- 3:26Speaker 4: University's takeover of Charleston will commence with the annual Paint
- 3:29Speaker 4: the Capital City Green event at the Marshall University bill
- 3:32Speaker 4: No Fights School at Westfordiny International Younger Airport. Get into
- 3:35Speaker 4: way about six o'clock. I'll be serving as the MC
- 3:38Speaker 4: here to talk about it now. The voice of the
- 3:39Speaker 4: Thunder and Heerd Steve Cotton. Good morning, sir, and welcome
- 3:42Speaker 4: to the show.
- 3:43Speaker 6: Well, good morning, Dave. It is the first day of
- 3:46Speaker 6: classes at Marshall University. We're what about an hour and
- 3:50Speaker 6: ten minutes beyond the first classes for a lot of
- 3:55Speaker 6: people taking the first class of their lives. A new
- 3:57Speaker 6: group of freshmen in here.
- 4:00Speaker 4: Remember, let's go back to your your college days. Do
- 4:03Speaker 4: you remember your first day of class Steve at university?
- 4:08Speaker 6: Yes, University of Florida down in Gainesville, Florida and huge Campa. Yeah.
- 4:14Speaker 6: The campus is about a mile long from one end
- 4:17Speaker 6: to the other, and you park about a mile as
- 4:20Speaker 6: a commuter student beyond from the near side of campus.
- 4:24Speaker 6: So it was those first few days trying to find
- 4:28Speaker 6: your way around, you know, a campus that had at
- 4:31Speaker 6: that time close to thirty thousand students and so yep,
- 4:34Speaker 6: right now. I feel some empathy for the people walking
- 4:37Speaker 6: around with a little campus map and they're not quite
- 4:40Speaker 6: sure how to find whatever. And it's even extra confusing
- 4:45Speaker 6: for anybody who's ever been. My office is in the
- 4:47Speaker 6: cam Henderson Center, next to Gallason Hall, the old building,
- 4:53Speaker 6: and it's amaze And people have classes in gallocks In
- 4:56Speaker 6: Hall that they cannot find, so they're wandering through the
- 4:58Speaker 6: Henderson Centers. I don't know where I am. So that's
- 5:02Speaker 6: going on this week.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Yeah, it's you know, and I feel like I missed
- 5:06Speaker 4: out on a little bit of that because I went
- 5:07Speaker 4: to a Community of Technical College for two years and
- 5:09Speaker 4: then I transferred to Marshall, so I missed the dorm
- 5:12Speaker 4: life experience.
- 5:13Speaker 7: You know.
- 5:13Speaker 4: I had an apartment my first my two years at
- 5:17Speaker 4: Marshall to finish up there, so I feel like I
- 5:20Speaker 4: missed out a little bit, But I you know, being
- 5:22Speaker 4: on there's a big difference between the campus of Southern
- 5:25Speaker 4: West Virginia Community of Technical College in Logan and Williamson
- 5:29Speaker 4: compared to Marshall University, so I know what those students
- 5:32Speaker 4: are going through. We're got a course getting ready for
- 5:34Speaker 4: football season. Steve coach Tony Gibson is there. We have
- 5:37Speaker 4: a new athletic director and Cherald Harrison, a whole lot
- 5:40Speaker 4: of new players getting ready to open up on the
- 5:42Speaker 4: road against Georgia here in a couple of weeks. So
- 5:45Speaker 4: that's an exciting time.
- 5:48Speaker 6: I am the old guy at this point who is
- 5:52Speaker 6: reminiscing about the years when I had to learn about
- 5:55Speaker 6: maybe fifteen newcomers. I'm the football roster who might play
- 5:58Speaker 6: that year. And now it's that's not just Marshall that
- 6:01Speaker 6: Oh yeah, the world we live in now and it
- 6:04Speaker 6: is exciting. You have so much new every year. A
- 6:07Speaker 6: few weeks ago, I got the ballot from the Sun
- 6:12Speaker 6: Belt Conference wanting preseason polls and all that kind of thing.
- 6:15Speaker 6: I thought, how does anybody know what they're Everybody has
- 6:20Speaker 6: at least fifty new players, and so every year is
- 6:25Speaker 6: even more new. You know less than you did about
- 6:28Speaker 6: your team than you would have even a decade ago.
- 6:31Speaker 4: It's the times, As mister Dylon said, they are a
- 6:35Speaker 4: changing in the world of college athletics. Again, this is
- 6:37Speaker 4: not just a marsh university thing. They're dealing with it
- 6:40Speaker 4: in Morgantown, They're dealing with it at college campuses across America.
- 6:43Speaker 4: We're talking to Steve Cotton, the voice of the Thundering
- 6:45Speaker 4: Nerven Dave Island Show on five. Any Life is Brought
- 6:47Speaker 4: to You part by Morgan to Morgan, America's largest injury
- 6:50Speaker 4: law firm. Arioight, Let's get ready to Paint the Capital
- 6:51Speaker 4: City green. It's coming up Thursday night at the bill
- 6:54Speaker 4: No Flight School at West Virginia International Jaeger Airport STEE.
- 6:57Speaker 4: For those that have never been to a Paint the
- 6:59Speaker 4: Capital City event, talk about what kind of mayhem that ensues.
- 7:04Speaker 6: It is certainly unique, and unique is an overused word,
- 7:09Speaker 6: but I don't know of any other school that goes
- 7:13Speaker 6: with an event like this at the airport and a
- 7:16Speaker 6: giant hangar that is wonderful. The bill No Flight School
- 7:20Speaker 6: is a gem of Marshall University. You have those Kelly
- 7:24Speaker 6: green planes in and out, and then you know the
- 7:30Speaker 6: way they decorate the hangar and all the electronics and everything.
- 7:34Speaker 6: It is a one of a kind. Coach Gibson, as
- 7:37Speaker 6: a first year coach, we talk about all the newness
- 7:39Speaker 6: every team has every year, but Marshall even more so
- 7:42Speaker 6: you have him. He'll be a part of the program.
