- 0:00Speaker 1: Speaking to guys like, I bet if you shook his
- 0:02Speaker 1: hand would break a knuckle. Probably it's Jeff lay Wald
- 0:08Speaker 1: ESPN dot com and joined us on the ramas. You
- 0:10Speaker 1: know what it is, Jeff youse. Don't you like if
- 0:13Speaker 1: you wanted to throw some hands, you could do some damage?
- 0:15Speaker 2: Yeah? Look at those.
- 0:16Speaker 1: You do some damage with those, couldn't sh I'm an artist.
- 0:21Speaker 2: It's the gene pool. His old man had railroad hands. Yeah,
- 0:24Speaker 2: Jeff got the railroad hands.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Jeff.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Another week, another game for the Broncos in which they won.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Am I allowed to be critical after they've won seventh
- 0:37Speaker 1: straight about the offense?
- 0:39Speaker 2: Is that allowed?
- 0:41Speaker 3: Well? I always I always say that, uh uh.
- 0:45Speaker 4: Many coaches have told me through the years they feel
- 0:49Speaker 4: like they're in a good spot if you're grading the
- 0:51Speaker 4: quality of victory.
- 0:52Speaker 3: So I think that's uh. I think that's what we're doing.
- 0:56Speaker 4: And you know, the last time the Broncos did something big,
- 1:01Speaker 4: like when the Super Bowl, I can recall we graded
- 1:05Speaker 4: victories a lot of those weeks the same way we
- 1:08Speaker 4: are now. I dug this out the other day because
- 1:12Speaker 4: I keep thinking about it. But they were in twelve
- 1:15Speaker 4: one score games that season. I think we always forget.
- 1:19Speaker 4: You know, when we look back on things. You know,
- 1:22Speaker 4: when you look back, everything is always sort of awesome
- 1:25Speaker 4: in a lot of ways.
- 1:26Speaker 3: But they were nine and three in one score games
- 1:29Speaker 3: that year.
- 1:30Speaker 4: So I think this is just who this team is
- 1:35Speaker 4: until you know, something happens differently on offense. But it
- 1:41Speaker 4: ain't pretty, and I don't think, you know, they have
- 1:44Speaker 4: to apologize for it. But you know, always the question
- 1:47Speaker 4: is can you get all the way to the finish
- 1:50Speaker 4: line if it ain't pretty? And that's that's kind of
- 1:53Speaker 4: where we're at.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Jeff, You've done this a long time, You've talked to
- 1:58Speaker 2: thousands of bays and coaches. How would you characterize what's
- 2:05Speaker 2: now being said by the Broncos head coach and by
- 2:08Speaker 2: the quarterback.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Typical?
- 2:12Speaker 4: I think, you know, I don't think anybody's happy on
- 2:16Speaker 4: the offensive side of the ball. You have a coach
- 2:19Speaker 4: here and who you know, he made his resume on,
- 2:27Speaker 4: you know, having an offense that that set records, you know,
- 2:31Speaker 4: five thousand yard passing seasons multiple times for his quarterback
- 2:37Speaker 4: and Drew Brees, uh, you know, division title after division title. Yeah,
- 2:43Speaker 4: it wasn't the strongest division in the league for sure,
- 2:46Speaker 4: and they played indoor ball a lot of the time.
- 2:50Speaker 4: But his you know, sort of history in the NFL
- 2:55Speaker 4: is being one of the best or considered one of
- 2:58Speaker 4: the best play callers and productive offense. So this is
- 3:03Speaker 4: driving him nuts. And I think you're seeing a little
- 3:07Speaker 4: of that publicly. And I think this is Bo's, you know,
- 3:11Speaker 4: first real wrestling match with what it is to play
- 3:14Speaker 4: quarterback in this town. And I always quote the late,
- 3:20Speaker 4: late great Mike Heimerdinger. You know, I knew Dinger for
- 3:23Speaker 4: a long time, and uh Dgger called plays in New
- 3:29Speaker 4: York for the Jets and was on Mike Shanahan's staff
- 3:32Speaker 4: here for the Super Bowl wins. And Dinger always said,
- 3:36Speaker 4: without hesitation, this was a much tougher town to be
- 3:41Speaker 4: the quarterback in than New York. And I've always said that,
- 3:46Speaker 4: I've always believed that. I asked John Elway one time, John,
- 3:50Speaker 4: what was tougher doing the job or having the job?
