- 0:16Speaker 1: marshal weighs the evidence in Dodge City. From CBS Radio,

- 0:38Speaker 1: the original broadcast.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Around Dodge City and in the Territory on West, there's
- 0:53Speaker 2: just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 0:56Speaker 2: and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of
- 0:59Speaker 2: gun smoke.
- 1:01Speaker 3: ¶ ¶.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Gunsmoke, starring William Conrad. The transcribed story of the violence
- 1:24Speaker 2: that moved west with young America. And the story of
- 1:28Speaker 2: a man who moved with it.
- 1:30Speaker 4: I'm that man. Matt Dillon, United States Marshal. The first
- 1:34Speaker 4: man they look for and the last they want to meet.
- 1:38Speaker 4: It's a chancy job. And it makes a man watchful.
- 1:43Speaker 5: And a little lonely.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Gunsmoke Hey, Temple.
- 2:17Speaker 5: Move that horse.
- 2:18Speaker 6: You're in over so I can get mine in there.
- 2:20Speaker 6: This hitch rack's pretty crowded, Parris. Can't you tie up
- 2:23Speaker 6: someplace else?
- 2:24Speaker 5: I said move him over.
- 2:26Speaker 7: Here, now, don't do that.
- 2:28Speaker 5: No.
- 2:32Speaker 6: You hit my horse again, I'll shoot you, Parris.
- 2:36Speaker 5: You won't do nothing. What's the matter with you? You drunk?
- 2:44Speaker 6: You gotta complain about something, Tipple. Yeah, Parris, I gotta complain.
- 2:50Speaker 5: Go ahead, Tipple.
- 2:52Speaker 6: I'm waiting.
- 2:53Speaker 5: All right, hold it there, you men. You stay out
- 2:55Speaker 5: of this, Marshal.
- 2:55Speaker 4: Not likely.
- 2:57Speaker 6: Now, look here, Marshal.
- 2:59Speaker 8: I know you're a friend of Tipple's, but I don't
- 3:01Speaker 8: know as I like your protecting him this hard.
- 3:04Speaker 5: I'm not protecting anybody, Parris. I'm stopping a gunfight. Now,
- 3:06Speaker 5: you get moving.
- 3:07Speaker 6: I'll meet you any time, Parris.
- 3:09Speaker 5: You shut up.
- 3:10Speaker 6: We'll meet right now. Well, you ain't got your nursemaid around.
- 3:19Speaker 6: Why'd you stop it, Matt? He had it coming to him.
- 3:23Speaker 5: You're pretty hot-tempered, aren't you, Ben?
- 3:25Speaker 6: Did you see what he done?
- 3:26Speaker 5: That's no reason to shoot a man, and you know it.
- 3:28Speaker 1: An ordinary man know, but that Paris has been looking
- 3:30Speaker 1: for trouble for a long time.
- 3:32Speaker 5: I know what he's like. But you keep away from him, Ben.
- 3:35Speaker 6: It's bound to happen, Matt, sooner or later, and I
- 3:38Speaker 6: don't hide from no man. You know me well enough
- 3:40Speaker 6: for that.
- 3:58Speaker 9: This doggone old river is awful high for this time
- 4:00Speaker 9: of year, ain't it, Mr.
- 4:01Speaker 6: Dillon?
- 4:02Speaker 5: It must have been having some big rains up in Colorado.
- 4:06Speaker 6: Oh, now that's where I'd like to be. Up in
- 4:09Speaker 6: them tall, cool mountains.
- 4:11Speaker 5: Oh, my.
- 4:14Speaker 9: Just think of laying.
- 4:15Speaker 8: On your back up there in the deep grass, drinking
- 4:19Speaker 8: snow water and eating trout, listening to all them pretty
- 4:24Speaker 8: birds singing away.
- 4:26Speaker 5: We'll miss you, Chester.
- 4:28Speaker 6: Oh, I ain't going nowhere.
- 4:33Speaker 5: Look on the bank there.
- 4:35Speaker 6: Some fellow fishing.
- 4:38Speaker 5: He must have fell asleep. He isn't asleep, Chester.
- 4:45Speaker 6: No, sir. I don't believe he is.
- 4:52Speaker 9: Well, that's Frank Pass, Mr.
- 4:59Speaker 6: Dillon.
