- 4:17Speaker 8: But Parker Fill of Chaine sounds healthy.
- 4:19Speaker 2: It's not too good. Still got a few dimes to rattle.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Has been coming too fast.
- 4:22Speaker 5: Let you know, he's still setting pins down there at
- 4:25Speaker 5: that bowling alley.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Yeah, uh huh. A lot of help hanging around now
- 4:29Speaker 2: that really gotta hustle for it, that's all.
- 4:30Speaker 6: Oh yeah, a lot of the.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Alley's changing over to those automatic machines. You know, quite
- 4:34Speaker 2: a few guys out Elijah. Machines can set pins better

- 5:07Speaker 5: Yeah, it's fine, ring a couple of those jelly donuts,
- 5:09Speaker 5: could you okay?
- 5:10Speaker 6: All right? What's the story Dave? When you were here?
- 5:14Speaker 2: I heard about it last night right after I left
- 5:16Speaker 2: the alley. He told me to keep my ears up,
- 5:18Speaker 2: you know, yeah, said, you figured it might be something
- 5:20Speaker 2: on that new bunch hanging around a bar down from
- 5:22Speaker 2: the alleys. You figured they might tie in with a
- 5:24Speaker 2: new bunch of high.
- 5:24Speaker 7: Rollers in time.
- 5:25Speaker 6: Yeah, what'd you pick up?
- 5:27Speaker 7: I think you figured right from what I heard. Anyway,
- 5:29Speaker 7: here you go, how don't do? Oh?
- 5:31Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 5:32Speaker 7: Thanks?
- 5:32Speaker 2: You make a fine waiter lock with thanks.
- 5:34Speaker 7: We don't get a lead. Pretty soon I may have
- 5:36Speaker 7: to take it up.
- 5:36Speaker 5: Dave was just telling me that he figures he might
- 5:38Speaker 5: have something for us. He picked it up with the
- 5:40Speaker 5: spot down from the alleys last night.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Well, like I said, after I was through at the alleys,
- 5:43Speaker 2: I stopped by the place and I had a couple
- 5:45Speaker 2: of beers. Can't afford anything else, A few nickelas they'd
- 5:47Speaker 2: pay me lucky to get enough to eat.
- 5:49Speaker 6: The way things are going, Yeah, it's pretty rough.
- 5:51Speaker 5: I know.
- 5:51Speaker 6: Well, what's the pitcher got? Dave?
- 5:53Speaker 2: While I was sitting there having a beer and a
- 5:55Speaker 2: couple of those new faces were sitting next to me,
- 5:56Speaker 2: So I put my ear out tried to pick up
- 5:58Speaker 2: some of the tall.
- 5:59Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 6:00Speaker 2: I couldn't get all of it, but I did get
- 6:01Speaker 2: enough to make out there's gonna be a big game tonight.
- 6:03Speaker 2: From what I could get, there's gonna be a lot
- 6:05Speaker 2: of scratch floating.
- 6:06Speaker 7: Now you hear what's gonna be there?
- 6:07Speaker 2: I had to play it careful.
- 6:08Speaker 7: You know it couldn't be two nots.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Yeah, sure, I uh said, and had another beer in
- 6:13Speaker 2: one of this new monks. Heard the other guy call
- 6:14Speaker 2: him Mike. I think he has the bartender for change
- 6:17Speaker 2: to make a phone call. He got the change, went over.
- 6:18Speaker 7: The wall phone.
- 6:19Speaker 2: I got up and drifted over that way and made
- 6:21Speaker 2: out like I was watching the shuffle board. I caught
- 6:24Speaker 2: some of the tall.
- 6:25Speaker 6: Now what was that?
- 6:26Speaker 2: Well, he was talking about some big game tonight. I
- 6:28Speaker 2: heard him say the guy in the other end not
- 6:30Speaker 2: to show up.
- 6:30Speaker 5: Before eleven thirty could get an address.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Yeah, he said he'd be back of an empty store
- 6:35Speaker 2: building down on Gibbons Avenue, and you get the number
- 6:38Speaker 2: nine one two two.
- 6:39Speaker 6: What was that again? Nine one two yeah, Gibbons.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm pretty sure. As soon as I got out
- 6:44Speaker 2: of the place, I wrote it down. Whin I got
- 6:47Speaker 2: let's see, yeah, nine one two two Gibbons.
- 6:51Speaker 6: Yeah, that's see.
- 6:52Speaker 5: Now, this fellow that made the phone call, you say
- 6:54Speaker 5: his name was Mike, Is that right?
- 6:55Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what I heard his partner call him. He's
- 6:57Speaker 2: kind of a short guy, like thirty five, I've been
- 7:00Speaker 2: six on the fat side, black hair.
- 7:02Speaker 7: Mike Filmer.
- 7:03Speaker 2: No, yeah, we kind of knowing him, thought he might
- 7:05Speaker 2: figure in.
- 7:05Speaker 6: I'm not about the size of a day. That all
- 7:07Speaker 6: you heard.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Yeah, that's about it.
- 7:09Speaker 6: Friday.
- 7:10Speaker 2: As soon as he finished the phone, car and his
- 7:11Speaker 2: partner left, I finished my beer.
- 7:13Speaker 6: And left too.
- 7:13Speaker 2: I had to couldn't ford another one.
- 7:15Speaker 6: Really tough these days.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, thanks a lot, Dave, really appreciate it. Well,
- 7:18Speaker 2: don't mention it. You've always done all right by me,
- 7:21Speaker 2: though not sure. Tasted great, still hungry, but I feel
- 7:25Speaker 2: I could take on a three inch stick.
- 7:27Speaker 6: I'm sorry things aren't better for you, Dave. How about
- 7:31Speaker 6: a ten Spottle that helped you.
- 7:32Speaker 2: In Yeah, sure, will Friddy, thanks a lot. I really
- 7:35Speaker 2: can use it.
- 7:35Speaker 6: I'm glad to help you. You're always helping us.
- 7:38Speaker 2: You sure make it nice. I mean you make it nice.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Kneasy on, I guy, what do you mean? Well, it's
- 7:42Speaker 2: always there first. I never have to come right out
- 7:44Speaker 2: and as good though. You always get the pitch, don't you.