- 3:54Speaker 4: And he didn't even hesitate, and he said having the job.
- 3:58Speaker 4: And this is where Bow is that he's learning what
- 4:03Speaker 4: Peyton Manning knew, what John Elway knew, what Craig Morton knew,
- 4:07Speaker 4: what Jake Plumber knows. It's tough to be the quarterback
- 4:12Speaker 4: in this town because there aren't many places to hide,
- 4:16Speaker 4: and there's almost no one who isn't interested in what
- 4:19Speaker 4: you're doing.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Leggy, we have a I do this to you occasionally
- 4:24Speaker 1: where I say I got a theory and then you
- 4:26Speaker 1: either back up my theory or you tear it down.
- 4:28Speaker 1: But in this case, it's we have a theory, and
- 4:31Speaker 1: feel free to use this as a quote in one
- 4:32Speaker 1: of your articles and quote me.
- 4:33Speaker 3: On, Oh let me get my pens. Okay.
- 4:37Speaker 1: We have dubbed a term on this show for bon
- 4:40Speaker 1: Nicks and Sean Payton, which is sack Hoolm syndrome, which
- 4:44Speaker 1: Bonnicks has such happy feet, and maybe is a part
- 4:48Speaker 1: of that because Sean Payton, who hates quarterbacks who take sacks,
- 4:52Speaker 1: tells him over and over, can't take a sack, can't
- 4:54Speaker 1: take it back, You can't do it. Is that messing
- 4:57Speaker 1: with the clock in his head?
- 4:59Speaker 4: There's probably some of that too. I mean, there's probably
- 5:01Speaker 4: some of that in there, you know.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Whatever.
- 5:06Speaker 4: Whatever the play callers chief beef is, the quarterbacks play
- 5:11Speaker 4: is gonna reflect that if a guy keeps pounding somebody
- 5:15Speaker 4: about interceptions, the quarterback isn't gonna take any chances he's
- 5:19Speaker 4: not gonna throw a tight window throw. And I think
- 5:23Speaker 4: that's always the line you have to walk, and when
- 5:26Speaker 4: you're developing a young quarterback, because you don't want to
- 5:28Speaker 4: strip all of the instinct away.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Trying to avoid the bad things.
- 5:36Speaker 4: I mean, I think sometimes you just have to accept
- 5:39Speaker 4: some bad things are gonna happen in a game. They're
- 5:41Speaker 4: an awful lot of really good players out there. You know,
- 5:46Speaker 4: patser Tan is gonna intercept somebody's past no matter how
- 5:50Speaker 4: good you are.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Throwing it at some point. So I think there is
- 5:54Speaker 3: some of that.
- 5:55Speaker 4: I think the chief directive has been don't take I mean,
- 6:00Speaker 4: Peyton has gone to far as far as to say
- 6:03Speaker 4: he considers them almost like turnovers given the impact on
- 6:08Speaker 4: a drive, and the statistics in some ways probably bear
- 6:13Speaker 4: that out. You know, turnovers are always the worst, but
- 6:17Speaker 4: I think the math does show when you have sacks,
- 6:21Speaker 4: especially deep sacks twelve fourteen yards, those are drive Those
- 6:26Speaker 4: are drive enders in a lot of cases. And the
- 6:30Speaker 4: Broncos defense is proof of that. How many drives have
- 6:33Speaker 4: they ended this season simply because they keep sacking people?
- 6:38Speaker 3: Yep?
- 6:38Speaker 2: But some teams, Jeff, are able to overcome that. I mean,
- 6:41Speaker 2: Drake miss No, Drake Me's the most sacked quarterback in
- 6:43Speaker 2: the league. He's taken some major tail.
- 6:45Speaker 4: He's also one of the most accurate most you look
- 6:48Speaker 4: at his accuracy numbers through the intermediate and deep part
- 6:52Speaker 4: of the field. He's one of the most accurate throwers
- 6:55Speaker 4: in the league right now and beyond ten yards. Bo
- 6:58Speaker 4: Nicks is one of the least accurate throwers in the
- 7:01Speaker 4: league right now.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Why did that change? Bon Nick's last year? Like we
- 7:06Speaker 1: all knew he had happy feet, he had some bad footwork,
- 7:08Speaker 1: but he's six completion percentage points less than last season.
- 7:12Speaker 4: Well, I would say his footwork is six completion points
- 7:17Speaker 4: worse than it.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Was last year.
