- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up, Longhorn Nation?
- 0:01Speaker 2: And just take a giant exhale knowing that the comeback
- 0:05Speaker 2: will not ensue. And even though it was sloppy and
- 0:07Speaker 2: it went down to the wire, number one, you never
- 0:09Speaker 2: apologize for a win. And number two, you certainly don't
- 0:12Speaker 2: apologize for a win in the SEC in an environment
- 0:15Speaker 2: like Neyland Stadium.
- 0:16Speaker 1: But there is a lot of things to clean on up.
- 0:18Speaker 2: And there are things that you just look at moving
- 0:20Speaker 2: forward that are a part of Texas football that I
- 0:22Speaker 2: don't think can be corrected in 2026. But I do
- 0:26Speaker 2: think that there is a reason to still believe that
- 0:27Speaker 2: the Longhorns can control their destiny towards a national championship
- 0:32Speaker 2: and certainly at least make the college football playoff. And
- 0:33Speaker 2: there is a reason to believe in hope long-term down
- 0:36Speaker 2: on the 40 acres.
- 0:38Speaker 1: What is that?
- 0:38Speaker 2: Well, let's discuss following a 20-17 victory over Tennessee and Neyland.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Welcome on into SEC Football Addiction. Cole Thompson here.

- 1:16Speaker 2: its own destiny after facing the jaws of defeat and
- 1:19Speaker 2: a throw by Faison Brandon that could have been caught
- 1:23Speaker 2: and it would have saved everything?
- 1:25Speaker 1: Because they have the best defense in the SEC.
- 1:28Speaker 2: I think that you come away today asking yourself, what
- 1:31Speaker 2: can we hold our hats on? What is the positive
- 1:33Speaker 2: in this game? And there aren't a lot that you
- 1:35Speaker 2: can go with. But Texas may have the best defense
- 1:38Speaker 2: in college football. They certainly have the best defense in
- 1:40Speaker 2: the SEC. If I were to tell you that this
- 1:44Speaker 2: running game, headlined by Deshaun Bishop, was held to less
- 1:48Speaker 2: than 100 yards, that it took two players averaging roughly
- 1:53Speaker 2: three yards of play, and 1.6 yards on the afternoon,
- 1:57Speaker 2: that that was going to be the stat line, I'd
- 1:59Speaker 2: say Texas won this game by 15 points.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Double-digit score.
- 2:02Speaker 2: If I told you that you were able to take
- 2:04Speaker 2: away Braylon Staley for the most part, nothing going on
- 2:08Speaker 2: with the tight end play, Deshaun Bram was your number
- 2:10Speaker 2: three receiver with 24 receiving yards, and nobody broke on
- 2:13Speaker 2: open besides a Mike Matthews 30-yard touchdown late, and we'll
- 2:16Speaker 2: get to that in a moment, I say Texas wins
- 2:19Speaker 2: this game by at least double digits.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Well, they did those things. And they got after Faison Brandon.
- 2:24Speaker 2: One of the keys that I said going into this
- 2:26Speaker 2: matchup that was so dire for Texas was if you
- 2:29Speaker 2: wanted to win and you want to send a statement,
- 2:32Speaker 2: you had to make Faison Brandon beat you. You took
- 2:34Speaker 2: away the run game. This is what happens when you're
- 2:37Speaker 2: able to make an offense one-dimensional. And as much as
- 2:39Speaker 2: I think that Faison Brandon showed you some mature moments
- 2:42Speaker 2: in that final drive finding of Mike Matthews, as much
- 2:45Speaker 2: as I do think that you see the growth and
- 2:47Speaker 2: why there is belief that he can be the answer
- 2:49Speaker 2: out in Knoxville, You made him go up against an
- 2:52Speaker 2: elite defense and said, if you're going to win, you're
- 2:55Speaker 2: going to win because if you're better than us, then
- 2:56Speaker 2: simply you weren't.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Ten sacks on the day.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Half of which came by the best player on the
- 3:02Speaker 2: defensive side in the Southeastern Conference, Colin Simmons. Twelve tackles
- 3:06Speaker 2: for losses. Making this a game where it was all
- 3:09Speaker 2: defensive battles, pedal to the metal, unrelentless, unyielding type plays.