- 7:53Speaker 5: Almost a month before we had begun receiving complaints about
- 7:56Speaker 5: a newly established gambling ring which had set up operations
- 7:59Speaker 5: in the city. Of the first few complaints, we succeeded
- 8:01Speaker 5: in identifying some of the men involved in the ring,
- 8:04Speaker 5: and also some of the places they frequented. The nature
- 8:06Speaker 5: of most of the complaints against them was such that
- 8:08Speaker 5: we knew we were dealing with a well.
- 8:10Speaker 6: Organized criminal element.
- 8:12Speaker 5: Even if a player happened to win at one of
- 8:13Speaker 5: the games, after he left the location.
- 8:15Speaker 6: He was beaten and robbed.
- 8:17Speaker 5: Despite the fact that we had some of the suspects identified,
- 8:20Speaker 5: we still lacked sufficient evidence to prosecute them successfully. The
- 8:24Speaker 5: various victims either would not or could not identify the suspects.
- 8:28Speaker 5: We knew the gang was running three or four games
- 8:30Speaker 5: a week, each one of them at a different location,
- 8:32Speaker 5: each one of them at a different time. In the trade,
- 8:35Speaker 5: that's known as a floating game. After we left our informant,
- 8:38Speaker 5: Dave Carter, we headed back to the office and briefed
- 8:40Speaker 5: Lieutenant Bingham. That afternoon, we checked the address on Gibbons
- 8:43Speaker 5: Avenue and found it to be a vacant store building
- 8:45Speaker 5: with a Florent sign in the window. There was an
- 8:48Speaker 5: entrance in front and one in the rear, windows along
- 8:51Speaker 5: both sides of the building, and a plasterboard partition dividing
- 8:53Speaker 5: the inside of the.
- 8:54Speaker 6: Store into two parts. The place was deserted.
- 8:57Speaker 5: At ten o'clock that night, Bill Lockwood and izedaked out
- 9:00Speaker 5: in our car down the street from the store. Sergeant
- 9:02Speaker 5: Fred Taylor and Jack Matthews were staked out in their
- 9:05Speaker 5: car from another point of observation. We were in constant
- 9:08Speaker 5: touch with each other by three way radio. Ten thirty
- 9:11Speaker 5: eleven PM, eleven.
- 9:13Speaker 7: Thirty one K eighty seven to one K.
- 9:18Speaker 5: Eighty Come in, one K to one K eighty seven,
- 9:20Speaker 5: Go ahead, Joe.
- 9:21Speaker 7: Did you notice the lights come on on the back
- 9:23Speaker 7: of the store a minute ago?
- 9:24Speaker 6: Yeah, two men.
- 9:25Speaker 5: They went in the back way, parked their car just
- 9:27Speaker 5: down the street from us here.
- 9:28Speaker 6: Did you see anything else?
- 9:30Speaker 3: Car just pulled up down the street from us.
- 9:32Speaker 7: Two men getting out heading for the store. Shoe just
- 9:34Speaker 7: a minute.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Yeah, they're going that way.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I see they're going around the back.
- 9:39Speaker 4: Joe.
- 9:40Speaker 7: Uh, looks like it's going to pay off. Let's sit
- 9:42Speaker 7: on in a while. KMA three sixty seven.
- 9:47Speaker 6: We waited. Eleven forty five.
- 9:49Speaker 5: A blue pickup truck pulled up and stopped a short
- 9:51Speaker 5: way from the front entrance to the store. We saw
- 9:54Speaker 5: two men get out and go around to the back
- 9:56Speaker 5: of the truck and unload half a dozen large boxes,
- 9:58Speaker 5: which they carried around to the rear entrance of the
- 10:00Speaker 5: One of the men came back, got in the cab
- 10:02Speaker 5: with a truck, and sat there.
- 10:04Speaker 6: Midnight twelve fifteen am.
- 10:07Speaker 5: Over a period of half an hour, we watched eighteen
- 10:09Speaker 5: persons arrive from different directions and enter the store from
- 10:11Speaker 5: the rear. Twelve thirty one am. There were no new arrivals.
- 10:16Speaker 7: We waited one K eighty seven to one K eight.
- 10:19Speaker 6: Come in, one K eighty to one K eighty seven.
- 10:22Speaker 6: Go ahead.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Not much activity down here, Joe, looks like it pretty
- 10:25Speaker 2: well set.
- 10:26Speaker 5: What do you think, Yeah, I think we might as
- 10:28Speaker 5: well hit it same way we laid it out.
- 10:30Speaker 6: Huh.
- 10:30Speaker 5: Fred will wait until Matthews picks up the lookout a
- 10:33Speaker 5: man sitting in the truck, right.
- 10:35Speaker 8: Joe, Jack, you want to go ahead and drab and
- 10:37Speaker 8: go away.
- 10:41Speaker 7: He's got his way, Joe.
- 10:43Speaker 5: Okay, as soon as he picks him up, we meet
- 10:45Speaker 5: in front of the place, Bill and I'll take the front.
- 10:47Speaker 6: You cover the back.
- 10:48Speaker 7: You got that, okay, Joe? Oh hold on a minute,
- 10:51Speaker 7: will you?
- 10:53Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 10:53Speaker 7: Jack got him bringing him back to the car.
- 10:55Speaker 6: Okay, let's go Cama three to sixty seven. He got
- 10:59Speaker 6: the carking Bill, Yeah, what's going for.
- 11:05Speaker 1: You?
- 11:06Speaker 2: Figured that's the best way.
- 11:06Speaker 7: Joe too, was going in the front.
- 11:08Speaker 6: That's probably where the rush is gonna be.
- 11:09Speaker 5: When Fred goes through the back, they're sure to start
- 11:11Speaker 5: for the front.
- 11:13Speaker 8: Okay, Joe, Yeah, and Jack's got the lookout, narkill wait
- 11:15Speaker 8: for us a right now?
- 11:16Speaker 6: What do you think about this? Fred?
- 11:17Speaker 5: You go around and hit the back door, so as
- 11:19Speaker 5: they hear you inside, they'll probably start for the front.
- 11:21Speaker 6: We'll take care of him there.
