Latest / Arguing Ever After / 1 - Old Fashioned Blueberry Cake Donuts (Are they good or not?)
Transcript
- 0:15Welcome to Arguing Ever After. My name is Luke and my wife is
- 0:19Amber. Hello.
- 0:21We are the Lord and Lady who lock.
- 0:22Horns, the counting Countess of contention.
- 0:26The Duke and Duchess of Disagreement.
- 0:29And the king and queen of quarrels.
- 0:33We have been together since high school in the 1900s, and we've
- 0:37been married for over 20 years. We've argued about practically
- 0:40everything, and yet still, somehow, we're able to stay
- 0:43together happily. We have a teenage daughter who
- 0:47isn't terrible. In fact, she's pretty great, and
- 0:50most of our families still talk to us.
- 0:52All in all, pretty darn good. Every day, all over the world,
- 0:56couples are fighting battles based on molehills that don't
- 0:59matter and sometimes mountains that send spouses to sleep on
- 1:03couches and keep the chocolate companies and facial tissue
- 1:06giants in business. In this entertainment only
- 1:09podcast, we will bicker about all things big and small and the
- 1:13audience gets the final say of who the winner is.
- 1:17We do not claim to be a relationship expert by any
- 1:21means, but if we can have meaningless arguments and still
- 1:24come out of them together, why not give it a listen?
- 1:28We will quarrel about topics which are frequently submitted
- 1:31by our listeners, so if you have a topic you want us non
- 1:33professionals to cross swords on for a preview of how it could go
- 1:37down in your own relationship, please share it with us.
- 1:41Perhaps this completely unscientific method of letting
- 1:45the masses decide who is right can settle your fight too,
- 1:48before you even have it. You can submit your topic ideas
- 1:53to us at arguingeverafter@gmail.com.
- 1:57Today we are going to be talking about Should We Start a Podcast?
- 2:05And Donuts. And Donuts, absolutely, and
- 2:09specifically blueberry cake Donuts, but we'll get back to
- 2:12that a little bit later. So Luke and I have been talking
- 2:17for years about having our own podcast to argue in front of the
- 2:22world 'cause you know, why not? It's not like we don't already
- 2:25do it. But let's let's see how it goes.
- 2:28Does anyone actually want to listen to us?
- 2:32And who's really more right? More often than not, I think
- 2:37it's me. We also thought that if we made
- 2:44a podcast and enough people thought that it was
- 2:47entertaining, maybe one day we could get rich and famous.
- 2:51But who knows, Probably not. We'll probably just still be
- 2:54here in our lovely basement arguing on our daughter's Girl
- 2:58Scout one trapezoid tripod thing with the light on it.
- 3:06These fancy youngins. So why are we starting a
- 3:10podcast? That's the initial discussion.
- 3:15I love listening to podcasts. I listen to all kinds of
- 3:18podcasts. Well, I listen to two kinds of
- 3:21podcasts. The comedy podcasts are, there's
- 3:24a lot of great ones out there. I also really love Imagine It
- 3:30true crime podcasts. I can listen to them all day
- 3:35while working. Luke also listens to podcasts.
- 3:38I drive a lot to and from work. I have quite a long commute, so
- 3:42I listen to a bunch of different podcasts.
- 3:45I've listened to a lot that I listened to once, as one does
- 3:48when they're not that great. But the ones that have stuck
- 3:51with me, a lot of them are either business or personal
- 3:56growth related. There's some comedy ones that I
- 3:59listen to pretty regularly, some philosophy and religion ones
- 4:03that I listen to pretty regularly because I like to stay
- 4:06interested in things that are a little bit different than your
- 4:10average. Not quite like a true crime
- 4:13murder podcast. And we both will frequently tell
- 4:18the other that they should listen to the podcast that we're
- 4:20consuming. And I can honestly say I've
- 4:25never listened to any of your recommendations, not a single
- 4:31one. They sound really like.
- 4:32I've tried all of the terrible podcasts you've recommended,
- 4:37sometimes even more than one episode, and it just doesn't
- 4:40last. That's OK.
- 4:42That's OK. Different strokes for different
- 4:43folks. Not really.
