- 0:19Speaker 3: evaluate situations with me and lead me towards success.
- 0:23Speaker 4: We're not adults, so just just be there and like, listen.
- 0:28Speaker 5: I just want someone to yat too, And I just
- 0:31Speaker 5: feel like I'll be fine.

- 1:24Speaker 5: Chip Howard Sports Talk here on a Thursday afternoon, right
- 1:29Speaker 5: here on the zone eleven fifty AM, ninety three point
- 1:32Speaker 5: seven FM. I'm Caleb Rapley filling in once again for Chip,
- 1:37Speaker 5: third time this week. I know that y'all are tired
- 1:39Speaker 5: of hearing me yep, but you're gonna have to endure
- 1:42Speaker 5: it one more time this week, actually two more times
- 1:45Speaker 5: this week. I already lied. The show just started, and
- 1:47Speaker 5: I'm already not telling you the truth. Tomorrow it'll be
- 1:50Speaker 5: me and Ryan in here. Riley is out. We've got
- 1:54Speaker 5: a lot on the schedule today. First segment here we
- 1:59Speaker 5: will be going over some of the biggest headlines in
- 2:02Speaker 5: the sports world. In the next segment, we're going to
- 2:05Speaker 5: be hearing from the head coach of the Texas Longhorns
- 2:10Speaker 5: what he had to say at SEC Media Day's Steve Sarakshan.
- 2:15Speaker 5: And then at four point thirty live in the studio
- 2:18Speaker 5: with me, I'm going to have the play by play
- 2:20Speaker 5: man for all Brass Valley Bombers games on the radio,
- 2:25Speaker 5: mister Andrew Rapsilver, he will be right here in the
- 2:28Speaker 5: studio with me at four thirty and then at five
- 2:32Speaker 5: o'clock another sec Media days listening, and it's a highly
- 2:38Speaker 5: anticipated one. LSU head coach Lane Kiffin, and I'm sure
- 2:42Speaker 5: that y'all have seen some highlights from that, but we're
- 2:45Speaker 5: going to be listening to it almost in full what
- 2:49Speaker 5: he had to say at the main podium, and then
- 2:52Speaker 5: in the for the rest of the second hour, I'm
- 2:54Speaker 5: gonna do some baseball talk, Astros sweep the Marlins, and
- 3:00Speaker 5: then I'm gonna get into how some aggis from the
- 3:06Speaker 5: MLB Draft a year ago are performing so far in
- 3:09Speaker 5: their minor league career. As you know, the MLB Draft
- 3:12Speaker 5: was a couple weeks ago now eight aggie players taken.
- 3:16Speaker 5: All but one ended up signing, So we're gonna be
- 3:19Speaker 5: looking at their signing bonuses and then looking at how
- 3:22Speaker 5: their predecessors from twenty twenty five are doing so far
- 3:25Speaker 5: in their careers. But right now, first headline, we've got
- 3:30Speaker 5: Texas A and M men's basketball. Buckeyball has announced their
- 3:33Speaker 5: official twenty twenty six non conference schedule, starting off with
- 3:39Speaker 5: an exhibition game at SMU October twenty fifth, and then
- 3:46Speaker 5: five games in a row at Ried Arena, mostly non
- 3:50Speaker 5: Power five schools. The only Power five school in those
- 3:54Speaker 5: first five games is going to be Oklahoma State on
- 3:58Speaker 5: November twelfth. That is a big one. I think that
- 4:02Speaker 5: was an overtime loss. I know we lost to them
- 4:06Speaker 5: last year. I think it was. It might not have
- 4:07Speaker 5: been overtime. I think that was SMU actually, But we
- 4:10Speaker 5: will be welcoming the Cowboys to Rid Arena on November twelfth.
- 4:14Speaker 5: A notable road game early in the year. November nineteenth,
- 4:18Speaker 5: we're going to Fort Worth to take on the TCU
- 4:21Speaker 5: horn Frogs, and then the Aggies will be going to
- 4:26Speaker 5: the Bahamas for the Battle for Atlantis, and I believe
- 4:29Speaker 5: the two teams that are taking on are Xavier and Marquette.
- 4:34Speaker 5: December second, the sec ACC Challenge here at Ried Arena
- 4:39Speaker 5: against Stanford. December twelfth, a neutral site game at the
- 4:44Speaker 5: Toyota Center in Houston against Florida State after we played
- 4:48Speaker 5: them at a neutral site in Florida last year. And
- 4:52Speaker 5: the last two non con games December twenty first and
- 4:55Speaker 5: December twenty ninth, both at home against North Florida and
- 4:59Speaker 5: Prairie View A And so get excited for basketball. It'll
- 5:03Speaker 5: be here before you know it. SEC Media Days just
- 5:07Speaker 5: wrapped up Day four. We heard from Like I said,
- 5:12Speaker 5: Lane Kiffin led off the day and set a new record.
- 5:18Speaker 5: And you may be saying, how do you set a
- 5:19Speaker 5: record at SEC Media Days? Lane Kiffin now holds the
- 5:26Speaker 5: record for most number of words in a coach's opening
- 5:30Speaker 5: statement at SEC Media Days with two thousand, eight hundred
- 5:34Speaker 5: and seven words. I think it was about sixteen minutes
- 5:38Speaker 5: of an opening statement to a press conference, and I
- 5:42Speaker 5: think Lane was just trying to talk as much as
- 5:45Speaker 5: he could, control the narrative as much as he could
- 5:47Speaker 5: before he had to answer any questions, and he did
- 5:50Speaker 5: just that. Now that begs the question, what is the
- 5:53Speaker 5: fewest number of words in a coach's opening statement at
- 5:57Speaker 5: SEC Media Days? Well, that was back in twenty twenty
- 5:59Speaker 5: two when the Pirate Mike Leach had the very fewest
- 6:07Speaker 5: number of words in a coach's opening statement with just
- 6:09Speaker 5: five words. What were those words? Following the Commissioner's introduction,
- 6:17Speaker 5: Michael Leach said, I appreciate that any questions and that
- 6:22Speaker 5: is exactly what we know and love from Mike Leach
- 6:25Speaker 5: Rest in peace, Pirate. Thanks Brett McMurphy on Twitter Brett
- 6:30Speaker 5: McMurphy of On three for sharing that tidbit. College football
- 6:35Speaker 5: quarterback tiers. According to a survey conducted by The Athletic,
- 6:40Speaker 5: they've broken the quarterback situations of every single FBS team
- 6:46Speaker 5: into seven tiers. In Tier one, we've got three SEC
- 6:50Speaker 5: teams Ole, Miss Texas and LSU Trinidad Chambless, Arch Manning
- 6:56Speaker 5: and Sam Levitt. The quarterbacks for those teams. Ohio State
- 7:02Speaker 5: and Notre Dame also in that tier, along with Oregon,
- 7:06Speaker 5: Oklahoma State, and Miami. Oklahoma State is a very interesting one.
- 7:10Speaker 5: Their starting quarterback this year is North Texas transfer Drew Mestemaker,
- 7:15Speaker 5: who transferred over from U and T along with his
- 7:19Speaker 5: coach Eric Morris. Really interesting. Interested to see how that
- 7:24Speaker 5: move goes for the Pokes in year one. In Tier two,
- 7:28Speaker 5: three more SEC teams, including the Georgia Bulldogs with Gunner Stockton,
- 7:34Speaker 5: the Oklahoma Sooners with John Mattier and your Texas A
- 7:37Speaker 5: and m Aggie's with Barcel Reid. In the second tier,
- 7:43Speaker 5: the next tier has three more SEC teams Auburn, South Carolina, Missouri,
- 7:48Speaker 5: and then there are five SEC teams in Tier four,
- 7:53Speaker 5: one SEC team in Tier five, and then the lowest
- 7:55Speaker 5: ranked SEC team all the way down in Tier six,
- 7:58Speaker 5: the Tennessee volunteers, who I believe have yet today a
- 8:02Speaker 5: starting quarterback. I think it's between George McIntyre, who's a
- 8:05Speaker 5: red shirt freshman, and then five star recruit faise On Brandon,
- 8:10Speaker 5: if I remember correctly, be really interesting to see which
- 8:14Speaker 5: one of those who wins that competition, and maybe an
- 8:19Speaker 5: underrated quarterback room for the volunteers we will see. If
- 8:22Speaker 5: you want to weigh in to the show have your
- 8:25Speaker 5: voice heard, be sure to text nine to seven nine
- 8:27Speaker 5: six nine three eleven point fifty and I will try
- 8:31Speaker 5: to get to that. If you have questions for Andrew Rapsilver,
- 8:35Speaker 5: the Bombers play by play broadcaster, that's at four thirty,
- 8:39Speaker 5: be sure to text in for that. Caleb Brapley here
- 8:42Speaker 5: filling in for Chip Howard on Sports Talk Today. Some
- 8:46Speaker 5: sad news at NFL training camp. The Carolina Panthers are
- 8:51Speaker 5: losing second year outside linebacker and former Texas A and
- 8:56Speaker 5: m Aggie nick s Gorton to a torn ACL and
- 8:59Speaker 5: his right ee. S Gordon will be seeking a second opinion,
- 9:04Speaker 5: went down on a wet field late in practice today
- 9:08Speaker 5: and had his hand over his face as he was
- 9:12Speaker 5: led in a waiting cart, So it looked like it
- 9:16Speaker 5: was pretty bad just by the players and trainers body language.
