- 1:35Speaker 3: Lee for any of the updates. Lisa and Hollis, so
- 1:44Speaker 3: interesting interesting situation today. We now have football.
- 1:52Speaker 4: Okay, we we we finally finally have football.
- 1:57Speaker 3: But Hollis, there's there's some legal there's some how did
- 2:02Speaker 3: we get here? You, being the man who knows all
- 2:05Speaker 3: the legal pieces to this, help everybody who's listening explain
- 2:12Speaker 3: to them how we got back to this place.
- 2:15Speaker 5: Okay, so today the Supreme Court of the Western Supreme
- 2:19Speaker 5: Court finally made their decisions, and basically how we got here.
- 2:22Speaker 5: We had injunction again, we had the whole playoff Tobacco.
- 2:25Speaker 5: I'm sure everybody who's listening or aware of Hopston Sports
- 2:28Speaker 5: in West Virginia is aware of that. As far as
- 2:30Speaker 5: like the reclass system, and it kind of screwed up
- 2:33Speaker 5: the point system and they didn't kind of know where
- 2:37Speaker 5: to go far as cding and placing people who should
- 2:39Speaker 5: be in the playoffs who should not be in the
- 2:40Speaker 5: playoffs in the four divisions. So from that we had
- 2:44Speaker 5: injunctions fouled in Wood County, we had injunctions filed in
- 2:47Speaker 5: Mason County, and I even think there was more injunctions
- 2:51Speaker 5: to be found, but the main ones were in Wood
- 2:53Speaker 5: in Mason County. Basically in Wood County they wanted the
- 2:58Speaker 5: point system changed, and Mason County they wanted to play
- 3:01Speaker 5: in game. And the wv SSAC they found a rint
- 3:06Speaker 5: of prohibition of those injunctions. So basically what they wanted
- 3:11Speaker 5: to do was just, hey, squash those injunctions that were
- 3:14Speaker 5: ruled in those county circuit courts and just come back
- 3:17Speaker 5: to the original format that we laid out as a
- 3:19Speaker 5: wv SA SAC. So today, I think it was today
- 3:22Speaker 5: or yesterday, the Supreme Court finally made the ruling which
- 3:26Speaker 5: kind of held up the playoffs for the past week
- 3:28Speaker 5: week and a half. And basically the Supreme Court they
- 3:31Speaker 5: have some case law president, so basically what they said
- 3:35Speaker 5: is a general rule the court should not interfere with
- 3:38Speaker 5: the internal affairs of school activities, commissions or associations. So
- 3:43Speaker 5: basically what that means is that as a general rule
- 3:47Speaker 5: to court, they basically the wv S SAC has carte
- 3:51Speaker 5: blanche to do as they will as far as reclassification
- 3:54Speaker 5: far as the points system, and they can lay it
- 3:56Speaker 5: out however they be in best for this. Just to
- 4:01Speaker 5: give you some more context than this is directly from
- 4:04Speaker 5: the Supreme Court ruling. The order that was issued again,
- 4:08Speaker 5: I think it was today or yesterday, and this is quote.
- 4:11Speaker 5: We have repeatedly held that the manner in which the
- 4:14Speaker 5: WVSSA applies its rule is not subject to the judicial review.
- 4:20Speaker 5: Decisions properly within the purview of the legislative grant of
- 4:24Speaker 5: authority of the wv SSA seek under the West Virginia Code.
- 4:29Speaker 5: I won't give you the code number. Are not subject
- 4:31Speaker 5: to judicial review. End quote. It's based on commission of
- 4:35Speaker 5: the Webster case. It took place in twenty eleven. So again,
- 4:40Speaker 5: this was fairly simple ruling. This is playing language. I mean,
- 4:43Speaker 5: this is you know, these legal documents can be very,
- 4:47Speaker 5: very complex to understand, but this was one of the
- 4:49Speaker 5: more simpler ones from the West Virginia Supreme Court. So
- 4:53Speaker 5: basically said, hey, WVSSC is within their authority to do
- 4:58Speaker 5: as they will longest where long as they're acting within
- 5:01Speaker 5: the legislative of boundaries of their duty.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Okay, So any other me, being the simplest person in
- 5:08Speaker 3: the room, I'm so what you're telling me iss SAC
- 5:14Speaker 3: can do really basically whatever they want.
- 5:17Speaker 6: That's what I think as.
- 5:18Speaker 3: And nobody can necessarily criticize, critique it.
- 5:24Speaker 5: Well long or what long, as long as they're not
- 5:28Speaker 5: acting outside of the scope of their authority. So and
- 5:32Speaker 5: I and I'm guessing from what this says is that
- 5:35Speaker 5: far as reclassifying, far as what point system is going
- 5:39Speaker 5: to be used, and all that, that's within their escort,
- 5:42Speaker 5: within the authority of the w E, S, S a C. Now,
- 5:45Speaker 5: if they go outside of that, then it's subject to
- 5:47Speaker 5: be reviewed by court. The longest they're acting within the
- 5:50Speaker 5: scope of their authority, you know, it is what it
- 5:53Speaker 5: is at this point. So I mean and and and again,
- 5:57Speaker 5: them setting rules, them telling who can be in a
- 6:00Speaker 5: them using them saying what number, excuse me, what point system,
- 6:04Speaker 5: the mathematics and all that that's within the scope. So
- 6:08Speaker 5: they're they're allowed to do it.
- 6:09Speaker 6: Okay.
- 6:10Speaker 7: So I understand the ruling, and I understand that, you know,
- 6:13Speaker 7: they have the authority to to change and and do
- 6:16Speaker 7: things that will My question is, how does it go
- 6:19Speaker 7: on this long? How were there so many injunctions filed
- 6:21Speaker 7: in so many counties with judges that had no knowledge
- 6:26Speaker 7: of this type of you know, I guess I want
- 6:31Speaker 7: to say, this type of effect they have that the
- 6:34Speaker 7: w V S s a C. Has say and whatever
- 6:36Speaker 7: they want to do. They can do whatever they want
- 6:38Speaker 7: and no one can really stop them. Why couldn't any
- 6:40Speaker 7: other judge see that and put a stop to all
- 6:43Speaker 7: this earlier before it got to this point.
- 6:47Speaker 5: That is an excellent question. And as I've read the document,
- 6:50Speaker 5: that's I'm telling you, as as I'm reading this document,
- 6:53Speaker 5: that's the exact same thing I came up with. But
- 6:56Speaker 5: but but I would say, and I and I hesitate
- 7:00Speaker 5: to say as a political matter, but I would say,
- 7:03Speaker 5: those judges are acting in the best interests of the
- 7:06Speaker 5: people in which they serving that county. You see what
- 7:09Speaker 5: I'm saying. So I think they're they're they're they're thinking
- 7:12Speaker 5: of it from that purview and not looking at it holistically,
- 7:16Speaker 5: regarding of what the powers that the UH to the
- 7:22Speaker 5: w B S s a C has or may not have.
- 7:25Speaker 5: And in addition, you know, this isn't necessarily a common
- 7:27Speaker 5: law state, so things aren't necessarily ruled necessarily legislatively. First
- 7:33Speaker 5: you know, judges in some instances can't set precedence. However,
- 7:37Speaker 5: you know, again, when it goes to the highest court,
- 7:40Speaker 5: they're gonna they're gonna look at it from a holistic
- 7:42Speaker 5: view and not you know, from the view of the
- 7:44Speaker 5: county in which they.
- 7:44Speaker 3: Said, hollis okay me again, I'm looking at the athlete, okay.
- 7:53Speaker 3: And when I when I'm thinking about a sport that
- 7:58Speaker 3: pretty much did every thing possible for me, right and
- 8:04Speaker 3: I had coaches who yelled and screamed and told me
- 8:06Speaker 3: to do this, told me to do that.
- 8:07Speaker 4: I didn't want to do any of those things.
- 8:10Speaker 3: I've done them right like, because that's the structure of it.
- 8:15Speaker 3: To me, when I'm looking at football and listening to
- 8:19Speaker 3: even the legal side of football, I'm like, I didn't
- 8:22Speaker 3: even know there was a legal side necessarily, you know
- 8:24Speaker 3: what I'm saying. Like it never that never, it never
- 8:29Speaker 3: got there. When I was playing, it was just playing ball.
- 8:33Speaker 3: And I'm looking at this situation and I'm trying to
- 8:35Speaker 3: figure out as a student athlete. Now I'm thinking, Okay,
- 8:41Speaker 3: now I got a game. I didn't have a game
- 8:44Speaker 3: last week. Do I know what happened? Do I know
- 8:46Speaker 3: why I don't have a game, and now all of
- 8:48Speaker 3: a sudden, I'm getting ready to go to basketball, but
- 8:51Speaker 3: you know what, I gotta play. I got a football
- 8:53Speaker 3: game this week. How like, how does that? I just
- 8:56Speaker 3: don't know. I'm not really asking you this as a
- 8:59Speaker 3: true question, but this is what bothers me. I just
- 9:02Speaker 3: don't see how we are teaching the young athletes the
- 9:06Speaker 3: proper structure, the proper lessons that they were supposed to
- 9:10Speaker 3: learn and supposed to get from the sport man.
