- 0:00Yeah. Um Missouri, you know, 10 and0
- 0:04this year at home after, you know, big
- 0:06win against Florida in their SEC opener.
- 0:09You really can't judge this team um
- 0:13unless you look at the last three games
- 0:15just because, you know, with Jaden Stone
- 0:17coming back and and Trent Pierce like
- 0:20really gives them two perimeter threats
- 0:23that, you know, they didn't have against
- 0:24Illinois. you know, 13 of their 21 made
- 0:28threes in conference play have come from
- 0:29those two guys. So, they add a totally
- 0:32different dimension to their offense and
- 0:34don't allow you just to pack it in. So,
- 0:36um you know, they just have they're a
- 0:38lot better offensively with those two
- 0:40out there on the floor and um both have
- 0:42given them a nice boost since they
- 0:43started conference play. You know, to
- 0:45beat Florida and Kentucky in your first
- 0:47two is, you know, obviously that's a
- 0:49statement right there and um you know,
- 0:51Coach Gates has done a really good job
- 0:52in his four seasons there. Um, so yeah,
- 0:55they're going to play a bunch of guys.
- 0:57Um, you know, they have
- 1:0111 guys that average 14 minutes a game.
- 1:04Um, so you're not really sure outside of
- 1:06their top seven, you know, who he's
- 1:08going to play afterwards. Um, they kind
- 1:10of mix it up as they go. Um, they got
- 1:13tremendous size. You know, them and
- 1:15Florida are two of the biggest teams in
- 1:16our in our conference. Uh, so that
- 1:18that'll pose as a challenge to us. um
- 1:22you know shoot good good percentages
- 1:23from from you know all over the floor.
- 1:25Um you know the only place they really
- 1:27struggle the most is at the free throw
- 1:29line and they do a really good job of
- 1:31rebounding their misses off free throws.
- 1:33So you know offensively um you know
- 1:36they're going to do a lot of switching
- 1:37and um you know they do a good job of
- 1:39contesting shots around the rim and then
- 1:41offensively you know they they have some
- 1:43really uh prolific playmakers. You know,
- 1:45Mark Mitchell is a guy that does so many
- 1:47things. Um, and he's not just a great
- 1:50passer, he's a he's or sorry, a great
- 1:51scoreer. He's a great passer. You know,
- 1:5314 assists and five turnovers in in
- 1:55three league games so far. So, you know,
- 1:58he if you double him, he's going to make
- 2:00you pay. If you don't double him, he's
- 2:01going to make you pay. And, you know,
- 2:03Anthony Robinson's a guy that we've, you
- 2:04know, known for a long time and a guy
- 2:06that just affects the game with his
- 2:08defense and does a great job of kind of
- 2:10setting the table for them. So, um, you
- 2:12know, you're going to hear me say it a
- 2:14lot, but another great opportunity
- 2:15against a really good team.
- 2:20>> You guys held Arkansas just 28 points in
- 2:23the paint and Cal was here talking about
- 2:25how much they want to be a paint touch
- 2:28team. What was the key to holding them
- 2:30out of that? And it seemed like you guys
- 2:32did a better job like really contesting
- 2:34when they got when they got down there
- 2:35and bumping a lot more. Yeah, I mean our
- 2:37gap defense was just so much better than
- 2:39it was uh in the Georgia game and uh you
- 2:42know I thought we had multiple
- 2:43possessions where when the ball did get
- 2:45penetrated we did a good job of
- 2:47contesting without fouling and um that
- 2:50was you know something that we've really
- 2:51harped on all year is just getting
- 2:52vertical at the rim and you know don't
- 2:54bail them out you know don't don't bail
- 2:56teams out and give them you know um free
- 2:59throws make them earn everything at the
- 3:01rim and I thought we did a better job of
- 3:03that but we were just we were just more
- 3:05loaded to the ball against uh Arkansas
- 3:07and um you know we'd been so spread out
- 3:10in previous games that it allowed teams
- 3:13driving lanes to to get downhill and
- 3:14that's when your defense gets in
- 3:16rotations. So we were just way more
- 3:17intentional about loading to the ball
- 3:19and being in gaps in that game
- 3:25>> really down to two three SEC games where
- 3:28Philip has been the most available. He's
- 3:29had a big impact particularly on the
- 3:31defensive end. What are one or two areas
- 3:33you've seen from him in terms of the
- 3:35most development over over the last few
- 3:36weeks? Because I I know that you all
- 3:38knew he was going to be kind of a
- 3:39development player over the course of
- 3:40the season.