- 7:18Speaker 4: His footwork, as I've reviewed it and gone over it,
- 7:23Speaker 4: and I've looked at every game at least three times. Again,
- 7:28Speaker 4: his footwork isn't quite where it was even last year.
- 7:31Speaker 4: And I think that's the root of it all, and
- 7:35Speaker 4: that's on everybody involved. But some of that is if
- 7:40Speaker 4: you're not if the offense doesn't have sort of the rhythm,
- 7:46Speaker 4: and I don't think they have a rhythm now. They
- 7:48Speaker 4: got tons of guys going on and off the field.
- 7:51Speaker 4: They don't hit the line of scrimmage at the same
- 7:53Speaker 4: time on the play clock. Almost even on consecutive plays,
- 7:59Speaker 4: they don't have the drum beat the good offenses have.
- 8:05Speaker 3: And that's not bo Nix's fault. He's in there.
- 8:09Speaker 4: He bears some responsibility, but that part isn't on him.
- 8:13Speaker 4: And I think I think Bow is taking a lot
- 8:18Speaker 4: of the public criticism when some of the stuff is
- 8:21Speaker 4: out of his control and it's all involved. And Sean Payton,
- 8:25Speaker 4: to his credit, did say that yesterday. He said definitively,
- 8:30Speaker 4: this isn't Bow. And you know, I think that showed
- 8:34Speaker 4: a little bit to me that he is at least
- 8:37Speaker 4: stepping in front of some of the you know, stuff
- 8:41Speaker 4: being thrown at his quarterback.
- 8:42Speaker 3: You know, he needs to do it more.
- 8:45Speaker 4: I think Bo's footwork and play will improve if he
- 8:48Speaker 4: thinks he's getting a little backing from the top.
- 8:52Speaker 2: You know. I look at it though, Jeff, excuse me,
- 8:55Speaker 2: and I said to myself, he didn't take sex before,
- 8:59Speaker 2: so you know, he was never a quote sack taker,
- 9:02Speaker 2: So why do you need to pound it into his head?
- 9:04Speaker 2: Number one? It'd be like this. It'd be like if
- 9:07Speaker 2: my dad said to me and hey, man, uh, don't
- 9:10Speaker 2: shoot heroin don't shoot heroin. Don't shoot heroin. Don't shoot heroin. Well, Dad,
- 9:13Speaker 2: I don't. I don't, Okay, I won't. I mean I
- 9:15Speaker 2: don't want to, but I don't. Anyway, you know, it's
- 9:17Speaker 2: like it's like I don't know. I just there's got
- 9:21Speaker 2: there's gotta be there's gotta be some sort of happy
- 9:24Speaker 2: medium in there where everybody everybody's chilling. Okay, man, we're cool.
- 9:29Speaker 2: That's got to be in there somewhere because we've seen it.
- 9:32Speaker 4: I love how you picked like the most drastic drug
- 9:37Speaker 4: on the planet, right, you can't pick.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Like something you know, like dots right right right right
- 9:43Speaker 3: to the jug. Yeah, well, like.
- 9:48Speaker 2: We slam donuts on the show. Well, you know, I.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Think there is some of that motion.
- 9:54Speaker 4: I think everyone, I think everyone on the offensive side
- 9:59Speaker 4: of the ball is gripping the bat way too tight.
- 10:01Speaker 4: In a baseball analogy, because look at how the defense plays.
- 10:07Speaker 4: They play free, they play athletic, they play fast. I
- 10:12Speaker 4: mean they are just swarming everything. And you can't play
- 10:17Speaker 4: that way if there isn't a comfort level in playing
- 10:21Speaker 4: alongside each other and the scheme you're in that the
- 10:26Speaker 4: defense has all of that working. You want to look
- 10:30Speaker 4: at team chemistry. Watch the Broncos defense play. They have
- 10:35Speaker 4: four pass rushers that are the least selfish pass rushers
- 10:40Speaker 4: in the NFL, and they have all four of them
- 10:42Speaker 4: right next to each other, and they're one two in
- 10:47Speaker 4: quarterback hits. Zach Allen, Nick Benito. I've never seen that
- 10:51Speaker 4: in my career. I don't think since like Reggie White days,
- 10:55Speaker 4: and they didn't even track that stuff too much back then.
- 11:01Speaker 3: But they have the guy. I mean, it's unselfish, it's chemistry.
