- 0:02Speaker 1: We've got Bob Nightingale from USA today and one of
- 0:05Speaker 1: our insiders here on FT joining us. Bob, good to
- 0:07Speaker 1: see you, and let's start at the top here. We
- 0:09Speaker 1: have two fresh signings, as you just pointed out, and
- 0:11Speaker 1: we showed the tweet, both for the same amount of
- 0:13Speaker 1: money at the same exact time. What do you think
- 0:15Speaker 1: of Luke Weaver to the Mets and Brad Keller to
- 0:18Speaker 1: the Phillies for two years and twenty two million dollars?
- 0:21Speaker 2: It was interesting the Yankees never made an offer on Weaver.
- 0:24Speaker 3: It's almost like, you know when Starnburner instead, I'm want
- 0:27Speaker 3: to keep this payroll around three hundred run or keep
- 0:30Speaker 3: to the word.
- 0:30Speaker 2: So maybe they're saving that money for Bellinger or somebody else.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Uh So, I was fascinated at the end of make
- 0:37Speaker 3: an offer, so I know that was I agree with
- 0:39Speaker 3: you guys, that was a great deal for a Weaver.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Keller has made himself a lot of money compared to
- 0:45Speaker 3: where he was. And you know, we talk about everybody
- 0:48Speaker 3: making eleven million. Member Kelly Jensen did that a few
- 0:51Speaker 3: days ago. Then everybody kind of followed him. Okay, if
- 0:53Speaker 3: Jans makes eleven, we'll make eleven. You know, we saw
- 0:57Speaker 3: that last week, of course at the winter meetings with
- 1:00Speaker 3: Alonzo and Schwarber, whether you know both basically making the
- 1:05Speaker 3: same amount of money.
- 1:07Speaker 4: Is the Luke Weaver not getting an offer from the
- 1:10Speaker 4: Yankees more news than what it is than you know,
- 1:14Speaker 4: not just the payroll, the need to get the payroll
- 1:17Speaker 4: under a certain spot, or is it the Yankees saw
- 1:22Speaker 4: maybe a little bit of a regression or something that
- 1:24Speaker 4: they were like, I don't know if this holds up
- 1:26Speaker 4: because they still need bullpen help.
- 1:30Speaker 3: They do, and obviously they didn't him bearing to anybody.
- 1:32Speaker 3: They know themer than the Mets. They get the medicals.
- 1:35Speaker 2: They saw you got.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Hurt last year, so we'll see. I mean, he had
- 1:39Speaker 3: an unbelievable bounce back. You know, I thought a few
- 1:42Speaker 3: years ago he was almost on the point of retiring,
- 1:44Speaker 3: just where his career was going. So he's really remained himself.
- 1:48Speaker 3: So you know, they might have been told too, he's
- 1:51Speaker 3: going to take ten eleven million dollars multi years, where
- 1:54Speaker 3: the Yankees say, you know what, we're not going to
- 1:56Speaker 3: bother make an offer, so they must have an idea
- 1:58Speaker 3: of what was going to take.
- 2:01Speaker 5: I want to talk one more thing about New York here.
- 2:03Speaker 5: You know, the Mets are starting to make these moves
- 2:06Speaker 5: after the whole big trading, Nemo getting Alonso didn't come back,
- 2:10Speaker 5: Edwin Diaz didn't come back. What's next for the Mets
- 2:14Speaker 5: and the Yankees as well? I mean they're both part
- 2:16Speaker 5: of this. I mean both you know, Devin Williams played
- 2:18Speaker 5: for the Yankees and Weaver played for the Yankees as well.
- 2:23Speaker 6: So do you see.
- 2:24Speaker 5: Anything happening before you know, the holiday comes here with
- 2:26Speaker 5: both these New York teams?
- 2:27Speaker 6: Anything anymore or anything less? What do you think?
- 2:30Speaker 3: Well, less have got to get a big time starter somewhere,
- 2:33Speaker 3: you know, whether it's a uh, you know, uh your frame,
- 2:36Speaker 3: Red Beldez or Michael King or you know the Japanese Star.
- 2:42Speaker 3: You gotta you gotta get somebody to turn that thing around.
- 2:44Speaker 3: So they're reshaping that thing in Stern's image, and uh
- 2:48Speaker 3: what Sterns wants. And I think, you know, kudos to
- 2:52Speaker 3: Stearns were not caring about the the pr backlash. I
- 2:55Speaker 3: think he wanted to make this with this team his
- 2:58Speaker 3: style and kind of told Steve co Okay, you got Sodo,
- 3:01Speaker 3: let me do the rest here. I still find that
- 3:04Speaker 3: whole trade fascinating that Nimmo was willing to waive his
- 3:08Speaker 3: no trade clause after spending his whole time there building
- 3:12Speaker 3: a house in Port Saint Luci. So I still think
- 3:16Speaker 3: and you still hear rumblings of what's actually going on
- 3:19Speaker 3: in the clubhouse dynamics.
- 3:22Speaker 7: Let's talk about Tatsuomi.
- 3:24Speaker 4: Is the market for him going to just explode in
- 3:28Speaker 4: the sense that everybody's final offers are going to come
- 3:31Speaker 4: in because of that deadline that he has. That couldn't
- 3:36Speaker 4: that happen for other free agents if they had their
- 3:39Speaker 4: own deadline, which might actually work in Tatsuyama's favor for
- 3:45Speaker 4: the bigger markets here.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Well, I think with that Dylan cease for what he got,
- 3:50Speaker 3: I don't think enemy expected him to get two or ten,
- 3:53Speaker 3: but took off the year he came off as like
- 3:55Speaker 3: his name being going top that. So I'm sure you
- 3:57Speaker 3: know both Emaya and Framer bell da as I said, hey,
- 4:01Speaker 3: I want something close to it, if not tomp it.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Uh.
- 4:05Speaker 3: You know, I think of beldesmy saying, you know what,
- 4:07Speaker 3: let me wait for my to sign.
- 4:09Speaker 2: And I'm gonna piggyback off him.
- 4:11Speaker 3: So I think they're kind of looking at each other
- 4:13Speaker 3: that they believe that they should be in the same ballpark,
- 4:17Speaker 3: and nobody really wants to jump.
- 4:18Speaker 5: First, let's talk about you know, you're wearing a purple
- 4:23Speaker 5: shirt right now, Arizona Diamondbacks.
- 4:25Speaker 6: I think there's a reasoning for that. No, I'm just kidding.
- 4:28Speaker 5: But ultimately, ultimately Alex Bregman, he's been on a lot
- 4:32Speaker 5: of talks, you know, a couple of teams here and
- 4:34Speaker 5: there are the Arizona Diamondbacks to play here or are
- 4:38Speaker 5: we just hearing this.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Well, yeah, yeah, you're talking to Dinmack officials and no
- 4:44Speaker 3: words kicking the tires. I think it's the thing where
- 4:46Speaker 3: if they do consel Marte, that's about a hard million
- 4:50Speaker 3: bucks come off the books. Uh, you know, Bregman won't
- 4:53Speaker 3: be that much more in that, and then you can
- 4:55Speaker 3: bring him in.
- 4:56Speaker 2: They need a big clubhouse influence in there.
- 4:59Speaker 3: They got you know, some great eight star players Corbyn Carroll,
- 5:01Speaker 3: but a young guy not really ready to assume that
- 5:05Speaker 3: veteran leadership, and I think Bregnant would fill that role.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Bregnant Spence as winners in Scottsdell working out. I think
- 5:12Speaker 3: he's got a second home here, that sort of thing.
- 5:15Speaker 3: So uh yeah, no, one thought that a year ago
- 5:19Speaker 3: to get Clebyn Burns, and they did and this would
- 5:21Speaker 3: be another surprise. They're kind of, you know, seeing whether
- 5:25Speaker 3: that pregnant market really opens up.
- 5:27Speaker 2: But right now it's kind of the same teams as
- 5:29Speaker 2: a year ago.
- 5:29Speaker 3: You know, Boston, Detroit, Cubs would degree, but I'm not
- 5:33Speaker 3: sure the Cubs you know, have as much interest as
- 5:35Speaker 3: they did a year ago because Matt Shaw had a
- 5:38Speaker 3: pretty solid rookie year.
- 5:40Speaker 4: Are the kicking the tires so that what you said,
- 5:43Speaker 4: like the market kind of kicks up. Like if you
- 5:46Speaker 4: never if other teams don't ever make offers or really
- 5:49Speaker 4: push for a player, the player is never going to
- 5:52Speaker 4: make that much money. So is this just an easy
- 5:55Speaker 4: is this just an easy story when you go and
- 5:58Speaker 4: call kind of getting into like what you do when
- 6:00Speaker 4: you talk to club officials, it's like, what's the hurt?