- 9:13Speaker 4: I just don't I.
- 9:14Speaker 5: Just don't think, well, you know what, I think it's
- 9:17Speaker 5: expanded at this point, right because I think what athletes
- 9:20Speaker 5: are learning now is that things are as much as
- 9:22Speaker 5: we you know, have our you know, integrity, as much
- 9:26Speaker 5: as we have the lessons that we learned on the
- 9:29Speaker 5: court or on the field, on the court, off the field,
- 9:31Speaker 5: off the court. That there's also a political side to
- 9:34Speaker 5: this that I don't think necessarily we were pretty to
- 9:38Speaker 5: when we played because it wasn't it was kind of
- 9:40Speaker 5: kept behind called doors, who didn't get as much publicity.
- 9:43Speaker 5: But now everything's sort of out Nope, So I think
- 9:45Speaker 5: you know, it's you know, we're adding lessons if you
- 9:48Speaker 5: if you will, and these are tough lessons because the
- 9:51Speaker 5: thing that bothered me the most about this is that
- 9:53Speaker 5: when I look at schools like Capital, when I look
- 9:56Speaker 5: at schools like Saint Aubus who were told that they
- 9:58Speaker 5: were going to be or had the glimmer of hope
- 10:00Speaker 5: that they made the playoffs, and then they have to
- 10:02Speaker 5: walk that back. The kids were ready, I'm sure they
- 10:05Speaker 5: were practicing, and they were excited about another opportunity, another
- 10:08Speaker 5: bite at the apple. But now that's not going to happen, right. Well,
- 10:11Speaker 5: I think that's the thing that bothers me the most
- 10:13Speaker 5: about this.
- 10:14Speaker 7: Well, and I'll tell you another aspect of it that
- 10:16Speaker 7: really bothered me and Carl and I had this conversation
- 10:18Speaker 7: before we came on air, Hollis was the fact that
- 10:22Speaker 7: there was a playing game scheduled for Tuesday evening, according
- 10:25Speaker 7: to one of the injunctions, I think the one in
- 10:27Speaker 7: Wood County correct, and I'm sorry. Mason and Tulsa and
- 10:32Speaker 7: Saint Mary's were scheduled to play a playing game last night,
- 10:36Speaker 7: Tuesday evening at Herbert Hoover High School. But then the
- 10:39Speaker 7: Supreme Court ruling came out about two hours before the kickoff,
- 10:43Speaker 7: of course, and Saint Mary's was already in Elkview before
- 10:47Speaker 7: being sent home.
- 10:49Speaker 5: So.
- 10:51Speaker 7: Why would that even be on the table if the
- 10:54Speaker 7: ruling had Like, why would the coach take his team
- 10:57Speaker 7: travel to Elkview, you know, tell their tell us team
- 11:01Speaker 7: we're going to do this playing game when the ruling
- 11:03Speaker 7: hadn't really come out yet. I mean, you talk about
- 11:06Speaker 7: broken hearts going back to to you know, back to
- 11:08Speaker 7: their hometown. That's a that's a hard lesson. If we're
- 11:12Speaker 7: going to talk about hard lessons to learn.
- 11:13Speaker 3: And how do you and how do you how do
- 11:16Speaker 3: you readjust and get ready to play that game?
- 11:19Speaker 4: Three days later? Four days later?
- 11:21Speaker 5: The ain't no game.
- 11:22Speaker 4: Now right right there?
- 11:24Speaker 5: Yeah, one of the teams is done. So one of
- 11:26Speaker 5: them thieves has told me out a lot of other
- 11:28Speaker 5: ones probably in right, yeah, I think.
- 11:31Speaker 4: And that's crushing. That's crushing.
- 11:33Speaker 3: That is crushing to a team, the individual players who
- 11:38Speaker 3: thought that they were in and now someone's going to
- 11:40Speaker 3: tell them they're not playing.
- 11:42Speaker 7: And I do hope, I do hope, Paula, is that
- 11:44Speaker 7: the head coach told them, you know up front, hey guys,
- 11:47Speaker 7: we're going to make this trip. There's no guarantee, you
- 11:50Speaker 7: know that we're going. But but you know, they had
- 11:52Speaker 7: to have their hopes up. They're on a bus, they're
- 11:54Speaker 7: headed to elk Fu. They're gonna they're you know, they're thinking, okay,
- 11:57Speaker 7: if we if we've gone this far, we're.
- 11:59Speaker 6: Probably going to play right.
- 12:02Speaker 3: I mean to me, I look at that, like, no,
- 12:04Speaker 3: if we're if we're getting on the bus. Everything about
- 12:08Speaker 3: this bus and this bus ride is we're playing a game.
- 12:12Speaker 5: And everything was tentative though, so nothing nothing far as
- 12:16Speaker 5: the playing games, everything, all the information that came out,
- 12:20Speaker 5: it all stated very.
- 12:21Speaker 4: You don't get on the bus.
- 12:23Speaker 3: You're not You're not you know, you don't get on
- 12:25Speaker 3: the bus and and head somewhere and be tenanted.
- 12:27Speaker 6: So who missed the memo?
- 12:29Speaker 7: I mean, like, what, what's the head coach? Maybe of
- 12:31Speaker 7: Saint Mary's confused because you know.
- 12:34Speaker 5: Like, I don't think. I think what happened is that
- 12:36Speaker 5: they just had to go ahead and prepare it. They
- 12:38Speaker 5: had to. I think what their mindset and and again
- 12:41Speaker 5: I'm not speaking for them, I'm just you know, thinking
- 12:43Speaker 5: out loud. Their mindset had to be like, well, look,
- 12:47Speaker 5: you know it's tentitive and this is the schedule, so
- 12:49Speaker 5: we need to go ahead. And get prepared to play,
- 12:51Speaker 5: so because we don't want to say, we don't want
- 12:53Speaker 5: to sit at home and not play and not travel
- 12:55Speaker 5: and not do the things. And then the report, then
- 12:57Speaker 5: the Supreme Court ruler comes out and said, hey, we're
- 12:59Speaker 5: gon and follow the Mason County injunction. So I think
- 13:02Speaker 5: they were just they had to go regardless of kind
- 13:05Speaker 5: of what happened. And I'm sure those coaches in the
- 13:07Speaker 5: administration let the team know that, hey, this is Tendaby anyway.
- 13:12Speaker 6: That's a tough point.
- 13:14Speaker 3: I don't know how to be tentatively prepared for a
- 13:17Speaker 3: football game. I just I don't know how a coach
- 13:21Speaker 3: makes that case. And I don't think he made that case.
- 13:24Speaker 3: I think he thought that there was a game and
- 13:27Speaker 3: we're traveling to it. There's there's no way, man, there's
- 13:30Speaker 3: no there's no way.
- 13:31Speaker 5: But I'm saying but but I think he had to
- 13:34Speaker 5: know or administrate. I won't put it all on the coach.
- 13:36Speaker 5: I would say the athletic directors and administration had to know, like, look,
- 13:41Speaker 5: this is sort of a fifty to fifty deal. Because
- 13:43Speaker 5: the ruling has it came out. So because the ruling
- 13:45Speaker 5: has it came out, and it was being delayed so
- 13:47Speaker 5: much that hey, we need to go ahead and get
- 13:49Speaker 5: prepared to play this game. But there's also a chance
- 13:51Speaker 5: that this might not happen. Okay, So I think they
- 13:53Speaker 5: had to know that, and I think they had to
- 13:55Speaker 5: communicate that to the parents and everybody. But all that all,
- 14:00Speaker 5: but even with all that, it still doesn't disappoint least,
- 14:03Speaker 5: I means, still hurts. You know, it's.
- 14:05Speaker 7: Devastated, right, And wouldn't you think coll Us even if
- 14:08Speaker 7: they had come out and upheld that ruling and the
- 14:10Speaker 7: playing games were going to happen, they probably wouldn't have
- 14:13Speaker 7: played them last night. They probably would have rescheduled for
- 14:17Speaker 7: tonight or even tomorrow night. Correct, I mean, give them notice,
- 14:21Speaker 7: wouldn't they?