- 7:45Speaker 6: Both basketball coaches Corney Jackson of the men and women's
- 7:48Speaker 6: coaches Julie Foulkes, I know, Keith Roberts, track and field
- 7:52Speaker 6: head coach Ian waaltsh the swimming coach, are all scheduled
- 7:55Speaker 6: to be a part of the program and there will
- 7:57Speaker 6: be many others there as well. It is a.
- 8:00Speaker 4: Evening, it is indeed, and again proceeds will benefit the
- 8:03Speaker 4: Big Green. The entire thing being put on by the
- 8:06Speaker 4: marsh University Quarterback Club of Charleston. It's this Thursday night.
- 8:09Speaker 4: Of course, I'm going to be serving as the MC
- 8:10Speaker 4: and and normally Steve Animal is with me, Steve Cotton,
- 8:15Speaker 4: but he had a prior commitment. He'll be at Fife
- 8:17Speaker 4: Street Live for a live broadcast that night, so they're
- 8:20Speaker 4: going to be stuck with me. We have the live auction.
- 8:22Speaker 4: As you said, the coaches are going to be there,
- 8:24Speaker 4: and you're going to be hosting as has been in
- 8:26Speaker 4: the past. You're going to be doing a little Q
- 8:28Speaker 4: and A with some of the folks on stage. Talk
- 8:30Speaker 4: about that.
- 8:31Speaker 6: Yeah, it is. I think that that's the list of
- 8:33Speaker 6: coaches that I just ran down. I know for sure
- 8:36Speaker 6: they're going to be there because they are part of
- 8:37Speaker 6: the program, and it is you look at it, there's
- 8:43Speaker 6: so much new. We're talking about the veteran is Ian Walls,
- 8:46Speaker 6: the swim coach. He's been here for the head coach
- 8:49Speaker 6: for four years, five years, something like that. Most of
- 8:52Speaker 6: the others are there for the first or second time.
- 8:56Speaker 6: So it is an opportunity for all of Herd Nation
- 9:00Speaker 6: to come together in the capital city and get to
- 9:05Speaker 6: know some of these people, many of whom they've never
- 9:07Speaker 6: had a chance to meet before.
- 9:09Speaker 4: Now there are still tickets available, but they're going to
- 9:11Speaker 4: be gone by the time Thursday rolls around. So I
- 9:14Speaker 4: wouldn't plan on showing up at the door and think
- 9:16Speaker 4: you're gonna be able to get in. You need to
- 9:18Speaker 4: get your tickets in advance. The email address for that
- 9:20Speaker 4: is Big Green at Marshall dot edu. Again, it's big
- 9:23Speaker 4: Green at Marshall dot edu. Or you can call three
- 9:26Speaker 4: zero four sixty nine six forty six sixty one. That's
- 9:29Speaker 4: three oh four sixty nine six forty six sixty one.
- 9:32Speaker 4: Information is available various spots on the interweb, including the
- 9:37Speaker 4: Quarterback Club of Charleston, and they have a Facebook page
- 9:41Speaker 4: that's got the information on there. I've also got to
- 9:43Speaker 4: information shared on my social media and Dave Island Radio
- 9:46Speaker 4: over on Facebook, so be sure and check that out.
- 9:48Speaker 4: And the mayor of Charleston, Amy Goodwin, who has one
- 9:52Speaker 4: kid going to WVU and one going to Marshall, so
- 9:54Speaker 4: she's got dual citizenship. She's going to be given the
- 9:56Speaker 4: opening address. It's just a good good time all around.
- 10:00Speaker 4: Our friend Chef Paul is providing the food. You and
- 10:03Speaker 4: I are food Guy's cotton.
- 10:04Speaker 8: You know.
- 10:04Speaker 4: The food is always.
- 10:05Speaker 6: Good, yes, And I am kind of surprised that you
- 10:09Speaker 6: did return from your trip. I was watching your food
- 10:12Speaker 6: experiences the last few days.
- 10:15Speaker 4: You ever been down, I mean you're a traveler. You
- 10:17Speaker 4: ever been down to what they call the Golden Isles
- 10:19Speaker 4: down there around Saint Simon's Jacko Island. Ever been there?
- 10:22Speaker 6: Actually, No, done all the Florida stuff as a resident
- 10:27Speaker 6: of Florida for several years and done a lot of
- 10:30Speaker 6: both of the Carolinas, but no, not the Georgia kind
- 10:33Speaker 6: of thing. Well, that is on my list.
- 10:34Speaker 4: I will say this, if you want to go to
- 10:37Speaker 4: a place it sounds like I'm, you know, part of
- 10:39Speaker 4: their tourism department. But if you want to go to
- 10:41Speaker 4: a place that's non touristy. We didn't stay on the beach, Okay,
- 10:46Speaker 4: our place was about a mile or two away, but
- 10:48Speaker 4: simple jump in the car, you drive to the beach,
- 10:52Speaker 4: free parking, very very clean, locals are great, the food
- 10:56Speaker 4: was great, so I would I'd highly advise. Now, it
- 10:59Speaker 4: takes a while to get there, especially we seem to
- 11:02Speaker 4: encounter every wreck on the eastern shore, you know, on
- 11:05Speaker 4: the way down there. It took a little while to
- 11:06Speaker 4: get there. This kind of a hall if you're driving.
- 11:08Speaker 4: But we had a good time. So if you get
- 11:09Speaker 4: an opportunity, steve good on there and check it out.
- 11:12Speaker 4: Saint Simon's. It's it's an absolutely fantastic place, all right. Again,
- 11:15Speaker 4: Ben To Capitol City Green at the build no flight
- 11:17Speaker 4: school up at the airport. It's Thursday night at six o'clock.
