- Bekah: What I would love to kind of go through is if you guys don't mind, and I know this is kind of like a fun thing, but y'all are cool and flexible, right? So, so you guys shared at the beginning three of your favorite ways to support couples and encourage them on in their marriages is going back to through their history and how that's impacting their now, communication and then also just honoring the differences and seeing those. So if you would ⁓ if you would do this with me, this would be really interesting. Nick & Haley: Yeah. Bekah: ⁓ kind of talk through these three things with how it's going in your marriage. because you guys are living as incredible examples, walking through a hard time. And sure you guys are bringing up like what you're practicing what you preach, right? Because you're that's the beautiful thing about encouraging others in Christ and the way that God has given you guys these this role and this platform is I know you're living it out. I know you're working it out. Maybe not perfectly, but you're you're doing your best. So maybe let's go through like Has there been anything in either of y'all's past that has been hard in this journey of trying to conceive? And how have you guys been working that out? Nick & Haley: Are you talking about specifically through the journey of conception or is that we Bekah: Yeah, yeah. This journey of trying to conceive. And I talk about this. I know this is a hard thing to talk about, but this is where my people are at. So they're gonna be right with you guys. And it's it yeah. Yeah. Nick & Haley: Yeah. No. Yeah, let me think. Like any ⁓ the emotional thing from the past. I don't think for me necessarily when w when it comes to the conception conversation, like we haven't had triggers to to at least not for my end. Yeah. We've we've we've had lots of triggers around other things, but around this area. So yeah, no, nothing currently. So for us, like like I mentioned before, our say out of those three areas that Nick mentioned. The first one was the heart healing that the Lord took us through first. And so and at the time, early on in marriage and even when we were engaged, we worked together full time. So we were together a lot. ⁓ and so ⁓ know that's not everyone's experience, but how we describe it for us is like it was almost like compressed time. Like we literally got like a crash course of like that space to kind of go through the triggers and the healing and the very messy days that like The whole schedule gets thrown off because some the conversation goes wrong and now you can't work together. And so it kind of like that whole time, like we got through so much healing in those few years. that I feel like and and which is why we're such big believers in this, is because it gives you that foundation of like, now you can actually talk and be a team. Because before then, when there's triggers, like you literally see the other person as the problem. So perhaps, you know, couples listening to this, there are triggers coming up currently. I again it goes back to healing that with the Lord. Figuring out where that root stemmed from. So kinda like you asked, like, was there anywhere for us? I don't think specifically around this, but there were so many triggers that came up just in marriage in general. Which do you want to share? Yeah, yeah. I can I can give an example, right? Because I think a lot of couples will be able to relate to this as well. So for us, you know, my Haley was raised with both both of our parents, I was raised by my mom. So my dad was In my life until I was about two, and then he left. I still saw him here, you know, e every once in a while, but he wasn't a present father in my childhood years. And so that left a big gap in my heart as a little boy. And so I raised by my mom, and my mom was very strong-willed, very strong-minded. She did a great job. I love my mom. I mean, did an incredible job as a mom and yet try to play a role as a dad as well. And but a woman cannot play a role as a dad. It is impossible. It does not work. You can do your best. And man, ladies that are listening that raise kids on their own, I mean, you're doing something that us men could not do. You do way better than we would have done. Okay. So I don't mean anything negative by saying you can't play, but you're if you're not a man, you cannot be a father. And so, because of that, when for my end, when we came together, Haley also has a strong personality. Well, when as I grew up. I resented my mom's strong personality at times because I was going from boyhood to manhood. So I what when the when the male goes from being a boy to a man, he pushes away and he needs space to figure out himself. Otherwise, he will never feel like he is a true man. And so for me, Haley's strong personality will come out and I will feel threatened. I will feel triggered. And yeah, it had nothing to do with her. She it had to do with my mom. And so over the years, and as going deeper into this conversation and me practicing invite recognizing where it stemmed. ⁓ okay, it's connected to my mom. Well, when did this happen? Well, when I would do this, my mom would do this. Okay, when was the first instance that this happened? Well, this I remember like I was like