- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to The Right Time, a Wave original.
- 0:09Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:12Speaker 1: get your podcasts. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:16Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:18Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:21Speaker 1: a hater. As I think you can see, we out
- 0:23Speaker 1: here playing a road game this week. This is our
- 0:26Speaker 1: first actual Right Time road game, but we're playing it.
- 0:29Speaker 1: It's all good. I'm in this hotel, right? trying to
- 0:35Speaker 1: get ready for this show. And again, the NFL be
- 0:38Speaker 1: stepping on this dope, right? And since they stepping on
- 0:41Speaker 1: the dope, the dope don't hit like it used to.
- 0:43Speaker 1: All I'm saying is once you got bye weeks and
- 0:46Speaker 1: you got London games and you got Thursday games and
- 0:49Speaker 1: you got this Monday night doubleheader that I swear nobody
- 0:52Speaker 1: asked for, you know what I'm saying? Like sometimes we'd
- 0:55Speaker 1: be looking at slate like, I don't really know exactly
- 0:59Speaker 1: how we're going to make this work, right? But we're
- 1:00Speaker 1: going to do that because we love you, okay? So, what,
- 1:03Speaker 1: the Jaguars got their asses kicked first thing in the morning?
- 1:06Speaker 1: They got tally-hoed to fuck up out of London? I
- 1:08Speaker 1: don't even know if it was in London. I just
- 1:11Speaker 1: know if they wasn't in London, they might be in
- 1:12Speaker 1: there right now. By the way, they got their asses kicked,
- 1:14Speaker 1: but I guess London like they are the home. By
- 1:16Speaker 1: the way, Ryan, is there any two homes that could
- 1:18Speaker 1: be more divergent than London and Jacksonville? Can you think
- 1:21Speaker 1: of any two places that have less in common?
- 1:24Speaker 2: It depends on the part of London. That's the interesting thing.
- 1:26Speaker 2: You know, like the Alabama or England meme? Like, you know,
- 1:30Speaker 2: some parts of England are Jacksonville. That's, you know, we
- 1:33Speaker 2: have a lot more in common that way.
- 1:35Speaker 1: But I would love to send somebody from London to Jacksonville.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Just tell them they're going to Florida because they think
- 1:41Speaker 1: it's like Miami Vites.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Miami Vice or Disney World, which Jacksonville is neither.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:47Speaker 1: And I know this because I used to think this.
- 1:48Speaker 1: And everybody who's not from Florida has thought this at
- 1:51Speaker 1: one point in time. And then you wind up going
- 1:53Speaker 1: to some Florida that is not Orlando and that is
- 1:56Speaker 1: not Miami. And you realize I'm in Georgia.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Correct. You're in very South Georgia.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Yes, Georgia. Brian, let me tell you, you crossed that
- 2:06Speaker 1: line from South Georgia to North Florida, or as my
- 2:09Speaker 1: brother says, South Georgia to North Florida. What's the difference?
- 2:12Speaker 1: Great question. I do not have an answer for it.
- 2:15Speaker 1: You could cross that line, and if you don't see it,
- 2:16Speaker 1: you won't know until you see an El Cheapo gas,
- 2:19Speaker 1: and that lets you know that you have made it
- 2:20Speaker 1: to Florida. That El Cheapo, be there. Shout out to you. Actually,
- 2:27Speaker 1: I don't know who exactly I should send a shout
- 2:29Speaker 1: out to. I don't know if the shout out goes
- 2:31Speaker 1: to the Denver Broncos or if the shout out goes
- 2:34Speaker 1: to the New York Giants. But together, you guys strong-armed
- 2:38Speaker 1: your way onto the top of this program with... An
- 2:44Speaker 1: inexplicable fourth quarter, right? So I was in here. I
- 2:48Speaker 1: was watching the Cowboys and the Commandos play. And I'm
- 2:52Speaker 1: texting with Ryan about how it's actually kind of surprising
- 2:55Speaker 1: how little we've talked about the Cowboys this year, right?
- 2:58Speaker 1: Like they traded Micah Parsons and then CeeDee Lamb got hurt.
- 3:01Speaker 1: And the Cowboys felt like they had become irrelevant in
- 3:04Speaker 1: a way that seems impossible for being the Cowboys. And
- 3:07Speaker 1: the one game that we really paid attention to them playing,
- 3:10Speaker 1: it was a tie. Now, of course, you know, the
- 3:13Speaker 1: Make-A-Wish Foundation, that's how they was getting into it, but they... Hey, man.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Don't tell nobody, but I might be falling for what
- 3:23Speaker 1: they got going. You know what I'm saying? Like, they was...
- 3:27Speaker 1: Jack Prescott... Looking good. But anyway, I'm watching that game.
- 3:30Speaker 1: I'm like, cool, I'm going to figure out how it is.
- 3:33Speaker 1: I'm going to turn that into the show, right? Like,
- 3:35Speaker 1: it's kind of like, I don't know what trick your
- 3:37Speaker 1: mama uses to, like, when the Kool-Aid ain't got enough
- 3:40Speaker 1: oomph to, like, bring it a little bit farther, put
- 3:42Speaker 1: a little orange juice in it or whatever. But, you know,
- 3:43Speaker 1: you got to prop that dope up a little bit, right? Okay, cool.
- 3:47Speaker 1: So I had checked the score on the Giants and
- 3:52Speaker 1: the Broncos, and the Giants was tapping that ass. And
- 3:55Speaker 1: I turned it on on the computer. And I see it.
- 3:58Speaker 1: And the Giants are doing that. And I'm going to
- 4:00Speaker 1: be honest with you. The Giants achieving success under the
- 4:07Speaker 1: current set of conditions has the potential to be very, very,
- 4:14Speaker 1: very annoying. And you know why it has potential to
- 4:20Speaker 1: get very, very, very annoying. Because out of nowhere... They
- 4:27Speaker 1: went from having a black quarterback and Scatterboy started all year,
- 4:32Speaker 1: has he? Because I feel like he just became the
- 4:33Speaker 1: starter later. But anyway, I can't explain to you. And honestly,
- 4:37Speaker 1: I can't explain it to you because I was going
- 4:39Speaker 1: to say I can't explain to you how excited white
- 4:40Speaker 1: people in New York are about having Joe Theismann and
- 4:44Speaker 1: John Riggins, right? Having themselves a little dynamic duo, you
- 4:48Speaker 1: know what I'm saying? A little third base situation, right?
- 4:51Speaker 1: Two BC boys. They're going to fuck around and get
- 4:53Speaker 1: one of them McConkie or the McCaffreys. That's the one
- 4:57Speaker 1: I'm thinking about. They're going to get one of those
- 4:59Speaker 1: and they're going to be like, boom, you know. I
- 5:03Speaker 1: suddenly forgot the words to Paul Revere. Anyway, it's getting
- 5:06Speaker 1: tough to deal with. I got to be honest with you.
- 5:09Speaker 1: It's getting a little bit over the top. And they
- 5:12Speaker 1: was beating the Broncos, right? And I was like, oh, wow,
- 5:15Speaker 1: I guess this game's over. And I was texting Shannon
- 5:18Speaker 1: about it. I was like, damn, you know, Shannon's a
- 5:19Speaker 1: Giants fan. He's been long-suffering by as long as I've
- 5:21Speaker 1: known him. And I was like, damn, dawg, you got
- 5:23Speaker 1: you a white buddy cop movie over there. He sent
- 5:25Speaker 1: me a funny gif with Jonah Hill in it. You know,
- 5:28Speaker 1: like we was just making jokes. Then I looked up.
- 5:32Speaker 1: And it was like a one score game. And I
- 5:35Speaker 1: sent Shannon a text that said, wait, this game is close.
- 5:39Speaker 1: And if he ever replies to that text, I will
- 5:41Speaker 1: let you know. Because as of right now, it hasn't happened.
- 5:46Speaker 1: I then, I'm just totally lost by all of this.
- 5:49Speaker 1: I haven't been paying like close attention to everything. So
- 5:51Speaker 1: I mess around and I go look in the box score.
- 5:53Speaker 1: And when I look at the box score, this is
- 5:55Speaker 1: after the Broncos have taken the lead. I look in
- 6:00Speaker 1: the box score. They've scored 30 points in the fourth quarter.
- 6:08Speaker 1: I'm looking at the rest of the box score. Bo
- 6:11Speaker 1: Nix is playing like cheeks. I don't understand how this
- 6:16Speaker 1: is possible. Then the Giants get the ball back. Jackson
- 6:21Speaker 1: Dart also looking like cheeks as he's trying to make
- 6:24Speaker 1: it happen. I'm like, oh, baby, this is cool. Everything
- 6:26Speaker 1: will be fine. Next thing I know, it's a pass
- 6:33Speaker 1: that looked like it came up this short of the
- 6:35Speaker 1: first down marker, but it don't even matter because then
- 6:38Speaker 1: it was a rough in the passer penalty. The Giants
- 6:42Speaker 1: go down there. They score a touchdown. They got a
- 6:46Speaker 1: two-point lead. Just got to kick the extra point. And
- 6:49Speaker 1: I ain't even see that. I phoned the computer shut
- 6:51Speaker 1: because I was starving. I told Ryan what time we
- 6:54Speaker 1: was going to record. And I'm like, hey, man, I
- 6:56Speaker 1: got to go get this food. They let the Broncos
- 7:01Speaker 1: run out the clock without me. By the time I
- 7:05Speaker 1: get downstairs to eat my food, the Broncos have won
- 7:10Speaker 1: because the Giants have missed the extra point. I ain't
- 7:13Speaker 1: even watched the extra point. The Giants missed the extra point. Oh,
- 7:18Speaker 1: and there was a pass interference penalty against my guy,
- 7:20Speaker 1: Riley Moss. Put a pin in that point. I don't
- 7:25Speaker 1: understand how any of this happened. I don't know how
- 7:27Speaker 1: a team with Bo Nix as a quarterback is capable
- 7:29Speaker 1: of scoring 33 points in a quarter. I don't see
- 7:32Speaker 1: exactly how the Giants managed to lose that game. I
- 7:35Speaker 1: don't understand any of it. But I have to ask
- 7:38Speaker 1: you this, Ryan, because maybe you saw it. You live
- 7:40Speaker 1: in New York. You know, you might have seen it.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Did Brian Daybo break anything? Like, visibly? Oh, yeah.
