- 0:00Speaker 1: What are you drinking today that that liquor cabinet is
- 0:02Speaker 1: getting empty? What do we got today?
- 0:03Speaker 2: Listen, lemonade, I hear the liquor store is not the
- 0:07Speaker 2: place to go. I went, when'd you go?
- 0:10Speaker 1: I gloved up, I masked up, I has matted up,
- 0:13Speaker 1: and I went in and filled a freaking basket.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Yeah, you know it's crazy. They're talking about opening it
- 0:18Speaker 2: back up.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Well not California.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Texas is talking about opening back up next week.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Yeah, well that's not gonna work out.
- 0:26Speaker 2: That's just the dumbest thing I've ever heard of my life.
- 0:28Speaker 1: That's not gonna work out for anyone. Good thing we
- 0:30Speaker 1: have Governor k News someone if I think he's doing.
- 0:32Speaker 2: And Garcetti man, thank goodness for Garcetti too. Man, both
- 0:36Speaker 2: doing well.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Let's give them both a shout out on hod On.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Hold on, let's see.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Here's some stories I'm not sure we made about a
- 0:46Speaker 3: bunch of dogs and nurses.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Here's the story.
- 0:55Speaker 4: So YadA.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Yead Donald Faison, it's a very very exciting day today
- 1:09Speaker 1: on this podcast.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Do you know why we're getting epic today? We're going now,
- 1:13Speaker 2: we're going uber epic today.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, don't get me wrong, the creator of
- 1:17Speaker 1: the show That's fancy, America's favorite Canadian, Sarah Chalk. That's fancy,
- 1:22Speaker 1: But nothing is as fancy as someone who we love
- 1:26Speaker 1: as much as this man, who I can say I
- 1:29Speaker 1: learned a lot as an actor from and uh is
- 1:32Speaker 1: just a really fucking talented and hilarious human being. Stand
- 1:36Speaker 1: by Dan with the thunderous applause que Johnny c McGinley.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, boy, the legend, the legend that is John
- 1:46Speaker 2: c McGinley.
- 1:47Speaker 4: Hello, Donald, Hello, Zachie, how are you?
- 1:50Speaker 2: I'm yeah, you are always, always, always.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Johnny, how's your how's the you know you? You were
- 1:59Speaker 1: saying just before we started recording that you know that
- 2:03Speaker 1: you had been homeschooling your kids, So this isn't as
- 2:06Speaker 1: odd of a switch for you. Tell everybody a little
- 2:09Speaker 1: bit about that.
- 2:10Speaker 4: We've been homeschooling forever.
- 2:12Speaker 5: Billy is twelve, Kate's almost ten, and we've been homeschooling
- 2:16Speaker 5: for since, all the way through elementary school.
- 2:20Speaker 4: Here.
- 2:20Speaker 5: One thing in this is the friends, obviously, and we've
- 2:24Speaker 5: been taking this thing super seriously, and we're totally locked
- 2:29Speaker 5: down because we've got Nicole, my wife's father here, who
- 2:32Speaker 5: has some pre existing challenges and pre existing conditions, and
- 2:38Speaker 5: so we've been taking this thing by the letter. And
- 2:41Speaker 5: so look, we're lucky enough to live in this place.
- 2:45Speaker 5: I mean, I built a baseball field during the writer's
- 2:47Speaker 5: strike on Scrubs, and so there's a baseball field right
- 2:51Speaker 5: behind me. And so we use that almost as a playground.
- 2:54Speaker 5: And you know, there's stuff. This is a kid compound,
- 2:58Speaker 5: so they can run around here. They don't get to
- 3:00Speaker 5: see their friends. They don't go to do dance and
- 3:03Speaker 5: aeriel and pottery and all the stuff you do when
- 3:06Speaker 5: you're not homeschooling or go down to the beach.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Friends. Do you have friends like I was just thinking
- 3:11Speaker 1: about Donald, who are homeschooling for the first time. Who
- 3:13Speaker 1: are calling you like gonny advice or anything? Because I'm
- 3:16Speaker 1: watching Donald do it and he's like hiding out in
- 3:19Speaker 1: his closet.
- 3:20Speaker 2: I've run my kids. This is how bad.
- 3:22Speaker 5: People don't call this department for that. They call upstairs
- 3:26Speaker 5: to the Nicole department.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Oh, then she and I need to get on the
- 3:30Speaker 2: phone because I am failing miserably. My wife is My
- 3:33Speaker 2: wife is a champion. She runs the household. But I
- 3:36Speaker 2: feel like I'm starting to slack. So much that She's like,
- 3:39Speaker 2: when this is over, I'm leaving you.
- 3:43Speaker 5: I think if you could compartmentalize and play to your strengths, Donald,
- 3:47Speaker 5: you'd be better off.
- 3:48Speaker 2: I don't have many strengths.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Johnny, you do. You got sports? Johnny said, he's doing PE.
- 3:52Speaker 1: You could be in charge of PE. Dude.
- 3:54Speaker 2: I have a competitive spirit in me that won't allow
- 3:57Speaker 2: my kids to beat me. I have problems. Guys have problems. Well,
- 4:01Speaker 2: then here my son screams at me because I never
- 4:05Speaker 2: let him win. He meeting me at this We have
- 4:07Speaker 2: this thing called Papa Shot, and it's like you know
- 4:10Speaker 2: how you go to the carnival, of course, and you
- 4:11Speaker 2: get to shoot as many jump shots as you can
- 4:14Speaker 2: and you burst somebody. We have that. He destroys me,
- 4:17Speaker 2: and that so much so that I don't want to
- 4:19Speaker 2: play the game anymore. Man.
- 4:21Speaker 4: Well, I'm so I'm stoked for you guys doing this.
- 4:24Speaker 5: This this podcast I've listened to. This is either the
- 4:27Speaker 5: fourth or fifth one I've listened to everything, and it's
- 4:30Speaker 5: I listened to it while I'm working out, because it's
- 4:32Speaker 5: about an hour and a half or so. And I
- 4:33Speaker 5: put it on and I go in the garage and
- 4:36Speaker 5: it just makes me happy?
- 4:38Speaker 1: Does it?
- 4:38Speaker 2: Does it get when the theme song comes on? Does
- 4:41Speaker 2: that get you pumped?
- 4:42Speaker 4: I liked it. Well, you guys are so goddamn town.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Johnny, Johnny, we wrote that. It's our first It's our
- 4:47Speaker 1: first time as as as lyricists. Donald, I don't know
- 4:50Speaker 1: if you've been a lyricist before, but it's my first
- 4:52Speaker 1: time as a lyrics putting.
- 4:53Speaker 2: I put a lyric or two to two songs in
- 4:56Speaker 2: song form. I've done it.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Yes, Well, it's my first time, and I you're.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Very good at it. That's not your first time, dude.
- 5:03Speaker 2: You say that. Listen, guys, you don't remember the songs
- 5:05Speaker 2: that we had. Baby, keep it real, Baby, let's chill.
- 5:12Speaker 2: I'm tired of you all up in.
- 5:16Speaker 4: My Crewe see Donald so goddamn talent that he could
- 5:21Speaker 4: sing all these songs and remember his lines. I could
- 5:24Speaker 4: only do one thing, remember my lines.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Well, I want to talk about that for a second, Johnny,
- 5:30Speaker 1: because Donald did. Donald you well, as far as I
- 5:32Speaker 1: see it, in the world of scrubs, there were two extremes.
- 5:35Speaker 1: There was you knowing every fucking piece of syllable and
- 5:39Speaker 1: punctuation mark and Donald being like am I in the scene.
- 5:47Speaker 5: Yeah, but Donald's so goddamn talented that even if it
- 5:50Speaker 5: took him three or four takes, the fourth take was perfect.
- 5:54Speaker 4: It was heaven.
- 5:54Speaker 5: I mean in this episode, in this episode we'll talk
- 5:59Speaker 5: about in this but there's a scene where he dances
- 6:02Speaker 5: to Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson knockoff and Billy had to
- 6:06Speaker 5: be just it's like a fair catch in football. He's
- 6:09Speaker 5: just like that was manna from heaven that an actor
- 6:12Speaker 5: would bust that out.
- 6:12Speaker 4: That's not on the page. No, that was not on
- 6:15Speaker 4: the page.
- 6:16Speaker 1: It wasn't.
- 6:16Speaker 2: I think that's also the beginning of turk dancing and
- 6:20Speaker 2: damn near I believe a gift.
- 6:23Speaker 4: Yea.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Yeah, Johnny, what was talk a little bit about how
- 6:26Speaker 1: you did those because sometimes, just for people who are listening,
- 6:28Speaker 1: Johnny would sometimes get those speeches the night before, because the.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Writers were sometimes the day before, hours before absolutely speech.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Yeah, and I just I for those of you who
- 6:38Speaker 1: don't memorize for a living, it's can be very hard.
- 6:41Speaker 1: But doing what Johnny had to do on the spot
- 6:43Speaker 1: is sometimes close to impossible. So I remember you having
- 6:46Speaker 1: a bit of a system, will you will you talk
- 6:48Speaker 1: about that for people?
- 6:49Speaker 5: Well, I keep these composition books. Uh, you know the
- 6:52Speaker 5: composition books you have in high school, those black and
- 6:55Speaker 5: white things. Well, the first thing I do is I
- 6:57Speaker 5: write out the text in my own hand, and in
- 7:00Speaker 5: the margins I put the verbs of what I'm doing.
- 7:02Speaker 5: And so that just by virtue of writing it out
- 7:04Speaker 5: starts to get it in your skull. And then by
- 7:07Speaker 5: assigning verbs to every action that you're doing, that's the
- 7:10Speaker 5: second stage.
- 7:12Speaker 4: And then if I had time, I keep a rehearsal
- 7:14Speaker 4: space here.
- 7:15Speaker 5: I would go down and there's a whole kind of
- 7:17Speaker 5: little film studio downstairs, and I would get in front
- 7:21Speaker 5: of that. But a lot of times that was out
- 7:22Speaker 5: the window because Billy would hand it to you on
- 7:24Speaker 5: your way into the hospital.
- 7:26Speaker 4: And I'm not being method. Hospital.
- 7:29Speaker 5: We did, in fact, work in a defunct hospital. Sometimes
- 7:33Speaker 5: I'll say that that. Different people are like, ooh, you're
- 7:36Speaker 5: so method. I'm like, no, not fucking method.
- 7:38Speaker 4: It was a hospital.
- 7:38Speaker 5: So I set the fuck up, and so I got
- 7:43Speaker 5: when I got to the hospital, and they would hand
- 7:45Speaker 5: me new lines every year.
- 7:47Speaker 4: Disney would give us make it up.
- 7:48Speaker 5: You guys, remember but fifteen hundred dollars to improve our
- 7:52Speaker 5: dressing rooms. Since our dressing rooms were hospital rooms where
- 7:55Speaker 5: people had died and where people had been saved. And
- 7:58Speaker 5: what I did with my fifteen hundred dollars is I
- 8:01Speaker 5: doubled down, and I hired an acoustic firm, and they
- 8:04Speaker 5: came in and soundproofed my dressing room so I wouldn't
- 8:07Speaker 5: have to hear you idiots in.
- 8:08Speaker 4: The hallway and all the dogs.
- 8:11Speaker 5: For some reason, because one or two of you brought
- 8:14Speaker 5: your dogs, the whole crew decided, well, if Zach and
- 8:17Speaker 5: Donald can do it, the guy in sound and the
- 8:20Speaker 5: guy the productions is that he.
- 8:21Speaker 4: Can do it.
- 8:21Speaker 5: So all of a sudden there was a pack of
- 8:23Speaker 5: about son marteen dogs, and as Karma would have it,
- 8:28Speaker 5: And I like dogs. I hate most people's dogs. I
- 8:30Speaker 5: just I like dogs, but I don't like them at work.
- 8:34Speaker 2: And so I remember, I remember that. I remember all
- 8:38Speaker 2: all you would hear was get out.
- 8:40Speaker 5: I'm trying to remember space two pages, single space.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Do you remember do you remember in the Christmas Story
- 8:47Speaker 1: how he's always fighting the dogs next door. That was
- 8:49Speaker 1: like Johnny C on our on our floor, because Johnny
- 8:53Speaker 1: C was like, oh, someone shut the dogs up. The
- 8:55Speaker 1: dogs all wanted to be with Johnny C.
- 8:57Speaker 5: In a round absolutely and so much so that I
- 9:00Speaker 5: don't know you guys are remember I don't know what season.
- 9:03Speaker 5: But I wrote a letter to our bosses at Disney,
- 9:06Speaker 5: to the HR Department Human Resources. And then I did
- 9:10Speaker 5: what you're supposed to do with an angry letter. I
- 9:12Speaker 5: according my grandfather, I put it in the drawer for
- 9:15Speaker 5: two nights. You're supposed to take angry letters. You don't press.
