Bae feels now. That's
- 42:54true. Like, Bae immediately was like, I shed
- 42:59all of the privilege that I have come from. And
- 43:02honey, that's not how it works. Yeah. Your parents
- 43:05are still paying for your college. And then she
- 43:07goes, this is not a pipe. The name of the episode.
- 43:10Yeah. I love when they say the name of the episode
- 43:13in the episode. And Ty, the neighborhood boy,
- 43:17who we learn his name is Ty, is smitten immediately,
- 43:21it seems, because she has quoted Magritte. Everything
- 43:26is not what it seems. You may see a rich white
- 43:29girl, but actually, I'm a queer Puerto Rican.
- 43:32Anyways, now we're back at Carlton, and John
- 43:35is watching her play basketball. Yeah, why is
- 43:38this man at her school? How did he get in? How
- 43:41did he get in? This happens a lot. He is... John
- 43:44Kennish is the king of overstepping. Yeah. Also,
- 43:49I watched this stuff, but I was reading the lyrics,
- 43:52and there was song lyrics in it, and some song
- 43:56was playing with the lyrics, I can hear, but
- 43:58I can't hear. Which I think is a little honest.
- 44:01The music supervisor had a real fun time with
- 44:05that one. Yeah. Then Daphne does a very easy
- 44:09layup, but everyone acts like she just did a
- 44:11slam dunk. And John is like, oh my god. My daughter
- 44:16is so athletic and cool. Anyways, do you want
- 44:19to go to Buckner? Yeah, he really, he's like,
- 44:23you know where you should play. Buckner. Because
- 44:27I don't think isolating yourself in a death bubble
- 44:29is a good idea. And you should go to a regular
- 44:32school with regular kids. John Kennish has never
- 44:38seen a line that he doesn't want to cross. And
- 44:40Daphne, oh God, I want to shake her by the shoulders
- 44:43and be like, stand up for yourself. Because she,
- 44:47what I think she wants to say is, I'm happy here
- 44:50and I enjoy my school. She really has some father
- 44:57stuff going on. That is also true. She's not
- 45:00used to having a father figure. So maybe she's
- 45:02like, well, this is what dads do. And he also
- 45:05asked her to keep it a secret from Regina, this
- 45:07whole conversation. That's a huge red flag. Yeah.
- 45:11This is the first instance where we see, like,
- 45:13I know it's her dad, so she gets a pass a little
- 45:17bit, but Daphne loves men. Daphne's like a guy's
- 45:20girl, for sure. She really is. She's got no girlfriends.
- 45:24Yeah. She loves, yeah, her guy best friend, who's
- 45:28so obviously in love with her. And then she does
- 45:31whatever John wants her to do. That is true.
- 45:34Daddy issues. Yeah, she's kind of a doormat with
- 45:37men. God. I know. Poor thing. I know. Yeah. So
- 45:43she keeps it a secret from her mom. And she ends
- 45:46up touring Bucknell. It's so insane that they
- 45:49go on a tour. Without telling Regina. Right.
- 45:52Where does Regina think she is? They would have
- 45:54had to sign her out of school. It's a school
- 45:57day. Bay is a school. They have an interpreter
- 46:00with Daphne, played by Paul Racey, who I love.
- 46:03He's a co -writer in real life, but he was in
- 46:05Sound of Metal, also my favorite movie in the
- 46:07whole entire world. Oh, wow. Yeah. He's the interpreter
- 46:10for Daphne, and then they mute the audio, which
- 46:14the show loves to do, to show her perspective,
- 46:17which I don't mind. I do find it helpful. As
- 46:20a hearing person, I do enjoy the drama when they
- 46:22cut the audio. And then someone asked Bae, who's
- 46:26the girl, and she goes, um, that's just a scholarship
- 46:28student that my parents are sponsoring. They
- 46:31also didn't tell Bae they were taking Daphne
- 46:33on the tour. Yeah, that is also their fault.