- 7:46Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 7:47Speaker 2: He was. Yeah, you could see the raid. You know,
- 7:50Speaker 2: he's like a cartoon character where you see the smoke
- 7:52Speaker 2: coming out of his ears.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Yes.
- 7:54Speaker 2: And he's that level of bald where his face gets red. Yes.
- 7:59Speaker 1: He's holding on to his job every week, right?
- 8:03Speaker 2: And he has decided that the person that he's entrusting
- 8:07Speaker 2: to keep his job is Jackson Dart.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Well, for what it's worth, I think Russell Wilson decided
- 8:13Speaker 1: that the person that was going to help him keep
- 8:15Speaker 1: his job was Jackson Dart. I finally saw that clip
- 8:17Speaker 1: of him running into the blue tent trying to figure
- 8:19Speaker 1: out if Jackson Dart was okay last week. Yeah.
- 8:23Speaker 2: Yeah, could you be a little less concussed so I
- 8:25Speaker 2: don't have to watch Russell Wilson play football anymore?
- 8:27Speaker 1: Hey, hey, hey, hey, he's all right, he's all right.
- 8:29Speaker 1: How many fingers am I holding up? Cool, let's go, right?
- 8:32Speaker 1: I could not believe any of that happened. Now, there
- 8:34Speaker 1: was a pass interference on Riley Moss. I just brought
- 8:36Speaker 1: that up that that happened. And like, look, I've been
- 8:39Speaker 1: talking about this, and this is the truth, and it's
- 8:40Speaker 1: a weird thing, right? In my experience, our Caucasian brothers
- 8:46Speaker 1: and sisters don't necessarily know how to act when one
- 8:49Speaker 1: of their own turns up in a place where they
- 8:53Speaker 1: don't expect them to be. You understand what I'm saying?
- 8:56Speaker 1: But in certain places, when it happens, It's real, like,
- 9:00Speaker 1: tangible excitement. So Jackson Dart, where he's supposed to be
- 9:04Speaker 1: at quarterback, of course. Wearing that chain, that's not where
- 9:08Speaker 1: that chain is supposed to be. But once again, our
- 9:11Speaker 1: Caucasian brothers and sisters are a little bit weird. When
- 9:13Speaker 1: the white man got on a chain, they feel like
- 9:15Speaker 1: it look a little classy. It's kind of like when
- 9:17Speaker 1: the Braves won that World Series and Jock Peterson had
- 9:20Speaker 1: his big old chain, but it was pearls. Suddenly his
- 9:23Speaker 1: was cooler than everybody else, right? You get it. It's
- 9:27Speaker 1: kind of like Macklemore. Anyway, they like Jackson Dart. But
- 9:32Speaker 1: then Scatterboo, Scatterboo not supposed to be playing running back
- 9:35Speaker 1: no more. I don't understand why our Caucasian brothers and
- 9:38Speaker 1: sisters have not wrapped their arms around Will Shipley of
- 9:41Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Eagles. But Scatterboo is their type. But the
- 9:44Speaker 1: other reason to be fair to Scatterboo is he got
- 9:46Speaker 1: a running back type of game that everybody likes. I
- 9:49Speaker 1: was telling you about that last week. People like dope
- 9:51Speaker 1: running backs. He's there, right? Like he ain't no John Riggins,
- 9:56Speaker 1: but they gonna say he is. You feel me? like
- 10:00Speaker 1: that's gonna go down but whatever they all real excited
- 10:03Speaker 1: about him but on the other side is our man
- 10:06Speaker 1: riley moss and i find that when there is generally
- 10:10Speaker 1: speaking a caucasian brother playing quarterback White people treat him
- 10:17Speaker 1: like they treat white basketball players, which is to say
- 10:22Speaker 1: with startling levels of skepticism. You feel me? Like the
- 10:27Speaker 1: self-hate seems to come out a little bit. The crab
- 10:30Speaker 1: in a barrel phenomenon tend to come up. And that's
- 10:32Speaker 1: how I felt when they called that pass interference on
- 10:35Speaker 1: Riley Moss. I was like, come on, man, it's just profiling.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I didn't think that was no penalty. Y'all just don't
- 10:39Speaker 1: believe that man was capable of playing defense. That's all
- 10:41Speaker 1: it is. That's all it is. You'll lie to yourself
- 10:43Speaker 1: about Jackson Dart. You'll lie to yourself about Scatterboo. You
- 10:45Speaker 1: got Riley Moss out here and you telling him that
- 10:47Speaker 1: he got to be twice as good. How'd that work?
- 10:52Speaker 1: Ain't nobody got no harder job in the NFL than
- 10:53Speaker 1: Riley Moss does. On one side of him is probably
- 10:57Speaker 1: the best corner in the league. And we always talk
- 10:59Speaker 1: about that corner that gets picked on. Now imagine that
- 11:02Speaker 1: corner that gets picked on is a white dude from Iowa.
- 11:06Speaker 1: I don't even know if he's from Iowa, but he
- 11:08Speaker 1: went to Iowa. And I feel like you got to
- 11:11Speaker 1: be from Iowa to decide you're going to do that. Anyway,
- 11:14Speaker 1: they just over there picking on that man. I'd be
- 11:16Speaker 1: rooting for him, right? I don't know why it is
- 11:18Speaker 1: that the homie coop. Coop get a lot more attention
- 11:21Speaker 1: than Riley Moss. Riley Moss, his OG. Riley Moss did
- 11:23Speaker 1: it first. Nobody really talk about it. Me and Dominique
- 11:26Speaker 1: was the only ones that's out here. And you know why?
- 11:28Speaker 1: Because we about freedom and equality. You know what I'm saying? Right?
- 11:33Speaker 1: Y'all out here treating Scatterboo like a pioneer. They treating
- 11:35Speaker 1: Riley Moss like he DEI. And not like DEI used
- 11:39Speaker 1: to be. Like right now, you can go to jail
- 11:41Speaker 1: for that shit. That's all I'm saying. That's all I'm asking.
- 11:47Speaker 1: That's all I'm trying to figure out. By the way,
- 11:49Speaker 1: for you watching on YouTube, I'm doing this in a hotel. Therefore,
- 11:53Speaker 1: I got to keep the laptop to the left. So
- 11:54Speaker 1: if it look like I'm looking, I'm not paying attention.
- 11:56Speaker 1: I'm locked in, baby. I'm trying to give you the
- 11:58Speaker 1: show as I ordinarily do it. We play the game
- 12:00Speaker 1: a little bit different. But yeah, that game was wild.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Never dawned on me that when I woke up this morning,
- 12:05Speaker 1: I would spend 10 minutes talking about the New York
- 12:07Speaker 1: Giants and the Denver Broncos. Never dawned on me. What
- 12:10Speaker 1: we was thinking we was going to talk about is
- 12:11Speaker 1: I felt like this Sunday was a raucous Sunday for
- 12:16Speaker 1: starting quarterbacks not to be confused with. franchise quarterbacks. Think
- 12:21Speaker 1: about this for a sec. I feel like the two
- 12:26Speaker 1: top candidates right now for MVP are Baker Mayfield and
- 12:30Speaker 1: Dak Prescott. Two starting quarterbacks. Ron, I don't know how
- 12:35Speaker 1: much you saw that Dallas game, but Dak was dealing.
- 12:40Speaker 2: When he looks good, and he's had moments like this
- 12:44Speaker 2: through the last five years, where he's, I mean, Where
- 12:48Speaker 2: he's throwing the ball over the field. And I forgot
- 12:50Speaker 2: that C.D. Lamb was back until we hit him for
- 12:52Speaker 2: that giant touchdown.
- 12:54Speaker 1: That was the moment I realized it, too. Like, that's
- 12:56Speaker 1: the best pass I've ever seen Dak throw on that
- 12:59Speaker 1: square end.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:01Speaker 1: And then you made them dudes run into each other.
- 13:03Speaker 2: I mean, he's big. He steps up in the pocket.
- 13:05Speaker 2: I mean, and he's hitting C.D.
- 13:07Speaker 3: Lamb.
- 13:08Speaker 2: He's throwing the ball all over the yard. I put
- 13:10Speaker 2: these stats in for you. 71% completing 71% of his
- 13:17Speaker 2: passes over a thousand yards, 14 touchdowns, no picks.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Amen. And that CD lamb, George Pickens combination is in
- 13:27Speaker 1: a similar weight class with the Jamar Chase T Higgins.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Cause Pickens looks incredible.
- 13:34Speaker 2: I mean, Pickens certainly looks incredible. And he's your number two. Yes.
- 13:38Speaker 1: But also let us not forget. We've not seen NFL
- 13:41Speaker 1: George Pickens with a real live quarterback.
- 13:44Speaker 2: And all of a sudden he starts behaving. Who knew?
- 13:50Speaker 1: Like I hate to use that word, right? Except he
- 13:53Speaker 1: does such childish things when he's not on the straight
- 13:56Speaker 1: and narrow.
- 13:57Speaker 2: That word sounds even worse. I want to say that word.
- 13:59Speaker 2: I feel worse saying it coming from me, obviously. But like,
- 14:02Speaker 2: you know.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Produces slim shade. He needs to be careful.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Those are the words. But I feel like there's about
- 14:09Speaker 2: a list of five people I can get away with.
- 14:10Speaker 2: I think George Pickens is one of them.
- 14:12Speaker 1: I think it's fair. I think it's fair. But no,
- 14:14Speaker 1: they look, if they can play the littlest bit of defense,
- 14:17Speaker 1: because now the Cowboys fans are talking about this like,
- 14:22Speaker 1: if they can get Max Crosby in trade, do you
- 14:24Speaker 1: do it? Now, I will just make this point that
- 14:27Speaker 1: if you made the Michael Parsons trade just so you
- 14:29Speaker 1: could get Max Crosby, that's hustling backwards.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Yes.