- 5:00Speaker 5: Yeah. Shot in the back.
- 5:05Speaker 6: That's terrible.
- 5:09Speaker 5: There's his pole.
- 5:12Speaker 9: He was sitting here fishing and somebody sneaked up and
- 5:15Speaker 9: shot him. Oh, that's a mean way to die.
- 5:19Speaker 5: We'll get a wagon and carry him back to Dodge.
- 5:22Speaker 6: All right.
- 5:24Speaker 5: Get on, Chester.
- 5:27Speaker 6: I can't see nobody.
- 5:30Speaker 5: All right, come out of there. You can't get both
- 5:33Speaker 5: of us. Come out or we'll start shooting.
- 5:35Speaker 6: Don't shoot, Marshal.
- 5:36Speaker 7: I'm coming.
- 5:39Speaker 6: Well, it's only a kid. It's Andy Spangler.
- 5:43Speaker 5: Andy, what are you doing out here? Nothing, Marshal.
- 5:46Speaker 2: I was going to go fishing, but I lost my line.
- 5:49Speaker 5: Why were you hiding in the brush, sir?
- 5:51Speaker 1: Him.
- 5:52Speaker 5: I heard a shot some time ago, and I come
- 5:54Speaker 5: looking around. I found him laying there, and I got
- 5:57Speaker 5: scared when I heard you ride.
- 5:58Speaker 10: Up, so I hid.
- 5:59Speaker 5: You didn't see anybody? No, I didn't see nothing. Whoever
- 6:03Speaker 5: did it was gone.
- 6:04Speaker 9: Oh, my goodness, Mr.
- 6:05Speaker 6: Jones.
- 6:05Speaker 5: What is it, Chester?
- 6:07Speaker 9: Well, the way Frank and Ben Tipple was carrying on.
- 6:13Speaker 9: You don't suppose Ben could have did it, do you?
- 6:16Speaker 9: I know he's a good friend of yours.
- 6:18Speaker 5: Never mind, Chester. Well, let's get back to town. Come on, Andy.
- 6:27Speaker 5: You can ride behind me.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Hello, Ben.
- 7:05Speaker 6: I'm mad. Come in. I was about to take a
- 7:11Speaker 6: little nap. Now it's cooled off some.
- 7:16Speaker 5: Ben, you heard what happened to Frank Parrish yesterday? Yeah. Yeah,
- 7:23Speaker 5: I heard. Well?
- 7:27Speaker 6: Are you asking me if I did it, Matt?
- 7:31Speaker 5: Most everybody in Dodge thinks you did. And what do
- 7:33Speaker 5: you think?
- 7:35Speaker 4: Well, I've been telling everybody I've known Ben Temple a
- 7:37Speaker 4: long time and that he's hot-tempered and that Frank Paris
- 7:41Speaker 4: has been prodding him every chance he had.
- 7:44Speaker 5: But that Paris didn't even have his gun up. Besides,
- 7:47Speaker 5: he was shot in the back. What are people saying
- 7:51Speaker 5: to that?
- 7:53Speaker 4: They're saying you're a friend of mine. They think that's
- 7:56Speaker 4: why I haven't arrested you.
- 7:58Speaker 5: Is it? I'd go after my own brother if I
- 8:02Speaker 5: thought he murdered a man, Ben.
- 8:08Speaker 6: Happened yesterday morning sometime, didn't it, Matt?
- 8:11Speaker 5: Yeah, that's right.
- 8:13Speaker 6: I got no alibi for then. I wasn't with nobody.
- 8:18Speaker 5: Yeah, that's too bad. It would have helped.
- 8:26Speaker 6: I might have shot Frank Perry someday, Matt. But never
- 8:30Speaker 6: in the back.
- 8:31Speaker 5: I know that, Ben. But until I find out who
- 8:35Speaker 5: did it, you better lay low. Just look at this place, Matt.
- 8:55Speaker 5: What's wrong, Kitty? Well, it may be the biggest saloon
- 8:58Speaker 5: in Dodge.
- 8:59Speaker 6: But it's surely emptiest.
- 9:01Speaker 5: You're getting greedy, Kitty. And it's about time.
- 9:03Speaker 6: I'm sure not getting younger.
- 9:05Speaker 5: You're going to be able to retire before you're 30.
- 9:07Speaker 11: Why not?
