- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Wired to hunts rut Fresh Radio, bringing you
- 0:05Speaker 1: the latest reports from the White tailed Woods and now
- 0:08Speaker 1: your host, Spencer new Hearth. This is episode four hundred
- 0:16Speaker 1: and eighty four of Wired Hunts rout Fresh Radio powered
- 0:19Speaker 1: by First Light, and this week we're talking about avoiding
- 0:22Speaker 1: the Orange Armies. Welcome to Wired hunts rut Fresh Radio.
- 0:39Speaker 1: This is episode four eight four And Uh, I'm not
- 0:44Speaker 1: joined by Mark Kenyon today because he's out on assignment,
- 0:47Speaker 1: doesn't have any sell service. I can't get a text
- 0:49Speaker 1: or phone call through to him, so I'm joined by
- 0:52Speaker 1: Tony Peterson instead. And Tony, today, I want to talk
- 0:56Speaker 1: to you about bow hunting during on seasons. Mid November
- 1:01Speaker 1: probably represents a time um when there are a maximum
- 1:04Speaker 1: amount of gun seasons for white tails open across the country.
- 1:08Speaker 1: So it's relevant now more than ever. And uh, the
- 1:11Speaker 1: reason I'm asking you this question, Tony, is because when
- 1:14Speaker 1: is the last time you killed a white tail with
- 1:17Speaker 1: a gun? Oh? Man? Uh, I guess probably about three
- 1:22Speaker 1: years ago. Three or four years ago. I used to
- 1:25Speaker 1: I used to muzzleloader hunt really hard, and I've kind
- 1:29Speaker 1: of gotten out of it. We just by losing a
- 1:31Speaker 1: few spots to hunt and just having different priorities. But
- 1:34Speaker 1: it's been a few years anyway. Yeah, so you are
- 1:37Speaker 1: a white tail killing son of a gun with a
- 1:41Speaker 1: bow instead. That's why I want to hear your input
- 1:45Speaker 1: on this. So, when the Orange Armies are in the
- 1:47Speaker 1: woods in the Midwest and you are still looking for
- 1:51Speaker 1: your own white tail with a bow, what are some
- 1:54Speaker 1: themes Tony, Like, how are you finding deer this time
- 1:58Speaker 1: of year? Say, gun seasons have been open or a
- 2:00Speaker 1: week by now, um, and you're entering the woods to
- 2:03Speaker 1: try to kill one with archery equipment? How are you
- 2:06Speaker 1: finding deer? And like, what are some differences you're noticing
- 2:09Speaker 1: than in areas that don't have gun seasons open right now?
- 2:13Speaker 1: You know, I really I think we kind of look
- 2:16Speaker 1: at where the deer go during gun seasons as we
- 2:21Speaker 1: think of it too big. Sometimes we think like, oh,
- 2:24Speaker 1: they move on to some property that doesn't allow hunting
- 2:27Speaker 1: or some kind of sanctuary. But you know, I see
- 2:31Speaker 1: this a lot where I'm pheasant hunting or I'm scouting
- 2:34Speaker 1: this time of year, and I jumped deer in places
- 2:37Speaker 1: on especially on public land, a lot where they're just
- 2:40Speaker 1: in really tight cover and they don't want to move,
- 2:43Speaker 1: and so I think we always think that they're just gone,
- 2:45Speaker 1: But really you got to think of it from the
- 2:46Speaker 1: perspective of you know, how many deer could you hide
- 2:49Speaker 1: in half an acre of cat tails. You might think
- 2:53Speaker 1: like there's gonna be zero deer in there, but when
- 2:55Speaker 1: you go walk through them this time of year, those
- 2:57Speaker 1: deer know every one of those spots are kind of
- 3:01Speaker 1: unapproachable for us, like they're gonna know we're there. And
- 3:05Speaker 1: I see this over and over and over this time
- 3:07Speaker 1: of year where I always like in my head, I'm like, oh,
- 3:09Speaker 1: they're there. There's someplace big and far, and what they
- 3:14Speaker 1: are is underfoot in you know, a nice little island
- 3:17Speaker 1: in the swamp, or they're somewhere where just we're just
- 3:19Speaker 1: not looking, and it's usually a really tiny patch of
- 3:23Speaker 1: cover that hides them really well. So say it's November
- 3:27Speaker 1: and you're entering a new area and you have like
- 3:30Speaker 1: one day to scout before you're gonna be hunting for
- 3:32Speaker 1: a week. What are some things you're looking for. Are
- 3:35Speaker 1: you just specifically looking for tight covering that you're then
- 3:37Speaker 1: not entering, or are you looking for rubs and scrapes?