- 9:19Speaker 5: S Gorton had a really solid rookie season for the
- 9:22Speaker 5: Panthers last year. He played in all seventeen games, starting
- 9:25Speaker 5: eight of those, finished the season with forty seven tackles
- 9:29Speaker 5: and five sacks. Ended up being a pretty key starter
- 9:33Speaker 5: for the Panthers, which were the fifteenth ranks defense in
- 9:37Speaker 5: the NFL last year. S Gorton was looking to continue
- 9:42Speaker 5: to build on that strong rookie season, but it's looking
- 9:45Speaker 5: like it's going to have to wait until twenty twenty seven.
- 9:48Speaker 5: We wish him the best. He is from Brian, Texas
- 9:52Speaker 5: for those of you who don't know, came home to
- 9:55Speaker 5: Texas A and M for his senior year of college
- 9:57Speaker 5: football and Michael mike elk first season as coach. It's
- 10:01Speaker 5: a lot of fun watching him play, for sure. More
- 10:05Speaker 5: NFL news. Fernando Mendoza, the number one overall pick from
- 10:09Speaker 5: this year's draft to the Las Vegas Raiders, has officially
- 10:13Speaker 5: signed his rookie contract, a four year, fifty seven point
- 10:18Speaker 5: two to seven million dollar fully guaranteed deal with a
- 10:21Speaker 5: fifth year option. So the Raiders have now signed all
- 10:25Speaker 5: ten of the players that they drafted, as they reported
- 10:28Speaker 5: for training camp today and then the veterans will arrive
- 10:33Speaker 5: five days from now July twenty eighth, and the first
- 10:36Speaker 5: training camp practice for the Raiders will take place on
- 10:39Speaker 5: the twenty ninth. With Fernando Mendoza now under contract, the
- 10:42Speaker 5: only first round pick that has not been signed yet
- 10:46Speaker 5: is Rams quarterback Ty Simpson. Fernando Mendoza is the first
- 10:52Speaker 5: time the Raiders have had a first overall pick since
- 10:56Speaker 5: JaMarcus Russell in two thousand and seven. So here's hoping
- 10:59Speaker 5: that for Nando Mendoza turns out a little better than
- 11:01Speaker 5: JaMarcus Russell, because that was not the most fun career
- 11:05Speaker 5: to watch. Texas high school football news. According to Carter Yates,
- 11:12Speaker 5: DCTF writer, th SCA Coaching School is going on this
- 11:19Speaker 5: week's same time as SEC Media Days, and the UIL
- 11:23Speaker 5: has apparently approved in concept a proposal to expand home
- 11:28Speaker 5: field advantage for the first round of the UIL playoffs
- 11:32Speaker 5: to Class four A and below. So for those of
- 11:35Speaker 5: y'all who don't know how high school football playoffs work.
- 11:38Speaker 5: For five A and six A schools, the biggest schools
- 11:41Speaker 5: in the state, the first round of the playoffs, the
- 11:44Speaker 5: higher seed is just the home team and you play
- 11:47Speaker 5: at that team stadium, similar to how the college football
- 11:49Speaker 5: playoff works, and then in the second round they go
- 11:53Speaker 5: to a neutral site. In class four A and below,
- 11:57Speaker 5: the small schools, they start playing neutral site games in
- 12:02Speaker 5: the first round. This is something changing that has been
- 12:06Speaker 5: something that has been pushed by coaches for a long
- 12:09Speaker 5: time now. The UIL plans to unveil a sample proposal
- 12:13Speaker 5: this October, with possibly implementing it starting in twenty twenty seven.
- 12:18Speaker 5: So good news for high school football playoffs. I think
- 12:21Speaker 5: that'll make for some better environments and some real home
- 12:25Speaker 5: field advantage, which is always fun to see. Now, this
- 12:30Speaker 5: is not technically a sports story. Technically it's a politics story,
- 12:35Speaker 5: so it really belongs on our sister station WTAW with
- 12:38Speaker 5: the news people. But former NFL kicker Jay Feely has
- 12:42Speaker 5: won the Republican primary for Arizona's first congressional district and
- 12:47Speaker 5: will advance to the general election in November. Okay, cool
- 12:51Speaker 5: former NFL player wins a Republican primary who cares well.
- 12:55Speaker 5: The person he will be running against in that general
- 12:57Speaker 5: election this November is Democrat Shaha, who was the team
- 13:02Speaker 5: doctor for the New York Jets when Pheeley was there
- 13:04Speaker 5: from two thousand and eight to two thousand and nine.
- 13:06Speaker 5: What are the odds that two player or two people
- 13:09Speaker 5: formally involved with the NFL end up running in the
- 13:13Speaker 5: same congressional district in Arizona, all the way across the
- 13:17Speaker 5: country from where they were together in New York. The
- 13:21Speaker 5: world is a crazy place. That's That's about all I
- 13:23Speaker 5: have to say about that. That's pretty wild. Some MLB
- 13:28Speaker 5: News and Notes MLB dot Com release their hitter power
- 13:33Speaker 5: rankings today and at the top of the list is
- 13:39Speaker 5: who should be at the top of this list Jordan
- 13:41Speaker 5: Alvarez with your Houston Astros. He is leading in each
- 13:46Speaker 5: of the Triple Crown categories right now in the American
- 13:50Speaker 5: League at least three twenty eight batting average, thirty four homers,
- 13:53Speaker 5: seventy seven RBIs. He is easily the favorite for the
- 13:57Speaker 5: MVP in my opinion. We'll see if he actually ends
- 13:59Speaker 5: up getting it. And finally, the Boston Red Sox franchise
- 14:05Speaker 5: record tying fifteen game winning streak came to an end
- 14:09Speaker 5: last night in the nightcap of a double header against
- 14:13Speaker 5: the Orioles. Boston tied the franchise record in game one
- 14:17Speaker 5: of the double header with a six to three win,
- 14:19Speaker 5: an eighty year old record. It was set back in
- 14:22Speaker 5: nineteen forty six, led by Ted Williams, a team that
- 14:24Speaker 5: ended up claiming the Al Pennant. But in the nightcap
- 14:28Speaker 5: of the game, the Orioles got the win five to one,
- 14:32Speaker 5: Kyle Bradish pitching six innings of one run ball. This
- 14:36Speaker 5: is the longest winning streak in the Majors since the
- 14:40Speaker 5: Saint Louis Cardinals also won fifteen games back in twenty
- 14:43Speaker 5: twenty one. It was a good run for the Red Sox.
- 14:46Speaker 5: This winning streak basically brought them back from the brink
- 14:51Speaker 5: of being full scale sellers at the trade deadline. They
- 14:54Speaker 5: are fully back in the playoff mix now, and it
- 14:57Speaker 5: will be interesting to see how much they add. They
- 15:01Speaker 5: had pretty much given up on the season they fired
- 15:03Speaker 5: their head coat or their manager, Alex Cora. Interim manager
- 15:07Speaker 5: Chad Tracy has managed to light a fire under these boys, though,
- 15:10Speaker 5: so it'd be interesting to see how they handle this
- 15:12Speaker 5: going forward, sign for our first break. When we come back,
- 15:16Speaker 5: we will hear from Texas head coach Steve Sarkegan. You're
- 15:20Speaker 5: listening to Chip Iard sports Talk right here on the zone.