- 11:05Speaker 4: They don't have that look on offense because everybody is
- 11:10Speaker 4: just grinding the gears and you know, I, you know, nobody,
- 11:16Speaker 4: they don't care what I think here.
- 11:18Speaker 3: I get it.
- 11:19Speaker 4: But I mean I certainly would go the route of
- 11:22Speaker 4: these are my twelve favorite plays, and we're gonna run
- 11:26Speaker 4: knees over and over again until they absolutely, you know,
- 11:32Speaker 4: make them punt six times in a row. I would
- 11:36Speaker 4: trim a lot down and sort of play the all
- 11:39Speaker 4: star team of the playbook for a little while.
- 11:43Speaker 2: A right, Kansas City's in town. Mahomes is still a witch.
- 11:46Speaker 2: We know that look that the Chiefs. I think people
- 11:49Speaker 2: overlook the fact that the Chiefs defense is also pretty
- 11:51Speaker 2: dang good. You know in their offense, say what you will.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Their offense still pretty dang good and they can spread
- 11:58Speaker 2: it all around. When you look at this game, what
- 12:01Speaker 2: do you see, Jeff? And we think the Broncos can win.
- 12:03Speaker 2: But man, you have a real opportunity here to put
- 12:06Speaker 2: the Chiefs in bay and say you are not winning
- 12:08Speaker 2: the division period, end of story.
- 12:11Speaker 3: Is it not hilarious?
- 12:12Speaker 4: And look, I'm in this group of people, but I
- 12:16Speaker 4: think it's hilarious. The Chiefs wouldn't make the playoffs right now,
- 12:20Speaker 4: just by the way the AFC is and there's still
- 12:23Speaker 4: the Super Bowl favorites in some places. I think that's
- 12:27Speaker 4: really a testament to what people think of Mahomes especially
- 12:32Speaker 4: and Andy Reid. Look that they're coming off a bye
- 12:35Speaker 4: and Andy Reid is you want to talk, that's as
- 12:37Speaker 4: close to a sure thing over the years as anything
- 12:41Speaker 4: in the NFL.
- 12:42Speaker 3: And Andy Reid team coming off.
- 12:43Speaker 4: Of bye, but their defense has really been the will
- 12:50Speaker 4: be the quirk for the Broncos. I mean, I think
- 12:52Speaker 4: Justin Herbert in the opener, so you can't really count
- 12:57Speaker 4: the opener is the only quarterback to really move the
- 13:02Speaker 4: ball consistently against this defense. I think he's the only
- 13:05Speaker 4: three hundred yard game they've surrendered. You know, I don't
- 13:10Speaker 4: think the Raiders had one hundred yards in the game.
- 13:14Speaker 4: They play maybe one twenty or something like that. But
- 13:18Speaker 4: they're really good on defense. They don't have quite the
- 13:20Speaker 4: personnel they did last year, but they schematically they don't
- 13:25Speaker 4: give you the same look very often on the on
- 13:28Speaker 4: the same drive, and that's been an issue for Bonnicks,
- 13:33Speaker 4: like it would be for any second year quarterback to
- 13:36Speaker 4: get that much variety, especially simulated pressures. The Broncos may
- 13:42Speaker 4: be the only team better at simulated pressure right now
- 13:45Speaker 4: than the Chiefs are.
- 13:47Speaker 1: So reminder to the listeners that your keyword for this
- 13:50Speaker 1: hour is Gulay. So text that your first last name
- 13:54Speaker 1: to three zero three five four h nine two five.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Got a chance to win a pair of tickets to
- 13:57Speaker 1: the Nuggets in the Bulls on the seventeenth. Jeff is
- 14:00Speaker 1: with us just rapid fire here on a few of
- 14:02Speaker 1: these LEGGI went back and looked over the last two
- 14:05Speaker 1: years when Broncos opponents scored twenty points or more. The
- 14:09Speaker 1: Broncos are three and eight in those games. One of
- 14:12Speaker 1: them was the Dallas game earlier this year, with a
- 14:14Speaker 1: garbage touchdown from the Cowboys at the end that didn't matter.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Another was the Browns game from last year where you
- 14:19Speaker 1: had two defensive touchdowns. The Chiefs scored twenty or more
- 14:23Speaker 1: points in each of their games this season except for one.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Is that a bigger stat then the Chiefs being one
- 14:31Speaker 1: in four in one possession games this year?