- 6:03Speaker 4: What's the hurt of the Diamondbacks saying yeah, you know what,
- 6:06Speaker 4: we'll see if he's willing to take another one year deal.
- 6:08Speaker 4: We'll see if he's willing to take you know, less years.
- 6:12Speaker 4: But it's not really something that's out there.
- 6:16Speaker 3: I mean, I don't think it's like a Pittsburgh case
- 6:18Speaker 3: where Pittsburgh couldn't wait till tell everybody in the world
- 6:20Speaker 3: they wanted to college college Warbor, just give me leaking
- 6:24Speaker 3: out the numbers. I don't I don't think exact case.
- 6:27Speaker 3: I think it's that they don't know for sure what
- 6:30Speaker 3: happens to Marte. If they move Marte, dinner's a spot
- 6:33Speaker 3: for him. If they don't move, tell Marte, then there's
- 6:36Speaker 3: really no room. So I think that's why they're letting uh,
- 6:39Speaker 3: you know, Scott Bors and them know that, Hey, we're
- 6:42Speaker 3: involved here, but we gotta we gotta do some things
- 6:45Speaker 3: before we go full force into the pregnant sweepstakes.
- 6:51Speaker 6: Let me let me ask you this.
- 6:52Speaker 5: So it seems like as these trades and free agencies
- 6:56Speaker 5: are picking.
- 6:56Speaker 6: Up, it just seems like it's the same old teams.
- 6:59Speaker 5: Uh, you know, Blue Jays are finding ways, the Phillies,
- 7:02Speaker 5: the Braves, the Yankees, the Mets. Do you see any
- 7:04Speaker 5: other like teams Dodgers coming along here that are just
- 7:07Speaker 5: gonna find a way to get a free agent, Like
- 7:10Speaker 5: if they want somebody, they got to go out and
- 7:12Speaker 5: get them and spend Do you see that happening here
- 7:13Speaker 5: or is it just gonna be the big teams taking
- 7:15Speaker 5: over again.
- 7:17Speaker 2: I saw need some big teams, Like you know, Kansas
- 7:19Speaker 2: City has been very aggressive.
- 7:21Speaker 3: They're you know, small market. Uh, Atlanta's kind of a
- 7:24Speaker 3: dark horse. They've been making moves here. They still got
- 7:27Speaker 3: money to spend, so I think they you know, I
- 7:29Speaker 3: think it were kind of embarrassed and didn't make the
- 7:31Speaker 3: playoffs last year, and so they're full throttle love the
- 7:34Speaker 3: movies they made so far.
- 7:36Speaker 2: And but you're right, it remains of a year ago.
- 7:38Speaker 3: Even with guys like a you know, Nolan Arnatto out there,
- 7:43Speaker 3: you know what what happens to him, He's get in
- 7:45Speaker 3: the same boat as a year ago, waiting for the
- 7:48Speaker 3: bringing the market.
- 7:49Speaker 2: He was hoping breugnant when not stay with Boston, he
- 7:51Speaker 2: would have been in Boston.
- 7:53Speaker 3: If the Diamondbacks don't get Brugman, I think you would
- 7:55Speaker 3: love to go to Arizona.
- 7:58Speaker 4: Speaking of Boston, are they doing enough when they watched
- 8:01Speaker 4: the when they watch the Blue Jays all these signings,
- 8:05Speaker 4: they still haven't signed a big league player yet. They're
- 8:09Speaker 4: the only team in one of three teams to not
- 8:11Speaker 4: sign anybody to a big league contract. Now, I get
- 8:15Speaker 4: they made trades, but are they too much quote in
- 8:20Speaker 4: on people and not actually going after them.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're sitting to mark at their price.
- 8:26Speaker 3: And then Dodgers did that obviously with Diaz, and then
- 8:29Speaker 3: Dodgers have done that, you know before, they did that
- 8:31Speaker 3: with Soto. I'm sure they'll do the same thing with Tucker,
- 8:34Speaker 3: saying take he or leave it, that type of thing.
- 8:37Speaker 3: So yeah, they're just being very methodical about it and say,
- 8:40Speaker 3: you know what, we'll wait for someone to panic here
- 8:42Speaker 3: and take what we offer.
- 8:44Speaker 2: So and obviously they got plenty of money.
- 8:45Speaker 3: They still got that money they ever, you know that
- 8:48Speaker 3: you saved on Rafael Devers trade. So I still think
- 8:51Speaker 3: they got some tricks at their sleeve. And but you know,
- 8:54Speaker 3: it wouldn't be surprised at all to see those moves
- 8:56Speaker 3: come late January early forevery how.
- 8:59Speaker 4: About the Phillies. Are the Phillies done? They got a
- 9:02Speaker 4: Dolis Garcia. I obviously think, you know, if they were
- 9:06Speaker 4: able to move bom out of the position, out of
- 9:09Speaker 4: third base because it's his last year, it will be
- 9:11Speaker 4: a free agent after the season, and something with costianis
- 9:15Speaker 4: obviously they filled the Costiano's part. Is there a chance
- 9:18Speaker 4: that they move to moving Bomb or the Phillies done and.
- 9:22Speaker 7: They like where their lineup is currently.
- 9:26Speaker 2: I think the Boom thing would be the X factor.
- 9:28Speaker 3: I could see them moving Boom and then, you know,
- 9:31Speaker 3: if they want, they could jump in on Bregman sort
- 9:33Speaker 3: of thing, because right now they're going to run the
- 9:35Speaker 3: same thing back except for Johnson Crawford. He'll be the
- 9:38Speaker 3: starting center fielder. They're excited about Garcia. They think he'll
- 9:42Speaker 3: bounce back, and hey, what hitter doesn't want to hit?
- 9:44Speaker 3: And U says, it's big part of park in Philadelphia,
- 9:48Speaker 3: so I would think you'll have a much better year there.
- 9:51Speaker 3: So they're mixing up. They about Andrew Paynton rotation. So
- 9:54Speaker 3: they made a enough fload of moves. But I think
- 9:56Speaker 3: Boom's the only guy who could possibly move and then
- 10:00Speaker 3: shake things up even more. But right now, you know,
- 10:02Speaker 3: Dave Dombrowski said, we're set, We're not getting more outkillers,
- 10:07Speaker 3: and uh, you know, don't really ask them about Boom,
- 10:10Speaker 3: but that's certainly a possibility. Uh if they do move Boom,
- 10:14Speaker 3: then what what do they do afterwards?
- 10:17Speaker 6: Uh? Talking about third basement?
- 10:19Speaker 5: Uh, e Hen Suarez hasn't been much talk about him lately,
- 10:23Speaker 5: kind of under the radar. A very good third basement
- 10:25Speaker 5: a really good hit or two. In my opinion, How
- 10:28Speaker 5: do you see him shaping up here eventually with the
- 10:31Speaker 5: team and the third base market in general, how do
- 10:35Speaker 5: you see it shaking up as we move forward.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Yeah, I think what hurts him is that the Diamondbacks,
- 10:40Speaker 3: you know, trading him and then I'm pretty much trading
- 10:44Speaker 3: for nothing. They they didn't get a whole bunch back
- 10:46Speaker 3: in return. I think they was done how little they
- 10:49Speaker 3: got back, and then they trade them and then Seattle
- 10:52Speaker 3: pretty much says, hey, we're not bringing them back no interest.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Granted he didn't have a great finish for them, but
- 10:59Speaker 3: still as in big games and played during the past.
- 11:02Speaker 3: So I think those two things hurt his value. I
- 11:05Speaker 3: think he kind of sits out there, uh, waiting to
- 11:08Speaker 3: see what happens with Murakami.
- 11:10Speaker 2: So when Maerkami signs and his deadline.
- 11:12Speaker 3: Is Monday, then he can kind of realize, okay, what
- 11:16Speaker 3: spots are open. And then when you know wherever he goes,
- 11:19Speaker 3: then I think Ernando waits for him and says, okay,
- 11:22Speaker 3: I'll you know, hopefully I'll get trade to uh where
- 11:25Speaker 3: he is, and I did.
- 11:26Speaker 2: I did. The Cardinals will eat a lot of money just.
- 11:28Speaker 3: I did a lot of money sending Gray I think
- 11:31Speaker 3: a lot of money to in Ernando's contract just to
- 11:34Speaker 3: get back to those prospects.
- 11:36Speaker 4: So is the is the market held up by Marikami?
- 11:41Speaker 4: Is the market held up by the fact that you
- 11:44Speaker 4: can get whatever you'll get Aeronauto for essentially nothing? Or
- 11:49Speaker 4: who who would you say is holding the market up
- 11:51Speaker 4: right now?
- 11:52Speaker 7: Of those three?