- 4:45Mine are better, but I will see that.
- 4:50We are not big on research, but I think all of our listening
- 4:54probably counts, right. I mean we've hours upon hours of
- 4:58podcast consumption. So it just seemed to me given
- 5:04that we can talk for hours upon hours that we should do this.
- 5:09We did have some people who thought that maybe this wasn't a
- 5:14great idea for a healthy relationship.
- 5:19They might be right. They might be wrong.
- 5:21We'll find out. We even have a friend who's like
- 5:24a family therapist and we talked about discussing this with him
- 5:28before we did this and we said it's not really going to matter
- 5:31what he says, so we're going to not do that.
- 5:37But of course, like everything you know, you certainly have
- 5:40your your concerns about what could happen.
- 5:44But I mean, we have been together forever and had some
- 5:47ginormous fights, fights that have kept us up way too many
- 5:52hours. And I mean, it's never really
- 5:57about anything that truly matters in the long run.
- 6:01And the most important thing I think that we've been able to
- 6:03take from our 25 plus years in a relationship is that we can make
- 6:11it through any argument, even if it's a little one for
- 6:14entertainment or a big one that we both care about.
- 6:17We're able to find common ground when we can, and to know when
- 6:20it's time to just not keep going.
- 6:23Yeah. Because nobody's changing,
- 6:25nobody else's mind, so we might as well stop.
- 6:29We're both very stubborn and. For the good of the Kingdom.
- 6:32Yes, for the good of the Kingdom.
- 6:34For the good of the Kingdom. Well, I mean, and it's sort of
- 6:38interesting timing to. He had said, our daughter's in
- 6:43Girl Scouts. Right now she's at Girl Scout
- 6:46camp. So it's kind of like a preview
- 6:50of empty nesting. I don't know.
- 6:53OK, Just. I didn't say that at all.
- 6:56But we're bored. We're so used to having our
- 7:01schedules work around her that, you know, it's just, it's like,
- 7:05cool, we have us time now what do we do?
- 7:07Argue. Argue, argue.
- 7:11Yes, yes, we're very experts, very big experts in the arguing
- 7:17concept. So this.
- 7:21Yeah. So I, when we were, we were
- 7:27recently on a road trip and the store that I went to, Oh, by the
- 7:32way, if you're on a road trip, you must have Rd. food.
- 7:36I think everybody agrees that if you're driving for longer than
- 7:41an hour, you need to have some snacks.
- 7:44We were actually going far away. And so, and you know, with
- 7:49several hours, we're spending a night somewhere and, you know,
- 7:54they didn't have breakfast items.
- 7:55So I went to the grocery store and at the grocery store, they
- 7:59actually were out of freaking Donuts.
- 8:01How any grocery store can be out of Donuts.
- 8:03Oh, by the way, that's really important to have Donuts in the
- 8:06morning on vacation. That's like one of our life
- 8:09hacks. Donuts on vacation in the
- 8:12morning? Keeping it healthy.
- 8:14Yes, yes. And so, but the grocery store,
- 8:17like they said their bakery folks like they were having
- 8:20staffing issues with the bakery, which I don't even understand
- 8:24why you would exist if you don't have a bakery if you're a
- 8:26grocery store. But so then I had to do what
- 8:30many have done. I had to go to the gas station
- 8:35where I knew that they would have Donuts and obviously
- 8:40there's donut shops but like there's not that many good
- 8:44options around by us or they're open limited hours and I wanted
- 8:48what I wanted when I wanted it. So gas stations are open 24/7.
- 8:53So I had picked up a box of Donuts which sounded delicious.
- 9:01These were old fashioned blueberry cake Donuts, blueberry
- 9:08flavored doughnuts with that nice like crispy.
- 9:13What is that sugar coating? And I was super excited about it
- 9:16and they're delicious. I picked him up some kind of
- 9:20like, I don't know, other grocery, I think grocery store.
- 9:24I don't know, this other doughnut with some stuff on top.
- 9:27And I really wanted, I mean, I wanted the doughnuts for myself.
- 9:31Let's be honest. That's why I bought them.