- 11:21Speaker 4: Marshall coaches will be there. I think the cheerleaders are
- 11:24Speaker 4: going to be there. It's just a great night, great food,
- 11:26Speaker 4: great drink, getting ready for what's going to be an
- 11:29Speaker 4: exciting Thundering Herd season. I would be remiss, though. I
- 11:33Speaker 4: want to bring this up real quick before we let
- 11:35Speaker 4: you go. Your heart has got to be broken just
- 11:38Speaker 4: a little bit for Jj Roberts. He was a standout
- 11:41Speaker 4: at cabol middleand high school, all around stud on defense,
- 11:44Speaker 4: had a real chance and was just killing it in
- 11:47Speaker 4: training camp for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Suffered a season
- 11:51Speaker 4: ending injury during a practice scrimmage last week. What a
- 11:55Speaker 4: great I got a chance to meet and hang out
- 11:57Speaker 4: with him last year.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Steve.
- 11:58Speaker 4: What a great, great young man, and I know his
- 12:01Speaker 4: story is not over yet.
- 12:03Speaker 6: His character will not allow this to be any more
- 12:07Speaker 6: than the speed bunt Dave. You mentioned it right there.
- 12:09Speaker 6: He is a top notch human being. He has a
- 12:14Speaker 6: maturity about him that will allow him to instead of
- 12:19Speaker 6: getting all down about this and it's a bummer for
- 12:22Speaker 6: him and everybody else, and he's got to do all
- 12:23Speaker 6: the rehab and everything, but he has a big picture view.
- 12:27Speaker 6: He understands what is important in life. He understands the
- 12:32Speaker 6: overcoming adversity is something we all do and he will
- 12:36Speaker 6: jump into rehab and that kind of thing and come
- 12:38Speaker 6: out on the other side of it even better.
- 12:40Speaker 4: All right, And he was just absolutely killing it. As
- 12:42Speaker 4: a matter of fact, the day of the injury. That morning,
- 12:45Speaker 4: I was reading an article that was done by a
- 12:48Speaker 4: beat writer for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that talked about
- 12:50Speaker 4: what a great story that this young man was. And
- 12:52Speaker 4: then he goes out on that scrimmage on Thursday, season
- 12:55Speaker 4: ending injury. But we certainly wish him the best because,
- 12:58Speaker 4: as we said, his story is not over yet. Hey, Steve,
- 13:00Speaker 4: thanks for taking time at your schedule to be here.
- 13:02Speaker 4: Looking forward to seeing you and hanging out with you
- 13:03Speaker 4: Thursday night as we paint the Capital City green up
- 13:05Speaker 4: at the bill No Flight School at West Virginia International
- 13:08Speaker 4: Yeager Airport. Thanks a lot, buddy, Thank you, You're welcome.

- 16:18Speaker 4: Sports Writers Association in West Virginia's well. Jim Workman of
- 16:21Speaker 4: Wally and Whippies tells me the via text season ending
- 16:24Speaker 4: not confirmed. More info later. And you certainly hope that
- 16:28Speaker 4: is the case, because you always want players from you know,
- 16:31Speaker 4: from our college and from our university's Marshall WVU State.
- 16:34Speaker 4: You see, whatever, we always want them to do well
- 16:38Speaker 4: once they leave to go into the pros. But I
- 16:41Speaker 4: got a special fundus for JJ Roberts because I said,
- 16:44Speaker 4: I got to know him a couple of years ago.
- 16:45Speaker 4: He is a class act, a quality young man, and
- 16:50Speaker 4: uh it was a long shot for him to be
- 16:53Speaker 4: in the NFL to begin with. He was killing it
- 16:56Speaker 4: in the Buccaneers camp. I mean, as I said, I
- 16:58Speaker 4: was reading last week an article from one of the
- 17:00Speaker 4: beat writers that covers the Buccaneers that said this kid
- 17:03Speaker 4: is for real.
- 17:03Speaker 3: And then on.
- 17:04Speaker 4: Thursday, a serious injury. Jim Workman tells me, maybe not.
- 17:09Speaker 4: That was the initial reports that it was season ending.
- 17:12Speaker 4: Maybe not. We certainly hope that is the case. We
- 17:15Speaker 4: will keep you posted Danny Jones coming up a little
- 17:17Speaker 4: bit later on in the show. If you're a listener
- 17:20Speaker 4: to one of our sisters stations, you're in the building
- 17:22Speaker 4: ninety eight seven of the Mouth. And we lost one
- 17:23Speaker 4: of her valuable team members on Fridays, Amy Ryan, opted
- 17:27Speaker 4: to perhaps better herself and get out of radio. I'm
- 17:30Speaker 4: just joking about that. Amy. Amy served us well for
- 17:33Speaker 4: a couple of years, and she'd opted to go do
- 17:35Speaker 4: something else outside of the world of radio, and so
- 17:38Speaker 4: we wish her the best. But we got a slot
- 17:40Speaker 4: to fill on the Mouth and from three to seven,
- 17:43Speaker 4: and why not promote from within because this guy has
- 17:46Speaker 4: been around for a while and he never really went away.
- 17:50Speaker 4: Shockly is his name. He's a Charleston native, of course,
- 17:53Speaker 4: and he's gonna be taken over that three to seven
- 17:54Speaker 4: slot in the Mountain, so we thought we'd welcome into
- 17:56Speaker 4: the studio. He was hanging out with Animal this morning.
- 18:00Speaker 12: How you doing, man, I'm glad to be back, man.
- 18:02Speaker 12: I'm excited about the opportunity. And it's one of those
- 18:06Speaker 12: things where you can do radio for a long time
- 18:09Speaker 12: you think, yeah, yeah, I need to get out of
- 18:11Speaker 12: this for a while. I've been doing it for too long,
- 18:12Speaker 12: and then you it has a way of kind of
- 18:15Speaker 12: pulling you back in. And sometimes it can have a
- 18:17Speaker 12: way of being there for you right when you need
- 18:20Speaker 12: it the most.
- 18:21Speaker 13: And that's kind of the way it's worked out for me.
- 18:23Speaker 4: Well, somebody commented on our social media when we did
- 18:26Speaker 4: a little graphic about you coming back, they said, he
- 18:28Speaker 4: left question mark. Yeah, I mean you were you were
- 18:31Speaker 4: living in DC and you were working there, but you
- 18:33Speaker 4: were but you had, you know, family ties. You know,
- 18:35Speaker 4: you're from this area, so you were back and forth
- 18:37Speaker 4: a lot, and so whenever you were here, you would
- 18:39Speaker 4: hang out with us, would come in the on the
- 18:40Speaker 4: morning show Steve, but you weren't officially here. Yeah, because
- 18:43Speaker 4: you were there. Now you're not there anymore. Now you're here.