- 3:41>> Yeah, I mean, defensively, he's just,
- 3:43you know, one of the he's just really
- 3:45shown an ability to sit down and just
- 3:47guard and uh keep his man in front and,
- 3:49you know, he's just he's so coachable.
- 3:51You know, we tell him to get low and get
- 3:52wide and he looks like a damn spider
- 3:54down there. Just like gets as low as he
- 3:56possibly can. and he spreads his arms
- 3:58out as wide as he possibly can and just
- 4:00gets into a stance and it's really hard
- 4:02to drive when when you're that spread
- 4:03out and you're taking up that much real
- 4:05estate. So, um then he does a good job
- 4:07of just loading the ball being in gaps
- 4:09and when we ask him to impact ball
- 4:10screens, he impacts ball screens because
- 4:12he's got great speed and great quickness
- 4:14to do those things and he's got active
- 4:15hands. So, you know, he just does a
- 4:17little bit of everything and then he
- 4:18does a great job of just contesting and
- 4:20getting vertical at the rim without
- 4:21fouling. And those are all the things
- 4:23that that we ask him to do and uh he's
- 4:26done a great job with that. so far. You
- 4:27know, you saw a couple times him just
- 4:29kind of using his speed and his
- 4:31quickness offensively to either get
- 4:32around his man or go get an offensive
- 4:34rebound and then did a great job of
- 4:35using shot fakes on a team that likes to
- 4:37jump to block shots and then, you know,
- 4:39finish and he had seven big points in
- 4:40that first half that got us off to a
- 4:42really good start. So, you know, he just
- 4:45does everything we ask him and he just
- 4:47finds ways to be impactful and
- 4:49effective, you know, when he's out
- 4:50there. If our if our fives can play like
- 4:52they did against Arkansas, our team's
- 4:54going to be, you know, in position to
- 4:56win games. The Murf and Philip, that was
- 4:58their best combined game I think they've
- 5:00had all year. And it it was definitely
- 5:01it definitely showed on on the stat
- 5:03sheet.
- 5:05>> Staying on Phil, he was only able to
- 5:06play 12 minutes, but he was plus 13.
- 5:09Just what does that say about him even
- 5:11in that little amount of time that can
- 5:12impact a game like that?
- 5:14>> Yeah, it just shows that, you know, he's
- 5:15a winning basketball player and, you
- 5:17know, he affects winning in so many
- 5:19different ways. So, um, you know, it's
- 5:24would love to play him more. You know, I
- 5:25thought that was one of Murf's best
- 5:26games as well. So, um, it's a good
- 5:29problem to have when he's only playing
- 5:3112 because that means Murf's playing
- 5:32great. And I thought Murf did play play
- 5:34really well in this game. So, uh, but
- 5:36with how big Missouri is, it's going to
- 5:38require, you know, more more use of our
- 5:41front line um, and probably getting
- 5:43Philip more minutes because, you know,
- 5:45he's got to use his speed and quickness
- 5:47against some of their bigger players.
- 5:48But yeah, he just, you know, um he
- 5:52always talks about that that's my role.
- 5:53That's what I'm supposed to do. That's
- 5:54that's what you need me to do. That's
- 5:55what I'm going to do. And he's all about
- 5:57the team and he's all about winning. And
- 5:59you know, I know Philip probably enjoys
- 6:01the way we're playing more than anybody
- 6:02because it's more, you know, similar to
- 6:04what he's been accustomed to just as far
- 6:06as how we're sharing the basketball and
- 6:08just playing team basketball. And um I
- 6:10think it's helped it's it's affected his
- 6:12play for for the better.