- 9:18Speaker 5: This was not when you press send. I wrote it,
- 9:20Speaker 5: and I put it in the drawer for two nights.
- 9:22Speaker 5: And in the intervening time, someone got nipped by a
- 9:26Speaker 5: dog on our roar, and Disney found out about it,
- 9:30Speaker 5: not because of me, and they were like, what, there
- 9:32Speaker 5: are seventeen dogs kissing and shitting on the third floor.
- 9:37Speaker 4: I took that letter and I put it right over
- 9:39Speaker 4: in the shredder because.
- 9:41Speaker 1: I thought I thought you were I thought you were
- 9:43Speaker 1: going to give us a big reveal that you had
- 9:45Speaker 1: written the HR letter. But you're saying you never said
- 9:48Speaker 1: to it.
- 9:48Speaker 4: I did not.
- 9:49Speaker 5: I kept it in the drawer, and then I was
- 9:51Speaker 5: let off the hook. Because if you're the guy who
- 9:54Speaker 5: made it so that people couldn't bring their goddamn dogs
- 9:57Speaker 5: to work, then you're that guy. I was look, the
- 10:01Speaker 5: fact of the matters that you asked, how do you
- 10:04Speaker 5: memorize those things?
- 10:05Speaker 4: Good? Fear? Fear is a really good thing.
- 10:08Speaker 5: And I was just afraid to disappoint Billy, and I
- 10:11Speaker 5: wanted him to write those things for me.
- 10:13Speaker 4: And so you were so good at a way to
- 10:16Speaker 4: get him into my skull.
- 10:17Speaker 1: You were so good at it, John, And those rants.
- 10:19Speaker 1: I was looking on YouTube just as we were gearing
- 10:21Speaker 1: up for this episode, and just like people have like
- 10:24Speaker 1: top five Doctor Cox rants, like it's like a thing.
- 10:28Speaker 1: People love to just listen back to those, and just
- 10:31Speaker 1: some of them are just so epic and hilarious.
- 10:34Speaker 5: Where they get hard is when Billy started, and I
- 10:36Speaker 5: don't know whether it was season four or five six,
- 10:39Speaker 5: it's a good problem. When he just started writing lists
- 10:42Speaker 5: that had nothing to do with the item that came
- 10:45Speaker 5: before it, and he just write two pages of lists
- 10:49Speaker 5: reasons why I don't care about you becoming a doctor
- 10:53Speaker 5: or something like that, and they're just this random list.
- 10:57Speaker 5: Those were hard memorizing his story, but.
- 11:01Speaker 4: These lists to two pages, single space a list.
- 11:06Speaker 1: On the other side, we were talking about how Donald
- 11:08Speaker 1: would show up and be like, oh shit, I got
- 11:10Speaker 1: a monologue today.
- 11:15Speaker 2: A time in my life. That was a time in
- 11:17Speaker 2: my life. I don't know. I just I don't know
- 11:20Speaker 2: what was the matter with me. I smoked. I smoked
- 11:23Speaker 2: a lot of marijuana back then too, not that I
- 11:26Speaker 2: don't now, but I smoked a tremendous amount back then.
- 11:29Speaker 2: I don't think this was the beginning of the run
- 11:31Speaker 2: that I did this. I think as I got comfortable,
- 11:34Speaker 2: things changed, and as the show got successful, things changed
- 11:38Speaker 2: and I slacked, And I remember somebody asking me like, dude,
- 11:41Speaker 2: what do you do when you go home? And I
- 11:43Speaker 2: was like, I live my life. They were like, they
- 11:48Speaker 2: were like, but what about your job. I was like,
- 11:50Speaker 2: it's getting done, like I was.
- 11:52Speaker 1: So I think you just got comfortable that you knew
- 11:55Speaker 1: that you'd get it, and you knew that it would
- 11:57Speaker 1: be cut together and be funny. So you're just like,
- 11:59Speaker 1: fugget well.
- 12:01Speaker 2: I don't know if I was, Yeah, you know, I
- 12:03Speaker 2: don't know what it was. Since then, I have, you know,
- 12:07Speaker 2: I've tried to make sure that if I ever ran
- 12:09Speaker 2: into anyone else, if I ran into people on other
- 12:12Speaker 2: jobs that worked with me on scrubs and remembered how
- 12:16Speaker 2: I was on scrubs, I wanted them to have a
- 12:18Speaker 2: completely different opinion of me after we finished working. And
- 12:24Speaker 2: so it's if anything, uh, all of the you know,
- 12:28Speaker 2: all of the you know, me being unprepared and stuff
- 12:31Speaker 2: like that prepared me for later on because now forget
- 12:35Speaker 2: about it. You know, I'm like you, Johnny, if I
- 12:37Speaker 2: mess up a line, I'm putting a hole through a
- 12:40Speaker 2: wall or something like that. You know what I mean.
- 12:42Speaker 5: I want you to get it done in three or
- 12:43Speaker 5: four takes. I want us to get out of here
- 12:46Speaker 5: get it.
- 12:46Speaker 2: If I'm not done it, if I can't do it
- 12:48Speaker 2: in three takes, then forget about it.
- 12:49Speaker 4: Man.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Like then I've wasted I feel like I've wasted everybody's time.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Well I feel that more, and especially now when it's
- 12:56Speaker 1: not your own show. When I'm going to do a
- 12:57Speaker 1: supporting part on something and I fuck up line, I
- 13:00Speaker 1: just I get so mad at myself.
- 13:02Speaker 4: You know.
- 13:03Speaker 1: It's funny, you know, after doing the show for nine years,
- 13:05Speaker 1: we were so comfortable and that that comfortableness led to
- 13:09Speaker 1: a lot of amazing stuff because there was no wrong answer,
- 13:11Speaker 1: and we were so silly with each other and we
- 13:13Speaker 1: could riff. But now I find when I go do
- 13:16Speaker 1: roles where I'm not the lead or I'm supporting, or
- 13:19Speaker 1: I'm or I'm in any whatever I'm doing. I'm really
- 13:22Speaker 1: get mad at myself if I fuck up a line
- 13:24Speaker 1: like I really, I really put more effort into it
- 13:26Speaker 1: than I ever have.
- 13:26Speaker 2: I was about to say, because Zach, I remember a
- 13:28Speaker 2: night where you put the sides people out there who
- 13:32Speaker 2: don't know what sides are there, the piece of paper
- 13:34Speaker 2: where the line where they write, the where they miniaturize
- 13:37Speaker 2: the script into.
- 13:38Speaker 1: The tiny Each day we get a tiny version of
- 13:40Speaker 1: the script. It's probably I don't know what is it,
- 13:43Speaker 1: like eight inches by four.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Inches something like that. I remember one night where you
- 13:47Speaker 2: take those sides to my forehead on off camera.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Yeah, but I would like everyone to google Marlon Brando
- 13:54Speaker 1: in The Godfather and you'll see and you can just
- 13:58Speaker 1: put in like Marlin ran Godfather line memorization and you'll
- 14:03Speaker 1: see a picture with James Khan with a huge poster
- 14:07Speaker 1: board taped to his chest. Now, I'm not saying is
- 14:11Speaker 1: this real. Yeah, I'll send you guys the picture. I'm
- 14:14Speaker 1: not saying I'm I'm I'm Marlon Brando, but I am
- 14:16Speaker 1: saying you're James Kahn and I uh, yeah, listen, there's
- 14:21Speaker 1: times where you go, I'm fucked. I do not know this, Donald,
- 14:24Speaker 1: would you mind taping this to your forehead?
- 14:27Speaker 2: No, you didn't say, Donald, would you mind? You were like,
- 14:29Speaker 2: come here, No, No, used to I remember taking off
- 14:32Speaker 2: and be like you mother, I will know.
- 14:33Speaker 1: What we used to do is like, whenever there was
- 14:35Speaker 1: a place to hide them out of camera, we'd tape
- 14:37Speaker 1: them to the desk, We'd tape them to whatever. Sometimes
- 14:39Speaker 1: you tape them to the front of the camera. But
- 14:41Speaker 1: I remember that one time I couldn't get it down
- 14:43Speaker 1: and was like the time was running out, and I
- 14:45Speaker 1: was like, Donald, I'm so sorry, but I need my
- 14:48Speaker 1: character needs to be looking at your face. Johnny, you
- 14:54Speaker 1: never did that. Donald, Donald and I would hide our
- 14:57Speaker 1: sides all over the place. I don't have any memory
- 14:59Speaker 1: you ever do it.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Johnny used to have like little notes here and there
- 15:01Speaker 2: in your hand.
- 15:02Speaker 1: No, but not he wouldn't hide them and reference them
- 15:04Speaker 1: during the scene like you.
- 15:05Speaker 4: No.
- 15:05Speaker 2: No, No.
- 15:06Speaker 5: I just if I was struggling with Latin, which all
- 15:09Speaker 5: medical terms are Latin based, if I was struggling with
- 15:12Speaker 5: something in Latin that I hadn't been on the phone
- 15:15Speaker 5: with real JD for an hour the night before I would.
- 15:19Speaker 5: I would fanatically put it on those clipboards that we carried,
- 15:22Speaker 5: and the last second I'd take a look. Now, I remember,
- 15:26Speaker 5: the hardest one ever was broken heart syndrome. Was took
- 15:29Speaker 5: a subo cardio myopathy. And that's about this long, and
- 15:33Speaker 5: I still freaking remember it took a subo cardio myopathy.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Now, legend has it that some of the best home
- 15:43Speaker 2: tests for movies or television shows have happened at your house.
- 15:48Speaker 2: Is it true that you once dug a hole in
- 15:50Speaker 2: your backyard for a part?
- 15:52Speaker 1: No, that's not true. No, what are you talking about.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Why would he dig a hole in his backyard?
- 15:58Speaker 2: I thought he was self taped and was digging a hole.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Oh oh, he's saying that you, you like, got all
- 16:04Speaker 1: into yourself tapes and would dig holes. What would that
- 16:06Speaker 1: be for platoon? Like he's gonna audition something.
- 16:09Speaker 4: No. No, I met with Oliver five times. No, No,
- 16:13Speaker 4: but you did.
- 16:13Speaker 2: But you did used to self tape at home a lot.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Though at some point right well.
- 16:17Speaker 4: When that came into vogue.
- 16:19Speaker 5: Sure, now you can do it on this thing, but
- 16:21Speaker 5: for a little while, you know, there's a camera on
- 16:23Speaker 5: a tripod down there was down in the rehearsal space
- 16:26Speaker 5: and yeah, for a little while.
- 16:27Speaker 4: That that's what auditions came to be.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Yeah, Dony, that's a good segue into into your auditioning
- 16:34Speaker 1: for this. You Donald and I and we asked Sara
- 16:36Speaker 1: to talk a little bit about our experiences. QUI hilarious, right.
- 16:43Speaker 4: I listened to all of it yesterday. It was genius.
- 16:46Speaker 1: So tell us about yours, because you know, and you
- 16:48Speaker 1: heard Bill's telling of yours. But I think I think
- 16:51Speaker 1: our fans are interested and how it all came to be.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Do you remember, like your very first time reading and
- 16:57Speaker 1: all that.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Yeah, because you had already been in so many other
- 16:59Speaker 2: things before this.
- 17:00Speaker 1: I know you were coming to it from a very
- 17:02Speaker 1: different space because you'd been in such amazing movies, and
- 17:07Speaker 1: I just wondered, you know, Donald had done some work.
- 17:10Speaker 1: I had done virtually nothing, So how is it different
- 17:14Speaker 1: for you?
- 17:15Speaker 5: I was coming from because I heard Zachie, I heard
- 17:17Speaker 5: yours with that you were a waiter at the La
- 17:21Speaker 5: Colonial Coloni. Yeah, you were a waiter over there, And
- 17:24Speaker 5: I know Donald had done Denzel's movie and done something.
- 17:28Speaker 5: But I was on a track and how to take
- 17:31Speaker 5: something off of this? So it doesn't sound arrogant, but
- 17:33Speaker 5: I was on about I was on a track of
- 17:36Speaker 5: doing about four films a year, and in my brain
- 17:40Speaker 5: it was that if you ever.
- 17:41Speaker 4: I said yes to everything.
- 17:43Speaker 5: So I did plenty of stinkers, but I just always
- 17:46Speaker 5: felt like that more film begat more film. So I
- 17:50Speaker 5: was just always around the world doing whatever you offered me.
- 17:55Speaker 5: And I wasn't going to come off the film train.
- 17:57Speaker 5: And so then they sent me scrubs and there was
- 18:00Speaker 5: as Billy told you, there was a John McGinley part
- 18:06Speaker 5: in parentheses. It said a John McGinley type for doctor Cox.
- 18:10Speaker 5: And I'm like, well, just make the offer.
