Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:10through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:18Welcome back to Mini Scroll everyone, and happy Tuesday.
- 0:23I have three stories for you guys, so we're going to get
- 0:27right into it because some of these stories are long.
- 0:29So the first story that I have for you is I need to talk about
- 0:33the new Taylor Swift style book because there is some serious
- 0:37Twitter drama amongst the Swifties on Twitter over this
- 0:41book. OK, so this is pretty niche.
- 0:43Like I said, it is like mostly just occurring on Swifty
- 0:47Twitter, but that corner of the Internet is criticizing a fellow
- 0:51fan named Sarah Chappell after she released a book called
- 0:54Taylor Swift Style Fashion Through the Eras.
- 0:58Sarah is a well known Swifty, having run the Taylor Swift
- 1:01Style blog and chronicling the singer's looks since October
- 1:052011. As you might expect from the
- 1:08name, the book was dedicated to the singer's iconic outfits and
- 1:11was released early last month. While all of this might seem
- 1:15harmless, Sarah has received some pretty intense backlash.
- 1:19Many Swifties have questioned her commentary around the
- 1:22outfits, saying that they are critical and mean for no reason.
- 1:25Quote. I've been following Taylor Swift
- 1:27style for years and I've never once thought anything bad about
- 1:31her. The things written in her book
- 1:33are genuinely shocking. I feel like this all came out of
- 1:36nowhere, one Twitter stand wrote.
- 1:39Users have also been sharing screenshots to, like, prove that
- 1:43this book is unnecessarily harsh, so I'm going to read a
- 1:47couple of them. The title Sarah wrote is
- 1:49Everything is Awful and Everything Hurts.
- 1:51And then the comment says this was a day when I have to assume
- 1:55that every person on Taylor's otherwise impeccable glam team
- 1:58was replaced by a vengeful robot set on wreaking havoc.
- 2:03Target Taylor Swift, objective, heavy hand, everything.
- 2:07Mission accomplished. The overly worked curls and the
- 2:11garish makeup do her no favors, and neither does that dated
- 2:14bandage stress by Herve Leisure, a design that was inescapable in
- 2:18the mid 2000s, relentlessly worn by a bevy of reality TV stars
- 2:23and seen by the dozen in any line sneaking out of a
- 2:26nightclub. OK, another segment.
- 2:28The title is 4 words sequin houndstooth jogger set and the
- 2:33description reads. That phrase should send shivers
- 2:37of fear down your spine. MTVVMAS where Taylor wore this
- 2:41Ashish set are the most appropriate place for a fun,
- 2:44ridiculous look. But why must it be a SHJS?
- 2:50Elasticized cuffs have no business on a red carpet,
- 2:54especially not when they come up short, literally, and hit the
- 2:57wearer mid shin. That said, I've recently come to
- 3:00the conclusion that perhaps the striped elasticized straps on
- 3:04Taylor's Christian Louboutin heels are meant to be a nod to a
- 3:07sportier shoe like basketball high tops to befit the athletes
- 3:11or nature of the jogger set. I am nothing if not someone who
- 3:14can get behind intentional thematic style choices, even
- 3:18when those choices result in dot dot dot this.
- 3:21So a lot of Swifties are fighting about this, saying that
- 3:25she has no business. Sarah has no business commenting
- 3:28on fashion. She has no proper credentials.
- 3:30Although like I said, she has been commenting on Taylor Swiss
- 3:32fashion and kind of like like blogging about it and keeping
- 3:35track of it for years, like almost a decade or over a
- 3:38decade, I guess. And she has a very big following
- 3:41because of it. But yeah, people are fighting
- 3:44about how mean this book is. They're saying like, how did
- 3:47this get published? So some people are coming for
- 3:49her, like I said, others are noting that basically Sarah is
- 3:53simply a fashion critic sharing her opinions, whether they are
- 3:56harsh or not. Quote Sometimes I remember that
- 3:58I like Taylor Swift a normal amount when I see her fandom
- 4:01canceling the Taylor Swift fashion historian for mildly
- 4:05stating Blondie doesn't always have a great fashion style
- 4:08something which I feel every normal person knows about Taylor
- 4:12rights 1 user just some harmless Twitter drama love to see it
- 4:17that's what this podcast is all about OK the next story that I
- 4:21have for you guys is we need to talk about the rebuilding
- 4:25Atlantis TikTok account because this account is going viral.
- 4:30A lot of people think we are watching a cult form in a real
- 4:34time on TikTok. OK so there is this man on
- 4:36TikTok who has started gaining traction in recent weeks for
- 4:40documenting the process of what many claim is him forming a
- 4:43cult. So he started his TikTok in
- 4:46February 2023 and it basically just started.