- 15:25Speaker 11: History history and some occasion of the sports ship power
- 15:28Speaker 11: shipower with day's forty six on this.
- 15:30Speaker 4: Only eleven to fifty eight.
- 15:31Speaker 12: ALF.
- 15:31Speaker 9: I'm in ninety three point seven f half.
- 15:35Speaker 13: I'm Chad Jones. We know sports injuries hurt, and so
- 15:38Speaker 13: do injuries from car res. But you didn't sign up
- 15:40Speaker 13: to be in a car wreck with someone who wasn't
- 15:42Speaker 13: paying attention. It was their fault and now you're left
- 15:45Speaker 13: to deal with the consequences. You need to see a doctor,
- 15:47Speaker 13: and you're missing work. Chad Jones Law can help. We've

- 16:07Speaker 3: Our buddy Matt Muscunning catches work all over Louisiana.
- 16:11Speaker 15: If you could have your way, would.
- 16:13Speaker 7: You expand to the twenty four Keen Playoffs?
- 16:16Speaker 15: Yes? I think now you're trying to get me on
- 16:18Speaker 15: my soapbox again, David, I want to hear so. I
- 16:20Speaker 15: don't know how much time you got whatever you want.
- 16:23Speaker 15: I don't know that.
- 16:23Speaker 4: I believe that.
- 16:24Speaker 15: So I have pushed back forever on this notion in
- 16:29Speaker 15: college football that it's the most sacred regularly, the greatest
- 16:31Speaker 15: regular season.
- 16:32Speaker 14: It's not Techags Live brought to you by David Gardner's
- 16:34Speaker 14: Jewelers hang Out weekdays from eight to eleven on the Zone,
- 16:56Speaker 14: Sir Powered.
- 16:57Speaker 5: Sports Talk Here on the Zone Caleb Brapolei filling in
- 17:00Speaker 5: Chip today, part of the summer edition of the show.
- 17:02Speaker 5: Right now, it's time for our first listening from SEC
- 17:05Speaker 5: Media Days. Steve Sarkisian, head coach of the Texas.
- 17:09Speaker 16: Longhorns, A coach Aaron Hogan with s Penn and Austin
- 17:12Speaker 16: over here in the front. Tell me about the additions
- 17:16Speaker 16: to your coaching staff so much SEC knowledge with Will
- 17:19Speaker 16: Mos Champion coach Jluke and Mark Stoops. Now, how intentional
- 17:23Speaker 16: was that and what have you seen from having those
- 17:25Speaker 16: those guys to the staff.
- 17:27Speaker 17: Yeah, you know that I think each higher was different
- 17:32Speaker 17: in different timings.
- 17:33Speaker 18: You know.
- 17:33Speaker 17: Obviously, you know, we made a decision to make a
- 17:36Speaker 17: couple of changes on staff, and you know, we we
- 17:40Speaker 17: kind of targeted coach Juluke. We felt like his ties
- 17:43Speaker 17: in New Orleans and had known him from when his
- 17:46Speaker 17: time as a high school head coach at Edna Carr
- 17:49Speaker 17: and just the energy and the passion the way he
- 17:51Speaker 17: coached the game. We felt like we needed that on offense.
- 17:53Speaker 17: And obviously his history at LSU and at Florida that
- 17:56Speaker 17: was helpful, but also his time in Texas was helpful.
- 18:00Speaker 17: So that was that was one piece of it. Then
- 18:02Speaker 17: coach Muschamp was kind of the next piece, and you know,
- 18:05Speaker 17: we felt like we wanted to get back to playing
- 18:08Speaker 17: a style of defense that that I was accustomed to
- 18:11Speaker 17: and aggressive in your face, tighter coverage kind of.
- 18:15Speaker 9: Approach to things.
- 18:16Speaker 17: It doesn't hurt that Will muss Champ's been a head
- 18:19Speaker 17: coach in this league at two different stops at Florida
- 18:21Speaker 17: and South Carolina, and had previously been the defensive coordinator
- 18:25Speaker 17: at Texas. He knew this place, he knew this league.
- 18:29Speaker 17: We philosophically see eye to eye on so many things.
- 18:32Speaker 17: And the last piece for me why that was important.
- 18:35Speaker 17: I felt like I needed to get back to spending
- 18:37Speaker 17: more time with the offense, especially from a game planning perspective,
- 18:42Speaker 17: and in trusting that having a guy who's been a
- 18:45Speaker 17: head coach in this league that could almost be the
- 18:46Speaker 17: head coach of the defense, you know, during during the
- 18:49Speaker 17: week as we were game prepping, that I could get
- 18:51Speaker 17: back to my focus and my energy with the offense.
- 18:54Speaker 17: And and so far, so good, it's been. It's been great.
- 18:57Speaker 17: When it comes to coach Stoops, Hey, I've learned this
- 19:02Speaker 17: a while back with coach Saban. You know, there's a
- 19:05Speaker 17: lot of really good coaches that sometimes are out of
- 19:07Speaker 17: work for a minute, and when you can when you
- 19:10Speaker 17: can compile a little more knowledge, a little more intel,
- 19:15Speaker 17: another way of looking at things. The opportunity that we
- 19:19Speaker 17: had to not only bring in coach Stoops, but Billy
- 19:21Speaker 17: Gonzalez from Florida, who is the interim head coach, is
- 19:24Speaker 17: now with us as an assistant receiver.
- 19:27Speaker 9: Coach Steve Casula from.
- 19:29Speaker 17: Michigan, he was calling plays against us in the Citrus
- 19:32Speaker 17: Bowl and then is on board with us. So we
- 19:34Speaker 17: think that we've we've assembled a really good staff, a
- 19:37Speaker 17: highly competitive staff, a very bright staff, one that's got
- 19:41Speaker 17: a wealth of experience, but are really good teachers and
- 19:44Speaker 17: really good connectors with our players.
- 19:46Speaker 9: I'll say that about all these guys.
- 19:47Speaker 17: Coach Juluke, Coach Musshamp is great having coach Gideon back
- 19:52Speaker 17: as well. Their ability to connect to our players is
- 19:55Speaker 17: a little bit of the secret sauce, and that's something
- 19:58Speaker 17: we're very fortunate to have all those guy's on board
- 20:00Speaker 17: with us.
- 20:01Speaker 19: Front row Michael cobble w b r Z TV and
- 20:04Speaker 19: Baton Rouge just kind of dove ta dove tailing into that.
- 20:08Speaker 19: You've been front and center to the evolution of Lane Kiffin, right, Like,
- 20:12Speaker 19: what do you think of this latest iteration?
- 20:13Speaker 9: And I missed the beginning. I couldn't quit.
- 20:15Speaker 19: You've been front and center of the evolution of Lane Kiffin. Okay,
- 20:18Speaker 19: you know, what do you think of this latest iteration
- 20:20Speaker 19: with him and Baton Rouge now?
- 20:22Speaker 9: And how have you seen maybe him grow?
- 20:24Speaker 18: Well?
- 20:24Speaker 17: I think Lane's a really good coach. You know, everywhere
- 20:26Speaker 17: he's been there's been success. Obviously the most recent success
- 20:31Speaker 17: of what he's had at at ole Miss. He's always
- 20:34Speaker 17: going to assemble a talented roster, and he's always going
- 20:36Speaker 17: to be creative, whether it's through schemes, through recruiting, whatever
- 20:41Speaker 17: that looks like. He he does not look at things traditionally,
- 20:46Speaker 17: you know, He's always going to try to think outside
- 20:47Speaker 17: the box to find a unique way to accomplish something.
- 20:52Speaker 9: And so I expect him to continue to do that
- 20:54Speaker 9: at LSU.
- 20:56Speaker 17: And now he's got more resources, you know, now he's
- 20:58Speaker 17: got more support, and you know, so I think that
- 21:02Speaker 17: that's that's an opportunity for him to continue to grow
- 21:05Speaker 17: on the path and the journey that he's on. A
- 21:07Speaker 17: very proud of Lane. I know he's made a lot
- 21:09Speaker 17: of change changes personally. I'm really proud of him and
- 21:13Speaker 17: not I think those personal changes have led to on
- 21:17Speaker 17: field success, you know, I think there's a direct correlation
- 21:19Speaker 17: to that.