seven years old, and this happened, blah, blah, blah. Okay, cool. Lord. I invite you in to this specific place and to that specific area. Show me where you were. Show me what what you see in this reality. Bring healing to my heart. And then crying out to the Lord, boom, now I just invited the Lord in to that. See, because we live in now, there's no past and future. We're always living now, but in the moment where you're triggered, you ⁓ actively living in the past now. So if you go Back there, and you invite the Lord in, you are actively receiving and he will heal that that area because you got to bring him into the moment. And that's what we found. That's what the Lord showed us. This is no, I'm not, you know, necessarily a theological teaching here. This is just what we found through firsthand experience: that the Lord wants to heal our hearts, and yet he is a gentleman, he will not. force it. He will invite he ⁓ when we invite him in, he will meet us there into the needy gritty specific areas. And there is freedom that happens. And so yeah. I know I'm getting very fired up, but it's ⁓ yeah. I would love to add on to this. This is this is great. And I really hope people are like, Wow, I see the importance of this because like you said, it's not always like, I wanna go heal and get messy and emotional and like you know, like it's not even us. We're like, that's not what I want to put on my schedule today. But like When emotions come up and if you're seeing things come up through conversations and you're getting a little aggressive or what and it's like not a normal reaction, like that's an opportunity, it's an invitation for the Lord saying, Hey, there's something here that you're not living in freedom yet because triggers are bondage. And so anything in scripture says anything that controls us, we're in bondage to. And so in those moments, you're literally reliving it. Like you're not choosing to be angry, it's something subconscious, right? That that hurt is there. And so the Lord wants you to receive the heart in that place. And so it's a heart thing. But then it's also, and we we teach couples, it's a mindset thing. So once you're aware of like, ⁓ this is where that's stemming from, you have to really pinpoint the lie that was believed. Because when we agree with the lies, that's when we're saying, like, we're living it, you know, we're partnering with the enemy, which is the truth. and so we wanna we wanna undo that, right? We're like, wait, no, I don't want to believe that lie. And what would a lie be as an example in that? Like, That I am your mom or that. Yeah, the or that you know, my wife is as controlling as my mom was. So that's a lie that I had ingrained and that caused me to fight want to fight, I mean, you know, push back. I mean, my wife when that lie was broken, when that situation was healed and I was free from that past, I then saw my life's passion. ⁓ you know or strong personality as passion and as a beautiful thing because she's able to compliment and add to my life and it doesn't threaten me any longer. All because the heart. And so then it's like reminding yourself of the truth. So it's like you you take the intentional moment to heal with the Lord and go and get messy and let all your emotions really come out because the body keeps the score. So just because you're trying to forget your body's like, no, like I'm still carrying all this weight, this bondage, right? That the Lord's like, No, you don't have to carry that any longer. You know, I don't want you guys to fight. You're in the same team. And so hopefully pulling us back full circle to your question, nothing currently comes up, but it did so much before. And so who knows if we like struggled to conceive in a previous season, had that been our story, that probably would have been something that would come up and we were arguing about, you know, because there was so much healing that still was yet to be done in our hearts. Agreed. Bekah: Mm-hmm. Yeah. that was so good. That was so helpful. I'm I'm thankful you guys at you know, gave the examples and like walked us through what that looks like because I think everyone listening is probably thinking like, ⁓ shoot. ⁓ You thinking of their own ⁓ past what might be coming up, potentially in the communication things. And before we get into that, Nick, I just want to affirm you, ⁓ you grew without a father and here you are. Nick & Haley: Yeah. Bekah: Living as just this redeemed person in Christ, this redeemed father in Christ. And it's so beautiful to see that. So when we think of past, I see that. And I'm like, dang, you didn't have a father. And look at what an incredible husband, supportive husband and father you are now in Jesus Christ our Lord. He's working out his redemption in you. And it's very evident. So that's that's wonderful. ⁓ okay, so walk us into the communication piece. Nick & Haley: Amen. Thank you. Yeah. Amen. Thank you. Bekah: So share with us some practical things of how you practice what you preach, so to speak, in terms of communication with each other. I know you guys alluded to it a little bit, but I'd love for you to expand more on like, okay, do you guys sit down regularly to talk about this topic? And how do you communicate so each