- 11:22Speaker 7: It's a good idea. Give me half a minute to
- 11:24Speaker 7: get back there.
- 11:24Speaker 5: All right, to watch yourself, all right, Joe, let's go.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, they're still going ys to us.
- 11:36Speaker 5: Yeah, let's hold it right down, please, we're going to
- 11:38Speaker 5: rest now, all right there, come on, billets in it.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Shot Joe, come on, well, I can please off this.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Come on back against the wall, going out.
- 11:50Speaker 5: The windows, show bight, Brett, let's think. Get back against the.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Wall all here, alright, off over you get back to
- 11:55Speaker 2: what happen to read?
- 11:55Speaker 7: Right?
- 11:56Speaker 6: All right, mister with the rest. I'm on there, back
- 11:58Speaker 6: against the wall, all right.
- 11:59Speaker 2: I'm going.
- 12:00Speaker 7: What's the beef about?
- 12:01Speaker 2: Anyway?
- 12:01Speaker 8: Just a turn around.
- 12:02Speaker 5: Facing the wall, puts your hands against the wall.
- 12:04Speaker 7: What's the pitch anyway? Treat this like a bunch of thieves.
- 12:06Speaker 7: You just have a little fun.
- 12:07Speaker 6: No harm done, Joe, as you find Fred, what happened?
- 12:09Speaker 6: He's been shot?
- 12:10Speaker 1: Hurt bad?
- 12:10Speaker 7: Matthews in with him now, I'll call the ambulance. Get
- 12:12Speaker 7: some help on it.
- 12:13Speaker 2: All right, you too, and with the others back against
- 12:15Speaker 2: what's your beef? Sure? A big noise about nothing. We're
- 12:18Speaker 2: to play a little cars friendly games, just a dollar limit.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Nobody ever gets hurt. We're all friends.
- 12:22Speaker 5: Is that why you carry guns? One am the ambulance
- 12:29Speaker 5: arrived and Sergeant Fred Taylor was taken immediately to Georgia
- 12:32Speaker 5: Street Receiving Hospital in a critical condition. He'd been shot
- 12:35Speaker 5: twice through the upper portion of the chest. He'd been
- 12:38Speaker 5: unconscious from the time of the shooting. Who the assailant was.
- 12:41Speaker 5: We had no idea. The crime lab arrived at the
- 12:43Speaker 5: scene and began their preliminary investigation. Meantime, homicide officers had
- 12:48Speaker 5: arrived and all units in the area were assisting in
- 12:50Speaker 5: the investigation, making a house to house canvas and checking
- 12:53Speaker 5: all backyards, alleys, and unoccupied buildings for possible suspects in hiding.
- 12:58Speaker 5: Out of a total number of men president in the
- 13:00Speaker 5: store at the time of the shooting, Bill and I had.
- 13:02Speaker 6: Been able to detain nine of them.
- 13:04Speaker 5: The remainder had either scrambled outside windows or the rear
- 13:07Speaker 5: door and then apparently made their way over back fences.
- 13:10Speaker 5: The nine we did get were taken downtown for interrogation.
- 13:14Speaker 5: All of them had been searched, but no weapons had
- 13:16Speaker 5: been found. Bill Lockwood and I remained at the scene
- 13:18Speaker 5: assisting the homicide officers. Two five AM an additional four
- 13:22Speaker 5: men who had been present at the gambling game that
- 13:24Speaker 5: night were picked up in the area transported downtown and
- 13:27Speaker 5: held along with the other nine at homicide detail two
- 13:30Speaker 5: twenty am. Bill and I were called downtown to assist
- 13:33Speaker 5: in the questioning. We got nowhere where the first three
- 13:36Speaker 5: suspects was the same with the fourth.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Do you expect us to believe that, Mike, Well, that's
- 13:40Speaker 2: the truth out of anything about it now.
- 13:41Speaker 6: I looked like, let's put it on the table. Huh.
- 13:43Speaker 5: We listened to your line of chattered down at the
- 13:44Speaker 5: store when we made the pinch.
- 13:45Speaker 6: We heard it all. Now let's get out of fact.
- 13:46Speaker 2: I told you everything I know, no different than the
- 13:48Speaker 2: other guys you picked up. I heard there was going
- 13:50Speaker 2: to be a game tonight, so I came.
- 13:51Speaker 6: What did you come down with? How'd you get there?
- 13:52Speaker 2: I drove, came by myself.
- 13:54Speaker 7: Where'd you park your car? About two blocks away? A
- 13:55Speaker 7: little aallely there by.
- 13:56Speaker 6: Guess day, you're a liar, mister, and you know it. Well,
- 13:58Speaker 6: that's the truth, So help me.
- 13:59Speaker 2: If I knew there was it's going to be trouble,
- 14:00Speaker 2: wouldn't even have showed up. I play a few cards, sure,
- 14:02Speaker 2: I don't go in for every stuff, though I haven't
- 14:04Speaker 2: got anything to do with the game.
- 14:05Speaker 7: You're a liar, You can't say that.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Now you show me where I've lied. You tell me
- 14:09Speaker 2: we were stick out on that place tonight.
- 14:10Speaker 5: Mike.
- 14:10Speaker 6: It was a little past eleven forty five.
- 14:12Speaker 3: You drove up in a blue pickup truck.
- 14:13Speaker 7: Another man was with you.
- 14:14Speaker 6: You were driving.
- 14:15Speaker 7: Oh, no, you got it wrong.
- 14:15Speaker 5: No, we haven't got it wrong. You parked that truck
- 14:17Speaker 5: about ten yards down the street from the front of
- 14:19Speaker 5: the store. You got out first, the other man followed you.
- 14:21Speaker 5: You unloaded six large cartons from the truck, some of
- 14:23Speaker 5: the equipment we found on the store. You took it around,
- 14:25Speaker 5: backing into the rear door, didn't you.
- 14:26Speaker 2: You got it wrong. It wasn't me.
- 14:27Speaker 7: It couldn't have been me. Come off with Mike.
- 14:29Speaker 8: The man you were with, we've got him down the hall.
- 14:30Speaker 8: The other officers have talked to him. He gave him
- 14:32Speaker 8: the straight story.