- 11:54Speaker 3: Yeah, those three has got to be Marikami. I mean
- 11:57Speaker 3: he's the Uh, he's this stuff everybody wants. One's quite
- 12:00Speaker 3: sure what you get. I mean you get, you know,
- 12:02Speaker 3: do you get forty home runs and two innerd shrakouts?
- 12:05Speaker 3: A lot of teams will take that, but he just
- 12:07Speaker 3: don't know.
- 12:08Speaker 8: Uh.
- 12:08Speaker 3: Suarez is very streaky er you know, pretty much finish
- 12:12Speaker 3: the second half on the injur list, So you're not
- 12:16Speaker 3: quite sure what you get from him either health wise.
- 12:19Speaker 3: So of the three, I would think that or not
- 12:21Speaker 3: will be the last one, you know, to get traded.
- 12:24Speaker 3: It wouldn't shock me to see him in the spring
- 12:26Speaker 3: training just for teams to see what he can do
- 12:29Speaker 3: or at least, you know, work out for teams to
- 12:31Speaker 3: say what he has left. So he's got two years
- 12:34Speaker 3: on his contract. Uh, you know his squarez was unbelievable
- 12:38Speaker 3: for the Diamondbacks, but he just wasn't that same guy
- 12:40Speaker 3: with him errors.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Wan a double down on Murkami. I don't feel like
- 12:46Speaker 1: I've gotten the info that I wanted leading up to
- 12:49Speaker 1: this signing. I look up suddenly, I'm like, WHOA, he's
- 12:52Speaker 1: going to sign in the next several days, right, I
- 12:55Speaker 1: mean the deadline is on Monday, so you presume we're
- 12:58Speaker 1: doing this show right now on even know what day is? Day? Tuesday,
- 13:01Speaker 1: wednesdaydays Wednesday, right, So Bob, we're running out of time here.
- 13:06Speaker 1: And usually with a player of this ILK who is
- 13:09Speaker 1: a big deal out in Japan with big power, I
- 13:12Speaker 1: get it, swing and misconcerns cool, get in line. There
- 13:15Speaker 1: are many on that list in terms of free agency
- 13:17Speaker 1: and players in general. These days, no whining and dining
- 13:21Speaker 1: and visiting teams. We usually find out a little bit
- 13:24Speaker 1: of that when someone's being courted. Do you find it
- 13:26Speaker 1: odd that we haven't heard about it? Maybe either it's
- 13:29Speaker 1: been kept really quiet, or he's not doing the tour
- 13:32Speaker 1: in the song and dance and he's just figuring out
- 13:35Speaker 1: where's the best fit and the best money and signing there.
- 13:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's just more on behalf of what
- 13:42Speaker 3: he wants and he wants to be quiet. You know,
- 13:45Speaker 3: rookie Sosaki is pretty quiet too. I mean, everybody kind
- 13:48Speaker 3: of assume was given the Dodgers. Then you heard the
- 13:51Speaker 3: pod rice, but you know, it wasn't like he was
- 13:53Speaker 3: out there announcing. It was just when he got spotted.
- 13:57Speaker 3: So for Murakami not to be doing tours and not
- 13:59Speaker 3: being spoted on social media, I think he helps him.
- 14:02Speaker 3: But I bet it's you know, I bet he what
- 14:04Speaker 3: he wants. I'm sure he told his agency let's keep
- 14:07Speaker 3: this quiet. You know, for all we know, the Tigers
- 14:10Speaker 3: are all lying on him. Tigers would like to have
- 14:12Speaker 3: a third baseman. It would seem like they would get
- 14:15Speaker 3: one of these guys.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Uh.
- 14:16Speaker 3: So you know, maybe it's Mara comedy. They spend that
- 14:18Speaker 3: kind of money. So you know, because him for keeping
- 14:22Speaker 3: it quiet. Uh, it may just be out of the
- 14:24Speaker 3: blue on Monday, like okay here it is boom, almost
- 14:27Speaker 3: like what Atlanta does with all their trades and transactions.
- 14:30Speaker 3: It's like you're not sure what's coming until they just
- 14:32Speaker 3: you know, announce it right there on social media.
- 14:36Speaker 4: Does that make it more likely that it is a
- 14:37Speaker 4: team like the Tigers or like the Reds, or when
- 14:41Speaker 4: when you don't hear much, are there certain teams that
- 14:44Speaker 4: that's their mo o, that hey, we're not going to
- 14:46Speaker 4: really publicize this, and if the player doesn't publicize it,
- 14:50Speaker 4: then nobody really finds out about it.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Yeah, it is, you know.
- 14:54Speaker 3: I think Baltimore kept that so quiet there, you know,
- 14:57Speaker 3: with a schwarb or keeping that as quiet as fond
- 15:00Speaker 3: well knowing if they don't want that. Philly's a top
- 15:02Speaker 3: it where you'll piss bring me into public. Cincinnati was
- 15:06Speaker 3: semi private, but they win and done him in August
- 15:09Speaker 3: when Adam brought the first bitch and with his father
- 15:12Speaker 3: and coach, and they would have kept going up too.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Just that. I think Schwarber said, I want to go
- 15:17Speaker 2: back to Philadelphia. Don't waste your time.
- 15:19Speaker 3: But I think if you're really serious about a guy,
- 15:21Speaker 3: you do keep it as quiet as possible.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Because you don't want anybody to want to know how
- 15:25Speaker 2: interesting you are.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Bob, I'll finished with this. It was where we started
- 15:31Speaker 1: with the reliever signings, and we keep learning more about
- 15:35Speaker 1: the Edwin Diaz exit from the Mets. What did you
- 15:38Speaker 1: think of his recent comments regarding the conversations they had
- 15:42Speaker 1: about the money and the Mets had flexibility. It sounds
- 15:45Speaker 1: like he basically brought the number he felt like the
- 15:49Speaker 1: market was at to the Mets they said no, but
- 15:52Speaker 1: maybe later, and he brought it to the Dodgers and
- 15:54Speaker 1: they said yes, but now, and he signed.
- 16:00Speaker 3: I think he got totally insense when he found out
- 16:02Speaker 3: that Devin Williams, you know, got signed through social media.
- 16:06Speaker 3: That he wasn't given a warning like, hey, if you
- 16:08Speaker 3: don't take this, we're gonna sign Devin Williams.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Once they signed Devin Williams, I know the.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Met said, oh, we want We're so interested in I Dias,
- 16:16Speaker 3: but not really, You're not gonna spend one hundred fifty
- 16:18Speaker 3: million dollars on two back end relievers. And I think
- 16:22Speaker 3: then when they started, you know, Nicol and Dimond him
- 16:24Speaker 3: saying well, it's a three year deal.
- 16:26Speaker 2: We'll raise it a little bit. Then he was just
- 16:28Speaker 2: sped up and say, you know what.
- 16:30Speaker 3: Let me go to the Dodgers, let me save fifty
- 16:32Speaker 3: sixty games a year, let me go in the Hall
- 16:34Speaker 3: of Fame this way. So I think the whole Williams
- 16:37Speaker 3: thing and the way they handle it just had him,
- 16:40Speaker 3: you know, off the deep end, like, wait him now,
- 16:43Speaker 3: after everything I've given you guys, but took you down
- 16:46Speaker 3: the stretch when he was pitching two winnings at time.
- 16:48Speaker 3: I remember that last game in Miami. I think you
- 16:51Speaker 3: pitched in the fourth inning, two winnings. So he sccrificed
- 16:54Speaker 3: a lot for those guys, and I think he said,
- 16:57Speaker 3: you know what, I'm out of here.
- 16:59Speaker 2: You could have on somewhere else. He said, let me
- 17:01Speaker 2: let me join the Dodgers.
- 17:03Speaker 3: They're gonna trade me right and let me save sixty
- 17:06Speaker 3: seventy games.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Maybe fifty is too low.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Last one here? Which side are you on with that game?
- 17:13Speaker 1: If the Mets really did still want to court him,
- 17:16Speaker 1: do you think that they mishandled this? You definitely have
- 17:19Speaker 1: a crowd that will say, why does he need a
- 17:21Speaker 1: phone call? If the Mets are offering him big money,
- 17:25Speaker 1: he's likely going to still be their closer. They're getting
- 17:30Speaker 1: themselves not only a backup plan, but somebody that helps
- 17:33Speaker 1: make his job presumably easier. He doesn't have to always
- 17:36Speaker 1: pop into the eighth inning and they're fighting for their
- 17:39Speaker 1: playoff lives. I mean, if you're Edwin Diaz, you would
- 17:41Speaker 1: love to have three four closers around you. So if
- 17:45Speaker 1: it literally comes down to the phone call, then okay,
- 17:48Speaker 1: it's nice to know. I actually take the other side here, Bob,
- 17:52Speaker 1: which maybe you're taking. If I'm the Mets and I
- 17:54Speaker 1: feel like that's what he needs and I'm really recruiting him.