- 21:20Speaker 12: So I'm very happy for him. They're going they all
- 21:22Speaker 12: then pass it back. Jerry Hamilton on Texas Football. kJ
- 21:26Speaker 12: Lacey got a lot of invaluable reps in the spring.
- 21:29Speaker 12: How would you assess his spring and where is he
- 21:31Speaker 12: at in his development in terms of you guys plan.
- 21:34Speaker 9: Yeah, you know, kJ is a.
- 21:35Speaker 17: Guy that as we've gone gone through this with him
- 21:39Speaker 17: and I felt this way in high school and as
- 21:42Speaker 17: we've grown and gone. You know, I hate comparing guys
- 21:45Speaker 17: because it's never fair, but he's got a lot of qualities.
- 21:49Speaker 17: It reminds me a lot of Bryce Young, you know,
- 21:51Speaker 17: and obviously a.
- 21:53Speaker 9: Bit similar stature.
- 21:54Speaker 17: Both natural passers, both very instinctual. Both are sneaky with
- 21:59Speaker 17: their leg and can hurt you with their legs when
- 22:01Speaker 17: they get there. And now it's the maturation process of
- 22:04Speaker 17: understanding schematically and where do I play when I play
- 22:09Speaker 17: so well off schedule, but yet play on schedule so
- 22:12Speaker 17: that I can play off schedule, if that makes sense.
- 22:15Speaker 17: And so I think he's kind of learning that as
- 22:18Speaker 17: we go. I felt like there were some moments in
- 22:20Speaker 17: spring where he was fantastic. There were moments in spring
- 22:23Speaker 17: where there were learning moments. I felt like, as we've
- 22:26Speaker 17: been on the grass with the guys now for the
- 22:28Speaker 17: past you know, I think it's now five weeks or
- 22:31Speaker 17: six weeks or so whatever it's been the summer, I've
- 22:34Speaker 17: seen the best version of kJ Lacey this summer, and
- 22:37Speaker 17: that's encouraging to us that he took the stuff we
- 22:39Speaker 17: wanted him to get better out from spring and apply
- 22:42Speaker 17: it in the summer.
- 22:42Speaker 9: And we've seen that.
- 22:44Speaker 17: I think he'd be a dangerous guy if he got
- 22:46Speaker 17: in the game because of his off schedule stuff that
- 22:49Speaker 17: he can do, but also his ability just to throw
- 22:52Speaker 17: the ball and rhythm and in timing. He's a natural
- 22:54Speaker 17: passer that way, and he's throwing a ton of passes.
- 22:57Speaker 17: In high school, they threw a ton of balls, and
- 22:59Speaker 17: so it's very comfortable and natural for him to do that.
- 23:02Speaker 6: Fourth row in the aisle Hey Steve hangs south On
- 23:05Speaker 6: Texas Football, Kaitlin de Boord talked about yesterday Beama making
- 23:09Speaker 6: a jump and penalty yardage per game from one to
- 23:11Speaker 6: twenty three in the country to seventeen from twenty four
- 23:14Speaker 6: to twenty five. Obviously y'all were a little bit lower
- 23:16Speaker 6: than the country last year.
- 23:18Speaker 20: What if y'all and we were way lower, dude, what
- 23:21Speaker 20: if y'all emphasized in the spring and into the summer
- 23:24Speaker 20: to correct that. And is there anything you focus on
- 23:26Speaker 20: with their live ball pre snap just what you guys
- 23:29Speaker 20: do there?
- 23:29Speaker 17: Yeah, you know, I think one thing that we've evolved
- 23:32Speaker 17: to is the players that and there's I believe this.
- 23:38Speaker 17: If you want to be a disciplined team on the field,
- 23:40Speaker 17: you need to be a disciplined team off the field. Okay,
- 23:43Speaker 17: it starts off the field and then it carries itself
- 23:45Speaker 17: to on the field. And so we've restructured some things
- 23:48Speaker 17: off the field discipline wise, and Coach Becton's very creative
- 23:53Speaker 17: down there in the weight room with some of that discipline.
- 23:55Speaker 17: But the one thing I think that we're doing that
- 23:57Speaker 17: his resonating with the guys is is the players taking
- 24:01Speaker 17: accountability of that. And so when a player jumps off sides,
- 24:05Speaker 17: for example, that whole position group kind of serving that
- 24:10Speaker 17: punishment with him, because that's what happens in a game, right,
- 24:14Speaker 17: It's not you don't jump off sides. And that one
- 24:17Speaker 17: player who jumped off sides moved back five yards. Everybody
- 24:21Speaker 17: moves back five yards. It's first in fifteen now every
- 24:25Speaker 17: you know that changes when you when you when you
- 24:27Speaker 17: rough a quarterback, everybody gets a fifteen yard penalty, the
- 24:30Speaker 17: entire team.
- 24:31Speaker 9: It's not just the individual. This is the ultimate team sport.
- 24:34Speaker 17: So I think shifting kind of the punishment, if you
- 24:37Speaker 17: want to call it, to where everybody feels the effect
- 24:40Speaker 17: of it. I think that's had a real impact on us.
- 24:43Speaker 17: And again, Hey, I think I think you know as
- 24:46Speaker 17: again discipline, There's there's types of penalties that are bad penalties.
- 24:51Speaker 17: Pre snat penalties are bad penalties. Post play penalties are
- 24:55Speaker 17: bad penalties. There's some penalties that as a coach you
- 25:00Speaker 17: kind of need to live with a little bit, like
- 25:02Speaker 17: you can't expect to be a great run blocking team
- 25:06Speaker 17: if you're not maybe playing through the echo of the
- 25:08Speaker 17: whistle like so you've got it. You got to be
- 25:11Speaker 17: able to live with some of that. But and it's
- 25:13Speaker 17: a unique stat because when you really look at the
- 25:16Speaker 17: history of it all, and when you look at wins
- 25:19Speaker 17: and lose wins and losses in game, the penalties is
- 25:23Speaker 17: kind of far down actually on just a sheer metrics.
- 25:27Speaker 9: But when you look at a team and totality at.
- 25:30Speaker 17: The end of the year, I surely don't want to
- 25:33Speaker 17: be one hundred and thirty second in the country and
- 25:35Speaker 17: penalties like that doesn't sit well with me. And that
- 25:38Speaker 17: was the first thing I addressed when we got back
- 25:40Speaker 17: together as a team in January. So I'm probably a
- 25:43Speaker 17: little bit more bullish on it, more of perception of
- 25:48Speaker 17: who we are as a program, because I do believe
- 25:50Speaker 17: we're a disciplined team, but we surely didn't play like
- 25:53Speaker 17: it last year, and we've got to be better. Not
- 25:56Speaker 17: because I think if there's a direct correlation to winning
- 25:58Speaker 17: and losing, but that's a standard at the University of Texas,
- 26:01Speaker 17: and so I think it'll help us win a few
- 26:05Speaker 17: more games.
- 26:05Speaker 9: Honestly, if we do it that way.
- 26:07Speaker 17: I don't know if it's going to be directly tied
- 26:08Speaker 17: to each game, but I think if we play with
- 26:11Speaker 17: more discipline that way.
- 26:13Speaker 9: But all that starts, like you said.
- 26:15Speaker 17: In the offseason, I think we're doing that third rowman
- 26:18Speaker 17: pass it back to the middle.
- 26:20Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 26:20Speaker 11: Steve Barry Trammel with the Tulsa World Pete Golding was
- 26:23Speaker 11: in here yesterday and I talked about the coaches meeting
- 26:26Speaker 11: with the CFP officials and how he was appalled when
- 26:31Speaker 11: he heard that they don't really factor in home road results.
- 26:34Speaker 11: They don't really respect, they don't care, seem to care
- 26:38Speaker 11: where you played the game. Is that what you heard
- 26:41Speaker 11: and what was your reaction?
- 26:43Speaker 9: If so?
- 26:43Speaker 17: Yeah, that it doesn't They don't take into account where
- 26:46Speaker 17: the game took place and and the environment of that
- 26:52Speaker 17: game of where you where you played, and so for example,
- 26:56Speaker 17: us playing at Georgia last year would have been the
- 26:59Speaker 17: same as us playing Georgia at home. That's like the
- 27:05Speaker 17: how difficult it might be to go play at another place?
- 27:08Speaker 17: And I get I understand that that that's arbitrary. You know,
- 27:12Speaker 17: how tough is dk R, how tough is Death Valley,
- 27:16Speaker 17: or how tough is Neeland or how tough is Kyle Field.
