- 0:15Hello and welcome to Arguing Ever After.
- 0:17I am Luke and this is my redheaded Irish bride, Amber.
- 0:22Hello. Together we're the Lord and Lady
- 0:25who lock horns. The counting Countess of
- 0:27contention. The Duke and Duchess of
- 0:29Disagreement. And the king and queen of
- 0:31quarrels. In this podcast, we bicker about
- 0:35all things big and small, and the audience vote determines who
- 0:39the winner is. Many of our topics are
- 0:42frequently submitted by our listeners, which we do like, so
- 0:45please send us your topics if you want us to argue about them
- 0:48to arguingeverafter@gmail.com. Yeah, please do.
- 0:52We could use some topics. Yep, always.
- 0:55Always. We do still have like 100 but.
- 0:57We do, but you know, I'd, I'd like to know what you're
- 1:00fighting about in your own house.
- 1:02Oh yes please. That would be really fun to,
- 1:04wouldn't it be, to have us fight about it because I promise we
- 1:08can and I'm going to get rid of this pen.
- 1:10I I have a thing with Clicky. Pens give her anything that.
- 1:13Clicks people. I apologize if you heard my 2
- 1:16second. It's just the end of the world,
- 1:18the clicking. Yeah, it's not fair to others.
- 1:21Now, I will give a little disclaimer.
- 1:23At the beginning of this episode, we needed to take our
- 1:27furry canine family members into the recording area.
- 1:34So if you hear any growling or snapping or see one of them buzz
- 1:38across the screen, hopefully that doesn't happen because that
- 1:41would be painful for both of us. That's that's what's going on in
- 1:45the background. If you don't hear it, great.
- 1:46Yeah, yeah. Hopefully they'll just chill out
- 1:49while we record. But.
- 1:50I doubt it. They're very used to having
- 1:53whatever space they want to play and and whatever sounds they
- 1:58want to do with that. So OK, it would.
- 2:02Be kind of fun though with the gremlin Y sounds of the puppy.
- 2:04Yeah, she makes some wild noises.
- 2:08Yeah, she's pretty aggressive too.
- 2:10Like she'll be biting him and barking at him.
- 2:13Like how dare you? I don't know, it's interesting.
- 2:17But they love each other. So the dog update is they're
- 2:20doing well. Yes, they are.
- 2:22And they're loving each other and they love the play time,
- 2:26which, you know, that's why we got a second one was for our
- 2:29first one to have a good friend. Yep.
- 2:32And that has happened. Yes, it has.
- 2:35OK, we are on our 36th episode. Nice.
- 2:39Yeah, Yeah, that's a good number.
- 2:41I like 36. It's halfway to 72.
- 2:45Sure, sure. 36 months in a year. What I mean?
- 2:5036 months. In three years.
- 2:53Sorry, my brain said. What 36 months A.
- 2:55Mouth three years, my mouth, I just I disclaimed my mouth 30.
- 2:59Six months in a. Year my brain said other words
- 3:02yeah than my mouth. They disagreed.
- 3:04Well, and I thought you were meaning weeks, and I was.
- 3:06Going to say no, that's 52. It is 52.
- 3:09Yeah, I meant 36 weeks in three years.
- 3:11OK. 70. Two months?
- 3:13Oh, you didn't is your you meant 36 months.
- 3:15To traditional car loan 72 months.
- 3:20Half traditional. Now, yeah. 72 months.
- 3:24That's the norm now and the normal payment is.
- 3:28I don't even want to talk about it, it's way too high.
- 3:30It's disgusting, it's disgusting.
- 3:31I don't want to think about it, but that's the way it goes.
- 3:34Things cost more as you go, you know?
- 3:36It doesn't cost more. What?
- 3:38Our podcast? Hey.
- 3:40For the listeners. It's free for you.
- 3:43It is free for you and it's pretty close to free for us.
- 3:46That's right. What we've been trying to and
- 3:49hopefully so. Far.
- 3:50Mission accomplished. Yeah, hopefully continue down
- 3:52that. That's right.
- 3:54But you know where else it's free?
- 3:57Where's it free? It's free in Spain.
- 4:00Aw, we picked up a new country, people.
- 4:03We did, and I would have never, never have guessed that we would
- 4:07have picked up Spain so soon. We're expanding into the EU.
- 4:11We got UK. Yeah, we got Germany.
- 4:15We got well, Russia's not new. I get Germany though.
- 4:18We actually. Did we get a Ukraine?
- 4:20Yes, we did. Yes, we did.
- 4:22Did we get like a like a Denmark?
- 4:25No, I don't think so. No, no.
- 4:29But we did get the we did get Ukraine.
- 4:31Holland. Did we get Holland?
- 4:32No, AKA the Netherlands. No, no.
- 4:36OK, Australia is not part of the EU either.
- 4:38So they still have time. They have time.
- 4:40They have time to. We're expanding though.
- 4:42Yeah, I'm willing and. Maybe Spain can bring its
- 4:45neighbors. I think they would.
- 4:46Well, I think they will. That's good.
- 4:49Go knock on some doors, Spain. Tell them.
- 4:51Say hey, Portugal, we almost speak the same language.
- 4:55Let's get this going. I think our most recent country
- 4:59did let their their original. No, not quite that.
- 5:04I think let one of their country brethren know, right could be
- 5:10They probably heard your wonderful hello and said I want
- 5:13to hear it with a Spanish. Not that don't mix the two up
- 5:19because it's so different. I got to hear it.
- 5:21Here we go. Are you ready?
- 5:22It's very different than when I said the last one.
- 5:25Hola. Oh, OK, can you now say it the
- 5:29other way too? Hola.
- 5:32OK. Did you hear the difference
- 5:33there? Very different one.
- 5:34More time. Let's hear now.
- 5:37Now let's mix it up for them. The Chile version.
- 5:40The Chilean version. OK, here we go.
- 5:42Yes, Hola. OK, and now the Spanish version.
- 5:46Hola. OK, there you go.
- 5:48Very different. Yes, yes.
- 5:51Oh, you're all well versed. Yes, you take yourself a little
- 5:53trip. Right, right.
- 5:55Say it the right way. You've got one word and at two
- 5:58countries that you're ready to go unless you're.
- 6:01I'm ready to go to either one myself.
- 6:03I yeah, I haven't been to either.