person each person feels loved and respected and those kinds of things? Any practicals on that would be great. Nick & Haley: yeah. man, which one do we pick? Many of them though we can share for sure. Yeah. You have something? Yeah, I can share. Okay, go for it. So the communication is one of the biggest things that people couples come to us wanting to work on. Because it's the conflicts and that happens via communication. And really the communication is the tip of the iceberg. So that's actually the easy part once everything else is taken care of. But we also to talk, about. So that's that's actually ⁓ later in the in so we have a program that we kind of for six months work and walk couples through that, you know, the Lord gave to us and to to break it down in a simple manner. But the communication is towards the end of the program because that's like the la one of the la towards the last things that you really need to focus on. But great question. So either way, let's talk about it. biggest thing, you know H un understanding the the differences in how the female and the the male communicate is really important. It's a great starting point, very practical. So like met men communicate directly, briefly, and there's always a purpose as to why we communicate. We don't communicate, we don't chit chat just to chit chat. Unless we're with guys and we're it and that now that's different. But in the relationship, we usually communicate because there's a reason that we're trying, you know, and a it there's a logic behind the communication. The female nature is way more beautiful than the male and complex than the males. female processes her emotions out loud. And so it's a more emotional form of communication. There's more storytelling, there's it's more dragged out, you know, ⁓ and The first thing is understanding that. That's a great one of the pieces of the puzzle is understanding that. And so from that place, you know, the man is able to then do one very practical thing, which is your woman to the men listening, and wives are probably gonna wanna share this episode with the husband so that they can also hear this. Your woman, when she communicates, she is with you. She wants to connect her heart to you. So her way of connecting her heart is to opening herself and putting it things out there. Now, if you're too busy for her, if you're on your phone, or if you gotta watch the game as she's talking, or you don't give her the time of day, or you start to reason with her and give her your your solutions to what she's experiencing, Mr. Fix it has she is absolutely going to. Despies that communication style because it's not what she needs. It's not how she receives love. So one of the things that I got to learn and that I help husbands with now is when she shares, you listen to her. ⁓ as she share her shares her problems or her situations or things that happen to her that are going on without with within her heart and her life, she is not asking. Unless she asks you directly. She's not asking for you to solve her problem. She's asking for you to hear her and empathize with her and there with her and make her feel seen, heard, and loved and appreciated, and that you're there for her regardless of everything she's she's going through. And you feel her pain with her. And as you do that, she will feel very loved. And as you do that, she will be. Glad to want to talk to you about your things that you care about. But until then, there's gonna be a big void in the woman's heart until the man is able to learn two ears, one mouth. So first you listen. She needs your ears, she needs your eyeballs, she needs you to hold her hands and be there with her as she is talking to you. This is something so important for the female. It's so so important for a marriage for the male to be able to do that. And because it's it's good. Which kind of gets into our next It kind of all goes together if you're noticing, Becca. That's We had to order in some way. We tell our couples, we're like, well, this all kind of goes together, but you have to learn one by one. So Bekah: Mm-hmm. That's great. Nick & Haley: I was gonna say just holding space goes into our differences, which the masculine is the it holds, it receives. And so Kinda again going ahead of myself, but the more the man learns how to just receive and not to jump and fix it, unless she gets done and you're like, Would you need help finding a solution? Ask a question. There's nothing wrong with that. Half the time we'll be like, Actually, yeah, now that I talked about it and I feel better emotionally, yeah, can you help me solve this? But the men jump in usually way too soon. Yeah. And then the women are like, I don't feel empathized or cared for or, you know, validated like all of our needs that we we teach. and so yeah. the masculine container. It's like, I never viewed it. Like she needs me to just receive her right now. So communication is about seven percent verbal. You know, we think of communication as us talking, but really majority of is nonverbal. So we need to take that in consideration when we talk about communication. And so this that this example, you know, what I just shared, ⁓ most of this is nonverbal. And and and and when we have that awareness, things