- 9:35And then Luke had his opinion about the Donuts and felt the
- 9:41need to share his opinions about the Donuts with me.
- 9:46I'm a sharer. Which were kind of like Yuking
- 9:50my and when we were talking about that when he was so mad
- 9:55about the Donuts, I was like, Luke, you need to try these
- 9:58Donuts. You don't know if you're going
- 10:00to like them now you're how old? 43 and 11 months and a week and
- 10:08a half. Oh.
- 10:09My God, I don't even know if that's true, but I'll trust you.
- 10:11Pretty Dang close. I'll be 44 in like 2 1/2 weeks.
- 10:14And you've had some Donuts. I have had a lot of Donuts.
- 10:16But some. An expert.
- 10:18Somehow I felt. That Is there a word for donut
- 10:21connoisseur? Donut to sewer?
- 10:23Sure. Could be, could be.
- 10:27I felt that you needed to try a donut that you were sure without
- 10:31trying that exact donut would not like.
- 10:35Is it my turn yet? Because those doughnuts are
- 10:38garbage. I can wait.
- 10:42I'm. Going to tell you they are
- 10:44delicious with the right amount of sugar and a nice little
- 10:50blueberry flavor. Like a blueberry muffin in cake
- 10:53doughnut form. And I'm not a cake doughnut
- 10:55person, but the old fashioned doughnuts have the little wedges
- 11:00that collects all that icing so that it's a nice sweet and
- 11:05fruity breakfast tree. Listen, first of all, cake
- 11:13doughnuts period are inferior in almost every way to all other
- 11:24doughnuts because they're like drier and they're like thicker
- 11:29and they don't have that same like puffy kind of magic of most
- 11:34other doughnuts. They're not filled with
- 11:37anything. They're not capable of handling
- 11:41the correct amount of icing or chocolate glaze.
- 11:45If you like that kind of thing, it's.
- 11:46Delicious. All you get is this dense, cakey
- 11:53thing that's like a doughnut that should have been either
- 11:57like a muffin or a cake, and it's just not good.
- 12:01And then they added blueberry flavoring maybe 'cause it wasn't
- 12:06blueberry, it was like, it would be like the blueberry that you
- 12:10get in the icy or something. Like it's a you could taste how
- 12:15fake the sugar was. Whoa.
- 12:17Whoa. Not I, I mean I would put it at
- 12:19like blueberry cereal flavoring. Good example, yeah.
- 12:24Not icy. Well, we're gonna have another
- 12:26episode about blueberry cereal and ice.
- 12:28Absolutely 'cause. You're wrong about those too,
- 12:32but specific to these doughnuts, they were disgusting.
- 12:40My opinion was corroborated by a teenager, our child, who tried
- 12:47it and also said they were not worth the eating.
- 12:52OK, OK, I'm gonna hold you one moment to that she said the
- 12:57texture of the doughnut was amazing.
- 13:03And I agree with you on cake doughnuts as a whole theory.
- 13:07I'm not a cake doughnut person. Maybe cake doughnut hole, but
- 13:11not a whole cake doughnut. These are old fashioned cake
- 13:15doughnuts. It's different.
- 13:17There's like kind of almost like little nooks and crannies for
- 13:20these things. Oh my God you're right, cake
- 13:22doughnuts are better. I just remembered the
- 13:25categories. OK, so old.
- 13:28Fashioned old new Oh my God, I can't believe you're.
- 13:32Going there, hold your horse. They're both inferior.
- 13:35Both inferior to a like a classic glazed raised as an
- 13:41example. Also known as a yeast doughnut.
- 13:44Fine, yeah, 'cause that's better.
- 13:47But the cake ones are the ones that they usually have, like the
- 13:50cinnamon sugar around them or something, right?
- 13:52And they're more rounded. Yes, they're more rounded.
- 13:55Still not good, but better than I cannot like.
- 14:00The old fashioned is a notch below the cake.
- 14:04No, yes. Cause the cake doughnut is more
- 14:08like a doughnut hole. And this abomination that you
- 14:11got at the gas station, it's, if it's old fashioned, you know
- 14:16what it should have been left wherever it came from.