- 18:46Speaker 13: Yeah. I didn't move there to do another radio gig.
- 18:49Speaker 13: So that was another important thing.
- 18:50Speaker 12: So I said, I'm not leaving, I'm just going to
- 18:53Speaker 12: be not here as often.
- 18:55Speaker 13: And so now I'm going to be here a lot more.
- 18:56Speaker 4: You were part of the auxiliary that's there. You go,
- 18:59Speaker 4: and you're the resident historian when it comes to music
- 19:03Speaker 4: here in concerts of all varieties. And and I'll tell
- 19:05Speaker 4: you if you are you back on social media again
- 19:07Speaker 4: because I know you're a wife.
- 19:08Speaker 13: Yeah, I started a page back up.
- 19:09Speaker 4: Okay, follow this guy on Facebook because he's always posted.
- 19:12Speaker 4: I mean, you've got an incredible collection of stuff vintage
- 19:17Speaker 4: Charleston when it comes to music. But also and it's
- 19:19Speaker 4: not just rock. I mean you're a rock guy, but
- 19:21Speaker 4: I mean you're posting things about other genres of music
- 19:23Speaker 4: and about what a hotbed over the years, the Charleston,
- 19:27Speaker 4: the Charleston Huntington area has been for music. So make
- 19:31Speaker 4: sure you follow him.
- 19:32Speaker 13: One of my few superpowers.
- 19:33Speaker 4: I think, let's talk about your career in radio though,
- 19:37Speaker 4: I mean, because you've been you've been around. Again, you're
- 19:39Speaker 4: a you're a dunbar guy. Yeah right, but but you've
- 19:41Speaker 4: been around and you worked in different places. Talk about
- 19:44Speaker 4: your career here in the Charleston market.
- 19:45Speaker 12: Well, as far as the career goes it, the candle
- 19:51Speaker 12: was kind of let with super duper Charlie Cooper. When
- 19:53Speaker 12: I was a kid, I was in Greade school listening
- 19:56Speaker 12: to him on W A Z And from listening to him,
- 20:00Speaker 12: I thought, yeah, that would be a great gig. And
- 20:03Speaker 12: then a few years later I was listening to other
- 20:05Speaker 12: local jocks, Joe Kerner JK, the DJ, and it was
- 20:11Speaker 12: finally whenever I was in student council, I was the
- 20:15Speaker 12: secretary of student council, you know, high office stuff at
- 20:18Speaker 12: you yeah, and at Delmar High School when I hired
- 20:22Speaker 12: a guy by the name of Bill Shahan to do
- 20:25Speaker 12: some dances, and from there he kind of remembered my
- 20:28Speaker 12: name and in the summer of nineteen ninety I called
- 20:31Speaker 12: him up and I said, hey, man, you got a
- 20:33Speaker 12: gig for me?
- 20:34Speaker 13: And he said, yeah, I can use you, Bubby, and.
- 20:36Speaker 4: He called everybody Bubby led great Bill Shahan.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Yep.
- 20:38Speaker 13: He hired me on into the newsroom.
- 20:40Speaker 12: So my first gig was actually as a news guy
- 20:44Speaker 12: for WVSR, and that was really cool. We had a
- 20:48Speaker 12: little bit of a new staff there, and then within
- 20:50Speaker 12: a relatively short period of time, an opportunity to just
- 20:54Speaker 12: basically be third wheel on the morning show for mister
- 20:58Speaker 12: Bob Campbell presented itself and I just kind of took
- 21:02Speaker 12: off from there.
- 21:03Speaker 4: And of course you've been around, you know, from the
- 21:05Speaker 4: various various stations here and.
- 21:08Speaker 13: One O two, one O five, qb E.
- 21:11Speaker 12: This is actually my fifth stop on the FM dial
- 21:15Speaker 12: in this market.
- 21:16Speaker 4: Just in just in this market correct.
- 21:18Speaker 13: Yeah, and then most.
- 21:19Speaker 4: People, you know, you think like Steve Animal, Rob Reel,
- 21:22Speaker 4: some of the other poks this company, they had to
- 21:24Speaker 4: go across the country to get fired that many times.
- 21:25Speaker 12: But you just stayed a well, actually I got lucky.
- 21:28Speaker 12: I only got I only got fired one ton.
- 21:30Speaker 13: That was with xerock.
- 21:31Speaker 12: And you know, you go from active rock and you
- 21:34Speaker 12: decide you want to go to right wing talk. It's
- 21:36Speaker 12: like that's quite a transition. Perhaps they didn't really want
- 21:39Speaker 12: us here to begin with. We'll take the hint.
- 21:41Speaker 4: Talking to Larry Shockley. But Dave Island Show in five
- 21:44Speaker 4: Ady Live is brought to you a part by Live
- 21:45Speaker 4: Healthy West Virginia presented by WVU Medicine. It's a podcast
- 21:48Speaker 4: promoting healthier lifestyles in to beyond the state. Check have

- 21:55Speaker 4: So you're gonna be taking over to slot three to seven. Yes,
- 21:58Speaker 4: before and Amy did a great job there, I mean
- 22:01Speaker 4: she did. She's a quality individual, quality broadcaster. Yes, some
- 22:04Speaker 4: of the segments that you do there, we do live
- 22:06Speaker 4: at five. You do back to back live cuts at
- 22:10Speaker 4: five o'clock kind of sending people out out the door
- 22:14Speaker 4: you'll close or getting close to the end of your
- 22:17Speaker 4: shift with the steroid of seven, which you What is
- 22:22Speaker 4: it about the classic rock format that you enjoy so much.