start to shift. And and then same thing for the wives. So now we can talk about the wives side. I naturally focus more on the men because that's my my calling. And Haley gets to speak from her side unless you have another question or you want to go elsewhere. Bekah: That's great. No, I think that's it's it's very refreshing to hear. I I'm thankful for your you guys speaking into that. It's so important for us to hear how or the husband to hear how it will help serve his wife and help that communication the best. So and so Haley, let's go into the to the woman side of things. Nick & Haley: Right. Yeah. I was gonna say this is like this is so easy for me because I feel like this has been the biggest thing and again this applies to us even now. Like these are the things that we r have to remind ourselves constantly and the more you do it it gets easier. But just the awareness and understanding these concepts and like, ⁓ I haven't been again, I'm the man was treating the woman like she was a man. No, she's a woman, she needs something different than you, right? So the more you're aware of it, you we just practice. ⁓ and we do notice it's easier now to course correct than it was years ago. So for the woman though, yeah, the biggest thing I think for us, because like Nick said, we talk for more reasons than men do. Like we communicate for more than just to relay information, you know? there are more reasons. and a lot of times we are also more detail oriented, we are more storytelling, like our just ⁓ we're not as direct, right? And so the man could get lost, and the whole time he'll be listening and be like, what's the point of this? And we're just sharing all the things again to be received, to connect, right? he's not getting it. And so a lot of times maybe he'll get impatient or like again, pick up his phone, zone out, because we're just so long-winded a lot of times. and so ⁓ one for the ladies that is just so helpful, and man, every time Nick mentions this, I'm like, ⁓ I forgot to do it again because it's so true and it it just takes intention. Is to preface. Preface, preface, preface. So before we just see our husbands who are like, ⁓ I just want to talk to you about all the things, right? Don't we just blah on him because he's gonna be like, okay, this is a lot. Preface. Hey, honey, I would love to talk to you about a couple things. And sometimes he'll be like, Okay, what are those things? Because the man has to consent if now's a good time to him to receive and be that container. And a lot of times as women, we don't give him That opportunity. We just kind of blah and expect that he's in a good place to receive. But like Nick said at the beginning of this show or this episode, men carry a lot of weight. and they they are the head of the household, they're the head of the family, right? And so of course, Christ is covering them, which right, they're to submit to that and surrender to that. but still, it's a lot on their physical body. Again, our body, our physiology is different and they can handle more pressure. But yeah, it's a lot of pressure and they have their own struggles mentally, emotionally, juggling all the things. It just looks different. Like a female's reality, especially if the ladies listening, this a lot of stay-at-home moms, maybe working moms. you know, like it's just a different reality. It's a different type of hard. We can't compare our hearts. That's another one. Don't compare your hearts. ⁓ Don't do it. It doesn't do anything. It just puts you guys against one another when that's hard for him. This is hard for me. It's both valid, you know. the ladies listening, this a lot of stay-at-home moms, maybe working moms. you know, like it's just a different reality. It's a different type of hard. We can't compare our hearts. That's another one. Don't compare your hearts. ⁓ Don't do it. It doesn't do anything. It just puts you guys against one another when that's hard for him. This is hard for me. It's both valid, you know. But yeah, we kind of forget. We think like I see Nick as so capable and able to handle so much that I also forget like sometimes he is weak and so he still is a human though and he's not perfect. You know what I mean? So though I can always turn to the Lord and he's ready to receive all my stuff, which is what, you know, early on in our journey was a lot of like me learning. I know Nick shared his trigger. I didn't share a bunch of mine, but a lot of father wounds. So we would trigger one another getting married, right? And they literally back and forth, round and round, we're like, but this has gotta stop. This is not even us is the problem. It's all the past, right? I had to learn, not only to to preface and give him an opportunity to like, okay, yeah, I can talk about this now, or okay, can we talk about that tonight? Or let's circle back to this, so he can prepare himself and like shift gears. Because us women, we can multitask. How God created our brains, literally, there's more overlap in the hemispheres for a female than a male. So it literally takes him longer to pivot into from logical conversation and doing things to an emotional conversation. Like it takes him longer to pivot. We're just bing, bing, bing, bing, bing. We're fine. Again, we're