- 6:15>> Going off with Murf, I mean the last We
- 6:18talked about when he came back from
- 6:19Christmas, how he looked like a
- 6:20different guy. Just is is these last few
- 6:23games from him down low kind of a lot of
- 6:24what y'all saw in him when y'all picked
- 6:26him up from Mississippi State like the
- 6:28guy that y'all thought he could be all
- 6:29season long? Obviously the injuries, you
- 6:31know, affected him before that.
- 6:33>> Yeah. Um yeah, he's just moving
- 6:35different, moving his feet different.
- 6:37He's jumping more. um you know, he's
- 6:39getting vertical at the rim and
- 6:41obviously you you've seen the ability of
- 6:43him to knock down shots and you know
- 6:45that just kind of makes him
- 6:47multi-dimensional when you got to guard
- 6:49him on the perimeter because you know
- 6:51he's obvious he's also got the speed and
- 6:53the quickness to drive by his man. Um
- 6:55but no, he's just way more active out
- 6:57there and um just has more pop and uh
- 7:00you know, it's just it's why our team's,
- 7:02you know, since since the Purdue games,
- 7:04just we we've continuously gotten
- 7:06better. And I think a big part of that
- 7:07is because, you know, him and Philip are
- 7:08playing well right now. And you know,
- 7:10for us to continue to be competitive and
- 7:12win games, we need that to keep going in
- 7:15that direction.
- 7:18>> You guys the last three games played
- 7:20like three of the fastest teams you're
- 7:21going to play to your three top 20
- 7:22teams. These next three against seems to
- 7:25kind of slow us down a little bit more.
- 7:26What's the key when you play it like
- 7:28that going back and forth like you guys,
- 7:31you know, do you feel like you maybe be
- 7:33able to speed up some of these teams a
- 7:34little bit more? Um, and not getting in
- 7:36a track meet like y'all tried to avoid,
- 7:38I guess, in the last couple.
- 7:40>> Uh, I mean, we I think we can play in in
- 7:42either way. Um, so, you know, Missouri
- 7:45has a really good record when they score
- 7:47over, you know, 72 points, so they can
- 7:50play fast, too. Um, so, you know, I
- 7:52think we showed against Arkansas. We did
- 7:54a really good job of scoring early and
- 7:56scoring late and trying to avoid middle
- 7:58offense. And I think that's something
- 7:59that, you know, that was probably our
- 8:01most that was probably our best
- 8:02offensive efficiency game of the year.
- 8:04Um, just as far as possessions and what
- 8:06we were able to do. So, um, you know, I
- 8:08think that's something that we got to
- 8:09continue to build off of because on the
- 8:10road, you know, teams are, you know, by
- 8:13nature going to try and play faster at
- 8:15home. Um, so I think we got to do a
- 8:17better job of just controlling tempo,
- 8:19uh, and not letting it turn into a track
- 8:20meet like we did at Georgia. While
- 8:23because, you know, I think Missouri, you
- 8:24know, they're a team that is big, so
- 8:27bigger teams sometimes struggle to get
- 8:28back in transition. But once they get
- 8:30their defense set, you know, they're
- 8:32they have one of the best two-point
- 8:33defenses in the country, especially
- 8:35since conference play started. So, um,
- 8:37you know, we just got to recognize that
- 8:39and, uh, kind of take what the defense
- 8:40gives us.
- 8:42I know it might change for y'all if
- 8:44Kaden is back available, but what do you
- 8:47still want to see from Blake in that
- 8:49role coming off the bench, whether he's
- 8:51the backup point guard, whether he's
- 8:52doing whatever in the back, what are you
- 8:54still kind of looking for him from on a
- 8:56day-to-day basis to remain in that
- 8:57rotation?
- 8:58>> Yeah, I mean, if he can continue to
- 9:00guard like he did, like he always does,
- 9:02you know, he's got to cut down his fouls
- 9:04a little bit. So, defensively, just
- 9:06being a guy that can give us a boost off
- 9:08the bench. And then for him like
- 9:10offensively I'm like I don't need you to
- 9:11do anything but just get us into our
- 9:12offense and if your man's pressed up
- 9:14into you like do what you do in practice
- 9:16and just drive by him and um you know
- 9:19just got to avoid live ball turnovers
- 9:21and um you know get us into what we do
- 9:23and he did a great job of all those
- 9:25things against Arkansas. So you know
- 9:27it's one of those less is more type
- 9:29roles you know at that backup point
- 9:30guard position. somebody that can come
- 9:32in and just kind of, you know, do what's
- 9:34required for us to be better defensively
- 9:36and be able to get into our stuff
- 9:37offensively.