- 6:05I think I'd pick Spain though. Yeah.
- 6:08Older. I'm into the old stuff.
- 6:10I mean, I bet it's also just as old.
- 6:13Well, no, given that the Spanish are the ones that came over to
- 6:16the New world in Spain is like, OK, well my point is that I'm
- 6:23wrong. My point is that the world all
- 6:26was created at one time. Oh, I see.
- 6:29Yeah, I feel like. Is that how it works?
- 6:32Just as old and I feel like the dirt in Chile and the dirt in
- 6:38Spain. So would you say that the
- 6:39English speaking people in America are the same as I don't
- 6:42know the English? No, because this.
- 6:44Is different. There, there's a difference.
- 6:46You were talking about places, not people.
- 6:48Let's get the difference going. OK, a place is somewhere you can
- 6:53go to. Yeah.
- 6:55Person is somebody you. Thank.
- 6:59You. You can't.
- 7:00I mean, I guess you I. Feel like our listeners are
- 7:02super excited that they're learning all these new.
- 7:05Things they're learning so much. Today, so much is happening.
- 7:08So, so, so much. And that's what we're here for.
- 7:13We're here to teach what we know.
- 7:14And I, I think they've learned that there's 36 months in a year
- 7:20and the very differing answers of how to say hello in different
- 7:28Spanish speaking. That's right, I could do it more
- 7:31times if we get some more Spanish speaking countries.
- 7:33I I want to hear it. Yeah.
- 7:34And we'll. We need to get there, though.
- 7:36We got to we'll. Track them all.
- 7:38If and, then we can do. We can do multi presentations,
- 7:42we can stack them up. Yeah.
- 7:44Well, and I would be, I would be ready for that.
- 7:47You know, I'm kind of seeing in here, I thought for sure we
- 7:50would have had our neighbors to the South.
- 7:53Don't have Mexico yet? No, we don't.
- 7:55And we know people in Mexico. So I think that maybe a link
- 7:59will be sent specifically. Yeah, we should probably send
- 8:01out some stuff. Yeah, yeah.
- 8:04I mean we we have some friends who are spend a good portion.
- 8:08And you know what? They'd probably like to hear our
- 8:10voices. I know they would.
- 8:12I know, let's give them, let's give them a little.
- 8:14Yeah, give them a call. Give them a call and then they
- 8:16can share it with their friends down there.
- 8:18Yes, you know, 'cause there's a lot of.
- 8:20We have more than one friend. We do.
- 8:23I'd say we have at least three. Yeah.
- 8:26And which is a lot. That's a lot.
- 8:28You know what? That's a lot.
- 8:30That's more than some people, and I'm OK with that, I think.
- 8:35Oh, So what I did want to talk about, though, is what we
- 8:38haven't gotten yet. Because whenever we do that, we
- 8:42get some right. And today, very importantly,
- 8:47we're in March and in, in my, in our household, we celebrate the
- 8:52holidays, not all of the holidays, but a lot of holidays.
- 8:57And one of the holidays that we celebrate in March every year is
- 9:03Saint Patrick's Day. And given that, I was really
- 9:09hoping that I had forgotten that someone from Ireland had
- 9:13listened and it hasn't happened yet.
- 9:17So I'm putting it out. I'm putting it out there because
- 9:19I think we. Also have a friendish that goes
- 9:23there often. I know.
- 9:24Who's from there? Who's from Ireland?
- 9:27That's right, yeah. I think she needs to bring it
- 9:29with on her next trip. So I think that that that's a
- 9:34doable thing. But, but that's one of the
- 9:37things we're doing right now is we're, we're getting ready for
- 9:40Saint Patrick's Day, which is kind of big in, in Saint Paul,
- 9:45but also kind of big everywhere. I was listening today to a
- 9:51couple of podcasts, as I do, you know, and it was maybe in
- 9:56preparation for this, but also I like to learn so that I can
- 10:00teach others. Oh good, I love the educator in
- 10:03you. I.
- 10:05I do. Such a big part of me and but
- 10:12anyhow, so I was learning that not only, you know, do we
- 10:15celebrate it here in the US and they celebrate it in Ireland,
- 10:19but it's celebrated all over the world.
- 10:22Yeah, I bet it is. And that parades all over the
- 10:24world. Do you want to know where?
- 10:26I think it might be celebrated pretty strongly.
- 10:28Where? Argentina.
- 10:30Really. Why?
- 10:31I'm making that up, but let me tell you why.
- 10:36Remember when we said we would teach you things?
- 10:38Also, we will lie to you. It might not be the truth.
- 10:42In honor of Saint Patrick's Day, we will have some blarney here
- 10:47on our show. Good old Blarney Stone.
- 10:49Yes, yes, OK. How?
- 10:50Come, we don't have a Blarney Stone.
- 10:52We did. What happened to it?
- 10:54I don't know, but we definitely had a Blarney stone.
- 10:57I'm upset. Maybe we left it at our last
- 10:59house. No way, that's super bad.
- 11:01There's no way. We definitely had a blarney
- 11:03stone. Well, we ought to get another
- 11:06one because I don't know where it is anyway.
- 11:08So Argentina either has or had a large Irish community that
- 11:18intermingled with the locals. Not surprised there are.
- 11:24And yeah, that's why a lot of people in Argentina have red
- 11:27hair or red beards. I didn't know that either of
- 11:30those things. Now you know both, at least to
- 11:32see I taught you a couple things.
- 11:34You did. You did, but there are more
- 11:37people of Irish descent outside of Ireland than there are inside
- 11:41of Ireland. Cause the Irish are strong.
- 11:44Well, because of the, you know, having to leave with potato.
- 11:48I thought you were going to say having so many children.
- 11:53No, but there's, you know, it's, it's, it's a little island,
- 11:56right? That's true.
- 11:57So many people, and lots of people left their homeland and
- 12:02went about and out into the. World.
- 12:06Well, OK, gosh, I mean, I think that was, see, I didn't do that
- 12:11research as far as the year when it all started, but I want to
- 12:15say if I remember the movie Far and Away with Nicole Kidman and
- 12:19Tom Cruise. Which is most of our facts are
- 12:23based on movie history, which is almost like facts.
- 12:27I feel like that was sometime in the late 1800s, mid 1800s.
- 12:32I would say early to mid. Yeah, OK, in far and Away, but
- 12:36people were coming over like the 18 teens to 18.