assuming he's like a female. He's not. He's a male. He need he needs an opportunity. So preface. also I was gonna say not taking those emotions to him instantly. So when we're going through hard emotions as a woman, relying on the Lord. More than just going to your husband. It's so easy, especially in that season where we were literally together all the time. It was so easy for me to just want to go talk to him about these things. Or we got an argument just to stay, to get to the bottom of it, knowing that like we all want to be good again. But I realized even that, that fight response, right? It's like there's healthy, we talk about stress responses a lot naturally, in our coaching. And there's like pros and cons to each response. You normally wouldn't think that. you know what an unhealthy fight response is, but there's also healthy fight, which is like fighting for your relationship and like sticking around through the hard seasons, you know? and so I had to realize like, okay, that example of me going to him to try to fight, right? And bring that intense energy and the emotion for him to carry that when he was not in a place early on in marriage to carry that. He, you know, we didn't know all the things we know now. and needed go to the Lord. Instead, I needed to run to the prayer closet. And there were many times and I gave him permission, like when things were good after the fact. I'm like, please point me to the Lord because I need to go there because I don't want to put all this pressure on you to be this perfect husband and receive all my stuff. Though I know you want to and he wants to. If he's not in a position to, we need to give them grace and work with one another. You know, we're on the same team and A lot of that time like in the prayer closet, literally just pouring out my heart to the Lord, you get to a place where all the emotion is released. Because when you cry, you're releasing toxins from your body. Like just again, the body's so incredible. Like I just could go on forever. It's just so incredible. all the intentionality that is put into it. And so you get to a place where after all your emotions come out, instead of dumping them on your husband and like making him feel overwhelmed, right? You get it out with the Lord, you receive that love. Okay, everything's okay. Everything's gonna be okay. And you just start to hear his truth. You just start to receive his truth. And then you can approach your husband from a different, kind of like an emptier place instead of that charged up negative energy. Last thing I'll share just on this, I feel like it'll really land with people, like a little example of even just that, because I know I'm kind of going back and forth again, it all goes together. I read this in a book one time, I think it was last year, and it really stuck with me with all this work that we already do. I'm like, I think this is the way I'm gonna explain this. You know, when you go to like an Italian restaurant, like old school Italian restaurant, and there's like and vinegar together in the same bottle, right? Like you got the salt, the pepper, the oil and vinegar the same, like the oil's here floating at the top, the vinegar, okay. Well, going to the Lord with your emotions is like that. You pour out all the vinegar, get it all out. It's a lot, but he can handle it. He knows your emotions are just signals. He it it's a signal telling you, hey, there's something in your heart that I want you to come process with me. Pour it all out before him. A lot of the times we don't pour it out. I know if any ladies listening were stuffers. I was a stuffer and I'm like, no, I'm fine, and I'll live in my brain to avoid all of this, which just damage the relationship, right? And so getting it all out with God and getting comfortable with that, like this is normal. Like, how can we have intimacy with another human if we can't have it with our creator who knows everything about us already? It's a huge opportunity, right? And we're still on this journey. Not perfect at this by any means, right? but pouring it all out, pouring all the vinegar out, and then what comes after that? The oil that ⁓ His words, his truth, his love, after you get it all, then you're in a place to receive. And so sometimes by us holding on to all of our emotions, wishing they weren't there, even though they are, we just like wish they are not there, they get in the way from us receiving God's love, which is what heals us. It's like that healing ointment, that balm, you know, ⁓ that Nick was talking about. So you have to wait there long enough. And the days when I would run to the prayer closet and I'm like, God, like going there angry, y'all. I'm not talking about, ⁓ I'm gonna go be with God now. Like I was angry. We were in an argument. I'm like taking it all to my closet, you know, falling on the floor, just getting it all out. And then after a while, I'm like, okay, and yeah, literally just receive his love. I'm with you, everything's gonna be okay. Again, because her past triggers coming up, right? So I'm like, okay, everything's all right. And you get to receive that, and that is what heals. And so between again, the woman taking responsibility for her own emotions and not projecting it