- 14:22Speaker 5: Yeah? Yeah, But I think if they were all on
- 14:24Speaker 5: the bus getting prepared to play, I think they was
- 14:26Speaker 5: just I think they would have probably just went ahead
- 14:28Speaker 5: and knocked it out. But because again I don't know
- 14:31Speaker 5: if the Supreme Court would have had any say when. Yeah,
- 14:36Speaker 5: they spoke on when the game should be played out,
- 14:39Speaker 5: But I think what we can do, and again, because
- 14:42Speaker 5: this says it, it says, you know, the decision properly
- 14:46Speaker 5: within the purview of legislative Grand Authority of the WB
- 14:50Speaker 5: S SAC. I think we need to move forward, look
- 14:53Speaker 5: at that legislative authority, see exactly what that is, and
- 14:57Speaker 5: how can that be better worded? How can that be better? Uh,
- 15:03Speaker 5: how can that let's say, the authority maybe be restricted
- 15:07Speaker 5: or maybe be expanded so stuff like this does not
- 15:10Speaker 5: happen again, because this has been like I said, wester
- 15:13Speaker 5: Unior High school football this season and again, as far
- 15:17Speaker 5: as I can remember, this is the worst just overall
- 15:21Speaker 5: season that I've ever experienced in West Virginia high school football.
- 15:24Speaker 5: I mean, it's been absolutely dreadful and now and again
- 15:27Speaker 5: I'm not talking about the players or the performances. I'm
- 15:29Speaker 5: just saying, with all this stuff in the mix, it's
- 15:31Speaker 5: almost unwatchable.
- 15:33Speaker 4: And and and hollis to to your point.
- 15:35Speaker 3: I had this conversation earlier today with a couple of
- 15:38Speaker 3: a couple of different people in conversation and talking about, Okay,
- 15:45Speaker 3: let's just be real, where is football?
- 15:47Speaker 4: Where is football going? Where is it going?
- 15:51Speaker 3: How how does it get like quote other sports like
- 15:55Speaker 3: you don't have all these issues. Every time we get
- 15:58Speaker 3: to a new football season, year after year after year,
- 16:01Speaker 3: it just seems to get crazier every year, and and and.
- 16:07Speaker 4: The question becomes, Okay, so who is in charge of that?
- 16:10Speaker 4: Is that? Is that the s SAC, is that the coaches,
- 16:13Speaker 4: is that the parents?
- 16:14Speaker 7: Is that they they rain, They're totally in charge.
- 16:20Speaker 6: And here's a question I'll throw to both of you guys.
- 16:23Speaker 7: So now that they've got this basically free pass to
- 16:27Speaker 7: do what they like with the point system, are they
- 16:31Speaker 7: going to do anything? I mean, are they just going
- 16:33Speaker 7: to be like, Okay, well this is you know, we
- 16:34Speaker 7: can do whatever we want. We're gonna see if this
- 16:36Speaker 7: works again next year.
- 16:37Speaker 5: Look my thing is and if you don't mind, I'll
- 16:39Speaker 5: go ahead and go like, you have to change it,
- 16:42Speaker 5: Like I'm looking at the playoff schedule like this has
- 16:45Speaker 5: to change. I'm looking at the playoff schedule for Quada.
- 16:48Speaker 5: You have two, not one, but you have Hecks Build
- 16:53Speaker 5: they are eight in the playoffs. I know you have
- 16:57Speaker 5: Muscleming two and eight in the playoffs. You have University
- 17:00Speaker 5: four and six, you have Parkersburg four and six, you
- 17:04Speaker 5: have Capital Midlands five and five. So basically you got one, two, three,
- 17:08Speaker 5: four five teams in a playoffs with losing or uh
- 17:13Speaker 5: tied records. Like you excuse me, not five seven, but
- 17:18Speaker 5: that was in or losing records when you when.
- 17:21Speaker 7: You yeah, but it was inevitable when you only have
- 17:24Speaker 7: that many teams in a in a bracket or in
- 17:26Speaker 7: a classification, you're going to have teams that are, you know,
- 17:29Speaker 7: on the losing end of this of this, of their
- 17:32Speaker 7: records and and but that everybody makes the playoffs. They
- 17:35Speaker 7: had to have known when they created this that that
- 17:38Speaker 7: was going to be part of the problem that was
- 17:39Speaker 7: going to happen.
- 17:41Speaker 5: They necessarily create this, but what happens is they had it.
- 17:44Speaker 5: They had that. I think it was originally twenty eight
- 17:46Speaker 5: teams in quality, and then the injunctions from that, from
- 17:50Speaker 5: the teams getting reclassed and everything like that, then that
- 17:53Speaker 5: brought it down the sixteen. So I think they're going
- 17:55Speaker 5: to have to figure out a way again. They made
- 17:58Speaker 5: the structure about how they determine which team's going with
- 18:02Speaker 5: class a little bit vague and it left too much
- 18:05Speaker 5: room for interpretations. So now they're gonna have to tighten that,
- 18:09Speaker 5: and they're gonna have to at least you you're gonna
- 18:11Speaker 5: have to at least get twenty five teams in Quada
- 18:14Speaker 5: at the very least. So the lead.
- 18:17Speaker 3: Okay, but okay, so let's say we get twenty five teams,
- 18:19Speaker 3: so it's one gonna play twenty five because at this
- 18:21Speaker 3: point play but in quad but in Kuada. Okay, right
- 18:26Speaker 3: now it's one versus sixteen? Really yeah, one versus sixteen?
- 18:31Speaker 3: Am I going to that game?
- 18:33Speaker 5: Like nobody's going to that?
- 18:35Speaker 7: Well?
- 18:36Speaker 6: How many guys?
- 18:37Speaker 4: I mean, I mean.
- 18:38Speaker 6: The fans of the two guitar?
- 18:40Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 18:41Speaker 3: But but but that's that's not like if to me,
- 18:45Speaker 3: playoffs is not it.
- 18:47Speaker 4: It doesn't have to be included. It shouldn't be inclusive.
- 18:50Speaker 4: It should be play.
- 18:52Speaker 3: You gotta there's a there's a limit that you or
- 18:54Speaker 3: there's a there's a mountain that you have to climb
- 18:56Speaker 3: to get into the playoffs. That matters if you start
- 18:59Speaker 3: this and the sixteen teams and you know, even if
- 19:02Speaker 3: you're sixteen, you're going to be playing in the playoffs.
- 19:05Speaker 4: No, that can't. That can't. That can't be.
- 19:08Speaker 7: Well, what's gonna happen is they're going to go back
- 19:10Speaker 7: to their original plan, which was what you said, hollis
- 19:12Speaker 7: twenty eight teams in quade.
- 19:14Speaker 5: I think I think it was twenty eight teams.
- 19:17Speaker 7: And you know what these schools aren't going to be
- 19:18Speaker 7: happy about it because you know these schools that filed
- 19:21Speaker 7: in junctions and wanted to move back a class or
- 19:23Speaker 7: what they're going to have to do with the WVSSAC says,
- 19:26Speaker 7: because they're king of the land, they can do whatever they.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Are we going to have enough? Are we going to
- 19:30Speaker 3: have enough teams? So let's say what they did before?
- 19:33Speaker 4: Right, they did, but they only had three divisions. But
- 19:37Speaker 4: they only had three divisions.
- 19:38Speaker 5: Here's the thing. It's one hundred and fourteen total teams
- 19:42Speaker 5: in the state of West Virginia that played football. If
- 19:44Speaker 5: you have four divisions, that's a that's approximately twenty eight
- 19:47Speaker 5: teams in the four divisions. One division would have probably
- 19:51Speaker 5: twenty nine or something to that effect. So if they
- 19:53Speaker 5: just took it, and you just took the enrollment numbers,
- 19:56Speaker 5: and you said who the top of the enrollment all
- 19:58Speaker 5: the way to the bottom, and you just start opping
- 20:00Speaker 5: it off to twenty eight So these top twenty eighteen,
- 20:03Speaker 5: that's that's quaudi this and it goes right down the line.
- 20:06Speaker 5: So and the shit, and again you base it on
- 20:09Speaker 5: enroll in numbers, so it's no room for interpretation. This
- 20:13Speaker 5: is the enrollment number and that's it.
- 20:15Speaker 6: But do you think they'll do that? Do you think
- 20:18Speaker 6: they're abandoned?
- 20:19Speaker 5: Okay, yeah, you're right, all right, you can't have twenty,
- 20:22Speaker 5: you can't have sixteen teams in a division, or or
- 20:26Speaker 5: you're going to have to just lower the playoff number.
- 20:28Speaker 5: Instead of sixteen, it would be twelve.
- 20:30Speaker 4: Yes, yes, see, I don't see.
- 20:33Speaker 3: That's where I'm at. I don't think everybody gets into
- 20:36Speaker 3: the playoffs.
- 20:37Speaker 4: I just don't. I just don't. I just don't see that.
- 20:41Speaker 7: And they should have had the foresight to do that,
- 20:43Speaker 7: don't you think Guys before playoffs roll around, when they
- 20:47Speaker 7: saw there were only sixteen teams, they should have said,
- 20:49Speaker 7: Okay for Quada, we're going to do ten twelve.
- 20:51Speaker 5: Yeah, that should have been Again, they got the thority
- 20:56Speaker 5: to do.
- 20:56Speaker 7: That, right, right, Well, they can do whatever they want
- 20:58Speaker 7: now obviously. Oh yeah, it's gonna be it's gonna be
- 21:01Speaker 7: interesting in the off season.