- 3:40Speaker 1: Are you trying to just find places where they're on
- 3:42Speaker 1: Other people like, what are you looking for in late
- 3:45Speaker 1: November for in season scouting. I'm looking for where Yeah,
- 3:51Speaker 1: you know, I'm not looking for rubs and scrapes. I'm
- 3:54Speaker 1: not looking for anything that feels like an easy place
- 3:57Speaker 1: to hunt, like that nice woods that's open and would
- 4:00Speaker 1: be a great place to call in turkeys. That's I
- 4:02Speaker 1: sucks for deer right now. I'm looking at it like
- 4:05Speaker 1: where are the overgrown homesteads, Where are the thickest, thickest
- 4:09Speaker 1: parts of whatever property I'm hunting, And I'm gonna go
- 4:12Speaker 1: in and look. And you know, if you have snow,
- 4:14Speaker 1: it's really easy this time of year to see if
- 4:16Speaker 1: there's current deer usage. But a lot of places don't.
- 4:18Speaker 1: And so to me, it's just a matter of you know,
- 4:21Speaker 1: what are the tracks on the ground, what what what's
- 4:23Speaker 1: the concentration of dear usage look like? And it's not
- 4:27Speaker 1: gonna be you know, they might be places where there's
- 4:30Speaker 1: rubs and stuff from earlier in the season, but it's
- 4:32Speaker 1: gonna be tracked, it's gonna be trails, it's gonna be
- 4:35Speaker 1: the deer I jump that I almost step on. Those
- 4:38Speaker 1: are really valuable to me because they're kind of a
- 4:42Speaker 1: you know, there are constant confidence booster, but also they
- 4:45Speaker 1: show you there was a deer writing this thing out
- 4:48Speaker 1: right here, that that's real important information. Alright. Well, on
- 4:52Speaker 1: the flip side of the coin, say you are a
- 4:54Speaker 1: gun hunter. Um, I know you recently had an episode
- 4:58Speaker 1: of Foundations that was about how on hunters should think
- 5:01Speaker 1: like bow hunters. You give us a quick synopsis of
- 5:03Speaker 1: what that means. If you're a gun hunter. What can
- 5:06Speaker 1: you learn for someone with our tree equipment. You got
- 5:10Speaker 1: to forget about the big beautiful views and you've got
- 5:13Speaker 1: to get in tight, you know. I mean it's we
- 5:16Speaker 1: we just in bow hunters do this too, but gun
- 5:18Speaker 1: hunters are are fantastic at trying to find places where
- 5:22Speaker 1: they can reach out and touch into here. You know,
- 5:24Speaker 1: and you think you're gonna increase your odds of if
- 5:26Speaker 1: you can see three hundred yards in every direction, or
- 5:29Speaker 1: you sit on that power line and you can shoot
- 5:31Speaker 1: both ways for three yards like this is this is
- 5:33Speaker 1: the spot these are you know, this is my highest odds.
- 5:37Speaker 1: But these deer they know where to go when the
- 5:38Speaker 1: pressure kicks in and to get them to make a
- 5:41Speaker 1: big mistake like moving across a wide open clear cut.
- 5:44Speaker 1: You know, four or five, six days into the gun season,
- 5:46Speaker 1: they're kind not gonna do it. You've gotta get into
- 5:48Speaker 1: some tighter stuff. Now, let's goope down to three power
- 5:52Speaker 1: and hunt in security cover and it's it's a hard
- 5:55Speaker 1: thing to do, but with a little in season scouting
- 5:58Speaker 1: and the willingness to sit type stuff, it usually works.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Or a can word. Yeah, all themes you're gonna hear
- 6:04Speaker 1: from our interviews this week, and we talked to hunters
- 6:06Speaker 1: from West Virginia, Montana, Georgia, and Missouri. And like every week,
- 6:11Speaker 1: we have reading materials for you in the in the
- 6:14Speaker 1: description of the episode, if you just scroll down wherever
- 6:17Speaker 1: you're listening to at you're gonna see these articles linked
- 6:20Speaker 1: right now that are relevant for being in the woods
- 6:22Speaker 1: right now. Right now, we have articles like how to
- 6:25Speaker 1: kill the big buck at the end of the Ruts
- 6:27Speaker 1: by Tony Peterson. Tony talks about how volume hunting and
- 6:30Speaker 1: seeking hot doughs can help you kill them mature white tail.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Right now, we have ten natural food sources every deer
- 6:36Speaker 1: hunter should know by Mark Kenyon. Mark goes over food
- 6:39Speaker 1: sources that can be found across the country and are
- 6:41Speaker 1: especially relevant as we get into post rut, and we
- 6:44Speaker 1: have a caliber battle three oh a Winchester versus two
- 6:47Speaker 1: seventy Winchester by Jordan Sillers. Jordan breaks down two of
- 6:51Speaker 1: the most popular deer cartridges and declares a winner for
- 6:54Speaker 1: which is better for white tail hunters. And then we
- 6:56Speaker 1: have how to kill a buck in late November by
- 6:59Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon Marcus gust Is some themes for hunting when
- 7:01Speaker 1: the rout is coming to an end and guns seasons
- 7:04Speaker 1: are in full swing. So what is next for you? Tony?