- 12:42Sure. 50s and. Even earlier, though.
- 12:46Well, yes you did. And if I remember another movie.
- 12:51There we go. What?
- 12:52And what's another one? Another movie, kind of
- 12:55controversial, but it was Gone with the Wind and.
- 13:00Oh, I thought you're going to say Gangs of New York?
- 13:01I was like, what's controversial?
- 13:03Nothing. Nothing.
- 13:03There's probably controversy in that too, but.
- 13:06Scarlett O'hara's family, OK, you know her.
- 13:09Her pappy was from Ireland. Scarlett O'Hara is.
- 13:14That's a very Irish setup. There it is.
- 13:18It is, yeah. Yes, I don't remember his name
- 13:20but anyhow. Also so that would be pre civil
- 13:22war. That rhymes with your great
- 13:24grandparents last name. Well, yes, yes, there's a lot of
- 13:27OS. O Mara.
- 13:30Yeah, and there's actually a whole bunch of history there
- 13:33that I don't have too much on about the clans and all of that.
- 13:37But you know, like a lot of them are kind of interrelated.
- 13:41I don't know, don't ask. Me.
- 13:42Well, you did say it was a small island, so.
- 13:44Well, that kind of makes sense. It would.
- 13:46Stand to reason that they were interrelated.
- 13:49I guess size is relative, but you want to know what else?
- 13:53Another movie fact. That.
- 13:56Has to do with Ireland. OK is this movie comes up every
- 14:00once in a while in our podcast. OK, that the Cliffs of Insanity
- 14:05from The Princess Bride are actually cliffs in Ireland.
- 14:12You mean? OK, wait, do you mean that's
- 14:15where they were filmed was in Ireland, yes.
- 14:19Or do you mean in Ireland? There is a place that is called
- 14:23the Cliffs of Insanity. No, they call it something
- 14:26different. And I did actually hear about
- 14:29that today and I heard the term and I was like, I've definitely
- 14:32heard of those cliffs, but they're better known as the
- 14:34Cliffs of Insanity, which take a giant to to ascend or a masked
- 14:43man in black. Only two ways you get up those
- 14:46cliffs of insanity, so. The Dread Pirate.
- 14:48I mean, yes, that's the only two way.
- 14:50But anyhow, my sister and her family had gone to Ireland and
- 14:53saw that. I think we talked about seeing
- 14:56it. So it's one of those things that
- 14:58I would have, I would have done as well if I was there.
- 15:01I'd say, Oh my gosh. Got to see it.
- 15:03Got to see it. Got to see it if I'm there.
- 15:07I mean, if I were to be near, well, I don't know of other
- 15:11spots in that movie, but you know, I if I was near the fire
- 15:14swamp, I'd have to go and. Go into the fire swamp.
- 15:18Yeah, have to see about ROUSS and one day I think do.
- 15:21You know how many people don't know what you're talking about,
- 15:23right? Now I'm so sad for all of.
- 15:25You I know they're missing out. If you haven't seen The Princess
- 15:28Bride. There's probably a lot of people
- 15:30can remember it was really a a bomb.
- 15:32No, I mean no. It really was.
- 15:34It got its fame after it came out on VHS and developed its
- 15:40cult following, and it still has that and there are millions of
- 15:43fans across the globe. I mean.
- 15:45But it wasn't like a big deal when it came.
- 15:47It is now a big deal. It sure is.
- 15:49And one day this is not that day.
- 15:52So I don't want to go too far down this road, But one day we
- 15:56will have a podcast somehow revolving around The Princess
- 16:00Bride episode. Not podcast.
- 16:03OK. I was going to say, that's a lot
- 16:05of a commitment to. But maybe if we did, Kerry would
- 16:10like. Do you wanna talk about an Irish
- 16:12movie for a second? I do.
- 16:14That I really wanna see. So I don't know anything about.
- 16:20I think it won an. Award more fact.
- 16:21It's called the Banshees of Inner Sharon.
- 16:24I've heard of this movie, but I don't.
- 16:26Think it won like a best something actor but I don't
- 16:30know. It has the I can't remember his
- 16:32name now. It did that thing to Irish guy
- 16:35that's in all the Irish movies and he was in the game.
- 16:38Nope, that one too though and the the guy with the red beard
- 16:42and he fights everyone and he saw he was in he was well.
- 16:47A red fighting guy? Are you thinking of that mascot?
- 16:52I don't think he's actually in a no.
- 16:54I think he just represents whatever sports team he
- 16:57represents. The Fighting Irish there.
- 16:59Wow. Of Notre Dame.
- 17:03Well, anyways, I really want to see the movie because it was
- 17:07supposed to have been really good.
- 17:09Is it about banshees or is it like they're?
- 17:11I haven't seen the movie. I wish I could tell you more.
- 17:14Maybe we could watch it together.
- 17:15Maybe you'll stay awake. I always find that disappointing
- 17:18when movies will have a title and it won't be what's in the
- 17:21title. I really do.
- 17:23Because it could be there could there could be banshees.
- 17:26Do you know what a banshee is a type of?
- 17:28I do, I do do. You a fairy?
- 17:32Oh, I guess I, I mean, OK, OK, I'll trust you because I feel
- 17:39like you might have done a little bit of research.
- 17:41On it, just a little. Bit Tang a wee bit.
- 17:43Just a Oh boy. Yeah, yeah.
- 17:46You're welcome, audience. You're welcome.
- 17:48I hope we get as much of this out of your system as we can.
- 17:52I cannot. I cannot.
- 17:54I just, I I love a good pun, and I know that there's at least one
- 17:59other person who appreciates them.
- 18:00I appreciate them almost every time.
- 18:03And I am certain they're related to me.
- 18:05That's also true. Yeah, yeah.
- 18:07Now, people that are related to you in Irish traditions, can we
- 18:11just talk about a couple of things?
- 18:13Sure, in the family. More than happy.
- 18:15To OK, why don't you just just open up like a book, Tell, tell
- 18:18the people, oh, gosh, we could start.
- 18:20Can we start with what I'm excited about this weekend
- 18:23coming up? The green meal.
- 18:25Yeah. Which is a tradition that I had
- 18:29no idea was a thing. It might not be a thing in
- 18:32anyone's family except your family.