- 18:15Speaker 4: And as you mean lack. Yeah.
- 18:19Speaker 5: So I went into meet with Billy over at Disney
- 18:23Speaker 5: and that was great. He was, you know, he was
- 18:26Speaker 5: one of the great guys in the planet.
- 18:27Speaker 4: And then.
- 18:29Speaker 5: By the time, actors do this weird thing when they
- 18:32Speaker 5: get a little too comfortable as they subvert themselves, and
- 18:36Speaker 5: I felt like I did that because there were tears
- 18:38Speaker 5: of different hierarchy that you had to go through on
- 18:42Speaker 5: this thing.
- 18:42Speaker 4: There was the casting people, which I got to skip.
- 18:45Speaker 4: There was Billy.
- 18:46Speaker 5: Then you had to audition to Disney, then you had
- 18:48Speaker 5: to audition at NBC.
- 18:50Speaker 4: And so I tanked the one at Disney. And I
- 18:53Speaker 4: don't know why. I was either lazy or presumptuous or
- 18:58Speaker 4: but a sock.
- 19:00Speaker 1: Donny, did you feel that in the room?
- 19:03Speaker 5: I always know, Yeah, And so I told I said, Billy,
- 19:07Speaker 5: just let me go to the next level.
- 19:09Speaker 4: I'll blow the back of the room out, just don't.
- 19:13Speaker 5: I just filed a few off at at Disney. And
- 19:16Speaker 5: when I went to NBC, as you guys have have
- 19:20Speaker 5: have sorted it out with Billy and Sarah, there's a
- 19:23Speaker 5: room not much bigger than the one I'm sitting in,
- 19:25Speaker 5: maybe sixteen by twenty, and it's the casting guys room.
- 19:30Speaker 4: And there's people on the fennel, on the fence. There's
- 19:33Speaker 4: people everywhere.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Hiding on the city, sitting on the ground over it.
- 19:38Speaker 5: It's like a bad Thanksgiving talent show production with your
- 19:41Speaker 5: aunts and uncles. And so I didn't recognize there were
- 19:45Speaker 5: four or five other doctor Coxes there.
- 19:47Speaker 4: I didn't recognize any of them.
- 19:50Speaker 5: And I was just like, it didn't really matter because
- 19:53Speaker 5: I already did.
- 19:55Speaker 4: Just for actors.
- 19:56Speaker 5: You can get good at auditioning, and I got really
- 20:00Speaker 5: good at it because I used the rehearsal space as
- 20:03Speaker 5: a spot to get this four minute compressed little impression
- 20:08Speaker 5: you make a discipline down.
- 20:11Speaker 4: I got really good at it. The fact that I
- 20:13Speaker 4: tanked that Disney didn't matter. I was doing some other bullshit.
- 20:16Speaker 5: But when I went into that room, I was just
- 20:19Speaker 5: going to fucking kill it.
- 20:21Speaker 4: And I did.
- 20:22Speaker 5: And when I shut the door, and at the time,
- 20:24Speaker 5: I had this Jersey muscle car. I had a Mustang
- 20:26Speaker 5: five point zero black convertible and I started.
- 20:29Speaker 4: Driving home in the one oh one and I was like,
- 20:32Speaker 4: I put Bruce on and it was blaring, and I'm like,
- 20:35Speaker 4: I definitely got that. And if I didn't, the show sucks.
- 20:40Speaker 1: Bill told do you hear Bill's story where he said, Johnny,
- 20:42Speaker 1: how do you feel it? You said, like cash, money
- 20:44Speaker 1: or something like that.
- 20:45Speaker 4: I said it was money. I said money. He said,
- 20:48Speaker 4: if you want to do it again?
- 20:49Speaker 5: And I'm like, I hate when directors say do you
- 20:53Speaker 5: want to do it again?
- 20:54Speaker 4: Because if you got it, you got it. Because all
- 20:57Speaker 4: I do when I do things again.
- 20:59Speaker 5: When you asked me, I'm gonna start changing things, and
- 21:02Speaker 5: I hate rewriting it. If everything's I like to rewrite shit.
- 21:05Speaker 5: I don't like to rewrite anything. I like it on
- 21:07Speaker 5: the page I like to crush it and I like
- 21:09Speaker 5: to leave. And then if you ask me to keep
- 21:11Speaker 5: doing it again and again, I'm gonna get bored because
- 21:13Speaker 5: I know you haven't in the can, and I'm gonna
- 21:15Speaker 5: start changing things. And what I did with doctor Cox
- 21:18Speaker 5: over the years is so I changed his syncopation. I
- 21:21Speaker 5: turned into this kind of Martin Scorsese on LSD thing where.
- 21:25Speaker 4: I did these long pauses. And because I was getting.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Bored and again, like sometimes you'd walk in out and
- 21:33Speaker 1: do some like we like crazy pause.
- 21:35Speaker 4: I was, and I would stretch these words.
- 21:38Speaker 1: And I run want people love that when you go right.
- 21:43Speaker 4: I was bored. I want to fucking some more. I
- 21:47Speaker 4: wanted more challenges.
- 21:49Speaker 5: And so that's the actor's brains if it's really firing,
- 21:51Speaker 5: like our brains were on that thing. Remember, people don't
- 21:54Speaker 5: understand we were there sixteen hours a day, five days
- 21:57Speaker 5: a week. We spent much more time with each other
- 21:59Speaker 5: than we did any semblance of family, because there's a
- 22:01Speaker 5: finite amount of hours in a week. And for nine years,
- 22:05Speaker 5: pretty much we were together for fourteen to by the
- 22:09Speaker 5: end of the week, sixteen hours and in.
- 22:12Speaker 1: An hospital, in an abandoned hospital.
- 22:14Speaker 4: In an abandoned hospital.
- 22:16Speaker 5: And it's almost like Donald will understand when you're practicing
- 22:19Speaker 5: free throws, if you do nothing but practice free throws,
- 22:22Speaker 5: you will get good at it.
- 22:24Speaker 4: You just will.
- 22:26Speaker 5: And by virtue beat just scrub saturation, people got really
- 22:30Speaker 5: good at their jobs.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:33Speaker 2: Yeah, that was the other thing. I remember times where
- 22:36Speaker 2: we'd you'd have like long, long monologues. There were times
- 22:40Speaker 2: where you didn't get it in one take, but then
- 22:41Speaker 2: there were times where you would get it in one take.
- 22:44Speaker 2: And I remember directors being like, should we go again,
- 22:46Speaker 2: and you being like, we got it, let's go, and
- 22:48Speaker 2: like we only got one take, John, and I'm moving on,
- 22:51Speaker 2: let's go.
- 22:52Speaker 1: There's so many Donald Let's go through some of our
- 22:54Speaker 1: favorite johnnyisms. One that just came to my mind was
- 22:57Speaker 1: moving on, you're five good ones for you. There's five
- 23:00Speaker 1: good ones for you. Was when you it would shake
- 23:02Speaker 1: your hand.
- 23:03Speaker 2: How are you better now?
- 23:05Speaker 4: Yeah? Better now?
- 23:06Speaker 1: And then he'd go when we were done with John
- 23:09Speaker 1: Michelle was the name of one of our editors, and
- 23:11Speaker 1: when when when we were done with the scene, he'd go,
- 23:13Speaker 1: I think we gave Jean Michelle some memmo.
- 23:19Speaker 5: Yeah, cut to cut through a couple of days later,
- 23:22Speaker 5: I'm down in the editing suite just micromanaging everything John
- 23:25Speaker 5: Michelle was doing all.
- 23:26Speaker 1: I know. You were always that's.
- 23:27Speaker 2: Where that was like your that was your that was
- 23:30Speaker 2: your escape from hanging out on the third.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Floor from the dogs.
- 23:34Speaker 2: From the dogs, you just run down to editing and
- 23:36Speaker 2: be like, show me what you got.
- 23:38Speaker 5: But I also had a post production company in New
- 23:40Speaker 5: York for when I when I lived in New York
- 23:42Speaker 5: up in the Brill Building for fifteen years, and so
- 23:46Speaker 5: post is a very comfortable place for me.
- 23:49Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, and uh and I just remember you being
- 23:53Speaker 1: even Donald and I were always trying to sneak in
- 23:55Speaker 1: there as well, and you'd be like, I remember, I
- 23:57Speaker 1: have great memories of you being like, come in here,
- 23:59Speaker 1: you gotta see that. You guys to.
- 24:02Speaker 5: Well. People have to understand it was a very insular place.
- 24:06Speaker 5: There was no place to go. It was Scrubs University
- 24:09Speaker 5: in this five story abandoned hospital, and.
- 24:13Speaker 4: You had to be there. You couldn't really go off campus.
- 24:16Speaker 5: You'd get in trouble because invariably we'd skip a scene
- 24:20Speaker 5: and would say where's John and he went down to
- 24:24Speaker 5: do something?
- 24:25Speaker 4: To say he can't go down to do anything.
- 24:27Speaker 1: It's interesting to be on here. When you're on a
- 24:29Speaker 1: back lot, you can saunter around and you can talk
- 24:32Speaker 1: to other shows, and you can talk to people that
- 24:34Speaker 1: have nothing to do with your show. But there was
- 24:36Speaker 1: something I think great that happened on our show in
- 24:42Speaker 1: that we were so insular, Like Johnny said in that hospital,
- 24:46Speaker 1: that it made us extra close because we never went anywhere.
- 24:49Speaker 1: It wasn't like we just all were always together. And
- 24:53Speaker 1: I think.
- 24:55Speaker 5: Something Billy didn't share, which I've brought to different films
- 24:59Speaker 5: and TV shows I've produced since, is Billy introduced the
- 25:03Speaker 5: first or second day of shooting in the cafeteria, which
- 25:06Speaker 5: is the largest space that one hundred and twenty person
- 25:09Speaker 5: crew could all congregate.
- 25:11Speaker 4: He got everybody together.
- 25:13Speaker 5: And he told them that he was going to put
- 25:15Speaker 5: a no asshole policy in place, and everybody laughed, and
- 25:20Speaker 5: you know, sounded kind of stupid, and Billy's the least
- 25:21Speaker 5: confrontational person on the planet.
- 25:24Speaker 4: And what he meant was that if you come to work,
- 25:27Speaker 4: you've got to bring at.
- 25:28Speaker 5: Least a modicum of respect with you, otherwise don't come.
- 25:33Speaker 5: And everybody knows just all the way back to the schoolyard,
- 25:36Speaker 5: how to be nice to each other and how to
- 25:38Speaker 5: be respectful, and a couple of people subsequently got fired
- 25:42Speaker 5: for the no asshole policy. It didn't mean you had
- 25:45Speaker 5: to come to work and walk on pins and needles,
- 25:47Speaker 5: but you had to come to work and be respectful.
- 25:50Speaker 4: And I thought that was great, and I do it.
- 25:52Speaker 5: On my sets now too, and if people don't like it,
- 25:54Speaker 5: they can get the fuck out.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Yeah, that's real talk, you know. Since Scrubs, I've been
- 26:01Speaker 2: a part of cast where you know, everybody's been chill
- 26:05Speaker 2: and lovely and everything like that, but there's there's that
- 26:08Speaker 2: one time where you have that one person where you're like,
- 26:10Speaker 2: oh my god, I wish I was still on Scrubs
- 26:13Speaker 2: right now so I could freaking sit in the background
- 26:16Speaker 2: and watch you get fired for being such a fucking
- 26:18Speaker 2: asshole right now, you know what I mean.
- 26:20Speaker 4: It's not that complicated, It really isn't.
- 26:23Speaker 2: It's really easy to be a good person.
- 26:24Speaker 1: We were really lucky, I think, though. I mean, there's
- 26:26Speaker 1: so many casts that when you hear about a show
- 26:28Speaker 1: that you know there's there's a finite number of shows
- 26:31Speaker 1: that go this long. And we genuinely all really liked
- 26:34Speaker 1: each other. I mean I always say that when I'm
- 26:36Speaker 1: do pressed or someone asked me about the show, and
- 26:38Speaker 1: you know, what was the secret to the magic, and
- 26:40Speaker 1: one of them is that we genuinely all liked each other.
- 26:43Speaker 1: We genuinely all rooted for each other. When we would
- 26:46Speaker 1: see each other at the bar after we wrapped, we
- 26:49Speaker 1: were like just as excited to see you know, Johnny
- 26:52Speaker 1: walk in the door. We and that didn't wear off.
- 26:55Speaker 1: I mean we we we genuinely all loved each other
- 27:00Speaker 1: company for nine years.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Yeah, you know that's you know, that's that's that's actually
- 27:05Speaker 2: very true. We partied so hard. After sixteen hours of
- 27:10Speaker 2: hanging out with each other a day, we would still
- 27:14Speaker 2: be like, yo, Fox and the Hound still has about
- 27:17Speaker 2: two more hours until it closes, and we'd all congregate
- 27:21Speaker 2: at Fox and the Hound after spending the whole day
- 27:24Speaker 2: in some of the night together, man like I would.