- 9:10Speaker 5: Well, I'm glad somebody's getting rich around here. Law sure isn't.
- 9:15Speaker 6: No. But the law keeps busy.
- 9:18Speaker 5: What?
- 9:19Speaker 6: Joe Spangler and his pa. I think he's looking for you, Matt.
- 9:23Speaker 12: Oh.
- 9:28Speaker 6: Evening, Miss Kitty.
- 9:29Speaker 12: Evening.
- 9:29Speaker 6: I want to talk to you, Marshal.
- 9:33Speaker 5: Go ahead, Spangler.
- 9:34Speaker 11: I want to know why you ain't got Ben Tipple
- 9:37Speaker 11: in jail.
- 9:40Speaker 5: Frank Paris was a friend of yours, wasn't he? That
- 9:42Speaker 5: don't matter.
- 9:44Speaker 4: And it doesn't matter that Ben Tipple's a friend of mine.
- 9:47Speaker 5: He didn't do it, Spangler. There's a lot of people
- 9:51Speaker 5: who think he did, Marshal. You have any proof?
- 9:54Speaker 11: I'm a boy, Andy, I think he saw Tipple out there.
- 9:59Speaker 11: And I'll get it out of him. I whipped him
- 10:02Speaker 11: once already.
- 10:03Speaker 4: Look, Spangler, your boy would have told me if he'd
- 10:05Speaker 4: seen anybody. Why would he try to protect Ben Tipple?
- 10:08Speaker 6: Scared.
- 10:09Speaker 5: Scared of what?
- 10:09Speaker 3: You.
- 10:11Speaker 11: What you might do to him if he talked.
- 10:19Speaker 5: Just a minute, Spangler.
- 10:21Speaker 6: He's gonna talk before I'm through with him.
- 10:24Speaker 5: You get out of here. You're making me mad. Well, no,
- 10:28Speaker 5: I didn't aim to do that, Marshal.
- 10:31Speaker 11: All I wanted is to get you to do your
- 10:34Speaker 11: job before somebody has to do it for you.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Easy, Mac.
- 10:43Speaker 5: Yeah. I ought to take him apart.
- 10:51Speaker 6: That wouldn't help.
- 10:52Speaker 5: It'd make me feel better.
- 10:55Speaker 6: You'll be all right.
- 10:56Speaker 5: Soon you'll find out who did kill Paris. How am
- 10:58Speaker 5: I going to find that out, Kitty?
- 11:00Speaker 4: With all this going on, he's as safe as a
- 11:02Speaker 4: bear in a hickory tree.
- 11:05Speaker 3: The End.
- 11:18Speaker 9: Well, looks to me like you're going to have a
- 11:20Speaker 9: busy day today, man.
- 11:22Speaker 5: I am? Why, Doc?
- 11:23Speaker 1: Well, I don't know.
- 11:24Speaker 9: Now, maybe it's because you did so little yesterday.
- 11:29Speaker 5: Do I owe you some money or something, Doc?
- 11:31Speaker 7: Oh, no, no, no.
- 11:32Speaker 6: You're all paid up.
- 11:33Speaker 5: But, you know, man, I've been thinking. How much you want, Doc? Oh,
- 11:39Speaker 5: ten dollars would do it. Here you are. Oh, thank you.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Sure, Doc.
- 11:47Speaker 5: Just pay it back by Friday, that's all.
- 11:49Speaker 7: Oh, no.
- 11:50Speaker 5: You think I was merely asking for a loan? You
- 11:53Speaker 5: have your own way of doing things, Doctor. So's he. What?
- 12:01Speaker 11: Look.
- 12:02Speaker 5: That filthy spangler. He's cuffing his boy around again. I've
- 12:09Speaker 5: had about enough of his ways.
- 12:10Speaker 6: I warned you, boy. I warned you what you did.
- 12:16Speaker 5: I didn't mean to do it.
- 12:18Speaker 6: You won't learn, will you?
- 12:20Speaker 5: All right, that's enough, Spangler.
- 12:22Speaker 7: Fine.
- 12:23Speaker 6: You just get out of here, Marshal. You ain't interfering
- 12:27Speaker 6: in this.
- 12:27Speaker 5: Let the boy go, Spangler. Let him go. I said
- 12:31Speaker 5: that's enough. Andy, you stand over here. He won't hit
- 12:39Speaker 5: you again.