- 22:25Speaker 12: I think that you are getting anytime you get closer
- 22:29Speaker 12: and closer to the root of a genre, regardless of
- 22:33Speaker 12: what kind of music it is, I think that's where
- 22:35Speaker 12: you're getting the most pure, the most the purity of
- 22:41Speaker 12: that form. And so with classic rock, you're getting just
- 22:44Speaker 12: a couple of generations away from the blues, and then
- 22:48Speaker 12: before that you're looking into pre rock and roll. So
- 22:50Speaker 12: I just absolutely love classic rock. It was they were
- 22:53Speaker 12: still well into the seventies, kind of inventing the wheel
- 22:57Speaker 12: in some ways, and everything that's come out after that
- 23:00Speaker 12: it's been highly derivative of something just over the last
- 23:03Speaker 12: twenty years, and so classics always been much more appealing
- 23:07Speaker 12: to me for that reason.
- 23:07Speaker 4: Well, and you know, and we talked about this on
- 23:10Speaker 4: the show in the past. When you use the term
- 23:13Speaker 4: classic rock or retro you referenced Jkvi DJ good friend
- 23:17Speaker 4: of mine, Joe Kerner, who does the Retrofest every year.
- 23:20Speaker 4: People don't want to think about it. They want to think, well,
- 23:22Speaker 4: retro is the nineteen fifties, nineteen sixties for that news
- 23:25Speaker 4: for you, retro is now the early two thousand.
- 23:28Speaker 12: Yeah, that's that's another thing where it's kind of a
- 23:30Speaker 12: moving a sliding scale, because it wasn't too long ago
- 23:35Speaker 12: that I was in my car driving around and something.
- 23:39Speaker 12: I was cerrus XM and there was an oldies channel,
- 23:43Speaker 12: an oldies channel, and they're playing Black Sabbath. I'm like,
- 23:46Speaker 12: I'm not ready for that. Well, oldies to me is Elvis.
- 23:49Speaker 12: Oldies to me is sorry.
- 23:52Speaker 4: It's not Darrel oldies. Oldies now by its true definition,
- 23:56Speaker 4: oldies retro classic is early two thousands. That is correct,
- 24:00Speaker 4: and we mix some of that stuff in because you know,
- 24:03Speaker 4: we have to now on the station. If you haven't
- 24:05Speaker 4: had a chance, by the way, rock station of the Year,
- 24:07Speaker 4: thank you with Broadcaster Association. Yes, if you haven't had
- 24:11Speaker 4: a chance to listen to the station. I mean we
- 24:13Speaker 4: still play the skinnerd and we still play the Eagles,
- 24:16Speaker 4: and we still you mentioned Black Sabbath and Bloyister Cult
- 24:19Speaker 4: and CCR and Clapton and thirty eight Special Ralman Brother
- 24:24Speaker 4: We still play all this stuff. But you know, you
- 24:28Speaker 4: got to include some of the late nineties early too,
- 24:31Speaker 4: So you're going to hear some food fight. Yeah, we're
- 24:32Speaker 4: going to hear some stuff from Nirvana in there too,
- 24:35Speaker 4: That is correct.
- 24:36Speaker 12: But you know, I really like that we kind of
- 24:39Speaker 12: have our little slot and we stay within it within
- 24:42Speaker 12: for the most part. Not to totally hate on anything
- 24:46Speaker 12: it's come out the last twenty years, but I just
- 24:48Speaker 12: I just really think that the the way we're doing
- 24:51Speaker 12: it is the way it should be done in my view.
- 24:53Speaker 4: All right, And so you'll be on Monday through Friday
- 24:56Speaker 4: three to seven. There's also an afternoon I mean a
- 24:58Speaker 4: weekend component in there. When you on the weekend.
- 25:00Speaker 12: Three to seven as well, I think on well, somebody
- 25:04Speaker 12: better tell you.
- 25:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm on there. I'm on their Sunday's noon to seven,

- 29:24Speaker 4: We're on the Injured Reserve there for a little while,

- 29:27Speaker 3: And yeah, I was on the injured.
- 29:30Speaker 4: Can't keep a good man down.
- 29:33Speaker 3: Well this one you almost did. Now I'm okay. Now
- 29:36Speaker 3: it's okay.
- 29:37Speaker 4: Now. Big controversy hit over the last couple of days
- 29:40Speaker 4: and everybody's talking about on social media. Danny got awagh
- 29:44Speaker 4: in on this. Trick or Treating in Kanawh County has
- 29:48Speaker 4: been moved. The little candy beckers are going to be
- 29:51Speaker 4: out Thursday the thirtieth instead of the Halloween night. And
- 29:54Speaker 4: based on the reaction from social media, you would think
- 29:57Speaker 4: the Canawh County Commission was killing kittens or something. Over
- 30:00Speaker 4: run Virginia Street people and the mayor and I talked
- 30:03Speaker 4: about this. The things that people get fired up the
- 30:05Speaker 4: most are Halloween and Christmas parade times. You were mayor
- 30:09Speaker 4: for a long time and again, this is a county
- 30:11Speaker 4: commission thing. But yeah, trick or Treating is going to
- 30:14Speaker 4: be on Thursday night, the thirtieth instead of Friday night
- 30:16Speaker 4: because they don't want to interfere with high school football.
- 30:19Speaker 4: Everybody losing their mind's over. Danny.
- 30:21Speaker 19: Well, I'm for what they're doing. I think it ought
- 30:27Speaker 19: to be on Thursday night.
- 30:28Speaker 4: Well, and I think well, and again, it was all
- 30:30Speaker 4: over I was just reading last night. It was all
- 30:32Speaker 4: over my social media. And I'll talk about a little
- 30:34Speaker 4: bit more a little bit later on. I didn't want
- 30:36Speaker 4: to give you an opportunity there to talk about you
- 30:38Speaker 4: lost a good friend.
- 30:41Speaker 19: Well, he wasn't a good friend. Somebody I knew and
- 30:44Speaker 19: I interviewed. Okay, Jerry Spence. He's a whelming trial lawyer
- 30:52Speaker 19: who wore a buckskin jacket and a black turtleneck and
- 30:56Speaker 19: white hair, and he's the best trial in the country.