- 18:34It is a thing in my family. And I was introduced to this
- 18:40when we started dating a long, long while ago.
- 18:44Yeah. And you were having whatever
- 18:47this was the green meal. And I was invited over.
- 18:49And I thought, well, it's food, so I'm gonna go.
- 18:53Yeah. And I went.
- 18:55Did I warn you at all? Not enough.
- 18:57OK. Not enough, you said.
- 18:59You know, it's like, it's like a regular dinner, but you know,
- 19:02the some of the food's green. Well.
- 19:04And so then I went and all the food was green.
- 19:07All of the food is green. And the milk was green.
- 19:10Yep, the milk. That was a bit terrifying.
- 19:13And the other drink is green, like fruit punch or something.
- 19:19Probably something like that sometimes.
- 19:21And there's like, everything is green.
- 19:23The, the bread. The bread's green.
- 19:25Yeah, the potatoes are green. Yes.
- 19:28The chicken is green. Yes.
- 19:33There's green stuff naturally. I feel like there's either peas
- 19:36or beans or something that are already green.
- 19:38Yep, Yep, Yep. There's not a thing that isn't
- 19:41green. The butter.
- 19:43The butter isn't green, but when you put the butter into green
- 19:46bread, it just turns into the green bread.
- 19:49It just makes it look shiny. And I was so taken aback by the
- 19:53level of green attitude in your family's Irish tradition that I
- 19:57was both terrified and enthralled at the same time.
- 20:03So here's the thing about Saint Patrick's Day.
- 20:05Everybody's Irish on Saint Patrick's Day if they want to
- 20:09be. And this tradition was not
- 20:11started by an Irish person, started by my mother, who is not
- 20:17Irish at all, but she did start dying food green.
- 20:21And I don't know the entire reason for it.
- 20:24My guess is it was just something fun, but we don't eat
- 20:30the traditional. Soda bread.
- 20:33I mean, we've had soda bread, but we don't eat the
- 20:35traditional. Soda bread.
- 20:37We don't eat the traditional like.
- 20:39Thanks, Aunt Jeanine. Corned beef meal It's it's and
- 20:44as a kid I was very grateful for that because I would have been
- 20:47disgusting to me as a kid and kind of still to me today.
- 20:53So while I know this might sound thoroughly horrifying for folks,
- 20:58yes, this is a thing we do in my family every year for Saint
- 21:03Patrick's Day. Not always on Saint Patrick's
- 21:05Day, because we have to do it on the.
- 21:08It's not a national holiday yet. Well, it's not a holiday where
- 21:12you get time off. I think it is a national
- 21:14holiday. It's just not a.
- 21:16Government recognized like. Time off holiday, but that's I
- 21:22don't know. Yeah, I don't know if it ever
- 21:25will be, but. It could be.
- 21:27It could be anything's possible. People do like it and and I know
- 21:32there are people most, this will be the first year in a decade
- 21:39where I will be working it and not going to the parade.
- 21:43Do you feel bad? A little, you know, I didn't at
- 21:46first, 'cause the reason I wasn't going to go to the parade
- 21:48was because, like, well, you'd had surgery and y'all who aren't
- 21:54in Minnesota March. In Minnesota, it's cold. 90% of
- 21:58the time it's cold. We're legitimately supposed to
- 22:01get a foot of snow. Yeah, two days before Saint
- 22:05Patrick's Day. Yeah, so it's cold and then it's
- 22:07a parade, right? What do you do at a parade?
- 22:09You sit on the curb of the streets.
- 22:11Yeah, so. People bring blankets and.
- 22:15Cold and windy, those are two things.
- 22:18Almost always. There's been a couple where it
- 22:20wasn't that cold if you sat in the sun.
- 22:23But anyhow, so I was, I was feeling fine about it.
- 22:27And then people, we have this work meeting and there were
- 22:30people like, oh man, on Saint Patrick's Day I'm like, why did
- 22:34I not take Saint Patrick's Day off this year?
- 22:36Cause 'cause the part of me that, you know, kind of doesn't
- 22:39necessarily think about it in February or January is not the
- 22:45same part of me on March 17th. That person is a person who's
- 22:50like, yeah. Are you saying we need to put in
- 22:53a time off request? I can't.
- 22:55It doesn't matter. Too late, ship sailed.
- 22:57Yeah, it for me, it really truly has, but like that's it's one of
- 23:02those things I I enjoy wearing. I mean, I can wear I have to
- 23:06wear green. There's not a choice in wearing
- 23:08green the. Wear another green.
- 23:09Patrick's Day as a kid growing up, you were asking about
- 23:13traditions. We could not leave the house
- 23:17without wearing something that had green on it.
- 23:20That's right. And sometimes it would be some
- 23:23lame button that my dad had because he'd be like, I don't
- 23:27have green, you have to wear green.
- 23:29Like, here's 800 different green things I have.
- 23:32And of course, who wants to wear their dad's clothes?
- 23:34I certainly didn't. And so I'd have like a button
- 23:38and it would be really something kind of cringy to wear as like a
- 23:41kid. Like kiss me.
- 23:42I'm Irish and I don't want anyone to kiss me.
- 23:44I, you know, but also if you don't, anybody apparently can
- 23:50just pinch you for no reason. And I don't want to consent to
- 23:53being pinched if I'm not wearing green.
- 23:55I'd rather get kissed probably than pinched.
- 23:58Yeah, I don't know. I mean, luckily.
- 24:00Not on the mouth though. No one, no one took me up on
- 24:03that button when I was in school.
- 24:05So I, I, I'm OK with that, but I don't know, I might have, you
- 24:11know, being honest to my, my sainted father.
- 24:14I'm sure there's been some sort of a miracle that's happened
- 24:18that can be not attributed to his death.
- 24:20But I'm sure since he has passed, I have to say this now,
- 24:25and I'm sure he's listening. I probably put that button in my
- 24:31backpack now. I probably.
- 24:34Didn't keep it on. So out of the guilt, the good
- 24:38guilt that a lot of us suffer, I cannot go a Saint Patrick's Day
- 24:42without wearing green. Even if no one sees me, I must
- 24:45wear green. I also wear green every Saint
- 24:47Patrick's Day. Really important.
- 24:49It's important all over the world people wear green.
- 24:51There's a song about it. Well, and that was part of it.