- 21:03Speaker 3: And and I don't know, I don't know if I've
- 21:07Speaker 3: ever seen a situation to where an organization and this
- 21:12Speaker 3: is not specifically targeted at s SAC, but I'm not
- 21:16Speaker 3: sure I've ever seen or heard it's set out loud
- 21:22Speaker 3: that somebody has total control that's like, you know what
- 21:26Speaker 3: I'm saying, Like I don't like.
- 21:27Speaker 5: As a misnomery. I want to I want to make
- 21:29Speaker 5: sure we're clear on that. They don't have total control. Well,
- 21:33Speaker 5: they have control within the within the authority in which
- 21:36Speaker 5: they were granted. So if they stepped outside it, just
- 21:38Speaker 5: like what happened at the beginning of the season when
- 21:41Speaker 5: they made this old weird complex you know, rating system
- 21:46Speaker 5: to figure out which school's going with confert or excuse me,
- 21:48Speaker 5: with classification. That was sort of outside of what they
- 21:52Speaker 5: could do, and they made it and they left too much.
- 21:53Speaker 5: They were too vague, right, So they have control within
- 21:56Speaker 5: the prayer view of their authority, you know what I'm saying.
- 21:59Speaker 5: So I want to make they're clear.
- 22:00Speaker 3: But do we know though who knows what that where?
- 22:04Speaker 3: That authority is it?
- 22:07Speaker 5: But it's legislatively granted. So if you look at and
- 22:10Speaker 5: again it's it's West Virginia Code eighteen two twenty five.
- 22:14Speaker 5: If you're looking as codes, you're looking within the w
- 22:16Speaker 5: visit at WVSSAC rulebook. That will lay out, which I'm
- 22:21Speaker 5: not that be two labors and that'd be two points,
- 22:23Speaker 5: so that lays out their authority within those documents.
- 22:28Speaker 7: I don't know about you, guys, but it kind of
- 22:31Speaker 7: leaves a bad taste in my mouth knowing that pretty
- 22:34Speaker 7: much all these injunctions were filed and and and all
- 22:36Speaker 7: these judges said this and that, and then all of
- 22:39Speaker 7: a sudden, the Supreme Court steps in and says, hey,
- 22:42Speaker 7: guess what, they're in charge.
- 22:44Speaker 6: You're not.
- 22:44Speaker 7: You have no authority here, and they're they're allowed to
- 22:47Speaker 7: do this within reason.
- 22:49Speaker 6: I mean, I don't I don't know.
- 22:50Speaker 4: I don't like.
- 22:51Speaker 6: It went on too long. It went on too long.
- 22:53Speaker 7: And then for all of a sudden they they say, okay,
- 22:56Speaker 7: well you know what, forget it that they're in charge
- 22:58Speaker 7: and these injunctions none of them are legitimate. And to me,
- 23:01Speaker 7: that's a lot of money, time, heartbreak, all the things,
- 23:05Speaker 7: all all the fields wrapped into one, because it's just
- 23:09Speaker 7: not a good look.
- 23:09Speaker 3: Well, couldn't you have if you knew that they had
- 23:12Speaker 3: that authority exactly the moment that it came to you,
- 23:15Speaker 3: you could to say, well, look, we don't necessarily have
- 23:18Speaker 3: this power. This is really the s sac So whatever
- 23:22Speaker 3: they decide to do, you all got to do.
- 23:24Speaker 5: Well. I think again, if I'm a sit and judge,
- 23:27Speaker 5: and if I'm in Kannall County, and I have these
- 23:30Speaker 5: schools capital, and I have Saint Albans who has a
- 23:34Speaker 5: legitimate claim or at least I feel like legitimate, or
- 23:37Speaker 5: now I feel like it's a legit. They have a
- 23:39Speaker 5: legitimate king, and I represent Kanall County and or as
- 23:43Speaker 5: a judicial officer. It's like I'm almost obligated to challenge it. Again,
- 23:48Speaker 5: I may get shot down. I made my ruler. I'm
- 23:52Speaker 5: obligated to challenge that on behalf of the citizens and
- 23:55Speaker 5: constituents of which I represent.
- 23:56Speaker 4: Okay, I get that again. That's why you're the legal man.
- 24:01Speaker 5: Because to me, as a political matter, you know what
- 24:03Speaker 5: I mean? Like that, that would look crazy if I.
- 24:05Speaker 7: Didn't h well, I just hated.
- 24:11Speaker 6: I hate it for the boys that travel to you.
- 24:14Speaker 6: I think the mast the mast.
- 24:17Speaker 4: And I'm going to ask you both this question.
- 24:23Speaker 3: And take a minute to think about it, and and
- 24:27Speaker 3: then I'm really interested in in what your what your
- 24:30Speaker 3: response is. And I'll start that by saying, I do
- 24:34Speaker 3: not see I do not see football growing in our
- 24:41Speaker 3: say in the valley, maybe we can even reach out
- 24:44Speaker 3: over the state. I don't see our football structure being
- 24:51Speaker 3: something that is beneficial to all the kids. I don't
- 24:58Speaker 3: I don't feel like I don't feel like they're getting
- 25:02Speaker 3: what they're supposed to be getting out of this. This
- 25:04Speaker 3: is not about D one, This is not about you know,
- 25:08Speaker 3: making it to the pros or none of this. This
- 25:11Speaker 3: is about just simply the life lessons and the fun
- 25:16Speaker 3: and the challenges that come with winning and losing.
- 25:20Speaker 4: To me, I feel like.
- 25:23Speaker 3: We've lost that here, you know, and and and you
- 25:27Speaker 3: know I and I just would say that I feel
- 25:31Speaker 3: like it's it's being taken over by by individual kinds of.
- 25:38Speaker 6: People who who who have agendas, that.
- 25:42Speaker 3: Have an agenda, but you know, if they want to
- 25:45Speaker 3: win a championship as a coach, they want to they
- 25:47Speaker 3: want to do this, they want to do that, but
- 25:49Speaker 3: no one is really looking for that kid that's that's
- 25:52Speaker 3: sitting on the bench.
- 25:53Speaker 4: Who how do we get him better?
- 25:55Speaker 3: And I just feel like football has lost its direction
- 26:00Speaker 3: beyond any other sport out there.
- 26:03Speaker 4: That's just how I feel. And it's the sport that
- 26:06Speaker 4: I love, and.
- 26:08Speaker 3: I just think it's the worst sport participating with young kids,
- 26:15Speaker 3: whether it be youth football, whether it be high school football.
- 26:19Speaker 3: I mean, we have problems from top to bottom in
- 26:22Speaker 3: football in these areas, and.
- 26:27Speaker 4: Am I wrong? Am I wrong to feel that way?
- 26:30Speaker 5: I'll let you go ahead for at least oh boy, thank.
- 26:33Speaker 6: Thank you, holla so much.
- 26:34Speaker 7: Well, I think it goes back to just a minute
- 26:37Speaker 7: ago when I said, agendas, I think we've lost sight
- 26:39Speaker 7: of the sport of football is about the kids, the players,
- 26:43Speaker 7: and it seems like now we've kind of lost focus
- 26:47Speaker 7: of that, like what you're saying with the kid on
- 26:49Speaker 7: the bench. You know, with the transfer portal, it's messing
- 26:52Speaker 7: up the playing time for the kid on the bench
- 26:55Speaker 7: because you know, the marquee players, they go out there,
- 26:58Speaker 7: they play great, and then they say, oh, you know
- 27:00Speaker 7: there's greener grass over here.
- 27:02Speaker 6: I think I'm going to transfer over there.
- 27:04Speaker 7: And so the kids on the bench are left there
- 27:05Speaker 7: with a losing season, and it's kind of like it's
- 27:09Speaker 7: a reflection at high school especially, is a reflection of
- 27:11Speaker 7: what's happening happening at the collegiate level. You know, you're
- 27:15Speaker 7: having the teams that already have great programs and great
- 27:18Speaker 7: players getting more and more of that, and your teams
- 27:22Speaker 7: that are kind of in the shadows are sinking back
- 27:25Speaker 7: deeper and deeper.
- 27:26Speaker 6: So I'll agree with what you're saying.
- 27:29Speaker 7: But I think the main thing is we're losing focus
- 27:31Speaker 7: of what's best for the kids that are on the field,
- 27:35Speaker 7: and we're paying attention more to political agendas, personal agendas.
- 27:41Speaker 7: It's just not become focused on the kid, the student
- 27:43Speaker 7: athlete as much.