- 27:19Speaker 17: That's up for debate, right, But some of that seems
- 27:23Speaker 17: like it's a little bit of common sense. But again
- 27:26Speaker 17: it's not a factor, as we heard it of metricing
- 27:31Speaker 17: a strength of schedule in some fashion or form.
- 27:35Speaker 7: Fourth Brow Tyler Shaw with kBT X At the end
- 27:39Speaker 7: of the Lone Star Showdown last year, there was a
- 27:42Speaker 7: video that played on the video board. It was kind
- 27:45Speaker 7: of a quote of Mike Elco saying, this is the
- 27:47Speaker 7: you know, flagship program of the state and kind of
- 27:49Speaker 7: a troll job way, what.
- 27:52Speaker 9: Were your thoughts of kind of I was not happy
- 27:54Speaker 9: about it rivalry moment. I was not happy about it.
- 27:57Speaker 9: What have you seen from this rivalry so far? These
- 28:00Speaker 9: the hell of a rivalry. I'm fortunate to be part
- 28:02Speaker 9: of it. I'm humbled. I'm honored.
- 28:05Speaker 17: The great players, the great teams, the great coaches who
- 28:09Speaker 17: have been part of this game. I respect it and
- 28:13Speaker 17: I respect the competition. In the last two years, those
- 28:16Speaker 17: have been great games that have mattered. You know, two
- 28:19Speaker 17: years ago, the winner of that game goes to the
- 28:21Speaker 17: SEC Championship. Last year we were fighting for what we
- 28:24Speaker 17: felt like was our playoff lives. They were an undefeated team,
- 28:28Speaker 17: So there were some great moments, but emotions run high
- 28:30Speaker 17: in those games. You know, we had a team that
- 28:33Speaker 17: was trying to think about going to plant in the
- 28:35Speaker 17: flag two years ago, and I wouldn't let that happen.
- 28:37Speaker 17: I respect the game of football, and I respect college football,
- 28:40Speaker 17: and I respect the football gods. And there's a way
- 28:43Speaker 17: to go about our business and there there's a way
- 28:45Speaker 17: not And so rivalries are great, but we got to
- 28:48Speaker 17: be able to fight the emotions that come with the rivalry.
- 28:51Speaker 17: And I think that's why we've had success in some
- 28:53Speaker 17: of our rivalry games, whether it's A and M or
- 28:55Speaker 17: OU or Arkansas. So I think we do a good
- 28:58Speaker 17: job of managing our emotion and so, but that's that's
- 29:01Speaker 17: a that's a real challenge when you get into games
- 29:04Speaker 17: like that.
- 29:05Speaker 18: Right side second row, hey, coach Rob Gregson, it is
- 29:08Speaker 18: these sports, given the way that the last two Ohio
- 29:11Speaker 18: State games went and having them at home this year,
- 29:13Speaker 18: is there an emphasis on getting a win in that game?
- 29:17Speaker 7: Well?
- 29:17Speaker 17: Yeah, what else do you want to know? I mean,
- 29:22Speaker 17: of course, right, I mean, they're they're a really good team.
- 29:25Speaker 9: Uh.
- 29:25Speaker 17: Coach Day is a fantastic coach. He's he's always got
- 29:31Speaker 17: talented rosters, you know. I think he he continually finds
- 29:35Speaker 17: ways to to to have a great staff around his
- 29:38Speaker 17: players that they play at a high level.
- 29:42Speaker 9: They believe, they they've got.
- 29:43Speaker 17: Belief, they're you know, you you get into games, and
- 29:47Speaker 17: especially two years ago, I think the two years we've
- 29:52Speaker 17: played them, they were really good on defense. And I
- 29:55Speaker 17: think of the those players that started against us in
- 29:58Speaker 17: that semi final game two years ago, I think twelve players,
- 30:03Speaker 17: all eleven starters plus Avril Reese have been drafted off
- 30:06Speaker 17: that defense into the inner playing in the NFL. So
- 30:08Speaker 17: that's just speak to the quality of defense that they've had.
- 30:11Speaker 17: And they've had really good offensive players too. Travon Harrison,
- 30:15Speaker 17: Henderson's pretty good, you know, Quinn Shawn Jenkins is pretty good,
- 30:18Speaker 17: Jeremiah Smith's pretty good. And so there's a balancing act
- 30:21Speaker 17: of the culture that they have and the belief they
- 30:24Speaker 17: have the talent that they have and then the schemes
- 30:26Speaker 17: that they run, and so you've got to get yourself
- 30:29Speaker 17: ready to play in games like that, and you need
- 30:31Speaker 17: to be at your best when your best is needed.
- 30:33Speaker 17: And we've had moments in both those games when we
- 30:35Speaker 17: could have seized opportunities that could have changed the complexion
- 30:38Speaker 17: of the game, and we didn't do it. And to
- 30:41Speaker 17: come out on top this year, we're going to have
- 30:43Speaker 17: to seize those moments when.
- 30:44Speaker 9: They present themselves. File questions. I know that's what you
- 30:47Speaker 9: were probably looking for. I was just giving you hard time.
- 30:49Speaker 21: So last question, Yeah, hey, coach Evan Camico News nine
- 30:53Speaker 21: Oklahoma City Parker Livingston going from Texas to Oklahoma. What's
- 30:56Speaker 21: it going to be like to see him on the
- 30:57Speaker 21: sidelines on the opposite side of the Red River game?
- 31:00Speaker 17: I mean, I hope we kick his ass. It's the
- 31:04Speaker 17: red River rivalry, you know what I mean. He chose
- 31:06Speaker 17: to go there. He's on the other side. It's the
- 31:08Speaker 17: way the game goes. If you've ever been, it's a
- 31:10Speaker 17: hell of a game. It's an epic, you know, pulling
- 31:13Speaker 17: into the Cotton Bowl, the State Fair, the corn Dogs,
- 31:17Speaker 17: the Turkey Legs, the you know, split down the middle
- 31:21Speaker 17: of the fifty yard line, both teams of the same tunnel.
- 31:24Speaker 17: Like at the end of the day, like it's competition.
- 31:28Speaker 17: You know, after the game, I'm sure I'll give him
- 31:29Speaker 17: a big hug. Before that, we're trying to beat his ass.
- 31:32Speaker 17: That's that's the way it goes.
- 31:34Speaker 5: All right. That was Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkejan
- 31:38Speaker 5: at the final day of SEC Media Days in Tampa, Florida.
- 31:42Speaker 5: When we come back, we're going to hear from the
- 31:45Speaker 5: play by play broadcaster for the Bress Valley Bombers, mister

- 35:44Speaker 5: by play broadcaster for the Brasses Valley Bombers, mister Andrew Rapsilver. Andrew,
- 35:49Speaker 5: thank you for joining me today. No, I appreciate you
- 35:51Speaker 5: having me absolutely excited to talk to some brasses Valley
- 35:55Speaker 5: Bomber baseball, something that doesn't really get talked about by
- 35:59Speaker 5: anybody other than you in the evenings. You know, we
- 36:01Speaker 5: don't really get to talk about it a lot on
- 36:03Speaker 5: these shows.
- 36:03Speaker 3: So right, No, it's been a lot of fun, and
- 36:05Speaker 3: the season's gone along and we've got just a few
- 36:08Speaker 3: more regular season games to go. But it's been an
- 36:10Speaker 3: exciting thing. It's been out of the particular vicinity of
- 36:14Speaker 3: Brian College station being in Novsota, WHI we call our
- 36:17Speaker 3: home away from home this year is the new stadium's
- 36:19Speaker 3: being built, but enjoyed a lot of great crowds, great baseball,
- 36:23Speaker 3: and tight playoff race here before the end of the season.
- 36:26Speaker 5: Yeah, it's definitely been pretty up and down for the Bombers.
- 36:31Speaker 5: That first half under five hundred started off with a
- 36:34Speaker 5: little bit of a losing streak if I remember correctly,
- 36:37Speaker 5: had that twenty to zero loss early in the season,
- 36:39Speaker 5: but you know, they've bounced back, so that's been good
- 36:41Speaker 5: to see. So first year with the Bombers. Yes, you've
- 36:46Speaker 5: done every game that's been broadcasted.
- 36:48Speaker 3: Right, just pretty much almost though, okay, all of them.