- 7:07Speaker 1: What is the next hunt that you have going. I'm
- 7:11Speaker 1: gonna be trying to kill one more dear with a bow,
- 7:14Speaker 1: and in between that and an this year, I don't
- 7:17Speaker 1: have any buck teggs left. And then in between that,
- 7:19Speaker 1: I'm gonna be chasing a whole bunch of public mind
- 7:21Speaker 1: roosters with my dogs going on. I like it. Thank
- 7:25Speaker 1: you for joining me, Tony. Good luck with that annerless
- 7:28Speaker 1: hunt and killing some roosters. Thanks buddy, all right and
- 7:35Speaker 1: joining us online. Next is Bowl Martinic from East meets
- 7:38Speaker 1: West Hunt and also you can find his articles on
- 7:40Speaker 1: Wired hunt website. Who's just hunting in West Virginia Now?
- 7:44Speaker 1: Bow in West Virginia. What would you say the buck
- 7:46Speaker 1: activity has been lately on a scale of one to ten.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I think in the last three or four days it's
- 7:53Speaker 1: been about a nine. Buck activity has definitely increased with
- 7:58Speaker 1: some cold weather that had moved in and went from
- 8:01Speaker 1: being pretty pretty slow to a lot of movement in
- 8:05Speaker 1: the in the last three or four days. And what
- 8:08Speaker 1: phase of the road would you say, southern West Virginia
- 8:11Speaker 1: is in right now? Uh, the I'd say the chasing
- 8:17Speaker 1: and and then even some of the lockdown. We saw
- 8:20Speaker 1: both of that pretty hard throughout the week. There. Um,
- 8:24Speaker 1: where I was hunting was some reclaimed coal mine, so
- 8:27Speaker 1: you could see always and you could see when bucks
- 8:29Speaker 1: would be locked down with those. There was a mixture
- 8:32Speaker 1: of that. And then also just um, wherever the hot
- 8:35Speaker 1: dough was, you'd see four or five bucks just right
- 8:38Speaker 1: on her tail. So in that phase of the road,
- 8:40Speaker 1: I would say, I know you had some close encounters
- 8:42Speaker 1: with some bucks over the last week. When those happened,
- 8:46Speaker 1: why were you in that area and why would those
- 8:48Speaker 1: bucks want to be there? So most of the areas
- 8:53Speaker 1: that we were focusing on were the big valley fields
- 8:57Speaker 1: that were within the valleys of the reclaimed coal mines.
- 9:01Speaker 1: So at the top out of the timber where there's
- 9:04Speaker 1: where they reclaimed those minds, they put a mixture of
- 9:07Speaker 1: some different clovers and and um grasses and things that
- 9:11Speaker 1: the deer like to feed on. So it seemed like
- 9:13Speaker 1: the does like to hang out there, and and also
- 9:16Speaker 1: the bucks will bet on some of those benches, so
- 9:18Speaker 1: we were able to glass into them, and that seemed
- 9:21Speaker 1: to be where we were focusing on and where most
- 9:23Speaker 1: of the movement was. What were you seeing for signmaking
- 9:26Speaker 1: over the last week of scrapes, we were still pretty
- 9:31Speaker 1: hot um a lot of a lot of fresh scrapes.
- 9:33Speaker 1: It was more of the um more of like the
- 9:37Speaker 1: scrape lines that you would see versus them coming in
- 9:39Speaker 1: and pounding one specific scrape, but more as they were
- 9:43Speaker 1: moving and and cruising and hitting some of the scrapes there.
- 9:46Speaker 1: So that was what I was seeing the most UM
- 9:48Speaker 1: from that, not not so much as as fresh rubs
- 9:51Speaker 1: as scrapes. Were you seeing any midday movement at all? Yeah?
- 9:56Speaker 1: There was actually saw more midday movement than any thing
- 10:00Speaker 1: else on, especially on the cold days in the in
- 10:02Speaker 1: the rainy days that that we had hunted um that
- 10:05Speaker 1: that mid middle of the day was was absolute fire.
- 10:10Speaker 1: If you're doing some in seasoned scouting in a forested
- 10:13Speaker 1: area in the east, what are some things that you're
- 10:15Speaker 1: looking for in late November. So the big thing is
- 10:21Speaker 1: trying to figure out where where the dose might be
- 10:24Speaker 1: feeding at this this point, and also the boxes they're
- 10:27Speaker 1: starting to recover. Um. You know, in southern West Virginia
- 10:30Speaker 1: where I was, it's more of the peak rout, but
- 10:33Speaker 1: as you go through most of the the Appalachian Range
- 10:35Speaker 1: east and north is starting to get more into that
- 10:38Speaker 1: post right here now, and they're trying to replenish their body.