- 14:32Speaker 2: I didn't come with any other guy. Now, when you
- 14:34Speaker 2: listen to me, I knew some of them there. I'll
- 14:36Speaker 2: admit that I came by mysel.
- 14:37Speaker 5: Listen to me, mister, You get this through your head.
- 14:39Speaker 5: Get it once and for all. This isn't a gambling
- 14:40Speaker 5: beef anymore. Somebody's been shot, he's been hurt, bad.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Well, that's not my fault. I didn't shoot him on
- 14:44Speaker 2: anything about it.
- 14:44Speaker 5: You no more than you're telling you lied about coming
- 14:46Speaker 5: here in that truck. We saw you something else. The
- 14:48Speaker 5: truck's been checked out, it's registered in your name. Now
- 14:50Speaker 5: you come up with an answer for that one fast.
- 14:51Speaker 7: Oh, I don't get it.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Maybe my truck is down there for this. I don't
- 14:53Speaker 2: know how it got there. You're in a jam, Mike.
- 14:55Speaker 7: This isn't any misdemeanor.
- 14:56Speaker 6: Wrap.
- 14:56Speaker 2: I think the sooner you realize that, the better it's
- 14:57Speaker 2: going to.
- 14:58Speaker 7: Be for you. You don't have to tell me it's serious.
- 15:00Speaker 5: I know that.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Now.
- 15:00Speaker 5: What do you want from me? And you know what
- 15:01Speaker 5: we want? You know the answers, and we want them.
- 15:03Speaker 5: You're part of that gambling set up.
- 15:04Speaker 6: We know that.
- 15:05Speaker 5: We know who was there tonight, everybody. We want the
- 15:06Speaker 5: names of every one of them. Now, either you got
- 15:08Speaker 5: the answer to that shooting or somebody in that crowd has.
- 15:10Speaker 5: We're gonna get the answer, Mike. Don't make any mistake
- 15:11Speaker 5: about it. We're gonna get it. Now.
- 15:12Speaker 2: What do I have to say to convince you you're
- 15:14Speaker 2: talking to the wrong guy? Not according to the man
- 15:16Speaker 2: they got down the Hall. I wanted a pickup truck
- 15:17Speaker 2: with you. He gave us the whole story.
- 15:18Speaker 7: You hired him to help you tonight. You were gonna
- 15:20Speaker 7: pay him twenty bucks.
- 15:21Speaker 2: He helped your hall the equipment to the store, and
- 15:22Speaker 2: he was supposed to be the lookout at the front door.
- 15:24Speaker 7: It tries in all the way.
- 15:25Speaker 6: How about it?
- 15:26Speaker 5: All right?
- 15:26Speaker 2: Now, you've been calling people lives huh. Well, he's the liar,
- 15:29Speaker 2: the whole lousy story. It is nothing but a lie.
- 15:31Speaker 6: All right, keep quiet, Friday talking.
- 15:35Speaker 5: Oh yes, yah, all right, yeah, yeah.
- 15:39Speaker 6: Thank you. Now you listen like here's a piece of advice.
- 15:44Speaker 6: You make up your mind.
- 15:45Speaker 2: How do you mean make up my mind? I'm trying
- 15:47Speaker 2: to cooperate. You don't believe me. I'm trying to help
- 15:49Speaker 2: you out every way I can. I'm only too glad
- 15:51Speaker 2: to give you a hand. I know you got a
- 15:52Speaker 2: tough job.
- 15:53Speaker 8: You got my child.
- 15:54Speaker 5: Don't you worry about us, mister from here and start
- 15:56Speaker 5: worrying about yourself.
- 15:57Speaker 6: You're going to do a lot of it.
- 15:58Speaker 7: I don't know what you're talking about.
- 15:59Speaker 6: That policeman died.
- 16:11Speaker 4: You are listening to drag met authentic stories of your
- 16:14Speaker 4: police force and action.
- 16:23Speaker 5: Tuesday, February tenth, five point thirty am. Sergeant Fred Taylor

- 16:41Speaker 5: his death. Unfortunately, he never regained consciousness five.
- 16:46Speaker 6: Forty five am.
- 16:47Speaker 5: While the investigation went on at the scene of the murder,
- 16:49Speaker 5: Bill Lockwood and I continued our interrogation of the suspect,
- 16:52Speaker 5: Mike Filmer. Another hour of questioning and he still refused
- 16:55Speaker 5: to tell us anything. We finally confronted him with a
- 16:58Speaker 5: man we'd seen him arrive with at the locate of
- 17:00Speaker 5: a gambling game earlier that morning. Another ten minutes of questioning,
- 17:03Speaker 5: and he finally broke down.
- 17:04Speaker 7: Why didn't you.
- 17:05Speaker 6: Tell us that?
- 17:05Speaker 7: To begin with? Who believe me? I wanted to I
- 17:07Speaker 7: was scared.
- 17:08Speaker 6: I was scared of death.
- 17:09Speaker 7: I never had anything like this happened.
- 17:10Speaker 6: To me before.
- 17:11Speaker 7: I didn't know what to do, I didn't.
- 17:12Speaker 6: What to say.
- 17:13Speaker 5: All right, this is a complete list of everybody you
- 17:14Speaker 5: saw there last night. Everybody was in that game.
- 17:17Speaker 6: Yeah, I think I covered it.
- 17:18Speaker 7: Let me see it right here yet? Uh yeah, yeah,
- 17:24Speaker 7: just about everybody.
- 17:24Speaker 2: These are the only addresses you've got, just these three here,
- 17:27Speaker 2: got it?
- 17:28Speaker 7: Now, I'm not lying.
- 17:28Speaker 6: I believe me.
- 17:29Speaker 7: Tho are the only ones I know.
- 17:30Speaker 5: All right, So you had a hand in the game.
- 17:32Speaker 5: He brought in the equipment, you were working for the house.
- 17:34Speaker 7: That's right.
- 17:35Speaker 6: Then, who's the boss? Mic? Who's running the game? What
- 17:38Speaker 6: about it?
- 17:38Speaker 7: Who's running?
- 17:39Speaker 2: Look, I've told you everybody that was there, everybody. He
- 17:42Speaker 2: wasn't there that night. He couldn't have had anything to
- 17:44Speaker 2: do it.