- 36:51Speaker 5: So how'd you end up getting into this position here.
- 36:55Speaker 3: So I've done a couple of years of broadcasting through
- 36:58Speaker 3: Belleville High School, doing base ball in football, and over
- 37:02Speaker 3: the past baseball season, I met Nick Savage, who's here
- 37:04Speaker 3: and does just great work with tech SAgs, and we
- 37:07Speaker 3: got into contact and and and spoke a little bit,
- 37:10Speaker 3: and uh, he listened to some of the tapes that
- 37:12Speaker 3: I had, and we kind of through those connections, I
- 37:15Speaker 3: met Uri Geva, the owner of the Bombers, and they
- 37:18Speaker 3: ended up being an opening for for the play by
- 37:20Speaker 3: play broadcasting position for for this season. And after conversations
- 37:25Speaker 3: with Urray, it all it all came together pretty quickly
- 37:27Speaker 3: and and just like that, there was and so it's
- 37:31Speaker 3: it's it's been awesome. It was a you know, Nick
- 37:34Speaker 3: and I keep in touch pretty often or often enough
- 37:38Speaker 3: at least, and he's been incredibly helpful and so that
- 37:41Speaker 3: all it all kind of came together quick. But it's
- 37:43Speaker 3: been a lot of fun, been exciting.
- 37:44Speaker 18: Yeah.
- 37:44Speaker 5: I think Nick's on a plane right now on the
- 37:46Speaker 5: way back from Tampa SEC Media Days. Perfect. But so
- 37:52Speaker 5: you said that you've done a lot of football in
- 37:55Speaker 5: the past, doing this many baseball games in this short
- 37:59Speaker 5: of a time, frame. How would you say that, you know,
- 38:02Speaker 5: calling the two sports, how does it compare?
- 38:04Speaker 3: Oh man, it's it's definitely different. Baseball is very methodical
- 38:11Speaker 3: and there is no pitch clock in TCL, so it's
- 38:13Speaker 3: it's really you know, every time you want to adjust
- 38:16Speaker 3: your bat and glove, step out, reset, you know. So
- 38:20Speaker 3: in terms of as a broadcaster, there's definitely a cadence
- 38:25Speaker 3: and rhythm you try to you try to uphold, you
- 38:27Speaker 3: try to not have as much dead air you can
- 38:31Speaker 3: let the game breathe. But but there's certainly a lot
- 38:34Speaker 3: more filling in football is always just so constant. There
- 38:38Speaker 3: is an especially in doing high school Bevels run the
- 38:42Speaker 3: slot t offense for as long as I can remember,
- 38:44Speaker 3: and that is you were in the huddle for less
- 38:47Speaker 3: than three seconds and then to the line and the
- 38:49Speaker 3: ball is snapped and you're off and running. And so
- 38:52Speaker 3: there's definitely a football is very much a you have
- 38:57Speaker 3: to be ready, you have to get your I right,
- 39:00Speaker 3: get the down in distance right, how many yards the
- 39:02Speaker 3: last play was whatever or whatever penalty It occurred very quickly,
- 39:06Speaker 3: So it's at the speed is is certainly certainly an aspect.
- 39:09Speaker 3: So it's it's good because every bit of football action
- 39:14Speaker 3: that you're seeing. It's it's almost easier to keep up
- 39:17Speaker 3: with for me because it's there's there's no there's no
- 39:20Speaker 3: dead air, there's always something going on. Baseball you've got
- 39:24Speaker 3: to sort of be a little bit more methodical. So
- 39:25Speaker 3: the approaches are definitely different.
- 39:27Speaker 5: Yeah, for sure. I don't know if you've ever called
- 39:29Speaker 5: any basketball, but that's like the very opposite extreme of baseball.
- 39:34Speaker 5: That's it's basketball, there's never any time to sit and
- 39:38Speaker 5: think about it. Football is there's a little more time,
- 39:40Speaker 5: and then baseball you almost have to come up with
- 39:43Speaker 5: stuff to talk about in between pitches.
- 39:44Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 39:44Speaker 3: Right, basketball is certainly certainly on the radar coming up
- 39:47Speaker 3: in the season. I'd like to do some of that,
- 39:49Speaker 3: but that's it's that's another one of those fast paced,
- 39:52Speaker 3: quick and so I think each one of them has
- 39:54Speaker 3: their their pros and cons in terms of not not
- 39:59Speaker 3: cons necessarily, but approaches to broadcasting it. You know, there's,
- 40:02Speaker 3: like he said, there's always something going on in football,
- 40:04Speaker 3: but then a baseball you can really sometimes slow down
- 40:09Speaker 3: and embrace all of what's going on and really diagnose
- 40:14Speaker 3: each and every aspect of what's on the field and
- 40:16Speaker 3: as a broadcaster being able to paint the picture as
- 40:18Speaker 3: best as possible because you try to do that, especially
- 40:21Speaker 3: on a radio only on audience. Yeah, that baseball allows
- 40:25Speaker 3: you to do that, say a lot better than football.
- 40:27Speaker 3: You could go really quickly with football, two receivers to
- 40:30Speaker 3: the left, two to the three to the right of
- 40:31Speaker 3: the quarterback. Someone's back in the pocket with them, you know,
- 40:34Speaker 3: in the backfield, and then that's it.
- 40:36Speaker 5: That's all you've got.
- 40:37Speaker 3: You don't also, yeah, and then you don't you don't
- 40:39Speaker 3: get to say, really where everyone's going on the field.
- 40:44Speaker 3: It's it's going to be the cliff notes. But baseball
- 40:48Speaker 3: you can really really diagnose how everything's set up and
- 40:51Speaker 3: really paint a better picture.
- 40:53Speaker 18: Yeah.
- 40:53Speaker 5: The opportunity I got to do high school football as
- 40:57Speaker 5: a play by play guy was because the guy who
- 41:00Speaker 5: I had been doing play by play wanted to watch
- 41:02Speaker 5: his son, who played on the offensive line. When you're
- 41:04Speaker 5: doing play by play, you don't have time to look
- 41:06Speaker 5: at the offensive line. You just have to follow the ball.
- 41:08Speaker 3: So Yeah, for for play by play and mentioning an
- 41:12Speaker 3: offensive lineman, usually the only time is if they committed
- 41:15Speaker 3: a holding penalty, yeah, or something missed block you were
- 41:18Speaker 3: if you were known, then it's probably wasn't for a
- 41:20Speaker 3: good reason.
- 41:21Speaker 5: So that's sort of the nature of it.
- 41:23Speaker 3: But because you do, you get the highlights, and you
- 41:26Speaker 3: you keep going because that's all you have time for.
- 41:28Speaker 5: So you mentioned trying to paint a picture in these broadcasts.
- 41:34Speaker 5: A big part of that is your color commentator. And
- 41:36Speaker 5: I know for you it's been mostly the same person
- 41:39Speaker 5: throughout the season, but there's been you know, a few
- 41:42Speaker 5: different people in the booth with you. So how is that.
- 41:44Speaker 5: How has that been trying to adjust and making sure you,
- 41:47Speaker 5: you know, keep that good chemistry.
- 41:49Speaker 3: Well, I think the biggest thing with that is what's
- 41:52Speaker 3: awesome and what the Bombers organization does. It's a lot
- 41:55Speaker 3: of times that there's some people that have had experience,
- 41:58Speaker 3: but then there's some that this is their first experience.
- 42:01Speaker 3: And giving people these opportunities to learn about broadcasting, get
- 42:05Speaker 3: to experience it, enjoy it, and get some great experience
- 42:11Speaker 3: in learning each of the aspects to it. And so
- 42:13Speaker 3: I was fortunate enough when I went to Belleville High
- 42:16Speaker 3: School for those those couple of years to start and
- 42:18Speaker 3: I still broadcast with them. I came into a system
- 42:22Speaker 3: with four guys who have been broadcasting for twenty years.
- 42:26Speaker 3: John Marson, Kaevich, Greg Brown, Steven Jackson, Dan Murz.
- 42:29Speaker 9: They all, each one of them.
- 42:30Speaker 3: Are different broadcasters that taught me different things when we
- 42:33Speaker 3: do baseball and football and all of the you know
- 42:36Speaker 3: how gracious they were to me. I think about that
- 42:38Speaker 3: when someone comes in in. What did the people that
- 42:42Speaker 3: taught me? What can I use and apply to someone
- 42:46Speaker 3: else coming in? And so they made me feel as
- 42:49Speaker 3: comfortable as possible, And so that's what I've tried to
- 42:51Speaker 3: do for people coming in is make them feel as
- 42:54Speaker 3: comfortable as possible. And the biggest the lessons I've had.