- 31:00Speaker 19: Had lost hadn't lost Kate since nineteen sixty nine. And
- 31:05Speaker 19: this is what is going to begin my book. And
- 31:09Speaker 19: then I'm going to tell you what his Maybe I
- 31:14Speaker 19: got this from him. I didn't do it purposely. What
- 31:18Speaker 19: else is there but the truth? The truth is to
- 31:20Speaker 19: be used. The reason we don't get to the bottom
- 31:23Speaker 19: of an issue. People don't tell the truth. That's come
- 31:25Speaker 19: from Danny Jones. Okay, here's Jerry Spence. Tell the truth,
- 31:33Speaker 19: tell it all, tell it the way you know it.
- 31:37Speaker 19: You'd be shocked to how well it work.
- 31:40Speaker 3: He did not believe in putting his.
- 31:42Speaker 19: Own clients on the stand. He believed in making the
- 31:47Speaker 19: government client the government witnesses, his witnesses, and he took
- 31:53Speaker 19: some pretty heat. Had a Melda Marcos, he had Miss.
- 31:59Speaker 3: Wyoming when.
- 32:03Speaker 19: Bob Guccioni did a nasty article about her in Penthouse,
- 32:07Speaker 19: and he said, he said, we all know mister Guccioni
- 32:13Speaker 19: over there. He's the man in the brown velvet pants
- 32:16Speaker 19: like that. Now, he won the case, but then he
- 32:20Speaker 19: lost it on appeal. And every time he did a
- 32:22Speaker 19: case like this, he wrote a book. So in case
- 32:25Speaker 19: he lost it on appeal, he got his money.
- 32:28Speaker 4: So you're telling me that somebody who was here in
- 32:30Speaker 4: this area represented a Melda Marcos and Miss Wyoming in
- 32:36Speaker 4: a case against Bob Guccioni from Penhouse.
- 32:38Speaker 3: No, not from this area. He's from Wyoming.
- 32:40Speaker 4: Okay. I thought there was a tide of this area though,
- 32:42Speaker 4: because I saw people posted about it.
- 32:43Speaker 3: I mean, no. He I interviewed him twice, maybe three times.
- 32:48Speaker 4: Okay, okay, okay, I'm sorry.
- 32:50Speaker 3: And.
- 32:52Speaker 19: I just I worshiped him. I listened to his and
- 32:55Speaker 19: I didn't read his books. I listened to him, okay,
- 32:59Speaker 19: and he was great. And I wrote him a letter
- 33:06Speaker 19: and I didn't get a response before I left the
- 33:08Speaker 19: Mayor's office telling him what a profound effect he had
- 33:12Speaker 19: on my life.
- 33:14Speaker 4: And uh, there are those characters, and you're gonna bring
- 33:17Speaker 4: all these out in your book, I'm sure, which we'll
- 33:19Speaker 4: get to your book here in a little bit. But
- 33:20Speaker 4: there are those characters that even though sometimes, as you
- 33:23Speaker 4: said in your case, Danny, it's just a chance encounter,
- 33:25Speaker 4: couple of interviews here, there truly have an opportunity to
- 33:29Speaker 4: make an impact on your life, more so than what
- 33:31Speaker 4: maybe your family or friends, the people you did with
- 33:33Speaker 4: every day.
- 33:33Speaker 19: And let's keep in mind here, whatever people think about me,
- 33:39Speaker 19: I leaned leaned very slightly to the right. He leaned
- 33:44Speaker 19: pretty far to the left.
- 33:47Speaker 3: But he is a decent guy.
- 33:49Speaker 19: He represented Randy Weaver. You know who Randy Weaver was
- 33:54Speaker 19: of Ruby Ridge fame, and uh, he said out I
- 33:58Speaker 19: paid to represent him. He hated the Fed and you know,
- 34:01Speaker 19: he just he didn't like him. And there's plenty on
- 34:07Speaker 19: c spend. You can watch all those hearings with Jerry Spence.
- 34:12Speaker 3: He was. He was a great man, a.
- 34:14Speaker 4: Great man and obviously a character as well. It's nine
- 34:16Speaker 4: forty one, but Dave Island showing five at Elieve is
- 34:19Speaker 4: a broad shoe part by meex rentles at Leasting, offering
- 34:21Speaker 4: stress free property management with redders and property owners visit
- 34:25Speaker 4: meets rentals dot com. All right, so big news broke
- 34:28Speaker 4: last week. I was on vacation three days last week,
- 34:30Speaker 4: and so I'm, you know, scrolling through social media, and
- 34:33Speaker 4: I see Danny that Danny's Barbecue Stan is getting new life. Yep,
- 34:39Speaker 4: all right, talk about that.
- 34:40Speaker 19: Well, I have a young man who's gonna take it over.
- 34:45Speaker 19: His name is Benjamin Noel Noel and we call him bj.
- 34:51Speaker 19: He has a restaurant in Beckley, and I'm going to
- 34:55Speaker 19: I'm backing him and because I want to see the
- 35:00Speaker 19: place open again.
- 35:01Speaker 4: Yeah, and that's been ever since you you closed it.
- 35:04Speaker 4: And of course we were down there. We did a
- 35:06Speaker 4: live broadcast from there in the closing days. That was
- 35:08Speaker 4: the end of twenty twenty two, twenty to one. Okay,
- 35:12Speaker 4: a couple of years ago. Your your desire was to
- 35:16Speaker 4: find somebody to take it over. And that's why you
- 35:20Speaker 4: kept the decorations, all the nostalgia stuff that you kept
- 35:23Speaker 4: all that there because you wanted somebody Danny to come
- 35:26Speaker 4: in and to take it over and to continue your legacy.
- 35:29Speaker 19: And I still I was working there this morning from.
- 35:36Speaker 3: Let me see from eight.
- 35:42Speaker 4: Until one, Okay, it's eight pm last night to one
- 35:48Speaker 4: this morning, what were you doing in there picking pork, picking.
- 35:54Speaker 19: Pork and freezing it and cleaning and yeah, and doing stuff.