- 10:41Speaker 1: So finding any of the fresh clear cuts or if
- 10:44Speaker 1: you're find an areas that still have acorns on the
- 10:46Speaker 1: ground that they're feeding on, they're really starting to hit that,
- 10:49Speaker 1: as well as grasses that you'll find in some gas lines, pipelines,
- 10:54Speaker 1: power lines, things like that. They're really trying to build
- 10:57Speaker 1: up their body. Again, do you notice any big changes
- 11:00Speaker 1: hunting post right in a state like Pennsylvania or West
- 11:03Speaker 1: Virginia then you do in more traditional Midwestern states when
- 11:07Speaker 1: it comes to deer movement and buck activity, Yeah, it
- 11:11Speaker 1: seems to be slower, um, But what I what I
- 11:14Speaker 1: do notice is in that period you do you do
- 11:17Speaker 1: have an opportunity at seeing some of the bigger, more
- 11:20Speaker 1: mature bucks during that time, it's just you you typically
- 11:23Speaker 1: see a few and far in between deer. There's just
- 11:27Speaker 1: there's not as many moving at that period as you
- 11:30Speaker 1: see in more of the pre and and peak rut
- 11:33Speaker 1: phases of that time. So it's it's slower, but it
- 11:36Speaker 1: can really pay off if you find the right right
- 11:38Speaker 1: food source where they're hanging out. If you were running
- 11:41Speaker 1: trail cameras right now and big timber in the east,
- 11:43Speaker 1: where would you want those to be located at. I'd
- 11:47Speaker 1: want to run them on scrapes on the edge of
- 11:50Speaker 1: a newer clear cut um um, or on the edge
- 11:54Speaker 1: of on the edge of some thick cover that's going
- 11:57Speaker 1: out on a point of oaks that have acorns that
- 12:00Speaker 1: are dropping. Some of the similar stuff that you would
- 12:03Speaker 1: see during the pre run as far as cameraplacement, but
- 12:07Speaker 1: focused more around the food than I would around uh,
- 12:11Speaker 1: some of the betting cover going forward. Then, in the
- 12:13Speaker 1: next week or so, what do you think that buck
- 12:15Speaker 1: ACTVT is going to be On a scale of one
- 12:17Speaker 1: to ten in West Virginia, I would say the buck
- 12:21Speaker 1: activity is still would will still be about an eight,
- 12:25Speaker 1: maybe even a nine. Still, it just really seemed like
- 12:27Speaker 1: it was heating up, and especially with the mature bucks
- 12:31Speaker 1: moving in the last few days that I was there,
- 12:33Speaker 1: So I would expect that to continue through this week.
- 12:36Speaker 1: As as a temperature, you're still still pretty cold for
- 12:39Speaker 1: this time of year, our bou. Good luck with the
- 12:42Speaker 1: rest of your season. Thanks for joining me. Thanks Spencer
- 12:45Speaker 1: all right and joining us on the line. Next is
- 12:47Speaker 1: Keith Thompson from Montana. White Tails in Montana. Now Keith
- 12:50Speaker 1: in Montana. What would you say the buck activity has
- 12:52Speaker 1: been lately? On a scale of one to ten, it's
- 12:56Speaker 1: no better than a five. It's been very hit or us,
- 13:00Speaker 1: I guess if you want to call it the trickle effect.
- 13:02Speaker 1: We've been seeing some younger bucks up on their feet,
- 13:04Speaker 1: moving around early mornings, uh the middle till late afternoon,
- 13:09Speaker 1: but not much going on in the middle of the day,
- 13:11Speaker 1: and a lot of the bigger deer we just started
- 13:13Speaker 1: seeing right now. It's been warmer than usual. I mean
- 13:17Speaker 1: it's I'm not one to make excuses, our jobs to make,
- 13:20Speaker 1: you know, make it happen, but it's been awfully windy
- 13:24Speaker 1: and and rather warm, especially for this time of the
- 13:27Speaker 1: year out here. So it's hasn't hasn't benefited us, that's
- 13:31Speaker 1: for sure. So what phases it about? Would you say
- 13:33Speaker 1: white tails in Montana are in right now? Well, the
- 13:39Speaker 1: I guess you could say seeking. I don't know. It's
- 13:41Speaker 1: like you said, the younger bucks seem interested in their
- 13:44Speaker 1: cruising around, but the bigger bucks have just not seeing
- 13:47Speaker 1: And I really don't think they're locked down. I just
- 13:51Speaker 1: we haven't really seen any chasing or anything like that.