- 27:27Speaker 5: I would go back to my hospital room and go
- 27:29Speaker 5: to sleep for the night because I couldn't drive out
- 27:31Speaker 5: to Malibu. And so after after having a couple of beers,
- 27:35Speaker 5: I went back to the hospital, went to sleep.
- 27:37Speaker 2: Wow, and they just woke up the next time.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Johnny tell them about how sometimes you'd come in to
- 27:41Speaker 1: be traffic at like four in the morning.
- 27:43Speaker 5: I would I had this thing where I can't be late.
- 27:46Speaker 5: It's I just can't. I just I can't organize being late.
- 27:50Speaker 5: And so my window was I could leave in a
- 27:54Speaker 5: normal time if I had a call time at six
- 27:57Speaker 5: or at ten, But if my call time was anywhere
- 27:59Speaker 5: between six and ten, I would take a six o'clock
- 28:03Speaker 5: call time and just drive in at five, go to
- 28:06Speaker 5: sleep for a couple hours, memorize all the shit that
- 28:09Speaker 5: Billy was writing, and then.
- 28:10Speaker 4: Be fresh and ready to go. And Plus there was
- 28:13Speaker 4: a shower.
- 28:13Speaker 5: There was a communal shower at the end of our hallway,
- 28:17Speaker 5: and I used that thing all the time.
- 28:21Speaker 2: I've never I think I never showered there. Donald, I
- 28:24Speaker 2: think maybe once or twice.
- 28:26Speaker 4: Oh god, I was in there every day.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Was it was it a good shower?
- 28:29Speaker 4: Was it a it was hot water? End care.
- 28:31Speaker 1: That's all right, We're going to go to a break
- 28:35Speaker 1: and we'll be right book and we're back, and we're back.
- 28:48Speaker 1: We are back, Donald Dum whenever he would seehim again, Lee,
- 28:52Speaker 1: whenever Donald does these ins and outs of a commercial,
- 28:54Speaker 1: he turns into Oprah, We're back.
- 28:58Speaker 4: I heard him do that with Sarah. I was listening
- 29:01Speaker 4: to it on the deck and I was dying.
- 29:05Speaker 2: I could have given you, I could have totally given
- 29:07Speaker 2: you an Oprah introduction, John seem a.
- 29:10Speaker 5: Good night.
- 29:12Speaker 1: I was.
- 29:12Speaker 5: I was thinking about the one oh seven, which is
- 29:15Speaker 5: interesting that we would be doing one oh seven, which
- 29:19Speaker 5: when I looked in my composition book, it was actually
- 29:21Speaker 5: one o six, and it got it got shifted because
- 29:24Speaker 5: of nine to eleven. Yes, and but before we get
- 29:29Speaker 5: into the nine to eleven of it all, which has
- 29:30Speaker 5: a profound impact on this episode.
- 29:33Speaker 4: When I was looking through.
- 29:34Speaker 5: My composition book down in the rehearsal space last night,
- 29:37Speaker 5: when I was looking forward to talking to you guys.
- 29:39Speaker 4: I noticed that I always in the first if you're lucky.
- 29:43Speaker 5: Enough to have to write a lot of different composition
- 29:45Speaker 5: books like we were on Scrubs, I always put a
- 29:48Speaker 5: mission statement on the first page of what I John
- 29:53Speaker 5: not I doctor Cox want to do with this thing.
- 29:55Speaker 5: And I saw that the mission statement on Scrubs was
- 30:00Speaker 5: to find a place underneath the text for with every
- 30:03Speaker 5: episode where you can say I love you to Max.
- 30:06Speaker 5: And I took that seriously because my son Max had
- 30:11Speaker 5: been born a year or two earlier, and when we
- 30:13Speaker 5: started in two thousand and one, and Max was born
- 30:17Speaker 5: with challenges, Max with Roman down syndrome.
- 30:19Speaker 4: He's doing great now.
- 30:20Speaker 5: But I decided that Cox underneath it all, so that
- 30:23Speaker 5: would never became too too drippy, just underneath it. Every
- 30:30Speaker 5: episode there had to be one spot where I got
- 30:32Speaker 5: to say I John, not doctor Cox, got to say
- 30:35Speaker 5: I love you to Max.
- 30:36Speaker 4: And in this episode it's it's right where.
- 30:39Speaker 5: When I'm talking to Judy and I say, just because
- 30:42Speaker 5: a guy has problems, that doesn't mean he doesn't need
- 30:45Speaker 5: and then there's this long pause and it's because I
- 30:48Speaker 5: kept getting an apple in my throat, and then he
- 30:50Speaker 5: says you and I I reminded me that I took
- 30:55Speaker 5: the thing, so god damn seriously, this mission state that
- 30:59Speaker 5: I wrote to Max, Yes, and it informs everything that
- 31:03Speaker 5: Cox does, because I think Zachy knows this. I always
- 31:07Speaker 5: consider the camera an X ray machine that it can
- 31:10Speaker 5: see through all the actors bullshit, and we all try
- 31:13Speaker 5: to bring a walk and a lisp or some eccentricity,
- 31:17Speaker 5: and unless that's distilled down to a real pure instinct,
- 31:22Speaker 5: the camera's just like bullshit.
- 31:25Speaker 4: That's bullshit, and you can see it.
- 31:28Speaker 5: It's night and day, and so that when an actor
- 31:30Speaker 5: actually brings a mission statement that demands that he finds
- 31:34Speaker 5: a place somewhere in the text underneath it, not just
- 31:37Speaker 5: underneath the text, to say I love you to a
- 31:41Speaker 5: kid who is just born with challenges that pops that
- 31:45Speaker 5: the camera goes, Oh, that's his truth.
- 31:48Speaker 4: He's telling the truth, and that's what pops.
- 31:51Speaker 1: I love that you said that, Johnny, because I think
- 31:53Speaker 1: one of the magical things that you did with doctor
- 31:56Speaker 1: Cox was find a guy who's so tough and find
- 32:01Speaker 1: a way in every episode to show that his heart,
- 32:04Speaker 1: that he was doing everything he can to protect everyone
- 32:08Speaker 1: from protect his heart and from people seeing the amount
- 32:11Speaker 1: of love. He actually had super super tough cement exterior
- 32:16Speaker 1: because he was alpha and he was a badass doctor
- 32:19Speaker 1: and he didn't want people to know. But then you
- 32:21Speaker 1: would just it was like it was leaking out of him.
- 32:23Speaker 1: You could you couldn't help it, and you would see
- 32:25Speaker 1: these little moments where it's like, this guy has the
- 32:27Speaker 1: biggest heart, he's just keeping it all under wraps.
- 32:30Speaker 2: That's perfect for this episode that we're talking about right now,
- 32:34Speaker 2: one oh seven. Carla is the only person in the
- 32:38Speaker 2: hospital who's known you long enough at this point to
- 32:42Speaker 2: be able to see through that bullshit. Okay, you're being
- 32:44Speaker 2: tough on all of these people, but you care. You're
- 32:47Speaker 2: you're in it just like you know what I mean.
- 32:49Speaker 2: You're not scared, but you care. And I think that's
- 32:53Speaker 2: what started you, what started Cox. Correct me if I'm
- 32:57Speaker 2: wrong to have feelings for her, like, Okay, well, if
- 33:00Speaker 2: everybody's afraid of me and there's this one person in
- 33:02Speaker 2: the hospital who's willing to stand up to me, not
- 33:07Speaker 2: even stand up, but to call me on my bullshit,
- 33:09Speaker 2: there's a there's a special place in my heart for that.
- 33:12Speaker 2: And I honestly thought that Carla was gonna choose you know,
- 33:16Speaker 2: when we were making the show, I thought she was
- 33:18Speaker 2: gonna choose Cox over Turk. I was kind of hoping
- 33:23Speaker 2: at that when I was younger, that she would choose
- 33:25Speaker 2: Cox over Turk so that I'd have more love interests her.
- 33:31Speaker 1: Oh my god, I can't wait to talk about that
- 33:33Speaker 1: with Judy when she comes on the show. You know, the.
- 33:36Speaker 5: Writers, the writers, as Donald was suggesting, out of that
- 33:39Speaker 5: writer's room came different, nuanced flirtations between Cox and Carla.
- 33:46Speaker 1: I never noticed that this one is obviously really prevalent,
- 33:49Speaker 1: and I hadn't. I hadn't seen this in twenty years,
- 33:50Speaker 1: but I was like, there's a vibe between those two.
- 33:53Speaker 2: Oh, it lashed for the next like five six episodes
- 33:55Speaker 2: and the absolutely yeah it's and then and then Cox
- 33:59Speaker 2: and Turk have it out and then Cox.
- 34:02Speaker 1: Do you remember thinking Donald, do you remember thinking like,
- 34:05Speaker 1: because we didn't know what the fuck the writers were
- 34:06Speaker 1: gonna do, do you remember thinking like, oh, shit, is Judy
- 34:09Speaker 1: is Are they gonna write her to go off with him?
- 34:11Speaker 2: Yeah? I remember thinking that because they had history. That's
- 34:14Speaker 2: the one thing that the two of them out of
- 34:16Speaker 2: everyone in the show, and also Ken's character Kelso the
- 34:20Speaker 2: three of them all have history. But Cox and Carla
- 34:24Speaker 2: have history. Like I imagine Carla Cox was a very
- 34:28Speaker 2: young doctor when Carla came in, you know what I mean, Like,
- 34:31Speaker 2: you know what I mean, she had been there, Carla,
- 34:33Speaker 2: Carla had been there for a while, and so they
- 34:35Speaker 2: knew each other.
- 34:36Speaker 1: That may they may have hooked up.
- 34:38Speaker 2: That's what I thought. I thought there was that one time.
- 34:41Speaker 1: When I was watching today, I was like, these two fucks,
- 34:43Speaker 1: it looks like the two characters have history. Yeah, absolutely, yeah,
- 34:48Speaker 1: and that that that we're gonna take it to our
- 34:50Speaker 1: grave and never speak about this history.
- 34:53Speaker 4: Right, And I like Donald and like you Zachi.
- 34:57Speaker 5: I unabashedly loved Judy h and so that was an
- 35:01Speaker 5: easy thing to groove into.
- 35:03Speaker 1: You guys had great chemistry. And I was really noticing
- 35:07Speaker 1: that again we're watching all these with fresh eyes after
- 35:11Speaker 1: so many years, and I was watching this one, I
- 35:14Speaker 1: was really I don't know, I just was reminded how
- 35:17Speaker 1: good those scenes are when it was you two. You
- 35:19Speaker 1: guys had amazing chemistry together.
- 35:22Speaker 4: Absolutely, I don't think there's any acting going on.
- 35:24Speaker 5: Like I say, the camera is an X ray machine
- 35:26Speaker 5: and it can see through bullshit, and it could see that.
- 35:30Speaker 4: I love Judy rays on a bachelorfor and I always
- 35:35Speaker 4: have that.
- 35:36Speaker 1: Well, let's get into the elephant in the room, because
- 35:38Speaker 1: I was actually really nervous to watch this episode. It's
- 35:41Speaker 1: the first one that I was like, I had a
- 35:43Speaker 1: pit in my stomach because, as Johnny touched on, this
- 35:46Speaker 1: was the episode we were shooting when nine to eleven occurred.
- 35:50Speaker 1: Nine to eleven happened on a Tuesday. Well, we had
- 35:53Speaker 1: shot a Monday and then nine to eleven occurred, And
- 35:58Speaker 1: what we should all tell our stories of that day.
- 36:01Speaker 1: I think I remember I woke up to Howard Stern,
- 36:04Speaker 1: you know when you're half awake and you're listening, and
- 36:06Speaker 1: Howard Stern was talking about it, and it got to
- 36:09Speaker 1: a point where I went, wait what And I leapt
- 36:12Speaker 1: up out of bed and I went and turned on
- 36:14Speaker 1: the TV. And I remember thinking, as we all did,
- 36:18Speaker 1: holy shit, this is what the fuck's happening in the world.
- 36:21Speaker 1: But also as a young actor who just got on
- 36:23Speaker 1: a job, I was like, what are we supposed to
- 36:25Speaker 1: do here? We do we go to work today? Like how?
- 36:27Speaker 1: And I remember I still was like, I think I'm
- 36:29Speaker 1: supposed to still go to work. So I went in
- 36:33Speaker 1: and I remember Sean Hayes, who was our guest star,
- 36:36Speaker 1: was there, and he and I sat in my dressing
- 36:39Speaker 1: room and watched it happen, and shortly that thereafter the
- 36:44Speaker 1: day was canceled. Do you guys want to tell what
- 36:49Speaker 1: your memory of that.