- 14:33Speaker 1: That's not the way to do this. But they got
- 14:35Speaker 1: to get some heat because the Make-A-Wish Foundation, if you
- 14:38Speaker 1: don't get no pressure, it's just going to continue to
- 14:40Speaker 1: be a charitable contribution. But they can put some points up.
- 14:45Speaker 1: By the way, this is one week removed from Rico
- 14:47Speaker 1: Dowdle making his Hall of Fame case against them last week.
- 14:52Speaker 1: They lost like, what, 30-3 or something ridiculous like that?
- 14:55Speaker 2: I think they lost close game, but I think Rico
- 14:58Speaker 2: Dowdle might have had 200 yards.
- 15:00Speaker 1: You're right.
- 15:00Speaker 2: You're right. It was a close game, but Rico Dotto might, like,
- 15:03Speaker 2: you know, someone who used to play for the Cowboys.
- 15:07Speaker 2: It was the Rico Dotto revenge game.
- 15:09Speaker 1: That's right. The Panthers did that to the Falcons because
- 15:12Speaker 1: of course.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Right, right, right, right, right.
- 15:13Speaker 1: But what made it worse was Rico Dotto told them
- 15:16Speaker 1: to buckle up, and they still ran for like 200-something
- 15:19Speaker 1: yards on them.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 15:21Speaker 1: They were like, yes, we're buckling up to make your
- 15:24Speaker 1: dreams come true. That's all they could do. But, man,
- 15:26Speaker 1: if they could play a little bit of defense, they
- 15:29Speaker 1: are going to be something. Speaking of starting quarterbacks, every
- 15:35Speaker 1: time we say to ourselves, it's Indianapolis Colts thing. Like,
- 15:40Speaker 1: come on, what are we really talking about here? For
- 15:43Speaker 1: whatever reason, the Chargers dressed up like mustard bottles and
- 15:47Speaker 1: went out there and got their teeth kicked in. Heath
- 15:51Speaker 1: kicked in. Now, I think that we are all in
- 15:54Speaker 1: a place where we're still trying to figure out exactly
- 15:56Speaker 1: how good the Cardinals, I mean, not the Cardinals, the Chargers,
- 15:59Speaker 1: how good the Chargers are. But we all generally believe
- 16:02Speaker 1: that they were good, right? Or at least okay. They
- 16:05Speaker 1: are four and three, but I still feel like we
- 16:07Speaker 1: largely believe that they're a pretty good team. Or like
- 16:10Speaker 1: a team that I think is going to make the playoffs.
- 16:14Speaker 1: There was no question who the better team was in
- 16:16Speaker 1: this game.
- 16:18Speaker 3: None.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Like, is this real? Is this happening? Is this, is
- 16:24Speaker 1: this like, this is the thing. This is, this is
- 16:27Speaker 1: a wild situation to watch where again, Daniel Jones starting quarterback,
- 16:31Speaker 1: how much money is he going to make next year?
- 16:33Speaker 1: He's on a 14 year prove it deal. How much
- 16:36Speaker 1: money is it going to cost the Colts to keep him?
- 16:39Speaker 1: Because they have to keep him because what they can't
- 16:42Speaker 1: do is go back to Anthony Richardson.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:46Speaker 2: I mean, is it like, You're going to look at
- 16:50Speaker 2: what Sam Darnold got, what Baker got a couple of
- 16:52Speaker 2: years ago.
- 16:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:54Speaker 2: But, I mean, he comes out here. I mean, he's
- 16:57Speaker 2: throwing for over eight and a half yards in an attempt,
- 16:59Speaker 2: and I think he put up a 113 rating in
- 17:01Speaker 2: this game. He's making throws. It is not the dink
- 17:04Speaker 2: and duck offense out there. I mean, Shane Sheldon clearly
- 17:07Speaker 2: has a way of getting things out of slightly limited quarterbacks.
- 17:11Speaker 1: But I'm going to warn you guys, okay? And I
- 17:13Speaker 1: think that this is an important warning. You tell me
- 17:15Speaker 1: if I'm wrong here. Do you remember the 2015 season
- 17:20Speaker 1: of Ryan Fitzpatrick with the Jets, the Fitzmagic season, where
- 17:23Speaker 1: somebody broke Geno's face in training camp, and then Fitzpatrick
- 17:27Speaker 1: got the job and then threw the season away with
- 17:29Speaker 1: five or six interceptions in the last week of the year,
- 17:31Speaker 1: and then he was the starter next year, and he
- 17:33Speaker 1: wound up getting benched for Geno, who in classic Geno
- 17:36Speaker 1: Smith luck, went out there and tore his ACL in
- 17:39Speaker 1: the game that was played right after. But the return
- 17:42Speaker 1: to earth happened. I'll give you another example. I don't
- 17:45Speaker 1: even know if you remember this one. In 2008, you
- 17:47Speaker 1: remember when Vince Young went for that drive and didn't
- 17:50Speaker 1: tell nobody and everybody freaked out?
- 17:52Speaker 2: Yep.
- 17:53Speaker 1: And he lost his job to Cary Collins, and I
- 17:54Speaker 1: want to say they went 13-3 that year. They walked.
- 17:58Speaker 1: And then the next year, Cary Collins went back to
- 18:01Speaker 1: being Cary Collins, and they had to get that job
- 18:04Speaker 1: back to Vince Young for a little while.
- 18:05Speaker 2: I mean, remember the last two weeks of Sam Darnold
- 18:08Speaker 2: last year?
- 18:09Speaker 4: Yes.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Like, I mean, it was like... Sam Darnold was playing
- 18:13Speaker 2: for the one seed and then plays the two worst
- 18:15Speaker 2: games of the season back-to-back and they have to ship
- 18:17Speaker 2: him off for Seattle for a quarterback who played maybe, what,
- 18:20Speaker 2: a half a game, two games this year? Right, right.
- 18:23Speaker 1: But I'm saying there is a world in which Anthony
- 18:26Speaker 1: Richardson gets this job back from Daniel Jones. It ain't
- 18:29Speaker 1: happening no time soon.
- 18:30Speaker 3: No.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Just to be clear. But there's a world where they
- 18:34Speaker 1: wind up.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Put him back in. No, no, no, no. Just put
- 18:38Speaker 1: him back in. Just put him back in. But that's
- 18:42Speaker 1: kind of what we got. Also, by the way, great
- 18:44Speaker 1: game from Jalen Hurts this week. All of us have
- 18:48Speaker 1: talked a lot about how Brian Flores and he be
- 18:50Speaker 1: confounding people. The Eagles made what I thought were a
- 18:54Speaker 1: couple of dumb calls at the end. One was that
- 18:56Speaker 1: second down where they're trying to ice the clock. And
- 18:59Speaker 1: Flores called a zero blitz. And so Hurts threw a
- 19:02Speaker 1: bad pass because the heat was coming. And it stopped
- 19:05Speaker 1: the clock with like a minute 40 left. The Vikings
- 19:07Speaker 1: had only used one of their timeouts. It looked like
- 19:09Speaker 1: they were going to get the ball back. Flores did
- 19:12Speaker 1: something not that bright and called another zero blitz. At
- 19:15Speaker 1: this time, the Eagles were ready for it, and they
- 19:17Speaker 1: threw it down the field and nailed it to ice
- 19:20Speaker 1: that game. Like, Jalen Hurts got it done in that one.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Both receivers had 100 yards. Everybody's going to be happy. A.J.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Brown ain't reading books. You know what I'm saying? They
- 19:29Speaker 1: got it done. I just got to make sure some
- 19:31Speaker 1: of y'all think that I be hating. Man, I was
- 19:33Speaker 1: doing some wedding activities, right? And so this wedding I
- 19:36Speaker 1: was supposed to go to, It's a Sunday wedding, and
- 19:39Speaker 1: I was not able to make it to Sunday because
- 19:40Speaker 1: I had to do this podcast or whatever. So I'm
- 19:42Speaker 1: kicking it at the wedding. This stuff and this cat,
- 19:45Speaker 1: he come up to me. Eagles fan. You know, this
- 19:48Speaker 1: happens when I go to weddings, man. They know who
- 19:49Speaker 1: you are. you know you're a sports guy so you
- 19:51Speaker 1: know they get their chance so My man's talking to me,
- 19:53Speaker 1: real cool cat, but he keep talking to me about
- 19:55Speaker 1: the Eagles, keep talking to me about the Eagles. And
- 19:57Speaker 1: he's like, we're going to beat the Vikings. We're going
- 19:58Speaker 1: to beat the Vikings. We're going to beat the Vikings.
- 19:59Speaker 1: I'm like, all right, man, you're going to do that.
- 20:01Speaker 1: My man's going to play. All right, you know, you're
- 20:02Speaker 1: going to do that. That's okay. He's like, all right,
- 20:04Speaker 1: I'll bet you $ 20 that the Eagles are going to win.
- 20:06Speaker 1: He's like, and we're going to collect on it at
- 20:08Speaker 1: the wedding. I said, cool, $ 20. Dapped him up. Here's
- 20:12Speaker 1: what he ain't realize. And I sent it to somebody
- 20:15Speaker 1: to show it to him. I was the Magic Johnson
- 20:17Speaker 1: meme about that wedding. I was, I'm not going to
- 20:21Speaker 1: be there. And I wasn't. The new world order of
- 20:31Speaker 1: college football because of, you know, transfer portal stuff, a
- 20:35Speaker 1: bunch of other things. Anyway, you got to fire coaches
- 20:37Speaker 1: a lot sooner than you used to. You used to
- 20:39Speaker 1: be able to wait until the season, the end of
- 20:40Speaker 1: the season. Nah, you got to do that stuff in
- 20:42Speaker 1: the middle of the year to the point where even
- 20:43Speaker 1: if you ain't been fired yet, we know what's going
- 20:45Speaker 1: to happen. Billy Napier, thank you for your service. They
- 20:48Speaker 1: went ahead and let him go on Monday. After a win,
- 20:51Speaker 1: by the way. That's a new thing that happens. They
- 20:54Speaker 1: don't even necessarily wait until you do something indefensible.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Is that the reverse crew if you beat Mississippi State
- 20:59Speaker 2: and get fired?