- 24:55When people expanded out into the world because they had to
- 24:58leave Ireland, they wore the green because it reminded them
- 25:01of their homeland, kept, you know, some of that sentiment
- 25:05together and also help them identify themselves to each
- 25:07other, you know, which is interesting.
- 25:11The interesting part of it is we associate green with Saint
- 25:16Patrick's Day here in many places.
- 25:21But that is not the traditional color for Saint Patrick, OK?
- 25:28His color that had been originally associated with him,
- 25:31OK, was blue. Yeah, Yeah.
- 25:35I'm taken aback. I was too, but the green is
- 25:39because it's so lush in Ireland and you know all of those
- 25:42things. It's to represent that.
- 25:44So I learned a few things today about the Saint Patrick.
- 25:49Are you interested in learning anything about I am?
- 25:51Saint Patrick there's I bet there's a whole debate as to
- 25:54whether or not he should be a St.
- 25:56No, I don't think that's debated.
- 25:57No, that's not how Saints work. No.
- 26:02Well, I don't know. However, I'm sure you know not
- 26:09Irish. Right, he was Roman.
- 26:14He was kidnapped and brought to Ireland.
- 26:17By the Romans. No, by pirates, pirates, Irish
- 26:21pirates, according to the folklore I heard and learned
- 26:26today. And he was a slave in Ireland.
- 26:29So he did his time in Ireland as a slave and then at some point
- 26:32he escaped. But he had had a dream that he
- 26:36had to go back to Ireland and save all of those lawless
- 26:39people, right? Which you can kind of
- 26:40understand, like if you were a someone slave, you know, you
- 26:45might think that they're lawless or need some changing, you know,
- 26:48or the people who were you were around in the area.
- 26:50So that was what he did. He came back to Ireland to save
- 26:54them and spread the word of Christianity and he would take
- 26:58the Shamrock and explain the Shamrock and.
- 27:03And that's how he. Supposedly this is not
- 27:06necessarily true, but the. Rock was a sham.
- 27:10Yes, yes. But you know, I mean this, this
- 27:13is contested, but is that where the?
- 27:15Blarney Stone comes from that was solid.
- 27:22Oh, there. We go, but he never.
- 27:24Given any credit? It.
- 27:27Wasn't that good, but Shamrock Blarney Stone.
- 27:30Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, that's pretty good, Pretty
- 27:32good. It's not even that loose of an
- 27:34association. OK, so but what he did was he
- 27:38used, according to legend, he used the Shamrock to explain the
- 27:44Holy Trinity and that's why that's a sign of wait.
- 27:48Trinity. Why is 3 that's?
- 27:49Why is the 4 leaf Clover lucky then?
- 27:52You know, I did not go down the road of why is A4 leaf Clover
- 27:55extra lucky to a Shamrock. I don't know where that comes
- 27:59in, however Interesting. I've certainly looked for four
- 28:03leaf clovers and found them. Yeah, they're not that common.
- 28:07They're not that common, but they can be found.
- 28:09They can, sure. They can be found easily So.
- 28:13So anyhow, that's Saint Patrick. And now the celebrating and the
- 28:20continued celebration was obviously very religious.
- 28:26And on Saint Patrick's Day, it would be like the middle of
- 28:30Lent. And so how people celebrated it,
- 28:36it was like that's the one day that you can, you don't have the
- 28:39Lenten restrictions and you do whatever you want and then go
- 28:43and go to church, do all of that.
- 28:44So it was a very religious holiday here.
- 28:49Just in Ireland they got a break from Lent.
- 28:51Well, if you were celebrating Catholic, you got a break from
- 28:56Lent if you were celebrating Saint Patrick's Day.
- 29:00But it was definitely honored in Ireland.
- 29:03Many but, but you could not drink.
- 29:08No drinking. No, you could not drink.
- 29:11That's changed a little bit. In 1970. 70.
- 29:16Huh. That is when they legalized the
- 29:18ability to drink in Saint on Saint Patrick's Day in Ireland,
- 29:231970. Yeah.
- 29:25That's not that long. Ago.
- 29:26No, it isn't. It isn't.
- 29:27Well, it's kind of the big difference between how we
- 29:30celebrate here in Minnesota versus how it has been
- 29:35traditionally celebrated in in Ireland.
- 29:40So religious versus party time, I don't know.
- 29:46Yeah, 22 very different ways, but.
- 29:49Well, there's, it's both. I mean, you know, like if you
- 29:51look at our celebration here in Saint Paul, it's not just about
- 29:57drinking. I mean, certainly all the bars
- 29:59have, you know, green beer and come the Irish with us for a day
- 30:02and all that stuff. But there's the traditional
- 30:05Irish dancers and folklore and folk art that's available.
- 30:10There's all kinds of history stuff about Saint Paul and the
- 30:14Irish. There's the parade with all the
- 30:16clans. There's a bunch of stuff.
- 30:19Right. Well, and that's like in
- 30:20Ireland, the what they are now embracing is the art and
- 30:23culture. And it was in around 1970 that
- 30:28they opened it up. And then in like the early
- 30:312000s, they started to really work on the attraction of where
- 30:38you bring people in. What is that travel?
- 30:41Oh, tourist. Yeah, yeah, tourism OK around
- 30:45Saint Patrick's Day and now they're very much into
- 30:47highlighting the great things about Irish culture that get
- 30:51kind of lost in some of the debauchery that happened some
- 30:55places. Yeah, here.
- 30:58So they. Debauch, don't they?
- 30:59They do debauch. And I mean, I, I personally
- 31:04struggle like with the concept of all of the stereotyping that
- 31:07happens around Saint Patrick's Day and.
- 31:12As a redhead. As a redhead who celebrates
- 31:15Saint Patrick's Day, yes, yes, I'm.
- 31:17I'm not out there drinking and just getting drunk and wearing
- 31:21the green. I'm like.
- 31:23I mean, let's be real, the Irish as a people have had it real
- 31:28hard. Yeah.
- 31:31Sure. It's I think it's fair to have a
- 31:34day where you would think about that real, very real struggle
- 31:37and not want to get, you know, carried away into the sort of
- 31:41the, the silliness of the revelry.
- 31:44Well, and around the world where to celebrate it is definitely
- 31:48seen more like this is a celebration and something
- 31:52springtime. Interestingly enough, but I
- 31:56learned, I learned a lot. I learned that, you know, like I
- 31:59said, there are parades all over the world.