- 14:35Speaker 3: They're both probably, you know, very telling.
- 14:38Speaker 4: I mean, obviously points are ultimately the decision on everything,
- 14:44Speaker 4: So those are big. Those are big stats. But that's
- 14:47Speaker 4: a sign of a team that's been around and done things.
- 14:52Speaker 4: You gotta keep them on the canvas in a game
- 14:56Speaker 4: when you get them down. Now, the Broncos have shown
- 14:58Speaker 4: that this year. I mean, all we keep talking about
- 15:01Speaker 4: bow Nicks. No quarterback in the league has more comeback
- 15:03Speaker 4: wins this year than bow Knicks does. And you know,
- 15:06Speaker 4: the Broncos are the only team with four fourth quarter wins, yeah,
- 15:12Speaker 4: this year. So the Broncos have shown that mentality. But
- 15:16Speaker 4: the Chiefs have lived it for basically Patrick Mahomes's career.
- 15:22Speaker 4: If they're in a one score game or even a
- 15:24Speaker 4: two score game, they're not out of it ever.
- 15:27Speaker 1: And then finally last two real quick, no JK. Dobbins,
- 15:30Speaker 1: it looks like this week. How big of an impact
- 15:32Speaker 1: is that.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I still.
- 15:37Speaker 4: I think that may be multiple weeks, but I think
- 15:40Speaker 4: they're all all involved. They're still trying to get as
- 15:42Speaker 4: much information as possible as to what the recovery of
- 15:46Speaker 4: this will be. And with the bye week, you know,
- 15:49Speaker 4: the bye week kind of affects the math. But it's
- 15:52Speaker 4: a big deal. I mean, he's one of the best
- 15:54Speaker 4: per carry running backs in the in the league right now,
- 15:58Speaker 4: and when the offense has moved this season, you can
- 16:02Speaker 4: usually trace it back to JK. Dobbins getting some drives
- 16:06Speaker 4: going with some first and second down carries. So I
- 16:10Speaker 4: think he has been the one thing that has consistently
- 16:14Speaker 4: been a good thing. They don't use him enough in
- 16:17Speaker 4: my opinion, but that is an enormous issue.
- 16:20Speaker 1: And then finally, Legy, you are a historian of all sport.
- 16:25Speaker 1: You like all the sports. I just have a comparison
- 16:29Speaker 1: to be made here and I need your help watching
- 16:32Speaker 1: Nicola Jokic do something ungodly, which is like just not
- 16:36Speaker 1: miss a shot. You know, he's eighteen of twenty three
- 16:39Speaker 1: last night for fifty five points, and most made the
- 16:41Speaker 1: comparison that it's like he's almost like Barry Bonds when
- 16:44Speaker 1: he was at his peak, where you're walking in with
- 16:46Speaker 1: the bases loaded, just because you know the damage he
- 16:48Speaker 1: can do. But as far as efficiency, who would you
- 16:51Speaker 1: say is the most efficient football player you've ever seen?
- 16:57Speaker 3: Probably Brady at his best.
- 16:59Speaker 4: Yeah that yeah, I just think you know, now, you
- 17:03Speaker 4: know that kind of efficiency is is the rarest of
- 17:06Speaker 4: the rare. But and uh, you know, I didn't see
- 17:10Speaker 4: him too much live live, but I've watched a lot
- 17:14Speaker 4: of game film, and uh, you know, I think when
- 17:20Speaker 4: you look at a player like Otto Graham way back,
- 17:25Speaker 4: that was that was he was like the first quarterback
- 17:27Speaker 4: who brought efficiency into the world. Uh, you know, before that,
- 17:32Speaker 4: it was just gunslinger time. You know, guys would be
- 17:35Speaker 4: fifty percent completion, a couple of big plays.
- 17:39Speaker 3: I think I think Brady's the closest to me.
- 17:42Speaker 4: At his peak, it just felt like you didn't miss
- 17:46Speaker 4: uh very often in the in the big time. But guys,
- 17:50Speaker 4: the best basketball player on the planet, and uh, it's
- 17:54Speaker 4: unfortunate a lot of MVP voters don't see him when
- 17:56Speaker 4: he tips off at nine or whatever.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Yeah, eleven fifteen on these can give me.
- 18:02Speaker 4: Yeah, it's not a mistake. People the alert that the
- 18:07Speaker 4: Nuggets Kings game is tipping off at nine.