- 14:20OK, OK, OK, OK, OK, so here's like you're so I cannot believe
- 14:25you were on like cake doughnut over anything old fashioned
- 14:28doughnuts and cake doughnuts very different old fashioned
- 14:32doughnuts. If you put those things in the
- 14:35refrigerator and let it sit for like an hour to maybe up to
- 14:39overnight and eat it cold and you get that cold icing.
- 14:45What that is delicious. That is so delicious.
- 14:48I mean, I think regular cake Donuts is just a cake missing
- 14:53frosting. So I don't I'm I'm with you on
- 14:59race Donuts. Our best that that was not our
- 15:02option on our road trip. That's fine.
- 15:06We had either the cake donut that I bought you, which I've
- 15:10real I now realize is that you prefer actual cake doughnuts
- 15:15which is fresh. Please raise or fill doughnuts.
- 15:19They got OK or we're living in a world where there is no yeast
- 15:24made doughnuts. That's not option.
- 15:27Time at the gas station. Yes, actually.
- 15:30Purposes of our discussion today that's.
- 15:34Not fair. I'm I will totally agree with
- 15:38you. I mean Voodoo Donuts if you're
- 15:40out there and want to send us a free dozen.
- 15:44Hitusupandarguingeverafter@gmail.com. We would love it.
- 15:49We love it. And I'll just tell everybody, if
- 15:52you're in the area of a Voodoo Donut, you should totally get
- 15:55one. But regardless, we aren't
- 15:59talking about that world. Those are for us, like luxury
- 16:03Donuts, vacation Donuts. Sure.
- 16:05You know I'm talking about real world.
- 16:09This is all you get. Donuts.
- 16:11You're trying to make the case that old fashioned cake Donuts
- 16:17are OK. They are.
- 16:20They're good. Like they are a good valid
- 16:23choice for a sweet morning treat in a box.
- 16:27Pre sold the way it is. You know you're trusting the
- 16:30preservatives as they sit. Absolutely, absolutely yes.
- 16:36I mean, other things I would take from the gas station.
- 16:38If we're narrowing the scope of the argument to the gas station,
- 16:41there's a lot, and none of them are old fashioned cake Donuts.
- 16:44For breakfast, what would you take?
- 16:47You have the rule #1 no refrigeration.
- 16:50Oh, I was going to say no yogurt.
- 16:52I knew. You're going to go there?
- 16:53No, no refrigeration whatsoever. It's not an option.
- 16:58It is what sits in your hot dank car for like 6 hours on the road
- 17:03before it can find anything. So it needs to be able to
- 17:07withstand that. So it must must have some kind
- 17:09of preservative and care packaging, not just a bag.
- 17:15What are my other choices? That's what I'm asking you.
- 17:18It sounds like I found them the best.
- 17:21Solution. Do they got those flat crunchy
- 17:23things? What flight?
- 17:25What are you talking about at the gas station?
- 17:27No, they don't have that. A crispy.
- 17:29Yeah. No, that's not the gas station.
- 17:32I would have had that. What about fill Donuts?
- 17:35That's OK, That's not an option at the gas station.
- 17:39Take. A shortcut.
- 17:40You didn't go to the donut section, you just went to the
- 17:42checkout line, didn't you? It's right there at the thing.
- 17:45Oh my coffee box at the convenience.
- 17:49Portion 'cause you know that they actually have a donut
- 17:52section. I mean, I know, but that's.
- 17:54So and they probably would have had like a cream filled.
- 17:56I didn't look at it. What do they call that like a
- 17:58Boston cream That's also donut. They probably would have had
- 18:01glaze raised even they probably would have had Oh, so you just
- 18:05skipped the correct area, went right to the you were like, oh,
- 18:08damn, check out. I can buy cheese sticks and
- 18:11Donuts. That's my choices.
- 18:16Also it was 8 Donuts for $2.99. I mean, that's a fine price.
- 18:22That's a great price. If I were to walk over to those
- 18:24expensive cases, it would have been at least $1.50 per.
- 18:28There's a reason they're 299. They're good.
- 18:32They're they have their own special place.
- 18:34And I mean, I'm just saying they're so.