- 17:57Speaker 1: A phone call costs me nothing, so I'll just make
- 17:59Speaker 1: the call and be like, hey, just so you know,
- 18:00Speaker 1: we still love you, we're going after you. We're just
- 18:02Speaker 1: getting Devin Williams to pop into the eighth inning if
- 18:05Speaker 1: need be, so hope, that's cool. We don't want to
- 18:07Speaker 1: overwork you over the next three four years, and will
- 18:10Speaker 1: you sign here. But clearly he was offended by the
- 18:12Speaker 1: actual process that went down. From a communications standpoint.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I think I think it Defendantom. I think
- 18:20Speaker 2: he did deserve that phone call. Everything he's done for the.
- 18:23Speaker 3: Mets, being with him for seven years, and just like
- 18:26Speaker 3: you said, Skott, just explain it to him, Hey, we're
- 18:28Speaker 3: not having signing him to replace you, but just to
- 18:30Speaker 3: help you out. But just for him to know that,
- 18:33Speaker 3: you know, hey, we saw that a few years ago
- 18:35Speaker 3: in Atlanta with Freddy Freeman when they traded for a
- 18:38Speaker 3: Grit you know, for Olsen met Olsen, and he had
- 18:41Speaker 3: no idea. He was kind of blindsided by that. It's like, WHOA,
- 18:44Speaker 3: I guess I'm out of here, and I think maybe
- 18:46Speaker 3: the same thing here with Diaz, like I'm out of
- 18:49Speaker 3: here too. I'm not coming back for the same amount
- 18:52Speaker 3: of years as you give in Devon Williams, I deserve
- 18:54Speaker 3: at least a four or five year deal. So I think,
- 18:56Speaker 3: you know, not apples and apples, but I think a
- 18:59Speaker 3: little bit hurt feelings that you know can't at least
- 19:02Speaker 3: give me a phone call to let me know what's
- 19:04Speaker 3: happening here.
- 19:06Speaker 5: I think I think you're one hundred percent right, and
- 19:08Speaker 5: I'm gonna leave you with this because it wouldn't be me.
- 19:10Speaker 6: I'm from Jersey. I'd like to put you on the
- 19:12Speaker 6: spot here a little bit like what I was doing.
- 19:14Speaker 6: I talked to you.
- 19:15Speaker 5: Give me, give me something right now that you think,
- 19:18Speaker 5: you know out of the ordinary, or you think might happen.
- 19:21Speaker 5: You know, before the New year, what trade or what
- 19:24Speaker 5: kind of free agent. There's something outlandish that you think
- 19:27Speaker 5: might happen, might not happen, but something in your mind
- 19:29Speaker 5: where it's like this seems like a logical place for
- 19:32Speaker 5: this person to go.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I still think, you know, the pottery
- 19:37Speaker 2: is up to something with a j. Preller. I would
- 19:39Speaker 2: not be shocked to see.
- 19:41Speaker 3: You know, Miller on the move again and uh, you know,
- 19:44Speaker 3: maybe pavetted with him. So I think they're gonna do
- 19:48Speaker 3: be the biggest A prize. And I still think the
- 19:51Speaker 3: mess up some stuff up their sleeve. You know, they've
- 19:53Speaker 3: already stolen a couple of guys from the Yankees. Why
- 19:56Speaker 3: not go one more in grab a at Bellinger. I
- 19:59Speaker 3: think they want to whoa and I think that'd be
- 20:03Speaker 3: a perfect fit. I don't think they're big on Tucker,
- 20:05Speaker 3: but I think Bellinger fits in perfectly as far as
- 20:08Speaker 3: you know, playing great defense in the outfield and first base,
- 20:12Speaker 3: which believe I think. And I think Tucker ends up
- 20:14Speaker 3: in Toronto. I don't see a big fit with him
- 20:17Speaker 3: anywhere else.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Todd Father, I heard of Rick Flair woo from you.
- 20:27Speaker 6: More is better. I always say, let's go whoo.
- 20:30Speaker 1: All right, Well, that's a good way to finish it, Bob.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Great to chat, and we'll look forward to more reports
- 20:34Speaker 1: and updates from you on socials and in USA today
- 20:37Speaker 1: this week. I think it'll be continue. I think it'll
- 20:40Speaker 1: continue to be active. Thanks vib good talking to.
- 20:42Speaker 6: You all right.
- 20:43Speaker 2: I've always guys, take care the.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Top Braves podcast for the Atlanta fans out there, it's
- 20:50Speaker 1: called Hammer Territory. It's part of the FT Network. It
- 20:53Speaker 1: is something that should be on your radar. Scott Coleman
- 20:56Speaker 1: and a cast of other hosts are part of that. Scott,
- 21:00Speaker 1: great to see you get tons of episodes in really
- 21:02Speaker 1: good coverage and also when there's breaking news, they've got
- 21:05Speaker 1: it instantly. On the deals, the trades, whatever alex Anthopolis
- 21:09Speaker 1: is doing. Since we all find out together via press release,
- 21:11Speaker 1: that's how it works with the Braves, Scott. So let's
- 21:15Speaker 1: start here. Are Braves fans happy right now with the
- 21:19Speaker 1: off season so far for Atlanta? Given that they usually
- 21:23Speaker 1: like to do things early, there might not be much
- 21:26Speaker 1: left for them to do the rest of the way.
- 21:30Speaker 8: That's a great question, and I would say if you
- 21:32Speaker 8: pulled one hundred Braves fans outside of Truesst Park, the
- 21:35Speaker 8: answer for the most part would be yes. Now, there's
- 21:38Speaker 8: probably fans who have expectations of every big free agent
- 21:41Speaker 8: on the market coming to Atlanta, and I don't know
- 21:43Speaker 8: how realistic that would be. But if you look at
- 21:46Speaker 8: what the Braves have added on the whole, I really
- 21:48Speaker 8: like the depth and quantity of editions that they've added
- 21:51Speaker 8: so far. And maybe they have one or two more
- 21:53Speaker 8: big moves in them.
- 21:58Speaker 7: In what area.
- 21:59Speaker 4: What's the one or two big moves that because to me,
- 22:04Speaker 4: the Kim signing when I saw yesterday, we talked about it.
- 22:09Speaker 4: It was about solidifying something that they haven't been able
- 22:11Speaker 4: to solidify since they've been to the World Series, and
- 22:13Speaker 4: that's the defensive shortstop position. The big move comes in
- 22:18Speaker 4: a trade because they're getting up close to that soft
- 22:22Speaker 4: salary cap, or the big move comes in dumping some
- 22:26Speaker 4: type of salary to then bring in a free agent.
- 22:30Speaker 8: So for my money, the big thing that this front
- 22:33Speaker 8: office needs to still do is add a starting pitcher
- 22:36Speaker 8: to supplement Chris s Ale, Spencer Schwallenbach and Spencer Strider.
- 22:41Speaker 8: And it's interesting that other than Dylan C's, the top
- 22:44Speaker 8: of the starting pitching market hasn't really moved.
- 22:47Speaker 7: A ton yet.
- 22:48Speaker 8: I know Merril Kelly signed, I know Sunny Gray was traded,
- 22:52Speaker 8: but the kind of the big four of Valdez, Suarez,
- 22:57Speaker 8: King and Gallon are still out there and depending on
- 22:59Speaker 8: how much twenty the Braves have to spend, and if
- 23:01Speaker 8: they're willing to give up a late first round draft
- 23:04Speaker 8: pick to sign one of those four, I could see
- 23:06Speaker 8: one of them being a worthwhile addition to this team
- 23:09Speaker 8: to really pour some fuel on this fire to try
- 23:11Speaker 8: to get them back to the top of the NL East.
- 23:14Speaker 8: This is a franchise since winning the World Series in
- 23:16Speaker 8: twenty twenty one, that has won two playoff games, which
- 23:21Speaker 8: is kind of hard to fathom. I think this roster
- 23:24Speaker 8: is in pretty good shape now, but clearly adding a
- 23:26Speaker 8: starting pitcher, maybe a little bit more to the bullpen
- 23:29Speaker 8: would be really a big step in the right direction
- 23:31Speaker 8: to getting this team as good as it can possibly
- 23:33Speaker 8: be for spring training.
- 23:36Speaker 5: Well, let me go along those lines with who they have,
- 23:39Speaker 5: the acquisitions and the pickups. Are they back to being
- 23:43Speaker 5: legit contenders in the East?