- 17:44Speaker 5: Like, we didn't ask you that. We asked you who
- 17:46Speaker 5: the boss is? What's his name?
- 17:48Speaker 6: How about it? If we want his name?
- 17:50Speaker 2: But I told you he wasn't there last night. If
- 17:51Speaker 2: he wasn't there, he couldn't have had anything to do
- 17:53Speaker 2: with it. Look, he's a nice guy. He doesn't want
- 17:55Speaker 2: trouble anymore than I do.
- 17:56Speaker 7: He couldn't tell you.
- 17:56Speaker 5: Let us figure that out. Well, you know who's the boss, Mike?
- 17:59Speaker 6: Does it have to be?
- 18:00Speaker 7: Is that important?
- 18:00Speaker 6: We wouldn't be asking you who is he?
- 18:03Speaker 8: George Delano? Now that's all I know about him is name.
- 18:05Speaker 8: How does he spell his last name?
- 18:07Speaker 6: What do he look like?
- 18:08Speaker 7: Well? I guess it's the el ay.
- 18:11Speaker 2: No, I never saw him write it down though I've
- 18:14Speaker 2: only known him about a month.
- 18:15Speaker 6: Maybe five weeks.
- 18:15Speaker 2: What's his description when he's taller than I am?
- 18:18Speaker 8: About five feet ten eleven, maybe dark hair, a little
- 18:21Speaker 8: bit on the heavy side like me.
- 18:23Speaker 2: I guess, man, about forty five fifty.
- 18:25Speaker 6: Where does he live? Where do we find him?
- 18:26Speaker 8: I don't know where he lives, some hotel downtown. I
- 18:28Speaker 8: think the only times I ever met him.
- 18:30Speaker 6: Was at the bar? Which bar?
- 18:31Speaker 8: Where about south end of town, down on Vermont. I
- 18:34Speaker 8: don't know the address, but I can point it out
- 18:36Speaker 8: to you. It's a couple of doors down from the
- 18:37Speaker 8: big bowling alley, right.
- 18:38Speaker 7: Across from a theater. Women's dress shop next door.
- 18:40Speaker 6: Yeah, that's right, that's your place.
- 18:41Speaker 7: The only place I've ever seen him.
- 18:43Speaker 2: He always calls me at home, tells you where to
- 18:44Speaker 2: meet him.
- 18:45Speaker 5: You mean to say, you've been working for this Delano
- 18:46Speaker 5: and you don't even know where he lives.
- 18:47Speaker 7: Well, I don't know what else to tell you.
- 18:49Speaker 2: I'm squaring with you. I really don't know.
- 18:52Speaker 6: Friday talk to him. Yeah, I'll be right back. Now,
- 18:59Speaker 6: what do you got to saying?
- 19:00Speaker 8: Charlie Hart and I just got back and placed down
- 19:02Speaker 8: on Gibbons Avenue the store.
- 19:04Speaker 6: You know, don't you'd like to know?
- 19:05Speaker 7: We found a gun in the back the place, hitting
- 19:07Speaker 7: under a lumber pile.
- 19:08Speaker 6: All right, to check it out?
- 19:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I ran through a gun record to tragedy.
- 19:11Speaker 7: What's the name? George Delano?
- 19:16Speaker 5: Seven thirty eight am. With the new lead on the
- 19:19Speaker 5: alleged boss of the gambling ring, George Delano, we interrupted
- 19:22Speaker 5: our questioning of the suspect, Mike Filmer. We took him
- 19:25Speaker 5: down the hall back to the homicide squadron to be
- 19:27Speaker 5: held for further interrogation. We checked Delano through R and I,
- 19:30Speaker 5: but we had no record on him. Then, along with
- 19:33Speaker 5: Sergeant Sam Flowers and Charlie Hart up Homicide, we drove
- 19:36Speaker 5: out to the address of George Delano as listed in
- 19:38Speaker 5: the gun registration files. There was a small cottage in
- 19:42Speaker 5: the Wheelshire area. The woman who answered the door identified
- 19:45Speaker 5: herself as Missus George Delano, the suspect's wife. She called
- 19:48Speaker 5: her husband to the door. We identified ourselves, briefed him
- 19:51Speaker 5: on the reason for our visit and told him we
- 19:53Speaker 5: wanted to talk to him downtown. He appeared cooperative, more
- 19:56Speaker 5: than willing to come along. He got dressed, We drove
- 19:59Speaker 5: him back to the city Hall took him to the
- 20:00Speaker 5: interrogation room. He was well dressed and, in his own way,
- 20:04Speaker 5: well mannered. After being told of the situation, he admitted
- 20:07Speaker 5: freely that he'd been operating games at different locations throughout
- 20:10Speaker 5: the city for the past month and a half. He
- 20:12Speaker 5: told us that he'd employed Mike Filmer to assist him
- 20:14Speaker 5: in his operations, and he also admitted ownership of the.
- 20:16Speaker 6: Gun found near the murder scene.
- 20:18Speaker 5: The gun had since been checked by RUSS Camp and
- 20:20Speaker 5: Ballistics and found to be the murder weapon.
- 20:22Speaker 7: Well, yes, it's my gun, but I like to explain
- 20:24Speaker 7: a little bit about it.
- 20:25Speaker 8: What's that, Delna, Well, number one, I admit I'm a gambler,
- 20:27Speaker 8: that's my racket. I'm new to Los Angeles. I admit
- 20:30Speaker 8: I've been working a few games, but I know murderer.
- 20:32Speaker 8: I wouldn't have any part if you said you were
- 20:33Speaker 8: gonna explain about the gun, and I would about it.
- 20:35Speaker 7: Now, look, I'd like to fill you in on everything.
- 20:36Speaker 6: Officers.
- 20:37Speaker 7: I got nothing to hide from you. I'll tell you everything.
- 20:39Speaker 6: Now.
- 20:40Speaker 8: When I first came to this town, as I say,
- 20:41Speaker 8: it's been about five six weeks, I made a few
- 20:43Speaker 8: connections and I started running these games. For the first
- 20:46Speaker 8: couple of weeks, everything went fine, no beats, everything was fine.
- 20:49Speaker 7: All I had to do is dodge you feller and
- 20:51Speaker 7: the trouble started him.