- 18:37They have their own special place in your mouth, yes.
- 18:40Not in mine. Yes.
- 18:41Oh, they're so good. They're so good.
- 18:45I wouldn't eat them every day. I couldn't eat them every day.
- 18:48But like, as a special treat, I'm telling you, old fashioned
- 18:55Donuts are the way to go. But you like all of them old
- 18:58fashioned one, the ones that are like just the sugar glaze and
- 19:00have like the yeah, the fudge stripes like.
- 19:03The I thought the but I thought the special abomination for you
- 19:08and our daughter was that it was blueberry flavored.
- 19:13I mean if it had maybe blueberries in it it.
- 19:16Might have it. I didn't see any.
- 19:19It was blue colored on the inside.
- 19:21It was real blue. I mean, purple blue, like a
- 19:24blueberry, like like blueberry yogurt.
- 19:26That's what it's like. It's like blueberry yogurt.
- 19:28That's not the same. And you said you would take
- 19:30yogurt. Blueberry yogurt, therefore.
- 19:34I mean, I, I think there could be some essence of blueberry,
- 19:37essence of blueberry. Now we're back to scented water.
- 19:40That's going to be. Another episode that will
- 19:42totally be another episode as. I like me some scented water.
- 19:46Absolutely, Absolutely. Listen, I think that the real
- 19:53truth is, and everybody out here is going to agree with me, that
- 19:58old fashioned cake doughnuts. Are at the bottom of the food
- 20:02chain of the donut hierarchy, period.
- 20:07Because nobody's out here going no, oh, you know what?
- 20:10I like to buy the cheapest Donuts on planet Earth.
- 20:13Nobody, nobody wants that. They want to go to the donut
- 20:17section and get those glaze rays.
- 20:19I wanted to go to the donut section.
- 20:22Not bad enough. Different place, but OK.
- 20:24OK, the bottom is so far from where it is, I'm going to say
- 20:28the bottom of the doughnut pile for me.
- 20:33Again, donut holes are in a whole another category, true.
- 20:37Are those? Also, mini Donuts are delicious.
- 20:40I'm not talking about those either.
- 20:42I'm talking about the cinnamon sugar.
- 20:45No, that's not bottom. I'm going powder Donuts, Donuts,
- 20:52Donuts. Oh, now you're bringing.
- 20:53Brandy, I'm sorry, I. Apologize.
- 20:55Sorry we. Still eat your Donuts?
- 20:57I just want to eat for that. I will eat them if you sponsor
- 21:00us. I would actually I would eat
- 21:02those. I would instead of the old
- 21:04fashioned. The chocolate.
- 21:08The ones where the. Like.
- 21:11Stings your mouth a little on the inside.
- 21:13You're like, why does it hurt on the inside of my mouth?
- 21:16I would rather I would eat a. Little 8 sleeve of those before
- 21:23I would eat. That's terrible.
- 21:26No, no, no, no, no. That's like hard up.
- 21:30I'm in high school and it's in the vending machine.
- 21:34Yes. And that's what that is.
- 21:36That's I'm in for that sign me. Oh, this is.
- 21:41So that's the box for you. Oh.
- 21:45You are good, don't Donuts. Why I'm?
- 21:50Sorry, Donuts. You're bringing it up again.
- 21:52I don't know if that's little Susie or whatever it is, but we
- 21:56Susie, we got love for all the brands.
- 22:00She doesn't. I will retract it if you sponsor
- 22:03us though, I promise. Now you got threats.
- 22:05I know we got real. I will absolutely, but I I'll
- 22:08retract the name. But your Donuts is still trash.
- 22:11We could edit it out. I think that's the thing.
- 22:14Later on podcast. But not right now.
- 22:15We're keeping it. OK, we're keeping.
- 22:17It they didn't pay us. That's true.
- 22:20That's true. I can trash anyone.
- 22:23If we ever do commercials, I would love to do commercial
- 22:25voices. That sounds exciting.
- 22:27Yeah, well, I don't know that anyone really wants to hear my
- 22:31voice on a commercial, but I mean, if you pay me, I'll be
- 22:35willing. So.