- 36:50Speaker 2: I remember getting a phone call and it was like
- 36:52Speaker 2: five o'clock in the morning. I remember picking up the
- 36:56Speaker 2: phone and recognizing the number and cursing the person out
- 37:00Speaker 2: on the other what the fuck is your problem? I'm working,
- 37:02Speaker 2: I got work in a couple of hours. How why
- 37:05Speaker 2: are you calling me this early, you know what I mean?
- 37:08Speaker 2: And she said, and she over the phone goes, I'm sorry, shit, sorry,
- 37:14Speaker 2: I just wanted to tell you that a plane crashed
- 37:16Speaker 2: into the World Trade Center. And I was like, oh shit,
- 37:18Speaker 2: I'm sorry, whoa what? What? Wait? What? What? And I
- 37:21Speaker 2: ran to the television and I turned it on, and
- 37:24Speaker 2: like everybody else in America, I was stuck watching television
- 37:30Speaker 2: for and then Randall finally called him, was like, we're
- 37:33Speaker 2: not coming into work, you know, but today the day
- 37:36Speaker 2: is canceled. You don't have to come in. But I
- 37:38Speaker 2: remember just sitting in front of the television very much
- 37:41Speaker 2: like I am right now, you know what I mean.
- 37:42Speaker 2: I feel like I wake up every morning and my
- 37:45Speaker 2: and the minute I wake up, I turn on the
- 37:47Speaker 2: news to check to see how many people have COVID nineteen,
- 37:52Speaker 2: how many people we lost because of COVID nineteen, and
- 37:55Speaker 2: what the plan is to figure out how we're going
- 37:58Speaker 2: to get rid of COVID nineteen, you know what I mean?
- 38:00Speaker 2: And I, you know, very for the next week. I
- 38:02Speaker 2: remember that was all that I did was I just
- 38:05Speaker 2: watched the news to see what the heck is America
- 38:08Speaker 2: going to do next?
- 38:10Speaker 1: How about you Johnny, were you called in that day?
- 38:13Speaker 4: Yeah, I went back and looked it up last night.
- 38:14Speaker 5: So the North Tower got hit at five forty five am,
- 38:17Speaker 5: and I would have left about ten minutes after that
- 38:22Speaker 5: to get there, and so I saw the first well
- 38:26Speaker 5: they didn't really show the first but it looked like
- 38:27Speaker 5: a plane went into the first building.
- 38:29Speaker 4: And then I had to go.
- 38:30Speaker 5: And so the South Tower got hit about twenty two
- 38:34Speaker 5: minutes later at six oh three our time, nine oh
- 38:37Speaker 5: three New York time, and so I would have been
- 38:39Speaker 5: listening to it on the news. But all of this
- 38:41Speaker 5: to me, there's something called a mental model, and it's
- 38:44Speaker 5: how you perceive things. In my mental model, it was
- 38:48Speaker 5: it was like the plane that hit the Empire State
- 38:50Speaker 5: Building before we were born. It was a prop plane
- 38:53Speaker 5: that went into the Empire State Building and nothing really happened,
- 38:56Speaker 5: not nothing.
- 38:56Speaker 4: I'm sure some people died and it was horrible, but.
- 38:59Speaker 5: It sounded like that, and so that's how I was
- 39:02Speaker 5: driving into Burbank.
- 39:05Speaker 4: And when I got there that clearly wasn't the case.
- 39:09Speaker 5: And then my brother worked on the sixty second floor
- 39:12Speaker 5: of the South Tower, and so I kept trying to
- 39:16Speaker 5: call them so and pretty early on it became clear
- 39:21Speaker 5: that nobody was going to get through on any lines,
- 39:24Speaker 5: on cell lines or landlines because those everything disconnected on
- 39:28Speaker 5: those towers, and so.
- 39:29Speaker 4: I couldn't get through to my brother.
- 39:30Speaker 5: And this is when an actor's imagination is a curse,
- 39:34Speaker 5: not a blessing.
- 39:34Speaker 4: You only imagine horrible things.
- 39:37Speaker 5: And it turns out in those eighteen twenty minutes, those
- 39:41Speaker 5: intervening times between the North Tower getting hit and the
- 39:43Speaker 5: South tower getting hit on March Trading Desk, they all
- 39:48Speaker 5: had been there when they shake from Newark, New Jersey,
- 39:51Speaker 5: had set off that bomb in the van in the
- 39:53Speaker 5: basement ten years earlier. So everyone in a March's Trading
- 39:57Speaker 5: desk got up when the the first building got hit
- 40:03Speaker 5: and they started to make their way down the stairs.
- 40:05Speaker 5: But it was such a cluster flock going down the
- 40:07Speaker 5: stairs in those eighteen minutes from the sixty second floor down,
- 40:11Speaker 5: they only made it about twenty stories. Everybody from like
- 40:15Speaker 5: seventy two up died, and so Mark got a concussion
- 40:19Speaker 5: going down the stairs.
- 40:20Speaker 4: I don't know how.
- 40:21Speaker 5: He got really disoriented, and by the time he got
- 40:23Speaker 5: out of the building, he wandered up the FDR Drive
- 40:26Speaker 5: to East Harlem, and so he was missing for about
- 40:31Speaker 5: twelve hours, and so it was.
- 40:35Speaker 2: Made all the way to Harlem.
- 40:38Speaker 1: Yes, holy cow, was he just in shock, Johnny, and he.
- 40:40Speaker 4: Walked that far? Yes, wow.
- 40:43Speaker 5: And so I sat in the hospital for all that time,
- 40:46Speaker 5: and then I tried his wife, who lived out in Short.
- 40:49Speaker 4: Hills, New Jersey at the time.
- 40:50Speaker 5: She only had an outgoing message on her machine saying, Mark,
- 40:56Speaker 5: I know you're okay. I've gone over to the Smith's
- 41:00Speaker 5: house and we're waiting for your call there. Well, no
- 41:03Speaker 5: calls came for about twelve hours, and so I sat
- 41:06Speaker 5: in the dressing room thinking horrible things. And then obviously
- 41:10Speaker 5: the buildings came down shortly after that, and what almost
- 41:14Speaker 5: four thousand Americans died, and so that was a that's
- 41:18Speaker 5: the backdrop for us shooting this episode. Yeah, it's kind
- 41:22Speaker 5: of miraculous that the episode even makes any sense that
- 41:27Speaker 5: because of what some of some people were carrying into
- 41:30Speaker 5: the frame.
- 41:31Speaker 4: I agree.
- 41:32Speaker 1: I think it's a weird episode, and I don't know
- 41:35Speaker 1: if I'm bringing my own anxiety of of of the
- 41:38Speaker 1: time to it as I watch it now, But I'm
- 41:40Speaker 1: also going we were all not present for these however
- 41:44Speaker 1: many days, one hundred percent right, absolutely and I felt like,
- 41:47Speaker 1: especially when you look at the first episode Chunk that
- 41:50Speaker 1: we've just watched, which you're like, holy shit, look at
- 41:52Speaker 1: this show. Look at their fire on our all cylinders.
- 41:54Speaker 1: This is the first one where I go, oh, we
- 41:56Speaker 1: all understandably, obviously we all look a little based out
- 42:00Speaker 1: to me.
- 42:02Speaker 5: That's when I watched it last night. I I mean,
- 42:05Speaker 5: there's obviously a lot of funny stuff in it that
- 42:07Speaker 5: I wrote down that made me laugh, but it and again,
- 42:11Speaker 5: like you, Zachi, I can't tell if it's me imposing
- 42:15Speaker 5: my John McGinley onto what Billy Lawrence created for those
- 42:19Speaker 5: twenty one minutes. But you just said disconnected it. It
- 42:24Speaker 5: seemed a little disconnected to me.
- 42:26Speaker 2: This one does. Yes, absolutely, but how could it not be? Right?
- 42:30Speaker 1: Yeah? Right, yeah.
- 42:32Speaker 5: If mcginley's brother, If mcginley's brother just got out of
- 42:35Speaker 5: the what was the South Tower and was missing for
- 42:38Speaker 5: a day, what are you, superman? Of course you're going
- 42:42Speaker 5: to carry that in front of the lens.
- 42:43Speaker 1: Now, do you guys remember we took that Tuesday off?
- 42:46Speaker 1: Did we work the next day or take that day
- 42:48Speaker 1: off as well?
- 42:49Speaker 4: I think we took Wednesday off and we worked Thursday.
- 42:52Speaker 1: Yeah, Now I do remember this. I remember the very
- 42:54Speaker 1: first thing we came back, believe it or not, was
- 42:57Speaker 1: that fucking dog show fantasy. So I remember feeling horribly
- 43:02Speaker 1: guilty that we should a should we even be working.
- 43:05Speaker 1: But I'm under a contract and I'm an actor and
- 43:08Speaker 1: I'm not going to ruffle anybody's feathers. But it should
- 43:11Speaker 1: be we be working. But then' like, yes, everyone's back
- 43:14Speaker 1: to work. Here we go, and I was like, Okay,
- 43:15Speaker 1: what are we shooting. I can do this. We're gonna
- 43:18Speaker 1: do a fantasy where you're a dog at a dog
- 43:20Speaker 1: show and Johnny c is going to feel your balls.
- 43:26Speaker 1: And I was like, the first thing up, Johnny, do
- 43:28Speaker 1: you remember that? It was the first thing up? It
- 43:30Speaker 1: must have been Thursday morning, was me.
- 43:32Speaker 4: I remember now you watch it. I remember it. God,
- 43:35Speaker 4: I remember that I wrote down.
- 43:37Speaker 5: I wrote down that during the dog show flashback, I
- 43:39Speaker 5: had decided to make you both really uncomfortable. And I
- 43:42Speaker 5: think it was because I was really uncomfortable. So I
- 43:46Speaker 5: love actors, and I would never do anything to ever
- 43:48Speaker 5: ever hurt an actor.
- 43:49Speaker 4: Especially when it comes to physical contact.
- 43:52Speaker 5: And I think I was just I was not appropriately
- 43:55Speaker 5: gentle with you guys.
- 43:57Speaker 4: I like took your ear, Zachie.
- 43:58Speaker 5: And you can see, and I took your fucking mouth
- 44:00Speaker 5: and I opened it up, and I told I took
- 44:02Speaker 5: Sean's ear, and I was I was uncharacteristically for me
- 44:06Speaker 5: as an actor, not cos but I love actors so much.
- 44:09Speaker 4: I would never ever do anything to hurt them, and
- 44:13Speaker 4: I would think I was. I was not appropriate with
- 44:16Speaker 4: you two guys on that. I was very rough.
- 44:18Speaker 1: I remember being man handled. Thank you for pantomiming the
- 44:22Speaker 1: testicle part, though, because I think that would have been
- 44:24Speaker 1: a little too rough on on me.
- 44:26Speaker 4: You know, I'm sure at some point I put my
- 44:29Speaker 4: fist up your reck them.
- 44:30Speaker 1: I don't think so, at least not in this episode.
- 44:32Speaker 1: That may have been in later. I think you did
- 44:34Speaker 1: wear me like a hand puppet, but it was in
- 44:36Speaker 1: episode four.
- 44:38Speaker 4: I think during the dog show thingy I may have
- 44:40Speaker 4: engaged you.
- 44:42Speaker 2: Well.
- 44:43Speaker 1: We were joking with Bill about how the crazy sound
- 44:46Speaker 1: effects would would would were slowly phased out. I don't know,
- 44:49Speaker 1: maybe because you were all off in this episode. But
- 44:51Speaker 1: this episode has so many ridiculous side effects, so many,
- 44:55Speaker 1: and there's that there's like a Santa Sleigh jingle bell
- 44:59Speaker 1: noise when you grab my balls that's like the choice
- 45:01Speaker 1: that was made somewhere in the in sound effects editing.
- 45:07Speaker 1: They were like, Okay, what's the noise for Johnny grabbing
- 45:11Speaker 1: JD's balls? Guys, how about a Santa Slave.
- 45:15Speaker 2: Jingle bell o?
- 45:17Speaker 4: You know what? I you know what I thought was
- 45:18Speaker 4: really funny.
- 45:19Speaker 5: Zactly when you and Kenny are up on the roof
- 45:22Speaker 5: and he goes to he does kind of a fake
- 45:24Speaker 5: attacking you up on the roof. Yeah, And whether or
- 45:29Speaker 5: not you're just a great actor or if it was
- 45:32Speaker 5: really weird, it looked really weird.
- 45:36Speaker 1: It's a weird scene, by the way, can I just
- 45:39Speaker 1: I don't understand?
- 45:40Speaker 2: He calls goes you know what your problem is? Yeah,
- 45:43Speaker 2: is that you're a pansy. It's just straight up.