- 42:57Speaker 3: One of the things that just always stuck with me
- 42:59Speaker 3: is is if you sit and think about how many
- 43:02Speaker 3: people are watching or listening, if you've never done it before,
- 43:05Speaker 3: it can be overwhelming.
- 43:07Speaker 5: And so all I've.
- 43:08Speaker 3: Said is, there's whether it be two or three people
- 43:10Speaker 3: in the booth for the night or whatever, you and
- 43:12Speaker 3: me are having a conversation and we're watching a baseball games.
- 43:16Speaker 3: That's all you need to think about, is we're talking
- 43:18Speaker 3: and watching a baseball game at the same time, and
- 43:21Speaker 3: you happen to have a headset on. Just think about
- 43:24Speaker 3: it like that. And if you really just break it
- 43:27Speaker 3: down to that sense and make it not much more
- 43:30Speaker 3: complicated than that. When you put just a regular basis
- 43:34Speaker 3: on it, it makes it easier to sort of get
- 43:35Speaker 3: comfortable and get into it and really get some good experience.
- 43:40Speaker 5: Yeah, and don't you don't think about the tens and
- 43:43Speaker 5: tens of people that may be listening.
- 43:45Speaker 9: Yeah, that's it.
- 43:45Speaker 5: Yeah, that's right. We're talking with Andrew Rapsolver, the play

- 46:40Speaker 5: We're talking to Andrew rapsol Or, the play by play
- 46:43Speaker 5: broadcaster for at the Brass Valley Bombers, and you'll hear
- 46:46Speaker 5: him later tonight. The Bomber has taken on the Cane
- 46:50Speaker 5: Cutters in one of the final regular season games of
- 46:54Speaker 5: the season. So we left off, you know, just kind
- 46:57Speaker 5: of talking about broadcasting and the differences between baseball and
- 47:01Speaker 5: football basketball. But I want to get into, you know,
- 47:03Speaker 5: some of the Bombers specific stuff. Now this is for
- 47:08Speaker 5: those who haven't been paying attention. This is college summer ball,
- 47:12Speaker 5: so players come and go kind of throughout the season.
- 47:16Speaker 5: You know, the Bombers have played around forty games, and
- 47:19Speaker 5: I looked it up. The most a single player has
- 47:21Speaker 5: played in is twenty seven games. So it's been a
- 47:25Speaker 5: lot of you know, turnover in the lineup game to game.
- 47:29Speaker 5: So does that make your job hard trying to remember
- 47:31Speaker 5: all these players and you know, craft a story like
- 47:33Speaker 5: we were talking about earlier.
- 47:35Speaker 3: In some ways, yes, But we've got a really good
- 47:38Speaker 3: team around us, and one of them particularly being being
- 47:41Speaker 3: Evan Stringfellow, our stats as team statistician. He every time
- 47:46Speaker 3: I get to the stadium, before I'm even set up
- 47:48Speaker 3: and ready to go, he's like, hey, just you know,
- 47:50Speaker 3: once you get all your notes ready to go. So
- 47:53Speaker 3: and so is here now as part of the team,
- 47:55Speaker 3: and so and so is not on the team anymore,
- 47:57Speaker 3: and it's just a heads up and two of them
- 47:59Speaker 3: are going to play, and so it's like you already
- 48:02Speaker 3: coming in. You you know, you've already got a little
- 48:03Speaker 3: bit of a head start, and so that that's been
- 48:05Speaker 3: incredibly incredibly helpful in some ways. Yes, the season is
- 48:11Speaker 3: is very quick and heavy, so there's gonna be some familiarity,
- 48:17Speaker 3: but you know going into it there's gonna be a
- 48:18Speaker 3: lot of fluctuation and change, and so you get the
- 48:22Speaker 3: storylines of each each players where they're going and sometimes
- 48:25Speaker 3: sometimes you know that there's it's going to be a
- 48:27Speaker 3: couple of week long stint with with a certain player.
- 48:29Speaker 3: So there are some challenges with it because there isn't
- 48:35Speaker 3: the normal consistency as you would see in you know,
- 48:39Speaker 3: and in a full season. But it's certainly manageable and
- 48:43Speaker 3: you start to do recognize a lot of familiar faces
- 48:46Speaker 3: that you see over and over, and so when you
- 48:47Speaker 3: add a couple at a time, it's it's not all
- 48:50Speaker 3: at once. It's not a whole new team at once.
- 48:52Speaker 3: So it's it's not as as bad as you think.
- 48:55Speaker 5: Right, that makes sense, and you know, on the other
- 48:59Speaker 5: side of that, it might be a bunch of different
- 49:02Speaker 5: players game to game, but at least you know the
- 49:04Speaker 5: amount of teams that you're playing. There's not that many
- 49:07Speaker 5: unique teams. It's only an eight team league in the
- 49:10Speaker 5: Texas Collegiate League, so that kind of I feel like
- 49:14Speaker 5: probably cancels out almost the the uniqueness of the different players.
- 49:21Speaker 5: Having those same teams come in game after game and
- 49:23Speaker 5: you kind of get to learn their players, I'm sure
- 49:26Speaker 5: makes that a lot easier.
- 49:28Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely, it's with the amount of teams, if there are,
- 49:32Speaker 3: you do get the familiarity and what we've had in
- 49:34Speaker 3: a couple of instances, and like for right now, the
- 49:37Speaker 3: Cane Cutters, where that was the last in the last
- 49:41Speaker 3: homestand we played the Cane Cutters and this was just
- 49:44Speaker 3: last week, so we've it's sometimes how the schedules stacked
- 49:47Speaker 3: where you play the same team for six times in
- 49:51Speaker 3: a span of fourteen days, where it's you really get
- 49:54Speaker 3: a familiarity quickly and you have like a crash course
- 49:57Speaker 3: on them, so then if you do see them once
- 49:59Speaker 3: later in season, it's like you do remember all that.
- 50:02Speaker 3: So it's it's not so much. The the constant change
- 50:09Speaker 3: and the constant fluctuation, so you do get a really
- 50:13Speaker 3: really heavy basis of each team very quickly.
- 50:16Speaker 5: So we mentioned it a little bit before. The Bombers
- 50:20Speaker 5: have had some really good winning streaks and some pretty
- 50:23Speaker 5: low losing streaks. So why do you think maybe this
- 50:26Speaker 5: team's been so streaky throughout this year.
- 50:29Speaker 3: I do think the change in roster is something that
- 50:33Speaker 3: can't be looked over lightly. And I think that it's
- 50:37Speaker 3: natural everyone faces it. But that's just it's sort of
- 50:40Speaker 3: the unpredictable nature of summer ball. Which also makes it
- 50:44Speaker 3: why it's so interesting is because there's going to be
- 50:47Speaker 3: a lot of run scoring. You know, pitchers and catchers
- 50:49Speaker 3: aren't haven't really worked together as much. Yeah, and makes
- 50:52Speaker 3: it more prone to walks and extra hits and extra
- 50:55Speaker 3: base hits. And you look at the the streakiness in particular,
- 51:00Speaker 3: are the Bombers out talked to Ryan and Ryan Targatch
- 51:03Speaker 3: at the beginning of the season, and one of the
- 51:06Speaker 3: things he mentioned to me right off was, you know,
- 51:09Speaker 3: the goal when you when you get these guys in
- 51:11Speaker 3: here and it's going to be fluctuation and change, is
- 51:15Speaker 3: to take your daily vitamins and the idea that it
- 51:18Speaker 3: is taking your daily vitamins leads you to a healthier
- 51:20Speaker 3: long run. So whoever you bring in, if you get
- 51:23Speaker 3: them on that same page and keep them mechanics right,
- 51:27Speaker 3: that puts you ahead. And there's definitely been a lot
- 51:30Speaker 3: of times where where that's happened. The bats have been
- 51:34Speaker 3: really really productive, and we've done so without the home
- 51:38Speaker 3: run ball. You know, the home run is you know,
- 51:41Speaker 3: prominent in some of the players, but it's really you know,
- 51:43Speaker 3: a lot of drawing walks, stealing bases, lots of singles,
- 51:48Speaker 3: and some extra base hits and things like that. But
- 51:51Speaker 3: that provides you to some winning baseball. But some of
- 51:54Speaker 3: the nature and the pitching can lead to exactly what's
- 51:57Speaker 3: going on. And I think what can be discounted as
- 52:01Speaker 3: the fact that how talented the league is. You look
- 52:04Speaker 3: at ten players from a season who were drafted to
- 52:08Speaker 3: the to the major or to the MLB draft and
- 52:10Speaker 3: to the farm systems excuse me, that go through that,
- 52:14Speaker 3: and you know there's a lot of talent that goes about.