- 3:15Speaker 2: What you want to see from a unit that you
- 3:17Speaker 2: can believe will be the backbone of this team in 2026.
- 3:20Speaker 2: And that's what it is right now. Defensive line got
- 3:23Speaker 2: an after phase on Brandon. And it's not just Colin Simmons.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Alex January made some critical stops. Manad Watson made some
- 3:29Speaker 2: critical stops. What you saw with Lance Jackson, Hiro Kanu, Zena.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Everyone stepped on up and said, if you're going to
- 3:36Speaker 2: win this football game, it's going to come off of
- 3:38Speaker 2: your arm beating us downfield.
- 3:39Speaker 1: And we're going to take that away from you as well.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Because we know that our coverage is going to be
- 3:43Speaker 2: slacked down, basically in step with every receiver that we
- 3:48Speaker 2: are going to make sure that you have no time
- 3:50Speaker 2: to throw. And when you do finally get time to throw... Well,
- 3:53Speaker 2: that pocket is closing. And here comes Colin.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Simmons off the edge. And here's where it's about to
- 3:58Speaker 1: go blank.
- 3:59Speaker 2: And kids, shield your eyes because what's going to happen
- 4:01Speaker 2: to this quarterback is not going to be pretty. And
- 4:03Speaker 2: that's why Texas won this football game. Because their defense
- 4:06Speaker 2: was able to deliver early on. Their defense kept Tennessee
- 4:10Speaker 2: out of the end zone. Their defense did everything possible
- 4:14Speaker 2: to make life hell for Faison Brandon. And the good
- 4:17Speaker 2: news is that it can do that for every team.
- 4:20Speaker 2: It can do that in two weeks when you face
- 4:21Speaker 2: off against Oklahoma and Red River. It can do that
- 4:24Speaker 2: when you face off against Ole Miss and Trinidad and Chambliss.
- 4:26Speaker 2: It can do that when you face off against Texas
- 4:28Speaker 2: A & M and Kyle Field late in the season.
- 4:30Speaker 2: It can do that in Death Valley against Sam Levin
- 4:32Speaker 2: and company. They can make life hell. And that is
- 4:36Speaker 2: what you hold your hat on today. If Texas had
- 4:39Speaker 2: a better offense, this game would have been a double-digit lead.
- 4:43Speaker 2: If Texas had anything else going for it on the
- 4:46Speaker 2: special team side, this could have been a double-digit lead.
- 4:49Speaker 1: And I know that they blew it in the last second.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Mike Matthews cornered the end zone 30-yard strike. That was
- 4:55Speaker 2: less than ideal. But if we're going to talk about
- 4:58Speaker 2: this game in its entirety, you have to look at
- 5:00Speaker 2: it through a full lens. Number one, Texas' defense stepping
- 5:03Speaker 2: on up and forcing a lot of third and longs,
- 5:06Speaker 2: taking away the rushing attack of Tennessee. One of the
- 5:08Speaker 2: most dangerous rushing games in college football.
- 5:12Speaker 1: You give them credit.
- 5:14Speaker 2: You also make sure that you call them out when
- 5:15Speaker 2: there are things that are wrong. Because this is my
- 5:17Speaker 2: big takeaway number two. If you want to play this
- 5:21Speaker 2: version of football, this slop that we constantly see, the negation.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Of penalties, you got to call you out for it.
- 5:27Speaker 2: 11 penalties for 115 yards. And that alone is a
- 5:31Speaker 2: losing formula. Like thankfully you played against a quarterback that
- 5:35Speaker 2: was a young gun getting acclimated to SEC football and
- 5:38Speaker 2: you gave him a welcome to the show on Saturday moment.
- 5:40Speaker 1: That's what happened. Because I don't know if you survived
- 5:42Speaker 1: this if it comes down to any other quarterback who
- 5:45Speaker 1: has experience. With 11 penalties.