- 12:40Speaker 1: I didn't mean to do it. I told him I didn't.
- 12:43Speaker 5: What did you do, Andy?
- 12:44Speaker 7: I lost his rifle.
- 12:46Speaker 2: I borrowed it to go hunting and I fell across
- 12:48Speaker 2: the river and I lost it.
- 12:49Speaker 6: I ought to kill you, Marshal.
- 12:51Speaker 5: Don't try it, Spankler. Now, come on, get on your feet.
- 12:54Speaker 6: What right do you.
- 12:55Speaker 11: Got to come between the man and this boy?
- 12:58Speaker 5: None, I guess, but I took it anyway.
- 12:59Speaker 11: That kid ought to be in jail stealing like he does.
- 13:02Speaker 5: He wasn't stealing. It ain't none of your business, Marshal.
- 13:06Speaker 11: I ain't going to talk to you about it.
- 13:09Speaker 5: Andy, I'll see to you later. You beat him again
- 13:15Speaker 5: and I'll throw you in jail. He won't beat me
- 13:18Speaker 5: because I ain't going home. Not ever. Now, what'll your
- 13:22Speaker 5: mother think, Annie? I got no.
- 13:26Speaker 6: Mother.
- 13:27Speaker 5: Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot, Annie. And he hates me. Look, Annie,
- 13:34Speaker 5: if things get bad, you come see me, huh? Anytime.
- 13:39Speaker 5: Will you do that?
- 13:41Speaker 7: Maybe.
- 13:41Speaker 3: Maybe.
- 13:41Speaker 4: Now, don't let your pa make you say anything that
- 13:43Speaker 4: isn't true, Andy. You don't have to. You understand?
- 13:47Speaker 12: Now, all right.
- 13:52Speaker 5: Now, you just remember, you can come see me any time.
- 14:15Speaker 7: Boy, ain't this a pretty night, Mr.
- 14:30Speaker 6: Dillon.
- 14:31Speaker 9: Look at all them stars up there just a-shining away.
- 14:35Speaker 4: Yeah, and look at all those lights in the saloons
- 14:39Speaker 4: just a-shining away.
- 14:42Speaker 6: You ain't much of a nature lover, are you?
- 14:45Speaker 4: Not while I got work to do, Chester.
- 14:47Speaker 5: What work?
- 14:48Speaker 4: Well, for the next few hours, I got to walk
- 14:50Speaker 4: around and try to make sure nobody's going to get
- 14:52Speaker 4: cheated or get too drunk or get killed, maybe.
- 14:57Speaker 6: You're right. Sometimes that can turn into work. Well, looky there.
- 15:01Speaker 6: It's Andy. Now, what's he up to?
- 15:04Speaker 7: Marshal Dillon?
- 15:06Speaker 5: Yeah, what's the trouble, Andy?
- 15:07Speaker 6: They're in that alley right back there.
- 15:09Speaker 3: Come on, hurry.
- 15:09Speaker 11: Come on.
- 15:10Speaker 5: Well, who's in the alley?
- 15:11Speaker 1: Paul and Ben Tippett.
- 15:13Speaker 7: Paul's got them cornered.
- 15:14Speaker 5: What?
- 15:14Speaker 7: Paul's got the drop on him.
- 15:16Speaker 1: He hid out in there and waited for him to
- 15:17Speaker 1: come by.
- 15:18Speaker 5: But how do you know? What were you doing there?
- 15:20Speaker 6: I thought Paul was after me. But he's going to
- 15:22Speaker 6: shoot Ben Tippett. I know he is.
- 15:23Speaker 5: Well, maybe I can stop him, Andy.
- 15:25Speaker 6: I hope so, but I don't know how.
- 15:27Speaker 7: All right.
- 15:28Speaker 5: Let's slow down here. You wait here with Chester, Andy.
- 15:34Speaker 5: I'm going to go in there alone.
- 15:39Speaker 10: If you are being named Tim Tipu. Well, as well
- 15:43Speaker 10: admit it and you know it. I wouldn't abide to
- 15:46Speaker 10: shoot Frank Parrish, but not in the back, not even him.
- 15:50Speaker 10: I guess I'm going to have to kill you.
- 15:52Speaker 5: You'll die yourself if you pull that trigger, Slinger.