- 20:52Speaker 8: How do you mean you mind if I have a
- 20:53Speaker 8: smoke a little look carefully, No, nothing. I want to
- 20:58Speaker 8: fill you in from the start. I'man to clear this
- 21:00Speaker 8: whole thing up.
- 21:01Speaker 6: Yeah that's what you said.
- 21:02Speaker 8: Yeah, well, as I told you. For a few weeks,
- 21:05Speaker 8: everything was fine. Then one night, when the game was
- 21:08Speaker 8: just about ready to break, a couple of punks came in,
- 21:10Speaker 8: held us up.
- 21:11Speaker 7: They cleaned everybody in the place, made a big haul.
- 21:13Speaker 6: When was this word?
- 21:14Speaker 8: It happened down on the east side. Bunks took us for everything.
- 21:17Speaker 6: You know it is.
- 21:18Speaker 8: Couldn't make a report to you. I just had to
- 21:19Speaker 8: take it cover the losses myself. Yeah, now, how about
- 21:22Speaker 8: that gun, I'm coming to it. This thing happens and
- 21:24Speaker 8: I figured that's the end of it, But no, a
- 21:26Speaker 8: couple of nights later they hit again. I still can't squawk.
- 21:28Speaker 8: I have to stand the losses. Another couple of nights
- 21:30Speaker 8: they knock us over again. Couldn't do a thing about
- 21:32Speaker 8: it more.
- 21:32Speaker 6: I we've heard all that. That's your racket. You can
- 21:34Speaker 6: expect it.
- 21:35Speaker 5: All we want to know is about that gun. Now,
- 21:36Speaker 5: what's your story.
- 21:37Speaker 8: I told you I was coming to it. After the
- 21:39Speaker 8: third time they reached us, I hired a guard, somebody
- 21:41Speaker 8: stand watch outside in case of another stick up.
- 21:43Speaker 7: The only thing I could do.
- 21:44Speaker 8: Yeah, well, so I hired.
- 21:45Speaker 7: Some guy to stand guard on the games. Wanted my
- 21:48Speaker 7: gun in case there was any trouble, and.
- 21:49Speaker 6: You told them to use it in case there was struggle.
- 21:51Speaker 7: Yeah, that's right.
- 21:52Speaker 5: How about right from the police you told me to
- 21:53Speaker 5: use it for that.
- 21:54Speaker 8: No, no, matter of fact, I made a point of
- 21:55Speaker 8: telling him about that. All he was supposed to use
- 21:57Speaker 8: the gun for was just to fire it up in
- 21:59Speaker 8: the air, maybe scare those punks, often warned the guys
- 22:01Speaker 8: inside at the same time.
- 22:02Speaker 5: We'll talk about that later, Delana. We want to know
- 22:04Speaker 5: who had the gun last night.
- 22:05Speaker 7: Well, the guard did. I told you. I loaned him
- 22:07Speaker 7: the gun.
- 22:07Speaker 6: Who's the guard?
- 22:08Speaker 7: What's his name? Where do we find him? His name's Jake.
- 22:10Speaker 7: A friend of mine got him for me see Jake Gleason.
- 22:13Speaker 7: Of course he lived. I couldn't tell you that. I
- 22:15Speaker 7: don't know.
- 22:15Speaker 8: I always contacted him at a bar in South for
- 22:17Speaker 8: a month place I go quite a bit. Yeah, a
- 22:20Speaker 8: little too early to.
- 22:20Speaker 7: Catch him there.
- 22:21Speaker 6: Now, what do you know about this glease of what's
- 22:22Speaker 6: he look like?
- 22:23Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 22:24Speaker 7: I haven't seen him much.
- 22:25Speaker 8: I guess you said about thirty two thirty three and
- 22:27Speaker 8: light brown hair called x con. I think either he
- 22:31Speaker 8: told me or somebody told me the time.
- 22:32Speaker 5: You knew he was an ex con and you gave
- 22:34Speaker 5: him your gun.
- 22:34Speaker 8: Well, yeah, but I didn't tell him to shoot anybody.
- 22:36Speaker 8: I made a point of telling him that dumb jerk,
- 22:38Speaker 8: especially shooting a cop. All he was supposed to do
- 22:40Speaker 8: is fire up in the air. Those punks came around
- 22:42Speaker 8: scare him away to help me. That's the only time
- 22:44Speaker 8: he was supposed to use the gun.
- 22:45Speaker 7: I told him. I'm much of a story, Delena. Can
- 22:47Speaker 7: you prove and.
- 22:47Speaker 8: Sure I can prove it. You can ask Mike Mike
- 22:49Speaker 8: Filmer and tell you the same thing. You can ask
- 22:51Speaker 8: Leeson himself.
- 22:53Speaker 6: Jerk.
- 22:53Speaker 7: Mike said he wasn't too sharp a little punch. He
- 22:55Speaker 7: wasn't quite right in my head?
- 22:56Speaker 6: What's that?
- 22:57Speaker 7: I said? He was a little punchy. He wasn't quite
- 22:59Speaker 7: right in my head?
- 23:00Speaker 5: You mean you met him in a bar. You didn't
- 23:01Speaker 5: know anything about his background. You knew he was an
- 23:03Speaker 5: ex con you had an idea wasn't too sharp. Maybe
- 23:05Speaker 5: he wasn't all there?
- 23:06Speaker 6: Is that right? Yeah? That's about it?
- 23:07Speaker 5: And you put this man in a spot where you
- 23:09Speaker 5: knew he'd be in trouble, and then you gave him
- 23:10Speaker 5: a gun?
- 23:11Speaker 6: Is that right? How about it? Delano?
- 23:13Speaker 7: What are you looking at me for? I told the
- 23:15Speaker 7: dun jerk what to do.
- 23:16Speaker 8: I didn't count to shoot anybody, punchdrunk, bloemn truth. I
- 23:19Speaker 8: didn't have a thing to do with it. I hired
- 23:21Speaker 8: the guy, that's all. It's not my fault. Are you
- 23:24Speaker 8: looking at I wasn't even there. I didn't even know
- 23:25Speaker 8: about it. I didn't kill that cock, didn't you?