- 5:48Speaker 2: And as much as you can praise Colin Simmons for
- 5:50Speaker 2: how he played today, because he was lights out, phenomenal
- 5:54Speaker 2: getting off of the edge, you also have to call
- 5:56Speaker 2: him out for one of the dumbest penalties that you
- 5:58Speaker 2: have ever seen. You gave them a free play and
- 6:01Speaker 2: you took minutes off of the clock that could have
- 6:03Speaker 2: been there for your offense. I don't know if the
- 6:05Speaker 2: offense would have done anything, but I sure as hell
- 6:08Speaker 2: can tell you when you allow plays like that to happen, careless,
- 6:12Speaker 2: everyone criticizing you and well-deserved for it, It leads to
- 6:17Speaker 2: opportunities for a team to strike. Better offenses will take
- 6:21Speaker 2: those advantages and they'll be able to run it down
- 6:23Speaker 2: the field and find their way into the end zone.
- 6:25Speaker 2: And if they don't find their way into the end zone, well,
- 6:27Speaker 2: at least they get a field goal and now we're
- 6:28Speaker 2: going to overtime. You can criticize somebody while also complimenting them.
- 6:33Speaker 1: As good as Colin.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Simmons played today, set a Texas record in sacks. The
- 6:39Speaker 2: tomfoolery and the dumbassness of what we saw on that
- 6:43Speaker 2: penalty alone, one of several I-can't-believe-this-happened penalties from a veteran defense,
- 6:50Speaker 2: it's one that you have to wonder what the hell
- 6:51Speaker 2: is going on. Why is this a thing? Why is
- 6:55Speaker 2: this something that we are now bringing on up in conversation?
- 6:58Speaker 2: Why is this even a possibility to be something that
- 7:00Speaker 2: we need to address?
- 7:02Speaker 1: And that's the worst part about this.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Bad penalties on the offense, terrible holding calls at times,
- 7:08Speaker 2: Hands to the face at the worst time possible to
- 7:10Speaker 2: give a second chance?
- 7:13Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know what else you want to say.
- 7:15Speaker 2: The undisciplinedness today nearly cost Texas a win and put
- 7:20Speaker 2: them in a position to where they enter Red River
- 7:22Speaker 2: where everyone is going to doubt them to be a
- 7:24Speaker 2: playoff team. Let alone they're already doubting you now for
- 7:27Speaker 2: letting Tennessee come back in this game and the fact
- 7:29Speaker 2: that your offense has no life. But plays like that,
- 7:33Speaker 2: the things that you can avoid, how is this possible?
- 7:36Speaker 2: How is this happening? And it's a shot at the
- 7:39Speaker 2: coaching staff because you don't have your team prepared for
- 7:41Speaker 2: these type of moments. And it's a shot at Steve
- 7:43Speaker 2: Sarkeesian for not being able to have people in the
- 7:46Speaker 2: position to make sure that they're not putting their team
- 7:48Speaker 2: behind the eight ball in moments like this. All it
- 7:51Speaker 2: takes is a quick little celebration, and here's 15 yards
- 7:54Speaker 2: and a fresh set of downs. Because that's what we
- 7:56Speaker 2: saw from Faison Brandon. Third and long, now turns into
- 7:59Speaker 2: a fourth and punt. Wait, no, because we got to
- 8:02Speaker 2: go ahead and walk the dog and water the grass,
- 8:05Speaker 2: and now it's 15 yards. And Colin Simmons got benched
- 8:08Speaker 2: for that reason for the drive, for half of the drive.
- 8:10Speaker 1: For good reason.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Because you can't cost your team in those type of moments.
- 8:15Speaker 2: If you have 115 yards and penalties, 95% of the
- 8:19Speaker 2: time when it's this close of a score, you should
- 8:21Speaker 2: have won the football game.
- 8:23Speaker 1: And what happened was the better team prevailed. That's about it.
- 8:26Speaker 1: That's all you can say in that moment.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Hey guys, I'll get right back to the video, but
- 8:29Speaker 3: first I want to make sure you are subscribed both
- 8:32Speaker 3: here on this channel, on the main channel, College Football Addiction,
- 8:36Speaker 3: and to our audio feeds. You can check out our

- 8:59Speaker 3: All of the conference football addictions, College Football Addiction, and
- 9:01Speaker 3: of course, The Power 2. All right, back to the clip.