- 4:50You know him talking about how he had 20 acres of land in West
- 4:54TX. It was very much like watch me
- 4:57live off the grid. He did talk a lot about being
- 5:00like anti establishment and he was very much like all, all
- 5:03about the average Joe, like sticking up to the man, you
- 5:07know, fighting back against corporations.
- 5:09So a lot of people got behind it, you know, cost of living,
- 5:12everything that we have going on.
- 5:14People were like, yeah, this seems rad.
- 5:16In November 2023, his video started to take a bit of a more
- 5:19extreme turn where he started using junk that he had collected
- 5:23to basically build structures, like using rusty metal scraps to
- 5:27build a dam. And then one month later, quote
- 5:30in December, he recorded several videos of police officers asking
- 5:34for his ID, which he refused to provide.
- 5:36In all these exchanges, he was combative, sarcastic,
- 5:39disdainful, insulting, and said he was making sure the police
- 5:42weren't doing anything bad. In a video of him addressing one
- 5:45of the incidents, he said he was trying to teach the cop about
- 5:48the law. I know that police training is
- 5:50lacking, to say the least. But outside of that, you can
- 5:53tell that rebuilding Atlantis truly feels like he knows more
- 5:56than authority figures, especially when you remember
- 5:59that he references basic government functions like zoning
- 6:02laws as evidence that we live in a in a dictatorship, writes Jem
- 6:05Blackthorne for Medium. So it was in this same month in
- 6:08December 2023 when he started saying that we need to start a
- 6:12revolution. And he started inviting people
- 6:15to join him on his land for free.
- 6:17And basically was like, just bring your stuff and you can
- 6:19live on my land for free. You know, I won't provide things
- 6:23for you, but if you bring your tent or whatever, like you can
- 6:26live here. So people have been doing it.
- 6:27I'll get into a little bit of that.
- 6:29But so in order to apply to live on his land, which he calls
- 6:33Atlanta, this, you need to subscribe to his TikTok, not
- 6:37follow, but subscribe, which cost 599 a month, so basically
- 6:41$6. He will accept your messages and
- 6:43you can discuss moving there once you have subscribed.
- 6:46And he said he's put up this kind of roadblock as he started
- 6:49getting or this barrier because he started getting all of these
- 6:52messages from people without this kind of barrier to entry.
- 6:55And a lot of them were not taking it seriously.
- 6:58So now if you are paying him money, he will accept your
- 7:01messages. Blackthorne writes for Medium,
- 7:02quote, rebuilding Atlantis is attracting residents by touching
- 7:05on prevalent frustrations. The rent is too high.
- 7:08The system is oppressive. He says he is constantly dealing
- 7:11with police harassment and TikTok restrictions because they
- 7:15don't like what he's doing. They're afraid of what he's
- 7:17doing, and they're afraid of what he stands for.
- 7:19He explains this in his January 5th, 2024 video, where he also
- 7:22says, quote, I can't do it any longer.
- 7:25I can't take this oppressive system.
- 7:26I can't do it anymore. In a tone that sounds more like
- 7:29a plea for help than an audio manifesto.
- 7:32In January 2024, the first man moved to Atlantis.
- 7:36By the end of March, there was another man who had come to the
- 7:40land. And over the last, you know, I
- 7:43guess 10 months, more people have started coming, including
- 7:46some women now. So some of the criticism he's
- 7:49received, aside from like the Colts accusations is that he's
- 7:52clearly starting to love the followers and the fame because
- 7:56he references it a lot. And he complaints about things
- 7:59like TikTok bans and, you know, shadow banning and things like
- 8:03that. This is starting to people
- 8:04because I would say like the general consensus is that this
- 8:07was created with good intentions.
- 8:10This man seemed to be like creating Atlantis quote UN quote
- 8:14with good intentions. But now it seems like, which I
- 8:17think is probably how cults, a lot of cults start now that he's
- 8:21like kind of doing the thing and he is gaining a bit of a
- 8:24following doing it. And he is seeing the benefits of
- 8:27that, like the fame, the money, the attention, the success.
- 8:32Like that is starting. People are worried it's going to
- 8:34like start going to his head because he's already shown signs
- 8:37of that. But now there is a woman who
- 8:39lives there who has a bit of a following as well.
- 8:42So one of the residents, she's been documenting her experience
- 8:45and on TikTok, she is visionary Empress.
- 8:48She has almost 50, 50,000 followers and people are kind of
- 8:51following along with this too. Again, her followers are
- 8:53expressing concern about her living there.