- 23:33Speaker 5: Nine twenty three am. We continued questioning George Delano. He
- 23:36Speaker 5: told us that he'd instructed Jake Gleason, the ex convict,
- 23:39Speaker 5: to stand guard at the rear of the store where
- 23:41Speaker 5: the gambling games were held.
- 23:43Speaker 6: He insisted that his instructions to Gleason were that.
- 23:45Speaker 5: If he had to fire the gun at all, he
- 23:47Speaker 5: was to fire it in the air and then only
- 23:49Speaker 5: as a warning signal in case of robbery attempt. Deleno
- 23:52Speaker 5: was detained by homicide officers pending further investigation. We checked
- 23:56Speaker 5: the name and description of Jake Gleason through on I
- 23:58Speaker 5: and found his record in mugshot. We showed the mug
- 24:01Speaker 5: to Delano and he identified it. Gleason's record showed him
- 24:04Speaker 5: to be on active parole. Ten thirty am, we contacted
- 24:08Speaker 5: the parole office. They gave us his address and villa
- 24:10Speaker 5: and I checked it out a second.
- 24:11Speaker 6: Rate hotel on South Flower Street.
- 24:13Speaker 5: The manager told us Gleason had left the hotel about
- 24:16Speaker 5: seven forty five that morning and that he was not
- 24:17Speaker 5: expected back until after six o'clock that night. He also
- 24:21Speaker 5: told us there was a chance we might locate him
- 24:22Speaker 5: in one of the bars around the neighborhood. Ten forty five,
- 24:26Speaker 5: we started making the rounds of the bars in the
- 24:28Speaker 5: immediate vicinity. The third place we stopped at was practically deserted.
- 24:31Speaker 5: A jukebox at the back of the place was turned
- 24:33Speaker 5: up the full volume. There was a smell of disinfectant
- 24:36Speaker 5: whiskey and stale perfume. There was one customer drinking at
- 24:39Speaker 5: the far end of the bar.
- 24:40Speaker 6: It was Gleason. Stand up police officers, HI shake him
- 24:49Speaker 6: down hill.
- 24:52Speaker 5: Queen Joe hands him back to Yeah, I want to
- 24:55Speaker 5: kill that joke Boxville.
- 24:56Speaker 6: Yeah, all right, you know why we want you.
- 25:00Speaker 7: Well, there wasn't any sense running.
- 25:02Speaker 6: I knew you'd be around. All right, let's go.
- 25:04Speaker 8: Could you do me a favor? I mean, wait a minute,
- 25:06Speaker 8: just a minute. It's like to tell you I didn't
- 25:08Speaker 8: mean it. I guess it's my own fault.
- 25:10Speaker 7: I shot him. I shouldn't have had the gun, shouldn't
- 25:12Speaker 7: have taken the job. I shot him. I didn't mean it,
- 25:14Speaker 7: all right, Come on, there.
- 25:15Speaker 8: Ought to be away, don't you think I mean there
- 25:17Speaker 8: really ought to be away.
- 25:18Speaker 6: What's that?
- 25:19Speaker 8: I didn't mean it, No reason to kill him. I
- 25:21Speaker 8: didn't even know him. I just keep thinking there was
- 25:24Speaker 8: only a way, if I could take it back again,
- 25:26Speaker 8: you know, yeah, I mean, if I could go back
- 25:27Speaker 8: and change it, make it all different.
- 25:30Speaker 7: I mean, right from the beginning, I wouldn't even look
- 25:31Speaker 7: at the gun. I'd change everything better.
- 25:33Speaker 6: I would.
- 25:34Speaker 7: I wouldn't even look at a gun.
- 25:35Speaker 8: Only had the chance, you know, second chance there ought
- 25:38Speaker 8: to be away second chance.
- 25:40Speaker 6: He started with a gun.
- 25:41Speaker 8: Jay, Yeah, you never had a first one.
- 25:50Speaker 3: The story you have just heard was true. The names
- 25:53Speaker 3: were changed to protect the innocent.
- 25:55Speaker 4: On May twenty, second trial was held in Superior Court,
- 25:58Speaker 4: Department eighty eight, City in County of Los Angeles, State
- 26:01Speaker 4: of California.
- 26:01Speaker 7: In a moment the results of that trial.
- 26:12Speaker 4: Jacob Allan Gleason was tried and convicted of murder in
- 26:15Speaker 4: the first degree and was sentenced to a life term
- 26:17Speaker 4: in the state penitentiary. George Delano, Mike Filmer, and all
- 26:20Speaker 4: other principles were found guilty of violating the Municipal Code
- 26:23Speaker 4: forty three point zero one gambling and received sentences as
- 26:27Speaker 4: prescribed by law. George Delano and Mike Filmer were sentenced
- 26:30Speaker 4: to six month terms in the county jail. Others received
- 26:34Speaker 4: proportionate sentences.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Ladies and gentlemen, Mister James Fox, Director on the Executive
- 26:40Speaker 3: Board of the Mystery Writers of America. Tonight, it is
- 26:42Speaker 3: with a great deal of pleasure that I am, speaking
- 26:43Speaker 3: for the entire membership of the Mystery Writers of America
- 26:46Speaker 3: in all fields, present the Edgar Allan Poe Award for
- 26:49Speaker 3: the second consecutive year for the finest radio presentation as
- 26:52Speaker 3: his class Dragnet. To you, Jack Webb and your fine
- 26:56Speaker 3: group of technicians responsible for the overall production of Dragnet
- 27:00Speaker 3: present their statuette of one of them more at holds
- 27:01Speaker 3: in the field of mystery, Edgar Allan Poe.
- 27:04Speaker 5: Thank you very much, mister Fox, and thanks also the
- 27:06Speaker 5: membership of the Mystery Writers.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Of America and standing by to receive his award also
- 27:10Speaker 3: for the second consecutive year as the outstanding radio writer
- 27:13Speaker 3: in his field and for the consistent job he does
- 27:16Speaker 3: on Dragnet.
- 27:16Speaker 6: Jim Mosar, here's your statuette. Thank you very much, mister Fox.
- 27:21Speaker 6: Ladies and gentlemen.