- 23:46Speaker 8: I think so. And the reason I've liked to the
- 23:49Speaker 8: moves of the offseason so far is it is really
- 23:52Speaker 8: raising the floor of this roster because at the end
- 23:56Speaker 8: of last year, as disappointing of a season as it was,
- 23:59Speaker 8: the Braves just did not have enough depth and versatility
- 24:03Speaker 8: on the roster to navigate one hundred and sixty two games,
- 24:06Speaker 8: and of course they got crushed by injuries, but they
- 24:08Speaker 8: also underperformed significantly. So I think assuming the Braves do
- 24:13Speaker 8: add a starting pitcher, I think you can say that
- 24:16Speaker 8: this roster is just as good as Phillies or New York.
- 24:19Speaker 8: But at the end of the day, they one have
- 24:21Speaker 8: to hope that the injuries balance out a little bit
- 24:24Speaker 8: in their favor and they don't have their entire starting
- 24:26Speaker 8: rotation on the sixty day IL as it was at
- 24:29Speaker 8: one point last year, and also hope for healthier seasons.
- 24:33Speaker 8: Get Akunya for one hundred and sixty two. Austin Riley
- 24:36Speaker 8: has missed significant time the last two years with serious injuries.
- 24:40Speaker 8: Ozzie Alby's has been banged up, Michael Harris has missed time.
- 24:44Speaker 8: You have to hope that this team not only performs
- 24:46Speaker 8: to the level that we've seen in the past, but
- 24:48Speaker 8: also just doesn't get half the team on the injured list,
- 24:50Speaker 8: because that's been the case the better part of the
- 24:52Speaker 8: last two seasons.
- 24:55Speaker 4: Two questions I have for it kind of interlock. How
- 24:59Speaker 4: will Walt Weiss his promotion to be the manager because
- 25:03Speaker 4: he was on the he's been on the bench, he's
- 25:05Speaker 4: been around this team, they know him. How will this
- 25:09Speaker 4: affect this position player group because this position player group
- 25:14Speaker 4: you said, ah, they don't have that depth. Yes, there's injuries,
- 25:18Speaker 4: but this team's built similarly to the Dodgers in the
- 25:22Speaker 4: sense of position players. They want to play every day.
- 25:25Speaker 4: All these guys want to play every day. And nobody's
- 25:27Speaker 4: looking to say, oh, okay, yeah, we'll let acoon you
- 25:30Speaker 4: take DHS. You know, because you're still have Sean Murphy,
- 25:34Speaker 4: you still have Drake Baldwin. Uh, okay, you know, we'll
- 25:37Speaker 4: let profar you know what. They're putting some pieces around him.
- 25:41Speaker 4: But essentially, how's Walt Weiss going to put his fingerprint
- 25:44Speaker 4: on this to mitigate injury? Nobody can eliminate injury, but
- 25:49Speaker 4: mitigate it because all these guys want to play one
- 25:51Speaker 4: hundred and sixty two.
- 25:53Speaker 8: It will be fascinating to see. And that's something that
- 25:56Speaker 8: Walt has talked about a few times now since getting
- 25:58Speaker 8: the job. I think get the winter meetings, he said that, hey,
- 26:01Speaker 8: we want our players to be out there every day,
- 26:03Speaker 8: but there's going to come a point in time where
- 26:05Speaker 8: we need to get someone off their feet for just
- 26:07Speaker 8: one night or utilize the DH and in recent years. One,
- 26:11Speaker 8: I don't know if the Braves necessarily had the bench
- 26:14Speaker 8: to accommodate multiple days off for these players. And two,
- 26:18Speaker 8: now that Marcelo Zuna has left, the organization probably won't
- 26:23Speaker 8: be back. Ozuna was dhing virtually every single day of
- 26:26Speaker 8: the season. Now they have an open DH spot, and
- 26:29Speaker 8: I think Walt Weiss will use that to his advantage.
- 26:32Speaker 8: He can rotate Acuna there, he can rotate Profar there,
- 26:35Speaker 8: he can rotate mike Yastremsky one of their offseason editions there.
- 26:39Speaker 8: And even if Austin Riley likes to go out through
- 26:41Speaker 8: every single day, maybe they give Riley an afternoon off
- 26:44Speaker 8: and keep them in the DH spot just to keep
- 26:46Speaker 8: everybody fresh. I imagine that Weiss will be a little
- 26:49Speaker 8: more open to rotating his players in and out of
- 26:52Speaker 8: the lineup than Brian Sticker was the last handful of years.
- 26:57Speaker 7: How's Mikey Strempsey going to be used? How is this?
- 27:00Speaker 4: Because this is a signing of an older player who
- 27:04Speaker 4: has shown when he gets consistent at bats, he's more productive.
- 27:08Speaker 4: I feel like you don't sign it feels like the
- 27:11Speaker 4: position in the fit doesn't match the contract. I feel
- 27:16Speaker 4: like the contract matches the player that he is, but
- 27:18Speaker 4: the fit on the team. How is this how is
- 27:21Speaker 4: this contract going to be? You know, how is it
- 27:24Speaker 4: going to parallel to his playing time?
- 27:27Speaker 8: So it's funny you say that last night or two
- 27:30Speaker 8: nights ago. Rather when Alex and Thopplss met with the
- 27:33Speaker 8: media to talk about the Hussan Kim signing, somebody asked
- 27:36Speaker 8: about Mike Yustremsky and that role, and in thoughtless pretty
- 27:39Speaker 8: much came out and said that the idea is for
- 27:42Speaker 8: against right handed pitching, for Yastremsky to play left field
- 27:46Speaker 8: most days and have Jerks and Profar become the DH.
- 27:50Speaker 8: I think Stromsky is probably a better glove at this
- 27:52Speaker 8: point in his career compared to Profar, So you have
- 27:55Speaker 8: Ustremsky and left field Profar at DH against lefties where
- 28:00Speaker 8: Streemsky maybe wasn't quite as good the last couple of years.
- 28:03Speaker 8: That's where I think the lineup change maybe will come
- 28:05Speaker 8: into play a bit more. And Thoppelss suggested they would
- 28:08Speaker 8: then have Profar play left field and then have one
- 28:11Speaker 8: of a handful of guys DH. It could be Sean
- 28:13Speaker 8: Murphy once he recovers from hip surgery. It could be
- 28:16Speaker 8: Eli White, who's a speedy outfielder who can run into
- 28:19Speaker 8: a home run ball. You could even have Mauricio Dubon,
- 28:22Speaker 8: or if you want to play Dubon at second base
- 28:24Speaker 8: and have Ozzie Alby's DH night or Hasan Kim DH
- 28:27Speaker 8: for a night. I really think we're going to see
- 28:29Speaker 8: a shift as evidence of both what we Weiss has
- 28:32Speaker 8: said and what the Braves have done with their actions
- 28:34Speaker 8: this offseason, that we are going to see more of
- 28:36Speaker 8: a versatile lineup construction night in a night out, and
- 28:40Speaker 8: hopefully that kind of gets the Braves away from these
- 28:43Speaker 8: offensive woes they've had the past couple of years.
- 28:47Speaker 5: Martin Maldonado is now a special assistant. Can you talk
- 28:50Speaker 5: a little bit about what his role is going to
- 28:53Speaker 5: be with the Braves moving forward? You know, really good
- 28:57Speaker 5: baseball player back in the day, played again him a
- 29:00Speaker 5: little bit to talk a little bit about, you know,
- 29:02Speaker 5: what his job title is. You know there's been a
- 29:04Speaker 5: lot of special assistance for teams, but do you see
- 29:06Speaker 5: an expanded role or anything else.
- 29:09Speaker 8: I thought it was a fascinating addition, and I think
- 29:12Speaker 8: that was announced earlier today, So we'll see the next
- 29:15Speaker 8: time Alexanthopolos meets with media and gets to talk about it.
- 29:18Speaker 7: A little bit.
- 29:19Speaker 8: But I mean, Maldonado has a wealth of baseball knowledge.
- 29:23Speaker 8: I mean, there may not be five more guys in
- 29:24Speaker 8: the game who have been through more than Maldonado. Of course,
- 29:27Speaker 8: very smart behind the plate as a catcher, So I
- 29:30Speaker 8: really like the addition. I love the idea of Drake Baldwin,
- 29:33Speaker 8: as good as he was as the rookie of the
- 29:35Speaker 8: Year this past season, getting to sit with Maldonado and
- 29:38Speaker 8: learn from him, as well as Sean Murphy, who's a
- 29:41Speaker 8: really when healthy. Murphy has been a really capable catcher
- 29:45Speaker 8: and it's fantastic defensively. And we'll see what other areas
- 29:48Speaker 8: Maldonado is going to extend himself to. But a worthwhile addition,
- 29:52Speaker 8: I believe that Maldonado has talked publicly about wanting to
- 29:55Speaker 8: get into either a front office role or a coaching
- 29:58Speaker 8: or even manager role one day, and this felt like
- 30:00Speaker 8: a natural progression for him, all right.