- 8:57But yeah, like, the general consensus of this is like, it is
- 9:00a fascinating thing to follow and to watch.
- 9:03But a lot of people are like, I can't believe that I'm here
- 9:05before the Netflix documentary. Like a lot of people think this
- 9:09is going to be another kind of like 7 M TikTok cult vibe that
- 9:13we saw turn into some documentary, kind of like
- 9:16Unravel, get a bit out of control.
- 9:19And I don't know, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
- 9:23All right. And the last story that I have
- 9:25for you guys is that Rosanna Pansino is facing a lot of
- 9:29backlash from various influencers after her recent
- 9:32videos and posts exposing Mr. Beast.
- 9:35OK, so for a quick refresher, Rosanna recently made a video
- 9:38where she was sharing like inappropriate messages that were
- 9:42allegedly shared in Mr. Beast's like work chat amongst different
- 9:47employees. And the video was titled Mr.
- 9:50Beast knew all all along 1000 leaked messages.
- 9:52She basically went through this work chat, alleged work chat on
- 9:55Telegram. I'm not going to get into the
- 9:58specifics because we did recently cover it, but she
- 10:00alleged that the members repeatedly made sexual memes
- 10:03about minors. And she also claimed that Ava
- 10:07Tyson, who was Mr. B's longtime friend and Co host, sent a
- 10:10message including a seemingly sexually explicit photo of a 13
- 10:14year old. Since then, Rosanna has received
- 10:16backlash from the likes of Logan Paul and Keemstar.
- 10:18Now keep in mind Logan Paul and Keemstar, OK?
- 10:24Like I want to cover this story in its entirety because she has
- 10:28responded and stuff, but like, keep in mind who she's receiving
- 10:30backlash from, OK? So in a TikTok posted last week,
- 10:34Logan Paul, who is one of the founders of Lunch Lee alongside
- 10:37KSI and Mr. Beast, took to the platform to address the rumor
- 10:41that some Lunch Lee kits have been recalled, which he
- 10:44maintains is not the truth. He also came for Rosanna in the
- 10:48TikTok, calling her quote, an attention hungry little clout
- 10:52goblin who has made it her entire identity to speak
- 10:55negatively on all things Mr. Beast.
- 10:57OK. Meanwhile, Keemstar has
- 10:59criticized Rosanna for her video on the Mr. Beast work chat
- 11:03trying to discredit her and her claims.
- 11:06He alleged that the chat Rosanna shared was not actually a work
- 11:09chat, but were quote screenshots of the meme chat that were
- 11:12definitely not work related at all.
- 11:14In a video posted to Twitter, he added that Rosanna also was not
- 11:17truthful when she alleged that a sexually explicit photo of a
- 11:20minor was shared in the chat. Quote this whole video and all
- 11:23these allegations were designed to destroy Mr. Beast career and
- 11:26his reputation online and they were false.
- 11:29The whole thing, he said. OK, I mean, first of all,
- 11:31whether it was actually a work chat or not, I don't know if
- 11:35that makes that any better because Mr. Beast was still
- 11:38allegedly in that chat and a bunch of his employees were
- 11:41still in that chat. So even if it wasn't like a
- 11:43company owned Slack channel or something, they were still
- 11:46apparently sharing these like very inappropriate messages,
- 11:49borderline criminal messages. So I don't know if that makes a
- 11:53huge difference. But Rosanna has since come
- 11:55forward to defend herself in a series of posts on Twitter.
- 11:59In one post she wrote quote. Multiple people from these chats
- 12:02have confirmed they were work chats and they discussed work
- 12:05often. I've attached a few examples
- 12:08with some insurance fraud as well.
- 12:10I honestly didn't think the Gooner gang Keemstar and his
- 12:13attack puppies would band together to defend pedo jokes in
- 12:17the Mr. Beast main Telegram chat, but here we are.
- 12:20Side note, I've heard from multiple sources that Keemstar
- 12:23is in business with Mr. Beast in an undisclosed partnership.
- 12:28That would be tea. The creators are all still going
- 12:30back and forth together so I'm sure more will come out.
- 12:34If there's any other updates I will let you guys know.
- 12:37But that's that. That's the update.
- 12:40I swear almost every day there is a Mr. Beast update and I'm
- 12:43sorry, I don't want to be giving you these updates either.
- 12:48OK guys, that is it for today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 12:51I love you guys. Please rate review and
- 12:53subscribe. It means so much to me.
- 12:55Please Spotify star rate, we're trying to get our Spotify
- 12:57reviews app. I love you guys and I will talk
- 12:59to you tomorrow. Bye.
