- 0:00Speaker 1: A couple of things from this morning's poll on the
- 0:01Speaker 1: capital gains tax. Basically, we're evenly split, as many of
- 0:05Speaker 1: us are in favor of Labour's plan as are against that.
- 0:07Speaker 1: It's about thirty nine percent. Apiece results are interesting though
- 0:11Speaker 1: the details of them so more Aucklanders hate it than
- 0:15Speaker 1: the rest of the country. Forty five percent of jaffers
- 0:18Speaker 1: oppose it, only thirty two percent support it. Now Auckland
- 0:21Speaker 1: holds the keys to the Kingdom electorally, as Labor found out,
- 0:25Speaker 1: and that's starting defeat at the polls. Two years ago
- 0:27Speaker 1: Auckland lockdowns collapsed their vote, as did the cost of living.
- 0:31Speaker 1: So if you're national, that's where you focus your anti
- 0:35Speaker 1: capital gains tax campaign. It's also interesting and the herald
- 0:39Speaker 1: piece on the pole this morning makes this point. In
- 0:41Speaker 1: areas where people are doing well, you know, where house
- 0:44Speaker 1: prices haven't caved, haven't collapsed, there's more support for it
- 0:49Speaker 1: in areas are so less support for in areas that
- 0:52Speaker 1: are feeling poor because their house prices have fallen through
- 0:55Speaker 1: the floor, they don't like it so much. So basically
- 0:59Speaker 1: you have a squeezed middle voter telling you in Auckland,
- 1:04Speaker 1: probably telling you that they feel too poor to support
- 1:07Speaker 1: another tax, and so you end up with this fight
- 1:09Speaker 1: between people who like the sound of an idea and
- 1:13Speaker 1: people who feel it will threaten their chance of getting
- 1:16Speaker 1: wealthier or growing wealth. And then you've got to ask yourself,
- 1:20Speaker 1: will the tax do what it says on the label?
- 1:22Speaker 1: Will it pay for millions of extra doctor visits? You
- 1:24Speaker 1: know where? Will these doctors magically appear from? Does the
- 1:28Speaker 1: party that is offering this utopia have a good track
- 1:34Speaker 1: record with delivering on promises, particularly if they tell you
- 1:37Speaker 1: how much but not really how quite important. You could
- 1:42Speaker 1: look at this pole and you could think it's a
- 1:43Speaker 1: win for the Capital Gains because it sort of is
- 1:45Speaker 1: sort of, but there is plenty of fodder for an
- 1:48Speaker 1: anti Capital Gains campaign, which is no doubt being workshopped
- 1:53Speaker 1: by some ad agency in gray Lynn for the National Party.
- 1:57Speaker 1: As we speak. For more Early edition with Ryan Bridge,