- 15:56Speaker 6: Marshal.
- 15:58Speaker 5: Now you drop that gun.
- 16:00Speaker 6: No.
- 16:01Speaker 11: He killed Frank Parrish and I'm going to shoot him
- 16:04Speaker 11: if I die for it myself.
- 16:06Speaker 5: Don't be a fool.
- 16:07Speaker 6: He's got my gun, Matt.
- 16:09Speaker 5: Just stand steady, Ben.
- 16:10Speaker 10: Marshal.
- 16:11Speaker 5: Get back, Andy. I've got to tell you something.
- 16:14Speaker 6: He slipped away from me, Mr. Dillon.
- 16:16Speaker 5: It's terribly important. Help me keep an eye on Spangler, Chester.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Yes, sir.
- 16:20Speaker 5: All right, now, what is it, Andy? Hurry up.
- 16:21Speaker 6: Bend over.
- 16:21Speaker 5: I've got to whisper.
- 16:22Speaker 6: What?
- 16:25Speaker 5: What's going on there? Never mind.
- 16:27Speaker 9: You've got two men who will shoot you now, Spangler,
- 16:29Speaker 9: and you better not try nothing.
- 16:31Speaker 6: I'm getting mighty tired of this. What's that kid doing
- 16:34Speaker 6: here anyway?
- 16:35Speaker 9: Well, he didn't come here to murder nobody like his
- 16:37Speaker 9: pa did.
- 16:38Speaker 6: Ben Temple was the murderer, not me.
- 16:41Speaker 5: No, he isn't, Spangler. Temple didn't shoot Frank Ferris. You
- 16:45Speaker 5: said that before, Marshal. Andy did it. Andy? He just
- 16:50Speaker 5: told me.
- 16:52Speaker 6: What are you saying?
- 16:53Speaker 5: It was an accident.
- 16:54Speaker 4: He saw something move and he thought it was an animal,
- 16:57Speaker 4: so he fired at it.
- 16:58Speaker 6: I don't believe it.
- 16:59Speaker 5: The day he took your rifle.
- 17:01Speaker 4: When he found he'd shot Parris, he got scared and
- 17:03Speaker 4: threw the rifle into the river.
- 17:05Speaker 5: You tell him, Andy.
- 17:06Speaker 6: It's true.
- 17:07Speaker 5: I was too scared to tell anybody before. All right.
- 17:12Speaker 5: You heard him, Spangler. Now put up that gun.
- 17:15Speaker 6: I don't believe him. He's lying. You stay where you are, Bush.
- 17:20Speaker 5: Put up your gun, I said.
- 17:22Speaker 6: Not hardly. You killed him, Matt.
- 17:37Speaker 4: He almost killed me, Ben. Andy, I'm sorry about your pa.
- 17:49Speaker 4: But you go with Chester now, huh?
- 17:53Speaker 6: He wasn't my pa.
- 17:55Speaker 11: What?
- 17:56Speaker 5: My real pa died a long time ago.
- 17:59Speaker 6: Mama told me about it when she made me change
- 18:01Speaker 6: my name.
- 18:02Speaker 11: Oh.
- 18:04Speaker 5: I guess that's why he never did like me much.
- 18:07Speaker 5: Beat me all the time. Yeah. Marshall. What, Andy?
- 18:13Speaker 6: When are you going to hang me?
- 18:16Speaker 5: Hang you? For shooting Mr.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Parris.
- 18:21Speaker 5: Is that what you've been thinking? I admitted doing it,
- 18:25Speaker 5: didn't I? It was an accident, Andy. Nobody's going to
- 18:28Speaker 5: hang you. Ben.
- 18:32Speaker 1: What, Matt?
- 18:34Speaker 5: He's a mighty brave boy.
- 18:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:39Speaker 6: Yeah, he sure is.
- 18:41Speaker 1: Why, he spoke up just now to save my life,
- 18:44Speaker 1: thinking he'd be hung for it, didn't he?
- 18:48Speaker 6: Andy, how'd you like to come home with me?
- 18:51Speaker 5: I got a place for a boy like you. You
- 18:56Speaker 5: mean that? I sure do. Marsha, you believe me, you
- 19:00Speaker 5: think he means it? Yeah, Andy.
- 19:05Speaker 12: I think he means it.