on her husband. But also prefacing like what she wants, you you don't realize how hard it is to do that as a woman until you try to do it. Because we just want to talk. We don't want to pause and like think about what is the point of me bringing this up right now. What do I really want from him? Again, to be more direct and to speak his language. Those two things have been, I think, the hardest things that I've had to learn as a woman, or as a wife. Bekah: Yeah, because it takes it takes the pause and it takes patience, which is so hard. That's a discipline that we have to learn. Nick & Haley: Yeah. Bekah: that's huge. Those are incredibly helpful practical suggestions to carry on with. And I was thinking about something my husband and I do is we have like a weekly marriage conversation or whatever. So we go through all these same questions and then in different seasons we'll like add on a question, you know. So Nick & Haley: You do not. Bekah: You know, for example, you could add on the question, hey, can let's make one of the questions, how are you doing with your fertility stuff? And so kind of having that space of like, okay, he knows this is when we're gonna talk about it. And of course you could still preface like, hey, is this still a good time for you? You pulled an all nighter last night, you know. so I understand if we need to push this out to tomorrow morning or something, but but then it it it just creates that anticipation. So that's another even another way to kind of loop that in. Nick & Haley: Great job. I love how y'all do that. Yep. We definitely I know yeah, we didn't touch on that. We definitely recommend like our marriage rhythms and that's a big part because yeah, for the woman it's like, I want to talk about all these things now. But if you have a time like you just said, then we can rest in the now, knowing that like his commitment and for the man it's important to follow through and make it a priority. Even though a lot of times it's we found we have like a marriage check in weekly and then also like a weekly check in where we go over like our life and like Bekah: Yeah. Nick & Haley: the wins and the lessons and all of that. we found that like it helps it blesses me. It blesses both of us, but especially me, 'cause I get to count on like that's my time with him to be like right. Carried and supported by him and get on the same page. So I love how y'all do that. That's so good. Good for you. Excellent. Bekah: Yeah. Yeah. It's been very helpful with like when we have different topics in of the season in our life what we're going through and having that space. It's hard for me though to be quiet during the week because I'm like, ⁓ I just want to talk about this right now. But it's hard, but it's good. It's good. It's good discipline. So it's wonderful. Well, Nick and Haley, it's been such a pleasure to have you guys on. Thank you so much. Seriously. Nick & Haley: ⁓ yeah. Yeah. Right. Yeah. Love that. Bekah: ⁓ can you guys share how our listeners can find you and any other anything else you guys can support with them them with? Nick & Haley: Yeah, for sure. I mean the if you want to continue listening to us and if you like what we bring up, then ⁓ probably the podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcast, of course, ⁓ Thriving Kingdom Marriage, you see us there. And then also website. Go ahead. Thriving Kingdom Marriage dot com. Yep. Yeah, you can learn more about our program there. And also we're coming out hopefully by the time this comes out with a communication quiz. So we're super excited about that. Bekah: How fun. Yeah. Nick & Haley: I think yeah, check our website and hopefully it'll be up and running by then. We're so close. And if you want to message us or DM us Instagram at Thriving King the Marriage, that's a way to message us directly as well. Thank you for having us by the way, Becca. This has been This has been a blessing. This is so fun. Bekah: That's great. That's wonderful. Yes. Yes. Thank you so much, you guys. let me pray over you guys and the ministry you're doing and over all our listeners. ⁓ Jesus, we just come before you and we thank you so much for today's episode. What an incredible just guide you are for the things that we discussed today. ⁓ we thank you, Lord, for leading it. We thank you for the stories and the tools and the encouragement, the disciplines ⁓ that. Nick & Haley: Amen. Bekah: were discussed. And Lord, I just pray over Nick and Haley and their ministry, their business ministry, and I pray for a huge blessing on it. I pray that you would bring many couples to them to to love on and to encourage and to to build up in you. And I pray that, yes, Lord, you would just continue to have your hand on them. I pray over their family and and their their growing family. And I pray over them in the same way that I pray over my sisters in Christ and sisters and husbands. Nick & Haley: Mm. Mm. Bekah: so God, I just lift up all these families and I pray that they would be encouraged today. I pray that you would fill them with new ⁓ tools ⁓ and to communicate respectfully and see ⁓ see the differences and how you have made us and see the different ways in which we can love each other and respect each other in this hard season.