- 27:21Speaker 5: It's seldom, indeed, when the writer of any radio show
- 27:24Speaker 5: receives his just and due acclaim. So were the greatest
- 27:27Speaker 5: of pleasure that we accept the Edgar Allan Poe Awards,
- 27:29Speaker 5: And as it is primarily a writer's award, all of
- 27:32Speaker 5: us who have.
- 27:32Speaker 6: Had a hand in bringing Gragnet into your.
- 27:34Speaker 5: Homes each week are proud of our writer, Jim Moser,
- 27:36Speaker 5: for as anyone in radio will readily go on record
- 27:38Speaker 5: by saying and knowing that you're only as good as
- 27:41Speaker 5: the scripture read, So it's with deep gratitude that we
- 27:43Speaker 5: receive the MWA Award, which best illustrates and confirms the
- 27:46Speaker 5: high opinion which we all hold of our writer, Jim Moser.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Thank you, Jack, and I'd like to express my special
- 27:52Speaker 2: appreciation to our technical advisers from the Los Angeles Police Department,
- 27:56Speaker 2: without whom none of this would be possible.
- 28:07Speaker 4: You have just heard Dragnet, a series of authentic cases
- 28:10Speaker 4: from official files. Technical advice comes from the Office of
- 28:13Speaker 4: Chief of Police W. H. Parker, Los Angeles Police Department
- 28:16Speaker 4: Technical advisors Captain Jack Donahoe, Sergeant Marty Winn, Sergeant Vans Braser.
- 28:21Speaker 4: Heard tonight were Martin Milner, Eddie Firestone with Connor. Script
- 28:25Speaker 4: by Jim Moser, music by Walter Schumann. Hell give me speaking.
- 28:36Speaker 3: Now. It's counter Spy on NBC.
- 28:46Speaker 1: Welcome back, the last Bill Walkward episode and doesn't actually
- 28:52Speaker 1: get to do a whole lot. The episode was a
- 28:55Speaker 1: reminder of the fact that the police can potential of
- 29:02Speaker 1: death even on the most unlikely of calls, and certainly
- 29:07Speaker 1: enforcing a municipal anti gambling ordinance wasn't a point where
- 29:15Speaker 1: you would expect someone to shoot a police officer, but
- 29:20Speaker 1: it happened. George Gleeson is yet another one of those
- 29:24Speaker 1: criminals who'd have been charged a lot more seriously today.
- 29:32Speaker 1: He handed a loaded handgun to a felon who he
- 29:38Speaker 1: could tell was not right in the head. Now, because
- 29:42Speaker 1: he had given explicit orders against this sort of thing
- 29:45Speaker 1: and hadn't directed any violence against police officers, then all
- 29:51Speaker 1: they could charge him with was the gambling charge and
- 29:55Speaker 1: nothing related to the murder. Today it wouldn't be the
- 29:59Speaker 1: question of whether he'd be facing felony charges but which once.
- 30:05Speaker 1: But Friday did the best you could do in nineteen
- 30:08Speaker 1: fifty two and made the case in a very Joe
- 30:13Speaker 1: Friday way that whatever the law says, he was more
- 30:18Speaker 1: like culpable. And that's a key part of dragnet. They don't,
- 30:23Speaker 1: as a rule, imagine heftier sentences or more serious charges
- 30:31Speaker 1: than are warranted under existing laws. Rather, you have defendants
- 30:37Speaker 1: who are punished in accordance with the laws on the books.
- 30:42Speaker 1: And if viewers feel a sentence was either too lenient
- 30:48Speaker 1: or too strict, they can't really blame the writers, but
- 30:52Speaker 1: they can't ask their elective representatives to make changes. We
- 30:56Speaker 1: have an email from Carissa who writes good morning Adam.
- 31:01Speaker 1: The dragoned episode The Big Elevator reminded me of a
- 31:04Speaker 1: Johony Dollar episode from a few months ago where Johnnie's
- 31:07Speaker 1: friend was dying of what they thought was a severe ulcer.
- 31:11Speaker 1: You pointed out at the time that the nineteen fifties
- 31:14Speaker 1: approach to medical emergencies left a lot to be desired.
- 31:19Speaker 1: I'd a similar thought about the dead woman in The
- 31:22Speaker 1: Big Elevator today. If a person started having severe headaches,
- 31:26Speaker 1: personality changes, etc. Doctors would probably eventually order tests that
- 31:30Speaker 1: would find the tumor before the woman dropped dead. Even today,
- 31:35Speaker 1: some brain tumors are untreatable, but at least the husband
- 31:39Speaker 1: would have known that the drinking and party partying were
- 31:42Speaker 1: due to a medical condition outside his wife's control. Love
- 31:47Speaker 1: the show and thanks for all your hard work. Well
- 31:51Speaker 1: thanks so much. I appreciate the comment, and certainly there
- 31:56Speaker 1: would be more potential for early detective today with those
- 32:02Speaker 1: sort of medical treatments, though it depends on the person
- 32:07Speaker 1: having access to medical care, which can sometimes be a challenge,
- 32:13Speaker 1: and also taking the potential symptoms seriously and having a
- 32:20Speaker 1: sort of support system that encourages you. You know, you
- 32:24Speaker 1: got a friend to say, you know, you really ought
- 32:26Speaker 1: to go get that checked out. And I don't think
- 32:29Speaker 1: she ran with that type of crowd. Now in terms
- 32:33Speaker 1: of the drinking and partying. When I went back and
- 32:38Speaker 1: listened to what the husband had to say, and what
- 32:41Speaker 1: he indicated was that this was a problem from the
- 32:46Speaker 1: get go and that she didn't even know how to
- 32:50Speaker 1: be a wife, that doesn't indicate to me that anything
- 32:55Speaker 1: had changed in terms of the drinking and partying. Now.
- 32:59Speaker 1: The core did conclude that the tumor was causing her
- 33:04Speaker 1: a lot of pain and that may have led her
- 33:08Speaker 1: to drink even more in order to self medicate, But
- 33:14Speaker 1: I wouldn't read it as the tumor causing personality change,
- 33:20Speaker 1: at least not in this instance from what we have
- 33:23Speaker 1: in the script. But thanks so much. I appreciate the email.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Now it's time to thank our Patreon supporter of the day.