- 13:55Speaker 1: I just I don't think they're locked down. It's just
- 13:57Speaker 1: it's been it's been pretty goofy. It's workically, what do
- 14:00Speaker 1: you normally see for signmaking in Montana in late November?
- 14:05Speaker 1: Our scrapes along the field edges are usually torn to
- 14:07Speaker 1: pieces right now and you can generally sit back and
- 14:11Speaker 1: glass of scrape in the morning, and every deer that
- 14:14Speaker 1: leaves the field is usually stopping to check it. And
- 14:16Speaker 1: there again, it's just there's not there hasn't been much
- 14:19Speaker 1: activity as far as that goes. There's there's two scrapes
- 14:22Speaker 1: that are there every year, and they're on the edge
- 14:24Speaker 1: of the field. I mean, I sit there and watch
- 14:25Speaker 1: them all the time and we've had four or five
- 14:28Speaker 1: bucks hited this morning. There again, you know, the oldest
- 14:31Speaker 1: year was probably two and a half years old, and
- 14:33Speaker 1: the bigger bucks were already out of the field by
- 14:35Speaker 1: the time that was light, so I couldn't even see them.
- 14:38Speaker 1: I know they're there, but every once in a while
- 14:41Speaker 1: we'll catch a glimpse of one. But it's just they
- 14:44Speaker 1: haven't the very active this time of year. What food
- 14:47Speaker 1: sources are relevant in a state like Montana, We're hunting
- 14:50Speaker 1: the alfalfa field definitely. Like he said, that's the main
- 14:54Speaker 1: food source. There's not much left for them to eat
- 14:57Speaker 1: other than the alfalfa field. So it helps to you know,
- 15:01Speaker 1: kind of isolate the deer, to haunt them. But it
- 15:04Speaker 1: just it hasn't been a very good lately. Besides on scrapes.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Where do you want to be running your trail cameras
- 15:11Speaker 1: in late November? Um, there again, we don't. We don't
- 15:15Speaker 1: run that many, uh, simply for the fact that we
- 15:18Speaker 1: can pretty much keep visual on our deer from you know,
- 15:21Speaker 1: different vantage points, glassing atmospheres. We we run three or four,
- 15:25Speaker 1: but most of them are on scrapes, just because they're
- 15:28Speaker 1: they're so productive as far as getting different bulks, stopping
- 15:31Speaker 1: and hitting them. But what we do is actually, you know,
- 15:34Speaker 1: visual glassing. As we come into the last weekend of
- 15:38Speaker 1: the season. Say you had a client who is hunting
- 15:40Speaker 1: with a rifle, what does a textbook set up look
- 15:43Speaker 1: like for you guys for that gun hunter on this situation,
- 15:48Speaker 1: I'm just I'm trying to get somewherehere I can see
- 15:50Speaker 1: as far as I can um. We'll have a We'll
- 15:54Speaker 1: get up high where maybe we can look down into
- 15:56Speaker 1: the river bed or cover a lot of ground, especially
- 15:59Speaker 1: with the gun. I mean, I want to I want
- 16:01Speaker 1: to maximize the weapon. So if we can get up
- 16:04Speaker 1: high and maybe glass a buck that has a dough
- 16:06Speaker 1: run off somewhere, if we can watch him bed down somewhere,
- 16:10Speaker 1: we could make a stock on him. That's that's my
- 16:13Speaker 1: main deal. I mean, we do a lot of tree
- 16:14Speaker 1: stand hunting because we have the river bottom and and
- 16:17Speaker 1: it's successful that way. But I personally, I like to
- 16:21Speaker 1: be able to if I can make a move and
- 16:23Speaker 1: cover ground, That's what I want to do going forward. Then,
- 16:26Speaker 1: in this next week or so, what do you think
- 16:28Speaker 1: that buck activt is going to be on a scale
- 16:30Speaker 1: of one to ten in Montana. Well, hopefully a seven
- 16:34Speaker 1: or eight just to close the year out. I saw
- 16:35Speaker 1: there a little bit of a weather front coming through. Um,
- 16:38Speaker 1: I'm hoping that gets things popping here a little bit.