- 46:35I don't love that Bae lied. But also, what do
- 46:39you say? That is my sister and not sister. The
- 46:42family didn't like sit down and discuss like
- 46:45what they should tell people also. No. Or like
- 46:48when they should tell people. No one is talking
- 46:50to each other about anything. But yeah. Daphne
- 46:53decides to walk around on her own, and she spots
- 46:56Liam. Oh, my God. Who whips out his fingerspelling
- 46:59talents, L -I -A -M. It makes me so mad that
- 47:05she's so charmed by him immediately. It's four
- 47:08letters. And he acts like he deserves an award.
- 47:13He's like, I can fingerspell. I'm the shit. And
- 47:17then he's like, you should give me a sign name.
- 47:20Oh, but then we also learn about Daphne's sign
- 47:22name, which is the letter D on the chest. And
- 47:26it's the sign for happy because she's happy all
- 47:28the time, I guess, which I think is fitting.
- 47:30She has a very smiley personality. She has a
- 47:33very smiley personality. I will say this first
- 47:35interaction with Liam reveals truly how corny
- 47:40Daphne is. She's such a cornball. Yeah, the sense
- 47:44of humor kind of killed me because Liam asked
- 47:46for a name sign and Daphne. informs him and also
- 47:49every hearing audience like that's not how it
- 47:52works a deaf person has to name you yeah and
- 47:55then he was like what's the sign for extremely
- 47:57handsome or something yeah and then she she says
- 48:00it's against the rules or maybe he says it's
- 48:03against the rules oh it's against the rules but
- 48:05that's Daphne's brand of humor it's painful and
- 48:09it's for men it's catered to men yeah it's Only
- 48:15the men are laughing, and they're really only
- 48:17laughing because of how hot she is. I know. But
- 48:20we get the tiniest morsel of deaf culture in
- 48:22the scene by saying a deaf person has anemia.
- 48:24So there we go. And then Bae in the parking lot
- 48:27at Buck knows, like, so what is going on? Why
- 48:30didn't you tell me? Yeah, why didn't you tell
- 48:33me? Again, the fact that her parents are, like,
- 48:37moving this girl into her school and Regina hasn't
- 48:41even bothered to send her a text, I don't think.
- 48:43No. Just nothing. No interest whatsoever. Yeah.
- 48:47And then John goes, what's in the nose? Kevin,
- 48:49what's in the nose? Several days have gone by
- 48:51at this point. Sorry, that's really dad coded.
- 48:54My dad loves me so much. It would also take him
- 48:57a long... I've gotten full tattoos, visible tattoos,
- 49:00and come home and he has not noticed for many
- 49:02days. Dad's too beefy getting that. But in that
- 49:05moment, it does really hit hard considering Bae
- 49:08did it to get her parents' attention. And her
- 49:11dad is not. Get in that. No. He does not care.
- 49:15Yeah. And then Toby meets Emmett. Yeah. Daphne
- 49:18bumps into Toby just as Emmett goes to pick her
- 49:20up on his motorcycle. And then Toby also gets
- 49:25an introduction to deaf culture. Asks some ignorant
- 49:28questions about Emmett. In front of Emmett. Without
- 49:31talking to Emmett. This was rough. This was so
- 49:34painful. Knowing that they kind of become friends
- 49:37later on. It helps. Helps. But he's like, well,
- 49:41why doesn't he speak? And then Daphne, of course,
- 49:43has to do the, I must inform the hearing audience.
- 49:47Some people speak and some don't. Yeah, she does
- 49:51a lot of like, it does feel a little like a Wikipedia
- 49:54entry for like, why, like deaf people and speaking.
- 49:59I know, a lot of this pilot, which I get. They
- 50:02had to ease us in. They had to do it. But then
- 50:05at one point, Emmett calls Toby a moron and he
- 50:07does the sign for P -Brain, which is awesome.