- 27:47Speaker 5: I would say that to me, and I would agree
- 27:50Speaker 5: with most of everything you gots said, but I would
- 27:54Speaker 5: say we lost the development within football, right that you know,
- 28:00Speaker 5: even back in the day, you know, as far as
- 28:01Speaker 5: I can remember, like we had two days during August,
- 28:04Speaker 5: so basically you would be in camp from you know,
- 28:07Speaker 5: basically middle school or junior high on, right, So you
- 28:10Speaker 5: have two days, we would have three of days you
- 28:11Speaker 5: would have meetings, right, So it allowed coaches that opportunity
- 28:15Speaker 5: to develop you as a player, as a man, and
- 28:18Speaker 5: so forth. And I think more than anything, that's what
- 28:23Speaker 5: we've lost, and that's what other sports of game. Right.
- 28:27Speaker 5: So we look at our soccer system and we've had
- 28:29Speaker 5: a conversation. We'll talk about that later day. When you
- 28:31Speaker 5: know soccer's taken over. When you look at you know,
- 28:34Speaker 5: sports like baseball, different things like that, I think it's
- 28:37Speaker 5: a room for development. We're taking kids five six, seven,
- 28:42Speaker 5: years old in football, and we don't have like a
- 28:46Speaker 5: T ball system right where you just see or we
- 28:49Speaker 5: don't have like stuff like that where it's just purely
- 28:51Speaker 5: development or buy ball where we're not worried about the score.
- 28:54Speaker 5: We're just saying, can you dribble and shoot? Right, So
- 28:56Speaker 5: we don't have anything like that within the football system, right,
- 29:00Speaker 5: because it's all about winning. It's not even necessarily even
- 29:04Speaker 5: about competing, because to your point, Lisa, if I'm transferring
- 29:08Speaker 5: from school to school, I'm not necessarily even competing within
- 29:11Speaker 5: the confines of my team. I'm just looking for the
- 29:13Speaker 5: best situation if it's me. So it's not even about
- 29:16Speaker 5: competing in competition. It strictly becomes winning. And when you're
- 29:21Speaker 5: focused on winning, particularly at those tender ages, you're losing
- 29:25Speaker 5: the development that needs to happen. So that way, when
- 29:29Speaker 5: you get to high school, when you get to college,
- 29:31Speaker 5: you already have a solid foundation, because I mean, I've
- 29:35Speaker 5: coached from Little league and I've coached to college, and
- 29:38Speaker 5: I can tell you like at every level that I've coached,
- 29:41Speaker 5: particularly as I got to and I surprisingly, you know,
- 29:44Speaker 5: high school in college, like we had to teach fundamentals
- 29:46Speaker 5: all over again. We had to, like really, and it's
- 29:49Speaker 5: not just like reinforcing those fundamentals.
- 29:51Speaker 4: It's like we gotta start from ground.
- 29:52Speaker 5: To fundamentally, starting from the ground up every time because
- 29:56Speaker 5: again a coach, but and again I feel bad for
- 29:59Speaker 5: these coaches because they're pressure cooking right, and they have
- 30:02Speaker 5: to go and they have to win at all levels.
- 30:05Speaker 5: And I mean the Little league coaches they're facing all
- 30:07Speaker 5: the way to the NFL coaches. So I think to
- 30:10Speaker 5: put a pin in it, it's development is what football's lacking.
- 30:15Speaker 3: All right, Well, ladies, gentlemen, let's take We're going to

- 31:55Speaker 3: prior to this one.
- 31:58Speaker 4: WVU and Marshall.
- 32:00Speaker 3: Now I am I am, I am the guy who
- 32:04Speaker 3: said I wasn't thinking that either one of them.
- 32:07Speaker 4: Would probably make the playoffs.
- 32:09Speaker 3: And I thought both coaches were were really in a bond.
- 32:19Speaker 4: Now you know, I'm think.
- 32:21Speaker 6: Well, one of them is particularly in a bond.
- 32:24Speaker 4: I think, I think.
- 32:25Speaker 3: I think Neil Brown, I think is definitely absolutely has
- 32:29Speaker 3: some issues at this point. And I think, I think,
- 32:35Speaker 3: I know where you get rid, I know where you're
- 32:37Speaker 3: trying to go before you get there. I want to like,
- 32:41Speaker 3: you know, I feel like, you know, what we do
- 32:47Speaker 3: is fans, Okay, I think what we do as fans,
- 32:50Speaker 3: we get the we we start the ball rolling with,
- 32:54Speaker 3: oh we don't like the coach no more, we need
- 32:56Speaker 3: to get a new coach.
- 32:57Speaker 4: Blah blah, blah blah.
- 32:59Speaker 3: And I think when you look at Marshall specifically, and
- 33:03Speaker 3: again I was on that wagon, Okay, I was on
- 33:05Speaker 3: that wagon like, ooh, I don't know if he's going
- 33:07Speaker 3: to be able to make it.
- 33:08Speaker 4: You know where he you know. But but now they're
- 33:11Speaker 4: in a bowl right lead the conference.
- 33:15Speaker 6: I think the east of it. Yes, yes, so.
- 33:19Speaker 4: Whatever that looked like early, right, it's not that name.
- 33:23Speaker 7: He's righted the ship, so to speak. I mean, yes,
- 33:26Speaker 7: he had that total meltdown against Georgia. Southern that they're
- 33:29Speaker 7: still they're still paying for that a bit a bit,
- 33:33Speaker 7: but they are going.
- 33:35Speaker 3: I think when the yes, and I think when the
- 33:37Speaker 3: fans get excited when they get that information, do do
- 33:42Speaker 3: you let's say, you were yelling no, we don't want huff,
- 33:45Speaker 3: we don't we want to get him out? Can you
- 33:47Speaker 3: honestly now say, Okay, maybe I was a little too
- 33:51Speaker 3: early in judging him.
- 33:53Speaker 4: Are you are you willing to do that?
- 33:55Speaker 2: Is?
- 33:56Speaker 4: Is the average fan really willing to do that?
- 33:58Speaker 3: Or do they just like, oh, grosh our team is
- 34:01Speaker 3: really good and just and leave it there.
- 34:05Speaker 7: Yeah, you know, that's a that's a really good point
- 34:08Speaker 7: because I think it depends on the type of fan
- 34:11Speaker 7: you're talking about. And we talked a lot about toxic
- 34:15Speaker 7: environments as far as football in the state of West
- 34:17Speaker 7: Virginia from Little League on up, and I think sometimes
- 34:22Speaker 7: in West Virginia we just get this negative mindset and
- 34:27Speaker 7: I think, you know, at the beginning of the season,
- 34:28Speaker 7: it doesn't help whenever you know the preseason rankings, I
- 34:31Speaker 7: think they were picked to finish like fifth in the conference.
- 34:34Speaker 6: Well, right out of the gate, you're like, oh, we're
- 34:36Speaker 6: gonna be bad this year.
- 34:37Speaker 7: We're gonna be bad, you know, and so you've already
- 34:40Speaker 7: got that in you're in the back of your mind.
- 34:41Speaker 7: And then you know you lose a game, well you
- 34:44Speaker 7: have to go travel to Ohio State, and of course
- 34:47Speaker 7: that wasn't a pretty picture.
- 34:48Speaker 6: They lose their Virginia Tech.
- 34:51Speaker 3: We should be which should be sensible for some fan
- 34:54Speaker 3: to to do that, right.
- 34:56Speaker 7: It should be, it should be, But you're still in
- 34:58Speaker 7: that mind, especially when you come out of the gate.
- 35:00Speaker 7: You win your first game and then you lose too
- 35:02Speaker 7: in a row, one to Virginia Tech, one to Ohio State,
- 35:05Speaker 7: which you know you're one and two. You've already got
- 35:07Speaker 7: that information in your head that we're not going to
- 35:09Speaker 7: finish grade in the in our conference play right, yep.
- 35:13Speaker 7: And and then you win a few they weren't pretty games,
- 35:15Speaker 7: but you're winning, and then you then you have that
- 35:18Speaker 7: debacle at Georgia Southern. That was the one that really
- 35:22Speaker 7: put the fans over the edge. I think I think
- 35:24Speaker 7: they could have handled the losses with the Hokies and
- 35:28Speaker 7: the buck Eyes because those are expected losses. But when
- 35:31Speaker 7: you lose a game in the last few minutes in
- 35:34Speaker 7: the manner that the Herd lost that game and it
- 35:37Speaker 7: was about they questioned coaching right and rightly so and so.
- 35:42Speaker 7: But now you know, Huff's found a way to turn
- 35:46Speaker 7: the like I said, to right the ship, and they're winning.
- 35:50Speaker 7: They're atop their division. Now they may need some help.
- 35:52Speaker 7: They need some help, They need some losses. I think
- 35:54Speaker 7: from like James Madison and Georgia Southern coming back to
- 35:58Speaker 7: haunt them. They could possibly play for the conference title,
- 36:02Speaker 7: which is pretty amazing considering where we were at the
- 36:05Speaker 7: beginning of the year.
- 36:06Speaker 6: But what you're saying is, I don't know.