- 36:01Speaker 4: So this guy is going to take it over as
- 36:04Speaker 4: going to keep the same name. It'll be Danny's Danny's Barbecue.
- 36:07Speaker 4: Wouldn't have it any other way, right, And all the
- 36:10Speaker 4: recipes are gonna are going to be your recipes, the
- 36:13Speaker 4: same recipes. I was talking to Shockley about this a
- 36:15Speaker 4: little bit earlier, and uh, I said, you know, one
- 36:18Speaker 4: of the things and I and we ate lunch here,
- 36:21Speaker 4: you know, a couple of times a week here at
- 36:23Speaker 4: the here at eleven eleven. Well, one of the things
- 36:25Speaker 4: I liked about about your food, The barbecue was great,
- 36:29Speaker 4: but to me, the side dishes were just as good.
- 36:31Speaker 4: And when you would do that smoked chicken noodle soup,
- 36:34Speaker 4: that's the good stuff, buddy.
- 36:36Speaker 19: We're trying to figure out whether they have salads or not.
- 36:39Speaker 19: Uh huh, And that's a lot of work, yeah, it is, indeed.
- 36:43Speaker 3: So we're trying to fabout the women like the salads.
- 36:46Speaker 4: Well, some of the guys do too. I like the salads, but.
- 36:54Speaker 3: We're looking forward to it well open September fourth.
- 36:58Speaker 4: And how big a part of this are you going
- 37:01Speaker 4: to be? I mean, I know you said you're backing him,
- 37:03Speaker 4: and you wanted somebody I'll work every day, So you're
- 37:05Speaker 4: going to be in there working every day.
- 37:07Speaker 19: Now, I'm not going to get paid. He's going to
- 37:12Speaker 19: pay me a percent of the gross, of very small
- 37:17Speaker 19: percent of the gross every week to try to pay
- 37:19Speaker 19: me back some of the money that I put into it.
- 37:22Speaker 19: But if he doesn't pay it, he doesn't pay a day.
- 37:24Speaker 19: But I'm not worried about it.
- 37:26Speaker 4: So what was it? I mean, you know that made
- 37:29Speaker 4: you want to do this again?
- 37:31Speaker 19: He came down here and he wanted to buy some
- 37:34Speaker 19: of the equipment. I said, well don't you just let
- 37:37Speaker 19: me give you some equipment right here, right now, and
- 37:44Speaker 19: you can do it. So that's what he wants to do.
- 37:48Speaker 4: And but what what was it in what did he
- 37:51Speaker 4: see in this? You said, he's a restaurant tour from Beckley?
- 37:54Speaker 4: What And we hadn't intended on having him on the
- 37:56Speaker 4: show today, but unfortunately he's working right now. He's trying
- 37:58Speaker 4: to get ready, which you completely uner and we'll have
- 38:00Speaker 4: him on at a future time. What did he see
- 38:02Speaker 4: in this place that made him say I want to
- 38:05Speaker 4: take this over.
- 38:07Speaker 3: I don't know how else to say this.
- 38:09Speaker 19: He's a fan, you know, he's he's a He's a
- 38:13Speaker 19: guy that likes me, and he likes what I do,
- 38:16Speaker 19: and he likes the food I sell and he wants
- 38:20Speaker 19: to do it himself.
- 38:23Speaker 4: Well, it's I mean, it's I cannot tell you the
- 38:26Speaker 4: number of people that I run into Danny on a
- 38:28Speaker 4: regular basis that talk about how much they missed that
- 38:31Speaker 4: little place. And that's just one of the restaurants that
- 38:33Speaker 4: you you that you owned and ran, but that was
- 38:36Speaker 4: that was the last one, eight total. And people still
- 38:40Speaker 4: talk about they still talk about your rib place. They
- 38:43Speaker 4: still talk about the times that you, you know, we're working
- 38:46Speaker 4: for other people, you know, the different places, the Sterling, whatever,
- 38:49Speaker 4: wherever it was that you worked. I mean, you you
- 38:52Speaker 4: got quite a quite a legacy here in Charleston, and
- 38:55Speaker 4: I don't I don't think you're done yet.
- 38:57Speaker 3: I like to Sterling today.
- 39:00Speaker 4: What was it about the Sterling that made it so?
- 39:02Speaker 19: I was young seventeen and I was the main cook.
- 39:08Speaker 19: I had the salad guy here, I had the broiler
- 39:11Speaker 19: guy here, and the salad guy had he was the
- 39:14Speaker 19: main cook, but he said get over there, and I
- 39:20Speaker 19: became the main cook. And I sit there with a
- 39:24Speaker 19: cigarette hanging out of my mouth the.
- 39:26Speaker 4: Way it was done back then.
- 39:28Speaker 3: Yeah, it was done.
- 39:29Speaker 4: And maybe a drink in your hand too.
- 39:32Speaker 19: Saturday night we would drink from three o'clock. There was
- 39:38Speaker 19: four of us, and we would drink a bottle of whiskey,
- 39:41Speaker 19: and then we'd go down to Court Street and buy
- 39:45Speaker 19: another bottle of whiskey, a six dollars bottle of whiskey
- 39:48Speaker 19: for ten dollars, and we'd drink it, and I'd get
- 39:51Speaker 19: real hungry.
- 39:51Speaker 3: I'd come back to the rest and eat. And I
- 39:56Speaker 3: loved it.
- 39:57Speaker 19: And I worked nine at night till six in the morning,
- 40:01Speaker 19: and it was it was heaven.
- 40:03Speaker 3: I love it.
- 40:04Speaker 4: How's the book coming?
- 40:06Speaker 3: Well? You had an effect on that. Okay, you don't
- 40:09Speaker 3: even know it.
- 40:10Speaker 4: Okay, good or bad?
- 40:12Speaker 3: Well, I think a good effect.
- 40:14Speaker 4: Okay, talk about it.
- 40:16Speaker 19: You said to me, are you gonna put recipes in
- 40:19Speaker 19: the book? And I said that'll be the next edition.