- 32:00I didn't realize that there was a parade in Tokyo, but there's a
- 32:03parade in Tokyo, which just kind of.
- 32:05Respect. I mean this shows you or shows
- 32:09me. Thank you, Tokyo for whenever
- 32:10you listen to this episode. Yeah, yeah.
- 32:13Respect. But I mean, it just shows me how
- 32:15like really narrow lens I view things with, right?
- 32:22Like, well, if clearly it happens in the US, but why
- 32:24wouldn't it happen in Argentina like you said, or Australia,
- 32:30which it definitely does? Or Tokyo?
- 32:33Why do I think it's just us, Ireland and maybe a few other
- 32:36places but not that big We. Do have a strong Irish presence
- 32:40here. We do.
- 32:41We do have a strong Irish presence, so, but we're
- 32:44certainly not the only ones. So yeah, I, it was kind of fun
- 32:47going down that road and learning a little bit more about
- 32:52the history of Saint Patrick's Day.
- 32:53I obviously knew. And if you don't know, know
- 32:56there were no snakes in Ireland. But it's fun to pretend that you
- 33:02know that Patrick got old. Saint Patrick drove him out of
- 33:06Ireland because he can't find any today, right?
- 33:08So job well. Done well, you did a great job.
- 33:10Job well done, yeah. It's also the connection with
- 33:13the whole. Yeah, yeah.
- 33:16But. You know what he didn't do?
- 33:17What didn't he do? He didn't drive the Irish out of
- 33:20Ireland. No, because that whole thing
- 33:22about him driving the, I don't know, pagans or whatever they
- 33:27call them, I don't know what the right terminology is.
- 33:30It didn't work. No, no.
- 33:33They're still there, celebrating their ancient cultures.
- 33:36There are people there still celebrating their ancient.
- 33:38That's right. That's right.
- 33:40Certainly, I think you kind of have that everywhere you.
- 33:42Having their ancient languages. I mean, there's still people
- 33:45there speaking Gaelic. Yeah, which is older than, you
- 33:49know, Latin. Well, maybe not older than
- 33:51Latin, I don't know that for sure, but it's older than when
- 33:55Latin was brought to Ireland. We watched a really interesting
- 33:59show that was set and it was a true show set in Ireland and I'm
- 34:04not going to remember the name of it, but it was during.
- 34:06Bodkin. Wait, is that what it's really
- 34:10called or is that the funny that's not funny show with the
- 34:14guy? Oh, maybe that was a different.
- 34:16I don't know. What were you going to say?
- 34:17I'm. Talking about the 1:00 during
- 34:19the IRA. Oh, that was really good it.
- 34:21Was really good. Really good series on Netflix.
- 34:25Man, that was good. I think in honor.
- 34:28Of I wanna say speak no evil, but that's not right.
- 34:30No, but it is something like. Don't speak.
- 34:33Maybe. Don't say a word.
- 34:35Don't something like that. Good luck.
- 34:37With the yeah. Good luck, just Google and I
- 34:41don't say the. Word.
- 34:42Just search. Use the word.
- 34:44Search I know I I encourage anyone to find a good show, but
- 34:49that one was good and had a lot of historical references that I.
- 34:54That was dark, man, and it was real, and it was.
- 34:59Yeah, well, I mean it shows like.
- 35:01People made me made me have a lot of feels about my Irish
- 35:03heritage. Yeah, yeah, I mean, but here's
- 35:07the thing people don't like. Well, there wasn't a mess
- 35:13immigration at that period. But you know, people leave hard
- 35:17and live hard lives. Both those things happen.
- 35:19You know, it is not always and we see it all over the world.
- 35:23There's always places that struggle.
- 35:25And I think sometimes we might internalize it more either while
- 35:28it is the time or for a culture that we have more affinity to.
- 35:33Right? Like for me, it's more real,
- 35:36right? Like the like all of that
- 35:39happening, the IRA is more real to me.
- 35:43Sure than a conflict that would have happened in a country where
- 35:46you didn't have lineage. Right, right, right.
- 35:49Well, and my Irish father obviously also, I remember him
- 35:52talking about it when I was a kid.
- 35:54So like it just as as current events, right, You know, whereas
- 36:00maybe we, I don't, I don't know. It's it makes sense though.
- 36:04I think people always, maybe they don't.
- 36:07I think I always have something in me genetically, blood or
- 36:13whatever, that makes me want to see and seek out home.
- 36:18It's the red hair. It might be, but it's not just
- 36:21there. I mean, I have other lineage and
- 36:22I've been to like Germany and I and I've been, you know, I've
- 36:25seen that it was great. I enjoyed it.
- 36:28I haven't been to the any of the places.
- 36:30Well, you know, I don't know. Maybe we maybe we can go there.
- 36:34I know we've been talking about it for a while, but.
- 36:37Maybe, if we'll, maybe, maybe we will go to Ireland and we'll
- 36:40find a portal to another dimension.
- 36:43So someone who is a follower of ours, I know, yeah, we got
- 36:49followers. Yeah, tell me.
- 36:51On the Tiki T.O.K OK is from Scotland and he said if we ever
- 36:55go there, and I know it's not Ireland but it's nearby and I
- 36:58feel like. I've got I've got a strong
- 37:00showing of Scotland in my MyHeritage so.
- 37:03Yeah, yeah, he said if we go, he's got like purple hair in a
- 37:06whole like deal in Scotland. I don't know like the.
- 37:09Purple haired Scott. I it's something like that.
- 37:11Sounds cool. Anyhow, he said he would show us
- 37:14around, you know so. Is he Glaswegian?
- 37:17I don't know. OK, I'm sorry.
- 37:21I hope he doesn't actually listen.
- 37:22He's just. Is he a Highlander?
- 37:25Oh gosh, can we OK now? Is he done, Dorian?
- 37:28Because I cannot any of. Your answer, Good, we're getting
- 37:31back into it. Any of your.
- 37:33Answer If you were to find a portal in Ireland to another
- 37:37dimension in Ireland, You know what, Amber?
- 37:39Let me ask you a question. Oh, OK.
- 37:44In this corner we have lucky Luke.