- 30:03Speaker 4: At a re signing Ryce el Iglesias and then signing
- 30:08Speaker 4: Robert Suarez to the bullpen Suarez, have the brains mentioned
- 30:11Speaker 4: anything about Suarez being more more of the pitcher. They
- 30:15Speaker 4: want him to be as an eighth inning guy like
- 30:18Speaker 4: he was when the Padres had Hater and he had
- 30:22Speaker 4: you know, he had that season in twenty I want
- 30:25Speaker 4: to say twenty two, but I'm not one hundred percent
- 30:27Speaker 4: sure which year that was. Do they see that or
- 30:29Speaker 4: is it more of Ryce Eels here for a year,
- 30:32Speaker 4: then Robert Suarez can move into the closer role. And
- 30:37Speaker 4: along with that, is there a chance with the injuries
- 30:40Speaker 4: from last year that Ronaldo Lopez is seen as maybe
- 30:44Speaker 4: a seventh inning guy or is that just they're going
- 30:46Speaker 4: to keep him starting pitching, ramp up and see where
- 30:50Speaker 4: it goes from there.
- 30:52Speaker 8: So I'm really curious to see how Walt Weiss is
- 30:54Speaker 8: going to utilize Iglesias and Suarez, because presumably you could
- 30:59Speaker 8: use either one and either the eighth or ninth innings,
- 31:02Speaker 8: or if you're playing and you've got three really good
- 31:04Speaker 8: ritis coming up in the seventh inning, I would imagine
- 31:07Speaker 8: the Braves would utilize Suarez to then pitch the seventh
- 31:10Speaker 8: inning and then you figure out the eighth and the ninth.
- 31:13Speaker 8: That was a fascinating signing for me, I thought once
- 31:15Speaker 8: they added Iglesias, even though when Thoplus had said the
- 31:18Speaker 8: bullpen was a priority for them this offseason. I figured
- 31:22Speaker 8: they would add a couple of veterans, but I really
- 31:24Speaker 8: did not see the Braves going out and getting maybe
- 31:26Speaker 8: two of the top five closers on the market. And
- 31:29Speaker 8: not only that, but there was also a report the
- 31:32Speaker 8: Braves had a five year deal out to Edwin Diaz
- 31:35Speaker 8: before he ultimately signed with the Dodgers. So clearly the
- 31:39Speaker 8: bullpen has been an area of focus. And that's a
- 31:42Speaker 8: great question about Ronaldo Lopez. He of course was so
- 31:46Speaker 8: effective in the bullpen a couple of years ago, comes
- 31:49Speaker 8: to the Braves in twenty twenty four, was spectacular in
- 31:52Speaker 8: the rotation. I personally when they added him, I was like, ah,
- 31:56Speaker 8: maybe they'll try him in the spring and see if
- 31:58Speaker 8: he can start. But he was terrific to Era and
- 32:01Speaker 8: then last season, unfortunately, Lopez only made one start, hurt
- 32:05Speaker 8: his shoulder and missed the remainder of the year. So
- 32:09Speaker 8: it's fascinating to see what the Braves are ultimately going
- 32:12Speaker 8: to do with Lopez. They could shift him into a
- 32:15Speaker 8: bullpen roll, and then you think about having Suarez, Iglesias
- 32:19Speaker 8: and Lopez as you're seven eight nine with Dylan Lee,
- 32:22Speaker 8: who's a really good lefty mixed in there as well.
- 32:25Speaker 8: That could be one of the best bullpens in the game.
- 32:27Speaker 8: I think ultimately Lopez's future might be dictated by whether
- 32:32Speaker 8: or not the Braves go out and add a starting
- 32:34Speaker 8: pitcher in the next couple of weeks.
- 32:37Speaker 1: Two things come to mind here. First off, was there
- 32:40Speaker 1: any more to the story about why he ended up
- 32:44Speaker 1: going to LA and not taking a five year offer.
- 32:47Speaker 1: I'm assuming the five year offer was larger than the
- 32:50Speaker 1: ALA offer. If it's five years, sixty five or whatever,
- 32:53Speaker 1: I get it. But why would I mean, sure, he
- 32:56Speaker 1: probably just wanted to go to LA or originally was
- 32:58Speaker 1: entertaining the Mets. Did we get any more information about
- 33:01Speaker 1: what happened there? He's been pretty vocal, as you've seen
- 33:03Speaker 1: since he left the Mess to go to the Dodgers.
- 33:06Speaker 1: But I don't know if anyone asked him that one yet.
- 33:09Speaker 8: I don't know if Diaz has directly addressed it. It
- 33:11Speaker 8: was an ESPN report who had the Braves had a
- 33:15Speaker 8: five year offer out to DZ. I would assume the
- 33:17Speaker 8: AAV was probably not the twenty three million dollars that
- 33:20Speaker 8: he got from LA. And you know, if you look
- 33:22Speaker 8: at Diz in his age. Maybe he was looking for
- 33:25Speaker 8: somewhat of a shorter deal so then he can hit
- 33:27Speaker 8: the market one more time for a bigger contract. But
- 33:30Speaker 8: that was an eye raiser for sure. I know we
- 33:33Speaker 8: talked about it on Hammer Territory on our Brave show.
- 33:35Speaker 8: It was like, wow, they apparently it was just one report,
- 33:38Speaker 8: but apparently we're very serious about adding Diaz. And that
- 33:41Speaker 8: was after they had signed Iglesias and before they signed Suarez.
- 33:45Speaker 8: So it feels like they went for DZ and then
- 33:47Speaker 8: kind of struck out and then went for maybe the
- 33:49Speaker 8: next best thing on the market and added Robert Suarez,
- 33:52Speaker 8: who certainly has a long list on his baseball card
- 33:55Speaker 8: as well.
- 33:56Speaker 1: And then you know what came to mind, Scott. I
- 33:59Speaker 1: listened to the show as frequently as possible. I remember
- 34:03Speaker 1: the beginning of this season in twenty twenty five, this
- 34:06Speaker 1: past year, and the conversations about the bullpen usage in
- 34:10Speaker 1: the first week. And sure you can slice and dice
- 34:14Speaker 1: and be critical of Brian Snicker, but the AMMO that
- 34:18Speaker 1: he had at times was not the best. Who was it?
- 34:23Speaker 1: Gosh with the difficult name to pronounce on the front end,
- 34:27Speaker 1: The first name you'll know who I'm talking about. There
- 34:31Speaker 1: was a lot of debate about how to use him,
- 34:32Speaker 1: and I'm just like.
- 34:33Speaker 8: An yelle, yeah, on yell. Delos Santos was out there.
- 34:36Speaker 8: They had Rafael Montero, they picked up, they had I
- 34:40Speaker 8: mean Scott to give you an idea of where this
- 34:42Speaker 8: bullpen was, and no disrespect because this guy's had a
- 34:44Speaker 8: hell of a career, but Hector Naris threw a one
- 34:47Speaker 8: run ballgame on opening Day, on the seventh inning, and
- 34:51Speaker 8: it went very poorly. I think you saw five batters,
- 34:53Speaker 8: the Padres scored three runs, and he was out of
- 34:55Speaker 8: the game. So that was kind of the state of
- 34:58Speaker 8: this bullpen. It was just not good enough. And I
- 35:00Speaker 8: mean early on in the season, especially Atlanta could just
- 35:04Speaker 8: not win a close game.
- 35:06Speaker 1: This is a big difference from our conversation right now. Sure,
- 35:10Speaker 1: injuries can happen and things can change for guys, but damn,
- 35:13Speaker 1: what you just described sounds a lot better than not
- 35:16Speaker 1: mid season the first week of the season for Atlanta.
- 35:19Speaker 1: I think that part's important, since the first week was
- 35:24Speaker 1: kind of the end of the season. I don't want
- 35:26Speaker 1: to go that harsh, but man, they dug up a hole.
- 35:29Speaker 1: They never truly climbed out of it. They had their
- 35:31Speaker 1: moments in the second half, but anyway, good stuff. That's
- 35:34Speaker 1: why you got to listen to the show. They're dialed,
- 35:36Speaker 1: so Scott good catching up man. Appreciate it.
- 35:39Speaker 8: Yeah, thanks, guys, really enjoyed the show, and happy holidays
- 35:42Speaker 8: to you all.
- 35:42Speaker 1: In your families. Hey, we didn't get to this yet,
- 35:50Speaker 1: but I want to. I know you love that the
- 35:51Speaker 1: little PB and Jay homemade from Todd Father. But let's
- 35:54Speaker 1: start with our boy, Tyler Glass. Now we talked to
- 35:58Speaker 1: pretty frequently on the show, popped up in some trade rumors.