- 16:41Speaker 1: We have we are four hunters less than camps, so
- 16:44Speaker 1: we're trying to we we shot one yesterday, A bow
- 16:47Speaker 1: hunter shot one yesterday, so that was good. Um, but
- 16:50Speaker 1: we're were four four deer tags left. We'd like to
- 16:54Speaker 1: you know, go out on top heer to close the year. Alright, Keith,
- 16:57Speaker 1: good luck to you and your clients in camp. Thanks
- 16:59Speaker 1: for joining me. Thank you all right enjoining us on
- 17:02Speaker 1: the line. Next is Spencer Kandaschewsky from Redline Hunting in Georgia.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Now Spencer in Georgia. What would you say the buck
- 17:09Speaker 1: activity is ben lately on a scale of one to ten. Man, Yeah,
- 17:13Speaker 1: you know, looking really really being in the woods last
- 17:15Speaker 1: couple of weeks, I would say these this past couple
- 17:18Speaker 1: of days, I would I read about like six or seven. Um,
- 17:22Speaker 1: we've we've seen a bunch of small bucks chasing does
- 17:26Speaker 1: um during the day, you know, Um, but nothing none
- 17:29Speaker 1: of our big time um shooter bucks that we got
- 17:32Speaker 1: on a camera. I've really I've really shown up really
- 17:34Speaker 1: chasing these does yet. Um. And actually we just talked
- 17:37Speaker 1: to one of my buddies. He actually, UM, he was
- 17:40Speaker 1: hunting and he had one dough come in and he uh,
- 17:44Speaker 1: that dough brought in about three to four different small bucks.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Um that still ended up leaving. The bucks took off
- 17:50Speaker 1: after that dough, and another dough came in and didn't
- 17:53Speaker 1: bring one single buck in. So it kind of tells
- 17:56Speaker 1: me that some does in this area where we're at,
- 17:58Speaker 1: you know, Northeast Georgia, some some doughs are hot and
- 18:01Speaker 1: some are some are not. So I would think it's
- 18:04Speaker 1: kind of starting to really really gear up towards that
- 18:06Speaker 1: peak rut. But as as overall out of ten, I
- 18:09Speaker 1: would say probably six or seven out of ten for
- 18:11Speaker 1: the past couple of days. So what phases it rout
- 18:13Speaker 1: would you say Northeast Georgia is in right now? I
- 18:17Speaker 1: would say I would say that pre rut really transition
- 18:20Speaker 1: into peak rut right now. I think these like coming
- 18:23Speaker 1: coming forward. UM. I think the next couple of day
- 18:25Speaker 1: is gonna be awesome to be in the woods for.
- 18:28Speaker 1: And then another story, actually, another firefighter that we worked with, UM,
- 18:33Speaker 1: he actually called me yesterday about a dough that was
- 18:36Speaker 1: caught in the fence. So they got called out to
- 18:38Speaker 1: this call, fire truck show up. They got this dough
- 18:40Speaker 1: that's stuck in the fence, and they look up and
- 18:42Speaker 1: they had a monster eight point buck just staring at
- 18:46Speaker 1: staring at this though about fifty yards is actually pretty
- 18:49Speaker 1: close to little subdivision with some woods behind it. So uh,
- 18:53Speaker 1: the guys were trying to get this dough down and
- 18:54Speaker 1: this buck would not leave. He just watched the entire time.
- 18:58Speaker 1: They ended up cutting the dough down and as soon
- 19:00Speaker 1: as that dough hit the ground and got on her
- 19:02Speaker 1: feet and took off, that buck instantly started chasing her down. So, um,
- 19:07Speaker 1: it's after any kind of determining factor of of what
- 19:10Speaker 1: kind of stage we're in, I think that pretty much
- 19:12Speaker 1: means that it's it's almost at that p peak time
- 19:14Speaker 1: of rut. I know you're running a lot of trail
- 19:16Speaker 1: cameras there. Where do you want to be running your
- 19:18Speaker 1: camps in late November in Georgia? You know to start
- 19:23Speaker 1: with UM, right now, we're really focused on you know,
- 19:26Speaker 1: scrapes and rugs. Um, that's where we got a lot
- 19:29Speaker 1: of our cell camps, and we really focus a lot
- 19:31Speaker 1: of self cameras on the betting areas, you know, coming
- 19:33Speaker 1: into coming into the rut. If we can find ourselves
- 19:36Speaker 1: kind of hunting the spot where we can get them
- 19:38Speaker 1: transition year back and forth from from feeding to betting.
- 19:42Speaker 1: That's where we really run our cell cameras. Um. And
- 19:45Speaker 1: we try not to get in there as much, only
- 19:47Speaker 1: if we're gonna hunt it, because we don't want to
- 19:49Speaker 1: spook out a lot of these doughs that could eventually
- 19:51Speaker 1: be bringing these bring these bucks into that area. But um,
- 19:55Speaker 1: for the most part, yeah, we're gonna put We're gonna
- 19:57Speaker 1: put cameras on scrapes, bettings and buck rubs. What food
- 20:01Speaker 1: sources are relevant right now in that part of the country. UM.
- 20:05Speaker 1: So it's been real hot and heavy on the acorns lately. Um.