- 21:01Speaker 1: Well, isn't that what happened to Jimbo? I believe, if
- 21:03Speaker 1: I'm not mistaken, Jimbo won a game against Mississippi State.
- 21:06Speaker 2: Still got fired.
- 21:06Speaker 1: And they were like, how'd you like $ 70 million? I'd
- 21:09Speaker 1: love $ 70 million. And I get to leave College Station.
- 21:12Speaker 1: I wish a motherfucker would alpha me $ 70 million to
- 21:14Speaker 1: leave College Station.
- 21:17Speaker 2: I'd do a lot more for a lot less.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Oh, my God. It's the greatest. I'd give you $ 70
- 21:21Speaker 1: million to leave College Station. What are you talking about?
- 21:24Speaker 1: So anyway, the fire building Napier, Florida State lost to,
- 21:27Speaker 1: was it Stanford?
- 21:27Speaker 4: Stanford.
- 21:31Speaker 1: They lost to Stanford. You know that man is getting fired. Like,
- 21:36Speaker 1: time is up for him. All these jobs are open.
- 21:38Speaker 1: UCLA is open. And by the way, I have made
- 21:40Speaker 1: the point that maybe nepotism had gone well because they
- 21:43Speaker 1: made Rick Neuheisel's son the offensive coordinator. The offense got together.
- 21:48Speaker 1: I realize I never found out who their interim coach was.
- 21:50Speaker 1: And everywhere I go, they keep showing the Neuheisel kid.
- 21:53Speaker 1: And now I know why I didn't know who their
- 21:55Speaker 1: interim coach was, because he's black. And it turned this
- 21:58Speaker 1: whole goddamn thing around. And not one person is like, boy,
- 22:00Speaker 1: you might want to give that Tim Skipper guy a
- 22:02Speaker 1: head job. Maybe it's because you didn't know his name
- 22:04Speaker 1: was Tim Skipper. Because I didn't know his name was
- 22:06Speaker 1: Tim Skipper. I saw the dude's last name was Skipper.
- 22:08Speaker 1: I was like, damn, like my old boss? I don't
- 22:10Speaker 1: think so, at least. You know what I'm saying? Like, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 22:13Speaker 1: What's going on here? But anyway, that job's going to
- 22:15Speaker 1: be open. They're going to fire that coach at Wisconsin,
- 22:18Speaker 1: I'm certain. At some point, who else do we know
- 22:21Speaker 1: is going to lose? Auburn is looking real dicey.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Hugh Freeze is going to lose his job. Bill Belichick's
- 22:25Speaker 2: going to lose his job. Yes, yes. Lincoln Riley might
- 22:30Speaker 2: lose his job.
- 22:31Speaker 1: It's on the board.
- 22:32Speaker 2: Brian Kelly might lose his job.
- 22:34Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 22:35Speaker 1: I forgot you guys lost to Vanderbilt. And you watched
- 22:38Speaker 1: the game. I did not. And I was in New Orleans,
- 22:40Speaker 1: and I did not watch the game because I didn't
- 22:42Speaker 1: want to be around any invested parties and worst-case scenario
- 22:45Speaker 1: went down. You made the right call. From what you
- 22:47Speaker 1: have told me, they lost.
- 22:50Speaker 2: They lost.
- 22:50Speaker 1: This is not a fluke.
- 22:52Speaker 2: They lost. They were outclassed. That game could have easily
- 22:55Speaker 2: been three scores.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Wow.
- 22:58Speaker 2: It's bad.
- 22:58Speaker 1: Yeah. Brian Kelly. These moves like what happened with James Franklin,
- 23:05Speaker 1: it accelerates it for everybody else. The combination of James
- 23:08Speaker 1: Franklin getting fired and Indiana still kicking people's teeth in.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Last year felt fluky. This year looked like they got
- 23:16Speaker 1: a team.
- 23:18Speaker 2: And they just gave their coach $ 90 million.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Right.
- 23:21Speaker 1: And see, in that combination of two things has really
- 23:25Speaker 1: It makes for a really strange world where Penn State
- 23:27Speaker 1: shows what it is that you do when you're serious
- 23:29Speaker 1: about football. Or when you just decide you don't like
- 23:31Speaker 1: how this has been feeling for a while. Okay, cool.
- 23:33Speaker 1: You go ahead and you make that move. Auburn is
- 23:36Speaker 1: in the midst of a four-game losing streak. This is
- 23:39Speaker 1: Hugh Freeze's third year. They've had a four-game losing streak
- 23:42Speaker 1: each season he's been there. And per the great researcher
- 23:46Speaker 1: Spencer Hall, a four-game losing streak the year before that too.
- 23:51Speaker 4: Okay?
- 23:53Speaker 1: You can't keep your job at Auburn with three straight
- 23:55Speaker 1: losing seasons, which is what it looks like Hugh Freeze
- 23:58Speaker 1: is going to have, okay? You can't keep hitting the
- 24:01Speaker 1: ball into the rough, hole after hole after hole, and
- 24:07Speaker 1: think you're going to keep that job. That's not going
- 24:09Speaker 1: to happen. They're going to get him out of there, okay?
- 24:13Speaker 1: So we're talking about really good jobs, and I still
- 24:16Speaker 1: think that Florida largely counts as a really good job.
- 24:19Speaker 1: Penn State is a really good job. Florida State Not
- 24:22Speaker 1: quite as good, but in a similar class. Auburn, I contend,
- 24:26Speaker 1: is a very good job. LSU, high ceiling. low floor
- 24:31Speaker 1: kind of situation, but it's there. USC, if it comes open,
- 24:35Speaker 1: that one can be a really good job. I don't
- 24:38Speaker 1: think Penn State is actually open. I think Matt Rule
- 24:40Speaker 1: is almost guaranteed to get the Penn State job, but
- 24:42Speaker 1: then Nebraska comes open, which is a weird job. And
- 24:45Speaker 1: I'd hate to take that Nebraska job. Once Kurt Cignetti
- 24:48Speaker 1: showed proof of concept of what can be done at Indiana,
- 24:52Speaker 1: which means at Nebraska, they are looking at you like,
- 24:54Speaker 1: why can't we be Indiana? This is happening all over
- 24:57Speaker 1: the board. This is what I want to bring up
- 24:59Speaker 1: about that and all of this. We talked, I guess
- 25:03Speaker 1: it was last week, maybe the week before, about the
- 25:05Speaker 1: report that the Big Ten was considering taking up infusion
- 25:12Speaker 1: of cash from private equity. And you guys know how
- 25:16Speaker 1: I feel about private equity. And I raised the question,
- 25:18Speaker 1: which I think is always the right question, which is,
- 25:21Speaker 1: what is private equity ever made better? All right. But
- 25:25Speaker 1: I realized I was looking at this the wrong way.
- 25:27Speaker 1: And I didn't realize I was looking at it the
- 25:29Speaker 1: wrong way until I saw a tweet from Cody Campbell.
- 25:32Speaker 1: And if you guys don't know who Cody Campbell is,
- 25:33Speaker 1: he's a fairly interesting figure in modern college football. Cody Campbell,
- 25:37Speaker 1: I believe, is the chairman of the board of trustees
- 25:40Speaker 1: at Texas Tech. I think he was a Texas Tech
- 25:42Speaker 1: football player. Don't quote me on that, but I think
- 25:44Speaker 1: he was. Anyway, Cody Campbell is a billionaire billionaire. And
- 25:48Speaker 1: if you have wondered why it is that Texas Tech
- 25:51Speaker 1: seems to be better than they used to be, it's
- 25:53Speaker 1: because Cody Campbell out here is spending that money. All right.
- 25:57Speaker 1: So anyway, Campbell sends this tweet and he says, basically,
- 26:04Speaker 1: this private equity deal is terrible. I think he may
- 26:08Speaker 1: have used the term payday loan, but if he didn't,
- 26:10Speaker 1: other people have used the term payday loan. He's just
- 26:12Speaker 1: saying that this is an infusion of cash that they need.
- 26:15Speaker 1: and that everybody needs this cash, but the big reason
- 26:17Speaker 1: they need the cash is the day was always going
- 26:20Speaker 1: to come where you were going to have to pay
- 26:22Speaker 1: the players, not just this NIL farce that we have
- 26:25Speaker 1: right now. Schools were going to have to reach into
- 26:27Speaker 1: their own pockets to pay the players. Everybody knew this
- 26:31Speaker 1: day was coming. And they never really planned for it.
- 26:34Speaker 1: And that is right in line with everything we know
- 26:36Speaker 1: about college football. They knew that NIL someday was coming,
- 26:39Speaker 1: all of this. And then when it was coming, everybody
- 26:42Speaker 1: was in chaos. Nobody knows what to do, right? Because
- 26:44Speaker 1: they just, this reality has been staring them in the
- 26:47Speaker 1: face for God knows how long. And they never got
- 26:50Speaker 1: out there and they were never prepared to do anything
- 26:51Speaker 1: about it. And so his thing is now, because you
- 26:55Speaker 1: haven't prepared, now you're going to need a payday loan, right?
- 27:00Speaker 1: Now what you going to do? It's a terrible deal
- 27:03Speaker 1: and you shouldn't take it. That's his outlook. But it
- 27:06Speaker 1: was the thought, what hadn't dawned on me was that
- 27:10Speaker 1: I was looking at this when I talked about it
- 27:12Speaker 1: two weeks ago as though the Big Ten was being greedy.
- 27:16Speaker 1: You're making all this money from CBS. You're making all
- 27:19Speaker 1: this money in all these different ways. And you still
- 27:23Speaker 1: want to take more cash. It's worth noting the two
- 27:26Speaker 1: schools that seem to be pushing back the hardest on
- 27:29Speaker 1: this payday loan are the ones that got the most money,
- 27:33Speaker 1: Ohio State and Michigan. They're the ones that are like,
- 27:35Speaker 1: this is a bad idea because the Big Ten wants
- 27:37Speaker 1: to do this unanimously. They're like, nah, this isn't it.