- 45:46Speaker 1: It's a weird scene. And I was waiting for something
- 45:48Speaker 1: to happen. I remember there was a fantasy where I
- 45:50Speaker 1: where I fell off a roof and there was a
- 45:52Speaker 1: stunt man who did a big jump, and I thought, oh,
- 45:53Speaker 1: is that this But it doesn't really go anywhere, and
- 45:56Speaker 1: Ken's just up there smoking a pipe. He calls me
- 45:59Speaker 1: a pansy and then almost throws me off the roof,
- 46:02Speaker 1: like legit, and then like that's the scene.
- 46:05Speaker 5: That's it, And and a couple scenes before that at
- 46:10Speaker 5: Mine forty four when when he goes keep shooting you the.
- 46:14Speaker 4: He he gumps.
- 46:15Speaker 5: Over and gives you a hug, and then Kenny wraps
- 46:18Speaker 5: his leg around.
- 46:19Speaker 1: I think that's a fantasy, Johnny, I will I. I
- 46:21Speaker 1: didn't know what the fuck was happening there either, And
- 46:23Speaker 1: then there's a white flash out of it. I think
- 46:25Speaker 1: that's JD's fantasy because.
- 46:26Speaker 4: Why why would.
- 46:30Speaker 1: He mounted me? Well, I just want to say, I
- 46:33Speaker 1: think that's I wrote down that. I think that's the
- 46:35Speaker 1: only time in nine years that Ken Jenkins ever mounted me.
- 46:41Speaker 2: Can we talk? Can we talk about jerking off real quick?
- 46:44Speaker 1: Yeah? A big as a part of the show or
- 46:46Speaker 1: just in your own life?
- 46:47Speaker 2: Just yeah, we could talk about it both. Let's talk
- 46:50Speaker 2: about both. How about that?
- 46:51Speaker 1: Okay? Good?
- 46:52Speaker 2: Okay. So here's here's here's the one thing I get that.
- 46:56Speaker 2: First of all, we have two callbacks to mash We
- 46:58Speaker 2: have you as a kid playing with your brother, and
- 47:02Speaker 2: this scene, the whole joke off scene is actually a
- 47:05Speaker 2: scene from Mesh the movie, if I'm correct, where they
- 47:10Speaker 2: trick somebody to go into the bathroom and drink off
- 47:15Speaker 2: when did jerking off become a bad thing that you
- 47:17Speaker 2: got to be embarrassed about?
- 47:19Speaker 1: Well, but you're not. You're not supposed to jerk off
- 47:21Speaker 1: at work. Donald write that down as a surgeon.
- 47:26Speaker 2: Got it? So wait, hold up, Okay, So it's so
- 47:29Speaker 2: we're clear. It's okay to masturbate, but once you do
- 47:32Speaker 2: it at work, you've crossed the line.
- 47:34Speaker 1: Yes, I think this could be a service announcement. This
- 47:37Speaker 1: could be a public service announcement for people all over
- 47:39Speaker 1: the world. Don't masturbate a work.
- 47:43Speaker 2: It's crossing the line.
- 47:44Speaker 1: The more you know, and Dan, you can put in
- 47:46Speaker 1: a little more, you know, sound effects there.
- 47:51Speaker 4: I saw something.
- 47:53Speaker 5: I saw something when Donald and I get to do
- 47:55Speaker 5: the scene that comes before this, when we're in the
- 48:00Speaker 5: cafeteria and I tell.
- 48:01Speaker 4: You to go to go And what's the town I
- 48:04Speaker 4: tell you to go to.
- 48:05Speaker 2: Like spank Town or something like something like that.
- 48:07Speaker 4: I forgot, but what I Palmville.
- 48:12Speaker 5: And I have a pet peeve with actors who wait
- 48:17Speaker 5: until they swallow their food to say a line. And
- 48:21Speaker 5: if you notice in that thing, I always take the
- 48:24Speaker 5: soup to hear. It doesn't go in.
- 48:26Speaker 2: No, it never does, don't I.
- 48:30Speaker 1: Never eat by the way, it's disgusting. Whenever there's you
- 48:34Speaker 1: will if you ever see me eating in anything I've
- 48:37Speaker 1: ever done, it's it's rare. I always my character is
- 48:40Speaker 1: always done because I don't want to deal with all
- 48:42Speaker 1: the continuity and eating.
- 48:44Speaker 2: Okay, people are starting to notice that actors aren't eating
- 48:47Speaker 2: on television shows or in movies now. Before before people
- 48:52Speaker 2: didn't necessarily notice. That's something that I think people are
- 48:55Speaker 2: starting to notice now. Other than Brad Pitt, No one eats.
- 48:59Speaker 1: No, whenever I see someone legit eating, Like whenever I
- 49:03Speaker 1: see someone I watch a scene and someone's like eating,
- 49:05Speaker 1: I'm like, oh my god, they ate like that for
- 49:07Speaker 1: probably four hours. Not correct, My character's always done.
- 49:11Speaker 5: Always, but also if it gets in the way of
- 49:14Speaker 5: the actor saying the line and we have to wait
- 49:16Speaker 5: for those of us in a big family, nobody.
- 49:18Speaker 4: Waits to talk until they swallow. There's food in their mouth.
- 49:22Speaker 5: They just segregate it over into kind of a chipmunk
- 49:24Speaker 5: cheek and then they just fire out the words.
- 49:27Speaker 4: Otherwise you'll lose the floor at the dinner table.
- 49:30Speaker 1: Did you guys have go to meals that you know
- 49:32Speaker 1: they were always? There are lots of scenes where were
- 49:33Speaker 1: supposed to have food in front of us. Did you guys
- 49:35Speaker 1: have a go to thing you would ask to be
- 49:36Speaker 1: in front of you steak soup?
- 49:38Speaker 4: Steak me soup because you never have to eat it.
- 49:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I just I'm gonna steal that, Johnny, because I'm
- 49:45Speaker 1: always have a plate of I would always tell them,
- 49:47Speaker 1: can you make it look like I'm done and like
- 49:49Speaker 1: you know?
- 49:49Speaker 4: And no, because with soup you can just the spoon.
- 49:53Speaker 5: The prop of the spoon is it's indefatigable, it's perfect.
- 49:58Speaker 5: It can you can and plush you can quote it
- 50:00Speaker 5: at somebody, you can. It's the prop of the spoon.
- 50:04Speaker 5: You use the spoon.
- 50:05Speaker 2: I always went for steak because I could eat steak forever.
- 50:09Speaker 2: I could eat steak like nobody's business.
- 50:12Speaker 1: So you were eating, you were, you were an eater.
- 50:14Speaker 2: No, but if I did have like there was that
- 50:16Speaker 2: one episode where I did have to eat uh and
- 50:19Speaker 2: because Turk gets really bad heartburn. And it's when UH
- 50:23Speaker 2: had the lockleer was on the show and John c
- 50:26Speaker 2: myself and head a lockleer at some benefit and Carl
- 50:31Speaker 2: is supposed to meet us there and she never shows
- 50:33Speaker 2: up and I wind up eating a bunch of steak
- 50:36Speaker 2: and uh end up in the hospital with really bad heartburn.
- 50:42Speaker 2: Uh So I always went. I always went for steak
- 50:46Speaker 2: because I could eat it. It tastes good, it's easy to season,
- 50:48Speaker 2: throw some salt on it, you know what I mean,
- 50:51Speaker 2: it's it's good to go.
- 50:53Speaker 5: I thought there were a couple of different times in
- 50:55Speaker 5: this episode where despite everything the ensemble one where you
- 51:01Speaker 5: is where you pass the torch to Sean, and Sean
- 51:04Speaker 5: just fits right into the style of the piece, like
- 51:07Speaker 5: he just takes the torch, we pan with you out
- 51:10Speaker 5: a frame, we come back, Sean's put the torch down
- 51:13Speaker 5: and you guys just keep doing your thing.
- 51:14Speaker 1: That was clever. I was cleverly directed. And and I
- 51:17Speaker 1: want to say, it's a rare moment where that's obviously
- 51:20Speaker 1: a fantasy and there was no flash in out of it.
- 51:23Speaker 1: I was clocking that because you know, Bill always delineated
- 51:26Speaker 1: a fantasy with a with a little white flash and
- 51:28Speaker 1: that noise. And this is one of those rare times
- 51:32Speaker 1: where the torch is a character, a prop character in
- 51:36Speaker 1: the piece, and there's no it's both times it comes in,
- 51:39Speaker 1: it's just handed off and not really discussed.
- 51:42Speaker 6: I mean's also what's also interesting with Sean is Sean's introduction,
- 51:46Speaker 6: which would become a classic Scrubs introduction, especially with beautiful
- 51:50Speaker 6: females with wind and slow mow entrances as they walk
- 51:54Speaker 6: down a hall.
- 51:55Speaker 4: Sean gets to come in on top of a gurney.
- 51:57Speaker 5: Saving someone's life and it's just glorious.
- 52:01Speaker 2: Dude, I wrote that down, Johnny. I'm glad you brought
- 52:03Speaker 2: that up because I wrote that down. I think that
- 52:05Speaker 2: might be the best entrance other than other than.
- 52:09Speaker 1: Dick van Dyke.
- 52:10Speaker 2: Dick van Dyke's entrance is pretty amazing too, but that
- 52:13Speaker 2: might be one of the best entrances for male in
- 52:16Speaker 2: Scrubs history.
- 52:18Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, Joelle, do we need to go a
- 52:20Speaker 1: break or we take to go to these lovely people?
- 52:24Speaker 1: All right, We're gonna go take another break and we
- 52:27Speaker 1: come back. We have questions from some fans that are
- 52:30Speaker 1: calling in, and they're gonna have an amazing question, I'm sure,
- 52:33Speaker 1: probably for the legendary JOHNNYE.
- 52:35Speaker 4: McGinley.
- 52:35Speaker 2: I'll give you a hint. Her name's Ashley. As we
- 52:47Speaker 2: have a caller, Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the show.
- 52:52Speaker 2: Ashley Cooper, horrow it.
- 52:55Speaker 1: And friend, do you know much money? Do you know
- 52:58Speaker 1: how much money it cost us to get Orah to
- 53:00Speaker 1: do all these introductions of our guests. It's fortune. Hi, guys,
- 53:05Speaker 1: why did why did Joelle imply that there was something
- 53:09Speaker 1: unique and special about you? Guys? So I wrote in
- 53:13Speaker 1: earlier this week, I was looking if I could figure
- 53:16Speaker 1: out a way for you to to do like a
- 53:18Speaker 1: birthday shout out. This is my husband, Alexander.
- 53:22Speaker 3: Alexander, he is our position and absolutely loves your show.
- 53:29Speaker 2: What's up, man?
- 53:29Speaker 1: How's a deal?
- 53:31Speaker 4: Now? Now?
- 53:31Speaker 1: Donald change? Now?
- 53:32Speaker 2: Donald showed?
- 53:33Speaker 1: Now Donald changed? Donald? Respectful?
- 53:36Speaker 2: Boys, let me show that respect. What is good?
- 53:41Speaker 7: Not too load? Do this right before work? I'm about
- 53:43Speaker 7: to head out of here about an hour.
- 53:45Speaker 1: Oh man, Wow, you're the real deal.
- 53:47Speaker 2: Very much. Thank you so much, very very much for
- 53:50Speaker 2: for calling in. Uh who's going to ask the question?
- 53:54Speaker 2: He is awesome.
- 53:55Speaker 8: This is my birthday, birthday, to your happy birthday, to
- 54:03Speaker 8: your happy birthday.
- 54:07Speaker 5: We called it Jamie Birthday.
- 54:12Speaker 2: He's a grown man, as you know. He works in
- 54:16Speaker 2: the hospital. Not like us. We were fake doctors on
- 54:23Speaker 2: a TV show.
- 54:24Speaker 1: Yes, bringing it home?
- 54:26Speaker 5: Yes?
- 54:28Speaker 1: So wait did you not know about this? Is this
- 54:30Speaker 1: a surprise?
- 54:31Speaker 7: I kept it a surprise for maybe for seconds, and you.
- 54:37Speaker 2: Should have kept it a surprise until you guys zoomed in.
- 54:41Speaker 2: How cool would that been? But then you never know,
- 54:43Speaker 2: you would have been like, who are these guys? Who
- 54:45Speaker 2: are these guys? Right? Who are these guys?
- 54:47Speaker 1: All right? Go ahead, guys, go ahead.
- 54:49Speaker 2: Sure.