- 37:49Yes, we're unlucky. You're gonna do it with the
- 37:55statistics and the. Cuz, well, he's got the ties
- 37:59still. I just need a little love from
- 38:02the people out there. You gotta work on the people
- 38:05loop. That's the problem.
- 38:07That's the problem. HI, Hope is not a strategy.
- 38:11Hope is a terrible strategy I've heard.
- 38:13This. Before you know what also is not
- 38:15a strategy. OK, 0 research.
- 38:18OK. So also just trying to get
- 38:22votes, those are three strategies I think that we've
- 38:24learned don't work. OK, great.
- 38:26So 8 ties. 8 ties. 11 wins for you?
- 38:31Yeah, and 15 losses. Just 4 away from squaring it up.
- 38:37Yeah, I mean, that's that's a hill to climb, but why?
- 38:40You gotta say it like that. I I just do.
- 38:44And in this corner, claiming to weigh in at 135 lbs of Irish
- 38:49pride, we have the fiery haired Amber who is smoking me for the
- 38:56record. So here's the question, darling.
- 38:59Yes. If you were to choose which
- 39:04being of myth to be. Which being of myth?
- 39:08From Ireland would it be the fairy or Gentry as their liked
- 39:16to be called or? They.
- 39:20Keep going, keep going. Or a leprechaun.
- 39:24Which would I like to be? Yes, and I have to want to be 1.
- 39:29You got to pick one. Got to pick one.
- 39:32Yeah, well, so here's the thing. Every Saint Patrick's Day for
- 39:41many years, we've set these little leprechaun traps.
- 39:46Yep, never caught a leprechaun. Never caught one.
- 39:51And every time I'm like, that's cool, I don't want to catch.
- 39:54A leprechaun. I'll just take the.
- 39:58For the best. Yeah, yeah.
- 40:00So. I guess I'd have to go with
- 40:04what, what are the good attributes and all of that.
- 40:07Like, I have to think about the lifestyle, OK?
- 40:10Lifestyle matters, as we've learned in our Cats versus Eagle
- 40:14Eagles episode. Call back.
- 40:16Wow. OK, lifestyle matters to me.
- 40:20OK, what am I doing as this creature?
- 40:23What? What am I?
- 40:24How do I live? How do I feel as this creature?
- 40:28And how am I seen by others, you know?
- 40:32Am I respected? Am I having a good time?
- 40:38Am I living kind of a ornery life with tedious work?
- 40:44Leprechauns. I'll make my own argument.
- 40:47I'm I'm saying leprechauns are like shoemakers to the fairies.
- 40:55And now I don't want to look down on anyone's job.
- 40:58And shoes are super, super important, but I don't think I'd
- 41:04like doing that. I don't think I would want to be
- 41:09the person who's working for the fairies while they're having
- 41:12just their good old fairy life, doing all the heck they want to
- 41:16do, celebrating, flying around, flitting all of that and just
- 41:20being like this fun character instead of a leprechaun that
- 41:24everybody wants to catch. I don't want people trying to
- 41:26catch me and take my gold and make me give them wishes.
- 41:29I don't want any of that. I want the freedom of being a
- 41:32fairy. The I want the being able to,
- 41:39you know, have the magic that I have and enjoy the life I have
- 41:42and have humans just kind of, you know, was that really there?
- 41:45Did that really happen? Questioning all of that.
- 41:48I want to be the mystery, right. And fun.
- 41:53That is a mythical creature through a portal wall, which I
- 42:00can choose to cross or not. I like that idea, you know, And
- 42:05I feel like they're living a good life.
- 42:07Yeah. Yeah, I don't, I don't really
- 42:10have any reason why I would not pick a fairy.
- 42:13They live like forever. They're, you know, I mean, from
- 42:18everything I've seen with fairies, you know, they're not
- 42:20getting all that old. You know, you don't, you don't
- 42:22have like those fairies who are like, oh, man, my knee hurts.
- 42:26You know, I'm not seeing that. So I feel like they must be
- 42:29pretty healthy. And, and you don't hear about
- 42:33people who have problems with fairies, right?
- 42:35You're not like, oh, there's, there's this big old fairy war,
- 42:38all these fairies. Everybody's hating on fairies.
- 42:41People like fairies. They love fairies all over the
- 42:46world and in many kinds, all kinds.
- 42:48I love fairies, whether that be little ones or big ones.
- 42:54I love fairies. So I would choose to be a fairy.
- 43:00That's my argument. All righty then.
- 43:03Well, having done some research, which it seems maybe like you
- 43:08didn't have a chance to do. I did a whole bunch on Ireland.
- 43:13That's good. The good news too is we have a
- 43:16lot of information about Ireland anyway.
- 43:20Well, so the some of the stuff he said is attributed to the Fay
- 43:24of Ireland, some isn't. I just there have to be of only
- 43:29I, I'll. Just leave it at that.
- 43:30You took it, took some creative liberties.
- 43:32I did. I did think, I did say it from
- 43:35Irish lore. I think I said that.
- 43:37Well, I don't know. They don't.
- 43:38They don't have wings and fluid about.
- 43:40They're not bugs. You know what?
- 43:42Yeah. Have you?
- 43:43Seen and they are known to be, they're known to be a little
- 43:46tricky because they glamour humans when they feel the desire
- 43:51to do so. Sure.
- 43:53Anyway, my choice on purpose would be to be of the
- 43:58leprechauns, and there's a bunch of reasons for that all.
- 44:03Right, let's hear it. They're known to be jovial.
- 44:07They like to joke and laugh and play and have fun.
- 44:10They like messing with humans. They are known to be Cobblers.
- 44:15Sometimes, not all the times. They have two jobs.
- 44:19Well, OK, but see the, the claiming the research that I, I
- 44:23mean, we both have the Internet. So anyway, and I could even go
- 44:29with that because I find there to be value in good, honest
- 44:35work. And I mean that.
- 44:37No, I really, really do. And I think that making shoes is
- 44:42not a dishonorable or distasteful profession.
- 44:45Yes, you did. You.
- 44:47Said you would rather have some little leprechaun make your
- 44:50shoes. I said I would prefer.
- 44:51Get out of here. Mm hmm.