- 50:09The sign for P -Brain is just like you pinch
- 50:11your fingers around your head. But then Daphne,
- 50:14Ally at this point, says Emmett said he loves
- 50:17your shoes. This happens a lot throughout the
- 50:19show. It does. With Daphne and Emmett. Yes. Which
- 50:24Emmett's not clueless. He can read her lips as
- 50:27she lies. Yes. So I think it must be. I think
- 50:31it's the two of them being silly together. I
- 50:33think it's an inside joke for them where he gets
- 50:36to be as mean as he wants about someone and knows
- 50:38that Daphne will sort of curtail it and make
- 50:42it fine. Also, at the same time, this is Daphne's
- 50:46brand new brother. She doesn't want to, like,
- 50:47call him an idiot. Totally. That being said,
- 50:51she does say to Toby, like, I'll interpret for
- 50:54you. And then fully just lies about what Emmett's
- 50:57saying. Yeah. And that... I think it was just
- 51:01not the time to call him an idiot. Yeah. But
- 51:04I don't like the... I didn't love the precedent
- 51:06it sets. I feel like Emmett's really snarky a
- 51:09lot of the time. Emmett is. And a lot of people...
- 51:12Bae does this later on, too, where she'll soften
- 51:15the blow of whatever he said when she's interpreting
- 51:18for him. And I can't tell... He usually doesn't
- 51:22call anyone out on it, so I'm assuming... He
- 51:25doesn't care or he thinks it's funny. I think
- 51:27he thinks it's funny to, like, say whatever he
- 51:30wants. And he knows that they're kind of going
- 51:32to dumb it down or soften the blow. Yeah. So
- 51:36people don't get hurt. And I think he's kind
- 51:38of like, ha, ha, ha, they all know ASL. So I
- 51:40can kind of sign whatever I want. Yeah. But if
- 51:44you're ever interpreting for a friend, don't
- 51:46do that. Don't lie about what they said. Yeah.
- 51:50Full access is signing. Is interpreting everything
- 51:54that a person says. Yeah. Even when they're being
- 51:57a dick. Yeah. Although Emmett was justified in
- 52:00calling Toby a moron in this case because he
- 52:02is acting like one. Yeah, he's not getting the
- 52:06hint. No. Anyways. So yeah, Daphne and Emmett
- 52:09hop on the motorcycle and John and Catherine
- 52:11see her on the motorcycle. And again, Catherine
- 52:15has a little meant to be. Yeah, we're going to
- 52:17get back to that later. Bae gets herself arrested.
- 52:20Well, before that, she decides to do street art
- 52:23in broad daylight. Right. And Ty catches her.
- 52:27Yeah, so she's already begging to be arrested.
- 52:30Broad daylight. But she doesn't get caught by
- 52:32the police. She gets caught by the sexy neighbor
- 52:34guy. Yeah. Bay gets arrested for using a fake
- 52:39ID to get beer. Which is so, you know she didn't
- 52:43want the beer. She really did just want to get
- 52:46arrested. She just wanted. To spend some time
- 52:50with her parents. Well, she just wanted to spend
- 52:53some time with her birth mother. She does not
- 52:56call her parents. Regina gets a call and thinks
- 52:59Daphne's been arrested, probably because the
- 53:01police say, your daughter is here. Right. Which
- 53:04is a good assumption. Yeah, she starts yelling
- 53:06about... Getting an interpreter. She needs an
- 53:08interpreter. But Bay doesn't need an interpreter.
- 53:11She shows up and it's Bay looking like a lost
- 53:15little puppy. I know. God, she's so... She is
- 53:21sympathetic in this episode. I feel very bad
- 53:23for her. And then Catherine comes in and admonishes
- 53:28her and she's like, what has gotten into you?