- 36:10Speaker 7: Fans have like we've said this before, fans have short memories,
- 36:14Speaker 7: right right, So I think if they can get to
- 36:15Speaker 7: that point where they win the division and then they're
- 36:18Speaker 7: in the conference game, you know, to win the conference,
- 36:23Speaker 7: you know, I think I think people will change their
- 36:26Speaker 7: opinion on Huff, But as soon as he loses the game,
- 36:28Speaker 7: I think they're going to go back to that square
- 36:30Speaker 7: one as, oh, he's not good. We need we need
- 36:32Speaker 7: some different, you know, blood down here.
- 36:34Speaker 6: Well and winning a it's about winning against yes.
- 36:39Speaker 3: And and and and winning like a playoff game or
- 36:42Speaker 3: bowl game.
- 36:44Speaker 4: That's not easy.
- 36:46Speaker 3: I mean, because whoever is in a bowl that you're
- 36:49Speaker 3: playing they're going to be good.
- 36:53Speaker 4: It's not. It's not like just anybody to play a
- 36:56Speaker 4: bowl game.
- 36:57Speaker 7: So yeah, it's not quite a football. You have to
- 37:00Speaker 7: a winning, winning record, I believe absolutely, Yeah.
- 37:03Speaker 4: At least at least that, you know. And to me,
- 37:07Speaker 4: I'm going to go back to.
- 37:10Speaker 3: Listening to him talk about what he was going to
- 37:14Speaker 3: do and how he was going to sitting on the
- 37:17Speaker 3: committee of picking the head coach.
- 37:20Speaker 4: And I've said this a billion times.
- 37:23Speaker 3: I've been in football my entire life, and talk about
- 37:28Speaker 3: football was the most amazing conversation that I had heard
- 37:34Speaker 3: in my life about football.
- 37:36Speaker 4: He's charismatic, yes, And so I fell in love with
- 37:39Speaker 4: him right then.
- 37:40Speaker 3: Okay, so I was like, there is nobody else in
- 37:42Speaker 3: this room. Everybody had something to how they were going
- 37:47Speaker 3: to do it. But what that man was talking about
- 37:49Speaker 3: is stuff like I can't even I can't tell you
- 37:53Speaker 3: what that'll do to a player, right, because like he
- 37:56Speaker 3: shook me up. I was like, oh, man, can I play?
- 37:58Speaker 5: You know?
- 37:59Speaker 6: And you could just imagine his conversation.
- 38:01Speaker 3: Absolutely absolutely, and and I think he is that guy.
- 38:06Speaker 4: And and and though I feel like.
- 38:12Speaker 3: For him at this point where he was where the
- 38:16Speaker 3: fan base had him and where he is now, if
- 38:21Speaker 3: I'm the fan that was on the on the negative
- 38:23Speaker 3: side and thinks he needs to go, I need to
- 38:26Speaker 3: be like, Okay, really, am I really truly a Marshall fan?
- 38:29Speaker 4: Right?
- 38:30Speaker 3: Am I really really? Because and you say, well, yeah,
- 38:32Speaker 3: but that's I'm a Marshall fan. But that's the coach now,
- 38:36Speaker 3: he's the coach who's leading the team.
- 38:40Speaker 4: So he is Marshall. He is the we are, right okay,
- 38:44Speaker 4: you know, and I think I think.
- 38:47Speaker 3: The fans starts screaming what they want to have happened
- 38:52Speaker 3: to satisfy them, Okay, And that's not fair because when
- 38:58Speaker 3: you watch those players a week ago and they won
- 39:03Speaker 3: the game, and you watch those players jump at him
- 39:06Speaker 3: and high five him, that's not That's a whole different
- 39:11Speaker 3: coach player relationship, right.
- 39:13Speaker 4: I'm not running up the Bud Graham high five.
- 39:15Speaker 6: In him exactly, you know, the whole.
- 39:19Speaker 5: That's the whole.
- 39:19Speaker 4: It's a whole thing, you know.
- 39:21Speaker 3: And and to have that coach that you can feel
- 39:24Speaker 3: that kind of bond with, right, that's an amazing thing
- 39:29Speaker 3: for every single player who can appreciate.
- 39:33Speaker 6: I agree with all that you said.
- 39:35Speaker 7: And that's that's one aspect of being a head coach
- 39:37Speaker 7: at a college. But we all have to remember, we
- 39:39Speaker 7: all have to go back and remember Doc Holliday. Doc
- 39:42Speaker 7: Holliday won Coach of the Year in Conference USA, and
- 39:47Speaker 7: weeks later they let him go. And so we're not
- 39:51Speaker 7: just looking at interaction between the players and the fans
- 39:56Speaker 7: and winning. We're looking at I guess in the world
- 39:59Speaker 7: of NI and the world of media, they want to
- 40:04Speaker 7: coach that's going to and Huff's given them this. I
- 40:08Speaker 7: will I will say this. Huff has given them that
- 40:11Speaker 7: face of Marshall. What is the personality, Yes, and going
- 40:15Speaker 7: to you know, hometown functions, being a part of the community,
- 40:19Speaker 7: which was part of what Marshall wanted and part of
- 40:21Speaker 7: the reason I believe Dark Holliday was let go. So
- 40:25Speaker 7: but now I think it bounces back and forth between
- 40:30Speaker 7: fans wanting to win. I mean, I just think fans
- 40:32Speaker 7: sometimes are just so out of touch with reality. They
- 40:36Speaker 7: just want something out of a head coach that they
- 40:40Speaker 7: want it all and and that's a great concept and
- 40:43Speaker 7: a great thing to strive for, but sometimes you just
- 40:46Speaker 7: got to pick. Okay, you know which part of this
- 40:50Speaker 7: are we going to go with? Is it the winning aspect?
- 40:53Speaker 7: Of it or is it being part of the community.
- 40:56Speaker 3: And be fair and say to yourself, where did I
- 41:00Speaker 3: I think Marshall was going to be when.
- 41:02Speaker 4: The season started, exactly, you know.
- 41:05Speaker 3: And and even if you said, well, I just don't
- 41:07Speaker 3: think Huff can Huff can do this. So I don't
- 41:09Speaker 3: see Marshall. They might win five games, they might win
- 41:12Speaker 3: four games.
- 41:13Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 41:13Speaker 3: I just don't think that they're going to be anything.
- 41:16Speaker 3: Okay now where we are now okay.
- 41:21Speaker 6: Could change quickly though, it could change.
- 41:23Speaker 7: But what he loses all three of the the last
- 41:26Speaker 7: games of the season, it's a whole different story in Huntington.
- 41:30Speaker 4: Yes, and and and and now we're optimistic.
- 41:33Speaker 3: See to me, I'm thinking that you're either to me,
- 41:35Speaker 3: you either you're in or you're out right like I've
- 41:42Speaker 3: been out, you know. And and I was out not
- 41:46Speaker 3: because I wanted to see him go, because I because I,
- 41:49Speaker 3: like I said, he's got me right.
- 41:52Speaker 4: I could play for him any day, regardless of the record.
- 41:55Speaker 3: Yeah, But for I felt like for the for the
- 41:58Speaker 3: fan base, they just weren't they weren't willing. We've got spoiled,
- 42:04Speaker 3: you know, with championships and and and Bobby Prue you know,
- 42:07Speaker 3: we just got spoiled there. And now everybody, every coach
- 42:11Speaker 3: that comes has to be that has to has to
- 42:15Speaker 3: get us to that space. Well that that that's not
- 42:18Speaker 3: an easy task. You also have to build a team
- 42:22Speaker 3: and keep players. And now with the nil situation, how
- 42:27Speaker 3: do you do that?
- 42:28Speaker 6: Right, that's the bottom line.
- 42:31Speaker 4: I think that's I think that is the key.
- 42:33Speaker 7: The whole dynamics of college football are completely different than
- 42:36Speaker 7: they were back in the nineties when PREU was winning championships.
- 42:39Speaker 3: I'm sorry, and and you talked about it, yes, and
- 42:42Speaker 3: and the fans don't change.
- 42:44Speaker 6: The fans.
- 42:45Speaker 7: Fans still expect the traditions that they had back in
- 42:49Speaker 7: the nineties when it's not the same landscape.
- 42:52Speaker 3: And again, nobody, nobody has ever had, nobody in Marshall's
- 42:59Speaker 3: hit history has ever had a player like a Randy Moss.
- 43:05Speaker 5: No.
- 43:06Speaker 4: I mean, let's let's just be honest.
- 43:09Speaker 3: Randy Moss in I could coach Randy Moss and and
- 43:13Speaker 3: and and and potentially have a chance at a super Bowl,
- 43:16Speaker 3: right exactly, you know, I mean, I skip all my
- 43:19Speaker 3: college just go to the league.
- 43:21Speaker 6: Make any quarterback look good. Absolutely, I mean, so you.
- 43:24Speaker 3: You you you can't just ignore that piece of it,
- 43:30Speaker 3: and and and and be just realistic. And in the
- 43:33Speaker 3: challenges that Huff has, he does have n IO issues.
- 43:38Speaker 4: You know, he's got to compete with that now.