- 40:25Speaker 19: And I called Charlie, Charlie Brown, and I said, Charlie,
- 40:30Speaker 19: we gotta wind this thing up. I'm seventy five, he's
- 40:35Speaker 19: eighty five.
- 40:36Speaker 3: We got to wind it up.
- 40:37Speaker 19: We'll do another edition, which we're not. But that's that's
- 40:43Speaker 19: how you wound it up.
- 40:44Speaker 3: You did it.
- 40:45Speaker 4: Oh, it's all your fault. Okay, of course everything's all
- 40:48Speaker 4: it's my fault.
- 40:48Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 40:49Speaker 4: Talking to for for Charles the Mayor, Danny Jones, all right,
- 40:52Speaker 4: I'm gonna.
- 40:53Speaker 3: There's gonna be some good stories.
- 40:55Speaker 4: I can't wait. I can't Are you gonna do an
- 40:57Speaker 4: audio version? Two?
- 40:59Speaker 19: Well, I I talked to Dan that works over at
- 41:04Speaker 19: the newspaper. He does audio for people, and I asked
- 41:11Speaker 19: him about it. He says, if I can't do it,
- 41:14Speaker 19: but what I'd like to do is get the voices
- 41:16Speaker 19: of the different people. For instance, a guy that I
- 41:21Speaker 19: worked with in the UH in the filling station, n
- 41:26Speaker 19: Ined Kurt Vorhees. He's in Huntington, Richard Butler. You'd never
- 41:31Speaker 19: heard of me. If it hadn't been for Richard Butler,
- 41:34Speaker 19: nobody would have. And to get him to narrate his
- 41:37Speaker 19: part and me to narrate my part, and some of
- 41:41Speaker 19: my parts are pretty saucy.
- 41:46Speaker 4: So nope, no pun intended. We'll get back to the
- 41:49Speaker 4: book in the restaurant a little bit. Later on, I do,
- 41:52Speaker 4: because I already had text about this this morning. I
- 41:54Speaker 4: do want to get your opinion on this.
- 41:57Speaker 16: Uh.
- 41:57Speaker 4: It was announced over the weekend the governor that West Virginia,
- 42:02Speaker 4: along with I think it was Ohio and South Carolina,
- 42:04Speaker 4: are going to be spending sending National Guard troops into
- 42:08Speaker 4: the nation's capital to help with the crime situation there.
- 42:12Speaker 4: Crime is down in d C, but no one ever
- 42:15Speaker 4: wants to let you know the numbers interfere with stories.
- 42:19Speaker 19: A crime is unique to the victim, right, and they
- 42:22Speaker 19: have crime in d C and they need help, but
- 42:26Speaker 19: not from us.
- 42:27Speaker 4: They're sending in the National Guard. And I saw I
- 42:31Speaker 4: read a lot back and forth over this on the weekend.
- 42:33Speaker 4: People said, well, why is West Virginia going there? And
- 42:35Speaker 4: somebody rightfully so said, well, you know, it doesn't stop
- 42:39Speaker 4: at the borders. If there's we send National Guard people
- 42:42Speaker 4: to help with disasters in different states. I completely understand.
- 42:45Speaker 4: I completely understand that, But go ahead.
- 42:47Speaker 3: That is different to.
- 42:52Speaker 19: Involve ourselves in everyday criminal activity that goes on in
- 42:56Speaker 19: a district of Columbia.
- 42:58Speaker 3: What if one gets.
- 43:01Speaker 4: Well and they're unarmed from what I understand, and they're
- 43:04Speaker 4: going to be doing a lot of the jobs to
- 43:07Speaker 4: free up a lot of a law enforcement so they're
- 43:10Speaker 4: not necessarily going to be standing there with with with
- 43:12Speaker 4: guns in hand, you know, trying to keep people from
- 43:15Speaker 4: from the middle crimes. Uh, they're they're unarmed.
- 43:18Speaker 19: I mean when when I remove the barrels from under
- 43:26Speaker 19: the buildings, the wooden buildings that people used to go
- 43:30Speaker 19: sit in, uh in Vietnam, and you take them out
- 43:35Speaker 19: to the elephant grass and you set them on fire.
- 43:37Speaker 19: Do you know what I'm talking about? And Uh, I
- 43:41Speaker 19: was unarmed, right, I had let me read a text
- 43:47Speaker 19: for you.
- 43:47Speaker 16: Good.
- 43:47Speaker 3: Does anybody know what I'm talking about?
- 43:49Speaker 4: I got an idea. Text says I think it's a
- 43:52Speaker 4: disgrace that our governors put in our National Guard in
- 43:54Speaker 4: the middle of DC and federal government disputes. When people
- 43:57Speaker 4: in the flooded areas need help before winter comes, they
- 43:59Speaker 4: can't get help from the state. It's ridiculous, says a texture.
- 44:02Speaker 19: I think the National Guard's mission has changed. It's just
- 44:07Speaker 19: and putting the Marines in DC are in Los Angeles,
- 44:15Speaker 19: you know, I know where they train, you know where
- 44:17Speaker 19: they train, Steal Beach, my town. I'll be there over
- 44:23Speaker 19: Memorial Day weekend.
- 44:25Speaker 3: Labor.
- 44:27Speaker 19: That's my city, Steal Beach, that's where they have a
- 44:30Speaker 19: Navy installation there, and that's where the Marines were training.
- 44:34Speaker 4: So overall, and we'll do this and good break. You're
- 44:36Speaker 4: not a fan of what the governor announced over the weekend, you.
- 44:39Speaker 3: Know what, I'm not going to sit here and criticize him.
- 44:42Speaker 19: I don't know what he knows. I don't like it,
- 44:45Speaker 19: but I'm not gonna. I mean, I'm not gonna wear out.
- 44:51Speaker 19: It's not a bridge I want to burn, right, I
- 44:53Speaker 19: got it.
- 44:53Speaker 3: I got it. If there's one I want to burn,
- 44:56Speaker 3: I'll come on here.
- 44:57Speaker 4: And burn it.
- 44:59Speaker 6: Burn.
- 45:01Speaker 3: I don't get it. I just don't get it.