- 22:35OK, so the the real question is are old fashioned Donuts good?
- 22:44And the real answer is. No.
- 22:46Absolutely, without a doubt. So what's?
- 22:55It feel like to be wrong. I don't know.
- 23:00I'm going to have to. We're going.
- 23:01To have to ask them ask. You no idea what it feels like
- 23:07to be wrong because I'm right. No one is going to take the
- 23:15sleeve of especially those chocolate coated doughnuts.
- 23:21Those ones, you dip them in a little cup of coffee.
- 23:24Oh my God. Boom, got yourself a little
- 23:27recipe for magic. Well, a little treat for all of
- 23:32you day ones. Oh.
- 23:35And what might we have? Day twos, that's what we're.
- 23:37Hoping that's. Right.
- 23:39Is that we know that sometimes we do get a little heated.
- 23:44That's true. And we thought we should have
- 23:48some kind of a, a thing to tell the other person, you know, like
- 23:52a what do they call it? What is the word?
- 23:54Safe word. A safe word.
- 23:56And so when Luke and I had kind of had a little spat about
- 24:01Donuts, I said maybe blueberry Donuts can be our safe word.
- 24:06So if you're ever hear us in the future, maybe mention or refer
- 24:12something like it, you know, just know that we have our own
- 24:15boundaries too, and that's OK. It's right.
- 24:18You know, I think it's right. And sometimes I need to tell you
- 24:22to shut up with a blueberry doughnut.
- 24:25Blueberry. Don't do the.
- 24:28Same thing. That we know it's time to pivot
- 24:34into another category so. Good.
- 24:38Yeah, yeah. So I hope that that was a nice
- 24:43little preview for what is going to come.
- 24:47We'll get better. I mean, I don't think she won't
- 24:49get better at arguing, but like maybe the podcast will get a
- 24:53little cleaner. We'll see.
- 24:55Maybe we're. At a try, we're going to try.
- 24:57I mean, we don't. Know.
- 24:59Maybe we'll let, maybe less. I don't know.
- 25:00Do we swear? I don't even know.
- 25:02I'm gonna say anyone who has kids, I apologize, but if you
- 25:07have kids and you know us, 'cause I'm thinking that's some
- 25:10of the first people who listen. That's probably true.
- 25:12You already knew to not let your kids listen first.
- 25:15That's cause, yeah. We say something.
- 25:21We, I mean we might say, I don't know if we get really that
- 25:24inappropriate in general, but we do know some four letter words
- 25:29couple and they don't necessarily they don't they're
- 25:38not the main focus, but. They're going to come up.
- 25:41But I like a little seasoning on my on my arguments, so it's nice
- 25:47to have that for sure. So.
- 25:50So let's see. Well, that was the first debate
- 25:56officially. Now you guys get to vote, which
- 26:00is sort of the fun part for us. And for you on who was the
- 26:05winner of today's match. Was it me because it should be
- 26:09or was? It wasn't me because blueberry
- 26:13doughnuts old, sorry, old fashioned blueberry doughnuts
- 26:18are delicious. That's that's the reality.
- 26:23You should vote for me. So here's how you help this out.
- 26:26Keep it going according to the Internet you like.
- 26:31Subscribe and download and tell your friends and vote in the
- 26:38comments section about who won the debate.
- 26:42And then on the next episode we'll tell you up to votes.
- 26:44In this case, since it's our first podcast, hopefully it's
- 26:47more than one vote or three votes.
- 26:52It just has to be an odd number. I mean because if.
- 26:55It's a 2 odd number, then we go to like arm wrestling and I'm
- 27:00for sure going to win. Yes.
- 27:02But we might have to alternate with leg.
- 27:04Wrestling so. I've I.
- 27:06Would totally kick your. Butt work.
- 27:08Out work out. That is true, but the other way
- 27:13you can also vote is by sending us an e-mail along with topics
- 27:19at arguingeverafter@gmail.com. And definitely send more topics.
- 27:26We have a bunch, but we don't have enough to carry on a
- 27:28podcast for the years of success we hope to read from this.
- 27:32Yes. Thank you all for watching.
- 27:35Thank you.