- 54:49Speaker 7: So I guess the biggest question is I guess what
- 54:52Speaker 7: it came down to is I watched a lot of
- 54:53Speaker 7: the different Pete medical shows, and I found that throughout
- 54:56Speaker 7: my training so far, and I was attending so far
- 54:59Speaker 7: that the show of Scrub actually portrays how hospital life
- 55:04Speaker 7: really works the most accurate of all the medical shows,
- 55:07Speaker 7: despite it being primarily a comedy. Was that something that
- 55:10Speaker 7: Bill purposely did? Was that something that the staff tried
- 55:13Speaker 7: to incorporate? Because I was, I mean, I listened to
- 55:16Speaker 7: the first one and tell like Donald really good around
- 55:18Speaker 7: the hospital?
- 55:19Speaker 2: No, I was? I was, I was, You're absolutely right.
- 55:22Speaker 2: I was so afraid to go into the hospital at
- 55:24Speaker 2: that point. Listen. Since then, I've you know, I've developed
- 55:28Speaker 2: a a listen if something's wrong or if I feel
- 55:31Speaker 2: like something's wrong, I'm going right to my primary and
- 55:34Speaker 2: we're going to talk about it. Before that, though, I
- 55:37Speaker 2: was just like every other person. You know, in the
- 55:39Speaker 2: African American community, we have a stigma when it comes
- 55:43Speaker 2: to doctors. We're very afraid of the bad news. And
- 55:47Speaker 2: you think I'm joking. But this is the honest to
- 55:49Speaker 2: goodness truth and.
- 55:52Speaker 4: Very right.
- 55:52Speaker 2: I've done. I've done PSA after PSA about talking, you know,
- 55:56Speaker 2: talking about you know, going and getting your numbers known.
- 55:59Speaker 2: Go get your lesterol, get your your BMI, your your
- 56:04Speaker 2: blood pressure, your blood sugar.
- 56:06Speaker 1: I love You're trying to listen them to an er doc.
- 56:11Speaker 2: I'm just trying to listen.
- 56:12Speaker 1: He was like, he was like blue close. You're like, no, no, no,
- 56:14Speaker 1: there's four, there's uh anyway, But Johnny, Johnny, why don't
- 56:20Speaker 1: you answer because you're the special guest about about his question.
- 56:24Speaker 5: I had spent the first three weeks of my son's
- 56:27Speaker 5: life a couple of years earlier in the neonatal intensive
- 56:29Speaker 5: care unit, and I carried most of that was that
- 56:33Speaker 5: functioned largely is all the homework I ever needed for
- 56:38Speaker 5: medical replication, trying to do medical stuff. And uh Max
- 56:45Speaker 5: had different challenges born with down in rome, and he
- 56:47Speaker 5: had microscopicals and hard also we had infatel seizures, We
- 56:51Speaker 5: had all sorts of different challenges. But if you spend
- 56:54Speaker 5: if you're the Akron import is the nick you, if
- 56:56Speaker 5: you spent three or four weeks in the nick you,
- 57:00Speaker 5: you should get enough of that on you to be
- 57:02Speaker 5: able to tell the.
- 57:03Speaker 4: Truth in front of the lens.
- 57:04Speaker 5: And so that that's largely what I was trying to
- 57:06Speaker 5: honor when we were doing that Medical scripts. I think
- 57:10Speaker 5: Bill was relationship stuff.
- 57:12Speaker 1: I think Bill also has said, you know, we knew
- 57:16Speaker 1: we were going to be silly, and we knew we
- 57:18Speaker 1: were gonna have these crazy fantasies, and we knew in
- 57:20Speaker 1: a lot in a lot of ways, it was gonna
- 57:21Speaker 1: be a comedy. So he wanted the baseline. He wanted
- 57:24Speaker 1: to drop in for all the medicine to be as
- 57:27Speaker 1: accurate as possible.
- 57:28Speaker 2: And and that was also something that John Dorris wanted
- 57:34Speaker 2: to the real JD wanted. He was like, listen, you
- 57:37Speaker 2: can make fun of all of the things we did
- 57:39Speaker 2: that I did in college and stuff like that, but
- 57:42Speaker 2: it has to be grounded at the end of the day.
- 57:44Speaker 2: Don't make a fool of us, you know what I mean.
- 57:46Speaker 2: Make sure that that there's truth behind everything as well.
- 57:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that that that's one of the reason works.
- 57:52Speaker 1: And I think the American Medical Association has said, which
- 57:55Speaker 1: we always thought was bizarre, but that they said that
- 57:58Speaker 1: this was the most medical accurate of all the medical shows.
- 58:03Speaker 1: So we always took that as a badge of honor.
- 58:05Speaker 1: And I think Bill was really, really, really proud of that.
- 58:07Speaker 1: He said, we can be as silly as we want
- 58:09Speaker 1: to be when we get into the medicine. It's all
- 58:10Speaker 1: gonna be gonna be real.
- 58:12Speaker 2: And also, yeah, once you get that, once you get
- 58:14Speaker 2: that tag, where you got where someone says to you,
- 58:16Speaker 2: you guys are the most medically accurate, you don't ever
- 58:19Speaker 2: want to fall off that that vandwagon. You want to stay.
- 58:22Speaker 2: You want to stay on that. You want to make
- 58:24Speaker 2: sure that every story, at least in the first at
- 58:27Speaker 2: least in the first eight seasons. I don't know about
- 58:29Speaker 2: season nine, but in the first eight seasons we made
- 58:31Speaker 2: sure to stick to the actual script to keep it real.
- 58:37Speaker 2: As they say, oh, is that an expression? I hear
- 58:41Speaker 2: the kids say that nowadays. Do you have another question?
- 58:46Speaker 7: Yeah, go ahead, So that'll be the I guess the more, hey,
- 58:50Speaker 7: are they more difficult? Question easier? One is what keepsicks?
- 58:54Speaker 7: Did you guys get so rowdy didn't get taken with
- 58:56Speaker 7: you guys. But what about like the TK necklaces or
- 58:58Speaker 7: anything like that.
- 59:00Speaker 5: I'm not a I'm not a souvenir guy, so I
- 59:02Speaker 5: don't ever I should have taken stuff from a lot
- 59:05Speaker 5: of sets.
- 59:05Speaker 4: But it's not. I always thought it was bad luck.
- 59:09Speaker 2: You don't know any scrubs whatsoever.
- 59:12Speaker 1: I don't have any scrubs in my house.
- 59:13Speaker 5: I think it's a I think it's a jink.
- 59:15Speaker 2: What about what about the kicks, because Nike sent us
- 59:18Speaker 2: a bunch of kicks when we were making that show.
- 59:21Speaker 1: That's different.
- 59:26Speaker 5: Swag. Swags are different than top.
- 59:29Speaker 4: Bili.
- 59:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't have any. I have the slate. I
- 59:33Speaker 1: have the slates from episodes I directed. You know the
- 59:36Speaker 1: thing we clap in front of the lens.
- 59:37Speaker 4: You're directing them.
- 59:38Speaker 1: Yeah, And then I have the I have the antlers
- 59:40Speaker 1: from when we did the pilot, when I was a
- 59:42Speaker 1: deer in headlights. Donald is showing you his his.
- 59:45Speaker 2: My scrub sneakers, my hundredth episode sneakers.
- 59:48Speaker 1: Look how warn and ruined they are.
- 59:50Speaker 2: I've rocked these for like a year.
- 59:52Speaker 1: I put mine on a shelf and saved them, and
- 59:54Speaker 1: they're mint and Donald's are all fucked up.
- 59:56Speaker 2: I'm so proud of these.
- 59:57Speaker 5: And look, that's the best rewraps on the planet for
- 1:00:02Speaker 5: for Christmas.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: You guys. Well, one thing that's funny about this podcast
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: on the Zoom Call is that whenever Donald wants to
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: reference a piece of clothing, he doesn't have to move
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: from his seat. He just reaches out of frame and
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: pulls it in.
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: Well, we are in my closet.
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: No, it's just funny, Like you've done that a few
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: times now. It's not even like you have to stand.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: You just reach out a frame and pull out.
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: Well, I'm on my side. I I'm in, like I'm in,
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: Like I'm on my side. So like all of this
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: is me, this is my wife's stuff. So if I
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: really I'm never I was. You know, what I was
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: thinking about doing was turning it all around and doing
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: it from a different angle. But I think I just
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: confuse everyone.
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: No, I love this. I will forever remember this time
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: of doing this podcast and staring at you like it
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: looks like you're sitting on the ground in your closet.
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: You know, it's not every day that we have a
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: real live doctor on the show, right, And so this is,
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: this is this is a pretty special thing. If you
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: have any other questions, feel free to ask us.
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: Well, Donald's giving you the rare third question you can have.
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: It's never been bestowed. It's because you're a real doctor.
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: It's never been bestowed upon anyone.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: In all seven episodes of Fake Doctors, Real Friends.
- 1:01:14Speaker 7: All Right, what was the most emotionally difficult episode that
- 1:01:17Speaker 7: you guys did?
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: Yes, good, Johnny, what's up?
- 1:01:21Speaker 5: I thought this one would have to be right up there,
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: just getting through this one and trying to hew to
- 1:01:29Speaker 5: the style of the piece and not fall too deep
- 1:01:33Speaker 5: deep end of an eleven of it all, it was
- 1:01:35Speaker 5: it was impossible.
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: But Johnny, we have to give a nod to one
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: of the best episodes ever where you were just incredibly
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: good in that Brendan Frasier dying episode.
- 1:01:47Speaker 5: Yeah, but that that we got to act. That was acting.
- 1:01:50Speaker 5: This was this was real life, just killed four thousand people,
- 1:01:53Speaker 5: and and it was I thought it was almost impossible
- 1:01:55Speaker 5: to get.
- 1:01:56Speaker 4: Through this episode.
- 1:01:57Speaker 5: And when I watched it and it actually just made
- 1:01:59Speaker 5: sense that it made sense. Yeah, it's good.
- 1:02:03Speaker 4: Yeah, not great, it's just good.
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: Yeah, But I was gonna say it still has some
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: really genuinely funny parts, and the emotion that Sean has
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: at the end of the episode, and even the and
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: the emotion that you have with Carla at the end
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: of the episode. You talked about that earlier in the podcast,
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: about how it gave you a lump in your throat
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: and everything like that, because you were speaking your truth
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: at that moment.
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: But I.
- 1:02:28Speaker 5: Right, right, absolutely, I think tough like potassium and asked
- 1:02:33Speaker 5: and TikTok tourice. Those things caught me off guard last
- 1:02:36Speaker 5: night when I was watching it.
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: I also, I'm sorry to be I'm sorry to be
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: the guy who laughs at a fart joke, but I
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: legit laughed so hard when when Todd goes the wording
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: of this line is so funny, sir, I farted long pause.
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: That smell is from the fart that I made. You
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: know he heard that line, but the wording of that,
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: the wording of that, I think that's the funniest thing
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: in the whole episode, to be honest, And I'm sorry
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: to be so so simple that I love a fart
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: joke that much, but I just thought the wording of that,
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: that smell pause is from the fart that I made. Meanwhile,
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: the surgeon. What's his name? He's in there, like, what's
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: what's that smell from? What the hell happened? What's going on?
- 1:03:30Speaker 4: That actor? That actor did a good job.
- 1:03:31Speaker 5: Charles kind of a thankless role.
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, he's been in a lot of movies.
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: Actually he was in he was in Dumb and Dunk.
- 1:03:41Speaker 5: He's the guy dry and right down the middle.
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: Yeah, Charles was great, man. He he's stuck around for
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: damn near the whole show. You know what's interesting. I
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: didn't realize Johnny Castle was in the show that much.
- 1:03:54Speaker 5: Me neither.
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: He's in like every episode, even she's Dug.
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: I didn't don't. I really don't remember that Doug had
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: this bigger role in the show. But Doug's dunks. Doug's
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: got a lot of stuff going on. Yeah, thank you
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: guys so much for your questions, and of course, be
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: safe on the on the front lines out there, my friend.
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: We totally appreciate you. Thank you so much, Thank you
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: so so much. Thank you guys, and thank you Ashley
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: for calling in with your husband on so we could
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: have the honor of having some husband your boyfriend that's
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: her husband.
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: Okay, good, I thought you might have been proposing for him,
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: and you just gotta.
- 1:04:30Speaker 5: You get it. If you get a surgeon, man or woman,
- 1:04:33Speaker 5: you you marry that person.
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: Yeah, lock it down, lock it down.
- 1:04:38Speaker 5: You're a guy who got a female surgeon? Is that
- 1:04:41Speaker 5: you marry that?
- 1:04:42Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: Yeah? Be well, take care.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: Guys, all right.
- 1:04:46Speaker 5: I thought Sarah had a really nice beat when Sarah's
- 1:04:49Speaker 5: being overwhelmed for a moment where we're in the closet,
- 1:04:52Speaker 5: she's so good at turning stuff. She just she's really upset,
- 1:04:57Speaker 5: and then she turns it. She puts on that grave
- 1:05:00Speaker 5: face and it's it's a little gem and I have
- 1:05:04Speaker 5: no idea of nine to eleven imprinted on her in
- 1:05:06Speaker 5: some way for that, but she just turns it and
- 1:05:09Speaker 5: it's she's so nimble. I forgot how how fastal she
- 1:05:14Speaker 5: is emotionally.