- 20:09Speaker 1: You know, I talked to a lot of guys that
- 20:10Speaker 1: do run feeders and stuff, and for the past couple weeks,
- 20:14Speaker 1: nothing is coming to the theaters. They want no interest
- 20:16Speaker 1: in that. Or you know, a couple of people have
- 20:18Speaker 1: got to natural food plots as well and still get
- 20:20Speaker 1: a couple of dolls and stuff coming out there out there,
- 20:22Speaker 1: but mostly in the middle of the night. Um. But
- 20:25Speaker 1: we had a good supply of acorns stop this year. Um,
- 20:28Speaker 1: but I do anticipate in the next couple of weeks
- 20:30Speaker 1: those are gonna start diminishing a little bit, and I
- 20:33Speaker 1: think they'll eventually start working towards more food plots and
- 20:36Speaker 1: more feeders if you have them out there. If you're
- 20:39Speaker 1: forced to do some in seasoned scouting in late November
- 20:42Speaker 1: and Georgia, what are some things that you're looking for? Man,
- 20:46Speaker 1: I'm I'm gonna really try to find, um find good
- 20:49Speaker 1: pinch points and good funnel points for for these deer
- 20:52Speaker 1: to be cruising in. If you have do you have
- 20:54Speaker 1: the ability where you have enough land where you can
- 20:56Speaker 1: get yourself in a in a good in between spot
- 20:59Speaker 1: that those transition spots. I think that's gonna be the best,
- 21:03Speaker 1: the best spot to to try to do some scouting early.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Find find where you want to sit and where you
- 21:08Speaker 1: want to where you want to hunt at, and set
- 21:11Speaker 1: up there. Um that, And I think you know, in
- 21:15Speaker 1: the afternoons especially, these dolls are gonna be out, They're
- 21:17Speaker 1: gonna be starting to feed a little bit more and more.
- 21:19Speaker 1: You're coming into the late November, and I think if
- 21:21Speaker 1: you can get on a food plot that'd be also
- 21:23Speaker 1: a good option for yourself as well going forward. Then
- 21:26Speaker 1: this next week or so, what do you think that
- 21:27Speaker 1: bucket TV is going to be on the scale of
- 21:29Speaker 1: one to ten in Georgia? Man, I think these next
- 21:34Speaker 1: couple of weeks, especially the next couple of days, it's
- 21:36Speaker 1: going to be a ten out of ten um. I'm
- 21:38Speaker 1: really optimistic about that. Like I said, it's it's a
- 21:41Speaker 1: weird state, you know, George's you know, we've got so
- 21:44Speaker 1: many it seems like we have so many different ruts
- 21:47Speaker 1: in different counties. You know, you can talk to one
- 21:49Speaker 1: person next to you and they seems like they have
- 21:51Speaker 1: no butt rut activity, and then the next person you
- 21:54Speaker 1: talked to there and full blown rut um. I think
- 21:57Speaker 1: part of the reason before that is we've got introduced
- 22:00Speaker 1: who so many different here from different states because they
- 22:02Speaker 1: did populate to here to try to get them back here.
- 22:05Speaker 1: But I think overall this next week coming forward, it's
- 22:08Speaker 1: gonna be a ten ten. It's gonna be a it's
- 22:10Speaker 1: gonna be a good time to be in the woods,
- 22:12Speaker 1: and if you can get the time off, I would
- 22:14Speaker 1: try to do it. Alright, Spencer, good luck to you
- 22:16Speaker 1: and everyone else from red Line Hunting. Thanks for joining me. Awesome,
- 22:21Speaker 1: Thank you appreciate it. Thanks Spencer alright and joining us
- 22:24Speaker 1: on the line. Last is Nate Thomas from Missouri Woods
- 22:27Speaker 1: and Water podcast in Missouri. Now Nate in Missouri, what
- 22:31Speaker 1: would you say the buck activity has been lately on
- 22:33Speaker 1: a scale of one to ten, lately, I would say
- 22:37Speaker 1: it's probably somewhere around the five. Um. I think a
- 22:40Speaker 1: lot of bucks have got those locked down right now.
- 22:44Speaker 1: I think there's also some bucks that are searching for
- 22:47Speaker 1: that that second or third or maybe even forth right
- 22:50Speaker 1: now they're um looking again, but seems to have piled off,
- 22:55Speaker 1: especially with this being towards the tail end of our
- 22:58Speaker 1: rifle season. UM, seems like it's kind of dying a
- 23:02Speaker 1: little bit at least in our area. So what phase
- 23:04Speaker 1: of about would you say that Missouri's in right now?
- 23:08Speaker 1: If I had to, like say a phase, I would
- 23:10Speaker 1: probably say like in the lockdown, you know, second searching
- 23:16Speaker 1: for the second time kind of that area right now there, UM,
- 23:21Speaker 1: I'm seeing a lot less activity on like trail cams
- 23:24Speaker 1: with bucks um, and a lot less activity during the day. Now.