- 27:40Speaker 1: This isn't the move to make. But what I realized
- 27:42Speaker 1: after reading what Campbell had to say and thinking about
- 27:44Speaker 1: this a little bit more and why I brought up
- 27:46Speaker 1: all this movement with the coaches before, it feels like
- 27:52Speaker 1: mutually assured destruction is on the way. Now, I don't
- 27:57Speaker 1: want to guarantee that that's what's happening, but it feels
- 28:00Speaker 1: like it. And so this is the context I want
- 28:03Speaker 1: to give. And just to kind of give everybody, you know,
- 28:04Speaker 1: something to think about. If you listen to the show,
- 28:06Speaker 1: you know, I am a pig and slop when it
- 28:09Speaker 1: comes to talking about these things. You know this about me. Okay.
- 28:15Speaker 1: What people have to remember is that college football programs
- 28:18Speaker 1: are are revenue max or just college sports in general
- 28:22Speaker 1: is probably a better way to put it. They are
- 28:24Speaker 1: revenue maximizing operations, which is not to be confused with
- 28:30Speaker 1: a profit maximizing organization because a profit maximizing organization is
- 28:38Speaker 1: trying to figure out how to keep these costs down.
- 28:41Speaker 1: A really good college football program is looking for ways
- 28:47Speaker 1: to spend money. Like when people talk about what are,
- 28:51Speaker 1: not even people, I'm going too far there. What I've
- 28:54Speaker 1: been told makes Alabama a great job if you're somebody
- 28:58Speaker 1: like Nick Saban, it's very simple. If Nick Saban says
- 29:04Speaker 1: we need this because it's going to make football better,
- 29:09Speaker 1: then that money's going to be spent and they're going
- 29:11Speaker 1: to make the football better, right? Nick Saban comes in,
- 29:14Speaker 1: it's like, look, we need a $ 35, 000, uh, air conditioning
- 29:17Speaker 1: in the weight room because the boys get hot. It'll
- 29:19Speaker 1: be a $ 35, 000 air conditioning in there. I mean, let
- 29:21Speaker 1: me stop lying. That's probably exactly what it costs if
- 29:23Speaker 1: that water in my house costs $ 15, 000. You understand what
- 29:27Speaker 1: I'm saying? You can come up with exorbitant numbers. And
- 29:29Speaker 1: if Nick Saban could convince them, and I guess Callen
- 29:31Speaker 1: DeBoer now too, that it would make the football team better,
- 29:34Speaker 1: it was going to be spent. That's the kind of
- 29:36Speaker 1: arms race that this is because there are no shareholders.
- 29:40Speaker 1: There are no dividends to pay out. Get the money,
- 29:43Speaker 1: spend the money, win. And if you're winning, you can't
- 29:48Speaker 1: be known in the streets as a program that doesn't
- 29:51Speaker 1: spend money to keep up with the winning. And so
- 29:55Speaker 1: what has happened is all these different things have stacked up.
- 29:58Speaker 1: And with these schools in the Big Ten, my guy
- 30:00Speaker 1: Pat Forty at SI had written something about this. Like
- 30:02Speaker 1: a big thing that's happened is all these stadium expansions,
- 30:05Speaker 1: the long-term debt from that, those bills are coming due.
- 30:09Speaker 1: All this money that people have kept spending because the
- 30:12Speaker 1: game is to spend the money once you get it.
- 30:14Speaker 1: Now all these bills are coming due and now you
- 30:17Speaker 1: got to pay the players. Right? College athletic programs need
- 30:24Speaker 1: to chill out on spending all that money. But they
- 30:29Speaker 1: can only chill out on spending all that money if
- 30:33Speaker 1: everybody decides to chill out on spending all that money.
- 30:38Speaker 1: That's the only way, all right? Indiana just said they're
- 30:42Speaker 1: willing to spend $ 11 million to pay a head coach.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Indiana football. So what's Penn State got to pay their
- 30:52Speaker 1: coach if they want to show they're serious? Keeping in mind,
- 30:58Speaker 1: they're going to have to pay some share of the
- 31:00Speaker 1: $ 50 million to James Franklin. Right.
- 31:05Speaker 4: Right.
- 31:07Speaker 3: Right.
- 31:08Speaker 2: And keep in mind that all of these jobs and
- 31:11Speaker 2: all of these openings are represented by primarily two agents.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Jimmy Sexton. And Trace Armstrong. Oh, Trace.
- 31:19Speaker 1: I forgot about my old buddy, Trace.
- 31:22Speaker 2: Yes. So you were not only, like, if you think
- 31:26Speaker 2: $ 11 million is not the ceiling, it's the floor.
- 31:29Speaker 1: Right.
- 31:30Speaker 2: For these new extensions. Yes.
- 31:32Speaker 4: Right.
- 31:32Speaker 1: Look, Florida's going to have to cut Billy Napier a
- 31:34Speaker 1: $ 10 million check very soon and then another $ 10 million
- 31:37Speaker 1: after that. And then, look, I don't know if they're
- 31:40Speaker 1: going to hire Lane Kiffin, but that's the plan. That
- 31:43Speaker 1: is a spiritual— That's the idea.
- 31:45Speaker 2: That's certainly what's on top of their board. I mean,
- 31:48Speaker 2: Florida State's talking about, on three reported today, if they
- 31:52Speaker 2: got rid of Norvell and his staff, it's $ 100 million.
- 31:55Speaker 1: And they don't really have any money. Like the whole
- 31:59Speaker 1: thing with Florida State always is that they don't have
- 32:02Speaker 1: any money. I'm sure they had to pay Willie money
- 32:04Speaker 1: when they got Willie out of there to bring Dorval in.
- 32:07Speaker 1: But it's the spending, the spending, the spending. And then
- 32:09Speaker 1: the impatience about keeping your coach. You can't. You got
- 32:13Speaker 1: to realize this. And I think those of you who
- 32:15Speaker 1: are young will not know what day. There used to
- 32:17Speaker 1: be a time where people could keep a job at
- 32:19Speaker 1: a major university for 10 years and never have a
- 32:21Speaker 1: winning record. Like, I mean, obviously you couldn't do that
- 32:23Speaker 1: at Alabama, but you could do that at one of
- 32:25Speaker 1: those mid to lower tier schools. Like there was a
- 32:28Speaker 1: realistic understanding that, hey, man, sometimes it's just going to
- 32:30Speaker 1: be like that. We know who we are. Nobody's playing
- 32:33Speaker 1: that game anymore. Therefore, nobody can slow down the spending.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Nobody can stop it. It's only going to get bigger
- 32:42Speaker 1: and bigger. and bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger.
- 32:46Speaker 1: And I think that this actually becomes exacerbated by the
- 32:49Speaker 1: playoff because there are more spaces for people to play for. Therefore,
- 32:54Speaker 1: more benchmarks for people to reach. Therefore, more reasons for
- 32:57Speaker 1: people to think that they should be better. It's one thing, like,
- 33:01Speaker 1: I always talk about this. When Wake Forest won the
- 33:04Speaker 1: ACC in 2006, I felt like half the coaches in
- 33:06Speaker 1: the conference were fired within two years. Because once the
- 33:09Speaker 1: smallest school in the conference can do it, then nobody
- 33:10Speaker 1: else has any excuse. You see what I'm saying? But
- 33:13Speaker 1: that's because Wake Forest went to the Orange Bowl. Indiana
- 33:18Speaker 1: goes to the playoff last year as one of the
- 33:20Speaker 1: 16 top schools. It doesn't matter that they got their
- 33:22Speaker 1: teeth kicked in. It's like, well, how come we can't
- 33:24Speaker 1: do that? You know, SMU gets to the playoff. Well, hey, man,
- 33:27Speaker 1: how come we can't do that? It's more and more
- 33:29Speaker 1: people saying that thing. And when they say that, they're like, well,
- 33:32Speaker 1: we got to do more. And the way to do
- 33:34Speaker 1: more is always spending a lot more money. That's always
- 33:40Speaker 1: what it is. And now the conference that seems to
- 33:44Speaker 1: be printing money, right? If I'm not mistaken, they got
- 33:48Speaker 1: more out of their deal than the SEC got out
- 33:50Speaker 1: of their deal with ABC, ESPN.
- 33:53Speaker 2: That is the one thing where I understand where these
- 33:56Speaker 2: Cody Campbells and these private equity types are dealing with.
- 33:59Speaker 2: The networks are taking these conferences for a ride in
- 34:02Speaker 2: negotiations every year. We went through probably 20 years where
- 34:08Speaker 2: the SEC on CBS was the biggest deal in broadcast TV,
- 34:13Speaker 2: and we're probably going to have the exact same thing
- 34:15Speaker 2: with the SEC on ABC the next 10 years.
- 34:19Speaker 1: Yeah, but they're all still making boatloads of money.
- 34:22Speaker 2: Correct, correct, correct. They're obviously still making money hand over fist.
- 34:26Speaker 1: Yeah, and it ain't enough. And by the way, I
- 34:29Speaker 1: understand why it's not enough. Like once you get the
- 34:32Speaker 1: systemic factors and put all that stuff together, I'm not
- 34:34Speaker 1: judging them so much for the fact that it's not enough.
- 34:36Speaker 1: I'm telling you it's never going to stop. But if
- 34:39Speaker 1: it doesn't stop, this is going to fall apart. This
- 34:43Speaker 1: is unsustainable, the rate at which all of these things
- 34:46Speaker 1: are happening. it can only go up so much more, right?
- 34:53Speaker 1: Not everybody's supposed to fire their coach every three years.
- 34:56Speaker 1: Not everybody's supposed to have these sorts of expectations. Again,
- 35:00Speaker 1: I don't know, like I was talking to an Uber
- 35:02Speaker 1: driver today who was talking about like the pressure on
- 35:04Speaker 1: parents for what you provide for your kids and allow
- 35:08Speaker 1: them that is created by Instagram because now everybody can
- 35:10Speaker 1: see what everybody else has, right? And cable streaming, everything else, whatever.
- 35:16Speaker 1: But everything is so interconnected in a way that everybody
- 35:19Speaker 1: sees what everybody else has. And that makes people more envious.