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: One of my favorite lines in the show is when
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: she goes, I'd let him drool on me, and then
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: the way she looks at Zach after she says it
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: you she met that shit.
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: That's funny. Donald. Do you have any memory of the
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: Fantasy at ten forty seven, which is that post apocalyptic like, no,
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: you're standing by a fire.
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: I I remember after I saw it, I remembered us
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: doing that scene, but I was like, where is this going?
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: I didn't know where it was?
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: Was the the basement?
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: It was a basement. You know What's interesting, I even
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: though this took place during nine to eleven, there are
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: a lot of moments in the show where I was like, well,
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: I don't remember. I don't remember this. I don't I don't.
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: You know, There's there's certain things that I did remember.
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: I remembered Sean Hayes and him getting choked. I definitely
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: remember the last scene with UH, with Johnny and UH
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: and Judy where he kind of slips and professes his
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: love for her. I remembered all of that because that
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: tracked with my story. But other than that, man, you know,
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: I say this every week watching this show is it's
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: it's so much fun for me because I don't remember
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: any of it. It's like I'm watching it with fresh eyes.
- 1:06:37Speaker 5: If you if you weren't in a scene, or let
- 1:06:39Speaker 5: me say this about me, if I wasn't in a scene,
- 1:06:41Speaker 5: I wasn't leaving my dressing room to go watch stuff.
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: Right, But even when the show came on, tell right,
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: this is all brand new for me.
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: But also, Johnny, you weren't smoking long hits, so you
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: probably have. You probably have some of your brain left.
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: So Donald was like, I didn't even know the show
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: is about doctors.
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: I was very young. I smoked a lot of marijuana
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: when I was a kid.
- 1:07:07Speaker 4: Was that?
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: So was that your first correct me if I'm wrong.
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: Was that your guys first scene together, that you telling
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: him to beat off?
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:07:15Speaker 5: It's it certainly seems like it in the concert.
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: I don't know, but well, yeah, yeah, after that, you
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: and I had so many scenes. You know, all of
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: a sudden, I became Gandhi. I don't even know how
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: that came. Was that an improv from you? Did you
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: make up Gandhi? Or was okay? Okay? But yeah, this
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: is this is the beginning of the Cox and Turk Uh.
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: Yeah, your very first encounter you because we were the two.
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: Athletes in the hospital, you know what I mean. And
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: so now it was like, oh, okay, So it was like,
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: you know, Michael Jordan versus Kobe Bryant, you know what
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: I mean.
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: And also he really didn't you know. The whole point
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: was he didn't like you fucking with Carla.
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: In the beginning and actually in the beginning, but as
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: time goes on, the beat that Cox and Turk have
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: is strictly it's all yo. You know this is we
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: have this competitive fire, you know what I mean, and
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: it needs to be and it needs to be, you
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: know way we need to fan that bad boy so
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: that you know, we can live. And so I think
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: Cox and Turk really enjoyed trying to one up each other.
- 1:08:22Speaker 5: I did too, but I thought it was a little manufactured,
- 1:08:25Speaker 5: because again, if the camera is an X ray machine
- 1:08:28Speaker 5: and you can see how it was a little man,
- 1:08:32Speaker 5: it always felt a little manufactured to me.
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: What do you mean?
- 1:08:35Speaker 4: I didn't believe that I had that big of a
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: problem with.
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: You, Okay. I always looked at it as he didn't
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: like that I was with Carla, and because I won
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: and got that one up, he was always trying to
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: get a one up on Turk. That's how I always
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: looked at it. But I guess I just I mean,
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: even in basketball, even when we played, even when we
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: played basketball and you hurt your back in that episode
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: that we do that, even that, you know what I mean?
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: But hey, yeah, you know, I think also the love
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: that we have for each other. I remember my first
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: time being like, Johnny, please don't intimidate me, and you're like,
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: shut the fuck up, nobody's intimidating you. And you're right,
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: You're right.
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: You were always so generous, though, Johnny, with us, because
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: you know, we we we we knew who you were.
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: We both loved your work, and I think both I
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: could think I could speak for both of us when
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: we were like nervous. I was nervous to work with you,
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: and I just want to thank you. You know, for
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: those of you who aren't actors, it's it's the person
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: who's got more of a resume, and this is the
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: bigger star. The onus is always on them to make
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: everyone else feel comfortable around them. And I thought you
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: always were so generous and never made us feel intimidated
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: at all, unless it was obviously in the scene, but
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: as a person.
- 1:09:44Speaker 4: You never did.
- 1:09:45Speaker 5: I felt like we were gonna that this truly was
- 1:09:47Speaker 5: even even though Jackie all respect was number one on
- 1:09:51Speaker 5: the call sheet. I felt like this thing was the
- 1:09:53Speaker 5: truest form of an ensemble and that was never lost
- 1:09:56Speaker 5: on me. And if that arising tide, there's the same
- 1:10:00Speaker 5: horizon tide floats all boats, And I thought we had
- 1:10:03Speaker 5: to do this together or sink. Either either rise or
- 1:10:06Speaker 5: sink together with Billy at the helmet. There was no
- 1:10:08Speaker 5: confusion about that. One time, Billy Rosine, I had to
- 1:10:12Speaker 5: kiss his wife who played my wife or my ex
- 1:10:15Speaker 5: wife on the show, Christa Miller, who is a very
- 1:10:19Speaker 5: dear friend of mine, And so I kissed her, and
- 1:10:23Speaker 5: in the middle of kissing her, she stuck her tongue
- 1:10:26Speaker 5: in my mouth, and I was just I was like,
- 1:10:29Speaker 5: I'm not okay with this, And so I go upstairs
- 1:10:34Speaker 5: with the third floor where our dressing rooms are, where
- 1:10:36Speaker 5: Billy's office goes, and I I knocked on the door
- 1:10:39Speaker 5: and Billy told you saying, and he goes, yeah, come
- 1:10:43Speaker 5: on in and sit down. I go, I gotta, I
- 1:10:45Speaker 5: gotta get something off my chest here. I was just
- 1:10:47Speaker 5: in the scene that you wrote. I was just having
- 1:10:49Speaker 5: a kiss Christa, and she she stuck her tongue in
- 1:10:53Speaker 5: my mouth. And he's such a ballmuster. He gives it
- 1:10:56Speaker 5: a pause and he goes, did you like it? They
- 1:11:02Speaker 5: did it to get me.
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: By the way, Johnny, this dovetails into something I said.
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: This dovetails was something I said earlier. I think Billy
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: has a little bit of a little bit of a
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: thing for that.
- 1:11:15Speaker 5: It was horrorfying. That's kissed by Christ was horrorfying. But
- 1:11:20Speaker 5: the boss's beautiful wife. It makes me nervous even tell
- 1:11:25Speaker 5: him the story.
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: That's so funny. I think I think Billy has a
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: little bit of a special place in his heart for
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: man he likes kissing his wife.
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: I have a question for you, guys, when you watch
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: the show now, do you feel like we foreshadowed so
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: much in every epith Like we foreshadowed a lot in
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: every episode. Like, even when watching this episode, it's pretty
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: clear that Sean Hayes's character, he doesn't have it all together,
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: even though he seems like it, Hey, he has it together,
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: and it's and maybe because we watched the whole episode now,
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: but every time Nurse Roberts came in to address him,
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: he always said, no problem, no problem. And I feel
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: like I feel like that was foreshadowing. Obviously it was
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: a problem and this was going to be the issue
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: that broke him. I feel like, if you watch Scrubs,
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: what we did very well. We presented the problem to
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: you early on and disguised it and disguised it or
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: hit it with comedy and other things. But then at
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: the end of the episode. We always hit you with
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: the drama to make you feel it, but if you
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: watched all the way through, we would leave crumbs and
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: hints that this was coming.
- 1:12:37Speaker 5: I think, yes, yes to that, and I think and
- 1:12:40Speaker 5: it reminded me. I'm reminded of it in the first
- 1:12:44Speaker 5: flashback where Zachi is with his brother and the tag
- 1:12:50Speaker 5: out is we don't even talk that much, or he
- 1:12:53Speaker 5: doesn't talk that much to me, And then there's this long,
- 1:12:57Speaker 5: I don't know, we'll make it up, twenty year disconnect,
- 1:13:00Speaker 5: and when Tommy Kavanaugh shows up at the hospital, all
- 1:13:02Speaker 5: that stuff that Zach had, that Billy had insinuated in
- 1:13:07Speaker 5: that scene yields dividends because they have lost contact. They're
- 1:13:12Speaker 5: completely disconnected, and the disconnect is profound when they're person
- 1:13:16Speaker 5: to person. So when Tommy comes in and Jackie and
- 1:13:19Speaker 5: him don't connect on any level, even the John River
- 1:13:22Speaker 5: of Jackie's father, they don't connect at all. And that's
- 1:13:27Speaker 5: all in that first flashback.
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: Yeah, but not just that, even you missing Jordan the
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: first time we meet Jordan. At the end of it,
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: you're reminiscing about the wedding and all of that stuff.
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: It tracks later on because you guys get back together
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: and you do still love her, even though in between
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: all of that you guys are roaring and you date
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: someone else, and you know what I mean, Billy, it's
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: very good at his.
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: Job, Johnny, did you like this? Did you? Will you
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: come back again onto the podcast?
- 1:13:58Speaker 5: Yeah? It seems it seems impossible to unload the number
- 1:14:02Speaker 5: of stories. And this was a particularly hard episode when
- 1:14:06Speaker 5: I was watching it. It was just a hard episode
- 1:14:09Speaker 5: to a lot of stuff from nine to eleven came
- 1:14:11Speaker 5: back to me, which I don't know if a lot
- 1:14:13Speaker 5: of people it's a heavy handed way of approaching something,
- 1:14:16Speaker 5: but people, actors are human beings.
- 1:14:18Speaker 4: And I was.
- 1:14:20Speaker 5: I was really impacted by nine to eleven in an
- 1:14:25Speaker 5: immediate family way.
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: And to have gotten through this.
- 1:14:28Speaker 5: Episode in retrospect seems impossible to me.
- 1:14:32Speaker 4: And that is that.
- 1:14:33Speaker 5: It's that it's a coherent, well told tale that goes
- 1:14:36Speaker 5: for twenty one minutes. Is good? That's good enough? Yeah,
- 1:14:40Speaker 5: there are there are there are levels of good, better, best,
- 1:14:47Speaker 5: excellent episodes, and this one just goes in under the
- 1:14:51Speaker 5: category of executed.
- 1:14:52Speaker 4: We executed.
- 1:14:53Speaker 5: Yeah, there's some funny stuff in it.
- 1:14:54Speaker 4: And that's good enough.
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: I totally agree. This is the first one. You know,
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: I Donald and I joked when we start doing this, like,
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: you know, there's gonna be ones that we don't like,
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: and we're like, that feels this is the first one
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: that it's something we don't like it. It's just that
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: it's like we all have this Pavlovian response to watching it, going, oh,
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: this just feels wrong and weird, and we remember.
- 1:15:13Speaker 5: I agree, and I'm not discounting to all the great
- 1:15:16Speaker 5: work that everybody did.
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: I was about to say, I feel like everybody did
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: their job so well, though, you know what I mean
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: at the end of the day, regardless of what we
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: were going through at the time, if you didn't know
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: that that was the nine to eleven episode, you're not
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: going to be able to tell, you know what I mean.
- 1:15:34Speaker 5: I don't know. I don't know.
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: That's probably There's so many great jokes and we just talked, yeah,
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: including moments.
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: That smell was the fart that I made. But hey, wait,
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: keep her there, keep her here, have her you the five.
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: Six, seven, eight, Okay, baby, baby, baby Wilder, come here.
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: We want to thank Johnny c McGinley, the legend and Johnny,
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: we really want you to come back because we're just
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: sitting around doing this. Man, we got nothing to do.
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: We're sitting around watching episodes and laughing.
- 1:16:01Speaker 4: Yeah, please come back, he answers a thousand times.
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: Just and now Donald has a very special visitor who's
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: gonna count us into the theme song.
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: Donalder Wilder, my daughter Wilder's here, say a five six
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: seven eight Okay, she said, No, five six seven eight.
- 1:16:15Speaker 3: Stories that show we made about a bunch of talks
- 1:16:21Speaker 3: and nurses in Canada.
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: I said, here's the stories.
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: Next motion.
- 1:16:27Speaker 3: No, so Yander rare you here, Yeader rare here spe
- 1:16:34Speaker 3: We want stories and
- 1:16:38Speaker 4: M