- 23:28Speaker 1: I haven't hunted in the past seven days now because
- 23:31Speaker 1: I did tag out last week. But um, I'm just
- 23:35Speaker 1: through talking with certain friends and different people in our area. UM,
- 23:38Speaker 1: I think they're kind of ghost in a little bit
- 23:41Speaker 1: and kind of locking down with some of those those
- 23:43Speaker 1: Now you guys are about two weeks into Missouri's gun season.
- 23:46Speaker 1: What do you notice for a shifting deer movement at
- 23:49Speaker 1: the end of the gun season and going into the
- 23:51Speaker 1: archery season again? Yeah from this, UM don't The last
- 23:59Speaker 1: two years for sure has hit right at the peak
- 24:04Speaker 1: of the rut what I would call like the top
- 24:05Speaker 1: of that bell curve um that you hear everybody talk about.
- 24:09Speaker 1: And I don't think this year was any different. Um,
- 24:12Speaker 1: those first few days, let's say, five days in the
- 24:15Speaker 1: gun season, we're just um, all kinds of craziness. Um.
- 24:19Speaker 1: And then I think, you know the Orange Army. UM,
- 24:23Speaker 1: I'm not saying anything about bad about him. UM, there's
- 24:26Speaker 1: so much pressure and craziness that happens those first few days. UM,
- 24:30Speaker 1: I think you see a decrease in in movement, not
- 24:33Speaker 1: only because the ruts moving on, but also these deer
- 24:36Speaker 1: are just getting harassed by hundreds in the woods and
- 24:40Speaker 1: I think a lot of them not only are are
- 24:43Speaker 1: trying to rut they're also trying to run for their lives.
- 24:45Speaker 1: So it's kind of unique in my opinion, in our
- 24:48Speaker 1: our state because it's there's all kinds of things going
- 24:52Speaker 1: on all at once during that time. What are you
- 24:55Speaker 1: seeing for signmaking right now? Not a whole lot. I
- 24:59Speaker 1: you know, on my particular property, I saw some scrapes
- 25:02Speaker 1: that looked like one of those scrapes that a buck
- 25:05Speaker 1: started making but then got bored with it a few
- 25:08Speaker 1: seconds into it. Um. You know, I see more just
- 25:11Speaker 1: straight up searching more than anything, just cruising, going through
- 25:16Speaker 1: betting areas, getting out of there onto the next one. UM.
- 25:20Speaker 1: Not a whole lot of signmaking. You said that you've
- 25:23Speaker 1: been observing your trail cameras for the last couple of weeks.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Where do you want to be running your trail cameras
- 25:27Speaker 1: in late November in Missouri? Late November, so after deer
- 25:34Speaker 1: season or after a rifle season is over. Um, I
- 25:38Speaker 1: would go back to that kind of that early season
- 25:41Speaker 1: like transition areas. UM. In my opinion, once the ruts
- 25:44Speaker 1: kind of tailing off. Sure, you'll have some of those
- 25:47Speaker 1: go groups that are coming in late and we're still
- 25:49Speaker 1: going to have some activity, I'm sure, But I think
- 25:52Speaker 1: the bucks are just so run down at that point
- 25:55Speaker 1: from running and trying not to die from the rifle hunters,
- 25:59Speaker 1: that they're gonna be looking to um uh eat again
- 26:03Speaker 1: and try to live their lives. So I kind of
- 26:06Speaker 1: transition back to those bedding and transition areas to and
- 26:09Speaker 1: from from food and what food sources are elevant right
- 26:12Speaker 1: now in that part of the country. I've been seeing
- 26:16Speaker 1: deer on corn a lot right now, cut corn fields
- 26:19Speaker 1: which have been cut for weeks here. Um, seems like
- 26:22Speaker 1: every time I see a deer outfeeding, the hearing there
- 26:24Speaker 1: in cut corn fields currently going forward. Then in this
- 26:28Speaker 1: next week or so, what do you think that buck
- 26:30Speaker 1: activity is going to be on a scale of one
- 26:32Speaker 1: to ten in Missouri. I think it's probably gonna drop
- 26:36Speaker 1: in the next week or so. Um. Rifle season ends
- 26:40Speaker 1: in the next day or two here in our state,
- 26:43Speaker 1: and I think we're on the tail end of our
- 26:47Speaker 1: our rut. I mean, I think we're on the lower
- 26:49Speaker 1: end of that bell curve. Uh So I think activity
- 26:52Speaker 1: is probably gonna drop even more. We're supposed to have
- 26:54Speaker 1: a uh some several warm days coming here in the
- 26:58Speaker 1: next few days. I think think Giving Day is supposed
- 27:01Speaker 1: to be a beautiful day as far as hunting would go,
- 27:03Speaker 1: but I would say we're probably gonna drop from like
- 27:05Speaker 1: A five down to US three or four. Alright, Nate,
- 27:08Speaker 1: good luck with the rest of your season, and thanks
- 27:09Speaker 1: for joining me. All right, thanks Spencer, and that concludes