- 9:05Speaker 1: If there's another thing you got to look at is
- 9:07Speaker 1: this offense.
- 9:08Speaker 2: I understand that Arch Manning is not having to play
- 9:10Speaker 2: hero ball in the way that Trinidad Chambliss does for
- 9:12Speaker 2: Ole Miss or the way that even Julian Singh does
- 9:15Speaker 2: by finding an open receiver like Jeremiah Smith downfield. But
- 9:19Speaker 2: at some point, we just have to have an honest conversation.
- 9:21Speaker 1: This offense is remedial. It's lost its spark. It's lost
- 9:24Speaker 1: its juice.
- 9:25Speaker 2: And you're not really seeing anybody break away. Ryan Wingo
- 9:28Speaker 2: had himself a decent day because at least he was
- 9:30Speaker 2: able to be a factor in the passing game.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Where was Cam Coleman?
- 9:33Speaker 2: And partially you could say, yeah, you took it away
- 9:35Speaker 2: by Kay and Lee and Dejon Lane playing in coverage.
- 9:38Speaker 2: And the one time that you try to go deep downfield, well,
- 9:40Speaker 2: look who was there. Kay and Lee with the interception
- 9:42Speaker 2: by Arch.
- 9:44Speaker 1: It's a problem. And it definitely is.
- 9:46Speaker 2: But at the same token, the play designs, the construct,
- 9:50Speaker 2: it's so basic and elementary. And this is a guy
- 9:53Speaker 2: who praises himself of being an offensive guru. How many
- 9:57Speaker 2: times during the game today were you not sitting there asking?
- 10:00Speaker 2: a Longhorn fan and saying, how is that the play
- 10:02Speaker 2: call that you're going with? Why is this the reason
- 10:05Speaker 2: that you're going out of your way to put us
- 10:07Speaker 2: in a position of where we know we're losing yards?
- 10:10Speaker 1: No Hollywood smothers.
- 10:11Speaker 2: It didn't really matter because you couldn't run the football either. 1.7
- 10:14Speaker 2: yards of play. Thankfully, Relique Brown found the end zone
- 10:16Speaker 2: twice when you were in the red zone.
- 10:18Speaker 1: That's about it.
- 10:19Speaker 2: But you can easily see why is this being a design?
- 10:22Speaker 2: How about in the red zone on the opening drive
- 10:24Speaker 2: where you have to settle for a field goal? You
- 10:25Speaker 2: get the big, big strike downfield to Emmitt Mosley. You're
- 10:28Speaker 2: inside the 20.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Everyone knows what's working for you. Everyone knows. My apologies.
- 10:33Speaker 1: The touchdown on the opening drive. How is this possible?
- 10:38Speaker 2: How is your play calling so remedial that even a
- 10:41Speaker 2: Jim Knowles defense that's trying to figure it on out
- 10:44Speaker 2: is able to make plays, is able to kind of
- 10:46Speaker 2: read and react?
- 10:47Speaker 1: They don't put themselves in this position.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Arch Manning goes 14-19 for 201 yards and an interception.
- 10:53Speaker 1: And he runs for negative one yards.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Because by the way, we can talk about the sack
- 10:57Speaker 2: total that we saw from one side with 10. It's
- 11:00Speaker 2: not like that the offensive line in Texas played that
- 11:02Speaker 2: much better. They gave up six sacks in this game.
- 11:04Speaker 2: They also gave up 10 tackles for losses. So it
- 11:07Speaker 2: became a problem. It became a big problem almost instantaneously.
- 11:11Speaker 2: And you got to ask yourself at this point, What
- 11:14Speaker 2: needs to change? What are we going to see from
- 11:16Speaker 2: Steve Sarkisian dialing up some new coverages, some new packages
- 11:20Speaker 2: that will make this as explosive as we once thought?