- 44:54You just want to be some posh like, yeah, little up in your
- 44:57Crystal Palace. Yeah, being mean to the little
- 45:00cute leprechauns with their red beards and their, their their
- 45:04their green clothes. And anyways, so another thing,
- 45:08another thing is the leprechauns, they, they got the
- 45:13money they do, they're, they're known to be the hoarders of
- 45:18gold. And, and that's why the whole
- 45:23pot of gold at the end of the rainbow thing, 'cause they got a
- 45:26reputation, they like to stack up their chips.
- 45:29So I mean, I'm thinking if I'm a little magic creature fella and
- 45:35I got AI got a little job I can do when I feel like making some
- 45:38shoes, especially if I get to make shoes for beautiful people.
- 45:42I mean, that's not terrible at all.
- 45:44And I get to joke around with my friends and have fun and play
- 45:47tricks and pranks on on humans and other people that are my
- 45:50friends and I'm rich. OK, this does not sound bad to
- 45:55me. And when it comes to like pop
- 45:58culture, leprechauns are all over pop culture still respected
- 46:03to this day. People try to catch them in
- 46:05their little traps and put out their little coins and
- 46:07chocolates. You don't see people putting out
- 46:09little shrines to fairies out there.
- 46:12What? Well, not wait.
- 46:14Whoa. Not on Saint Patrick's Day, OK?
- 46:17Just the rest of the year, just. With not a lot of people and
- 46:24they're cute. You said they were green.
- 46:27They aren't always. I said they wear green clothes
- 46:29sometimes. Sometimes it's red.
- 46:30That's true. Those are good colors of.
- 46:34Course. Mm Hmm.
- 46:36Of course. And and there's been at least 4
- 46:40movies about a leprechaun. Yes, yes.
- 46:44Callback to. Old callbacks, yes.
- 46:46Yeah. There's probably a lot more
- 46:47movies. About that like a leprechaun in
- 46:49space or something. Yes, I believe so.
- 46:53Classic Saint Patrick's Day Halloween horror vibes are
- 46:58coming. So, you know, I think that the
- 47:01leprechauns are cool. And then the the last little bit
- 47:04of lore about a leprechaun is that if you catch 1, they are to
- 47:09grant you 3 wishes, which must mean they have some pretty
- 47:12supreme magical abilities. And while that might not be fun,
- 47:18I will say as a trickster magic creature it might be fun.
- 47:23Like maybe somebody wouldn't ask the question quite right and you
- 47:26could twist that up on them and just have a little fun with the
- 47:29people that caught you. The I'm assuming mostly humans
- 47:32are trying to do this so. Monkey paw.
- 47:34It's not real wishes. It's not real wishes, it's a
- 47:36trap wish. Yeah, or the original Genie.
- 47:40Gin, Gin, gin. Yeah.
- 47:42Are they the original though? Is the mythology older than is
- 47:47the Emerald Isle? Are the gin No Genie Gin is not
- 47:52the same as a leprechaun. These are two different.
- 47:55Things that so I'm just saying the mythology of.
- 48:00I don't know. Leprechaun.
- 48:02Came first. Faye versus gin?
- 48:05I don't know. I bet they're similarly old.
- 48:06All human culture seems to have blossomed at a similar time.
- 48:11We have. Weirdly enough.
- 48:12Yes. And we will talk about wishes at
- 48:14a later date, will we? I think so.
- 48:16That could oh what are your 3 wishes?
- 48:19Nope. That could be fun though.
- 48:21You can't stop. We're not doing it.
- 48:23You know what? That's Futurecast.
- 48:25I know it's. TuneIn I don't know when it'll
- 48:28happen episode. #412. Yes, yes, keep listening.
- 48:38I think that's all my arguments about leprechaun.
- 48:41I like the idea. They're they're fun, they're
- 48:44cute, they're magical. They grant wishes.
- 48:47Who doesn't want wishes granted? I'm just saying.
- 48:49Anyway, I'm going with Leprechaun.
- 48:51OK, I'm just going to put one teeny tiny point of.
- 48:53Order. Plus if I got to make your
- 48:55shoes. Oh, come on.
- 48:57But but really, what you're saying is you'd like to be a
- 49:02fairy because leprechauns are fairies.
- 49:06No, it's different. Aha, fairy.
- 49:08Winds. That's a silly just stop.
- 49:10It no it's. Not disqualified.
- 49:12It's not disqualified, it's up to the listener to the side.
- 49:15It's like saying what kind of bird do you want to be in saying
- 49:17that the eagle's the same as a Canary.
- 49:19Don't would stop. No, that's like, oh, OK, yeah,
- 49:23explain. I want to be a.
- 49:25Explain it to the people you're claiming to not having.
- 49:28No, no, I don't want to be a bird.
- 49:30I want to be the. Eagle The difference between a
- 49:32leprechaun and a fair. They're literally leprechauns
- 49:37are fairies. Eagles are birds.
- 49:39Yep, same point. Oh my God, in heaven.
- 49:44Yep, Cardinals are the same as albatross.
- 49:47No. No, I I guess I just, I'm not
- 49:51smart enough. No, it's the same concept.
- 49:54Are you suggesting our listeners aren't smart?
- 49:55Enough. That's our felines.
- 49:59But not all felines are cats. All leprechauns are fairies, but
- 50:04not all fairies are leprechauns. You.
- 50:08See, I feel like we didn't need to go down that little dirty Rd.
- 50:12I think we did. We did.
- 50:14Wow. So there you go.
- 50:17How do you catch it? How do they vote?
- 50:19How do they catch it? Amber on a fishing pole?
- 50:23Cuz what are we doing? Yeah, yeah, yeah.

- 51:05And what color are frogs? Green.
- 51:08Sounds like. Oh, I could have wore that green
- 51:10Frogtown shirt, but I didn't. I'd have wore my Irish Saint
- 51:13Paul Saints hat. There you go.
- 51:15There you go, full circle for everybody.
- 51:17Full circle, full circle. Now what you need to do is vote
- 51:22yes on the Spotify poll. Tell your friends to vote.

- 51:26help. I mean, yeah.
- 51:28And leprechauns are more fun. I I'm, I'm gonna.
- 51:32Leprechauns get it done. I'm gonna put it out there that
- 51:35I would really like to have some people from Ireland vote because
- 51:40I would like to know what they think.
- 51:41Yeah, you know who we're talking to?
- 51:43Yeah. I might send her a text.
- 51:45You. Should I would love.

- 52:15right. Or the following year.
- 52:17Because you know what? This will still be relevant.