- 53:30And then... Regina pulls out of her body her
- 53:32choice. Yeah, her body, her choice. I don't know
- 53:35if this was the time. This was definitely not
- 53:37the time. She's also not the mom. But we just,
- 53:41yeah, we gotta establish the clear differences
- 53:43between the Kennishes. And the Vasquez. With
- 53:47parenting styles, absolutely. Yeah, with parenting
- 53:49styles and also with political bullies. And with
- 53:51political bullies, which will absolutely come
- 53:53into the fray next episode. This is something,
- 53:56the political bullies really come up. Then Catherine's
- 53:59like, by the way, I ran a security clearance
- 54:01on you and you have two DUIs. Yeah. What the
- 54:05hell? And they get into a full fight at the police
- 54:09station. And Bae, poor Bae, is like, please stop.
- 54:13Yeah, and then she just runs away again. Yeah,
- 54:15she runs away. Bae loves to dip. And I get it.
- 54:19I would have ran from this situation too. Yeah.
- 54:21And John and Catherine are driving around like,
- 54:24where's our daughter? Which is kind of crazy
- 54:26because you know there was tracking technology
- 54:29in 2011 on phones. My parents didn't do that.
- 54:33Yeah, but you know the Kennishes would have.
- 54:35Okay, I'll take that. Catherine's upset at herself
- 54:38for not realizing that Bae isn't her biological
- 54:42daughter. And then this is like... The only glimpse
- 54:45we get in this episode of like the parents processing
- 54:48this very traumatic event that happened. Yeah.
- 54:52We don't really get any of that. No. For like
- 54:55most of the show, like the whole show. They're
- 54:57not doing a lot of processing is the thing. No,
- 55:00I guess not. But I think she's just kind of like,
- 55:03how could I not have known? But it's okay because
- 55:06we love Bae and we love her so much. That is
- 55:08when I got emotional. Yeah, it's a really sweet
- 55:11scene. When she's like, and I carried her and
- 55:13then I didn't know. Like, I get that she probably
- 55:15feels so guilty for not realizing. Of course.
- 55:18But then she feels so guilty for feeling guilty
- 55:21because she does love Bay despite ignoring her
- 55:24all the time. I know. And not really taking any
- 55:27interest in any of her interests. I know. Or
- 55:30personality. Yeah. Anyway, yeah, Bay breaks into
- 55:34Daphne's room, kind of. Oh, wait, are we there
- 55:38yet? I think that's Leah. Oh, what am I missing?
- 55:40What did I skip? Well, Daphne is at home with
- 55:42Adriana, telling Adriana about Buckner. And first
- 55:46thing I know, she's SimCom -ing through context.
- 55:49SimCom is simultaneous communication. It is speaking
- 55:53English and also using ASL at the same time.
- 55:57And it's not a perfect method of communication.
- 56:00And in this scene, it's not necessary because
- 56:03Adriana knows sign, as does Regina. And yet they
- 56:07are Simcomming, which drives me crazy. I don't
- 56:10like Simcom in the show, especially. And this
- 56:14will continue for the entire series. Yeah. Daphne
- 56:17is saying Buckner or Carlton. And in a way, she's
- 56:21saying John Catherine or Regina. Wow. That was
- 56:25deep. Thank you. Yeah. And then Daphne Simcoms
- 56:29to Regina and basically says stop lashing out
- 56:32at the canisters and that she's thinking of going
- 56:34to Buckner. And they have this whole fight. And
- 56:36I really respect when Daphne's like, and I want
- 56:40you to support me. And Regina just goes, no.
- 56:43I think Regina's right. I think Regina's right,
- 56:45too. Yeah. I think she comes across saying, in
- 56:49a very mean way, saying you're going to be a
- 56:50weird deaf girl with an interpreter following
- 56:52you around. Very mean thing to say to your daughter.
- 56:55But at the same time, she's like, you're letting
- 56:58John and Catherine pressure you and trying to
- 57:00fit you into this box of what an ideal deaf person
- 57:04and a daughter should look like. But she's doing
- 57:06it in a very discouraging way. Also, I think
- 57:09Regina, this is also Regina just getting defensive.