- 9:40>> 22 assists for Todd over the last few
- 9:42games or four games. Like you challenged
- 9:44him to be more of a playmaker and all
- 9:46that. Just how much have you seen him
- 9:48kind of take that to heart with the way
- 9:50he's been playing?
- 9:52>> Yeah. And I think he had 16 in two of
- 9:54those games. So I I need more nine
- 9:56assists, seven assist games out of him.
- 9:58if they're gonna if they're going to put
- 9:59two on the ball like that, then he's got
- 10:01to get off it like he had like he did in
- 10:03those two games. And it's really
- 10:04important because it makes our offense
- 10:06so much better. Um because, you know,
- 10:08the more he does that, the easier it's
- 10:10going to be on him offensively or we're
- 10:12just going to, you know, win games like
- 10:13we did on Saturday. Um, so yeah, it's
- 10:16definitely something that I'll continue
- 10:18to challenge him on because, you know,
- 10:20um, we have some guys that can really
- 10:22make plays off the ball and, um, when he
- 10:25has a facilitating mindset, I think it
- 10:27really helps us because we know how good
- 10:29he is offensively and how good he I
- 10:31mean, how well he can score the
- 10:32basketball. Um, but, you know, I think
- 10:34it's shown that our most efficient
- 10:36nights offensively is when he's in a
- 10:38facilitating capacity and then I think
- 10:40his offense will open up because of
- 10:42that.
- 10:44I see on assists as well. Same thing.
- 10:47You look at I think it was the third
- 10:48most assists you guys had all season.
- 10:50What what's the message to the team in
- 10:52terms of being able to point that out
- 10:53and go when you guys share the ball,
- 10:54it's a completely different thing.
- 10:55Especially even transitioning to defense
- 10:57probably helps you set set up things on
- 10:59that end as well versus when he gets
- 11:02bogged down or too much dribbling or
- 11:04whatever. What's kind of the message to
- 11:05him about how to continue to share the
- 11:07basketball?
- 11:08>> I mean, one is do you like winning? you
- 11:10know, um that's one, but then two, like
- 11:13selfish offense leads to selfish
- 11:15defense. Unselfish offense leads to
- 11:17unselfish defense. And I thought we had
- 11:19a lot of unselfish offense against
- 11:21Arkansas, and it led to a lot of
- 11:22unselfish defense against Arkansas. So,
- 11:25you know, that's just the message. Um
- 11:27it's shown, you know, um when we, you
- 11:30know, I'm not sure what our average is
- 11:31when we win games, but it's got to be
- 11:32like 15 or 16 assists per game when we
- 11:34win, and when we lose, it's got to be
- 11:36like right around 10. So, um, but I mean
- 11:39I'll say this, like since I talked about
- 11:41it the other day, just we've had a lot
- 11:43of good practices since Christmas. And
- 11:45if you look on Barurvik since Christmas,
- 11:47we're the ninth best team in college
- 11:48basketball. Ninth most efficient team in
- 11:50college basketball on both ends of the
- 11:52floor. We're two and two, which is
- 11:54really disappointing because, you know,
- 11:55to be playing that well, your record
- 11:58should be better. But it shows that what
- 12:00we're doing in practice, what we're
- 12:02doing in film, what we're doing in our
- 12:03individual meetings has been productive.
- 12:06And it's it's it's you know results have
- 12:09you know are going to continue to come
- 12:10if we continue to stay bought into what
- 12:12we've been doing every single day. Um,
- 12:15so just got to continue to trust that
- 12:17and you know, we're playing good
- 12:18basketball right now and it's all
- 12:20because we've been really intentional
- 12:21with what we've been doing in practice
- 12:23and we got to keep that