- 11:23Speaker 2: Because I don't see it right now. And I don't
- 11:25Speaker 2: think anybody does. And Arch Manning, as good as we
- 11:28Speaker 2: think that he can be, right now it's a big if.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Not taking that away to say that you need him
- 11:33Speaker 2: to be this folklore that Paul Feinbaum and others have
- 11:36Speaker 2: pegged him up to be. But you sure as hell
- 11:38Speaker 2: are not seeing the guy that closed out 2025 in
- 11:40Speaker 2: the early part of 2026. You're watching basic mistakes, overshot balls,
- 11:46Speaker 2: and give credit where credit's due, some good defensive play
- 11:49Speaker 2: from Tennessee, but you're also watching a pedestrian-style play design unfold,
- 11:54Speaker 2: and the results aren't finding their way into the end zone.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Texas had opportunities to be able to strike, put their
- 12:00Speaker 2: foot down on the gas, and never let up.
- 12:02Speaker 1: And lo and behold, they couldn't. It wasn't possible.
- 12:05Speaker 2: And here we are right now, watching as Texas wins
- 12:08Speaker 2: by three because a Hail Mary failed attempt Is the
- 12:11Speaker 2: only reason why you're here.
- 12:14Speaker 1: How do you allow that punt return? I mean, how
- 12:16Speaker 1: do you allow that kickoff return? To be able to
- 12:18Speaker 1: bounce off the hands.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Because Ryan Wingo, you give him praise for what he
- 12:21Speaker 2: did as a playmaker in the open field. Guy finished
- 12:24Speaker 2: the day with six catches for 74 yards. He had
- 12:26Speaker 2: three catches of over 15 yards downfield.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Also muffed up the punt.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Nearly cost you a game. Little details go such a
- 12:35Speaker 2: long way. Which brings me to my final point. And
- 12:37Speaker 2: if you haven't already, like the video, hit the ring notification,
- 12:39Speaker 2: subscribe to the channel. There is this world where we
- 12:41Speaker 2: are going to have an honest conversation about what is
- 12:44Speaker 2: defining the number one team in the country. Texas has
- 12:48Speaker 2: the best winning college football. You don't take that away
- 12:50Speaker 2: from them. They were able to capitalize on the mistakes
- 12:52Speaker 2: made by Ohio State in the second half of that game,
- 12:54Speaker 2: and they found their way into the end zone three times.
- 12:56Speaker 2: And Arch looked damn good. And the play calling looked good.
- 12:59Speaker 2: And the execution was on point. And there was exact
- 13:03Speaker 2: details that you needed to see to believe that Texas
- 13:06Speaker 2: could be the team that would run through the SEC.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Absolutely, no questions asked.
- 13:13Speaker 2: But just because you have the best running college football
- 13:15Speaker 2: doesn't mean that you're the best team. The team that
- 13:17Speaker 2: we saw take the field today has problems. The team
- 13:21Speaker 2: that we saw on the field today is undisciplined. The
- 13:24Speaker 2: team that we saw on the field today was underwhelming
- 13:28Speaker 2: offensively and kind of predictable. And now you ask yourself
- 13:33Speaker 2: moving forward, what happens if this is the product we
- 13:36Speaker 2: put out when we go down to Baton Rouge? What
- 13:39Speaker 2: if this is the product we put out when we
- 13:40Speaker 2: welcome and train at Chambliss? What if this is the
- 13:43Speaker 2: product we put out when we have to take on
- 13:45Speaker 2: other opponents that we know for a fact are starting
- 13:48Speaker 2: to click at the right time? Are we sure that
- 13:51Speaker 2: we're the number one team in the country? I have
- 13:53Speaker 2: no problem, by the way, with saying that Texas belongs
- 13:55Speaker 2: at number one. Texas has the best winning college football,
- 13:58Speaker 2: and this early point in the season, there's so much
- 14:00Speaker 2: uncertainty and non-separation that you can guarantee that If you
- 14:06Speaker 2: want to leave Texas at number one, I got no fault.
- 14:09Speaker 1: But at some point, you got to start looking the part.