- 35:22Speaker 1: And that makes people more jealous. And that makes people want, again,
- 35:25Speaker 1: if Indiana can do it, why can't we? All this
- 35:28Speaker 1: stuff gets ramped up. But I'm just telling you, just watch.
- 35:31Speaker 1: Because if the Big Ten ever does eventually take that
- 35:34Speaker 1: private equity deal, and I think they will, maybe not today,
- 35:36Speaker 1: but another day they will. When they do, the clock
- 35:39Speaker 1: is ticking on them because private equity has never made
- 35:42Speaker 1: anything better. And if the Big Ten can't figure out
- 35:45Speaker 1: how to do this without borrowing money, what is anybody
- 35:48Speaker 1: else going to do? I'll tell you what they're not
- 35:50Speaker 1: going to do. They're not going to stop spending money.
- 35:59Speaker 1: Football is back and so is your shot at big wins.

- 41:11Speaker 2: All right, Bo, a couple stories from the weekend. Over
- 41:14Speaker 2: the weekend, Dodgers qualified for their second World Series in
- 41:17Speaker 2: a row. Shohei Otani struck out 10, hit three home runs,
- 41:22Speaker 2: sent Dodgers to the World Series. Bo, what was your thoughts?
- 41:25Speaker 1: Okay, so Friday night, I'm walking down Frenchman Street with
- 41:29Speaker 1: my man Justin Tinsley, and he reads off what you
- 41:32Speaker 1: just told me. And he was like, I'm a Barry
- 41:36Speaker 1: Bonds guy like you're a Barry Bonds guy, but is
- 41:38Speaker 1: this the best baseball player we've ever seen? Okay? I
- 41:41Speaker 1: wake up the next morning, my good buddy Charlie Kravitz,
- 41:43Speaker 1: who works on Dominique Fosworth's podcast, he sends me a
- 41:46Speaker 1: text like, I think Otani has passed Bonds. That same afternoon,
- 41:52Speaker 1: my man Clarence is like, I am not a baseball
- 41:55Speaker 1: fan at all. but this has to be the best
- 41:58Speaker 1: player that's ever been, right? So I'm giving you three
- 42:01Speaker 1: levels of people. Kravitz, who played a lot, pretty high
- 42:03Speaker 1: level high school baseball. Like he's a baseball guy. Tinsley,
- 42:06Speaker 1: who I think is like me, a person who enjoys,
- 42:08Speaker 1: you know, is a baseball fan of sorts. And then
- 42:10Speaker 1: a person who doesn't watch baseball at all. All had
- 42:13Speaker 1: the same exact question. Is this the best baseball player
- 42:16Speaker 1: we've ever seen? He's feeling like top three, if nothing else.
- 42:22Speaker 1: Shout out to my man, Mike Sielski, though. Mike Sielski
- 42:24Speaker 1: told us there was a dude named Rick Wise who
- 42:25Speaker 1: had won game had a no-hitter, struck out 12 people,
- 42:28Speaker 1: and had two home runs. And I'm like, I don't
- 42:30Speaker 1: know if Rick Wise is still alive, but I know
- 42:32Speaker 1: if I was Rick Wise till the day I died,
- 42:34Speaker 1: you would have heard about that shit. I can't believe
- 42:36Speaker 1: that's the first time I ever heard that because Rick
- 42:38Speaker 1: Wise should be everywhere. That's Al Bundy right there.
- 42:42Speaker 2: When you say three, obviously Otani, Bonds, who's the third?
- 42:45Speaker 1: Oh, the best baseball player ever to play baseball is
- 42:49Speaker 1: Babe Ruth. It seems like a cliche thing to say,
- 42:52Speaker 1: but just remember, Babe Ruth finished with 714 home runs.
- 42:55Speaker 1: He set the career home run record, I believe, at
- 42:58Speaker 1: 190 or something like that.
- 43:01Speaker 2: No, Babe, like, we kind of yada, yada, yada it
- 43:04Speaker 2: because it was 100 years ago, but Babe Ruth was
- 43:07Speaker 2: Paul Bunyan.
- 43:08Speaker 1: You also have to remember that back then, not all
- 43:10Speaker 1: the baseballs was round.
- 43:12Speaker 4: Right.
- 43:13Speaker 1: Every baseball was a box of chocolates. Like, there wasn't
- 43:15Speaker 1: the technology. There wasn't all of this stuff, right? Just this,
- 43:19Speaker 1: you know. Everybody always says, what if Babe Ruth had
- 43:22Speaker 1: to play against black players? And all the white dudes
- 43:25Speaker 1: who played against Babe Ruth were glad they didn't because
- 43:28Speaker 1: the one they did have to play against was enough.
- 43:33Speaker 2: All right. So Anthony Edwards held his. First ever annual
- 43:38Speaker 2: award show. No, every word of this is hysterical. And
- 43:43Speaker 2: he gave out the White Boy of the Year Award.
- 43:46Speaker 2: The winner was Timothee Chalamet. Chalamet beat out Tom Cruise,
- 43:50Speaker 2: Adam Sandler, Pat McAfee, and Mr.
- 43:53Speaker 3: Beast.
- 43:54Speaker 2: Chalamet accepted this award via, you know, a video call.
- 44:00Speaker 2: Had a lot to say. He said, got a shout
- 44:02Speaker 2: out all my white boys that laid the path before me. Timberlake.
- 44:06Speaker 2: Justin Bieber, Jason Williams, Ed Sheeran. Later, Xiaomei posted a
- 44:11Speaker 2: further acceptance speech, which read, end quote, you can get
- 44:15Speaker 2: lost in the sauce, but without sauce, you are lost.
- 44:17Speaker 2: That being said, I promise to cherish this award and
- 44:20Speaker 2: do good inspiring generations of white boys to come and
- 44:22Speaker 2: to be entirely delusional about their identity and place within
- 44:26Speaker 2: the world.
- 44:27Speaker 1: First of all, only one person can get away with this,
- 44:29Speaker 1: and this is Anthony Edwards.
- 44:31Speaker 3: Correct. Number two.
- 44:31Speaker 1: Shout out to my man, John Krowinski, who covers the
- 44:35Speaker 1: Temple Wolves for The Athletic. who was nominated for reporter
- 44:38Speaker 1: of the year, because I mean, this was a whole thing. Yes.
- 44:42Speaker 1: He had a wide range of categories. He had a
- 44:44Speaker 1: reporter of the year. And Kowalski said that he was
- 44:47Speaker 1: glad to be nominated for reporter of the year. He
- 44:48Speaker 1: may have won. I'm not sure, but he said that
- 44:50Speaker 1: next year he really wants to get on the list
- 44:52Speaker 1: for white boy. It was a tough list.
- 44:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:56Speaker 1: It was a really tough list. Did you see at
- 44:59Speaker 1: hater of the year? And if you could find the
- 45:01Speaker 1: clip where he is running through all the nominees for
- 45:04Speaker 1: hater of the year, that even had on the list,
- 45:07Speaker 1: and I quote, Magic motherfucking Johnson. I don't know what
- 45:11Speaker 1: Magic Johnson did to Anthony. Oh, I think it was
- 45:13Speaker 1: you ain't won no championships. I think that was what
- 45:16Speaker 1: it was. But he ran. I can't believe this was
- 45:20Speaker 1: real life. They only made one Anthony Edwards. And I
- 45:24Speaker 1: don't know if I'm upset that there aren't more, or
- 45:26Speaker 1: I'm just glad that we get to experience the one
- 45:28Speaker 1: that we have.
- 45:29Speaker 2: I mean, honestly, it looked like a Chappelle show skate.
- 45:32Speaker 1: It did, but it was real.
- 45:34Speaker 2: It was real. It's him. It's all of his friends.
- 45:37Speaker 2: They're video. I mean, they got. Tim Vichel may called
- 45:41Speaker 2: in from like Hungary or Bulgaria where he's shooting this movie.
- 45:45Speaker 2: They got a child star from the 90s who isn't
- 45:48Speaker 2: an actress anymore. Like because he because he loves Matilda.
- 45:52Speaker 2: He loves Matilda. So they got Matilda. Like, this was
- 45:58Speaker 2: a very well, like, shockingly well-produced award show.
- 46:02Speaker 1: Whose idea was this? Like, clearly this was Adidas' idea.
- 46:06Speaker 1: Because shoe of the year, all the nominations were the AE.
- 46:09Speaker 2: Correct. I don't know if it was idea, but it
- 46:12Speaker 2: was clearly he was the creative force. Yeah. Every creative
- 46:17Speaker 2: decision was, I don't know if he spearheaded it, but
- 46:19Speaker 2: every decision from there was made by Anthony Edwards.
- 46:23Speaker 1: Yes.
- 46:24Speaker 2: All right. Oh, buddy. Speaking of NBA greats, Kevin Durant
- 46:28Speaker 2: had a clip in the new Netflix series Starting Five
- 46:31Speaker 2: talking about why he responds to Twitter trolls. He said, quote,
- 46:35Speaker 2: that's my coffee in the morning. People who have never
- 46:37Speaker 2: picked up a basketball, never ran full speed in their life,
- 46:40Speaker 2: and they tell you how to approach the game. You
- 46:42Speaker 2: can't even make your high school game, high school team.
- 46:45Speaker 2: Shut your ass up.
- 46:47Speaker 1: I am amazed that he hasn't gotten tired of it. No.
- 46:52Speaker 1: Please understand who is saying this.
- 46:54Speaker 2: Yes.
- 46:56Speaker 1: I am saying this. I used to have a Twitter
- 46:59Speaker 1: account entitled Hater Gallagher, which only served the purpose of
- 47:04Speaker 1: searching for my name and destroying people who had bad
- 47:07Speaker 1: things to say. I am that person. I shut Hater
- 47:11Speaker 1: Gallagher down 12 years ago. He's still doing this.
- 47:19Speaker 2: He is committed to the bit.
- 47:23Speaker 5: Wow.
- 47:23Speaker 2: Yeah, it is.
- 47:24Speaker 1: It is amazing. That is.