- 43:41Speaker 3: And if I don't like him, and if I don't
- 43:43Speaker 3: think I think he's the.
- 43:45Speaker 4: Right guy, well I'm not gonna. I'm not gonna.
- 43:47Speaker 3: I'm not gonna put no money up for that, right,
- 43:48Speaker 3: I mean, so you so you have the problem. So
- 43:52Speaker 3: there's that problem as well.
- 43:54Speaker 7: And you know, I don't want to say this in
- 43:58Speaker 7: a negative way. I don't know how else to say it.
- 44:00Speaker 6: Though. People's memories they're so short.
- 44:04Speaker 7: Yeah, they forget us going out to South Bend, you know,
- 44:07Speaker 7: just a few years ago and pulling off one of
- 44:08Speaker 7: the biggest upsets in college football history. Really it was,
- 44:13Speaker 7: and Marshall is known for that. We sneak up on people,
- 44:16Speaker 7: we can somehow find a way sometimes to win. But
- 44:19Speaker 7: when we don't do it, boy, they're just they're so
- 44:22Speaker 7: quick to throw stones.
- 44:23Speaker 3: I mean, if you if you go back to your point,
- 44:26Speaker 3: if you go back and you look at at great wins.
- 44:31Speaker 4: Great wins, great win Marshall's.
- 44:33Speaker 3: Great wins, and you put the coaches connected to that
- 44:37Speaker 3: hump send that ballpark.
- 44:39Speaker 7: Sure you have, he earned it, you know what, In fact,
- 44:45Speaker 7: he probably earned it more than the others because he's
- 44:48Speaker 7: dealing in a.
- 44:48Speaker 6: Whole different era valid point of keeping.
- 44:51Speaker 7: Players and trying to you know, keep a team that
- 44:55Speaker 7: has a winning record together.
- 44:57Speaker 3: There's no way Marshall keeps Randy in in the n
- 45:00Speaker 3: I L Chad Pennington.
- 45:02Speaker 6: He's not, he's not staying that team would never it
- 45:04Speaker 6: would not have it.
- 45:06Speaker 3: No, No, they'd have been gone all over the place.
- 45:10Speaker 4: And that's it.
- 45:10Speaker 3: And and let and again people forget, it's easy to forget.
- 45:16Speaker 4: But our roll for my role, our role for.
- 45:20Speaker 3: Marshall, the support that Marshall is is like, I'm telling
- 45:24Speaker 3: you that.
- 45:27Speaker 4: Coach Huff talked about football.
- 45:32Speaker 3: In a manner that literally froze me and and made
- 45:36Speaker 3: me like, oh, I just I just want to sit
- 45:39Speaker 3: in the room and listen to this guy talk.
- 45:43Speaker 4: So I give him that for sure.
- 45:45Speaker 3: So and so I'm trying to tell you this is
- 45:48Speaker 3: not just your average Joe blow coach.
- 45:51Speaker 5: You know.
- 45:52Speaker 6: And again, we're lucky to have him.
- 45:55Speaker 4: You got to be lucky to have him.
- 45:57Speaker 7: But we also know how fickle fans are, and how
- 46:01Speaker 7: fickle really the administration at Marshall can be because we know,
- 46:05Speaker 7: look what happened to Doc. They have their minds made
- 46:07Speaker 7: up and it didn't matter how that season ended.
- 46:11Speaker 6: So it's gone.
- 46:11Speaker 3: So so so if we if we if we jump
- 46:16Speaker 3: forward and say.
- 46:20Speaker 4: They go bowling, they lose the bowl game.
- 46:25Speaker 7: Now it depends on how the season ends. Don't you
- 46:29Speaker 7: think I guess, Okay, they're going bowling. Yes, that that's
- 46:33Speaker 7: that's established. But they still have what two games left?
- 46:37Speaker 7: Three games even no two games? I think what if
- 46:40Speaker 7: they lose both of those games and in a in
- 46:43Speaker 7: a fashion that's not close at all, like a meltdown
- 46:46Speaker 7: at Georgia Southern, that that type of scenario, then what
- 46:49Speaker 7: then what's the fan base going to?
- 46:51Speaker 5: How?
- 46:52Speaker 4: How will they work?
- 46:53Speaker 3: My question, my question before I can answer that is
- 46:58Speaker 3: how important is it?
- 47:00Speaker 7: So?
- 47:00Speaker 4: What's the What was the goal going into the season?
- 47:04Speaker 5: To me?
- 47:05Speaker 4: Everybody wants the Bowl? Right, right?
- 47:07Speaker 3: So we we accomplished that regardless of what's happening.
- 47:12Speaker 4: We got a bowl. We got a shot at a bowl, right.
- 47:16Speaker 3: So if you're going bowling, I'm not saying I want
- 47:20Speaker 3: them to lose, but you can't now switch and say, well, yeah,
- 47:23Speaker 3: but we lost three games, and now we're going bowling.
- 47:26Speaker 3: I don't you know that that don't matter to me.
- 47:29Speaker 3: Oh what mattered to me was those last three games. No,
- 47:31Speaker 3: you what was it? What's the goal in the beginning
- 47:33Speaker 3: of the season. Let's go bowling, right, we're going bowling.
- 47:37Speaker 7: Maybe or maybe maybe maybe they aspirations were to win
- 47:41Speaker 7: a conference title.
- 47:43Speaker 4: That may be for the team.
- 47:45Speaker 6: But you don't think the average fan, No.
- 47:47Speaker 4: I don't think.
- 47:47Speaker 5: No.
- 47:48Speaker 3: I think I think today today's fan wants go They
- 47:51Speaker 3: want to go bowl. They want to they want to
- 47:54Speaker 3: play in the Bowl game because it just sounds big.
- 47:57Speaker 6: Well it does.
- 47:57Speaker 7: And now that we've got the college championship playoffs the
- 48:02Speaker 7: way that they're true, it's kind of taken lackluster, you know,
- 48:05Speaker 7: it's kind of made the Bowl scene not as quite
- 48:08Speaker 7: as exciting.
- 48:09Speaker 6: But we've got to face reality.
- 48:11Speaker 7: I mean, it's gonna be really really let's just even
- 48:14Speaker 7: call it what It is impossible for Marshall to get
- 48:17Speaker 7: into that playoff.
- 48:18Speaker 4: Well, yes, yes, I will give you that.
- 48:21Speaker 6: I mean, it is what it is.
- 48:23Speaker 4: But again, I'm going to go back and again.
- 48:26Speaker 3: The video of him on Facebook and with his players
- 48:30Speaker 3: in the locker room and him yelling and screaming and
- 48:33Speaker 3: all that.
- 48:34Speaker 4: I'm telling you to.
- 48:37Speaker 3: Find that coach right, To find that coach and those
- 48:42Speaker 3: players to have that kind of bond is amazing to me.
- 48:49Speaker 6: He can connect to the young kids and that matters.
- 48:52Speaker 6: That matters.
- 48:53Speaker 3: The funniest and cheerful kind of coach that I that
- 49:00Speaker 3: I can remember, Pete Carroll was that fun loving kind
- 49:03Speaker 3: of guy. But he was that was him in the
- 49:05Speaker 3: beginning of his career when when he coached me in Minnesota,
- 49:09Speaker 3: and he would want to shoot horse and you know,
- 49:12Speaker 3: we had a basketball rim in the in the in
- 49:13Speaker 3: the in the facility and he wanted to play horse
- 49:16Speaker 3: against everybody and laughing and having fun. And he was
- 49:21Speaker 3: like one of the guys, right, you know, but you
- 49:23Speaker 3: respected him as the coach, but he was one of
- 49:25Speaker 3: those kind of guys. And then to watch him go
- 49:29Speaker 3: through the system and and and his connection with players
- 49:33Speaker 3: was amazing. And I'm and and and Huff to me
- 49:39Speaker 3: has that type of personality and players love that.
- 49:46Speaker 7: And that is so crucial and critical, especially now that
- 49:49Speaker 7: we're talking about the NIL on the transfer portal. If
- 49:52Speaker 7: a kid feels connected, he may yes, they may they.
- 49:56Speaker 6: May say, oh, you know, what you know, Marshall. I
- 49:59Speaker 6: love this guy.
- 50:00Speaker 7: This guy's you know, he's he's like a father figure
- 50:02Speaker 7: to me. He's teaching me, you know, lots of different
- 50:06Speaker 7: life lessons. I'm winning here, I'm winning, ye playing playing,
- 50:10Speaker 7: I'm playing. So if you can't have you know, the
- 50:13Speaker 7: ni O money and the transfer portal advantages, then you
- 50:19Speaker 7: really do need that guy. You need that guy in
- 50:21Speaker 7: the locker room to keep the players.
- 50:24Speaker 4: Part of that.
- 50:24Speaker 3: And and two and and and I love that too
- 50:27Speaker 3: because but I hate to put the butt in there.