- 36:01Speaker 1: Tyler is a very straight shooter, as you can tell
- 36:03Speaker 1: on interviews. I mean, he tells it like it is.
- 36:06Speaker 1: That's why he's beloved. Sounds like he had a conversation
- 36:09Speaker 1: with the Dodgers and had the result that he was
- 36:11Speaker 1: looking for.
- 36:12Speaker 9: Seeing some rumors are I would get traded for him,
- 36:14Speaker 9: So it's like, I don't know what to believe. I've
- 36:16Speaker 9: talked to Andrew in my front office and they're like, no,
- 36:17Speaker 9: you're not You're not going anywhere. So they told me
- 36:20Speaker 9: I'm not going to get traded, and I trust them.
- 36:22Speaker 9: So that's obviously a nice feeling. I think to anytime
- 36:24Speaker 9: I do get like overwhelmed or stress at baseball, I
- 36:26Speaker 9: think sometimes it's nice to just be able to like
- 36:28Speaker 9: zoom out and be like, dude, what are you freaking
- 36:30Speaker 9: out about? Like you're literally living your dream playing in
- 36:32Speaker 9: Dodger stadiums.
- 36:35Speaker 1: So Tyler Glass Now, and that was on MLB Network Radio,
- 36:38Speaker 1: by the way, shout out to them for the interview.
- 36:40Speaker 1: But what do we think of Glass now? Just letting
- 36:44Speaker 1: everyone know I'm not being traded Todd Father. Things can happen,
- 36:49Speaker 1: but I will say there are many organizations that will
- 36:55Speaker 1: have a conversation like this and make sure that they
- 36:58Speaker 1: create an out if there's a real conversation going on
- 37:03Speaker 1: with other teams. Do you feel the same way. There's
- 37:06Speaker 1: some organizations or gms that don't give a fuck, but
- 37:09Speaker 1: there are many that say, hey, I'm respectful of a
- 37:12Speaker 1: guy that I signed to an extension. He's very vocal
- 37:14Speaker 1: in the media. If we feel like there's a little
- 37:17Speaker 1: bit of smoke, we'll tell him, hey, dude, there is
- 37:19Speaker 1: a chance, so you do with that what you want.
- 37:21Speaker 1: I mean, he might tell everyone that, or he might
- 37:23Speaker 1: not come out so strongly and say, hey, I'm not
- 37:25Speaker 1: getting traded. All of this is to say, I believe
- 37:30Speaker 1: Tyler getting the insight from the Dodgers that he is
- 37:33Speaker 1: not on the trade block.
- 37:36Speaker 5: I believe that too him and you're only My trust
- 37:39Speaker 5: goes by your word. And you know, if somebody in
- 37:42Speaker 5: the brass and the organization is going to tell me
- 37:44Speaker 5: I'm not getting traded, I'm gonna take that and be
- 37:47Speaker 5: happy with it, or said whatever that player wanted. But
- 37:52Speaker 5: as a player, you have every right to ask and
- 37:56Speaker 5: have a conversation with whomever you want in that organization.
- 37:59Speaker 5: It's your livelihood and the business part on the other
- 38:02Speaker 5: side too. You can be honest with him as of
- 38:04Speaker 5: right now, you're not getting traded. But you know, you
- 38:07Speaker 5: got to take the words and how they were played
- 38:09Speaker 5: in context, and you got to go with your gut
- 38:11Speaker 5: too as well. So to have a conversation with you know,
- 38:14Speaker 5: the GM or president or whatever it is about your future,
- 38:18Speaker 5: nothing wrong with that. Nothing wrong with that, And nobody
- 38:20Speaker 5: should take that as a good or bad thing. I mean,
- 38:23Speaker 5: for me, it's a good thing knowing that you care
- 38:26Speaker 5: and you you know, you want to know what's going on,
- 38:29Speaker 5: especially a guy that's been playing for a long time.
- 38:31Speaker 5: They have every single right to ask that question, and
- 38:33Speaker 5: I thought it was fair.
- 38:36Speaker 4: Gone of the days when I first got called up
- 38:39Speaker 4: or even first drafted, and GMS would walk through or
- 38:42Speaker 4: president of Baseball Operations would walk through the club ass
- 38:44Speaker 4: and you go, I hope he doesn't.
- 38:46Speaker 7: Talk to me. Did you see he just talked to Todd?
- 38:49Speaker 7: What's happening like?
- 38:50Speaker 4: Now they're more they're more accessible. Now they're willing to
- 38:54Speaker 4: take a phone call. Obviously, it's a little bit different
- 38:57Speaker 4: when you sign a guy to a four year, one
- 39:00Speaker 4: hundred and fourteen I think million dollar, one hundred and
- 39:02Speaker 4: fifteen million dollar extension. Let's put this way, the Dodgers
- 39:08Speaker 4: can easily come Yeah, today, you're not getting traded. If
- 39:11Speaker 4: somebody comes calling to the Dodgers and says, we would
- 39:15Speaker 4: love to have Tyler Glass now for the last two
- 39:17Speaker 4: years of his contract, even though he only made nineteen starts,
- 39:23Speaker 4: and before that, the year before that he made twenty
- 39:27Speaker 4: two starts. Year before that he made twenty one start.
- 39:30Speaker 4: So if somebody comes and says, yes, we would like
- 39:33Speaker 4: to trade for him, and it's the right package, I
- 39:36Speaker 4: believe that Andrew Friedman or whoever he called, you know,
- 39:38Speaker 4: wherever there's Gomes or Andrew Freeman, like they would call
- 39:42Speaker 4: him and be like, hey, so and so came came
- 39:44Speaker 4: asking about you. They have no right they have They
- 39:49Speaker 4: have no reason that they can't that they would need
- 39:51Speaker 4: to keep Glass now.
- 39:52Speaker 7: They have an.
- 39:54Speaker 4: Incredible amount of starting pitching, so if somebody comes asking
- 39:59Speaker 4: for you can still be traded just because they said no,
- 40:02Speaker 4: you're not being traded. That's the information they know today.
- 40:06Speaker 4: Once all these free agent pitchers are gone, maybe somebody says,
- 40:09Speaker 4: we'd love to have Tyler Glass now for twenty to
- 40:12Speaker 4: twenty five starts, and I think the Dodgers would do
- 40:14Speaker 4: something with us.
- 40:19Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 40:20Speaker 1: I think they want to roll with the same thing.
- 40:22Speaker 1: I think Glass now is super valuable and most valuable
- 40:25Speaker 1: to the Dodgers because they can handle him with enough
- 40:29Speaker 1: care to make sure that he is prepared for the postseason.
- 40:32Speaker 1: I know it wasn't done the year before, but they
- 40:35Speaker 1: did a nice job on that this year. I mean,
- 40:37Speaker 1: this is a guy who, you know, no secret, has
- 40:40Speaker 1: struggled to stay on the field to give consistent innings.
- 40:43Speaker 1: And you know what, Kratz, I think part of learning
- 40:46Speaker 1: how to best utilize your assets is that they're not
- 40:49Speaker 1: all the same. Tyler glasnow's not a two hundred inning pitcher.
- 40:52Speaker 1: If you want him to be a two hundred inning pitcher,
- 40:54Speaker 1: you're likely going to break the arm before you really
- 40:57Speaker 1: need it.
- 40:58Speaker 4: In October, if somebody comes asking for your pitcher, who
- 41:04Speaker 4: is probably right now, you're number four in a playoff rotation.
- 41:10Speaker 4: I'm just saying.
- 41:14Speaker 1: Four pitches like a one, and you pitch him in.
- 41:17Speaker 7: I'm not saying he doesn't.
- 41:18Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm telling you in the in the scope of
- 41:22Speaker 4: Tyler Glass now on another team is untradable. They will
- 41:26Speaker 4: not trade him because he needs to throw significant innings.
- 41:29Speaker 4: And I'm not saying he's not gonna throw significant innings
- 41:32Speaker 4: in the playoffs for your team. You just have to
- 41:35Speaker 4: realize on the scale of value, he is number four.
- 41:40Speaker 4: I think they have Blake Snell over him, obviously, Show
- 41:43Speaker 4: Hayes over him, and Yamamoto, they all some of their parts.
- 41:48Speaker 4: They all work together because Yamamoto can't throw. But once
- 41:52Speaker 4: every six days show Hey, they're gonna they're gonna make
- 41:56Speaker 4: sure he's probably on a six day rotation too, so
- 41:59Speaker 4: they fit in very well together.
- 42:01Speaker 7: I get that. But Tyler Glass now on.
- 42:05Speaker 4: His own out in an island nobody trades him because
- 42:09Speaker 4: of where he's at. If somebody comes and says, we
- 42:12Speaker 4: really want what you have and are willing to meet
- 42:15Speaker 4: the price prospects, you know, they don't care about cash.