- 57:12Like, which one with the way I raised you? Which
- 57:15one with me sending you to this perfectly good
- 57:17school and you have all these perfectly good
- 57:20friends at the school? Yeah. Why do you need
- 57:22to go to this private school? And I think she
- 57:24rightfully so is clocking that Daphne's just
- 57:26kind of rolling over to the pressure of the Kennishes.
- 57:30Because she's like a people pleaser, clearly.
- 57:32Yeah, she says, stop that. Yeah. Anyways, bae.
- 57:35Is on the run, but Toby picks her up, thankfully.
- 57:38And Bay says, no one can understand what I'm
- 57:41going through. And Toby says, actually, there
- 57:42is one other person. This is when she sneaks
- 57:45into the bedroom. We get the most horrendous
- 57:48outfit in this whole episode. Oh, I forgot. Tell
- 57:51me. Which is Daphne is sleeping. Right. In a,
- 57:56like, long sleeve, what looks to be, like, cashmere
- 58:00sweater with a T -shirt over it. Whoa. Yeah,
- 58:05it's like very 2011 layering. Also, aren't you
- 58:09hot? Yeah. Kashmir is very warm. Maybe you'll
- 58:12have good heat in your Eastwood side house. It's
- 58:17not winter. It's very ABC family. Like, what
- 58:20do the teens wear? Definitely a long sleeve under
- 58:24it. Yeah. I don't know. Anyways, yeah, Bae climbs
- 58:27through the window and they bond over music.
- 58:30Bae is going through Daphne's music collection
- 58:32and she says, she goes, Pitbull and T -Pain?
- 58:38Damn, some of this is too hard even for me. Which
- 58:42is just painful. The two hardest musicians I
- 58:45know. Painful all around. Pitbull though? Mr.
- 58:49Worldwide? Yeah, I just am thinking about where
- 58:52Pitbull is now. Where's he up to now? With all
- 58:55the girls famously going to his concerts in bald
- 58:58caps and cosplaying as Pitbull and then just
- 59:03being like, God, it's so hard. Wow, you're like
- 59:07a real cool gangster girl. Like, it's so weird.
- 59:12Do you know Bill Vickers, the Lightprint ASL
- 59:14guy? No. He's an ASL teacher online and he runs
- 59:18this website called lightprint .com. But he is
- 59:22bald and... My friend Sweet Ariel and I were
- 59:25thinking about doing Bill Vickers for Halloween.
- 59:28Wow, and then you can keep the bald caps in case
- 59:30we ever go to a Pitbull concert. That would be
- 59:33a good investment, honestly. You should do that.
- 59:36Anyways, yeah, we're back in Daphne's bedroom,
- 59:38and she is saying, oh, by the way, Mom's struggling
- 59:42to pay rent. She got her car broken into. We
- 59:44might have to move to my uncle's place hours
- 59:46away. Yeah. That really comes out of nowhere.
- 59:49The next morning, Bay is still with Daphne's.
- 59:52I guess she stayed over. Didn't tell her parents.
- 59:56No, first, that night, she walks out in Regina's
- 1:00:01home, and Adriana's there, and is like, hey.
- 1:00:05And Bay's like, who is this? And Daphne's like,
- 1:00:07oh, that's your grandma. Again, I'm begging for,
- 1:00:10like, a little fanfare for Adriana. And for Bay.