- 14:12Speaker 2: And I know it's against weaker competition, but Ohio State
- 14:14Speaker 2: has looked the part in every game, including the Texas game,
- 14:17Speaker 2: except for that fourth quarter. Miami has looked the part,
- 14:19Speaker 2: except for the fourth quarter against Wake Forest. You have
- 14:22Speaker 2: needed a comeback, and you nearly blew it on the
- 14:25Speaker 2: road when you were up by double digits with four
- 14:27Speaker 2: minutes left. And it's not because of Tennessee was able
- 14:31Speaker 2: to capitalize. You were still getting after Faison Brandon defensively.
- 14:34Speaker 2: You still were making plays. It's because of one busted
- 14:38Speaker 2: coverage and bad execution. And more specifically, it's because of
- 14:41Speaker 2: the penalties and the lack of execution earlier in the game.
- 14:45Speaker 2: At this point, I think it's abundantly clear. If you
- 14:48Speaker 2: are a Texas fan, Steve Sarkisian's offense ain't working anymore.
- 14:51Speaker 2: And you got to figure out a way to get
- 14:52Speaker 2: rid of it by the offseason. If you still have
- 14:56Speaker 2: Steve Sarkisian on your staff, And you've got to bring
- 14:58Speaker 2: in a new running backs coach.
- 14:59Speaker 1: I saw somebody tweet this out earlier. I don't remember
- 15:01Speaker 1: who it was. But get Rashad Choice back here. Because
- 15:04Speaker 1: you want to know what? It worked.
- 15:06Speaker 2: I don't know what it was. I don't know what happened.
- 15:08Speaker 2: But get him back here. Go get Rashad Samples if
- 15:10Speaker 2: you can. That's a guy who understands running back rooms.
- 15:13Speaker 2: But the running back position averaging 1.6 yards a play.
- 15:16Speaker 2: When you have a player like Relique Brown. Who did
- 15:18Speaker 2: find his way into the end zone twice. Who did
- 15:21Speaker 2: finish with 67 rushing yards. But that's under 4 yards
- 15:24Speaker 2: a clip. Something ain't working. Something's not there. Texas wins.
- 15:29Speaker 2: Texas survives. Texas' defense will keep them in games. But
- 15:33Speaker 2: you are going to need an offense to counteract what
- 15:35Speaker 2: your defense does. Otherwise, we're talking about basically the Houston
- 15:39Speaker 2: Texans needing their defense to probably get a pick six
- 15:42Speaker 2: to end this and make sure the game is out
- 15:44Speaker 2: of reach. You survive and you got an off week
- 15:46Speaker 2: to go ahead and get this right. But come Red River,
- 15:49Speaker 2: two weeks in Dallas, I don't think that Oklahoma's offense
- 15:52Speaker 2: is going to be finding a spark anytime soon. But
- 15:54Speaker 2: you sure as hell can't give them opportunities for short
- 15:56Speaker 2: field positions to go ahead and capitalize. We all know
- 15:58Speaker 2: how that game goes. And it makes you have a
- 16:01Speaker 2: pit in your stomach realizing that if things are not
- 16:03Speaker 2: cleaned on up, once again, we may have the roster
- 16:06Speaker 2: and the talent good enough to go on a run
- 16:08Speaker 2: to the college football playoff. But we may be sitting
- 16:10Speaker 2: at 9-3, shooting ourselves in the foot because of our
- 16:13Speaker 2: own mental mistakes. Can't afford to have careless penalties and
- 16:17Speaker 2: ill-advised execution at the worst time possible. to let a
- 16:20Speaker 2: team hang around too close for comfort. It didn't bite
- 16:22Speaker 2: you in the ass today. It can easily do it tomorrow.

- 16:52Speaker 2: Until next time, Hook'em Nation, you won a football game,
- 16:55Speaker 2: you survived. Hopefully it doesn't come back to be a
- 16:57Speaker 2: problem long-term, but there's a lot of things you got
- 16:59Speaker 2: to clean on up if you think that you're going
- 17:00Speaker 2: to be a playoff contender. And you got two weeks
- 17:02Speaker 2: to get it figured out before you walk them on
- 17:03Speaker 2: in Oklahoma and Red River. Peace.