- 47:25Speaker 2: Yeah. Sometimes growth and change is important. And sometimes, you know,
- 47:31Speaker 2: might as well keep doing what you're good at.
- 47:32Speaker 1: Can I give you one last great quote from starting five?
- 47:36Speaker 1: Me and my man, Rod, talk about this because we love,
- 47:40Speaker 1: we love our guy, Joe Missoula. And, uh, Joe Missoula
- 47:45Speaker 1: had a quote in starting five about who would win
- 47:48Speaker 1: a fight between him and Jalen Brown. Have you seen this?
- 47:50Speaker 4: Yes.
- 47:51Speaker 3: Yes.
- 47:51Speaker 1: He says that I quote, if I'm going to taste death,
- 47:55Speaker 1: you're coming with me. And that's how I know Joe
- 47:58Speaker 1: Missoula has children. That's, that's your dad's lot. That's why
- 48:02Speaker 1: we have the, was the last time you fought your pops.
- 48:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 48:05Speaker 1: That's why we are trying to fight your pops. Cause
- 48:07Speaker 1: it's that line right there. And I believe he means
- 48:10Speaker 1: every word.
- 48:11Speaker 2: I promise you, um, I don't think Joe Zula has
- 48:15Speaker 2: a lot of time for playing with Jalen Brown or
- 48:18Speaker 2: his kids. No, no, no.
- 48:20Speaker 1: I love him. I love him.
- 48:23Speaker 2: He's so weird, but I love him so much.
- 48:25Speaker 1: Yo, between him and Fran Brown, the head coach at Syracuse,
- 48:28Speaker 1: it's like, okay, hashtag black weirdos. We don't really get
- 48:31Speaker 1: a lot of room to be like just flat out weirdos.
- 48:33Speaker 2: Eccentrics.
- 48:35Speaker 1: But that's exactly it. They are both eccentrics.
- 48:39Speaker 2: All right. A little bit of a global news here.
- 48:43Speaker 2: There was a heist at the Louvre Sunday morning. In
- 48:47Speaker 2: just seven minutes, thieves grabbed priceless jewels from the Louvre
- 48:52Speaker 2: using a portable electric ladder to break into the second floor.
- 48:56Speaker 2: They are still at large, Beau. What were your thoughts
- 48:59Speaker 2: when you heard this?
- 49:00Speaker 1: Two questions. Number one, how did you pull this lift
- 49:05Speaker 1: up without anybody noticing? That part floors me, right?
- 49:11Speaker 2: Right.
- 49:13Speaker 1: Number two, now that you got the stuff, now.
- 49:20Speaker 4: What?
- 49:21Speaker 3: Right?
- 49:21Speaker 1: Like, I'm assuming these guys are not stupid criminals. So,
- 49:24Speaker 1: I mean, they cleaned out the Louvre in seven minutes.
- 49:26Speaker 1: But it reminds me that I went to high school
- 49:29Speaker 1: with somebody. At least this was the story. My high
- 49:32Speaker 1: school debate captain did a summer in jail because he
- 49:37Speaker 1: stole a cop car. And if I'm not mistaken, The
- 49:40Speaker 1: way he got caught was he tried to pawn the guns. Right.
- 49:45Speaker 1: Hadn't really done the math on police issue guns, you know,
- 49:49Speaker 1: all that. You can't go take any of this stuff
- 49:54Speaker 1: just to your local pawn shop.
- 49:55Speaker 2: I mean, you can't pawn a Rolex.
- 49:58Speaker 4: Right.
- 49:58Speaker 1: What do you give me? What do you give me
- 50:00Speaker 1: for the crowd? These crowd jewels.
- 50:03Speaker 2: These have been sitting in the loop for the last
- 50:05Speaker 2: 300 years.
- 50:06Speaker 3: Yeah. I got it.
- 50:08Speaker 1: I got it for my birthday. But did you see
- 50:12Speaker 1: that they rolled out of there and, like, some tiara with, like,
- 50:15Speaker 1: thousands of diamonds and pearls just, like, fell out.
- 50:17Speaker 2: Of the bag?
- 50:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 50:19Speaker 2: It was... I mean, it was... I have to admit,
- 50:23Speaker 2: I wouldn't say I'm pro this sort of crime. I
- 50:26Speaker 2: am very pro people who can get away with... Like,
- 50:29Speaker 2: people eluding the cops... It's pretty cool.
- 50:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 50:33Speaker 1: I will say, a friend of mine said it to me,
- 50:35Speaker 1: and she was like, this is so dope. And I
- 50:37Speaker 1: was like, wow, that's an interesting term to use. But,
- 50:40Speaker 1: you know, once you start putting it in these terms,
- 50:42Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, I see what you're saying. I will
- 50:44Speaker 1: also make this point. As a Texan, I saw another
- 50:49Speaker 1: story that in Virginia, some people pulled up to these folks'
- 50:53Speaker 1: house with, like, Halloween masks and told them to come outside, like,
- 50:57Speaker 1: just threatening, you know, threatening. And they said the people
- 50:59Speaker 1: are still at large or whatever it is. And this
- 51:01Speaker 1: crime with the Louvre and that one right there, my
- 51:05Speaker 1: Texas brain can't understand it because guns.
- 51:10Speaker 2: Right.
- 51:10Speaker 1: Like because the plan.
- 51:11Speaker 2: In Louisiana is like that, too.
- 51:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 51:14Speaker 1: Yeah. Like I did, baby.
- 51:15Speaker 2: I did.
- 51:16Speaker 1: Is it a house? So the thing in France is
- 51:18Speaker 1: that their plan, if you get robbed, is just you
- 51:20Speaker 1: can have stuff.
- 51:22Speaker 4: Right.
- 51:22Speaker 1: Just as long as we all make it out of here.
- 51:24Speaker 1: That thing that people ran in Virginia, you're not doing
- 51:27Speaker 1: that in nobody's house in Texas because you're going to
- 51:29Speaker 1: get some, you're going to have buckshot in your chest. Like,
- 51:32Speaker 1: I am floored that you can take that much stuff
- 51:35Speaker 1: and I don't care if it took them seven minutes
- 51:37Speaker 1: or not. Somebody would have been waiting there to blow
- 51:39Speaker 1: your ass away if you had tried this at the
- 51:42Speaker 1: Houston Museum of Art. Bet that.
- 51:46Speaker 2: All right, Bo. Mick, Voicemail lines open, a lot of
- 51:55Speaker 2: great ones. Here's our first.
- 51:57Speaker 5: Hey, Bo, this is Darius Collins from Georgia.
- 51:59Speaker 3: And I had a question for you.
- 52:00Speaker 5: So I know Rasheed Wallace played in the NBA all
- 52:03Speaker 5: those years and Trey Owens played in the NFL all
- 52:06Speaker 5: those years. I'm a little younger, but I just remember
- 52:09Speaker 5: people really didn't like Trey Owens because of his off-the-field antics.
- 52:13Speaker 5: But people love Rasheed Wallace despite his on-the-field antics. So
- 52:17Speaker 5: my question is, how can she, who used to come unglued,
- 52:21Speaker 5: on the court, and sometimes couldn't finish the game because
- 52:23Speaker 5: of all those technical fouls. He was so loved, whereas T.O.
- 52:27Speaker 5: 's shenanigans happened on the sideline and not on the
- 52:30Speaker 5: field and didn't cause his team to end the game.
- 52:32Speaker 5: I just don't understand how she was loved and he
- 52:35Speaker 5: would lose it in the game when he knows the
- 52:37Speaker 5: team would need him, whereas T.O. was just losing on
- 52:39Speaker 5: the sideline. I just never understood why one is hate
- 52:42Speaker 5: and one is love.
- 52:42Speaker 4: Thanks, man.
- 52:45Speaker 1: I got to be honest with you, Darius. The only
- 52:48Speaker 1: explanation I got for you is sheed is sheed. And
- 52:51Speaker 1: T-O is T-O.
- 52:54Speaker 2: You can maybe do football and basketball is a little different,
- 52:56Speaker 2: but that's, that's, that's, that's the crux of it.
- 52:59Speaker 1: Some people, some people could get away with some things.
- 53:02Speaker 1: Some people can't get away. For example, Why don't you
- 53:05Speaker 1: go wear that stuff that Cam Newton be wearing and
- 53:08Speaker 1: go outside and see if you can pull a bad one. Oh,
- 53:10Speaker 1: but you can't. What's the difference between me and Cam Newton?
- 53:14Speaker 1: There you go. You just said it right there. That's, that's,
- 53:16Speaker 1: that's all it is. Sheed, Sheed is really endearing though.
- 53:19Speaker 1: It has always been that way, but it's, those of
- 53:22Speaker 1: us who love Sheed, we started loving Sheed when he
- 53:24Speaker 1: first got into school. Also Sheed, like Sheed got ejected
- 53:28Speaker 1: from his first preseason game for fighting. Like it's, it's
- 53:32Speaker 1: all over the place with Sheed. Also, The T.O. thing,
- 53:38Speaker 1: and I'm glad you pointed out that you were younger
- 53:40Speaker 1: because he did cost his team some games. He got
- 53:44Speaker 1: suspended that whole year with the Eagles, for example.
- 53:49Speaker 2: But he also won a Super Bowl by himself on
- 53:51Speaker 2: one leg.
- 53:52Speaker 1: He did.
- 53:53Speaker 2: Right.
- 53:55Speaker 1: Let's not leave that out. But the bottom line is,
- 53:58Speaker 1: People like Sheed in ways that they don't like T.O. Now,
- 54:01Speaker 1: to be clear, there are a lot of people who
- 54:03Speaker 1: really like T.O. The issue with T.O. is not that
- 54:05Speaker 1: everybody doesn't like T.O. Because if everybody didn't like T.O.,
- 54:07Speaker 1: it'd be easier to deal with. Problem is, a lot
- 54:10Speaker 1: of people love T.O. And then the other people really
- 54:13Speaker 1: don't like T.O., right? But, yeah, no, it's just the
- 54:18Speaker 1: answer to your question is that life ain't fair.
- 54:20Speaker 2: It be like that sometimes.
- 54:22Speaker 3: Yep.