- 1:00:13I know. Yeah, the chatting. Yeah, Regina gives
- 1:00:18her some tough love, like yells at her a little,
- 1:00:21but is also a bit more supportive than Bae's
- 1:00:25parents were. And Adriana says she's just like
- 1:00:28Bae was when she was her age. Yeah. And that's
- 1:00:32like the only semblance of connection they have
- 1:00:34this episode. But it is meaningful for Bae to
- 1:00:37be like, wow, maybe I am like you, Regina. I
- 1:00:40learned that my mom was rebellious and can draw,
- 1:00:43and that's kind of it. Well, and that Bay is
- 1:00:47a quarter Puerto Rican. And that Bay is a quarter
- 1:00:49Puerto Rican. And then she says, guys, I have
- 1:00:51an idea. You know that guest house? That three
- 1:00:54-bedroom house that is just empty? That we never
- 1:00:57use? Yeah. Chekhov's gone. Cut to the next scene.
- 1:01:01Daphne Regina and Adriana are moving in. But
- 1:01:03also, Joe and Catherine haven't met Adriana,
- 1:01:06so they're like, who is she? Yeah, again, justice
- 1:01:08for Adriana. Justice for Adriana. She's a lovely
- 1:01:12woman. She's lovely. She does sort of disappear
- 1:01:15completely from the show in later seasons. Yeah.
- 1:01:18Well, she ends up doing Jane the Virgin. I forgot
- 1:01:21she was in that. But anyway, she's there for
- 1:01:23now. For now. She's also moving into the guest
- 1:01:26house. She's moving into the guest house, her
- 1:01:27own beautiful house. And Ty is helping them move
- 1:01:30in. And yeah, wonder we'll see him again. And
- 1:01:34this is Bae's first time realizing that Ty is
- 1:01:37like so attached to the Vasquez family. That
- 1:01:40is true. And then she goes, wait a second. Who's
- 1:01:44my dad? Oh, we get to see one more shot of Emmett
- 1:01:48coming to pick Daphne up. I love that they're
- 1:01:50moving in. Daphne moves like two boxes in and
- 1:01:53then she says, gotta go. And her like - Does
- 1:01:56not help. Hot friend on a motorcycle shows up.
- 1:01:59And he goes, he looks at bae. Oh, he looks at
- 1:02:02bae. They're still my favorite couple. If he
- 1:02:05didn't do whatever he did. Do you know what he
- 1:02:08did? Yes. Okay. Yeah, Sean Birdie's so good at
- 1:02:12just like when he smiles. He's such a teen heartthrob,
- 1:02:17like dreamboat boy. But he goes, who's that?
- 1:02:19And Daphne goes, that's me in another life. And
- 1:02:23they ride off into the sunset. The last shot
- 1:02:26is Bae standing alone. And she will continue
- 1:02:30to stand alone. Yeah, that's a real tone setter
- 1:02:33for the season, honestly. Man. When I started
- 1:02:36my rewatch a couple of months ago, I actually
- 1:02:39skipped this episode because in my head I was
- 1:02:42like, it's so slow and we're with the Kennishes
- 1:02:45for so long before we even meet Daphne. That
- 1:02:49is not the case. I know. I don't know why in
- 1:02:51my memory it was like a useless episode. I think
- 1:02:54there's so much good stuff here. My complaint
- 1:02:59is that there's so much plot. I don't think we
- 1:03:02need all this plot in one episode. Like, maybe
- 1:03:04Bae doing, like, the artwork and Sean and Catherine
- 1:03:09deciding to, like, go full custody mode. Yeah,
- 1:03:13I think it was from an era of TV where all pilots
- 1:03:16had to be like that. You had to have a pilot
- 1:03:19that, like, hooked executives enough to order
- 1:03:22a whole season. So, like, if you'll notice when
- 1:03:24we watch the next episode... They probably filmed
- 1:03:27the pilot like six months before they filmed
- 1:03:29the rest of the show. That's usually the case.
- 1:03:30Yeah. I can't wait to get into the drama of it
- 1:03:33all. Yeah. Tune back next week. Yeah. Next week
- 1:03:36for episode two. American Gothic. Every week
- 1:03:40or every other week. I don't know. Tune back
- 1:03:43in to find out what we decide. Yeah. We're working
- 1:03:46on this.