- 52:16Speaker 3: You can never have a day off, it's always always competitive,
- 52:20Speaker 3: and it's a short season, and so it's all packed
- 52:24Speaker 3: in so you can never take your foot off the gas.
- 52:26Speaker 3: You had the eight game winning streak just now the
- 52:29Speaker 3: Bombers were, I believe it was four games above a
- 52:33Speaker 3: playoff the playoff line. Yeah, and now lose five in
- 52:36Speaker 3: a row and you're only half a game above it.
- 52:38Speaker 3: So things can change so quick, and four games left
- 52:41Speaker 3: in the regular season, and a lot's going to change
- 52:43Speaker 3: in the next four days. And that's kind of the
- 52:45Speaker 3: nature of it. You always have to be ready and
- 52:47Speaker 3: always have to be ready for change.
- 52:49Speaker 5: So you mentioned the playoffs and TCL playoff structure. I
- 52:55Speaker 5: think it's pretty similar to how a lot of the
- 52:56Speaker 5: minor leagues do it, where there's a first half champion,
- 52:59Speaker 5: second half champion. So can you explain that playoff structure
- 53:02Speaker 5: and where the Bombers are sitting right now?
- 53:04Speaker 4: Right?
- 53:05Speaker 3: So we've talked about it ad nauseum throughout the season.
- 53:09Speaker 3: It's broken into two halves, as you mentioned, twenty four
- 53:13Speaker 3: games apiece. After the first twenty four games out of
- 53:17Speaker 3: the eight teams, the top two in the standings clinched
- 53:20Speaker 3: a playoff spot. Now going into the second half, you
- 53:24Speaker 3: do the same thing on the second half standings. At
- 53:26Speaker 3: the end of the second half, the top two will
- 53:30Speaker 3: also qualify for the playoffs. If one of the top
- 53:33Speaker 3: two seeds from the first half is in the top
- 53:37Speaker 3: two in the second half, the tiebreaker for that would
- 53:39Speaker 3: be the next best team with the highest overall record
- 53:43Speaker 3: of the entire season. So if there happens to be
- 53:46Speaker 3: a repeat team in that which right now Victoria and
- 53:50Speaker 3: the cane Cutters, or the two teams that clinch in
- 53:53Speaker 3: the first half, right now, those two are not in
- 53:55Speaker 3: playoff positions in the second half, so it looks like
- 53:57Speaker 3: it may be two teams potentially, seeing how the last
- 54:00Speaker 3: four games go for the second half season. But the
- 54:03Speaker 3: Bombers right now, they they did not qualify from the
- 54:07Speaker 3: top two seeds in the first half. Right now, they
- 54:09Speaker 3: sit in first place by a half game here in
- 54:12Speaker 3: the second half, and so we're fingers crossed hopefully the
- 54:15Speaker 3: homestand to close out the regular season does them well
- 54:19Speaker 3: and we'll hopefully be bringing bringing you guys some playoff baseball.
- 54:23Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely, for our listeners out there, tonight's broadcast between
- 54:28Speaker 5: the Bombers and the kne Cutters begins at six forty
- 54:31Speaker 5: five right here on the zone wherever you're listening to this,
- 54:34Speaker 5: Whether it's on the radio, on the app or online.
- 54:37Speaker 5: You just keep it tuned right there, and at six
- 54:39Speaker 5: forty five you'll hear Andrew bring you the game tonight.
- 54:43Speaker 5: A little bit of breaking news that we have before
- 54:45Speaker 5: we get out of here and go to the second hour.
- 54:53Speaker 5: For you NASCAR fans out there, Hendrick Motorsports has announced
- 54:57Speaker 5: that Alex Bowman will be retiring from full time racing
- 55:00Speaker 5: after the twenty twenty seven season, which I feel like
- 55:04Speaker 5: it's got to be a type of because why would
- 55:05Speaker 5: you announce this a year in advance.
- 55:07Speaker 3: It might it might be the twenty twenty seventh season,
- 55:10Speaker 3: depending on when his contract ends. And I know Bowman
- 55:14Speaker 3: has had a lot of health issues in this year
- 55:16Speaker 3: and so I know that some of that plays into it.
- 55:19Speaker 3: So it very may very well be the twenty twenty
- 55:22Speaker 3: seven season when he's done. Definitely kind of stunning, though,
- 55:26Speaker 3: I who's not anywhere on my radar. We were talking
- 55:31Speaker 3: a little bit earlier. I've got a couple ideas who
- 55:34Speaker 3: could take over the forty eight, but I think it's
- 55:37Speaker 3: that that was definitely surprising.
- 55:39Speaker 5: Yeah, we were talking about it. I mean, I think
- 55:42Speaker 5: Carson Hosvar probably is the first name on the list.
- 55:45Speaker 3: That's what I That's what I was thinking is you know,
- 55:47Speaker 3: I know he's got a great relationship with Jeff Dickerson
- 55:50Speaker 3: and all them at Spier Motorsports and everything that he's done.
- 55:52Speaker 3: He's got a contract through twenty thirty. Yeah, but I
- 55:56Speaker 3: he's got so much talent and he is the personality
- 55:59Speaker 3: that now car needs, and I know he's abrasive and
- 56:03Speaker 3: so that leads to some people not liking him or
- 56:06Speaker 3: liking him. I think he's great. I think he's what
- 56:08Speaker 3: the sport needs and I would love to see him
- 56:12Speaker 3: in that forty eight car, But I just don't know
- 56:14Speaker 3: if it'll happen.
- 56:15Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean that the biggest question there is definitely
- 56:19Speaker 5: the contract. I mean, I don't think the money is
- 56:22Speaker 5: really that big a deal because I think Hendrick would
- 56:24Speaker 5: would buy that out and no problem. But it'll be
- 56:28Speaker 5: very interesting and there's some other candidates you know, that'll
- 56:31Speaker 5: come up, and especially because this is a year in advance,
- 56:34Speaker 5: there could be somebody that's not even on our radar
- 56:36Speaker 5: right now that ends up getting the seat.
- 56:37Speaker 3: Well, and so you know, there's there's options to in
- 56:39Speaker 3: the Ol'reilly series that may and you know Corey Day
- 56:42Speaker 3: being one of those that was mentioned in the past.
- 56:44Speaker 3: But we don't know what will come out with that
- 56:47Speaker 3: with Hendrick, but something with Hosts of AR. You know,
- 56:50Speaker 3: Hendrick runs a pretty tight ship, and so I do
- 56:53Speaker 3: wonder about what that would look like for Hosts of
- 56:56Speaker 3: R if that's something he wants to sign up for
- 56:58Speaker 3: or not.
- 56:58Speaker 5: I'm not you know, we'll find out.
- 57:00Speaker 9: He does have some.
- 57:01Speaker 3: Autonomy there at Spire and he's they've they've let him
- 57:05Speaker 3: be himself, which I think is awesome. But yeah, it's
- 57:08Speaker 3: certainly gonna be interesting to see how that all that
- 57:10Speaker 3: all plays out and how Bowman does the rest of
- 57:13Speaker 3: the career that he has.
- 57:14Speaker 5: Yeah, we could see boy wonder connors Zilitch getting there too.
- 57:16Speaker 5: We'll see. But I think that's about all the time
- 57:19Speaker 5: we have. Thanks for joining us, Andrew, I appreciate it.
- 57:21Speaker 5: Andrew Rapsilver played by a play broadcaster for the Brasses
- 57:24Speaker 5: Valley Bombers. You can hear that game against the Cane
- 57:27Speaker 5: Cutters tonight starting at six forty five. Cale Brapley here
- 57:30Speaker 5: filling in for Chip. This is Chip Howard Sports Talk
- 57:32Speaker 5: on the Zone.