- 42:18Speaker 4: But I think he could be available because he is
- 42:21Speaker 4: a valuable pitcher that will help a team win playoff games,
- 42:27Speaker 4: because that, to me, that's where his superpower is. You
- 42:30Speaker 4: bring that in in the playoffs and you're you're talking
- 42:32Speaker 4: about ten punchies.
- 42:33Speaker 7: In a five inning, five inning outing in the playoffs.
- 42:37Speaker 1: Right, and then you have people bringing up the schoogle aspect. Oh,
- 42:41Speaker 1: if they trade for him, then maybe he trade Classter
- 42:44Speaker 1: or maybe Classner even goes back in a deal to Detroit.
- 42:47Speaker 1: Here Schumacher one ninety. Why trade for Glass now? When
- 42:50Speaker 1: Ranger Suarez is a free agent. Their numbers are very
- 42:52Speaker 1: come pro Bowl just just like I said more and
- 42:58Speaker 1: I guess they're a little bit similar on not being
- 43:03Speaker 1: two hundred in guys, Rangers Farrez has had some injuries, crafts,
- 43:06Speaker 1: you can speak well to him, you watch him a
- 43:07Speaker 1: lot when he's pitching for Philly. But I mean some
- 43:13Speaker 1: teams are gonna value Glass now higher, and some teams
- 43:17Speaker 1: are gonna value Suarez higher, and they're also going to
- 43:19Speaker 1: look at what the rate is. I don't know what
- 43:20Speaker 1: Suarz is gonna end up getting. He's probably gonna get
- 43:22Speaker 1: more than what Glass Now is oh the rest of.
- 43:24Speaker 4: The way, overall the life of the contract.
- 43:29Speaker 7: Yeah, but not AAV.
- 43:30Speaker 4: He won't get as much as Glass now is getting.
- 43:33Speaker 4: I think he's let's see twenty five twenty nine million,
- 43:38Speaker 4: I think he's getting I'm not sure that math. That
- 43:41Speaker 4: math doesn't math right now, but anyway, probably not AV.
- 43:45Speaker 4: But why wouldn't you. It's exactly the same reason I said,
- 43:49Speaker 4: Once these free agent pitchers are gone, teams are going
- 43:52Speaker 4: to be like, wait a minute, I still do want
- 43:55Speaker 4: to make the playoffs. And there's a very few of
- 43:57Speaker 4: them that won't have made a move and that want
- 44:00Speaker 4: to make the playoffs. But he has value and some
- 44:05Speaker 4: teams might see that value there. I'm not saying like
- 44:07Speaker 4: a team that tries to go after Ranger Suarez is
- 44:11Speaker 4: going to look up and a ton of teams analytically
- 44:15Speaker 4: look at don't look necessarily at what Ranger Suarez's production
- 44:19Speaker 4: is and what Tyler Glassnow's production is. It's more of
- 44:23Speaker 4: the stuff whoa We're enamored by the super shiny car.
- 44:29Speaker 4: No matter what the actual speed of the car is,
- 44:32Speaker 4: We're enamored by the super shiny car. The fact that
- 44:35Speaker 4: Tyler Glass now could go out and dominate on any
- 44:39Speaker 4: given night. And I think Ranger Squarz is a great
- 44:42Speaker 4: option also. But once those guys are off the list,
- 44:45Speaker 4: now we start thinking about, well, maybe we need we
- 44:47Speaker 4: need one more guy? Like does it like do the Orioles?
- 44:50Speaker 4: If the price was more palatable, would the Orioles want
- 44:54Speaker 4: to trade for him? Will the Orioles want to add
- 44:56Speaker 4: him to their rotation? Yes, if they think they're on
- 44:59Speaker 4: the doorstep of winning playoff series and not just making
- 45:02Speaker 4: playoff series, Yes, they would want to trade.
- 45:04Speaker 1: For You want a shiny car, I'll give you one
- 45:09Speaker 1: more for spreading rumors. John hamon tweeting about Mason Miller.
- 45:15Speaker 1: Many teams, including the Mets, are inquiring on Mason Miller,
- 45:19Speaker 1: one of the top few arms in MLB and the
- 45:22Speaker 1: hardest thrower. The Padres will listen, but they love him
- 45:24Speaker 1: as much as anyone and would need to be overwhelmed.
- 45:27Speaker 1: Craft will start with you just because you were on
- 45:29Speaker 1: with us yesterday and when we spoke to Ken Rosenthal
- 45:31Speaker 1: about the Padres, and then Todd Father can piggyback off
- 45:35Speaker 1: what you learned from Ken yesterday and combo that with
- 45:38Speaker 1: John Hayman's word. I mean, it's really cute and nice
- 45:41Speaker 1: to be interested in someone is their world. That creates
- 45:44Speaker 1: this lane for the Padres to trade him. I mean,
- 45:48Speaker 1: like any GM says, blow me away, right, if they
- 45:53Speaker 1: get a better offer than what they gave away from
- 45:56Speaker 1: Mason Miller last year, Plus it enables them to backfill
- 46:00Speaker 1: some needs within their current ball club. Sure, but.
- 46:06Speaker 10: I mean you could see it like you could see
- 46:08Speaker 10: the mega package and make it hurt. The Padres did
- 46:11Speaker 10: that last year, right, They gave up a prospect who
- 46:15Speaker 10: could end up being the top prospect in the sport.
- 46:18Speaker 10: You know within a year or so from now that
- 46:20Speaker 10: the A's will get to enjoy.
- 46:21Speaker 1: But I have a hard time seeing this as the
- 46:27Speaker 1: move that they make. If they're going to do something,
- 46:30Speaker 1: they're going to try and clear payroll. Mason Miller's not
- 46:33Speaker 1: making that much money yet.
- 46:36Speaker 4: And that's why, you know, unless you're saying, okay, the
- 46:38Speaker 4: Mets will take on Xander Baulgart's and they throw in
- 46:42Speaker 4: you know, they'll take all of Xander's contract and they
- 46:45Speaker 4: throw in Mason Miller like that is like that's bizarro
- 46:49Speaker 4: world to me. I just don't think. I don't see
- 46:52Speaker 4: something like that. You know, we obviously know that Tatis
- 46:55Speaker 4: is not available. We know that, or we think that
- 46:59Speaker 4: Machado not available. So do the Mets say, Xander, you're
- 47:05Speaker 4: gonna go play third base like you did when you
- 47:07Speaker 4: were nineteen years old and help the Red Sox win
- 47:09Speaker 4: a World Series?
- 47:10Speaker 7: Or is it something that.
- 47:12Speaker 4: Of course everybody wants Mason Miller. Everybody ever since he
- 47:15Speaker 4: started throwing a billion miles an hour, everyone said.
- 47:18Speaker 7: Ooh, you know you're really they're leaning towards Mason Miller.
- 47:21Speaker 4: The Padres got him, The Padres paid a steep price
- 47:25Speaker 4: for him, and they're not getting rid of him. It's
- 47:27Speaker 4: why they didn't have to go and resign Robert Suarez.
- 47:31Speaker 4: He's part of this still elite bullpen that they've constructed
- 47:36Speaker 4: at a low price. Jeremiah Strata and Mason Miller are
- 47:40Speaker 4: making nothing encloser and set up guy Dollars. Even if
- 47:45Speaker 4: Major League Baseball has colluded. To me, it's Mason Miller,
- 47:50Speaker 4: you know, stop just stop. Of course you're intrigued about him.
- 47:54Speaker 4: He throws one hundred and four miles an hour, and
- 47:57Speaker 4: there's rumors that he wants to or they could start. Yes,
- 48:00Speaker 4: you want to see one hundred and four mile an
- 48:02Speaker 4: hour starter, but stop. The Mets aren't getting the Mets,
- 48:05Speaker 4: andres aren't getting rid of them unless you're taking on
- 48:08Speaker 4: the contract that they deem the worst. And I'm saying
- 48:11Speaker 4: they would deem the Xander Bogart's contract as the worst.
- 48:15Speaker 7: But I still think he has value to that team.
- 48:17Speaker 1: I don't. I don't think a lot of people saw
- 48:19Speaker 1: this coming Todd father from last year's trade deadline, that
- 48:24Speaker 1: Mason Miller would be done. Maybe we were naive because
- 48:26Speaker 1: it's the A's, but I don't think a lot of
- 48:28Speaker 1: people saw him being traded.
- 48:31Speaker 5: No, I mean, who would trade this guy. He's He's
- 48:33Speaker 5: one of the best closers and relievers in baseball. It
- 48:35Speaker 5: throws the hardest. Any team should be on his tail
- 48:39Speaker 5: if there's an opportunity to put them on their squad.