- 54:22Speaker 2: All right, here's our next one. Hey, Bomani.
- 54:26Speaker 4: My name's Robbie. I'm calling you from the kind of
- 54:29Speaker 4: Buffalo area. Long-time fan from back in your Around the
- 54:33Speaker 4: Horn days and glad to be listening to your pod
- 54:35Speaker 4: more frequently. I was really sad about the passing of D'Angelo,
- 54:39Speaker 4: so I was curious to hear a little bit from
- 54:42Speaker 4: you about D'Angelo, any fandom you may have. D'Angelo is
- 54:48Speaker 4: an artist who really actually got me into Prince in
- 54:51Speaker 4: a sort of retroactive way. And from interviews that I've
- 54:54Speaker 4: listened to, you know, kind of positioned himself in the
- 54:56Speaker 4: lineage of, you know, Prince, Fly, James Brown, you know,
- 55:00Speaker 4: kind of working it back that way. So curious what
- 55:02Speaker 4: you think about D'Angelo within that lineage and curious if
- 55:06Speaker 4: you could speak to, you know, any artists, maybe more
- 55:10Speaker 4: contemporary artists you think may be continuing, continuing in that
- 55:15Speaker 4: maybe lineage of music and culture. So thanks, Bomani. Thanks
- 55:19Speaker 4: for the reflection. Thanks for the show.
- 55:20Speaker 1: Appreciate you.
- 55:21Speaker 3: All right. Nope.
- 55:22Speaker 1: No problem, man. I don't really have the current artist
- 55:25Speaker 1: to point to. And we got a video also up
- 55:27Speaker 1: on YouTube that you can check out where we talked
- 55:29Speaker 1: about D'Angelo right after he passed. In fact, I was
- 55:31Speaker 1: listening to Brown Sugar a little bit today before we
- 55:36Speaker 1: jumped on. And I've thought more and more about it.
- 55:43Speaker 1: And I'm still struck by the effect that he had
- 55:47Speaker 1: on other great musicians.
- 55:50Speaker 4: Right?
- 55:50Speaker 1: Like, it's one thing for those.
- 55:54Speaker 1: I think I underestimate how, like, kind of almost, I
- 56:00Speaker 1: don't know if revolutionary is the right way to put it,
- 56:02Speaker 1: but when he hit it in 95, nothing really sounded
- 56:04Speaker 1: like that. Like, you could go listen to the Tony, Tony, Tony,
- 56:07Speaker 1: Sons of Soul album, I think, and kind of start
- 56:09Speaker 1: walking your way into this general direction, but nothing sounded
- 56:13Speaker 1: like Brown Sugar. And the part that I didn't give
- 56:16Speaker 1: enough credit to until I was talking to my man
- 56:18Speaker 1: DeJuan about this is, I told the story about, like,
- 56:22Speaker 1: the ASR 10 story, where Pepsi found out that D'Angelo
- 56:26Speaker 1: recorded Brown Sugar on the ASR-10, which Pimp C had
- 56:29Speaker 1: also used, and he was just like, I don't know
- 56:32Speaker 1: nothing about using this machine if he did his album
- 56:35Speaker 1: on that. I need to go look at the book.
- 56:37Speaker 1: But the thing about the ASR-10 that made it interesting
- 56:40Speaker 1: is that D'Angelo was in there programming drums. Like he
- 56:44Speaker 1: was making rap tracks. Like when you go listen to it,
- 56:46Speaker 1: that is the, like, it's a continuation of that Mary J.
- 56:48Speaker 3: Blige.
- 56:49Speaker 1: But it's like, Oh no, you are pounding out these
- 56:51Speaker 1: drums and somebody could really rap over a lot of
- 56:55Speaker 1: these beats. Like you're really doing that then with a
- 56:58Speaker 1: really sophisticated kind of style of playing keys, but nothing
- 57:00Speaker 1: is ever super showy in the instrumentals and all of
- 57:03Speaker 1: this stuff. And it just gets back again to kind
- 57:05Speaker 1: of what we talked about in the last question. He's
- 57:07Speaker 1: that guy. And it just shown him being that guy
- 57:10Speaker 1: in every song and everything that he did felt so
- 57:14Speaker 1: natural and easy. And I think that's the part that
- 57:17Speaker 1: gets me. People miss the mark all the time on songs.
- 57:20Speaker 1: Even songs that aren't necessarily my favorite from him, because,
- 57:23Speaker 1: you know, D'Angelo got, hey, speak up, can't understand you, right?
- 57:29Speaker 1: It still all just felt like it just came out
- 57:31Speaker 1: of him so purely when it did. And I think
- 57:35Speaker 1: the more I think about it, that's the most irreplaceable
- 57:37Speaker 1: quality with him. Like, even Prince. Prince got a whole
- 57:39Speaker 1: lot of stuff that kind of missed a mark, right? D'Angelo,
- 57:43Speaker 1: maybe there's this super quality control of only putting out
- 57:45Speaker 1: three albums in 30 years, but it never felt like
- 57:49Speaker 1: he missed a mark, even if it wasn't your favorite.
- 57:52Speaker 2: All right, Bo, here's our last one.
- 57:54Speaker 3: Hey, Bomani, it's your boy JT in Las Vegas. Just
- 57:57Speaker 3: wanted to ask, I've heard you say a bunch of
- 57:59Speaker 3: times today, that B.O.B. by OutKast is the greatest single
- 58:03Speaker 3: and greatest song of the 21st century. And I was
- 58:06Speaker 3: just wondering if you could kind of touch on what
- 58:09Speaker 3: it is that makes that song so incredible and just
- 58:13Speaker 3: the best thing ever. Because that song knocks, but what
- 58:16Speaker 3: is it that makes it the best?
- 58:19Speaker 2: Love the show, man.
- 58:20Speaker 3: Bye.
- 58:20Speaker 1: All right, appreciate it. So I'll walk you through this, right?
- 58:23Speaker 1: So the summer of 2000, which was, those of you
- 58:26Speaker 1: who know me, A very difficult time in my life.
- 58:29Speaker 1: My best friend in college died in April of that year.
- 58:33Speaker 1: I'm 19 years old when this happens. This is my
- 58:35Speaker 1: junior year. I go to his funeral. I come back
- 58:39Speaker 1: to the dorm and I expected to finish out the semester. No.
- 58:43Speaker 1: Packed up my stuff. I went to my parents' house, right?
- 58:45Speaker 1: I was like, I don't know what I'm going to do.
- 58:46Speaker 1: That's when I started doing all the writing and media
- 58:48Speaker 1: stuff because I needed something to keep myself sane. So anyway,
- 58:52Speaker 1: That summer, somebody tells me it's his new OutKast song.
- 58:54Speaker 1: You got to check it out. And I say, OK, cool.
- 58:56Speaker 1: So my dad was not home that summer for the
- 59:01Speaker 1: most part. He was working some job in D.C. So
- 59:03Speaker 1: I had to house to myself. And this was the
- 59:05Speaker 1: summer that Napster appeared. But we had no high speed Internet.
- 59:09Speaker 1: And you would go out. go on dial up and
- 59:11Speaker 1: just try to like download songs right and it could
- 59:13Speaker 1: take forever and so i found out about this outcast
- 59:15Speaker 1: song and i felt like it took me a whole
- 59:17Speaker 1: day to download it and i remember the first time
- 59:18Speaker 1: i listened to it i'd never heard anything that sounded
- 59:20Speaker 1: like it and i spent three whole days listening to
- 59:23Speaker 1: it in the first two days i'm still not getting
- 59:26Speaker 1: it and the third day Everything registered. And it was like, oh,
- 59:29Speaker 1: this is mind blowing. And so what it is for
- 59:32Speaker 1: me that makes that song so incredible is that it
- 59:36Speaker 1: comes out in the year 2000. So at this point,
- 59:40Speaker 1: we're really working with, I guess, a little bit short
- 59:43Speaker 1: of 30 years. But, you know, for most people's consciousness,
- 59:46Speaker 1: 20 years of rap music.
- 59:47Speaker 3: Right.
- 59:50Speaker 1: And it felt like every style of rap, every movement
- 59:54Speaker 1: of rap that had emerged up until that point was
- 59:58Speaker 1: included in that song. While also considering a point that
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: Chuck D made in a book that I read once
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: that I thought was interesting about rap, where he's like,
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: the thing about rap is that rap is music that
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: is made from music. So then we're borrowing from so
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: many other things. You're borrowing from rock. You're borrowing from
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: gospel music. And not like, oh, it's a sprinkle here,
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: it's a sprinkle there. It's all right there explicitly in
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: your face. And it just felt like this big jumble
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: of everything together that somehow managed to be like full
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: on cohesive, right? The energy is unstoppable in it. It's
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: whatever you want a rap song to be, B.O.B. in
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: some part is going to be that at every single term.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: It's the greatest group in the history of rap showing
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: you every single thing that they could do. and a
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: song that literally nobody else could have done, right? So
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: for me, if you ask anybody, what is it that
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: they love about hip hop? People who truly love it.
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: What is it that you love about hip hop? Get
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: what their answer is. And no matter what that answer is,
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: I guarantee you, you will find a piece of that
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: in B.O.B. Jermaine Dupri makes the point about Atlanta rap,
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: that every song from Atlanta got a little Planet Rock
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: in it. He's like, that is the foundational building block.
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: And when you know that, it explains a lot about
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: how Atlanta rap goes. Atlanta is a hip-hop city in
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: a way that not all cities in the South are.
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: New Orleans is a hip-hop city in a way that
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: not all cities in the South are. Houston, for example, Houston,
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: a rap city. It found its way there, but I
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: don't find that hip-hop is, it ain't in the bones
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: of the place and in the people of the time
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: in the same way. It just don't feel that way
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: to me. But Atlanta is. And so when you hear
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: me say that, you hear that foundational piece of Planet Rock,
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: like really in the beginning, you hear that. And then
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: it broadens out into everything else that ever seemed possible
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: at the time. And it's 25 years later. You still
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: ain't caught up to it. We still ain't. But yeah.
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, thanks so much for joining us here