- 50:31Speaker 3: I'm not sometimes I'm not sure of what a player's
- 50:35Speaker 3: really looking for in a coach. And then the critical
- 50:38Speaker 3: piece to that is you should be looking for it.
- 50:41Speaker 3: You should be looking for something from your coach. What
- 50:45Speaker 3: whatever that what whatever it.
- 50:47Speaker 4: Is that you need.
- 50:48Speaker 3: Now I'm not saying that the coach can match everybody
- 50:51Speaker 3: on that team, right, but you need to be looking
- 50:55Speaker 3: for something out of that coach, whether it's what he knows,
- 50:59Speaker 3: how he pushes you, which which is a confusing kind
- 51:04Speaker 3: of piece, the pushing piece of it, when I push you,
- 51:08Speaker 3: you could you could take that personally.
- 51:11Speaker 6: I think it depends on the player.
- 51:12Speaker 3: I think I think it depends on the player and
- 51:15Speaker 3: the players to me his goal coaches who yelled at
- 51:19Speaker 3: me and custed at me and pushed me to do harder.
- 51:23Speaker 4: I'm okay. I was okay with that.
- 51:25Speaker 3: Whether I liked it or not, I'm okay with that
- 51:28Speaker 3: because all that's gonna do is that's gonna make me better.
- 51:31Speaker 4: You know, Sonny Randall.
- 51:32Speaker 3: Was unbelievably hard and made your run forever. But it
- 51:39Speaker 3: did not bother me because I knew what I was
- 51:41Speaker 3: trying to get to and this dude played in the league,
- 51:44Speaker 3: and I'm thinking to myself, like, well, he knows, he
- 51:48Speaker 3: knows what.
- 51:48Speaker 4: It takes, and we don't.
- 51:51Speaker 3: Sometimes I think what we don't look at that coach's
- 51:55Speaker 3: ability to help me get to where I want to get.
- 51:59Speaker 3: What we do is we like, why why we got
- 52:03Speaker 3: to do all this?
- 52:04Speaker 4: Right? Right? Don't you think he knows?
- 52:07Speaker 7: And don't you think too that now that we've got
- 52:10Speaker 7: the system has changed at the high school level and
- 52:12Speaker 7: they're able like if they don't like the way a
- 52:14Speaker 7: coach is treating them, they'll all just go here, you know.
- 52:17Speaker 7: So we've got that mindset already in place, and then
- 52:21Speaker 7: they get to the collegiate level and that mindset follows them,
- 52:24Speaker 7: so they're like, well, you know, I'm not going to
- 52:25Speaker 7: put up with this. I can go over here, and
- 52:27Speaker 7: this coach just promised me this and this, and I
- 52:30Speaker 7: don't have to listen to what you know I'm hearing
- 52:32Speaker 7: here this abuse.
- 52:34Speaker 4: I'll make this case that.
- 52:38Speaker 3: Most high school athletes who don't like their coach.
- 52:43Speaker 4: Because he's too hard, he yells, he.
- 52:46Speaker 3: Screams, he does all this kind of stuff, likely or
- 52:50Speaker 3: not going to play college football.
- 52:52Speaker 7: Right.
- 52:53Speaker 3: Oh, I agree, because if you think that you don't
- 52:57Speaker 3: get to go home and tell mom and dad that
- 53:00Speaker 3: that coach got on me, you don't get to do that.
- 53:04Speaker 3: You can do it, but trust me, you're going to
- 53:06Speaker 3: be writing a check for the next school that you
- 53:08Speaker 3: go to. Yes, because you're not. You're not gonna happen.
- 53:11Speaker 3: That's not happening here. And I think I think we
- 53:15Speaker 3: just don't we we just don't realize that. And I
- 53:17Speaker 3: think part of our issues is we're not teaching when
- 53:23Speaker 3: I we're not putting a foundation that is going to
- 53:25Speaker 3: be strong enough to play college ball.
- 53:28Speaker 6: That's exactly what Hollis said, right, Yes, that was his point.
- 53:30Speaker 4: Yes, And I think we have talented kids.
- 53:35Speaker 3: I think, but we spoil them and and we make
- 53:38Speaker 3: them think that they're special, and the moment they walk
- 53:41Speaker 3: and again I was. I was a victim of thinking
- 53:43Speaker 3: I was special too. I get a I get a
- 53:46Speaker 3: scholarship at Marshall, and I'm the last dude to show
- 53:49Speaker 3: up at the first day of practice or the first
- 53:52Speaker 3: day the first meeting.
- 53:54Speaker 4: I'm I'm home washing my car. I'm washing my car.
- 53:58Speaker 3: I'm washing my car, and I'm thinking like, okay, I'm
- 54:01Speaker 3: gonna pull up like I'm like I'm a big will.
- 54:03Speaker 6: Oh yeah, never again, never again again.
- 54:08Speaker 4: It took it took me one time to learn that lesson. No,
- 54:11Speaker 4: you you're not special.
- 54:13Speaker 3: You are part of something, and I'm gonna make sure
- 54:15Speaker 3: you understand the part of this that you'll never separate
- 54:19Speaker 3: yourself from that. I never had that situation, never thought
- 54:23Speaker 3: that way ever again in my life. Right and because
- 54:26Speaker 3: I could see it, I understood it like I knew
- 54:29Speaker 3: I had messed up when I was walking in because
- 54:32Speaker 3: I had high school coaches that all eyes on me.
- 54:36Speaker 3: And it wasn't like I didn't go I didn't get
- 54:38Speaker 3: that my entire time. I don't know why. I don't
- 54:42Speaker 3: know why I thought I was going to be so
- 54:44Speaker 3: special that I could be late, you know.
- 54:48Speaker 7: But they taught you what but but here's the here's
- 54:50Speaker 7: the part that's important.
- 54:51Speaker 6: They taught you that lesson early on.
- 54:54Speaker 4: Yes, quickly I knew it. But for whatever reason I
- 54:57Speaker 4: took it. I felt like I was special, you.
- 54:59Speaker 7: Know, because and maybe in high school you got a
- 55:01Speaker 7: little more leeway.
- 55:03Speaker 4: No, not really, no, not at all, not at all.
- 55:06Speaker 3: Right, So actually I think again, I think it went
- 55:10Speaker 3: to my head, like you know, now, again, Marshall wasn't great,
- 55:13Speaker 3: but but I got a scholarship to play football, and
- 55:17Speaker 3: so and I was.
- 55:19Speaker 4: I was supposedly the.
- 55:20Speaker 6: First you were young.
- 55:21Speaker 4: I was young.
- 55:22Speaker 3: I was the first recruit. So I'm thinking, Okay, they'll wait.
- 55:26Speaker 6: I'd have loved to be a file on the wall
- 55:30Speaker 6: that go down.
- 55:30Speaker 3: They'll wait for the wait for the needing, that wait
- 55:32Speaker 3: for me to get there. I'm just And and it
- 55:35Speaker 3: was horrible, like I mean, it was. I paid for
- 55:38Speaker 3: that and it and it never again would that ever happened?
- 55:44Speaker 7: Good and that and and and that's that's part of
- 55:47Speaker 7: what's missing right now.
- 55:48Speaker 3: I think absolutely and and and we gotta go. But
- 55:51Speaker 3: I want to I want to say this, Lisa, and
- 55:54Speaker 3: and and here and kind of get your feedback on this.
- 55:58Speaker 4: I believe that most kids today.
- 56:04Speaker 3: Do not have the ultimate respect for the coach and
- 56:10Speaker 3: what he says, because you hear them mumbling different stuff,
- 56:15Speaker 3: coach says something, and then you say something. Coach says something,
- 56:17Speaker 3: and you say something that was never something that could
- 56:21Speaker 3: happen back in the day. And I think that if
- 56:25Speaker 3: I don't think there's a way to go back, but
- 56:27Speaker 3: I think parents need to teach that that coach is
- 56:33Speaker 3: the ultimate decision making process for your future success in
- 56:39Speaker 3: a sport.
- 56:40Speaker 6: And I agree with you.
- 56:42Speaker 7: I do think it starts at home with the family,
- 56:44Speaker 7: you know, the family aspect of it. But we also
- 56:47Speaker 7: have to do something about this. And you can't see
- 56:50Speaker 7: me on the radio, guys that I'm holding my phone.
- 56:52Speaker 7: You know, it's all the other factors that are in
- 56:56Speaker 7: their ear, so to speak.
- 56:58Speaker 6: Social media, you know, TV, just so many things.
- 57:04Speaker 7: That there there's so many influences now that we didn't
- 57:07Speaker 7: even didn't e didn't even imagine, right, right, you know,
- 57:10Speaker 7: it was basically our community and our family and now
- 57:12Speaker 7: that these poor kids they've got so many things in
- 57:14Speaker 7: their head.
- 57:15Speaker 6: It's great and.
- 57:15Speaker 4: That's a challenge. That's a challenge. Challenge.
- 57:17Speaker 3: All right, Well, I want to make sure we think.
